ARTS & DESIGN PROGRAM GUIDE A career as an artist or designer calls for creative vision, an interest in exploring new ideas, a strong aesthetic, a keen eye for detail and sense of form and colour. These can be applied in a variety of settings - working independently as a freelancer or as part of a team - and usually for clients. Good interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication, networking and teamwork. While work can offer a lot of variety and excitement, the industry is highly competitive, so the ability to be flexible is an advantage.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY TAFE SA acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which our campuses are located. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. TAFE SA is committed to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land and waters. Artwork: Peter Watts, Kurta Tirkandi – Learning Place

OUR RECONCILIATION JOURNEY In Australia, education has a rich and vast history – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have been learning and sharing knowledge on this continent for at least 65,000 years. As an educational institution, TAFE SA is inspired by this tradition.  We’re also aware of the pain that colonisation and dispossession have caused, and the impact that this continues to have on communities. Reconciliation is, therefore, an important and ongoing process centred on strengthening the relationship between First Nations and non-indigenous Australians. At TAFE SA, we are on a continuous journey to cultivate trust, respect, understanding, and inclusiveness within the organisation. We seek to implement necessary programs and measures to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff feel culturally safe and empowered. In May 2020, coinciding with National Reconciliation Week, we were proud to launch our first conditionally-approved Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This plan is a framework for cultural change that affirms our commitment to reconciliation by building greater awareness and providing increased opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students.

If you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, you’ll have access to TAFE SA’s Aboriginal Access Centre throughout your study. The Aboriginal Access Centre delivers a variety of programs in metropolitan, regional, and remote areas, and helps with enrolments into TAFE SA courses. The Centre also offers mentoring by Training Support Officers, who will act as a link between you and your lecturers, and assist you in developing your individualised learning plan. Since the early 1980s, TAFE SA has had a presence in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, providing key support and training services for local communities. Currently, we have six learning sites in the APY Lands that offer work readiness and work skills. We’re immensely proud to work with local stakeholders and community members to deliver tailored training solutions.  Whether you’re interested in vocational education and training, a university pathway, or a short course, you will be supported and guided throughout your studies at TAFE SA. We are committed to helping each student achieve their educational and career goals.

Information on intake, entry requirements, recognition of prior learning, costs and assistance options is available online for each course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

STUDY COSTS

The majority of TAFE SA courses do not have entry requirements.

The cost of a course depends on the number of hours of training, the type of study involved and specialist materials required.

For courses that have entry requirements, you may need to meet certain selection criteria or course admission requirements to be accepted into a course. This may include: > completing the Australian Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test which ensures satisfactory reading, writing and numeracy skills > portfolio submission > written assessments > auditions. Check each course for details. Where there are more applicants than places available, the majority of courses will rank applicants by date of application. Courses with an audition or portfolio will be ranked on their scores. The number of places available varies across TAFE SA locations.

INTAKES Courses may have two intakes a year – semester 1 for a February start and semester 2 for a July start – or some courses have continuous intakes where offers are made throughout the year, allowing you to start in any term.

Courses that can potentially meet the state’s workforce needs are supported through subsidised training by the South Australian Government to reduce study costs (eligibility and subsidy criteria apply).

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Your previous study or work experience can be recognised when you begin further study at TAFE SA, which may shorten the time it takes to complete your qualification. You can apply to have your previous study assessed to see where it is equivalent in content and learning outcomes to your planned study.

You may be eligible for a government subsidised training place. For more information visit skills.sa.gov.au or call 1800 673 097.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE You may be eligible for a fee concession, fees by instalments, grants or scholarships. VET Student Loans are available for selected qualifications, providing eligibility criteria is met. Talk to TAFE SA on 1800 882 661 (freecall) about your options.
