Employment Report

Message from Interim Assistant Dean Laine McDonald

As the Interim Assistant Dean of the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) at the UBC Sauder School of Business, I’m pleased to share the Master of Management (MM) and Bachelor + Master of Management (B+MM) Employment Report with you as you consider the next step in your career journey.

Navigating today’s evolving job market—the shifting economic conditions, emerging industries, and new ways of working—requires more than business expertise. It demands adaptability, emotional intelligence, and strong professional connections. The Class of 2024 rose to the occasion, and this report reflects the ambition and resilience that define UBC Sauder graduates.

The UBC MM is more than a degree—it’s a transformational experience that equips students with non-business undergraduate degrees with the foundational business skills to accelerate their careers. This innovative program offers two pathways:

• Master of Management Degree: A 9-month program for graduates with non-business undergraduate degrees.

• Bachelor + Master of Management Dual Degree: A 4.5-year combined degree for UBC undergraduates in select faculties.

The BCC supports this journey through one-on-one career coaching, an embedded career development course, job opportunities, and exclusive alumni and employer events. Whether pursuing roles in Canada or globally, in established industries or emerging sectors, students benefit from our personalized support designed to help them clarify their goals and build the skills, knowledge, and networks to achieve them.

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the UBC Sauder experience. Consulting projects with local organizations, an industry capstone, case competitions, and study abroad opportunities are more than learning moments—they’re launchpads. For many students, these experiences serve as gateways to full-time roles, demonstrating the real-world value of hands-on learning and the strength of our employer and alumni networks. With more than 50,000 alumni worldwide and strong industry relationships, our students gain access to a robust and engaged network that supports them throughout their MM studies and beyond.

I look forward to welcoming you to UBC Sauder, where our community is shaping the future of business through innovation, sustainability, and responsible leadership.

Average age (range 21 to 29)

Average years’ experience (range 4 months to 2 years)

*Students with more than two years full-time work experience after graduation are not eligible for admission.

Academic background

“ The UBC MM program at UBC Sauder provided me with the education and tools to successfully transition into the Canadian finance market. The Business Career Centre played a pivotal role in securing my position as a Business Banking Associate at TD Bank. Their assistance involved identifying optimal opportunities, guiding me through interview preparations and supporting my transition from student life to the workforce even after graduation.”

UBC B+MM Class of 2024

“ The UBC MM program gave me valuable business skills that helped me execute on my ideas and bring them to life. By combining my knowledge from my undergraduate degree with foundational business skills, I am now more confident to lead successful projects knowing that I have a strong understanding of the business environment.”

“ At EY we look for top performers and innovators, and we are proud of our differences and all they bring to our firm and our clients. This summer we hired two data scientists from the UBC MBAN and MM programs who joined brimming with intellectual curiosity, knowledge of markets, and eager to dive in to any collaborative work or volunteering opportunity available. UBC Sauder prepared them with foundational knowledge, technical skills, and a positivity toward teaming and joining that will continue to serve them well at EY and among our consulting data practice.”

Community Business Project

The Community Business Project (CBP) is a hands-on opportunity to apply your business skills to real-world consulting projects for non-profits and social enterprises within the greater Vancouver community.

Not only will you gain practical experience applying critical business skills, but this for-credit course will allow you to make a positive impact by working on community-enhancing projects such as business planning, market expansion, community planning, and environmental sustainability initiatives. These experiences will enhance your resume and catch the attention of employers.

UBC MM and B+MM Class of 2024 Partnering Organizations

“ UBC Sauder candidates exceeded my expectations in many ways. The candidates helped develop our corporate outreach strategy and outlined the initial steps for VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation to grow our annual leadership donors within the Foundation. They come prepared during our check-in meetings with questions. There’s a high degree of strategic thinking, creativity and innovation in their approaches. This is clearly demonstrated in their qualitative reports and presentation.”

Phyllis Lai (Vancouver General Hospital & UBC Hospital Foundations)

Oliver Scholfield - UBC MM ‘17

Executive Director, Racing to Zero

From the Olympic field to environmental sustainability, Oliver Scholfield’s journey reflects passion and purpose. A distinguished alumnus of UBC Sauder’s Master of Management (MM) program, Scholfield merged his love for sports and sustainability to create a greener future in the world of athletics.

One of the program’s highlights is the Community Business Project (CBP), which provides hands-on experience with nonprofit clients. Through this initiative, MM students work on consulting projects that develop their project management and client relations skills. Scholfield’s team partnered with the United Way of Lower Mainland, where they created a comprehensive business plan and presented recommendations to the organization’s Board of Directors.

“The real-world setting of the CBP was incredibly valuable,” Scholfield notes. “It was one thing to study theories, but applying them to a live project was a different experience altogether.”

In 2019, he co-founded Racing to Zero, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing the environmental impact of sports.

“I noticed climate change affecting every aspect of sports—travel, equipment, waste generation,” says Scholfield.

The organization has grown significantly, advocating for sustainable practices with national and provincial sports organizations. Racing to Zero focuses on raising awareness, measuring carbon emissions, and pushing for policy changes. Looking ahead, the company aims to expand its influence, striving for systemic change and climate action.

Today, Scholfield remains connected to UBC Sauder, returning to the CBP as both an employer and alumnus.

“I wanted to give back to the program that had such a significant impact on my career,” says Scholfield. “It’s rewarding to support current students and work with them on a project that I now call my own. In fact, I’m sure I’ll be learning just as much from them with the fresh new ideas they’ll be bringing to the table. I hope they gain as much from their experience as I did.”

Empowering you for career success

The Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) at the UBC Sauder School of Business is committed to supporting your professional development and preparing you for the ever-evolving world of work. Our personalized career coaching, embedded career programming, and extensive connections to the business community are designed for you to take full advantage of during your degree and will help propel your career long after you graduate. We’re committed to equipping you with the tools and knowledge to achieve your career ambitions.

Experiential learning

We prioritize your transition into the workplace by offering various experiential learning opportunities. Our program offers you valuable real-world experience through a three-month consulting project with a local not-for-profit or social enterprise, working on initiatives like business planning, market expansion, and environmental sustainability. This practical experience—combined with case studies, a two-day business simulation, and mock interviews—helps you stand out to employers. MM graduates have translated their degrees into full-time roles in companies such as Goldman Sachs, L’Oréal, Artizia, and SAP.

Customized career coaching and career development course

We understand that your career journey is unique. That’s why our team of career strategists offer a range of career development programming and personalized career coaching to support your specific needs and goals. Through a dedicated, for-credit career development course, we help prepare MM students to launch careers in diverse industries. Our team will guide you through the career essentials, enable you to explore different career paths, network with employers and alumni, prepare standout applications, interview confidently, and negotiate job offers. Bachelor + Master of Management Dual Degree students also get an early introduction to career guidance and resources during their Bachelor degree with career development lectures embedded in the undergraduate commerce courses.

Connections with alumni and business communities

Employers play an essential role in our students’ career development. Our employer relations team actively bridges the gap between our students and the business world. The BCC hosts company recruitment sessions, as well as hiring and networking events, to connect you with hundreds of potential employers from a myriad of industries, including consulting, technology, media and entertainment, healthcare, not-for-profit, advertising, public relations, and finance. We also post career opportunities to our UBC Sauder-exclusive jobs board. In 2024, we posted hundreds of jobs for MM grads, spanning various roles and sectors. While we provide these career and networking opportunities, it’s up to you to take action. The BCC’s career team is here to support you every step of the way.

Support beyond graduation

Our support for you doesn’t end at graduation. We’re committed to helping you thrive in your chosen field, with continued access to self-guided career resources and the BCC job board. You’ll also gain access to alumni UBC discounts and services, including career development programming.

“ The UBC MM program helped me land my first full-time job after graduation by gifting me with UBC Sauder’s valuable alumni resources and sharpening my knowledge through its amazing courses that are highly relevant to the work that I’m doing now. I was lucky to be part of the MM cohort and I would recommend this program to all who aspire to scale up their competitiveness in the job market.”

Interpreting our employment and internship data

Accreditation

UBC Sauder proudly holds accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a globally recognized body that provides specialized accreditation for business and accounting programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. This accreditation is a testament to the quality and rigor of our programs and is considered the gold standard in business education worldwide.

Reporting standards

The Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) is a member of the Career Services and Employer Alliance (CSEA). The CSEA has guidelines for reporting employment, salary, and other related statistics, which are recognized as the standard for sharing this information with external ranking organizations and the CSEA itself. The data presented in this report has been collected and interpreted in accordance with the CSEA Specialty Masters Employment Reporting Standards (2017).

Salary statistics

When considering salary compensation, it’s important to look beyond the average and consider the median (mid-point) and range. These additional data points offer a more comprehensive view of salary distribution among the class. It’s worth noting that the average can be skewed by a small number of students receiving either very high or very low salary offers. For consistency and ease of comparison, all salaries are reported in Canadian dollars, with foreign salaries converted using the prevailing exchange rate.
