hey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which means that different people possess different standards of beauty and that not everyone agrees on who is beautiful and who is not. With that said, you may not agree with what we consider beauty and we welcome that.

“People say sometimes that Beauty is superficial. That may be so. But at least it is not so superficial as Thought is. To me, Beauty is the wonder of wonders. It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible. ~ Oscar Wilde

n a town where what’s hot is already cold, where restaurants are closed prior to opening, where clubs are flipped before they’ve flopped, one Tinseltown hideaway has broken free from the pack to establish a new regime. Sadie is a wondrous and historical melding of a restaurant featuring marketdriven, New American Cuisine, and top-shelf lounge with world-class artisan cocktails, right in the heart of Hollywood. “Sadie’s philosophy is simple -- we want you to feel at home,” says General Manager, Patrick Doherty. “For us, it’s not just about serving our guests and making their evening encompassing, but it’s about creating and nurturing relationships so that everyone who walks through our doors knows we’re there to support them in having an incredible evening that will follow them all the way home. We are creating a genuine experience.” The story behind the restaurant’s name finds its roots in the journey of the Simon family’s beloved

matriarch, Sadie. After settling in the Hollywood area back in the early 1930’s, Sadie found her true calling when apprenticing at a friend’s candy shop. Her love of crafting sweets, and serving a dedicated clientele, was brought to life through the opening of the Simon Candy & Nut Shop on Hollywood Boulevard in 1935. After Pearl Harbor and World War ll officially began, the depression set in and Sadie had to close the shop in 1942. Sadie couldn’t stay away from her special brand of homegrown hospitality for very long, so in the wake of the war’s end, the family celebrated by opening Jeanie’s Candy & Nut shop in 1946. After the war ended, Sadie’s sons returned home from the service, and they purchased the parking lot and property on Las Palmas where Sadie Kitchen and Lounge currently sits today, where they started working 24/7. Sadie, who still loved to cook and bake, opened her home daily to her family, friends and her son’s employees, each of whom enjoyed her kitchen creations on their daily breaks. It wasn’t uncommon for Sadie to feed

upward of 20 people each day. With the desire to give back to the community that has hosted their property for so long, family member and Business Manager, Faris Simon set out to create an upscale lounge and eatery that celebrates Hollywood’s rich history while embracing its continuous evolution. With this vision in mind, he called upon Ralph Gentile Architects to turn his family’s dream into a reality. The result is a venue that plays loving homage to Hollywood’s golden past with its vintage neon sign at the entrance, Victorian chandeliers that illuminate a vintage mahogany bar in the Parlour, exposed brick floors and walls that lead to the Lounge, and the magical courtyard dining room, where guests will literally be dining under the stars. Sadie’s modern side is presented by a team consisting of some of the restaurant industry’s biggest talent. With over 20 years of experience at some of L.A.’s most seminal culinary venues -- the

Hotel Bel-Air and The Buffalo Club where he oversaw every detail of the operation for 14 years, General Manager, Patrick Doherty oversees Sadie with his attentive approach to customer service. Having worked with four Master Sommeliers over the course of his career, in addition to crafting the wine menu at the Hotel Bel-Air and The Buffalo Club, Doherty is extending his vast vino knowledge to build Sadie’s eclectic wine list. Selections will include classics from California to Spain, Bordeaux to Burgundy, and a perfect mix of the old and new worlds. Manning the kitchen is Executive Chef, Dave Schmit who has fed countless hungry souls at restaurants across the southland, including the Hotel Bel-Air, the Brentwood Country Club and The Polo Club at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Schmit dedicated himself to creating a rustic and seasonaldriven menu offering modern, market-driven New American Cuisine. “My style is to make really clean, simple, delicious food,” Schmit explains. “People want real food with quality and attention to detail, and it doesn’t have to be hard to do. This is the honesty and integrity I wish to bring to Sadie. I want to make the menu an oasis of quality.” Taking his place behind the bar is Sadie’s Director of Spirits, Giovanni Martinez, who has previously graced The Buffalo Club and the New York and Los Angeles outposts of Fig & Olive with his approach to mixology. Martinez continues his tradition of creating unique and tasty libations at Sadie, where he

infuses the venue’s artisan handcrafted cocktail menu with a blend of artistic vision and unbridled skill, resulting in a cocktail list that serves as a stand-alone experience, and is also perfectly paired with the kitchen’s delicious dishes. “I think it is incredibly important to think of the drinks as a piece of the entire experience, says Martinez. “It should fall in line with the mood, theme and narrative of the bar, restaurant and cuisine… not to mention the neighborhood, time of year and climate. Though my experience is firmly rooted in the 19th Century Golden Age, I’m not a stickler for rules and standards. After all, I’m born and raised in L.A., and we don’t like being put in a box.” Completing the team is Melissa Goodman, Sadie’s Director of Sales & Marketing, who rose through the ranks of the popular Creative Theme Restaurants Group, which launched the Saddle Ranch Chop House, Miyagi’s and Rome. Goodman then moved on to The Buffalo Club in 2004, where she redeveloped the event department infrastructure before taking on L.A.’s famed Knitting Factory till 2009. Goodman calls upon 14 years of marketing and event experience to help create a venue that pleases even the most discerning client and ensures they’ll come back for more. So forget what you know about Hollywood hot spots, and come introduce yourself to Sadie. Put simply, it’s where the old and the new Hollywood intersect in a timeless space, and you will have an amazing experience! S SadieLA.com February 2012 | 17 | S

There’s a lip gloss and wand in the muzzle, the loading chamber doubles as a pill compartment complete with pills, including Viagra, 100 grams of certified silver bullion in the Chanel gun clip, 50 grams of 24-karat gold, a toothpick and, in some models, a hairpin and a small vial of perfume. The guns also conceal a 4-gigabyte jump drive. If you purchase one of the make-up kits, Noten’s Atelier can customize it and arrange refills. S TedNoten.com

W

hen 39-year-old Puerto-Rican singer, booty-shaker, Ricky Martin, was chosen alongside 28-year-old lipstick loving rapper, Nicki Minaj, to become the new face of Mac Viva Glam 2012, the union caught attention because of its unlikelihood. The new lipstick campaign shows the duo looking perfectly matched - playful pop colors and striking poses to boot. Nicki Minaj flaunts her best assets as she suggestively kneels on a motorbike, while Mr. Martin does his best to keep up, flexing his tattooed biceps and holding a giant lipstick. David La Chapelle, who is known for his ironic, often comical styled photography, pairs them with a giant pink lipstick. The two lipsticks, both shades of pink, are sold entirely for charity, with 100 per cent of the sale price of each product donated to help fight HIV and AIDS. Unsurprisingly, there is no shortage of bright pink in the shot, taken in Miami - the hue is splashed across lips, wrapped around Ms Minaj’s body and colors the glam star’s hair. The lipsticks, dubbed Viva Glam Ricky and Viva Glam Nicki, will go on sale in February, benefitting the campaign that has raised $224 million for HIV/AIDSrelated causes since launching in 1994. e all have them. The conversation starter - the element you add to your getup when you want to be noticed. Brianna Fano jewlery is that piece. She has been high on our radar for young up-and-coming designers. The Parson’s graduate earned her stripes in fashion, but is now debuting her first formal jewelry collection. One of the most interesting features in Fano’s collection is her choice of materials. We caught up with the young designer to get some insight. “For a while I had been looking for a material that allowed for more formal flexibility while still maintaining a strong material presence.” Fano explained. “Through working with a local fabricator I started to experiment with Lucite and was really pleased with the results. In this specific collection I started off using rope and Lucite but it wasn’t until I brought in the vintage feel of chain and hinges where I really felt like the collection solidified. Since then I have continued to look for ways that I can push Lucite to play an integral role in my collections.” S BriannaFano.com
