ELECTED GHOSTS MUVINDU BINOY
In the series ‘Elected Ghosts’, artist Muvindu Binoy reflects on the country’s political limbo alongside his own fatigue with the fallback of power and hierarchy following the unprecedented island-wide protests in June 2022 staged against the then-ruling government of Sri Lanka. Created using artificial intelligence-image generative appli cations incorporating carefully engineered prompts, Binoy intended for these images to represent a cross section of the aesthetic of Ceylon colonial photos and Western gothic themes. Born in 1989 during a dark period for Sri Lanka that both politically and culturally was representative as an infinite repetition of toxicity to the artist.The works reflect Binoy’s cynicism with Sri Lanka and its future, a dystopian view still haunted by the ghosts of its pasts. A repetition of forced cultural values and fabled political views. This series immediately follows the works ‘Protest in Colour’, a documentation of the country-wide protests created with the same technique.
Muvindu Binoy is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is focused predominantly on digital collage and film. As a digital artist, Binoy observes his personal outlook, exploring themes of gender, agency, title and the expectation of traditional values contradicted by modern-emancipated standards of the digital age.
