CORONAVIRUS (COVID 19) What is COVID 19? Corona viruses are large groups of viruses that are common amongst animals. Those viruses can make people sick, usually with a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, similar to a common cold. Common coronaviruses that affect humans 229E (alpha coronavirus) NL63 (alpha coronavirus) OC43 (beta coronavirus) HKU1 (beta coronavirus) People around the world commonly get infected with human coronaviruses 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1.
The president addressed the nation to advise on decisive measures being undertaken to save millions of South Africans from infection and save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. A nation-wide lockdown was enacted in terms of the Disaster Management Act on Thursday 26 March at midnight till Midnight 16 April 2020. The lockdown will last for 21 days. South Africans will not be allowed to leave their homes except under strictly controlled circumstances, such as seek medical care, and buy food, medicine and to collect a social grant. Food delivery services, restaurants, cafes, bars and coffee shops are required to close. All shops and businesses will be closed, except for: pharmacies, laboratories, banks, essential financial and payment services including the JSE – supermarkets, petrol stations and health care provides.
Temporary shelters meeting necessary hygiene standards are made available for homeless people.
TRAVEL
All non-essential international and local travel should be avoided and travellers from high risk countries will not be allowed to enter the country.
