A Year of Growth and Development at SARCAN
A Year of Growth
AND DEVELOPMENT AT SARCAN
SARCAN had another year of expansion in 2019-2020. This year we welcomed 1,799,200 customers through the doors of our 72 recycling depots, and we collected, processed and recycled 438 million beverage containers.
This was also a significant year for SARCAN as we approach the end of SARC’s 2020 Strategic Plan. This plan has laid the foundation for further developing our recycling system, with several of our strategic objectives wrapping up or nearing completion this past year.
Investing in Our Future
SARC’s 2020 Strategic Plan placed a priority on ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the SARCAN system. Increasing costs in all areas of the system require new and creative approaches to ensure our costs are controlled and sustainable.
As part of our efforts to maintain our operations well into the future, SARCAN began the careful development of an investment strategy targeting land and building procurement for future SARCAN facilities. This strategy focused on completing thorough assessments of key SARCAN locations and comparing the long-term costs and benefits of leasing versus buying facilities. As a result of these assessments, SARC has purchased land and constructed a new depot in Warman in this past fiscal year (opening June 2020) and is in the process of constructing a new depot in Regina which will relocate an existing depot.
Investing in these depots will help lower our annual operating costs and improve our financial sustainability by lowering overall operating costs well into the future.
