The Legendary “Mrs. Cats”

by Sandy McBride | Sponsored by the Saratoga County History Center Contact Saratoga County History Center at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com On a cold December night in 1906, when the Champlain Canal still bisected the village of Mechanicville, a 61-year-old woman living alone in a secondfloor apartment on Canal Street heard a cry for help. Going out onto her porch overhanging the not-yetfrozen waterway, she saw a man floundering in the stagnant water.

She leaped over the railing into the canal below and swam to the man’s side. Her cries for help, along with his, did bring help and the man’s life was saved.

Who was this courageous woman who put her life on the line for a total stranger? She was called “Mrs. Cats” by neighborhood children because she kept at least 40 of the creatures as well as a squirrel in her home. A reclusive woman, she had few friends, and her life before Mechanicville and Stillwater was completely unknown to the neighbors amidst whom she had lived off and on for around 30 years. After her heroic dive into the canal, she went back to her houseful of cats and her solitary existence. Mrs. Cats died eleven years later, alone on Canal Street, on April 17, 1917. She was cremated and her ashes entombed at Oakwood Cemetery in Troy.

What was then known of Annie Blanche Scott Sokalski was that she was a widow but all she would ever say about her late husband was that he was a true gentleman and a hero of the Civil War. She had cared for a friend, Kate Hewitt of Stillwater, whose fiancé, General John Reynolds, had died at Gettysburg, until Kate’s death. She had for a time tutored the children of a family in Hemstreet Park. A member of St. Luke’s Church, she was gifted on the piano, and her neighbors, the Leylands, let her play their piano. She had directed an operetta, “Red Riding Hood”, at the Academy in Stillwater. She had supported herself selling bicycles in Stillwater and Mechanicville, and later became a door to door peddler. It was a meager existence, a lonely life, a hard life for a woman alone. It would be half a century before the rest of Annie Sokalski’s story would be known.

Annie was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1845 to the wealthy, slave-owning Scott family. She was well-educated and sang in her church choir. She also played the organ at church, and unlike most genteel southern belles, she could

ride a horse as well as a man could.

When the War Between the States broke out, the Scotts supported Arkansas’ secession from the Union, and Annie’s uncle and cousin became officers in the Confederate Army. After Ulysses S. Grant’s victory at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863, Union troops moved into Little Rock and occupied the capital city for the duration of the war. One of the officers in the occupation was Captain Sokalski.

George O. Sokalski, a career military man was born in Troy and had graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1861, a classmate of George Armstrong Custer Somehow, in the midst of war, Annie met the young captain and the two fell in love. Two days after Christmas in 1864, the 19-year-old girl and the Yankee officer were married in Little Rock. Three days later, Sokalski was ordered to the frontier. Annie, disowned by her family for marrying the enemy, went west with him.

Annie embraced the frontier life. She acquired thirteen hunting dogs. Her two favorites were named Romeo and Juliet. She learned to shoot a gun and became an expert marksman. She was a better rider than most cavalrymen. The story goes that soon after the war had ended, dressed in wolf skins and wearing a riding habit with wolf tails hanging from her skirt, she galloped across the parade ground at Fort Kearney past a stunned General William Tecumseh Sherman who thought she was an Indian.

Sokalski, who had been promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel, was next sent to Post Cottonwood in Nebraska Territory. He was a highlyregarded young officer, experienced in all phases of combat, having served in 56 engagements in the war, but he was a bit of a hothead. Being a West Point trained officer, he resented being under the command of officers who had come up as volunteers and political appointees. He soon got himself in trouble for insubordination and was court-martialed.

On May 1, 1866 Sokalski’s trial began. He would plead his own case, assisted by his feisty young wife. The case went on for 8 days, but when the time came for Annie to take the stand on her husband’s behalf, the judge declared her incompetent to give evidence. The case was lost. Sokalski was dishonorably discharged on July 10. After an appeal was rejected, he lost heart. But Annie was not

about to give up. She appealed by every means available to her, and on October 26, her husband was reinstated as a cavalry officer. The success was not to be enjoyed, however, for the 27-year-old colonel died several weeks later at Fort Laramie in Dakota Territory and was buried there.

But not for long. With no fanfare, Annie took her husband’s body home to Troy in a covered wagon. She had him buried in Mount Ida Cemetery, but she told no one. She returned to Little Rock where she taught school, but, rejected by her family, she left Arkansas and moved to this area in the mid 1870’s, living in Stillwater and Mechanicville for most of the next forty years. She tended to her many cats, occasionally made beautiful music on the Leylands’ piano and peddled trinkets door to door.

The story of Annie Sokalski came to light largely through the efforts of Major General Charles G. Stevenson, working for the Polish National Alliance in the 1960’s. With the approaching centennial of the end of the Civil War, the PNA was anxious to find the true burial site of Colonel Sokalski, who had been the first officer of Polish descent to graduate from West Point Military Academy. . Thanks to meticulous research and some persistent physical searching, the colonel’s gravesite was finally found in Mt. Ida by a young boy scout who was part of the party searching the cemetery for the grave.

Annie’s ashes were removed from the vault at Oakwood and brought to Mt. Ida on September 11, 1965. In a proper and fitting ceremony honoring Colonel Sokalski, and with prayers offered by Rev. Robert G. Field of St Luke’s Church, Annie Blanche Scott Sokalski finally rejoined the true love of her life.

The story of this fiercely independent woman of incredible courage and commitment, a giver of self, a humble and unassuming one-time southern belle who died alone at home alongside the canal in downtown Mechanicville, begs us to wonder . . . do we ever really know our neighbors?

Less than 50 days into her campaign to secure New York’s top office, Republican Congresswoman Elise Stafanik has called it quits.

Stefanik announced that she has suspended her campaign for governor of New York and that she would not be seeking reelection to Congress.

The announcement came Dec. 19 on both social media and in a statement sent to members of the media. Stefanik cited both the need to spend time with her four-year-old son and the strain of competing in a primary election as the reasons for the suspension of her campaign.

While Stefanik was widely seen as the Republican’s top choice for governor, receiving the endorsement of many New York politicians, including Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh, State Senator James Tedisco and New York Republican Party Chair Ed Cox, she wasn’t running unopposed for the party’s nomination.

On Dec. 8, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced that he would also be seeking the Republican nod, triggering a potential primary challenge for the longtime Town of Saratoga based Congresswoman.

cited this as one of the reasons she dropped out.

“While we would have overwhelmingly won this primary, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York,” Stefanik said in her statement.

Shortly after Stefanik’s announcement, President Donald Trump — who hadn’t endorsed a candidate to this point — posted on social media endorsing Blakeman for New York’s Governor. The same was true for Cox who also threw his support for Blakeman.

“Bruce Blakeman has my endorsement, and I urge our State Committee and party leaders to join me,” Cox said in a statement.

As for what comes next for the 21st congressional district, so far 11 candidates have filed to run for the vacant seat, according to records from the Federal Election Commission.

On the Democratic side, dairy farmer Blake Gendebien leads in terms of fundraising with $3,669,237.32 raised as of September. On the Republican side, Sticker Mule CEO Anthony Constantino leads with $2,603,478.61 raised, the majority coming from loans he made to his campaign.

4 Laureen “Laurie” Kyne (Boege)

Laurie passed away peacefully, and surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, December 15th, 2025, at age 67, after a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Harvey, IL on May 1, 1958 to Robert and Marjorie Boege, she spent her youth in Braidwood, IL where she loved her horses, before moving to Saratoga Springs upon the untimely death of her father in 1970.

She attended and graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1976. Soon after, she met and married Michael Kyne,

her husband of 48 years, and had three sons; Christopher, Stephen, and Robert, all of whom survive her. In life, she had many jobs, but only one career: raising her family. It was important to her that her boys never came home from school to an empty home. She loved her time spent boating on Saratoga Lake and the Hudson River, as well as sitting on the beach sand at Long Beach Island, NJ. Since retirement, she and Michael have lived in Ocala, FL. In addition to her husband and sons, she is survived by her mother, two sisters, two brothers, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and Community Hospice at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL for their compassionate care during her final days and hours.

They did what they could, but God had other plans; He wanted her home.

Malcolm “Butch” Arpei, Sr.

Saratoga Springs – Malcolm “Butch” Arpei, Sr., age 90, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on November 4, 1935, in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Peter and Helena (Parish) Arpei. Malcolm proudly dedicated many years of service to the New York State Department of Transportation before retiring.

Butch was the “go to guy,” he was always willing to help anyone that asked with nothing expected in return. He enjoyed talking with anyone, you

Saratoga Springs - Albert Frank Callucci, 82, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025. He was born on August 14, 1943, in Utica, New York, where he spent his early years and graduated from Proctor High School.

Albert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who placed his family at the center of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol (née Latella), and his cherished children: Lisa

could be a stranger and start a conversion with him.

Butch had a deep appreciation for history, particularly black powder cannons which he competed in many events.

He held a strong interest in religion. He was thankful to St Clements Church for sending someone to his home weekly to give him communion and good conversation.

He also enjoyed camping and traveling, especially the many trips he shared with his beloved wife (Ginny) and family. He particularly enjoyed their trips to Italy where they visited the Vatican and their trip to England. Time spent with family was his greatest joy. When his beloved wife became ill, he was by her side 24/7 to the end.

He is preceded in death by his wife Virginia of 64 years, daughter Ann Marie, grandson Patrick, son-in-law Doug, brothers John, Tom, Joe and sisters Mary and Kate.

He is survived by his sons, Peter Arpei (Bonnie) and Malcolm Arpei, Jr. (Dawn); daughters, Dianna Narbon (Jeff), Susan Arpei, and Lisa Maisal; sisters, Madeline Caprara and Joan Rogers; 13 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren, all of

whom will cherish his memory.

The family would like to thank the many neighbors, especially Susan, Rick, and Jenny. Maggy his Postal Carrier for always watching out for Butch. The nurses on D2, Ella and David and Tiffany, ICU. As well as, St Clements Church, Deacon Frank for their kindness and compassion.

Brady (Pat), Frank Callucci, and Christine Joyce (Brian). He was a proud grandfather to Daniel, Patrick, and Erin Brady, and Kevin, Brendan, and Kate Joyce, each of whom brought him immense joy.

In his younger years, Albert had a deep love for music and especially enjoyed playing the piano, a talent he possessed by ear. Music remained a fond and lasting part of who he was.

Albert dedicated much of his professional life to the McDonald’s Corporation, where he worked for many years. He later continued his career with the J&J Corporation. In 2012, he was appointed as a member of the City of Saratoga Springs Housing Authority Board.

Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic and reliability.

Above all else, Albert will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle whose charismatic personality, infectious

laugh, and wonderful sense of humor brightened every room he entered. His warmth, kindness, and laughter left a lasting impression on all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.

Relatives and friends may call from 11am-12 Noon on Friday, January 2 at St. Clement’s Church (231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon.

The Saratoga Springs City Council voted at its November 18 meeting to remove the 2.25% discount offered for payment in full of property taxes on or before March 1.

The decision is expected

to yield over $280,000 in additional revenue for the city. The City’s Charter Commission had looked into removing the discount as part of a broader update effort.

2026 Taxes are due on

March 1st, June 1st, September 1st and December 1st. If payment falls on a weekend or holiday, the due date will be the following business day.

NYSERDA Announces Grant Awards for Projects across the State.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has announced more than $23 million has been awarded through the 2025 Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) Initiative to 15 innovative projects that will reduce statewide carbon emissions through innovative technologies and energy efficiency upgrades.

The projects, six of which are located in disadvantaged communities, were selected by NYSERDA to participate, subject to successful execution of contracts, in the Building Cleaner Communities Competition or the Commercial and Industrial Carbon Challenge. Today’s announcement advances community and economic development across New York State while reducing energy usage, increasing comfort, and promoting cleaner air and environment.

“These innovative projects will make a significant impact across New York State by redefining how our buildings and infrastructure are designed, operated, and powered,” NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “By upgrading existing structures with energy efficient

technologies and advancing clean energy construction, New York is leading our communities toward a cleaner and healthier future.”

Commercial and Industrial Carbon Challenge Awards The Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Carbon Challenge is a competitive program that provides funding to large energy users such as manufacturers, colleges, universities, health care facilities, and office building owners in New York State to implement clean energy projects that reduce carbon emissions. Projects may utilize a combination of energy or manufacturing process efficiency strategies, carbon capture technology, low-carbon fuel utilization, renewable generation, or energy storage.

NYSERDA awarded over $5 million for two projects located in the Finger Lakes and Capital Region: • Finger Lakes Health will implement seven greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects over the next three years at Geneva General Hospital in Geneva and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan, replacing aging systems, improving HVAC system resilience, and reducing

energy use.

• The Saratoga County Sewer District will modify existing processes at the County’s existing wastewater treatment plant to provide a long-term, cost-saving solution for biosolids management that produces renewable fuels and reduces the environmental impact of operations.

“Sustainable building practices are key elements in the state’s economic, energy and environmental future,” New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said, “Our partnership with NYSERDA on our Downtown Revitalization Initiative and the State Energy Plan is creating green buildings and projects throughout the State, and our mutual commitment to communities identified as disadvantaged further ensures that our transition to a green economy is both just and equitable. We look forward to expanding that partnership into the future as we implement the Governor’s visionary and practical energy goals.”

The announcement builds on the success of these two programs. Through the Building Cleaner Communities Competition, 70 projects have leveraged nearly $1.3 billion in

public and private investment since 2018 to implement carbon neutral or net zero energy performance solutions. Through the C&I Carbon Challenge since 2018, NYSERDA has made awards that will cumulatively reduce 7.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of removing more than 1 million cars from the road annually.

Funding for this program was included in the 2025 Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. The REDC process continues to support and empower regional stakeholders in developing strategic plans and funding priorities that meet local economic needs.

Regional Councils reviewed projects from this program and provided scores that reflect how well a project aligns with a region’s goals and strategies.

Applicants utilized New York’s Consolidated Funding Application, the state’s single application for state resources, which includes programs for numerous agencies. It is designed to provide expedited and streamlined access to a combined pool of grant funds and tax credits from dozens of existing programs.

BALLSTON SPA — Stewart’s 40th annual Holiday Match campaign raised more than $1.8 million to support local children’s charities, the company announced on Dec. 29.

Stewart’s customers donated more than $900,000 during this year’s campaign.

Stewart’s doubled every donation and there were no administrative fees.

This means hundreds of nonprofit organizations that

benefit children in New York and Vermont will receive support from the 2025 Holiday Match campaign.

Since Holiday Match began in 1986, the program has raised more than $40 million to support organizations focused on improving the lives of children.

New York State Police Arrest Two Teen Pleads Following Milton Burglary Investigation Guilty in Ballston Lake Murder Acting Saratoga County District Attorney Jennifer L. Buckley announced that Jaiden A. Ildefonso pled guilty in the Saratoga County Court to Murder in the Second Degree, a Class “A-1” Felony in violation of New York State Penal Law Section 125.25.

The Defendant had been charged in connection with a fatal May 31, 2025, stabbing in suburban Ballston Lake.

The 20-year-old victim, Simon Brault, had intervened in a physical altercation between his underage brother and another minor outside his home. During the group altercation, the Defendant quickly approached and stabbed Brault- piercing his aorta. The Defendant and other minor then fled the scene.

Members of the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office and EMTs arrived almost immediately at Brault’ s home and rushed him to the Albany Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators from the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office were able to track the Defendant’s vehicle nearly 50 miles away to Schoharie County. Thanks to their training and professionalism, they were able to quickly arrive in Schoharie County, gather invaluable physical and electronic evidence, as well as take the Defendant into custody without any further issue.

The 18-year-old Defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on March 13, 2026, to 15 years to

Life in State Prison. At the conclusion of his State Prison sentence, he will remain under Parole Supervision for the remainder of his natural life.

The Defendant will also be given Full Stay Away Orders of Protection for the maximum period of time for surviving family members.

“Our son Simon was a beautiful person and everyone who knew him will tell you how nice and kind he was,” said the victim’s father, Bernard Brault. “This tragedy is senseless. We are relieved that Jaiden has admitted his role and that he is being held accountable. Nothing will bring Simon back, but we want to thank the Sheriff ’s Department and District Attorney’s Office for bringing justice.”

The Brault Family has indicated that they have started a scholarship fund at the Hudson Valley Community College in memory of their son named the “Simon Brault Memorial Second Chance Scholarship.”

The scholarship is meant to help students that have overcome hardship and need financial aid. More information concerning the scholarship may be found at the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation’s Web site.

The case was prosecuted by General Felony Unit Bureau Chief Joseph A. Frandino, Assistant District Attorney Gabrielle Treiling, and District Attorney Investigator Timothy Sicko.

On December 21, 2025, State Police of Saratoga arrested Kevin R. Kelly, 35, of Ballston Spa, NY, and Nicholas J. Murtlow, 36, of Middle Grove, NY, each for: o Burglary 2nd, a class “C” felony o Conspiracy 4th, a class “E” felony o Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th, a class “A” misdemeanor o Possession of Burglar Tools, a class “A” misdemeanor Murtlow was also

charged with a vehicle and traffic law violation.

On December 21, 2025, at approximately 1:55 p.m., Troopers responded to a home on Rowland Street in Milton for reports of suspicious activity. On arrival, Murtlow and Kelly were located on the property actively removing items from a house and placing them in a vehicle. The investigation determined that neither man had permission to enter the home or to remove items that did not belong to them. Further

investigation discovered a burglar tool in the vehicle the pair were using.

Murtlow and Kelly were arrested at the scene and transported to SP Saratoga for processing. Both were arraigned at the Milton Town Court. Kelly was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional facility in lieu of $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond, or a $100,000 partially secured bond. Murtlow was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional facility without bail.

Local State Police Troop Receives New Commander The New York State Police announced that Superintendent Steven G. James appointed Major Robert J. McConnell Jr. as the 40th Troop Commander of Troop G. Major McConnell previously served as Captain of the Troop G Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Major McConnell entered the New York State Police Academy on February 14, 2005, and upon graduation, was assigned to Troop F, SP Catskill.

In 2010, he was promoted to Sergeant and was again assigned to Troop F, SP Catskill. In 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and served many roles including the Office of Emergency Management, Professional Standards Bureau, the New York State Intelligence Center (NYSIC), and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

In 2021, Major McConnell was promoted to Captain and returned to the New York State Intelligence Center before transferring to serve as the Troop GZone 1, Zone Commander.

In this role, he oversaw the daily operations of uniformed personnel, ensuring effective law enforcement and public safety throughout Albany and Rensselaer Counties. In 2024, he transitioned to the role of Captain of the Troop G Bureau

of Criminal Investigation. In this role, he led Troop G’s investigative units, managing high-profile investigations, and fostering collaboration among various law enforcement agencies.

Major McConnell grew up in the Averill Park area. He obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Marist College in 2019. He served in the Air National Guard from 2001 – 2007, assigned to the 109th Air Lift Wing Security Forces Squadron. During that time, he was mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is married with three children and currently resides in Albany County.

“It is an honor to be promoted to Major and assigned as the Troop Commander for Troop G. I look forward to leading our dedicated team of sworn and civilian personnel,” Major McConell said. “I am committed to working with our law enforcement partners and community leaders, to ensure the communities we serve remain safe places to live, work, and raise a family.”

Kratom Regulations Signed into Law in New York

Nearly a year after the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution imploring the state to pass regulations on Kratom, their request has been answered.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed two bills into law which would require warning labels on all Kratom products sold in New York and prohibit selling it to those under 21 — on par with the minimum age for substances like alcohol tabaco and cannabis.

“Warning. This product has not been approved by the FDA. Side effects may include nausea, agitation, hallucinations, difficulty breathing, liver damage, and death,” the label is required to read. In addition, advertising or packaging stating, suggesting or implying that Kratom is all natural is banned under the new law.

The laws go into effect Jan. 1, 2026. Retailers and manufacturers who violate the new laws are subject to a maximum fine of $500 for the first offense, with manufacturers receiving a max fine of $1000 for any subsequent offenses.

“Kratom is a commercial substance that is commonly labeled an “all-natural herb”, leading people to believe it’s completely safe — but the reality is it can be extremely dangerous and unfortunately, in some cases, lethal,” Governor Hochul said. “No parent in New York should have to endure the loss of a child to a substance simply because they didn’t know what was in it. This legislation ensures transparency and strengthens our public health laws so that information about the ingredients and potential harmful risks associated with kratom are clear.”

Kratom or Mitragyna speciosa comes from a tree in Southeast Asia, according to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) — which has placed it on its “Drugs of Concern” list. In low doses, the substance has a stimulant effect while at high doses, the substance has the opposite effect, according to the DEA. According to the Food and

Drug Administration (FDA), there are no drugs, dietary supplements, or food additives approved for use in the United States. Both the FDA and DEA have warned against use of the substance due to health concerns and the high potential for addiction. Both agencies have also acknowledged a lack of research on the matter.

While there hasn’t been any federal action on the matter, some states have implemented regulations on the substance. According to the Legislative Analysis and Public Policy Association, 24 states plus D.C. have regulated the substance with six states (Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) plus D.C. classifying it as a controlled substance.

New York’s laws were prompted by the Nov. 2024 death of Saratoga County Sewer District worker, Nickolas Scribner and the subsequent advocacy of his mother, Cari.

In Feb. 2025, she addressed the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors about her son’s death and the actions needed on the matter.

“Nick had a very common affliction: insomnia. Since he was a child, he could not sleep,” his mother, Cari Scribner said, as previously reported by Saratoga TODAY. “A friend told him about an herbal, all-natural energy enhancer to overcome fatigue with no side effects. This substance was kratom. Of all the adults that I’ve talked to about it about 10% have heard of it; of all the kids I’ve talked to about it, it’s 100%.”

According to Scribner, her son did not mix the substance with other drugs or alcohol and asphyxiated from the contents of his own stomach while sleeping on his back. After the death of her son Scribner began pushing for more regulations on Kratom in order to prevent other parents from going through what she went through.

These efforts worked. By the time Scribner addressed the board, four pieces of legislation had been introduced at the state level to regulate Kratom. The next month, the Saratoga Country Board of Supervisors passed a resolution urging the state to take

action on the substance.

In signing the bills into law, Governor Hochul thanked Scribner for her efforts championing the legislation.

“Given the choice to retreat into the pain and the anguish of the unspeakable loss of a child, or to turn around and try to save other families from knowing the pain that she and her family

“I am grateful for all the support of these new laws restricting kratom and protecting people from potentially serious and lethal side effects,” Scribner said. “We are spreading the word about kratom being a drug, not an herb, to keep other families from suffering the loss my family underwent.”

State Police arrest Ballston man following assault investigation On December 26, 2025, State Police arrested Richard J. Marcella, 61, of Ballston, NY, for Assault 2nd and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd.

On December 26, 2025, at about 10:30 p.m., Troopers responded to a home in Ballston for the report of an altercation with a weapon. The investigation determined that Marcella was in a verbal altercation with a known neighbor when he

allegedly stabbed the victim in the arm and hand with a knife.

The victim was transported to Saratoga Hospital for treatment of their non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Marcella was arrested at the scene and transported to SP Saratoga for processing.

He was then arraigned at the Malta Town Court, where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail.

New York Bill Mandating Warning Labels on Social Media Signed into Law

A new bill signed into law

by Governor Kathy Hochul will require warning labels to be displayed on any social media platform that offers auto-play or infinite scrolling and other features.

The new law was signed on Dec. 26 and will go into effect sometime in 2026. Under the new bill, platforms would be required to display an un skippable warning when a user initially uses one of the features cited in the law and periodically based on continued use.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe has been my top priority since taking office, and that includes protecting our kids from the potential harms of social media features that encourage excessive use,” Governor Hochul said.

“New Yorkers deserve transparency. With the amount of information that can be shared online, it is essential that we prioritize mental health and take the steps necessary to ensure

that people are aware of any potential risks.”

The new legislation comes after a 2023 advisory by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office said that children and adolescents who use social media for more than three hours a day are more than twice as likely to develop mental health symptoms than those who don’t. This was notable as the Surgeon General’s Office placed the average social media usage of those aged 13-17 at 3.5 hours a day.

The legislation cited this advisory and subsequent calls by the Surgeon General’s Office to implement warning labels as the primary motivator behind the bill. While the law is designed to target younger users, it doesn’t specifically require that the warning exclusively target them.

In addition to infinite scrolling and autoplay, the law also targets features such as like counts or push notifications not explicitly requested by the user. The text and scope of the warning was not

written into the legislation and will be determined later by the Commissioner of Mental Health in coordination with the Commissioners of Health and Education.

Platforms who violate the law will be subject to a maximum of $5000 or further relief, depending on what the court decides.

New York isn’t the first jurisdiction to target social media platforms. In Oct. 2025, New York City filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against several social media platforms, accusing them of encouraging addiction through their algorithms and engaging in practices akin to gambling through features such as likes and dislikes.

Three other states — California, Colorado and Minnesota — enacted similar legislation this year while outside the US, Australia outright banned social media for anyone under 16.

It’s unclear what legal hurtles the New York law run into.

Soon after Colorado passed it’s

law requiring platforms to tell users about the dangers of social media, a lawsuit was filed by industry group NetChoice.

As a result, their law was struck down by a federal judge in a preliminary injunction. It has since been appealed.

“The Court fully appreciates Colorado’s legitimate effort to protect the children and adolescents of our state

from the impacts of social media use on their health and wellbeing,” Judge William J. Martínez wrote in his ruling.

“The Court concludes, however, that it is substantially likely NetChoice will succeed on the merits of its claims that Colorado may not pursue this laudable goal by compelling social media companies to speak its expressive messages.”

Toys for Toga Donates Winery’s New Tasting Room and Bottle Shop 5,500 Toys Opens in Downtown Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS — With the support of a record 125 Saratoga County businesses, Toys for Toga donated an estimated 5,500 toys to three Saratoga County nonprofit human services organizations on Dec. 17.

Included in this year’s donation was $18,000 in gifts and technology specifically designated for teenagers—an age group that often has the greatest unmet needs during the holiday season. These donations were made possible through sponsor support and the community fundraising efforts that have been the foundation of Toys for Toga since its inception. Items included video game consoles, tablets, headphones, scooters,

bikes, clothing, and other wish-list items requested for specific children.

Toys for Toga donations are split evenly between the Franklin Community Center, CAPTAIN Community Human Services, and the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center.

The donations were delivered to beneficiary organizations following a press conference held at DeCrescente Distributing Company in Mechanicville.

According to the recipient organizations, an estimated 1,700 children across Saratoga County will benefit from this year’s donations.

Toys were collected at local restaurants, hotels, bars, retail stores, schools, clubs, and other community locations from Nov.

3 through Dec. 13.

“Toys for Toga was founded on community partnership and a common goal of making the holidays special for the kids in need right here in our community,” said Toys for Toga Founder Max Oswald. “We really saw that spirit come to life this year, with the most toys we’ve ever collected at a time when they are needed the most. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s program a huge success.”

Other fundraising efforts in this year’s Toys for Toga campaign included: • Death Wish Coffee gave away free coffee for toys at their downtown Saratoga Springs offices.

• Druthers Brewing Company made four packs and kegs of its Toys for Toga Winter Ale, distributed by DeCrescente Distributing Company, that benefited the program.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Shimmering riesling, citrusy gewurztraminer, and sweet vignoles filled the empty glasses of red-clad revelers a week before Christmas, which was the soft opening of Keuka Spring Vineyards’ new tasting room and bottle shop on Saratoga’s Spring Street.

The Finger Lakes-based winery initially opened a smaller outpost inside the Saratoga Marketplace last year before deciding to upgrade to a larger space; one more suitable for wine tastings, camaraderie, and group events.

“When we originally moved here, there was really nothing available, so we took that lease in the Marketplace,” said Autumn Manning, Keuka’s East New York regional manager. “It was 300 square feet. We didn’t even have plumbing, so we only offered $15 wine tastings in a plastic cup.”

Despite its constricting former digs, Keuka managed to acquire more than 200 wine club members, Manning said.

But much has changed. Takehome cups have been replaced with proper glassware. A cooler is stocked with local cheeses and meats. Fresh bread, baked by the Saratoga-based Bread

Basket, is available. A back room is lined, practically floor to ceiling, with bottles that surround a glass table supported by wine barrels. (This bottle shop can host as many as 17 people and be reserved for celebratory events like bachelorette parties.)

Also, the bar top in the front tasting room was made from trees cut down at the vineyard’s Finger Lakes location, where it served as the winery’s bar top for decades before moving to its new Spa City home.

Keuka was enticed to enter the Saratoga market due to a combination of factors, Manning said: The vineyard’s license allows it to have up to seven tasting rooms in New York State, Keuka was already collaborating with the Saratoga Eagle distribution company, and the New York Racing Association was interested in having Keuka pour its wines at the Saratoga Race Course. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The AC Hotel Saratoga Springs at 176 South Broadway (the former site of the Turf & Spa Motel) welcomed its first official guests on Dec. 16 before hosting a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 19.

The 120-room hotel features a European-style breakfast in its kitchen, coffee and lattes at

its cafe, and drinks and tapas in its Spanish-inspired lounge.

“This is an investment,” said Discover Saratoga President Darryl Leggieri at the ribbon cutting. “This is an investment for, obviously, for larger hospitality, but also for Saratoga Springs and for Saratoga County. This is going to attract leisure travelers, corporate travelers, meeting attendees, and that’s going to drive economic impact. I think the AC brand is a perfect fit for Saratoga Springs.”

BALLSTON SPA — The Real McCoy Beer Co.’s Ballston Spa location, the historic former home of Civil War General Abner Doubleday, closed on Dec. 29 after six years in business, but also announced that it would soon reopen in partnership with another brewery.

“We have found a new brewery to partner with for 2026,” Real McCoy said on its social media pages. “We will be shut down for a few weeks at the beginning of the year to prepare for our reopening. Stay tuned to this page for more info.”

Real McCoy has two other locations currently open in the Capital Region: its main brewery in Albany and a taproom in Delmar.

Meanwhile, the Dancing Grain Farm Brewery in Gansevoort—known for its sunflower fields, scenic vistas, and live music events—shared on Dec. 23 a video of a new barn-like structure being built on its property with the caption, “A new place for you to gather coming 2026!”

The family-owned Dancing Grain hosts a number of seasonal events at its farm/brewery, including concerts, Buffalo Bills watch parties, trivia nights, and an upcoming “Disco Inferno” Christmas tree bonfire fundraiser on Jan. 10.

MLK Saratoga’s Annual Dr. King Celebration Weekend Kicks off Friday January 16 and Runs through the Official Holiday on Monday January 19.

This year’s theme is Dr. King’s quote, “Love is the greatest force in the universe; it is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos.”

This sentiment reflects Dr. King’s belief that unconditional, active love is the most powerful force for justice and human transformation. He taught that this transcendent love is not sentimental or weak, but a strong, practical, world-changing power capable of breaking cycles of hatred and turning enemies into friends.

The line comes from a note he once wrote explaining the meaning of love, echoing themes from his 1963 book of sermons: Strength to Love, where he frames love as the foundation of nonviolent resistance. Ultimately, King saw love as the moral center of the universe and the essential path to a just and humane world.

Winter Fun Day January Preschool Nature at Wilton Wildlife: Time at Wilton Wildlife Scavenger Hunt and Bonfire Event Get ready for a day of outdoor adventure and cozy fun!

Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park invites community members of all ages to join them for a bonfire on Monday, January 19, from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Town of Wilton’s Camp Saratoga. This event is perfect for parents looking for enriching winter activities for their kids, or individuals just looking to get outside!

A drop-in event: participants are invited to stop by the fire circle located next to the bathrooms at Camp Saratoga for hot cocoa and s’mores around the fire.

Looking to hit the trails?

In addition to the bonfire, there will be a scavenger hunt that can be completed while walking, snowshoeing, or skiing the trails. Scavenger hunt sheets will be available at the Welcome Cabin located in Parking Lot #1 (90 Scout Road, Wilton) between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Return your sheet by 4:00 PM for a small prize!

Winter rentals will also be available at the Welcome Cabin from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.,

with all rented equipment needing to be returned by 3:30 p.m.

Rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis. Adult and child sizes are available. Rentals are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children and students.

Members of Wilton Wildlife have access to rental equipment at no cost. Additional Winter Fun Days will be held on Saturday, February 7, and Monday, February 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Led by volunteer Lisa Cohen and a Wilton Wildlife environmental educator, preschoolers will embark on a brief stroll through Camp Saratoga,

keeping their eyes out for tracks.

After the walk, children and their caregivers will gather for a cozy lineup of animal-themed stories, hands-on activities, and a creative craft designed especially for ages 3-6.

This program is primarily held outdoors to celebrate the season, though activities will be moved indoors if the weather calls for it. An adult must accompany each child.

In a medium bowl, stir together tomato paste, vinegar, honey, garlic, soy sauce, chicken broth and corn starch.

Add chicken breasts to a 4 to 6 quart slow cooker and top with potatoes and carrots. Season with salt and pepper.

Pour half of the mixture over the chicken and vegetables in the slow cooker. Keep the other half in the fridge.

Cover slow cooker and cook for three hours on high (or about six hours on low).

Add broccoli and snap peas to the slow cooker (don’t stir, they will steam), cover and cook for another 30-40 minutes until tender-crisp and chicken is cooked through.

Meanwhile, pour remaining sauce into a small pot and cook over medium heat, whisking often, until thickened. Serve chicken and vegetables with extra sauce.

Zucchini Salad with Burrata

Hello my Foodie Friends !

The hangover of the holidays is over and it’s time to get back to eating right and using great tools to make that happen.

It’s a new year and a fresh start so let’s make some delicious food together. My older sister CarolAnn, is a master with mandoline slicers while using them frequently in her food prep. Since she is eight years older than I am, when I was very young, I thought she was the smartest person in the world.

When she taught me something it always stuck with me. I was a terrible listener with everyone except for her. I remember when I was young and allowed to visit her at her new house after she had gotten married, I would sit in her kitchen and watch her make the best salads.

She would include many ingredients in her salads so that you were as full as if you had eaten a plate of Italian food. CarolAnn’s secret weapon in her prep was the mandoline slicer. She would peel and make cuts to cucumbers and many other vegetables, then would run them through the mandoline slicer to make the perfect bite sized pieces. As she was doing all of this, she would explain every step and how to be safe. She would also add in words of wisdom about life and work.

As I reminisce on these times, I learned that food creates a home, connections, celebrations, and embraces family and friends. In creating meals, we are creating homes and a nurturing environment. The meals do not have to be fancy or gourmet. It isn’t about how special the recipe is. It is about being conscious of an important part of life and honoring that

Do you have a mandoline slicer hiding in the back of your pantry, just begging to be used?

Essentially, you can accomplish much of a mandoline’s work with a steady hand and a sharp knife.

However, when slicing up zucchini ribbons, slicing eggplant or shredding brussel sprouts, mandolines cut prep time down significantly and promise consistent, even results. And they’re fun to use; especially when you need to create consistently thick or thin slices for your favorite recipe. At Compliments to the Chef we carry several different brands of mandolines. The OXO Good Grips mandoline is a perfect tool for home chefs. It is a trusty tool through thick and thin (produce). Slice or julienne cucumbers, potatoes and more with a turn of the comfortable dial on the Chef ’s Mandoline Slicer.

steel blade quickly makes even slices. All blades store safely on board and are removable for easy cleaning. With this easyto-use mandoline hands and fingers stay away from sharp blades at all times. These allow you to slice paper thin, a little thicker (think potato chips), thick julienne (think french fries), and thin julienne. If you’re not sure how your blades will slice, invest in a few potatoes and try each setting out. It’s usually a good idea to have a few extra veggies on hand when you’re learning to use your mandoline slicer as well so you can get the hang of the whole process.

• 3 large zucchinis (about 9 ounces each), stem ends trimmed • 2 tablespoons torn fresh basil • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill, plus more for garnish • 1 (4.4-ounce) ball burrata cheese, torn into 1/2-inch pieces

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THE BROTH: 1. Whisk lemon juice, oil, honey, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper together in a small bowl until emulsified.

2. Using a vegetable peeler or a mandoline, shave zucchini lengthwise into thin ribbons; discard seedy centers. Transfer to a large serving dish. Add 2 tablespoons of the dressing, basil and dill; toss until fully coated. Top with burrata and drizzle with the remaining dressing. Garnish with additional dill and pepper, if desired.

Former SPAC Chief Marketing Upstate Life of Abraham Lincoln Confidant Officer Joins Palace Theatre Team ALBANY — The Palace Performing Arts Center announced on Dec. 19 that Michele Desrosiers has joined the Palace Theatre as its new managing director.

According to her LinkedIn page, Desrosiers was the chief marketing officer at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) from Oct. 2017 until Sept. 2019.

In her new role, Desrosiers will work closely with Executive Director Kevin Johnson to strengthen marketing and fundraising initiatives, expand audience engagement, and deepen partnerships with community organizations across the Capital Region, the Palace Theatre said in a news release. Desrosiers will focus on elevating the Palace’s visibility, enhancing donor and sponsor relationships, and broadening the theatre’s reach throughout the region.

Desrosiers’ background spans performing arts

leadership, nonprofit management, strategic communications, and brand strategy. She has led large-scale marketing campaigns, driven organizational rebrands, and guided audience growth strategies.

Her regional arts experience includes leadership roles at both the Capital Repertory Theatre and SPAC, complemented by corporate marketing work across technology, finance, and professional services sectors.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Upstate New Yorker William H. Seward purchased Alaska, miraculously survived an assassination attempt, led the Republican Party in its formative years, personally housed fugitive slaves as part of the Underground Railroad, and helped guide the Union to victory in the Civil War as President Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State.

Yet, the details of the almostpresident’s life have been mostly overlooked. Seward, it seems, is always a supporting character in someone else’s story.

A new book that draws upon 25,000 pages of Seward’s never-before-seen private correspondence hopes to change that.

“The Sewards of New York”

by Thomas P. Slaughter is the result of a more than 12-yearlong project to digitize and

archive Seward’s papers that were discovered inside baskets and trunks. The letters shed light on many aspects of the Sewards, revealing them to be one of the most important political families of the 19th century.

The tome includes countless references to the Capital Region (Seward served as both governor of New York and as a member of the state Senate in Albany). It also provides intimate glimpses into the lives of a family rocked by war and violence (an injured and bedridden Seward was viciously stabbed by one of John Wilkes Booth’s coconspirators; three of Seward’s children were present during the attempted murder).

The book also explores the Seward family’s close ties to Auburn, a small city in the Finger Lakes region that today is the site of the William H. Seward House Museum.

SPAC Accepting Submissions New Saratoga Poet for Festival of Young Artists Laureate to Host Poetry Repair Café

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) recently announced that it is accepting visual art, literary art, and performing art submissions to be featured at “The Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists” online exhibit and live event on May 31, 2026. Numerous works will be selected with one student in each category receiving the “Outstanding Artist Award” and $500 to support the further development of their craft.

SPAC is also once again partnering with Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) to

offer the Student Composition Contest, selecting one student composer to have their work premiered by the ESYO Symphony Orchestra during the festival.

Returning for its 9th annual event, The Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists will celebrate the collaborative creativity of more than 700 of the Capital Region’s brightest young dancers, musicians, singers, poets, and visual artists all in support of SPAC’s mission to provide free access to enriching arts programs for local youth.

This year’s event will follow the theme “seasons,” celebrating

cycles of growth, transformation, reflection and renewal, while also commemorating 60 years of SPAC. High school students, middle school students, and youth ensembles who reside in or are part of a school or organization based in the following NY counties are invited to submit photos of artwork, digital copies of literary compositions, and videos of performances: Albany, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Warren, Washington.

“Sounds in Winter” Concert Series Returns to Brookside Museum BALLSTON SPA — Now in its third year, the “Sounds in Winter” Concert Series will continue with a Jan. 17 performance by the Eribeth Trio at the Brookside Museum.

Based in the Capital District, the Eribeth Chamber Players have performed throughout the northeast, as well as in Germany. With flexible instrumentation, the group presents a variety of programs, from string quartet and piano trio concerts to collaborations with actors and dancers. The Eribeth Trio is made up of local musicians Elizabeth Silver on violin, Erica Pickhardt on cello, and Kristen Tuttman on the piano.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — New Saratoga Springs poet laureate Jay Rogoff will host a Poetry Repair Café at Northshire Bookstore on Sunday, Jan. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will allow local poets to meet with Rogoff to help improve or fix their poems-in-progress.

“Sometimes a poet just needs a second pair of eyes—or ears—on a poem to realize what kinds of changes might help improve it,” Rogoff said.

Rogoff is an award-winning author of eight books. His most recent collection of poems is “Loving in Truth: New and Selected Poems.” He was named the Spa City’s second poet laureate at a Sept. 16, 2025 city council meeting. His two-year term begins this month.

“Jay Rogoff was the very first poet to give a reading at Northshire’s Saratoga store after we opened this location in 2013, and we’ve welcomed him back many times since then,” said Northshire’s Events Manager Rachel Person. “All of us at Northshire are thrilled to

Acclaimed Author Stops in Saratoga to Talk Meryl Streep, The New Yorker, and the State of Media

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Susan Orlean, a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992, has lived a life worth documenting.

She was portrayed by Meryl Streep (albeit in a highly fictionalized fashion) in the brilliant 2002 film “Adaptation.”

As a journalist, she’s spent time on cult compounds, soaked up waves and wisdom with Maui surfers, and maintained decades-long employment at one of the world’s most esteemed magazines.

Her latest book, “Joyride,” is a memoir that offers both a deeper understanding of the author herself and the many fascinating figures she’s profiled. What does it feel like to be welcomed into a cult commune? How did a horticulturist come to be arrested for poaching rare flowers? What is the life of an ordinary 10-year-old suburban boy really like? What exactly goes on at the World Taxidermy Championships?

“Joyride,” Orlean embarked on a coast-to-coast book tour that included a stop in Saratoga Springs. On Nov. 17 at Skidmore College’s Palamountain Hall, Orlean fielded questions from the audience and was interviewed by WAMC radio’s Joe Donahue. The event was presented by the Northshire Bookstore (the shop’s Director of Events Rachel Person called Orlean a “longtime Northshire staff and customer favorite.”)

Below are highlights from Orlean’s chat in the Spa City, edited for length and clarity.

Joe Donahue: At what point did you think to yourself, “Oh, that may be a good idea [to write a memoir]?”

Susan Orlean: I never thought it was a good idea [audience laughs]. What happened was, I had begun thinking about writing a book about writing, and the more I thought about it, the more it sounded like the process of writing a book about writing wouldn’t be very interesting. It sounded really pedantic and dry. At that same time, I was reflecting on this astonishing realization that I had

written “The Orchid Thief ” 25 years earlier. I was so struck by that, it seemed so monumental. So, it put me in the mind of reflecting on that period of time.

“The Orchid Thief ” wasn’t even my first book, but I just thought, “Boy, I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve collected so many stories, not only what’s on the page, but the stories of how I did those stories.” It occurred to me that I could write a book about writing that, at the same time, sort of traced the path that I’ve taken and be a conversation with readers that was more personal than what I’m usually doing.

JD: You write in the book: “Being a writer is so much fun.”

And this is a line I love: “It’s Make-A-Wish for the curious.”

SO: It really is. I sometimes am humbled by realizing how crazy it is that I can conjure a thought, like “I really want to learn about taxidermy,” and the next thing I know, I’m learning about taxidermy. Maybe that doesn’t appeal to everybody here, but to me, it was extremely exciting. It’s almost—if I can think of it, I can write a story about it.

JD: How did you write “The Orchid Thief”? You have the book in your hand. Someone from Hollywood takes the book. They go off, and the next thing you know, Meryl Streep is playing you.

SO: Yeah, it was a different experience [audience laughs] than a lot of people have… I thought the whole thing was a joke that it got optioned.

Because when this book got optioned, I thought, “This is so not a movie. I cannot imagine why you’re optioning it.” But of course, you’re not going to say “No.” I just thought, “Good luck.

I have no idea how you’re going to make this into a movie.” The book was a very interior kind of meditation on orchids, on passion, on Florida. The crime at the center of it is relatively small. No one gets killed. There are no car crashes. I remember at the time that it got optioned, saying to my husband, “They’re probably going to make the crime a murder, they’re probably going to jazz it up and make it a Hollywood movie,” which

they kind of did, but not at all the way I pictured that it would be made into a Hollywood movie. The thing is that I never thought it would really get made. Most things that get optioned don’t get made. The percentage is maybe 1% of the things that get optioned. That’s just the way Hollywood works.

So, when I got a call and they said, “Well, we’ve got the script.”

I thought, “What? Seriously?”

And then when they showed me the script, I said, “Seriously?

No. Absolutely not.” I said, “You’re going to ruin my career, and I don’t want to be a character in a movie.” I got a lot of puppy-dog eyes. “Really, are you sure? Everybody else said ‘Okay.’” And I kept saying, “No, no, no, no, no, this is nuts.” And then my curiosity got the better of me. That feeling that I have, which is, I’d rather not not do something. I don’t always want to do things, but I don’t want to not do them. So, given this kind of knife edge that I was on, I finally, in the last minute, said, “All right, fine.” And then it was this crazy ride and obviously the film is a very complex meditation on the nature of the book.

I’m far more glad that that is the movie that got made than what I pictured, which was basically taking my book, kind of amping up the drama a bit, and making a typical Hollywood movie.

JD: Who were the writers that you were reading in The New Yorker and thinking, “Man, they got it?”

SO: Oh gosh, it’s a long list.

Calvin Trillin, Ian Frazier, Marc Singer, Alec Wilkinson, and then the older writers, Joseph Mitchell, A.J. Liebling, E.J. Kahn.

I mean, it’s a long list and I’m probably leaving out lots of people. It was an awe-inspiring and, of course, somewhat humbling, rogue’s gallery to be joining. These were the people when I think about John McPhee, and in fact, my first office at The New Yorker was right across from his, and I really felt like, how do I get to sit in an office across from John McPhee? I’m not worthy. That’s why when I wrote the introduction of “Joyride,” I really did feel that I was in the

land of giants, that these were the giants of nonfiction writing, and to be in their presence was truly inspiring. They’re in the office regularly, people like Roger Angell and Marc Singer, they were all in the office all the time. So just being around them and also seeing that when they turned stories in, they got nervous. That was actually somewhat comforting to see that even when you reach those pinnacles that they had reached, they still went through all of the same emotions of figuring a story out, not being sure whether it worked or not, waiting to hear from their editor. I remember one day seeing Roger Angell kind of pacing in the office, looking very unhappy. I said something to my editor, and I said, “What’s going on?” He said, “Well, he’s waiting to hear about a Talk of the Town piece he wrote.” The Talk of the Town pieces are these short little pieces. Roger Angell, at that point, had done millions of features, millions of books. He was one of the great writers of The New Yorker and he was still pacing the hall nervously waiting to hear if a Talk piece had worked.

JD: To this day, when you see your work in The New Yorker…still a thrill.

SO: Oh, an absolute thrill.

Absolute thrill. I think it’s as exciting, seriously, as exciting as the very first time. I still, after having been there now for a long time, I still see my writing in The New Yorker typeface, and I kind of can’t believe it. I still feel like I can’t believe this.

This is so, so exciting.

Audience member: Before, when you were talking about all the different writers that you worked with and that influenced you, it seemed most of them were men. When you started at The New Yorker, were there many women? And would you consider yourself a trailblazer in that way?

SO: No, The New Yorker has always had a very healthy number of women writing for it. In fact, the first, I believe, deputy editor back when the magazine was founded, was a woman. In collaboration with a man, but she was definitely

at the forefront. Early on, you had writers like Janet Flanner.

When I arrived, there were a lot of women writers. It happens that the list that I gave you, I mean, I could add to that Lillian Ross, Joan Didion. There were a lot of women writers who I really admired. Lillian Ross was a really important figure at the magazine. But also at that time, they had Andy Logan covering City Hall, Pauline Kael. There were a lot of women and there always have been, even at a time when maybe that wasn’t as true at other publications.

Audience member: How does one get a job as a writer in today’s market?

SO: This has been the question that has dogged me on my book tour because, without realizing it, in writing my book, I kind of trace an arc that no longer really exists. I started at alternative news weeklies, which by and large are gone. I wrote a lot for Sunday magazines, which are almost entirely gone. It’s a different world. I don’t have a quick answer to that. I should try to devise one because I’m asked a lot, and I think there are ways that being published has become somewhat easier. Not getting paid but getting published.

Anyone can start a Substack.

Anyone can post online. There are all sorts of easy ways to get published, but that’s not the same as supporting yourself as a writer or getting editing. One thing that has changed that I recommend to young writers is every magazine has a website that has infinitely more room for writing than the print publication.

It’s just a matter of dollars and cents. You can have a gigantic website and it doesn’t cost you the way printing pages costs. So,

younger writers have a bit of an easier time getting in through the website. But I don’t have an easy answer. I feel lucky that the things existed when I was coming up because those seem so much more accessible than what is going on today. I remain optimistic about people’s desire to read good writing. I will continue believing that until I’m absolutely proven wrong. But is it easy to make your career that way, or is it harder than it used to be? I think it has become harder.

THOUGHTS ON EDITORS During her conversation, Orlean also shared her thoughts on some of the well-known editors she’s worked with at The New Yorker.

On Tina Brown: “When Tina came in, she had a completely different attitude. She wanted the writers to be stars.

She commissioned fancy headshots of everybody with the idea originally that they were going to run in the front of the magazine. It never ended up happening. But she just didn’t understand why you wouldn’t want to promote your writers as stars.”

On David Remnick: “He knows me well and he knows that if I get really excited about something, that I could probably figure it out. He doesn’t always immediately get what I’m trying to do with the story, but he’s willing to let me take a shot at it. I remember when I had, through an accident, coming across a taxidermy catalog, and I got really excited, and I thought, “Oh my God, taxidermy. Who thinks about taxidermy and who knew that it was such a thriving business that it would have an industry catalog this thick?” I was super excited

about it. I Googled taxidermy, and lo and behold, the World Taxidermy Championships were coming up. So, the next day, I burst into the office, and I said to Remnick, “Can I cover the World Taxidermy Championships?” And he said, “Let me think if I already assigned it to someone.”

On Robert Gottlieb: “He was wonderful. He’s a brilliant man and also very playful and very open to eccentricity because he was eccentric himself. He didn’t edit my pieces.

He read everything. He wasn’t my hands-on editor, but he absolutely was open to the ideas that I was bringing early on that were pretty out there.

He let me go at them. My first full-length feature, which I did under his reign, was I had heard about a cab driver in New York who was the king of his African tribe. I just thought, this is a fantastic story and I really want to do it as a feature. He just said, ‘Absolutely. Go ahead, that sounds great.’ So he was very open to ideas that push the boundaries of what maybe was a typical magazine piece and I loved working with him.”

After decades in the film industry, Baratta made his return to jazz, earning a Grammy nomination for his 2020 album, “Music in Film: The Reel Deal,” which reimagined iconic movie soundtracks in a jazz setting.

His follow-ups, “Music in Film: The Sequel” and “Off the Charts,” solidified his place as a boundary-pushing bandleader and musician. The drummer-bandleader’s most recent album, “Looking Back,” is a jazz reinterpretation of classic rock and soul hits from the 1960s and ‘70s.

Saratoga Casino Receives Pennsylvania Gaming License Ahead of Planned Casino Opening SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Casino Holdings LLC (SCH) announced on Dec. 22 that it was granted a gaming license by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

In March 2025, SCH announced that it had signed a framework agreement to develop and manage a Category 4 casino to open near the Nittany Mall in State College, Pennsylvania. That casino, named Happy Valley, is currently being built and is scheduled to open sometime around spring of this year. The casino is expected to include slot machines, table games, a fullservice restaurant, and several quick-serve dining options.

“As a third-generation, family-run business with more than 80 years in the horse racing industry and 20 years in casino, hotel, and entertainment operations, we are extremely proud to receive our Pennsylvania gaming license,” said Sam Gerrity, CEO of SCH. “This milestone further expands our diversification within the gaming industry and reflects our long-standing commitment to operating bestin-class gaming facilities. Our strategy is centered on building strong relationships with our customers, team members, and the communities we serve.”

SCH now holds gaming licenses for non-tribal casinos

in four states, including New York, Mississippi, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. The company owns and operates the Saratoga Casino Hotel in Saratoga Springs; Saratoga Casino Black Hawk in Black Hawk, Colorado; and Magnolia Bluffs Casino Hotel in Natchez, Mississippi.

Combined, SCH properties include approximately 175,000 square feet of casino gaming space with over 2,100 slot machines, table games, a poker room, and a sportsbook. SCH also offers multiple entertainment options including restaurants and bars, a harness track, two hotels, over 6,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space, and a nightclub.

Siena Basketball Stars Visit Wesley Community SARATOGA SPRINGS — Members of the Siena University women’s basketball team visited the Wesley Community on Dec. 17 to “help spread joy this holiday season.” The players were accompanied by Head Coach Terry Primm and visited the senior living facility for an ice cream social event one day after the team’s final home game of 2025.

Skidmore Basketball: Thoroughbreds Fall in Holiday Classic Opener GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA — The Skidmore College men’s basketball team opened play at the Springhill Suites Guilford Holiday Classic with an 83-60 defeat to ConcordiaMoorhead on Dec. 29.

The Thoroughbreds (4-4) came out firing, scoring 40 points on an efficient 15-of-28 shooting in a high-scoring first half, but couldn’t sustain the production as the Cobbers (8-2) strung together a decisive 27-7 run midway in the second half to turn a back-andforth contest that featured eight lead changes and eight ties into a lopsided result.

2026 Track Schedule: 51 Days of Racing; Belmont Stakes and Belmont on Broadway to Return

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association (NYRA) recently announced that the Saratoga Race Course will host 51 days of thoroughbred racing in 2026, highlighted by the fiveday Belmont Stakes Festival and a 46-day summer meet that will include the July 4th Racing Festival, which was held at Saratoga for the first time in 2025.

“Each summer, Saratoga Race Course stands at the center of the racing world,” said David O’Rourke, NYRA President & CEO. “The 2026 season will be particularly special as we celebrate the final Saratoga edition of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and honor America’s 250th anniversary at one of the country’s most historic sporting venues. While Saratoga has served as the ideal temporary host for the Belmont Stakes and July 4th festivals, we look forward to returning to the traditional 40-day summer racing schedule at Saratoga in 2027.”

To allow for the uninterrupted construction of a new and re-imagined Belmont Park, Saratoga will host the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival for the

third and final time from June 3 through June 7. It will be highlighted by the 158th running of the Grade 1, $2 million Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets on June 6.

Following the conclusion of the Belmont at the Big A spring/ summer meet, the NYRA circuit will return to Saratoga for a 46-day summer meet to open with the July 4th Racing Festival from July 3, through July 5.

To accommodate the 2026 calendar, Saratoga will then host a series of four-day racing weeks, Thursday through Sunday, from July 9 through July 26, prior to the resumption of the five-day racing week beginning July 29. The 2026 summer meet will conclude with a sixday closing week from Sept. 2 through Labor Day, Sept. 7.

With the new Belmont Park to re-open in September for live racing, 2026 will mark the final year of adjustments to the customary racing schedule at Saratoga. This period of transition began in 2024 when NYRA held a four-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival in Saratoga for the first time. In 2025, NYRA expanded the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival to five days

and shifted the July 4th Racing Festival to the Spa, resulting in 49 days of live racing during the 2025 season.

In 2027, Belmont Park will once again host the Belmont Stakes and July 4th Racing Festivals, while Saratoga Race Course will revert to its traditional 40-day summer meet.

“We are excited to have one more opportunity to showcase our amazing community to the world by hosting the Belmont Stakes and July 4th Festivals,” said Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus. “To kick off the Belmont Festival, we will again host a Belmont on Broadway concert free for locals and visitors to our community, and the July 4th All American Celebration to add to the festivities at the track.

These two festivals helped drive up revenue at local hotels, restaurants, bars, stores and shops throughout the area in 2025, and the same will be true as our historic run hosting these events concludes in 2026.”

Saints Basketball: Kranicks Declared Girls and Boys “Permanently Ineligible” to Win Again Coach by USA Track & Field

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Just two days before Christmas, USA Track & Field (USATF) banned former Saratoga Springs High School girls running coaches Art and Linda Kranick, rendering them “permanently ineligible” to coach.

USATF listed its reasons for the ban as emotional and physical misconduct.

The decision was announced nearly two months after the death of Art Kranick.

Art and his wife Linda both officially retired from coaching in April.

The misconduct allegations against the Kranicks stem from a legal complaint filed in Oct. 2023. In that document, 1989 graduate Kristen (Gecewicz) Gunning said that the running program was “a toxic culture of control and abuse of middle and high school girls all in the name of winning.” 1999 graduate Lauren Hogan said that some aspects of the Kranick’s program “caused immense damage to me both mentally and physically.”

An updated version of the legal complaint also included more than a dozen witnesses who made various claims against the cross-country and track program. The claims spanned from the 1980s to 2022.

District, which rehired them even after the abusive coaching claims. Many runners, students, parents, and other members of the community also defended the Kranicks in the wake of the legal complaint.

In an interview with Saratoga TODAY in Aug. 2024, Superintendent Dr. Michael Patton said he did not have any concerns about the Kranicks.

“I’ve been here for seven years and have gotten to know the Kranicks very well,” Patton said.

He added that, at the time, the Kranicks had met all of the athletic department’s expectations.

In a statement released by the district following the Kranicks’ retirement, school officials said the running coaches’ “impact on our athletics and the larger realm of cross-country and track and field is unparalleled, and their departure marks the end of an extraordinary era in our school’s history.”

Following the USTA’s decision, Linda Kranick told The Daily Gazette that she intended to appeal the ruling. “This is an attempt by a few individuals to tarnish our reputation using lies,” she told the Schenectadybased newspaper.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Dec. 22, the Saratoga Central Catholic Lady Saints basketball team came out on top with a 62 to 52 win against the Hartford Tanagers. The victory improved Spa Catholic’s season record to 5-1. Sophia Ryan had a team-high 19 points, followed

by Addison Whitbeck’s 16.

Prior to their win against Hartford, the Lady Saints suffered their first loss of the season, 89 to 37, against Greenwich on Dec. 18. Ryan again had a team-high 19 points, while Whitbeck chipped in 7.

Meanwhile, Saratoga Catholic’s boys’ basketball squad fell to Greenwich, 58 to 44 on Dec. 19. For the Saints, David Redgrave netted 14 points and Thomas Zayac added 11. The team was 3-3 this season heading into their annual Christmas tournament.

On Dec. 29, they regained a winning record, defeating Cambridge 75 to 68. In that contest, four Saints finished with double-digit scoring, including Redgrave (21), Jasyn Thompson (16), Kihl Kelly (12), and Bryce Peterson (11).
