oday, the variety of designs is enormous. And new ones are added every year. Designers outbid each other with great new designs.

This can overstrain, but it is also awesome! Because today the many designs and trends coexist with each other. This inspire you to buy new furniture and to create your own interior style. But unfortu­ nately this is easier said than done. If you want to create a good Interior Design for your home like a professional, you need some knowledge in design history, a sharp eye, sense of style and the most important point is to understand the language of design. One piece of a complete different language of design can ruin anything !

But "the proof of the pudding is in the eating", we will be glad to help you finding some inspirations! In this issue as well we have a lot of inspirations! THE ART OF MINIMALISM

Jörg Schellmann is actually a German gallerist. Since 1969 he produce and publishes editions of contemporary art from international artists.

In the year 2006 he has decided to produce his own furniture. His designs are of the highest class, so that the Italian company Moroso employed him to design. The result is artfully minimalism like this Conduit Sofa. moroso.it

WHY WE LOVE DESIGN

D

esign is f un and a source of pleasure. It can be said design is a need, because the visual stimulates strong emotions in all of us. Basically it is a non-verbal communi­ cation that expresses a thought or a fee­ ling. The more expressive a design is, the more beauty it radiates. Design is also an identity, for example, of a culture or of the spirit of the time. Therefore every culture and every decade has its own design. It is not a question of money, because a precious design could be

created with very simple materials. But what defines a good design ? As the industrial designer Dieter Rams said, a good design have to be honest. Whether it is practical or not, it has to make you feel touched, make you want to have it. It is not without reason that design is a billion business, because a good design is selling well. Each year there are innumerable design shows in the world, where the latest design products are pre­ sented. And all the designers only hope that theirs de­ signs become a top seller or a classic.

othing in the history of the design is as memorable as the legendary Bauhaus. So significant was the Bauhaus influence that the term 'Bauhaus' is often used synonymously with Modernism in architec­ ture and design. The story of this Avantgarde art school is moving and beautiful, but also sad. In the beginning there was a vision of a man named Walter Gropius, who founded Bauhaus in 1919 in Weimar, Germany. His vision was to unite

arts and crafts, he wanted to close the gap between artists and craftsmen. Quickly he has won eminent artists like Johannes Itten, Josef Albers, Paul Klee or Wassily Kandin­s ky as teachers.

The students learned here extensive about functionalism, mo­ dern architecture, painting, music and many more. Because of the political circumstances, the school had to move to the city Dessau and then to Berlin, where it came to a tragic end, after the Nazis came to power in 1933. bauhaus-dessau.de FA I BL E LI V I NG 43

nown as the man who inven­ ted a colour, Yves Klein was maybe the last French artist of major international con­ sequence. He was the most influential, prominent, controversial and incredibly performance artist, who al­ ways caused a sensation. All this started when he was a young boy and declared the blue sky as his first artwork and sig­ ned it. Later in his career, in 1960, he patented a colour of his own invention, which he called International Klein Blue.

Since then he caused always a stir, for in­ stance, by letting the visitors see a com­ plete empty gallery, that named ‘The Void’. Because of his playful and prodi­ g ious creative way to per for m, he was compared with Joseph Beuys. But Joseph Beuys had a longer life, he was at least 65 years old. Yves Klein had a short career.

he invasion of the colourful dots cannot be eluded. The Japa­ nese artist Yayoi Kusama is may b e c u r rent ly t he mo st popu lar ar tist in the world.

It seems that the longer she makes art, the more she is succeed. Whether tree trunks, human bodies, interior design of hotels or g iant pumpkins sculptures – there is almost nothing that she had not artistically embellish with dots. One of the latest highlights in her art career was the collaboration with the big fashion brand Louis Vuitton. The whole interior design and frontages of the Louis Vuit­ ton stores are designed by her. Further­ more there was a fashion collection that was inspirerd by her art. This can be assu­ med, because her style is also very fashion­ able. She went to the United States in 1957 and lived for a while in New York. In earlier years Kusama also wrote novels and made documentary f ilms. Kusama has received countless awards for her ar t works. Now with the age of 86, her zest for action is still intact. o photograph foreign cul­ tures and people is always tricky and requires a lot of sensitivity and decla­ rations. The major part of the work is to gain the trust of t he people. Bec au se who is plea­s ed to be pho­ tographed by a foreigner ?

I guess almost nobody. Photographers who break through this obstacle deserve great res­ pect. Like the London-based photographer John Kenny, who took hundreds of photos of local people he met on his journeys through the Sahara area. John Kenny is a professio­ nal photographer, who wanted to experience the craft of photography in a new way. Equip­ ped with a highly professional Chamonix 10 x 8 camera he traveled alone across Ethio­ pia, Kenya, Angola and the whole West Africa.

He has placed a strong emphasis to captured photographically his models ( most of them have never seen a tourist ) as authentic and esthetic as possible. john-kenny.com

nyone who sees a Suzani pattern for the first time may think of a Kelim pattern, because Kelim is known better. But that's not the same. Suzani has another origin and its own story. Suzani is a large decora­ tive tribal cotton textile and embroidered mainly with f loral or paisley patterns. This craft has its origin in the central Asian regi­ on, in Uzbekistan and Turkestan. Tradional a Suzani, which means needlework, is handmade by young women, just shortly before their weddings. It is a gift for the future hus­ band, as a symbol for love and loyalty. In the Western countries are this lovely and elabora­ tely handcrafted textiles wellknown for quite some time. Suzanis are now objects of prestige.

The original and rare pieces are hotly sought among collectors, who would spend a lot of money for it. This investment is worth­w hile because Suzanis will become ever more in de­ mand in the future. Not least a Suzani textile looks great in the interior !
