Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Receives $5,000 Grant from Saratoga County The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is pleased to announce that Saratoga County awarded a $5,000 grant towards the rehabilitation of 128-130 Clinton Street.

After 18 years serving as City of Saratoga Springs Saratoga County Supervisor, Matt Veitch presented the check to Samantha Bosshart, Executive Director.

“It is a pleasure to assist the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation on their great project in restoring these two long-neglected homes,” Veitch said. “Thank you to my former colleagues on the Board of Supervisors for supporting this important initiative. I am looking forward to seeing the results.”

The two 1870s small worker cottages located at 128130 Clinton Street had been on the Foundation’s endangered property list for more than a decade. In November 2024, the Foundation purchased the property to save the two buildings from being demolished.

The Foundation is undertaking the rehabilitation of both structures. The Clinton Street Comeback campaign will ensure that an intact row of early small worker housing be preserved in an area of Saratoga Springs that is not located in a

local historic district and is seeing demolition of buildings.

The Foundation did not anticipate taking on another project prior to selling the 1851 Alexander A. Patterson House at 65 Phila Street because it would need the net proceeds from the sale to be able to purchase another property. Fortunately, the Foundation again secured private financing from Elisa and Mark Haworth to acquire the property. In September, 65 Phila Street was sold to CeCe Bette. The net proceeds from that sale covered the cost to purchase 128-130 Clinton Street and a portion of rehabilitation expenses.

Since acquiring the Clinton Street property, Foundation volunteers have cleaned out the houses and cleared the overgrown backyard, resulting in more than 50 yards of debris being removed. In September, Landmark Consulting was hired to provide architectural design services for the project.

Thus far, the project has received generous in-kind support from Dulmer Tree Surgeons

and Arborists, Thompson Fleming Land Surveyors, On Call Plumbing & Heating, and NLH Property Management Services. Allerdice Building Supply has again agreed to provide a generous discount on building materials in support of the project.

In December, after receiving a permit from the City of Saratoga Springs, Foundation volunteers completed interior demolition of 128 and 130 Clinton Street, removing plaster and lathe to better understand the buildings’ structural condition. The Foundation hopes to apply for a building permit soon.

Two arrested in Maxwell Appointed as Northumberland Under Sheriff robbery On January 3, 2026, State Police of Wilton arrested Sarah Z. Davis, 33, of Albany, for felony 2nd degree robbery, felony third degree criminal mischief, misdemeanor 3rd degree assault and two counts of misdemeanor 4th degree criminal mischief.

Zachary J. Bryant, 31 of Albany, NY, was also arrested for Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd and False Personation.

On January 3, 2026, at about 10:25 p.m., troopers responded to a hang-up 911 call originating from a residence in Northumberland. During the investigation, a victim was located with a facial injury.

Further investigation discovered that Davis was reportedly involved in an altercation with the victim. During the altercation, Davis allegedly forcibly

took property from the victim, prevented them from calling 911, damaged property belonging to the victim, and injured the victim. Bryant was present during the investigation and provided false identifying information, hindering it, as he had an active warrant for his arrest.

Davis and Bryant were arrested at the scene and transported to SP Wilton for processing. Bryant was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Northumberland Town Court on February 2, 2026, and then released to the Menands Police Department for the active arrest warrant. Davis was arraigned at the Wilton Town Court, where she was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 cash, $2,000 bond, or a $10,000 partially secured bond.

Saratoga County Sheriff Jeffrey R. Brown is proud to announce George R. Maxfield as his undersheriff. Brown will rely on Maxfield as his secondin-command and key confidant.

Maxfield will stand in for the Sheriff when he is unavailable for meetings, events or incidents and play a pivotal role in his leadership team.

“Having George Maxfield as my undersheriff will ensure we continue to have the best county sheriff ’s office possible to serve the residents of and visitors to our great county,” Brown stated. “His breadth of experience, from corrections officer to village police officer, to deputy sheriff, K-9 handler, investigator, sergeant, senior investigator and captain along with his recent graduation from the prestigious FBI National Academy, makes him a highly qualified choice for undersheriff. I am excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

Maxfield began his career

with the Sheriff ’s Office in 1998 as a corrections officer. That same year he was also hired as a patrolman for the Village of Corinth Police Department. In March 2000 he transferred to the Sheriff ’s Office’s Road Patrol Division. During his tenure as a deputy sheriff, he also served in specialized roles within the agency’s K9 and narcotics units.

In January 2016, he was promoted to sergeant, where he was a supervisor on all three shifts.

In May 2017, he advanced to the rank of investigator, also serving as a crime scene specialist, fire investigator, and crisis negotiator. In June 2021, he was promoted to senior investigator, where he directly supervised the Narcotics Unit, assisted in overseeing the Criminal Investigations Division, and played a key role in managing complex and high-level investigations.

In October 2023, Maxfield was promoted to captain and assumed command of

the Office of Professional Standards. In this capacity, he was responsible for agency accreditation, training for the Road Patrol Division, and internal investigations across all divisions of the Sheriff ’s Office. In March 2025, he graduated from the 293rd session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va. — one of the world’s premier law enforcement leadership programs — marking a significant professional achievement in his career. Maxfield is only the fourth member in the history of the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office to complete this prestigious program.

Beyond his professional service, Maxfield has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service, having previously volunteered with the HalfmoonWaterford Fire Department and the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Emergency Corps. Please congratulate him on this welldeserved appointment.

The Charter Review Commission has released a report outlining proposed changes to the Saratoga Springs Charter — the document establishing the City of Saratoga Springs.

The changes in this phase of the Charter Review Commission’s work only require a vote of the City Council; however, further recommendations could come that would require a referendum.

The proposed changes will be presented by the Commission at the Jan. 20 City Council meeting. During the Jan. 6 City Council meeting, Mayor John Safford praised the work of the Commission, saying that they did “exactly what I asked them to do.”

The Commission went title by title of the charter, looking for areas to improve upon. Of the 14 Titles in the Charter, only Titles one, nine and 13 didn’t receive any changes in the initial review.

Here is a breakdown of all the changes recommended by the Commission.

Title 2 Title 2 of the Charter, which establishes city offices, saw changes to the position of Supervisor, how vacancies are handled and the establishment of rules for City Council.

Under the proposed changes, the language of the charter will no longer require two supervisors, instead establishing the number as “One or more,” depending on County Law. In addition, the supervisors

will no longer be required at all meetings and are instead required to report at least quarterly to City Council.

In terms of conduct of City Council, under the proposed changes, the mayor would be required to present rules on how City Council conducts business at the start of a new term. Those rules would have to be approved by the City Council by the third meeting, or the rules revert to the previous year.

In addition to rules of order, the Commission recommended establishing a new section of Title 2 specifically dictating that all departments establish policies and procedures regarding Freedom of Information.

The final, and most contested recommendation came in regard to vacancies on City Council. Under the new policy, City Council has 70-90 days to call for a special election if the vacancy is over 180 days away from a general election. If the vacancy occurs less than 180 days away from a general election, then the special election can occur concurrently with the general election. The measure was recommended by a vote of 7-4.

Title 3 Title 3, which establishes the mayor’s office, saw some minor changes. Some of these changes had to do with updates to the Charter, reflecting previously established changes to names and city codes. It also changed the requirement for comprehensive plan review to take place once every 10 years rather than every five.

The other notable change was the official establishment of

the position of City Historian, replacing the section on public information in the charter.

Title 4 Changes to how the city manages finances were also recommended. Under the proposed changes, the Finance Commissioner is no longer required to conduct annual random audits, instead requiring audits be done when deemed necessary. Audits of the Finance Department would also be required to be undertaken by an independent auditor designated

by City Council.

The Commission also recommended formally strengthening language in the charter that establishes repercussions for those who make illegal payments, establishing that those who make illegal payments may be subject to removal. Another notable change was the requirement that all budget transfer requests have a written explanation — rather than just those which exceed 10% of the budget.

The final provision recommended in Title 4 is the establishment of an IT Administrator to oversee all information technology in the city and to establish a policy manual.

Title 5 Only minor changes were made to Title 5, which establishes the Public Works Department.

Such changes include changes to language and clarification of the duties of the department.

Title 6 The most notable change to Title Six of the charter was the formal establishment of the Civilian Review Board. The purpose of the board is to review

grievances made against the Police Department. This board was previously established by City Council and had its first meeting in May 2025.

In addition to the Civilian Review Board, minor changes were made with updated language reflecting state law.

Title 7 The most proposed changes came to Title 7, which governs the Accounts Department.

Under the proposed changes, the role of the City Assessor was almost completely rewritten with stronger requirements for training and certification of those who carry out the role and clarification regarding how assessments are to be carried out.

The other change to the Accounts Department is the establishment of the position of Risk and Safety Administrator to oversee insurance matters within the city and establish a policy and procedures manual for all city departments to follow.

Title 8 Only one change was made to Title 8 of the Charter, which deals with legal matters. Under the proposed change, contracts with outside lawyers will now require prior approval from City Council before any services are rendered.

Title 11 Title 11, which deals with contracts, saw two changes and clarifications. The first was a raising of the threshold for requiring bids. Under the proposed change, the threshold for a public works project needing a notice of bids will go from $20,000 to $35,000 while the bid threshold for a purchase contract will go from $10,000 to $20,000.

In addition, the selection of bids will conform to state law rather than just the lowest bidder.

Next Steps Mayor Safford said that the Commission will continue to review the charter and will possibly recommend larger ones down the road. As for whether these changes will be considered

by City Council soon, he said that the Council will discuss the proposed changes and may or may not implement them.

“Racing at the Dawn of the United States” Exhibition Opens at Racing Museum SARATOGA SPRINGS — Coinciding with the United States of America’s national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will mark the occasion with a special exhibition, Racing at the Dawn of the United States. The exhibition explores the foundation of thoroughbred racing in America from

the colonial period to the emergence of the United States as a new republic in the early 19th century. The exhibition will invite visitors to learn about the early history of the sport, highlighting key figures, racecourses, and horses of the time.

It will feature selections from the Museum’s collection and will be enhanced with loans from Keeneland Library and other collections.

City Approves Agreement with State over 2020 Protests.

In their regular meeting of the new term, the Saratoga Springs City Council agreed to enact new changes to how the city handles protests after an investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

The agreement comes after the state launched an investigation into how police and elected officials handled the 2020 Black

Lives Matter protests.

Under the terms of the agreement, the city neither confirms nor denies the findings of the investigation but agrees to implement changes and recommendations to how the police conduct operations during protests and other demonstrations.

Under the agreement the city will agree to remove all criminal penalties for failing to file a demonstration declaration or parade permit, but they may

impose fines. In addition, under the agreement elected officials are specifically forbidden from ordering or influencing the Police Department to investigate, arrest, and or engage in surveillance of anyone engaged in first amendment activities.

They’re also forbidden from ordering or influencing decisions on police deployment.

The agreement also dictates various policy changes to how the Police Department

handles protests and first amendment activities. Under the agreement, the department is required designate and train designated “protest liaison” officer to assist with protests over 25 people.

In addition, they must implement a four-tiered response to protests and are prohibited from investigating and surveilling individuals based solely on their involvement in first amendment activities — among other requirements.

They’re also prohibited from treating protests differently based on the message of the protest.

Under the agreement, the city has 90 days to implement the agreed-upon changes.

Public Safety Commissioner Tim Coll said the agreement will cost the city $200,000 every year.

Public opinion was mixed on the agreement, with some saying that the agreement didn’t go far enough to address past wrongs while others said the report was one sided and shouldn’t be signed by the city.

Despite these concerns, prior to the vote the agreement received the endorsement of both Mayor John Safford and Coll. Coll said that the agreement was an alternative to litigation and that the relationship between the city and Attorney General’s office.

“Over the past 18 months,

the city has had extensive and at times spirited discussions with the OAG on this matter,” Coll said. “Ultimately, we were able to find common ground and that understanding is reflected in this agreement.”

Ultimately, the agreement was passed by city council unanimously. After the meeting, Safford praised the agreement calling it a positive thing for the city and saying that they will continue to work with the Attorney General’s Office. Coll meanwhile said that a lot of the changes in the agreement have already been implemented and that they’ve seen positive results from the changes.

In addition, after the agreement was approved New York Attorney General Leticia James put out a statement calling the changes the “most extensive ever secured,” by her related to first amendment activity.

“New Yorkers have the fundamental right to speak out, organize, and protest without fear of unlawful interruption or retaliation,” said Attorney General James. “Our investigation found that Saratoga Springs repeatedly violated those rights and targeted protesters because of their message. This agreement is a significant step toward rebuilding trust between the Saratoga Springs community and its police force and will ensure everyone is able to safely express their beliefs.”

First-Ever Saratoga Snow Saratoga Spring Water Features Day Coming Jan. 17 WNBA Star in New Ad Campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A free, family-friendly, winter-themed event is coming to downtown Saratoga Springs on Saturday, Jan. 17: The first-ever Saratoga Snow Day. The event will include a snowman scavenger hunt (participants will search for “festive snowmen” in local shops), a “fire and ice trail” that will feature winter-themed food and drink offerings from participating restaurants and bars, and a free family movie screening at the Saratoga Springs City Center at 11 a.m. (film to be announced).

The festivities will kick off with a flannel-themed party from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. at Night Owl on Friday, Jan. 16. Night Owl will also wrap up the celebration with an Apres Ski Party event on Jan. 17 that features DJs performing from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Winter educational programs will also be offered at The

Children’s Museum at Saratoga on the 17th.

Downtown restaurants and venues such as Bailey’s Café, Cantina, Druthers Brewing Company, Hattie’s Restaurant, Henry Street Taproom, Kindred, Lucy’s Bar, Rhea, Scallions, The Bourbon Room, The Mercantile, Wheatfields Restaurant & Bar, and The Thirsty Owl will take part in the “fire and ice trail” experience.

“We’re thrilled to light up the winter season with an event that brings our vibrant Saratoga community together,” said Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. “Saratoga Snow Day highlights the warmth of local businesses and invites everyone to explore, shop, dine, and make winter memories in our walkable city.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Spring Water, the increasingly popular water brand founded in Saratoga Springs in 1872, announced on Monday that WNBA and Unrivaled basketball star Skylar Diggins would be the face of its newest advertising campaign.

The first chapter of the campaign will run across TV, digital, and print media nationwide starting this week, Primo Brands announced in a press release.

“Our new campaign with

Skylar, and the chapters to come later in the year, reflect Saratoga’s expansion into a broader cultural space,” said Kheri Tillman, CMO of Primo Brands. “Skylar is extraordinary on and off the court, and an ascendant figure in culture. If you could capture a perfect storm in a bottle – of talent, energy, strength and style – she’s it.”

“Saratoga is my go-to for staying hydrated while I’m on the go, and I love how that comes to life in the campaign,” Diggins said.

Following Monday’s debut of the campaign, Diggins will attend the Golden Globes, where Saratoga will return as

the “official water” of the show.

In her college career, Diggins led Notre Dame to two consecutive NCAA championship appearances. She’s a 7-time WNBA All-Star, receiving the honor as recently as 2025. She also plays in Unrivaled, a threeon-three women’s basketball league created in 2023.

In March 2025, Saratoga Water went viral thanks to a social media video created by fitness influencer Ashton Hall. In the short video, Hall repeatedly dunks his face into a large bowl filled with icy Saratoga Water.

Mouzon House Listed for $1.75 Million

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mouzon House—a Victorianstyle home that more recently served as a farm-to-table restaurant—has been listed by Julie & Co. Realty for $1.75 million.

A year ago, the restaurant announced that it was entering into a “new chapter,” deciding to no longer have regular restaurant hours but instead focusing on its Supper Club, a reservation-only dining experience available on select dates.

“After many years of pouring our hearts into running this restaurant, we’ve made the decision to shift gears and reimagine how we connect with you, our amazing community,”

the restaurant said in a statement released in Jan. 2025.

“This hasn’t been an easy decision. The restaurant business is a tough one, and after much thought, we realized it was time for a change—one that allows us to continue sharing our passion for food in a way that feels special and sustainable.”

The Mouzon House property at 1 York Street is 2,968 square feet but can expand to around 4,500 square feet of usable space during warmer months.

“The building offers intimate spaces throughout, from the garden area to private dining rooms,” states the listing.

“Fireplaces, murals, and unique design at every turn.”

41-Acre Stillwater Farm Gaffney’s Sold for $3.5 Million Permanently Protected SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Gaffney’s building on Caroline Street in downtown Saratoga Springs has been sold for $3.5 million, Roohan Realty announced on New Year’s Eve. The property was purchased by an LLC controlled by Scott and Kristine Grodsky. The new owners have already begun repairs and improvements to bring the building up to code for residential tenants. Gaffney’s is expected to reopen this spring under new ownership.

STILLWATER — Local land trust Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land and Nature) recently announced the permanent conservation of 41 acres of land known as Tanner Ridge Farm, located in the Town of Stillwater.

The property, currently owned and operated as an equine boarding and training facility by Katie Ogden and Matthew Harris, will now remain agricultural land forever through a conservation easement which will be held by the Town of Stillwater.

Tanner Ridge is located adjacent to Questroyal North Farm, which was conserved by Saratoga PLAN late last year.

These two properties, along with the neighboring Saratoga Battlefield National Park, encompass more than 4,500 acres of conserved land.

The farm sits within Saratoga County’s Agricultural District No. 1, which includes the towns of Moreau, Northumberland, Saratoga, Stillwater, and Wilton.

Established under New York State’s Agricultural Districts Law of 1971, these districts are designed to encourage the continuation of agriculture.

In addition to its agricultural value, the conservation easement preserves the area’s scenic views. The project protects views from Saratoga Battlefield National Park, as well as from nearby roadways. The

farm’s red barns, visible along New York State Route 423, are a feature of the landscape.

“The land is beautiful here,” said landowner Katie Ogden. “I know that most of the surrounding farms leading to the battlefield are now conserved in some way. As the area grows, I have peace of mind knowing that this land will remain undeveloped.

Growth is a good thing, but so is conservation. It’s a balance, really. It was very important to me that if I moved on, this place would remain farmland.”

Tanner Ridge also provides environmental benefits.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the property contains habitat with the potential to support monarch butterflies, bald and golden eagles, 19 species of migratory birds, and wetland ecosystems.

The conservation of Tanner Ridge Farm marks a major milestone for Saratoga PLAN, as it becomes the 33rd farm protected by the nonprofit conservation organization since its founding in 2003.

“Saratoga PLAN is proud to have been able to work with the town of Stillwater to help Katie and Matthew conserve their beautiful farm and ensure the land continues to provide all the environmental, economic, and community benefits for generations to come,” said Rob Davies, Saratoga PLAN’s executive director.

“This journey is a tribute to my late father,” said Shannon Welch, the bakeshop’s owner. “He was my biggest supporter, and I bake every batch in his memory.”

Welch is competing to win $10,000 to build a “backyard bake shed” to expand her business, while also raising money for childhood cancer research.

SJCA Announces a Panel How Waldorf Classrooms Help Discussion of the Critically Children Rebuild Focus and Rhythm Acclaimed Film Hidden After the Holiday Break Figures, Wednesday, As students across the January 21 at 7 pm on Zoom region return to school after Saratoga Jewish Community Arts, with a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York and the sponsorship of Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, is pleased to present a panel discussion of the critically acclaimed film Hidden Figures, on Zoom, Wednesday, January 21 at 7 pm.

The film is part of SJCA’s Social Justice series. The film Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama, co-produced and directed by Theodore Melfi and Allison Schroeder. It is loosely based on the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly.

The film follows three actual African American women mathematicians – Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson -- who challenged stereotypes and racial barriers at NASA during the Space Race.

The National Board of Review chose Hidden Figures as one of the top ten films of 2016.

Johnson is hired at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia in 1961. She becomes a pivotal figure among a small group of African American women colleagues, including Jackson and Vaughan. These talented women start out with two strikes against them: their race and their gender. They work in segregated facilities, are assigned menial mathematics calculations, and receive no respect from male colleagues.

Segregation shapes their daily experiences, particularly for Johnson. When her

skills in analytic geometry are finally noticed, Johnson joins the Space Task Group that plots critical flight paths. Her white male engineers dismiss her contributions. However, when discrepancies arise in the IBM’s computer calculations, Johnson’s unparalleled mathematical skills become evident and indispensable. Her resolve, precision and diligence help ensure the success of the Friendship 7 mission with John Glenn aboard.

“Hidden Figures,” says Phyllis Wang, Coordinator of the SJCA series, “reveals the personalities and relationships among the three, presents their skills, and portrays continuing examples of their tough experiences, but never undercuts the broader fears and oppressions of this era.”

In real life, the three women continued to excel. Mary Jackson earned her engineering degree to become NASA’s first African American female engineer, while Dorothy Vaughn blazed trails as NASA’s first African American supervisor.

Katherine Goble Johnson coauthored reports with the lead engineer and calculated crucial trajectories for the Apollo 11 and Space Shuttle missions.

In 2015, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 2016, NASA honored her enduring legacy by naming the Computational Building at Langley Research Center for her, a testament to her profound influence in mathematics and beyond.

Buying these staples directly from local farmers supports a stronger regional food system.

The market also offers an impressive selection of seasonal produce made possible through cold storage and tunnel growing, including root vegetables, squash, apples, greens, and other winter-hardy crops. These growing and storage methods allow farmers to extend the harvest while preserving freshness, flavor, and nutritional value throughout the colder months.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market • 3 large sweet potatoes (approximately 2 pounds), peeled, cubed • 1 small read onion, thinly sliced into half moons • 2 Tablespoons plus 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided

cider vinegar • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 Tablespoon honey • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/4 teaspoon ground paprika

• Kosher salt

• 1/2 cup dried cranberries

• Freshly ground black pepper

• 1/2 cup crumbled feta

• 2 Tablespoons apple

• 1/4 cup fresh chopped parsley

INSTRUCTIONS: Arrange a rack in center of oven; preheat to 400°. On a large baking sheet, toss potatoes and onion in 2 Tbsp. oil; season with salt and pepper. Arrange in a single layer.

Bake potatoes and onion until tender, about 20 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes, then transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl or in a medium liquid measuring cup, whisk vinegar, mustard, honey, cumin, and paprika.

Gradually pour in remaining ¼ cup oil, whisking constantly, until emulsified; season with salt and pepper.

Add dressing, cranberries, feta, and parsley to potato mixture and toss to combine. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

During the holiday season shopping, many of our foodie friends talked about the tools they use or need for food prep when they are cooking. So why prep ingredients ahead of time?

1. It’s easier than fullscale meal prepping. If the thought of completely preparing multiple meals in one day exhausts you, then just prep the ingredients.

2. It makes dinnertime prep quicker and easier. Batch chopping vegetables is much more efficient than the cumulative time it takes to chop things before every meal.

3. You’ll make healthier meal choices. Pulling out your cutting board and chopping a bunch of stuff can be a big a hurdle when trying to eat more healthy. If everything is prepped ahead of time, that hurdle disappears.

4. Reduces food waste.

Most of the time ingredient prepping reduces food waste because if it’s prepped, it’s more likely to get used.

Setting up to chop and peel food as you cook involves organizing your station with a sharp knife, sturdy board, and focusing on prepping ingredients in batches (wash, peel, chop) for efficiency, and using proper knife for safety and uniform cuts, ensuring even cooking and faster prep. Tools to consider when setting up your prep station: 1. Sharp chef ’s knife, a stable cutting board, and a peeler. Knife skills are very important. Use your knife safely.

The most important point of knife ownership is having a sharp knife. Always wash your knife by hand. Do not place it

4. Process ingredients in stages: first wash, then peel, then chop (dice, slice, mince) into uniform sizes so they cook evenly.

Other tools to consider are tongs needed for flipping meat, removing items delicately and stabilizing food for cutting. The use of a whisk is also another tool to use for food prep.

Whisking is a way to combine dry or wet ingredients while infusing air; whisks also emulsify sauces; and lastly whisks are your friend when you need to get lumps out.

Don’t’ forget about wooden spoons and using spatulas.

Every kitchen needs a Microplane grater, famous for its precise, fine blades that effortlessly zest citrus, grate hard cheeses (like Parmesan), mince garlic/ginger, shave nutmeg, and even create delicate curls from chocolate, making it an essential, versatile tool for adding intense flavor and texture in food prep.

Beginner Maple Syrup Course Have you ever wanted to make your own Maple Syrup? Join the Milton Grange and Corell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County on January 24 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located at the 4-H Training Center, 556 Middle Line Rd., Ballston Spa, NY 12020. We will be teaching the basics on how to make maple syrup on a small scale geared toward beginners. This hands-on class will cover identifying trees to tap, how and when to tap a tree your trees, a basic at home set up, syrup grades and products, including a taste test.

Total cost is $30, $45 for two people, which includes a pancake lunch with your choice of meat and beverage along with a sample size bottle of syrup to go home with you. Can the US Economy Pull Off a Win in 2026?

for Saratoga TODAY I’ve been writing an annual economic outlook piece for the last fifteen years, and this year’s is by far the most difficult. As the largest and most diverse economy in the world, the US has immense potential, but there are serious headwinds which make a positive 2026 outlook anything but assured.

I put a great deal of effort into writing from a purely economic perspective, but politics and the economy have become inextricably linked.

For the first time since the Great Recession, the European markets grew faster than the United States’. Take it for what you will, but we view it largely as a flight of capital due to the perceived instability of the United States: ever-fluctuating trade

policy, self-defeating immigration policies, inconsistent foreign policy, and now adventuring in regime change and serious discussions around the annexation of a fellow NATO member’s territory. Regardless of your opinion, and regardless of the long-term outcome, the perception of the United States as a stable and reliable trading partner and ally is in question, leading the international community to reassess its relationship to, and dependence on, the US. We don’t expect the volatility to subside this year. First, consider that it’s becoming more likely that the democrats will take at least one house of Congress. That matters because it creates a shortened timeline for the administration to achieve some of its more controversial objectives. The resulting instability may serve to exacerbate the flight of capital to other markets and further erode the value of the dollar.

The dollar index fell nearly 11% in 2025, which was the greatest decrease in over fifty years. A weaker dollar makes US goods less expensive in foreign markets, but it also makes foreign goods more expensive in the US. Combine that with price increases due to tariffs, and the trend of rising inflation could be likely to continue.

Through December, the ISM Manufacturing Index has signaled contraction for

the last ten months, meaning that US manufacturing is, broadly, in recession. This trend directly contradicts the case for tariffs, especially since ISM respondents blame the contraction, in part, on tariffrelated uncertainty.

Employment numbers have shown a worrying trend, as unemployment has risen to 4.6% from 4% at the start of 2025. It will be crucial to monitor this trend, as maintaining full employment is one of the Federal Reserve’s dual mandates, and will help determine the direction of interest rates in the new year.

Jerome Powell will be ending his term in May of 2026, and will be replaced by a yetunnamed appointee of the President, who has indicated a strong desire for a direct role in the setting of interest rate policy. Given that, and the republican majority in the Senate, we believe that the next Fed Chair will be amenable to the President’s influence. That said, the Fed Chair, alone, does not set interest rate policy; that is set by the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee), of which the Fed Chair is a member and gets one vote.

Since interest rates are essentially the cost of money, in the event that we see bargain basement rates, we expect markets to respond positively in the short-term, as businesses take advantage of cheap borrowing

costs to expand and invest in their operations. We’d also likely see a dramatic increase in inflation, especially in certain sectors. Homes that are already unaffordable to many could become increasingly out of reach as buyers flood the market, as they did during Covid.

I’ve written about AI in the past, and it continues to drive growth in US indices. Whether AI represents a bubble is yet to be seen, however it should be noted that, at least from a pure diversification standpoint, the dependence on these relatively few companies for growth is, itself, a major risk. Of the 500 companies represented in the S&P 500, ten companies make up 40% of the index, and almost all of those are tech companies. The last time we saw this kind of concentration in technology was just before the dotcom bubble burst, when many of those companies saw their values drop by upwards of 80%, and many more went out of business altogether.

In 2025, corporate bankruptcies reached the highest level since just after the Great Recession, with more than 717 companies filing; a nearly 15% increase year-over-year. The industrial/manufacturing sector was most affected, as many manufacturers crumbled under the weight of increasing costs due to tariffs. Personal bankruptcies also increased by more than 10% year-over-year.

While this all may sound very doom-and-gloom, it’s important to remember that the United States accounts for roughly 4% of the world’s population but produces roughly 25% of the world’s GDP. In other words, our economy is incredibly broad, our workers are incredibly productive, and our businesses are incredibly resilient. While all indicators may not be trending the right direction, one cannot underestimate the possibility that the US economy could pull off a win in 2026.

We don’t believe that it’s time to run for the hills, but we do believe that the current environment underscores the paramount importance of broad diversification in your portfolio, the need to understand your risk profile, and the value of the relationship you have with your Certified Financial Planner® professional. A Lookback on Important Developments from 2025 What you need to know as we enter the New Year

by Matthew J. Dorsey, Esq. for Saratoga TODAY In 2025, my colleagues and I reported on several developments in the law regarding our main practice areas, including trusts and estates law, guardianship, and estate planning.

I thought it would be helpful to look back on that reporting and give some reminders and updates for the New Year.

Income Tax Changes for 2026 The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) signed by President Trump on July 4th of last year ushered in some significant changes to the tax law.

I wrote an article last July covering these changes (https:// saratogatodaynewspaper.com/ july-11-july-17-2025-2/). Some highlights to keep in mind for the New Year, include four new temporary deductions: 1) up to $25,000 for tip income, 2) up to $12,500 for individuals and $25,000 for joint filers for overtime income, 3) $6,000 for taxpayers 65 and older, and 4) up to $10,000 for car loan interest for cars which have their final assembly in the U.S. All four of these new temporary deductions could result in significant savings for taxpayers, but they are all subject to income phaseouts. Another highlight is a quadrupling of the State and Local Taxes (SALT) deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 for taxpayers that itemize deductions.

Tax Changes for Education in 2026 The OBBBA expanded the use of 529 educational savings accounts by increasing the annual amount that can be used

for K-12 expenses from $10,000/ year to $20,000/year. It also increased allowable withdrawals in general, including allowing withdrawals to pay for programs that prepare students for industry-recognized licensing exams.

Estate Tax Changes for 2026 The estate tax exemption levels for New York State and the federal government both increased in 2026. The New York State estate tax exemption amount is now $7,350,000 and the federal exemption amount is now $15,000,000. The federal annual exclusion amount for gifting remains at $19,000 per beneficiary per year, which is unchanged from 2025. This is the amount of money you can give to a beneficiary without the necessity of filing a federal gift tax return (Form 706).

Trump Accounts in 2026 Trump accounts can be established starting in 2026 for children born between 2025 and 2028. If you elect to establish a Trump account for a child born during that time, the federal government will make a one-time $1,000 contribution to the account. Starting in July of 2026, additional contributions may be made by anyone who wishes to do so, subject to certain limits. These accounts are tax deferred investment accounts, which can be converted to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) when the child turns 18. More information on these accounts may be found in my colleague Anna Myers Norton’s article in November of last year (https://saratogatodaynewspaper.com/november14-november-20-2025/).

Developments re: NY LLCTA New York’s Limited Liability Company Transparency Act (LLCTA) required owners of corporate entities to report their identities to New York State. The required Reporting Companies follow the federal Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) requirements.

My colleague James Wighaus reported last April that the federal CTA was significantly limited to apply only to foreign corporate entities (https://saratogatodaynewspaper.com/april11-17-2025/). Since the LLCTA followed the federal standard, it also only applied to foreign corporate entities. The New York legislature passed an amendment to the New York law to expand the application to corporate entities formed in the United States. In December of last year, Governor Hochul vetoed the proposed amended legislation, leaving the application of the LLCTA only to foreign corporate entities. By limiting the application of New York law to conform with the federal standard, the Governor arguably prevented a significant regulatory burden from being imposed on New York businesses.

Developments re: the MAID Act In August of last year, Anna Myers Norton reported on the status of New York’s proposed Medical Aid in Dying Act (MAID Act) (https://saratogatodaynewspaper.com/august15-august-21-2025-3/).

The MAID Act had been passed by both the New York State Senate and Assembly and was awaiting signature by Governor Hochul.

In December of last year, Governor Hochul announced

she had negotiated changes in the law with the legislature and that she would sign the bill into law this month. The MAID Act will allow terminally ill New York residents to obtain prescription drugs from a medical professional to aid them in ending their lives. A detailed explanation of the negotiated changes is beyond the scope of this article, but I thought it important to update our readers that the MAID Act will become law in 2026.

I hope you find this overview of updates and reminders helpful. A lot happened in 2025, and it certainly seems like 2026 is going to be no different. I informed you last month that our firm – O’Connell and Aronowitz – celebrated its 100th anniversary in December. We have additional exciting news for this year. We will be moving

our Albany office at 54 State Street to 6 Airport Park Boulevard in Latham, where we will be occupying the entire building with our 32 attorneys and their support staff. Certainly, if a child is causing a bringing their lovey (blanket New Year’s Resolution: bring your kids to church means or stuffed animal, depending on the ruckus, he or she needs to be removed “MOTHERING BOYS”

I wrote this almost ten years ago, when my older six were still little and living under our roof (and my youngest wasn’t even on the way yet). Now that I have adult children, I am grateful they still take seriously going to church! There are certainly no guarantees, but I do believe that instilling the importance of faith in children when they’re young is important.

It’s not easy! Hopefully this article encourages any of you who are struggling to make church happen.

In our house, going to church on Sunday (or the Saturday Vigil Mass, which counts for Sunday) is a non-negotiable — all members of the family go to church (barring illness or other serious impediment). I know families who don’t bring their children to church until they’re old enough to sit and behave, but we are not that family, so we’ve had to figure out how to manage the one hour at church with a mix of newborns, toddlers, and preschoolers (the schoolage kids tend to do pretty well).

I’m not going to lie, bringing little ones to church can feel like having

your fingers chewed off. What seems like an event intended for spiritual nourishment and refueling can actually make you feel worse than you did when you walked in. I have by no means figured out how to have a wonderful experience at church when I’m in the midst of the smallest, grabbiest, loudest, most unreasonable of children, but I so firmly believe that it’s imperative for the health of my kids’ faith life in the long term to be as familiar with Mass and to understand its importance as much as possible that I’m willing to do what needs to be done to get them there each week. And though I don’t always get out of church what I’d like to, I really think the effort on the part of the adults counts for something.

God knows what we’re dealing with and how hard we’re trying.

So. How on earth do we manage? We use these strategies: (1) Don’t go alone if you can help it While I know it might not be possible every time or for every parent, and I’ve taken the kids to church by myself many times, it’s infinitely easier to have another adult with you to help manage everyone. Having both parents there is the best, but my parents and sisters have helped me

out many times in the past as well.

(2) Divide and conquer, and/or figure out a seating chart ahead of time Having more than one adult can help keep the kids separated from each other, which is such a key part of helping them stay calm. If you’re alone, or if you have more kids than adults, consider figuring out the best way for them all to sit to avoid conflict and goofing around during church.

For us, our oldest goes into the pew first, then no. 2, then no. 4, then me, then no. 6, then my husband, then no. 5, then no. 3. We’ve tweaked this and edited it as needed, and some Sundays need to be different from others. We’ve also put the troublemaker in the pew right in front of us on occasion — whoever it happens to be that Sunday, separating him from his brothers is almost always the best solution. Also, some families find that their kids behave better in the front row, but we have always vastly preferred the back row (or as close as we can get) so our shenanigans aren’t on display and distracting to others.

(3) Be sure to bring necessities I don’t mean “distractions” — I’ll get to those in a minute — I mean the things without which you’re nearly guaranteed a disaster for the three-and-under set. For us, it

boy), a bag of Cheerios, and a cup of juice (or a nursing cover, if I’m still breastfeeding). If I have those things, our chances of making it through Mass are so much better.

(4) Child-friendly distractions These are nearly on par with the necessities listed above. I bring teethers or toys for the little ones that can be attached to them with a pacifier clip (so they don’t bean someone in the head when they inevitably toss them), but the older they get, the more church-focused things I bring, like children’s books of the Saints, laminated holy cards, and a rosary or two. Also, “delayed gratification” is key. Don’t give them everything at once — give them one thing when they start to get fussy and wait for them to have their fill of it before moving on to the next item (this is the same for the necessities listed above).

(5) Choose the right time for your schedule I know not every church offers multiple services, but I’m so grateful ours does — it allows us to go to the Mass that doesn’t fall during naptime, for example. Or if getting out of the house early is problematic for your family, choose a later time if you can.

(6) Take them out when they cry — but bring them back in

from church. While I believe children should be welcome at church, I do also think we should be as sensitive as possible to those around us. But always bring them back in once they’ve calmed down! Even if you have to take them right back out again, even if you have to go in and out of church seventeen times during the service, I think bringing them back in is so important. My boys love being taken out of church, and if we stayed out with them, you can bet they’d start acting up just in order to be taken out. Bringing them back in — after a stern talking to outside — ensures they realize that acting up will not give them a free pass to get out of church.

These are the things that have worked for us over the last thirteen years, and still do (our youngest is still learning). Some Sundays are harder than others, for sure, but these tips have helped us cope and keep going to church each week. And remember: if you have to leave church early one week, or just can’t seem to make it at all, get up and try again! Eyes on the prize! If you make church a priority and commit to going, you’ll figure out the best way to do so for your family.

Another Day, Another Diner: Pat Fleming Talks Viral Videos and Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In a world increasingly filled with AI slop, there may be something refreshing about social media content that feels authentic.

Pat Fleming, a selfdescribed “Troy boy” and newlyminted Saratogian, has been to more than 100 diners, filming his experiences at 73 of them.

His lifelong love of a good greasy spoon led to “Another Day, Another Diner,” an ongoing video series that features Fleming stopping by smalltown diners to enjoy whatever the establishment recommends, plus his signature “big black coffee.” Sometimes he devours the meal accompanied only by a cameraperson, other times he’ll be joined by mayors, local politicos, or even a UFC fighter. His videos have earned him tens of thousands of followers, and, in some cases, hundreds of thousands of viewers.

“I just loved going to diners, and then one day, I looked

around and noticed that almost all the diners I was in were either empty or had an older crowd, and I realized that they were kind of dying out,” Fleming told Saratoga TODAY. “I had this idea to try to attempt to connect the next generation to these family-owned restaurants, these diners, which are unique to American culture.”

Despite having little experience in the content creation world (Fleming said he had only been on social media for a few months before launching his video series), “Another Day, Another Diner” quickly took off. Fleming attributes this to the series’ authenticity.

“It’s nothing fancy, but it’s sure not fake either,” he said.

“I’m not going to record the best videos or have the best editing…the food might not always look the best, or whatever it is, but I think that’s what people are drawn to nowadays. It’s getting back to the authentic greasy spoon-style restaurants. I think social media is full of AI and fancy stuff. I just think people want the real thing.”

Part of capturing that authentic experience entails Fleming typically arriving at a diner anonymous and unannounced, although he said that since his video series has become popular, he’s often recognized at Capital Region eateries.

As a connoisseur of local restaurants, Fleming has eaten just about everywhere in the Saratoga area. Compadres Diner is not just an under-theradar gem, but “one of my favorite diners of all time,” Fleming said. He also named Manory’s and Duncan’s Dairy Bar, both in Troy, as two of his top picks.

With a GOAT diner located near Saratoga, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Fleming now lives in the Spa City. “You have the racetrack, you have awesome food, excellent nightlife culture, the cafe scene is really cool…I mean, Saratoga is awesome,” he said.

But Fleming isn’t limiting himself to just the Saratoga area. He’s been to greasy spoons all over the country, and has trips planned to New York City, Salt Lake City, Tampa,

and Vermont, where he’ll likely shoot more videos.

Of course, there is one, sometimes hotly debated issue Fleming must contend with: What exactly is a diner? In a series of man-on-the-streetstyle interviews filmed in downtown Saratoga during the annual SantaCon event, Fleming quizzed locals on their favorite diners. Many named Compton’s or Triangle, but a few may have stretched the definition of “diner” by naming Sweet Mimi’s, The Merc, and the Charlton Tavern.

“Typically, booths and

countertop seating are very big metrics,” Fleming said. “That’s how I try to weigh it out. Does it have a booth or countertop seating, and is it cheap food?”

As his diner-going adventures continue to generate buzz, Fleming’s “Another Day, Another Diner” brand has branched out. On his website, Fleming now sells merch that includes sweatshirts, t-shirts, and his very own ground coffee.

New Year’s Eve in the Spa City

The Allman Betts Band

headlined Saratoga’s New Year’s Eve music lineup, taking the main stage at the City Center at 8 p.m. Introducing the group, which includes the sons of three founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, was outgoing Accounts Commissioner Dillon Moran. “The Allman Brothers, for me, pierced me like no other band,” Moran said. “I think you’re all sitting here for a reason. I actually was, I would guess, the youngest person that was at the famous 1971 concert up at Skidmore. As a 10-month-old, I was taken to that concert by my dad. Apparently, I was drinking Mateus wine all day and eating cigarette butts. Amsterdam Mohawks Sign Saratoga State Champion Ballplayer

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Charlie Greiner, a right-handed pitcher and member of the 2025 Saratoga Springs Section 2 Class AAA state champion baseball team, has been signed by the Amsterdam Mohawks, the team announced last weekend.

Greiner, who is committed to Florence Darlington Tech, is a submarine pitcher, which means he delivers his pitches closer to the ground in an almost underhanded or sidearm fashion.

“Greiner has exploded on the area baseball scene over the last two years,” the Mohawks said in their signing announcement.

The Saratogian’s fastball has been clocked at 85 mph, and he was the closer on the mound for the Blue Streaks when they won the state title last year.

He currently attends the PDG Baseball Academy as a post grad.

The Mohawks 2026 season will begin around the end of May.

Moreau Lake State Park Announces Monthly Hiking Series GANSEVOORT — Building on the momentum of the statewide First Day Hikes, all are welcome to join a park educator for free monthly guided hikes at Moreau Lake State Park throughout 2026.

Those who complete 10 of the 12 hikes will win a special prize.

The full list of hikes and each hike’s distance and elevation gain/loss are detailed below. Hikers should assess the difficulty for themselves based on these descriptions.

Sunday, January 11: Lake Bonita to Waterfall: 2.9 miles, +/- 297 feet Sunday, February 8: Whispering Pines at Big Bend Preserve: 4.2 miles, +/- 53ft.

Office at 605 Old Saratoga Road in Gansevoort, where parking is available. Hikers will then caravan to the respective trailhead together. Hikers are encouraged to be prepared with appropriate clothing for the weather, as well as waterproof hiking shoes, plenty of water, and snacks or a lunch. Moreau Lake State Park will have a limited number of trekking poles, micro spikes, and snowshoes for the winter, as well as sunscreen and bug spray for the warmer months available for hikers to use.

MALTA — The AlbanySaratoga Speedway will return for its 61st season in 2026, with opening day scheduled for Friday, April 17.

The motorsport venue concluded its 60th season on Sept.

20, 2025 with the “Massive Malta Weekend” event.

There was some uncertainty about the track’s future following plans in late 2024 for a 700-unit development that would’ve replaced the speedway. That development was derailed when the Malta Town Board decided not to move forward with a public workshop that would include further discussion of the project.

Howard Commander, owner of the speedway, announced in a press release on New Year’s Eve that Marcy Mangino DeVore and Pete Scully have been charged with managing the speedway for the 2026 racing season.

Marcy is the widow of Lyle DeVore, who managed the

speedway from 2012 until his death in Dec. 2025. Of Marcy and Scully, Commander said that “they have been doing the job alongside Lyle for years and doing it well. They know what needs to be done.”

Marcy previously worked behind the scenes, while Scully managed the maintenance of the facility and served as its financial manager. Both Marcy and Scully will continue in their respective roles, supported by a team of returning track employees, race teams, and sponsors.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming back everyone who supported Albany-Saratoga,” said Marcy DeVore. “Pete and I are committed to carrying on my husband’s legacy and the plans he had already started for 2026. Lyle truly appreciated everyone who walked through the front gates. There wasn’t a day throughout the year he didn’t commit 24/7 to making Albany-Saratoga the racetrack everyone wants to come to.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It took around one minute for Saratoga Springs varsity wrestler Danny Dacey to pin his foe and secure a gold medal at the Windsor Christmas Tournament on Dec. 29.

It was an especially remarkable feat considering Dacey had previously finished third at the same tournament a year ago.

Dacey’s rapid rise is attributable to dedication and hard work, said his Coach Jake Zanetti, who described Dacey as “exactly what you want in any athlete, especially in wrestling.”

“He’s a super hard worker,” Zanetti continued. “He leads by example… He’s just doing everything right. He’s super dedicated.”

Zanetti credited Dacey, who as of press time had an 18-1 record this season, with leading the charge on 6 a.m. morning lifts for his team. “He’s not afraid to put in the extra work and be that guy,” Zanetti said.

At the Windsor Tournament, Dacey faced four opponents and pinned all of them. At the Lee Van Slyke Memorial Duals on Dec. 20, he pinned three more competitors, dispatching two of them in under a minute (one in 44 seconds, the other in 25). In one event after another this season, it’s been nothing but W’s for Dacey, until he placed 2nd at the Saratoga Invitational on Jan. 3, his only loss thus far.

But the Blue Streaks as a whole captured their thirdstraight team title at that home tournament. Brendan Stoutenburg won his secondstraight title at 110 lbs., and

Chase Matter also took the top prize at 144 lbs.

Matter was plagued by injuries last season but has made up for lost time, earning a 19-2 record this season as of Jan. 7. Stoutenberg, a defending Section 2 champion, is 18-4.

Zanetti said that his squad struggled a bit at the beginning of the season due to some of his athletes still playing football while the wrestling program was starting. (In December, the Blue Streaks competed in a state championship football game for only the second time in program history). But since then, things are starting to mesh, and the victories are piling up.

“We definitely dropped some early team losses, but we’re doing all the right things to hopefully set ourselves up for a good team and individual postseason,” said the coach.

LOCAL CATERING AND HOSPITALITY COMPANY EXPANDS FOOTPRINT TO THE BERKSHIRES

CLIFTON PARK — Mazzone Hospitality, a catering and hospitality services company based in Saratoga County, recently announced a partnership with Lake House Guest Cottages of the Berkshires, owned by builder and entrepreneur Eric Taylor. Mazzone will be the exclusive caterer and managing partner of the luxury retreat and wedding venue located in Lanesborough, Massachusetts.

“The Lake House is a oneof-a-kind, four-season retreat and wedding venue and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Eric Taylor, a highly respected local builder and

developer, to help grow this destination property,” said Vice President of Mazzone Hospitality Tim Vennard. “Having previously catered an event at the Lake House Cottages, we have always been interested in returning to the Berkshires to serve local clientele.”

Taylor built the Lake House Guest Cottages of the Berkshires in 2015-2016. The resort today largely serves as a premier weekend wedding destination for guests from across the United States and as far away as Europe, Asia, and Australia.

“My goal has been to expand our current capabilities

and to elevate this beloved property into more of a year-round destination. Once I started to research Mazzone Hospitality, I was immediately impressed with their own evolution,” said Taylor. “Mazzone has built a stellar reputation for serving premier guests and properties, and I firmly believe they will be great stewards of the Lake House and a welcome addition to the local community.”
