Welcome from Dr. Waldron Each year at our Upper School awards ceremony in the Spring, I have the opportunity to give an award to students nominated by the faculty for the Headmaster’s Book Award. For the past several years, I have chosen to share a copy of one of my favorite books, The Book of Joy, by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, with Douglas Abrams. The book chronicles a conversation between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, two leaders who have led populations through tremendously challenging circumstances, sharing their reflections on cultivating lasting happiness in a changing world.

incredible school community, why we are all Proud to be a Lion. As we welcomed faculty back to school and asked them to share why they are proud to be Lions, the overwhelming majority shared they are proud to Lions because of our incredible students. Our Student Council President shared with the Upper School why he was proud to be a Lion at an opening assembly, and focused on the opportunity each student has to create a legacy that has a lasting positive impact on our school. While speaking about his pride, I noted that he shared his gratitude for the legacy of some specific alumni of the school who began initiatives and programs from which he has benefited, and his challenge for each student to do the same this year. At some level, pride can only come from appreciating that for which we are grateful.

One thread runs through the extended dialogue as these leaders reflect on the nature and power of joy, what makes joy possible... gratitude. “Gratitude is the recognition of all that holds us in the web of life and all that has made it possible to have the life we have and the moment that we are experiencing.

Thanksgiving is a natural response to life and may be the only way to savor it… It moves us away from the narrow-minded focus on fault and lack and to the wider perspective of benefit and abundance.”

I am proud to be a Lion, and I am also deeply grateful to be a Lion. It is a privilege to work in and lead a school community that authentically focuses on developing independent and creative thinkers, a school that creates a supportive environment that encourages students to explore their passions and interests. I am grateful for the unique gifts, talents, and perspective that our students bring and contribute. I am grateful for our faculty and staff, and their tireless work, who go so far beyond to help our students achieve success.

A Lasting Legacy

What happens when you assemble four talented teachers in front of a captive audience? You get a great deal of valuable advice, some hearty laughs, and lots of first-hand knowledge.

Such was the case at an assembly this fall. Nancy Beckmann, Jo Lamas, Dianne Lee, and Barbara Weeks were honored for their 110+ years of service to St. Andrew’s School. During the assembly, current students were given the opportunity to ask each educator some interesting questions and all of their answers were student centered.

Over $45,000 was raised in honor of these four amazing educators.

Jo Lamas was quick to say, “the students are the most special part of St. Andrew’s.”

At last year’s auction, funds were raised in honor of these four ladies in order to purchase all new play equipment for the school’s three playgrounds. The student assembly was the perfect time to unveil the newly created signs to be placed at each playground recognizing each educator’s years of service.

The ribbon was officially cut for the refurbished playgrounds to be used by current and future students.

European Excursion

The goal: Paris to Amsterdam in 11 days. This past summer 23 members from the St. Andrew’s community embarked on a European trip with a French focus.

French teacher Helene Miller, originally from Arles, France, planned the itinerary using her first hand knowledge of the region. Art teachers Michael Barefield and Miki Duval also assisted with travel plans and served as chaperones.

Highlights included the D-Day Landing beaches in Normandy, the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and the amazing art museums of Paris. Their days were packed and thanks to a handy app, the group tracked approximately 15 miles per day on foot.

“It was a memorable trip for these young people who were able to try new foods, experience a different culture, and improve their French speaking skills,” said Miller. “They

learn about a war that happened across the entire ocean from

a textbook, but to actually be where it all happened and see all the places where people lost their lives and where cities were

destroyed is what will open your mind to how real all of those events actually were and still are today.

Distinguished Alumni Award

From the Class of 1980, Boo McCue Ramage was this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. Boo works in Greenwood, SC and lives in Clinton. Boo is the top Administrator at the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC) where she serves as GGC’s chief operating officer, chief financial officer, legal consultant, and adviser, managing a budget of over 22 million dollars and 175 employees.

She is a lay leader at her church, serves on the Girl Scout Board, has served on the YMCA Board, is an active member of Kiwanis, and helped establish the Greenwood Woman’s Leadership Conference. Words used to describe Boo include, “authentic,” “sincere,” and “community-minded.”

daughter was expecting to deliver a baby right around the same time,” said Boo. Griffin Adair was born the day before the homecoming game, allowing Boo the opportunity to attend the celebration.

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni who through their service, leadership and achievements have distinguished themselves to St. Andrew’s School, their community or their profession. Nominations, accepted at any time during the year, should be a letter of support signed by one or more individuals, outlining the major reasons why the nominee should receive the award.

Nominees remain nominated for two (2) years after the receipt of their nomination.

PINK & TEAL Flag Football Fundraiser Homecoming week kicked things off with a cause and a call for action.

The annual Pink & Teal game paired the freshmen and senior female students against the sophomore and junior females in a gridiron competition.

New this year was the addition of 8th grade female students to the game. Again this year, the proceeds were split between Team Terri for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Mercer University Cancer Research Center in honor of Norma Perry.

Team Teal took bragging rights this year with the win. The final score was 30 - 25. And more importantly, the event raised over $2,500 for two very worthy causes.

Science Fun Day This fall, the school’s youngest students made a trip to the Upper School for a day of hands-on science experiments. Parents and alumni who work in the science industry lead the students through extended projects, labs and lessons around STEM areas. Their faces tell it all.

Augmented Reality Augmented reality is the result of using technology to superimpose information - sounds, images and text - on the world we see. These students are using tablets to learn the process of combining the real world with computer graphics by using this cutting edge application. Pictured here, students use technology to transform a cube, held by MacLean Babcock, into a beating heart on the screen.

Music Matters Five St. Andrew’s musicians were selected as finalists in the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) AllState Orchestra. These students will play a final audition in Atlanta in January 2019.

ADAM CICCIO (Class of 2002) published a therapeutic children’s story called “Anxious Andy” that is making its way up the Amazon Best Seller list. The book follows a young boy who is struggling to cope with his social and generalized worries at school. Adam owns and operates a mental health private practice for children and adults in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

DAVY CLAY (Class of 2004) and his family hosted one of the Venezuelan exchange students this fall.

CHRIS and JESSICA COCKE MILLER (Class of 2006) are the proud parents of Mason Craig Miller born on July 11, 2018, weighing 6 pounds and 14 ounces.

COURTNEY JOHNSON (Class of 2008) married Andrew Newcity, May 12 on Tybee Island and were surrounded by friends and family. Sasha Harper (Class of 2009) was a bridesmaid.

Courtney and Andrew both graduated from Georgia Southwestern State and now reside in Atlanta. Courtney is a geologist with a geotechnical engineering company.
