Course sections in English, Mathematics, and World Languages are available to meet the needs of various student abilities. Assignment to special course sections will be made by counselors and departmentpersonnelwithfinalapprovalgivenbytheAssistantHeadofSchoolforHighSchool.
BecauseoftheamountofworkrequiredinAdvancedPlacement(AP)andHonorscourses,studentsare stronglyencouragedtotakenomorethan3courseseachyear.
POLICY&PROCEDURESFORDUALENROLLMENTANDDUALCREDIT
Purpose-EveryNewMexicohighschoolstudenthastheopportunitytoenrollincollegecoursesthrough theDualCredit(DC)/DualEnrollment(DE)Program.TheDC/DEProgramprovidesaccesstoAcademic andCareer,aswellasTechnicaleducation(CTE),coursesthatdeliversimultaneouscredittowardhigh schoolgraduationandpostsecondarydegreesorcertificates. HighSchoolspartnerwithpostsecondary institutionstooffertheseprograms. SPXiscurrentlypartneredwithCNM,UNM,DineCollege,& NavajoTech. Tuitionandregistrationfeesforpostsecondaryinstitutionsarewaived.Textbooks,distance learningfees,course/labfees,andtransportationcostsaretheresponsibilityofthestudent.
EachinstitutionmayrequiretestscoresfromACT,SAT,orAccuplacerforcertaincourses.TheNMPED DualCreditCouncilhasdelineateda3:1ratioforcredittranscription.Foreach3-4creditcollegecourse,a studentwillearn1highschoolcredit. FinalgradereportsaresenttothehighschoolforcurrentDC/DE enrolledstudentsatthecloseoftheinstitution'sterm. SPXwillenterthecourse(s)andgradesontothe student’shighschooltranscriptattheendofthesemesterthatthecourse(s)weretaken. Thegrades receivedfromtheinstitutionwillbeenteredontothestudent’sSPXtranscript,andwillbeincludedin thestudent’scumulativeGPA.
DualCredit(DC):ThesecoursesaretakenatSPXandtaughtbytheSPXfaculty,whohavebeencertified byandfollowthecollege/universitycurriculumforthecoursetheyteachforDC.Presently,studentstaking DCcoursestaughtatSPXaregivengradesandcreditatCNMaswellasontheirSPXtranscript. DC coursesdocounttowardsSPXgraduationrequirements. Onceadmittedtotheinstitution,astudentcan continuetotakeothercoursesasaDualEnrollmentStudent.
ProcedureforenrollingforaDCcourse: TheSPXteachermaybeabletoassistthestudentwith registeringfortheirDCcourse,butthestudentdoesneedtoapplytotheinstitution.
1. CompletetheonlineadmissionsapplicationandgetyourCNMID.
2. SubmittherequiredAgreementForm.
3. Set-upyourCNMaccount.Thisisusuallythestudent’sportalforallbusinessincludingregistration, requestingtranscripts,accessingtheinstitution’semail,etc.
4. CompletetheDCnewstudentorientationifrequiredbytheinstitution.
5. SubmitofficialACT/SATscoresortaketherequiredinstitution’sassessment,ifrequired.
6. MeetwithaDCAcademicCoach/Advisortodiscusscourseoptions,ifrequired.
7. Registeronlineforclassesforwhichprerequisiteshavebeenmet.
DualEnrollment(DE): StudentsmaybeeligibleforDualEnrollmentbeginningasaSophomore. EligibilityrequirementstoenrollinDualEnrollmentcoursesareestablishedbythepostsecondaryinstitution andmayvarywitheachinstitutionandthedesiredcoursethestudentwouldliketoenrollin. Somecourses maybeonlineandsomemayhavestudentsattendinpersonattheircampus.DEcoursesmayonlybetaken forelectivecreditandlistedassuchontheirSPXHighSchooltranscript.Studentsmaynottakeadual enrollmentcoursetomeetacoregraduationrequirementortakeacoursethatisalreadyofferedatthe highschool. NoremedialcoursesmaybetakenforDEandfitnesscoursesareexcludedfromtheDual EnrollmentProgram.Studentsdogenerateacollegetranscriptattheendofthetermatthepartneredcollege andfinalgradesarereflectedontheircollegeandhighschooltranscript.StudentsmustseetheirSPX counselortoobtaininformationandapprovalpriortoenrollinginanyDualEnrollmentcourse.
ProceduresforenrollingasaDualEnrollmentstudent-Studentswhowishtoenrollatoneofour participatingcollegesarerequiredtodothefollowing:
1. AstudentmustmeetwiththeircounselortodiscusstheirplanstotakeDualEnrollmentcourses.
2. Thestudentwillreceiveinformationonapplyingtothepostsecondaryinstitutionoftheirchoiceand registeringforaclassasaDualEnrollmentstudent.
3. Studentswillcompleteallnecessarydocumentsandsubmitthem,asrequiredbythepostsecondary institution,inatimelymannertotheinstitution.
4. Studentswillcompleteanyorientationortutorialsrequiredaspartoftheadmissionsprocess.
5. StudentswillscheduleandmeetwithanAcademicCoach/Advisorattheinstitutiontoselectcourses. Reminder,SPXhasarotatingschedule;therefore,manypostsecondaryin-personor synchronousonlineclasseswillconflictwithSPXcoursesduringtheschoolday.Theseclasses shouldbescheduledoutsideoftheSPXschoolday(before/afterschoolorweekends).
6. Somecoursesmayrequireaplacementexam.IfanACTorSATscoreisavailable,thestudentmay submitthosescoresalongwiththeirapplication.Ifnoscoresareavailable,thestudentmustwork withtheinstitutiontobeevaluatedpertheirrequirements.Thestudentmustscheduleanappointment withtheinstitutiontotaketheirassessmentsforanycourserequiringacertainscore.
7 Oncethestudenthasselectedacourse,theSPXDualEnrollmentCourseRequestForm(attachedat theend)mustbesignedbythestudent,parent(s),andsupportedbythecounselorpriortosubmitting ittoadministrationforapproval.Remember,SPXmustapproveyourcourseregistration.SPX willreceiveinformationaboutthecourse(s)youhaveregisteredfor.Ifthecourse(s)arenotapproved, SPXwillhavethecourse(s)droppedfromyourcollegeschedule.Pleaseworkcloselywithyour SPXcounselor.
COMMUNITYSERVICEREQUIREMENT
Grade9: Freshmanarerequiredtocomplete10hoursofservicebytheendofeachsemester
Grade10:Sophomoresarerequiredtocomplete12.5hourseachsemester.
Grade11:Juniorsmustcomplete15hoursofserviceeachsemester.
Grades9-11: Unfulfilledorincompleteprojectswillresultinan“I”-“Incomplete.”All“I”grades thatresultfromafailuretocompletethecommunityserviceprogrammustbemadeupassoonas possible
Grade12:Seniorsmustcomplete20hoursofserviceeachsemesterandmustfocustheirserviceon corporal/spiritualworksofmercy.Seniorswhofailtosatisfytheircommunityservicerequirementwill receivean“I”-“Incomplete”ontheirtranscriptandwillnotwalkinthegraduationceremony.No unofficialorofficialtranscriptsorthediplomawillbereleaseduntilthecommunityservice requirementis met.

Currently,thefeeforAdvancedPlacementtestsis$99.00foreachAPexamtaken. However,AP SeminarandAPResearchExamsare$147. Examorderingdeadlinesareinthefallandstudents enrolledinAPclassesatSt.PiusXarerequiredtotaketheexam. Studentpaymentforexamswill beaddedtotheirfamily’sFACTSaccounttostreamlinethepaymentprocess.
Creditisawardedonasemesterbasis.Onehalfunitofcreditisrecordedforasemesterpassinggrade. Eachsemesterofafullyearcourseiscreditedindividually Creditsearnedatotheraccreditedschools duringthesummerpriortoenteringthefallsemesterofGrade9arerecordedonthepermanentrecordbut arenotcalculatedintheGradePointAverage(GPA).St.PiusSummerSchoolcreditcoursesarecalculated
intheGPA.
Asemesterfailinggraderemainsonthetranscripteventhoughthestudentmakesupthecreditin summerschool.BothgradesarecalculatedintheGradePointAverage.IfastudentpassesacourseatSt. Piusandwishestoretakethecourseinsummerschool,bothgradesremainonthetranscriptandare averaged togetherwhencalculatedinthestudent’sGPA.
CREDITSEARNEDATOTHERSCHOOLSAFTERENROLLINGATST.PIUS
StudentswhowishtotakeacourseatanaccreditedschoolotherthanSt.PiusXHighSchoolmustwritea formalrequestpriortoenrollinginthecourseiftheyareseekingtoreceivecreditforthecourseontheir transcript.IfthecourseisnormallyofferedatSt.PiusXHighSchool,theremustbeextenuating circumstanceswhichsupporttherequest.Allrequestsmustincludeastrongrationalefortakingthecourse outsideofSt.PiusXHighSchool.TheserequestsshouldbesubmittedtotheAssistantHeadofSchoolfor HighSchoolandwillbeevaluatedbytheAdministration.
CreditsreceivedforattendinguniversityorcollegecourseswhileenrolledatSt.PiusXHighSchoolwill berecordedonthepermanentrecordandincludedinthecreditstowardgraduationandcomputationofthe GPA,ifsorequestedbythestudentandapprovedbytheSt.PiusXHighSchooladministration. CorrespondencecoursecreditfromanaccreditedinstitutionwillbeacceptedbySt.PiusXHighSchool uponpriorapprovaloftheSt.Piusadministration.
COURSECANCELLATIONPOLICY
Theschoolretainstherighttocancelacourseofferingafterregistrationif:
A. Thecourseenrollmentistoosmalltojustifyitfinancially.
B. Astaffmemberisnotavailabletoteachthecourse.
C. Physicalfacilitiesarenotavailablefortheclass.
POLICYFORCHANGINGCOURSESAFTERREGISTRATION
Studentadvisementfor registrationatSt.PiusXHighSchoolisatwo-monthprocess.Beforestudents selectandregisterfortheir coursesforthefollowingschoolyear,theyarerequiredtogetinputfromtheir currentteachers,counselors, andparents.Thepurposeofthisprocessistoensurethatthestudentsmeet theiracademicgoalsandfulfillallgraduationrequirements.Theselectionsthatthestudentsmake determinebothclasssizeandteacherassignmentsforthefollowingschoolyear.Toensurethatclasssizes remainstablefortheschoolyear,the schooladministrationhasdevelopedthefollowingprocedurefor coursechanges.
Studentsmayrequestachangeintheircourseselectionsiftherequestissubmittedbythelastdayof schooldeadline(lastfinalexamday)oftheyearprecedingtheschoolyearforwhichthechangeisbeing sought.Torequestthis,changestudentsmust:
1.PickupaRequesttoChangeaCourseFormfromtheircounselor
2.Obtainallneededsignatures(counselor,parent,andstudent)
3.SubmittheRequesttoChangeaCourseFormtotheAssistantHeadofSchoolforHighSchool bythelast dayofschooldeadline
4.Changeswillbeconsideredbasedonavailability—not all course change requests will be
granted.
Afterthelastdayofschooldeadline,theonlycourseselectionchangesthatwillbegrantedwillbe changesduetothefollowingreasons:
1.Coursecancellation
2.Scheduleconflict
3.Studenthasanincompleteschedule
4.Coursesarenotincorrectsequence
5.Studentlacksacourserequiredforgraduation
6.Studentdoesnotmeettheprerequisitefortheclass
7.Studentismisplacedintheclassduetoinappropriateskilllevel.
Coursechangeswillnotbegrantedforanyofthefollowingreasons:
1.Concernthatthegradewillbringdownthestudent’sGPA.
2.Preferenceforadifferentteacher
3.Preferenceforadifferentmeetingtime
4.Changeofmindabouttakingthecourse.
AdministrativeCourseChanges-Aftertheschoolyearbegins,discretionaryschedulechangesmaybe madewhentheadministrationdeemsitnecessarytomakethesechanges.
REPORTCARDS
Thefirstquarterreportcardwillbeemailedtoparentsorguardiansafterthecompletionofa quarter/semester Allreportcards(andseniordiplomas)willbe emailedormailedwhenallfinancialand otherobligationshavebeensettledwiththeschool.
TRANSCRIPTS
Onetranscriptofgradesisprovidedfreetoallstudentswhorequestitiftheirbillsandfeesarepaid.Afee ofonedollar,tobepaidinadvance,ischargedforeachadditionaltranscriptrequested.
ACADEMICELIGIBILITY
Tobeeligibleforparticipation/performanceinsports(bothinseasonandpre/postseason)andextra curricularandco-curricularactivities(including,butnotlimitedto,visual/performingartsproductions, ACADEC,etc.)sponsoredbySt.PiusX,astudentmustabidebyscholasticrequirementsasdefinedby St.PiusX.
AnystudentwhohasanestablishedAccommodationPlanatSt.PiusXwillbeindividually evaluatedforeligibility. However,ifastudent,onanAccommodationPlan,failsoneormoreclasses forthequarterorthesemester,thestudentwillbeineligibletoparticipatebasedontheguidelines forAcademicEligibility.

Anystudentwhohascompletedall2ndsemestercoursework,andwhohasearneda2ndsemesterGPAof 2.0orbetterbuthasfailedonlyoneclassforthe2ndsemestermaybecomeeligibleonAugust1st,ifthat studenthassuccessfullycompletedacreditrecoveryclassatSt.Piusforthe2ndsemesterfailure.Ifacredit recoveryclassisnotavailableatSt.Pius,thestudentmustgettheapprovaloftheAssistantHeadofSchool forHighSchooltocompletethecreditrecoverycoursethroughanapprovedprogram.Whenthecredit recovery gradeisreceivedandenteredintothestudent’sacademicrecord,the2ndsemesterGPAmust remainabove a2.0forthestudenttobeeligibletoparticipateonAugust1st.
GradesearnedinsummerschoolmaynotbeusedtoboostGPAtobecomeeligibleforthefall semester.

FirstandSecondHonorsareawardedattheendofeachschoolyeartostudentswhoexcelintheir academicwork.Studentsfinishingthesemesterwithatleasta3.3GPAmeritSecondHonors;thosewith atleasta3.7GPAmeritFirstHonors.
NATIONALHONORSOCIETY
TobechosenasamemberoftheNationalHonorSociety,astudentmusthaveleadershipability,perform servicetotheschoolandcommunity,andmaintaina3.5CumulativeGPAthroughthesecondsemesterof Grade10.Ifamemberfallsbelow3.5inanysubsequentsemester,thatmemberwillbeplacedonone semesterprobation.

INTERDISCIPLINARYCOURSE
ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS (Year) (1 unit of credit with letter grade) - The primary focus of this course involves studying ten different disciplines in preparation for the Academic Decathlon competition, though skills learned can also be applied to college and non-academic life. Subject areas include the following: Mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and elements of calculus, depending on the topics for the year); Geography and History; Visual Art (primary topic may focus on one era of art or may beasurveyofarthistory throughouttheages);Music(elementsofmusicappreciationandafocustopic concerning a particular era or genre of music); Economics (fundamentals of macro-and micro-economics); Science (specific topics differ each year–biology,chemistry,physics,earthscience,environmentalscience, or astronomy); Essay Writing; Language and Literature (grammar and analysis of poetry and a novel); and PersonalInterview(interviewskills).
The St.PiusXAcademicDecathlonTeamwillbeformedfromthemembersofthisclassandwillcompeteat the State and possibly National Academic Decathlon events. Due to the deadlines for team rosters for official competitions, one cannot drop this courseintheFallSemesteraftertheFirstQuarter.Participationin
the LocalorRegionalCompetitionsoftheAcademicDecathlon,whicheveroccursfirst,isrequired.
Members of the class may also steer the course into other competitions of their interest, such as the Knowledge Masters Open, The National Science Bowl, and others -- some of which have substantial awards.

PRE-CALCULUS - This course focuses on the topics that are necessary for the futurestudyof calculus or higher college mathematics. It concentrates on an in-depth study of quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Systems of equations, probability, sequences, and statistics are included in the course and introductory calculus concepts are integrated when appropriate. The course work encourages students to develop a firm grasp of the underlying mathematical concepts used in real-life situations through problem solving and technology A basic scientific calculatorwithout graphingorprogrammingcapabilitiesisrequired.

STATISTICS-Thiscoursefirstintroducestoolsforcollectingdataandconductingstudies.Thenwe analyzeanddescribedistributionsofone-variabledatasets,followedbyasurveyofprobability distributions(normal,binomial,geometric,Poisson,andexponential).Samplingdistributionsandthe CentralLimitTheoremfollow,fromwhichwedevelopintroductoryinferencetechniques(hypothesis

LATINI- This course will introduce students to the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of the “immortal” language. Students will learn through a means of live storytelling and continuous practice. While Latin is not spoken in the vernacular, the language serves as “means for teaching highly intelligent thought and speech.” By the end of Latin I, students will come to have an appreciation for the mechanics of language that will strengthen their writing abilities and communication skills in English In union with learning the Latin language, students will be introduced to the civilization of Ancient Rome, its daily customs and mythology As each cultural topic is studied, students will be surprised by how many aspects of contemporary civilizations have been and still are influenced by the classics. “There can be no doubt as to the formative and educational value of the language of the Romans” - Saint Pope John XXIII.

2ndSemester-APComparativeGovernmentsexpandsontheModelUNSimulationtoexaminepolitical structures,policies,political,economicandsocialchallengesof6selectedcountries: China,Iran,Mexico, Nigeria,RussiaandtheUnitedKingdom. Studentswillengageindisciplinarypracticesthatrequirethemto readandinterpretdata,makecomparisonsandapplicationsanddevelopevidence-basedarguments. APPSYCHOLOGY[Elective]-TheAPPsychologycourseintroducesstudentstothesystematicand scientific studyofhumanbehaviorandmentalprocesses.Whileconsideringthepsychologistsandstudies that haveshapedthefield,studentsexploreandapplypsychologicaltheories,keyconceptsandphenomena associatedwithsuchtopicsasthebiologicalbasesofbehavior,sensation,andperception,learningand cognition,motivation,developmentalpsychology,testingandindividualdifferences,treatmentsof psychologicaldisorders,andsocialpsychology.Throughoutthecourse,studentsemploypsychological researchmethods,includingethicalconsiderations,astheyusethescientificmethod,evaluateclaims, and evidence,andeffectivelycommunicateideas.APPsychologywouldprovideanopportunityto studentswho wishtocompletestudiesinsecondaryschoolequivalenttoanintroductorycollege course.Collegecredit maybeawardedbasedontheresultsoftheAPexam.

THEOLOGYI:(TwoSemesters)-Thiscourseleadsthestudentstowarda deeperunderstandingofthe Bible and the history of our salvation presented within it. The students learn to navigate the Bible and use basic exegetical skills. They examine the relationship among Revelation, Inspiration, and vocation. They learn why salvation history is necessary They then come to knowthepeopleofsalvationhistory:
the early leaders of Israel, the judges and kings, and the prophets. They come to understand that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of salvation history and of the Israelites’ covenant relationship with God. This course is also designed to give students an appreciation and understanding of the celebration of the PaschalMysteryofJesusChristthroughthestudyoftheMassandtheSacraments.ThethreeSacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist– and the two Sacraments of Healing –Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick – are examined as communal celebrations, with attention to both scriptural and historicalcontexts.TheSacramentsofService MatrimonyandHolyOrders are introducedbutarecoveredin-depthduringtheseniorlevelcourse,CatholicSpiritualityandVocations. THEOLOGYII:CHURCHHISTORY(TwoSemesters)-
Thiscourseleadsthestudentstoward a deeperunderstandingofthehistoryoftheChurchfromthetimeofChristtothetwenty-first century It includestheoriginsoftheChurch,theAgeoftheChurchFathers,thedevelopmentofcore doctrinesof faith,theMiddleAges,theRenaissance,theProtestantReformation,thespreadofthe GospeltotheNew World,theEnlightenment,theScientificRevolution,andthegrowthoftheChurchintheUnitedStates. ThecoursebeginswithselecttopicsinrecentChurchHistory,includingVaticanIIand Lumen Gentium (TheConstitutionontheChurch).Itcoverstheearlychurch,doctrinaldevelopments,andtheearlymiddle ages.Inaddition,thecoursefocusesonthewaysthattheChurchshapedandwasinfluencedbythe developmentofWesternCivilization.Thisincludesthedevelopmentoftheuniversitiesfrommonasteries andcathedralschoolsandtheinfluenceofgreatCatholicthinkersonthedevelopmentofscienceand modernphilosophies.Westudythedevelopmentofreligiousorders,theGreatSchism,theProtestant Reformation,andrelatethesetocurrenttimes.WestudytheChurch’sroleintheWorldWars,aswellasthe introductionofCatholicSocialTeaching,particularly Rerum Novarum (PopeLeoXIII’sresponsetoboth socialismandcapitalistabusesatthetimeoftheIndustrialRevolution).Wealsolookatexamplesofthe Church’sdevelopmentaroundtheworld.

THEOLOGYIII:WORLDRELIGIONS(Semester)
-Thiscourseisdesignedtoprovide comprehensiveoverviewsofthehistory,beliefs,andpracticesofthesixmajorreligionsoftheworld (Christianity,Islam,Judaism,Hinduism,Buddhism,andConfucianism).Thestudentswillresearch, read primarydocumentsusedbythemajorreligions,analyzesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenthe religions andexploretheglobalimpactofthereligioustraditions.Uponcompletionofeachunit,the studentswill demonstrateanunderstandingofthefollowingconceptsregardingeachmajorreligion: origins/historical development,Sacredtexts,Traditionsandrituals,keytheologicalindividuals,and Globalimpactofthe religion.ThecourseisindirectresponsetoPopeFrancisandArchbishop Wester’scallforinter-religious dialogueandstudy.Additionally,thematerialwillsatisfythestudents’ desiretogainafundamental understandingofthemajorworldreligions.
