TAFE SA: Women in IT

Page 1

WOMEN IN IT SOUTH AUSTRALIA

1

THE FIRST PIONEERS There’s no doubt that women continue to be underrepresented in the Information Technology (IT) industry. Currently in Australia, females account for only 25 percent of those with post-secondary IT qualifications. Participation in the IT workforce is also lower than across other occupations, with a participation rate of only 28 percent for IT, compared to 45 percent across all professional industries. 1 There are many myths that impact women and girls’ pursuit of a career in the male-dominated industry, and for many, a career in IT is simply not on the radar. Women have been involved in computing from day one, the very first programmers were mostly women who worked within the ENIAC team. The ENIAC: Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer was a massive computer weighing 27 tons used by the US Army in 1946.

TAFE SA is on a mission to inspire more women to study IT now, so they don’t miss out on the careers of the future.

MESSAGE FROM MIRIAM SILVA CHAIR, PREMIER’S COUNCIL FOR WOMEN More than 70 years after women dominated very early computer programming, they now fill less than one third of IT roles in Australia. But the time is ripe for change. We live in a world where rapidly evolving information technology touches every facet of our lives. More diversity in this field is good for business and our community. Information technology and cyber security are priority growth areas for South Australia. They will bring a new generation of jobs, including roles and careers that do not yet exist. The skills required for these careers are many and varied. Communication skills and broad business knowledge have been identified by employers as valuable, while personal attributes including courage, confidence and tenacity have also been highlighted as important. This means your experience from other sectors, and indeed from your everyday life – coupled with relevant qualifications – will be valued and will help you win a job at any age. The Premier’s Council for Women is committed to supporting more women to take up opportunities in STEM. The IT sector offers numerous advantages, including a great deal of career flexibility, highly portable skills, and varied opportunities across many different industries and settings. Increasing opportunities for women in this field is essential to our economy and to achieve gender equality. If you would like to be part of this growth industry, now is the time to get job ready and explore the pathways ahead.

I’ve come from a medical imaging background, where I spent all day investigating people’s fractures and disease processes. There are overlaps with cyber security – we’re still investigating and monitoring, just not on patients. Part of my job in health was to set up protective environments, and I’m excited to be implementing similar concepts and helping people through cyber security.
