SAVANNAH HERALD NEWSPAPER

Letter To The Editor

Removal of the “CONFEDERATE MONUMENT” in Forsyth Park

I would like to suggest that the monument be removed!!! It is a reflection of a very horrible time in history for African Americans in this country, state and city. It is also a reminder to Caucasians what their ancestors did to an innocent race of people. Savannah is a city striving to become truly diverse and with these types of reminders that cannot be the case. If in fact the monu-

ments remain, there should be a monument in Forsyth Park or the downtown area to commemorate a time in history where African Americans revolted against the horrible atrocities bestowed upon them by slave owners. An example of a monument would be a memorial to the Minister “Nat Turner,” and the great Abolitionist “John Brown” standing side by side against a horrible time

in American History. A monument of Harriet Tubman would be appropriate and appreciated also. I’m sure a city such as Savannah will come up with a solution that will be fitting for ALL of the citizens in ALL of her communities. Sincerely, Alicia Blakely A Concerned Citizen

Entertainement Health Care Signups Have Started; Enrollment Period Cut in Half

WASHINGTON -- It’s sign-up season for the Affordable Care Act, but the Trump administration isn’t making it easy - cutting the enrollment period in half, slashing advertising and dialing back on counselors who help consumers get through the process. Many people already faced fewer choices and higher premiums. But President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a subsidy to insurers that lowers consumer costs compounded the turmoil, pushing premiums even higher. Add it all up and the number of uninsured peo-

ple may start rising again, eroding gains that drove the uninsured rate to a historic low. “It certainly is a hostile takeover,” said health policy expert Joe Antos of the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute. “We are going to see a decline in enrollment,” he added. “The people who will drop out in droves are the ones who are not getting a premium subsidy.” Open enrollment started Wednesday, Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 15 in most states, a sign-up period six weeks shorter than last year’s. Some 9 million to 10

million people currently have private plans through the ACA’s government-sponsored markets. More than 8 in 10 receive subsidized premiums, and are cushioned from rate increases. Federal help paying premiums is still available despite GOP efforts to repeal the health law. In states served by the HealthCare.gov website, premiums will go up 37 percent for a hypothetical 27-year-old picking a standard plan called “second-lowest cost silver,” the Health and Human Services department reported Monday.

With insurers exiting the market, about half of counties will only have one participating carrier offering plans. Eight states have only one insurer. But subsidies for premiums are also going up - by 45 percent on average. That means current customers receiving financial help have a strong incentive to renew.

How many new people will join remains an open question, even if they’re eligible for help with premiums. New enrollees are vital because healthier, younger people are needed to keep rising premiums from destabilizing the marketplaces. Already this year there was a big drop-off among consumers who buy indi-

vidual coverage outside the government markets, and aren’t eligible for premium subsidies. Their costs, however, are generally tied to rising “Obamacare” rates. Monthly premiums can be as a high as a mortgage payment in some cases. Polls show widespread consumer confusion. Some are unsure if the health law has been repealed.

BUTLER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH USA, 603 W Victory Dr., Sav., GA 31405, 2017 Thanksgiving Annual Community Dinner will be Friday, November 17, 2017, 1pm - 3pm. All meals served in-house. No take-outs. For Donations or Volunteer Opportunity. Please contact Mrs. Eady @ (912)2367747

Jacqueline (Jackie) Marie White November 14, 1965 March 21, 1987

Jackie has been gone thirty years She left a legacy by the way she was, and it’s all in her name.

Jackie was all these things. Accountable

Caring Kind Innovative Eager

We celebrate Jackie’s birthday November 14, but we don’t dwell on her death, we are blessed by the way she lived her life. Missed but not forgotten.

Love by, your parents, Eula & Willie Brown; sisters, brothers, family and friends.

Meet the Mermaids

California’s famed Hotel del Coronado doesn’t make it clear whether men can be mermaids too in the promotion of its Mermaids Fitness classes, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. But, it might be open to letting the menfolk take a peek as the instructor puts the next class of fitness-minded ladies through their paces in its Beach Village pool. The idea is that swimming the way mermaids do, using their fish tails, to propel them through the water is a better way to build core strength. The aerobic exercise classes don’t start until next spring, but the hotel is already taking reservations on its Web site. It costs $25 a session and that includes your mermaid tail rental, although it’ll cost you only $10 per 45-minute workout if you bring your own tails.

Toothless voter

Some 27,000 voters cast their ballots in the recent elections in Portland, ME but only one of them apparently was so distracted by the ballot that he or she left a perfectly good set of dentures behind. The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] says the City Clerk alerted the local media in an effort to locate the toothless voter.

Montana police give traffic violators the bird

They really know how to celebrate Thanksgiving in Montana. Police in Billings have been handing out frozen turkeys instead of tickets to traffic violators, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. A local business owner foot the bill for the birds in celebration of the holiday. But, only drivers with no outstanding warrants for having run afoul [afowl?] of the law in the past are eligible to receive the birds.
