Riceboro’s renowned Gullah Geechee Civil Rights activist and Pan Africanist, Jim Bacote, passed away quietly in his home last Sunday, May 6, 2018. In the Islamic tradition, his body was washed, wrapped, and laid to rest two days later at a simple life celebration of prayer and burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Brunswick, Georgia. “When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” This African proverb captures the life of Jim Bacote who returned to his ancestral home here in Liberty County in 2000 to contribute to the preservation of African history and culture that developed along the Sea Islands. I paid a visit to the Geechee Kunda Cultural Arts Center and Museum compound the day before the funeral and I found Pat Bacote, Jim’s wife and co-creator of the cultural site, surrounded by a community of women. They were holding one another up with stories, laughter, and wisdom. When I approached the open-air pavilion of the Welcome House, I hesitated to interrupt the gathering. But Pat looked back at me and said, “Why are you standing back there? Come on and join us. You’re a woman. Speak up and let us know you’re here.” That is what Geechee Kunda is all about. “Geechee” (also Gullah Geechee) refers to the African-based living culture that has survived for more than 250 years through enslavement, the eras of Reconstruction and Jim Crow, and it continues to thrive from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and North Florida. It includes foodways, language, art, and community. And “Kunda” means house of hope. In other words, Pat was saying “Wa jine we!” Translation: Come and join us! I began the interview in the Community Hall requesting a word or phrase that describes Jim. With no hesitation in her voice, Pat said, “Amazingly innovative!” She explained: “We have lived and traveled to many places including Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, and Burkina Faso in West Africa where we owned and operated a textile factory and we have traveled extensively around the globe. Jim and I, we were born in coastal Georgia in Brunswick. And we made a conscious decision to return here to the land of our ancestors in Liberty County– to achieve a vision of sharing African history and culture and to build bridges with diverse communities from all around the world so that healing and understanding can begin to take place.” “In 2000, when we built Geechee Kunda, nobody else was doing that in the United States, especially as it pertains to the Gullah-Geechee culture. Over time, we understood that right here in Liberty County, little old Riceboro, off I-95, our facility had developed into a tourism destination and it is truly an epicenter, a place for people to gather, see, and learn of the great history of Africans through the lens of the Gullah Geechee people. Globalization of this living culture is here. The myth is that our culture it is dying. No! We are about hope. We are alive!” “Jim believed that all African-descended people in America are Gullah Geechee. And the gatherings See BACOTE - Page 4A

Letter to the Editor: “LET’S GET READY TO TAKE ACTION!” What are we doing wrong? Why aren’t we questioning our leaders? Are our representatives representing us or themselves? Our communities have supported many of our representatives for two terms or two decades and more and improvements have yet to come. Investment is promised and not delivered. What we are paying for and our return are two different things. Providing people the best fact supported information is a great starting point to turning things around. The City of Savannah has committed high crimes. The cost of living rates continue to rise. The City is floating bonds while imposing a fire fee. The fire fee will be collected in one lump sum this year and two times next year in your property tax bill. This fire fee will also be a part of your mortgage escrow which will then become a tax. Any tax of this nature should have been placed on a ballot for the public to vote up or down. This fee, and soon to be tax, should be reviewed by our court system. How can we improve our schools and are we getting our monies worth from our 1/2 billion dollar school system? A graduation rate of 84.3% is good but not excellent. At the same time, 55.3% of black

males are graduating from our Chatham County Public Schools. The data reveals the truth. The Chatham county district score is a ‘D’ (66.9) and 42.1% of our children are reading at or above the 3rd grade level target. Only 55.5% are ready for college. The 3rd grade reading score are a major indicator to prisons on how many beds will be needed in the future. The evidence hits home. Butler Elementary School has a grade of ‘D’ (63.3). From the years 2013 to 2017, Butler had 3 ‘D’s and 2 ‘F’s in regards to performance. Only 13.8% of Butler’s 3rd graders are reading at or above grade level target. Looking at other predominately black K-5 schools, the report states: Haven Elementary School received a ‘D’ (62). From 2013 to 2017, 4 ‘F’s and 1 ‘D’. Only 8.8% of Haven children are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. Carrie E. Gould Elementary School has a ‘D’ (62.5). From 2013 to 2017, 3 ‘D’s and 2 ‘F’s. Only 39% of Gould children are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. Otis J. Brock Elementary School (formerly Bartow Elementary) has a grade of ‘F’ (57.6). From 2013 to 2017, 5 ‘F’s. Only 26.5% of Brock children

Savannah Herald Newspaper are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. Robert W. Gadsden Elementary School has a grade of ‘D’ (61.6). From 2013 to 2017, 4 ‘D’s and 1 ‘F’. Only 19.7% of Gadsden children are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. Rice Creek Elementary School has a ‘D’ (66.4). From 2016 to 2017, 1 ‘F’ and 1 ‘D’. Only 38.8% of Rice Creek children are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. Hodge Elementary School has a grade of ‘F’ (57.2). From 2013 to 2017, 5 ‘F’s. Only 31.6% of Hodge children are reading at or above 3rd grade level target. To fact check the above information, go to http:// schoolgrades.georgia.gov/ butler-elementary. There has been success in Chatham County schools. What must be done to improve these failing schools is to replicate the successful best practices being implemented in the better performing schools. The intent of this letter is to ensure that the citizens are not MISINFORMED or UNINFORMED regarding the issues that face us all. Armed with this information, we should know what the issues are and what to ask our representatives because according to these figures, we are not rising. Respectfully submitted, Curtis V. Cooper, Jr.

Barbara Seidman Wants to Rally Up the Support for Veterans When people thank veterans for their service, they are often showing enormous gratitude for the unwavering commitment made when they enlisted. But what about the scars and battle wounds that one cannot see? After the war is over and the rapid deployments have ceased, what support are these heroes given to transition from a hectic war zone back to their safe haven? Barbara Seidman, who is running for Georgia’s 1st Congressional District, believes that more can be done to support these veterans as they leave their military fatigues behind and enter back into the civilian sector. When she is elected, her first priority is to foster a bill that caters to our men and women in the military. Seidman says this bill will re-evaluate the status of returning Veterans, reconnect them with society and re-establish their roles within their families. Some Vets who are returning from war struggle to obtain the proper health care as well as to navigate their benefits says Seidman. The VA has the potential to lose the accountability of our men and women in the service and those who do not wear their scars on their sleeves; the internal wounds are just as significant, says Seidman. Seidman says she has a daughter who served in the Iraq war is now struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and symptoms of these unique characteristics have brought great disruption into her life and the lives of other Vets like her. PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that has the potential to occur in individuals who have experienced or have witnessed a traumatic event such as war/combat, natural disasters, heinous accidents, terrorist attacks or acts and other personal assaults such as rape or violence on others. “I’ve seen what PTSD does to people! I’m dealing with this and living with this every day,” says Seidman. She expresses that while her daughter is receiving the proper care for PTSD such as medication and shelter, she is aware that other military service men and women are not. “There is no need for our Vets to be homeless,” Seidman says, “and not receiving the benefits they’re entitled to. I will forester a Bill that will: reevaluate these Veterans, give the Veterans houses, whether it be vouchers or an apartment complex to fix up, and allow these Veterans to live in them.” If it weren’t for our Veterans defending our country and risking their lives for the Red, White, and Blue, we wouldn’t have our freedom or have the luxury to do the things we do. Our Veterans deserve to get a pension, financial support, psychological support, and support from their families. We owe it to our Vets to provide them with a smooth transition back into the civilian sector, and this is what Barbara Seidman will deliver to Georgia’s 1st Congressional District. If elected to the 1st District, Seidman will take care of our Veterans by passing legislation, which mandates better homes for Veterans, rallies up the proper awareness and support that our military Vets deserve.

The Metropolitan Planning Commission voted unanimously at the March 13th meeting to hire Melanie Wilson as Executive Director of the Planning Commission. She reported to work on Monday, April 30, 2018 after a thorough search was conducted under the leadership of the Planning Commission Executive Search Committee. According to MPC Board Chairman Joseph Ervin, Wilson brings more than 30 years of experience in city and regional planning to our area. Her background in urban planning and development is critical at a time in our city’s history as we expand the perimeter of our downtown footprint. It is important to have an experienced planner and she is the right person to bridge the gap as Savannah further develops as the anchor and powerhouse for economic growth and development in this region. Wilson has an extensive background in environmental, land use and strategic planning.

and sharing that take place here, and the honoring of all human beings, no matter one’s race, gender, or faith, are what make the programs and community-building at Geechee Kunda work so well. If you can embrace the idea that Africans possess high culture like all great cultures in the world, then you are welcomed at Geechee Kunda. European visitors from various countries including England and Germany among many nations, as well as Native Americans have been inspired to join us at Geechee Kunda.” This kind gesture illustrates just how much progress humanity has made since the 1960s when Jim was a young boy. While improvements have been made we still have some distance to go. Born December 18, 1948 in Brunswick, Georgia in Glynn County to Sally and James Richardson Bacote, Sr., at fifteen years of age he was vividly aware of the racial inequalities at segregated Jekyll Island State Park in Glynn County. don B. Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act which ended de facto and de jure segregation in America’s public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Jim Bacote and four other African American youth were, in many ways, the impetus for the integration of other facilities throughout the state of Georgia. May 8, 2018, Tuesday morning just as the sun was stretching across the morning sky to show her full glory, Pat Bacote, her family, and a large group of Geechee Kunda friends gathered around the simple casket in which Jim lay. Imam Ibrahim called everyone in attendance to Salat al-Janazah, collective prayer. He asked whosoever desired to grab a handful of the sandy soil and to sprinkle it over the burial. And one-by-one a diverse group of people from all walks of life, blessed Jim with the soil that perhaps he had played in as a young boy in Brunswick, Georgia.
