16th Annual H.O.P.E. Walk for the Animals

Please join the 2019 H.O.P.E. Walk for the Animals on Sunday, June 9 from 1-4 p.m. at High Rock Park located at High Rock Ave., Saratoga Springs Walk from High Rock Park to Broadway, then down to Congress Park and back to High Rock Park for contests, prizes, games and lots of fun for you and your dog .

All participants must register at hopeanimalrescue.org or at High Rock Park starting at 12:30 p.m. and must sign a waiver.

It is $25 to register but this is a fundraiser so please ask your friends to sponsor you and donate to help the animals. The walker with the most pledges donated will receive an awesome prize! Pledge forms and waivers will be available at hopeanimalrescue.org.

All registered walkers will get a photo, refreshments, and goodies for them and their dogs and will be able to participate in the following contests for fun prizes: Best wagging tail, best dog-owner lookalike, best dressed dog, best doggy smile, best trick, and more after the walk!

The after party is going to be great. There will be games and contests for kids and adults, vendors with lots of cool stuff, a Police K9 demo, an agility course with a trainer available so your dog can give it a try, a massage therapist to massage away your sore muscles, and dog yoga, reiki, and reflexology demos.

for Saratoga TODAY Honoring active members and retired veterans in all branches of the military, Saratoga Springs hosts the largest Elks Flag Day parade in the nation.

On Saturday, June 8 at 12 p.m. the 1½ hour procession begins on North Broadway and ends at Congress Park. There will be approximately 2,000 participants, including marching bands and C130 flyovers. Roohan Realty will be distributing approximately 5,000 flags for the public to take home.

Organized by the SaratogaWilton Elks Lodge #161 to honor the flag of our country, this parade has grown so large because they strive to honor local groups, as well. This year, they are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion.

CELEBRATE AMERICA When the Elks Flag Day parade first marched through the streets of Saratoga, the morale of the American people was at an all-time low, said the parade’s founder Robert Schrade.

“There was more than a little resistance. Veterans of the Vietnam War were treated terribly by the American people when they got home. It took a lot of courage to start up the parade but they did it because they wanted to turn around the overall atmosphere regarding patriotism on Flag Day,” said Elks Parade Committee Director Susan Waghorn.

To raise the $12,000 needed for the parade, the Elks hold fundraising events, sell raffle tickets, and petitions donations from members and corporate sponsors.

It’s a lot of work, but is all worth it when the day of the parade rolls around.

“The day of the event it’s extremely rewarding to march down Broadway and see the thousands of people that have lined the streets. It’s a lot of fun and very exciting. You see cheering as you go by and it gives everyone a chance to show how proud they are to be Americans,” she said.

Celebrating who we are as Americans and the veterans who helped to make the country into what it is today is why the Elks Exalted Ruler, Geraldine Conboy joined the organization and why they are reaching out to them again on July 7th with an event that offers food, clothing and free haircuts.

“Our hearts are really with the Veterans and supporting their needs,” she said.

Sue’s husband, David Waghorn, who has been with the Elks for 30 years, was selected as Old Timer of the Year and is the parade’s Grand Marshall.

“Even if it’s just for a moment, you have to understand why you’re there,” he said.

ROUSING PERFORMANCES The Avant Garde Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps will have 152 marchers in the parade. Playing “America” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, the best view of their performance will be at the reviewing stand set up in front of the Adelphi Hotel.

“The more applause you get, the more energetic you play,” said long-time member Jeff Perkins.

Don’t wait until the parade to hear their upbeat sound. Local high school jazz ensembles will be joining the Avant Guard players at the Elks Special Concert featuring the Grammy Award winning music of Chuck Mangione, Friday, June 7 at the Lake Avenue Elementary School Auditorium.

Chuck Mangione and his brother, Gap will also be in attendance.

“The audience will just love the groove and positiveness of this music,” said tuba player Richard Gathen.

for Saratoga TODAY Every life has its challenges, the decisions you make when faced with them makes all the difference.

“You can go crawl under a rock and be upset about it or you can go out and live your life to the fullest,” said Keith Koster.

A disciplined man, Koster has worked for the Xerox Corporation for 31 years, been married to his wife Cindy for 34, and by all appearances lived a simple life. Yet, just this week, he was recognized on the Assembly Floor by New York State Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner and was inducted into the New York State Veteran’s Hall of Fame by New York Senator Daphne Jordan.

Appearances can be deceiving.

PEAKS AND THE VALLEYS “If you didn’t know me, you wouldn’t know that I’m a threetime cancer survivor,” said Koster.

Koster’s thyroid cancer didn’t stop him from climbing the Adirondack’s 46 highest peaks three times. The last time, however, he did it a little differently.

From March 17, 2018 until March 17, 2019 he carried an American Legion flag to each summit.

“You can do a lot of different things, regardless of what you’ve been through. Everyone goes through their battles (whatever they might be) and comes out better at the other end.”

Koster served six years as Petty Officer 1st Class in the Navy, and has been very active in the local American Legion Adirondack Post 70.

“It’s been a growing passion over the years,” he said.

He is encouraged by the Legion’s advocacy for non-medical treatments of PTSD in Veterans and their children’s programs, which include oratorical contests, participation with scout troop events, and athletic teams.

“It opens up different avenues for veterans to get involved in. My fellow compadres and I are always in competition and have a rivalry that’s always a lot of fun - and we’re doing it for a good cause,” said Koster.

This summer, Koster is running in eleven 5K runs for charitable causes. His mission is to spread the word that these types of athletic activities can be

done with the whole family.

“You can do a lot of different things regardless of what you’ve been through. Everyone goes through their battles (whatever they might be) and comes out better at the other end,” he said.

It’s not always going to be smooth sailing, but Koster credits the military for teaching him the discipline to keep moving forward.

“You prioritize and you find time. It’s my dedication to these things that allows me to get it all in,” he said.

On June 9, Koster plans on competing in the 15th Annual Lake Placid Half Marathon and in July will be attempting the Wakely Dam Ultra, a 55K ultra marathon through the Adirondack Park wilderness. He is the Honorary Grand Marshall of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Flag Day Parade on June 8.

AMERICAN LEGION CELEBRATES 100 Years

trengthening the nation one person at a time, the American Legion was formed 100 years ago to help veterans, their families and to serve the community.

Each a Star Nationally, the Legion’s efforts resulted in the creation of the US Veteran’s Bureau, the forerunner of the Veteran’s Administration and in 1944, the GI Bill of Rights was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

This legislative achievement ushered in monumental changes for veterans.

Providing more opportunities for higher education and employment, it has had a long-lasting effect on the U.S. society and economy.

The Legion’s National Emergency Fund, established in 1969, helps disaster victims across the country and their Halloween Safety Program, started in 1972, is the only national program of its kind.

Throughout their history, the Legion has worked to protect the U.S. flag from physical desecration, as well.

Local History Saratoga County has 12 American Legion posts. Adirondack Post 70, currently located at 34 West Avenue in Saratoga Springs, is one of the original charter posts established at the very outset of the American Legion in 1919. Bill Schmeelcke, the Legion’s current 2nd Vice Commander, has collected a history of the local post, including research on its first Commander, Jesse Cavanaugh.

Jesse M. Cavanaugh was the first commander of Saratoga Springs' Adirondack Post 70 after the close of World War One. Cavanaugh, a Saratoga Springs native, joined Company “L”, 2nd Infantry, of the NY State National Guard as a Private on February 25, 1916, prior to the United States entering the War in the spring of 1917. He advanced to Corporal, then to Sergeant before receiving a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and being transferred to the 353rd Infantry Division in 1918. He served in France to the end of the war and returned to Saratoga Springs in 1919.

Unlike in other veteran’s organizations, the American Legion didn’t maintain the hierarchy of military service (filling the leadership positions with senior officers). They instead encouraged input from enlisted personnel and despite being the lowest ranking commissioned officer, Cavanaugh was Adirondack Post 70’s first Commander. Later on, Cavanaugh helped in the construction of the current Saratoga Springs Public Library, and was the first man ordained as a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Albany.

The post met at different locations through the years, including the current site of the City Center before moving into their current facility.

Their activities include fundraisers, community events and they will be marching in the Flag Day parade.

COURT Karl W. Kimball, 53, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced May 29 to 4 years in state prison and 15 years of post-release supervision, after pleading to attempted sexual abuse in the first-degree, in connection with an incident that occurred in Milton.

POLICE Benjamin M. Fedd, 40, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 29 with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the thirddegree/narcotic drug intent to sell, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the thirddegree, both felonies, following the execution of a search warrant at 18 Van Dam St. According to the Saratoga Springs Police Department, the search warrant resulted in the seizure of over 23 grams of cocaine. Fedd was arraigned and sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $12,000 cash, or $24,000 bond.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga’s Star Radio returns to the area to offer a variety of music and relevant information to listeners living in the Saratoga County region. In May of 2019 Border Media, LLC and A&J Radio LLC formed a partnership called Saratoga Radio LLC which purchased WSSV-AM, 1160AM, licensed to Mechanicville, and 93.3FM, a new FM translator signal licensed to Saratoga Springs.

“The motivation behind this purchase was the desire to bring local radio back to Saratoga Springs,” said Ricki Lee, owner of Saratoga’s Star Radio.

Locally owned and operated, Saratoga’s Star Radio will offer a mix of music from the 70s to 90s with a sprinkle of songs from other eras. The target will be an adult contemporary audience age 35+. The station will connect Saratoga area listeners with news

and weather, as well as everything that happens in the community they live in.

Fran Dingeman, former General Manager of Star 101.3 FM and a three station AM cluster including 1160am, worked for Anastos Media Group followed by Empire Broadcasting Corporation.

Fran has been hired as the new General Manager of Saratoga’s Star Radio to help build the

station and drive it forward. Fran is the current owner of Network Saratoga, an event development, marketing and promotions company responsible for well known Saratoga events such as the Longfellows Wedding Show, Saratoga International Flavorfeast, and Black Friday Saratoga. Fran has sixteen years of experience in the radio business and is a 26-year resident of Saratoga Springs.

Joshua Daily America’s Victory Began Here: The Saratoga Surrender Awarded Scholarship Site Construction Begins SARATOGA — On May 13 construction began on the Saratoga Surrender Site Project; one of American’s most iconic and important historic sites. Located a half mile below the Village of Schuylerville on NYS Route 4, this new park will feature a memorial wall with a large bronze bias relief of the famous image “The Surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga” and other features.

The Friends of Saratoga Battlefield, a non-profit 501C-3 educational organization, is working with several partners to make public access to this historic site a reality, worthy of those veterans who died and suffered for the freedoms we enjoy today. The scholarship Daily was awarded will aid Joshua in his pursuit of a Master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in business analytics.

Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation has awarded more than $120,000 in scholarships

to residents living in residences owned and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities.

The academic scholarships were awarded to high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students attending accredited educational or technical institutions.

The majority of the scholarships were granted to students of military families living in military homes owned by Balfour Beatty Communities throughout the United States.

Schuylerville Segment of State-Wide 750-Mile Trail Dedicated Overview of the Empire State Trail.

SCHUYLERVILLE — A few yards from a spot marking the Surrender Tree – said to be where British troops laid down their arms following the battles of Saratoga in 1777 – area business and political leaders gathered for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the Schuylerville and Hudson Crossing park portion of the Empire State Trail.

The 1.2-mile segment is approximately eight feet wide and cost $205,000 to develop. It is one of more than 60 construction projects across the state that began

in 2017 as part of the Empire State Trail. When completed by the end of 2020, the bike and pedestrianfriendly trail will be a continuous 750-mile route which will span the state from New York City to Canada and Buffalo to Albany, creating the longest multi-use state trail in the nation.

In his January 2017 State of the State address and Executive Budget proposal, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Empire State Trail initiative.

Approximately 400 miles of the trail had already existed in discrete, disconnected segments.

The 2017- 18 state budget, enacted in April 2017, provides $200 million to fund the construction of the trail.

Saratoga Hospital: Morgan Street Lot Ideal Expansion Site The following is a statement from Saratoga Hospital.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — As Saratoga Hospital eyes a much-needed expansion, one site stands out as the obvious choice for a medical office center—the last piece of undeveloped land adjacent to hospital property.

Proximity is a key criterion.

The project would bring members of Saratoga Hospital Medical Group to a common location on Morgan Street, where they could more easily collaborate on patient care. Equally important, in an emergency, physicians could get to the hospital within minutes to consult or provide other critical services.

“We are the only hospital in a county that consistently ranks among the fastest growing in New York state, and we need more room to serve our community,” said Angelo Calbone, Saratoga Hospital President and CEO. “It would

be poor planning if the hospital failed to secure the only remaining property within walking distance of our main campus.”

A group of residents in the mixed-use neighborhood surrounding the hospital opposes the medical office center proposal. The neighbors point to other alternatives; however, the hospital says none are as fiscally or medically responsible a choice as the Morgan Street lot.

“We did not make this decision lightly. We did our due diligence and, over a period of several years, considered all options,” Calbone said. “By every measure, one parcel—the lot on Morgan Street, which abuts property we already own—stands out as the smart choice. It has become increasingly clear that if we do not take advantage of this opportunity, years from now both

the hospital and our community will regret that decision.”

Here are four alternatives suggested by the neighbors—and the reasons these options are not feasible, according to the hospital: Build the medical office center and a parking garage on hospitalowned land on Myrtle Street. The need for a parking garage would add $10 million to $15 million to the projected costs for developing the medical office center. That is money that would be far better spent on patient care, staffing, technology and other potentially lifesaving programs and services.

The projected cost of this parking structure accounts for current staff and visitor parking that would be displaced by the building, plus the parking required for the staff and patients of the new medical offices, for a total of up to 800 cars. In addition, during

construction of a parking garage, staff and visitors would be forced to find alternative parking close to the hospital – every day, 24 hours a day.

“Build up, not out” by adding floors to the hospital. Space on the hospital campus is limited and must be reserved for inpatient care and other services that can best be provided in a hospital setting.

Build on top of hospitalowned offices at 59D Myrtle Street. This property is subject to height restrictions because it is near the hospital helipad and under the designated flight path of the emergency LifeNet helicopter.

are considering 18 changes to the Saratoga Springs zoning map to align it with the city’s Comprehensive Plan, as required by state law. “The Comprehensive Plan Committee and previous Planning Board and City Council have supported this change and recognized its positive impact on healthcare in the Saratoga region,” Calbone said. “Individuals and organizations throughout the region have also expressed their support. We are counting on city officials to do the same so we can put this property to the best possible use for our community— now and in the years to come.”

Code Blue Eyes New Home continued from front page...

A temporary emergency shelter was launched that Christmas Eve at St. Peter’s Parish Center. Since that time, a series of temporary winter shelters have been sited at a variety of venues across town. From the west-of Broadway Salvation Army building, to the east-of Broadway Soul Saving Station Church, each move faced push-back from some residents who lived in the community where the shelter planned to relocate. Each group expressed a desire for a shelter to be sited, followed with the caveat: just not here.

Soul Saving Station church on Henry Street has hosted a temporary Code Blue shelter the past three years but soon will repurpose the space where the temporary shelter operated, making it not a viable winter option for Code Blue. Enter Presbyterian New England Congregational Church.

“We are talking about a partnership with Shelters of Saratoga to turn our Nolan House – which is our big, Victorian brick house - into Code Blue,” said Rev. Kate Forer, a Massachusetts native who became Senior Pastor

at Presbyterian New England Congregational Church in 2016.

“We had a meeting with our congregation this past weekend to introduce the idea to them. And we also had a meeting with our neighbors to introduce the idea to them as well. “ A permanent shelter location was thought to be found in 2017 on Walworth Street, where a Code Blue structure would be built on property belonging to Shelters of Saratoga – the organization who operates the Code Blue program.

Local business owner Ed Mitzen, and his wife Lisa announced they would pay the costs for the new, permanent shelter to be built.

In September 2018, however, following a lawsuit filed by local residents challenging the proposed shelter, expansion as not being in accordance with zoning regulation, a Saratoga County Supreme Court judge nullified previously granted approvals by the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board which would have allowed the shelter to be built.

Meanwhile, the need for a shelter is strong. Since opening in the 2013-14 winter season and through 2017-18 – the latest figures available, the number of

those seeking shelter has increased each year. During the 2017-18 winter season, Code Blue was open 162 nights, served more than 8,000 meals, and provided sleeping quarters for a total of 6,480 overnight stays – or on average, 40 nightly guests. Presbyterian New England Congregational Church or PNECC - was also open during 90 of those nights to care for “overflow” guests.

“The congregation is open to the idea – this is part of the core mission of who we are as a church,” says Rev. Forer. “For over 40 years, our mission has been about serving vulnerable populations.

Our mission statement is that we are working to make God’s love and justice real in our world,” the pastor said. “This homeless population is already here on our campus and Code Blue does not have a place to go for the 20192020 season. We feel it is our duty and obligation to care for our brothers and sisters and to care for them with the necessary services to – not only survive - but to thrive.”

An executive order issued in 2017, Gov. Andrew Cuomo directs emergency shelters to operate when temperatures drop below 32 degrees. Code Blue’s temporarily housing at the Soul Saving Station Church often found the 41-bed shelter at full capacity.

Any alterations required to site an emergency shelter at PNECC would be minimal. “The soup kitchen is right next door, so we wouldn’t need a kitchen,” said Karen Gregory, executive director of Shelters of Saratoga.

showers – but there would be very limited changes.”

The organization anticipates the facility will house 55 beds, which would likely eliminate the need for an off-site overflow emergency center.

“We’re having the conversation. Can this happen at the church? What does it look like, and how do we involve the community members in the conversation?” Gregory says. “We still have lots of steps and lots of conversations (to have) about it.” A preliminary schedule of future meetings is expected to be completed next week.

“We’re still in the talking phase, but I am reaching out to every member of the community, every member of the county, every member in the city in their government positions and saying: please come to the table, have a

conversation with us and help us to find a permanent solution for Code Blue,” Gregory said. “It’s desperately needed and there’s a governor’s mandate directing the county do that, but I need the county’s support in order to really move that program and that project forward. There needs to be a collaboration.”

Earlier conversations to potentially site the shelter by Bethesda Episcopal Church on Washington Street didn’t pan out due to the shelter’s proposed location in the building - being on the fourth floor could create issues and obstacles, Gregory says - as well as the rent. “It’s not something we could financially endure and still keep our programming intact,” Gregory says. The Mitzens remain on board, Gregory added. “They are strongly supporting Code Blue and are staying on as donors and trying to help us find a solution.

They’ve been incredibly generous, kind and patient.”

Discussions regarding PNECC have stipulated that the church would continue to own the Nolan House building and SOS would run the Code Blue program. At some point, a permanent location will still need to be secured.

“I think we have to see how this goes, but I am totally open to a collaboration anywhere in Saratoga that would support this, and I will continue to work to follow the governor’s mandate,” Gregory said.

New Concept Vet Offers: 'Fear Free' Animal Care

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new veterinarian practice, now open in Saratoga Springs is utilizing a fairly new concept in the world of animal care called “fear free.” The fear free approach is similar to that of pediatric dentists, that focus on the patient’s comfort and experience from beginning to end.

“I wanted it to be kind of small, family-oriented, community-oriented, and have a personal touch. Where I worked previously was good in that it shaped what I wanted in a practice,” said Dr. Sara Ryan, owner and veterinarian at Spring Family Veterinary Hospital.

According to Ryan, fear free practice starts with the hospital design. This includes minimizing wait times and making adjustments to waiting rooms that are separated for cats and dogs.

or like that sixth sense sort of smell of dogs and other cats…

They don’t want to have a dog sticking their nose in the carrier if they’re in a crowded waiting room,” Ryan said. The separate waiting rooms offer natural light and use pheromones to help ease the animal’s anxiety. Pets can walk freely in their designated waiting room or be kept away from other animals.

Pet owners can also now be present when x-rays or other treatments are administered so the pet does not have to be away from the owner.

There is a certification and evaluation process in order to be a fear free veterinarian hospital, along with required continuing education.

Ryan says that the concept originated on the West coast of the United States; “probably in 10 to 15 years everybody will have the same idea but it’s kind of new for now,” said Ryan.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild has awarded college scholarships of $1,500 each to five Saratoga County high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in healthcare.

The recipients were selected for sharing the Guild’s dedication to education and community involvement. Three of the students have volunteered at Saratoga Hospital.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE: • Zeynep Cakmak, Shenendehowa High School, who will study biomedical engineering at Syracuse University.

• Jared Everleth, Schuylerville High School, who will major in biomedical sciences at Nazareth College in Rochester. His volunteer service included working with Saratoga Hospital Medical Group’s Dr. Rachid Daoui on a groundbreaking home hemodialysis project. Everleth also volunteered at Saratoga Hospital Foundation events.

• Shrutti Kannaathal, Shenendehowa High School, who will major in health sciences at Stony Brook University.

• Marcus Ortiz, Saratoga Springs High School, who will major in biology at Columbia University in New

York City. His volunteer experience included serving at the hospital’s Saratoga Community Health Center.

• Yuchen Wang, Saratoga Springs High School, received the Mary Jane Doyle Scholarship in memory of a much-beloved Guild member.

Wang will major in biology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. Her volunteer service included working at the hospital’s inpatient information desk.

Since 1990, Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild has awarded $225,000 in scholarships to help support the next generation of healthcare providers. The program was created by longtime Guild volunteer Yolanda Paolicelli. She has chaired the Scholarship Committee since its inception and overseen awards to more than 150 students.

The 2019 scholarships were announced last month at the Guild’s annual Scholarship and Recognition Dinner, which honors both the recipients and Guild volunteers. Each year Guild members donate 60,000 hours of service to the hospital and the community. The Guild also has provided millions of dollars to support Saratoga Hospital facilities, technology and programs.

Ballston Spa Students Receive Scholarships from BSTA BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Teachers’ Association (BSTA) recently awarded four $1,500 scholarships to graduating students Alexis Fuda, Emily Hogan, Julia Greco and Grace O’Connor. The awards are specifically given to students who plan to pursue a career in education or a related field.

BSTA President Kim Pusatere indicated that a total of 32 applications were submitted this year by members of the Class of 2019. The recipients who were selected are dedicated students who had taken full advantage of the available academic opportunities in the Ballston Spa High School and demonstrated extensive involvement within the Ballston Spa community. The students all plan to begin their college studies in the fall.

Ballston Spa Students Present SEFCU Penny Harvest Awards to Community Charities Students in the Ballston Spa Central School District have successfully donated $97,160 during the past eleven years to local non-profit organizations through participation in an annual Penny Harvest program.

This year, students collected over $7,400 in pennies during the

fall 2018 harvest. They recently donated the funds to six local non-profit organizations during the district’s annual SEFCU Penny Harvest Celebration that took place on School Pride Day. This year, 60 students were chosen as Penny Harvest leaders in their schools and

were responsible for researching local community issues and the non-profit organizations that address them. Members of the student roundtable in each school interviewed representatives from local organizations and discussed how their funds could be used to further support these non-profits.

The annual SEFCU Penny Harvest is implemented in grades K-12, in all six school buildings in the district, and has proven to be successful in educating students in service learning and financial literacy. This program teaches students about the importance of philanthropy and service as well as teaching math, communication, and team building skills.

Gordon Creek Elementary School students donated to two organizations, the Saratoga County Animal Shelter ($1,161.28) and St. Jude Children’s Hospital ($1,161.29).

The Malta Avenue Elementary School students also chose to donate to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter ($741.39) and St. Jude Children’s Hospital ($741.39). Smile Train received $1,000 from Milton Terrace

This program is made possible by the dedication of the Penny Harvest advisors in each school, including Jolene Hansen, Milton Terrace; Kimberly Moryl,

Gordon Creek; Anna Nickson, Wood Road; Matthew Nafus, Malta Avenue; Ryan Mazierski, Ballston Spa Middle School; and Rachel Jeffers from the Ballston Spa High School.

Through it, individuals who face economic hardship can receive $4 coupons to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs at participating farmers’ markets.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is among the many farmers’ markets taking part in the program. It also is among its strongest advocates.

“Many of our vendors are farmers with social consciences,”

says events coordinator Julia Howard. “They see their work of growing healthy foods as part of a larger vision to feed their communities. The FMNP helps make that goal more possible.”

The coupons come in books of five. They are distributed through such outlets as Saratoga County’s Office of the Aging as well as the state’s Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants and Children, or WIC. The county’s Office of the Aging will distribute coupons on site at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market at designated dates this summer.

Individuals over age 60 can request coupons, as well as younger persons who participate in WIC. The state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets describes the program as a means of promoting food security. It helps those who are economically distressed gain more access to healthy, locally grown fresh foods.

At the same time, it generates income for local farmers and supports farmers’ markets as community venues.

Using the coupons is simple.

At the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, participating vendors display signs at their stalls that indicate their acceptance of FMNP coupons.

Customers can redeem the coupons for fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms in $4 increments.

Farmers work with customers to maximize the coupons’ value.

For instance, a large basket of potatoes might cost $5. A customer can use a $4 coupon to buy the potatoes and add an additional dollar of cash, or request that the vendor reduce the amount of potatoes so that the price comes to $4. In a different scenario, a bunch of kale might cost $3. The vendor might add a little more to the bunch to equal $4 or add a separate item such as an apple.

The overall goal is to ensure that more people have access to local food.

• ¼ teaspoon black pepper • Small green cabbage* • Small red cabbage* • 1 cup shredded carrots* • ¼ cup minced celery • 2 Tablespoons parsley*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Using a food processor, shred green and red cabbage.

Then use the grater attachment to grate the carrots. Set cabbage and carrots aside.

2. Grate the onion. Scrape grated onion into a large bowl.

Add Greek yogurt and mayonnaise. Whisk to combine.

3. Add vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt, celery seed, and pepper.

Whisk to combine.

4. Add cabbage, carrots, celery, and parsley. Toss to coat.

Press B for Bacon

Here is a fantastic recipe for Bacon Lovers from the show “Bar Rescue.”

You can use a bamboo or metal skewer and cook it in or out doors. Enjoy!!

Bacon Meatloaf on a Stick INGREDIENTS • 1/4 vup BBQ sauce

• 1 pound sliced bacon (thin or original cut)

• 1/4 cup ketchup

• 1/2 cup cheese (I use triple-cheddar)

• 1 Tablespoon worcestershire sauce

• 1/2 cup crackers, crushed

With warmer weather, our menus tend to be lighter making some of the delicious salads that we tend to avoid during the winter months.

Both my wife and I love Cobb Salads made with diced tomatoes, avocado, chicken, cheese, diced egg, and crispy bacon or adding bacon to potato salads. Now close your eyes and remember the smell of bacon cooking in the morning.

Nothing like it! We love this aroma so much but many times it is not cooked correctly. A familiar problem with cooking bacon is the bacon curling up on you and not crisping evenly. This is where a bacon press comes in allowing you to flatten your bacon and cooking it to perfection. Bacon presses come in several shapes and styles; circular, rectangular, or shaped as a pig. The press is made of heavy cast iron construction with heat resistant wood handles. The

large surface allows for pressing multiple strips of bacon at once.

There are also various other uses for the bacon press. You can use it as a tortilla press by putting the dough ball between two sheets of plastic wrap and pressing down with the bacon press with all of your might. Then, cook the tortilla in the skillet. Or, you can use it to make a quesadilla by placing a heated bacon press on top of the tortilla to ensure even melting and browning.

Another use for the bacon press is turning your next sandwich into a Panini by heating a seasoned skillet and placing the press inside to heat up. After building your sandwich, place the sandwich into the heated skillet and under the heated press, pressing slightly leaving your sandwich golden brown. A bacon press can be used on the outdoor BBQ grill to quick cook burgers or steaks on both sides at the same time. Heat the press up on the grill before you begin cooking and place the press on top of the meat.

Crispy hash browns are delicious for both breakfast and as a side dish for entrees. Make crispy hash browns by placing 3 tbsp. of oil in a pan on medium heat, add the bacon press inside while the pan heats. Once the pan heats up toss your potatoes in and place the heated bacon press on top. Cook until the hash browns are golden brown. For desserts, use a bacon press on bar cookies pressing gently to flatten the bar cookie and crispy rice treats.

• 1/4 cup green pepper, chopped • 1/4 cup yellow onion, chopped

• 1/8 cup yellow mustard • 1 Tablespoon steak seasoning • 1 medium egg • Also needed: Hickory Wood

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine meat and spices, chopped onions, chopped pepper, crushed crackers, egg, BBQ sauce, worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and mustard, then hand mix until well blended.

2. Form mixture into 1/4 pound (or smaller) patties 3. Form the patties around the cheese then top each meat patty with cheese then fold bacon around cheese into a corn-dog shaped object. The bacon shrinks while cooking and helps hold the entire thing together. ITS LIKE A BACON HUG! Awwwwwwe.

4. Insert skewer in one end then wrap meat end to end with bacon.

6. Place in smoker or outside grill at 225 degress F for about three hours or until the bacon is done.

NOTE: If you do not want to use skewers or would prefer to cook in the oven - Roll parchment paper around the meat, tuck the ends under and transfer to a rimmed baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 160 degrees F on a meat thermometer.

7. Serve warm with dipping sauces like BBQ, ketchup or cheese to make this one a real winner! Mmmmmm…. food on a stick!

Weed Killers

As usual,

folks are complaining that their weed killer applications aren’t doing a very good job killing the weeds in their lawns. That makes sense since, until about now, it has been too cold and rainy for a weed killer to have any chance of working.

Dandelions, plantain and other lawn weeds are perennial plants that come up from a root system established the year before. Because they are coming up from roots and not seeds, they are immune to the effects of crabgrass preventer.

Chemical weed killers (liquid or granular) are basically plant

growth hormones that, when applied at the proper time, cause the weed to die from the shock that occurs when the weed tries to grow faster than it is able to. Sort of like an overdose of stimulants.

If weed killers are applied too early in the season it will not kill the weeds. Wait to apply Weed and Feed or liquid weed killer until nighttime temperatures are 45°-50°. The best time to apply weed killers in spring is late May through early June.

It is also important to remember that weed killer is absorbed ONLY through the leaves of the weeds.

Weed killers need to remain in contact with the leaves of the weeds for a minimum of 24 hours (48 is best) for the weed to absorb enough weed killer to be killed.

DO NOT water-in weed and feed or apply weed killer when rain is expected for a day or two after application.

Keep an eye on the weather. Even a quick shower is enough to wash the weed killer off the leaves rendering it ineffective The most effective weed killers are liquid sprays. Liquid weed killers are sprayed onto the leaves of the weeds in the lawn.

Since the weed killer is absorbed by the leaves of the weeds the same “no water for 24 hours after application” rule applies with them as well. Like granular “weed & feed” liquid weed killer should NOT be applied to a very dry lawn.

Recently a new, organic liquid weed killer has become available.

It is called “Fe Weed Killer” Fe

stands for Iron if you remember your periodic table. The iron in Fe weed killer is absorbed quickly through the leaves of the weeds. So quickly in fact that it is toxic to the weed and kills it. The grass around the weed doesn’t absorb the iron so quickly so it isn’t killed. It does absorb some Iron so it may turn a darker green for a week or so after application but that’s it. Fe weed

killer may take a little longer to work than the chemical weed killer but is proving to be more effective against tougher to kill lawn weeds like clover and Creeping Charlie.

Having an organic lawn weed killer is great news for us, our pets and the wildlife that visit your yard.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 9th Annual “Music & Mingling” event, to benefit the Saratoga Senior Center, was held May 30 at the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame. The Center is a non-profit organization that uses grants and fundraising to offset programming and support services for seniors.

Genealogy & Local History Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, June 15 at 1 p.m. at Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. Greg Veitch, a fifth generation Saratogian and recently retired Saratoga Springs Chief of Police, will speak about the darker side of early Spa history. Greg has spent years researching the history of Saratoga and he details the stories of gamblers, gangsters, crime and corruption from the founding of the village through prohibition.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College’s sixth annual Frances Day, a community open house, will be from 1 to 5 p.m.

Saturday, June 15. Visitors can experience art exhibitions, artmaking activities, food, music, and fun in honor of the museum’s namesake, Frances Young Tang ’61.

Highlighting this year’s Frances Day are events related to Streb, in which a gallery becomes a rehearsal room, a performance space, and an exhibition of the archive of cutting-edge work since Streb Extreme Action’s 1985 founding by choreographer Elizabeth Streb. Streb and dancers will give a talk and demonstration at 2 p.m., followed by 30-minute workshops at 2:30, 3 and 3:30 p.m. for the public (workshops limited to 25 participants, ages 5 and older; sign-ups begin at 1 p.m. in the museum).

BEEKMAN STREET ART FAIR SUNDAY JUNE 9 SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Sunday, June 9 the Arts District on Beekman, Inc. will host the 7th Annual Beekman Street Art Fair. The free, familyfriendly event will take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features over

50 Artists, all-day entertainment and CDTA Shuttle.

Artists will set up individual tents displaying fine art including painting, photography and lithographs and fine craft including pottery, jewelry,

woodworking, and textiles. The arts district on Beekman from Grand Ave. to West Circular will be closed to traffic allowing artists’ tents to line the streets.

CDTA will offer FREE shuttle service. Pick-up will be at Saratoga

Casino Hotel parking lot located at 342 Jefferson St. starting at 9 a.m. and running approximately every 10 minutes. Fair goers will be dropped at the entrance to the Beekman Street Art Fair at Beekman St. and Grand Ave.

Final shuttle returning to hotel parking lot will be at 5:10 p.m.

In addition to the selection of fine arts and crafts, there will be an opportunity to interact in the Arts Spark Community Mystery Mural Project. In this experience, participants of all ages are invited to join in the creation of a unique art project in which participants help create a mural of an iconic Saratoga location.

Other events include: a Maker Space Tent, hands-on activities presented by C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios and Sustainable Saratoga, and an Open Mic for Young Performers.

Saratoga Casino Hotel Announces $8 Million Capital Improvement Project featuring new Sports Bar

SARATOGA SPRINGS — An $8 million capital improvement project at Saratoga Casino Hotel will feature an allnew sports bar on the gaming floor, and a new VIP lounge.

Additional work includes an upgraded high-limit slot area, self-service beverage stations, as well as new carpet, finishes, lighting fixtures, upgraded sound system, and 50 multimedia screens throughout the casino.

Skip Carlson, vice president of external affairs at Saratoga Casino, called the upgrades “the most important project here in the last decade,” during a presser held at the casino May 30.

ON BEING STILL: Portraits by Joanne Savio

Balloon Festival

Choreographer, director, author and dancer Bill T. Jones, photographed by Joanne Savio, whose new exhibition, “On Being Still: Portraits by Joanne Savio,” opens at the National Museum of Dance on Friday, June 14.

Savio has captured some of the most influential dancers and choreographers of recent times, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Pina Bausch, and Elizabeth Streb in addition to several members of the Museum’s Hall of Fame.

Opening reception begins at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, or free for members.

The 19th annual Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival takes place Friday, June 7 – Sunday, June 9. Opening Ceremonies Friday will take place at the Cambridge Central School and other evening activities take place on Main Street, with a block party, a candlestick glow (on Broad Street) and fireworks to close the evening.

Not all Triple Crown Seasons are Created Equal...

Not all Triple Crown seasons are created equal. Some drag.

Most drag. Some are thrilling. See 2015. Some should feel thrilling, like 2018, but it didn’t. 2018 felt like somebody read “The 4-Hour Work Week” and life-hacked a Triple Crown.

Some Triple Crowns are exciting even when there’s a different winner in every race.

2007 ranks as one of the best of the early 21st century. Street Sense. Curlin. Rags to Riches.

Curlin ran in all three legs, as did Hard Spun.

Years that should have been a blast, see 2008 and 2012 were tempered by IEAH/Richard Dutrow and Doug O’Neill/ Paul Reddam. These couplings are, at times, unsavory. Such is horse racing.

Strangely, the Triple Crown this year isn’t thrilling, but it might be the most compelling renewal in over a decade. At least it’s weird. It’s definitely weird. That makes it better than most and it subverts the perennial concerns among almost all the horse racing punditry: this crop of three-yearolds isn’t the good.

This happens every year, right?

To recap: The Kentucky Derby saw Maximum Security, the best horse, the horse who finished first, the horse who was nearly an accessory to murder, disqualified and placed next to last. It gave Country House, the colt with the worst name in the history of Derby

winners, the garland of roses and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first Derby win.

The Preakness saw War of Will, a horse whose very life was threatened by Maximum Security in the Derby, go on to win the Preakness.

Luis Saez, the jockey aboard Maximum Security, was ludicrously suspended for his inability to control Maximum Security in the Derby.

At the start of the Preakness, Bodexpress threw his rider, John Velazquez, and proceeded to terrify people in the know and amuse all others as he ran the entirety of the Preakness relieved of 126 pounds.

There have been hilarious t-shirts made. I will buy one.

Bodexpress broke his maiden by winning over my heart.

I was on the phone talking to race caller Larry Collmus for unrelated story and I mused that what could we possibly expect in the Belmont Stakes, a quadruple dead-heat? I mean, really, what will happen? The race is already freaky based on the distance, 12 nasty furlongs, and the sheer size of the track.

With only nine horses entered (L) Tacitus, the third place finisher in the Derby, is the horse to beat. He comes in off five weeks rest. War of Will has run in every leg. Tacitus breezed a swift five furlongs in 1:00.42 over the main track.

Mott told the Blood-Horse, “He was moving very good, very level, and very even. He went along in :12s every furlong and went out strong enough. It was very similar to last week. Once he gets in his rhythm, he moves very nicely.”

That’s as nice as it comes.

When a horse can find a nice

rhythm over the giant plot of earth that is Belmont Park, that bodes well for making the best go of 1 ½ miles.

That makes him a terrifying horse and the one worth finding a way to beat on your tickets. I’m as thrilled as anyone to see how he performs.

But to circle back to the point of the Triple Crown as a whole, the key to maximum satisfaction lies not in the summation of the three chapters, but in the isolated movie event of each race.

It was said that when Christopher Nolan wrote and shot Batman Begins, he had the intention of making one movie.

Then, if lucky enough, he’d make a second. Then a third.

This line of thinking resonates with me. I think we tend to see the Triple Crown season as a failure and a missed opportunity if there’s no Triple Crown on the line. Fist bumps to trainer Mark Casse for saddling up War of Will in all three legs to give some semblance of continuity.

Each race is a Polaroid picture. A snapshot in time. It is a collective bummer when the Derby winner doesn’t run in the Preakness, but was the Preakness any less or more exciting without —ick— Country House? Sorry, I’d rather drink battery acid than say this horse’s name.

And so it is with the Belmont Stakes. We’ve got a few Derby runners. We’ve got two real classy colts meeting for the first time since early May. The class photo for the Belmont field might not stink of Hall of Famers, but we sure as hell will be in for a show, a world-class call from Collmus, and maybe, just maybe, a four-way dead heat.

Don’t rule it out.

SCHUYLERVILLE — Schuylerville’s varsity Lacrosse team’s midfielder Andrew Phillips values interpersonal bonds through sports.

Phillips dabbled in a few sports throughout middle school before his finite spring sport switch from baseball to lacrosse.

What prompted the switch? An opportunity to remain close to his friends who were all joining the lacrosse team that spring.

While he also plays soccer and basketball, lacrosse is by far his favorite sport as it is always fast paced.

"Especially when you're a midfielder you always have something to do,” said Phillips.

You're never gonna be caught just standing around on the field. The game is always changing, coming at you so fast; it's so exciting."

The excitement doesn’t go away off the field. Phillips can be referred to as the team’s “hype-man,” as he takes pride in often being the first one to get

visibly excited and energized before each game.

His abundance of energy and motivation comes from within as he is consciously mindful and a visual thinker.

“I just kind of picture myself having that one big play or that one big shot…picturing myself just going out there and just having fun; there's nothing better than that. I just really get into the game that way,” said Phillips.

Phillips is grateful to his parents for all their support from being his biggest fans to the time

"My dad ended up building my first net, which I have to this day.... My mom she used to drive me out to practices - I always had her for that."

His father is not only one of his biggest fans, but he is also Phillips’ biggest inspiration,

alongside his fellow teammate Justin Carte. Phillips sees both as fine examples of what it takes to be a high school athlete.

As the season came to an unfortunate end, with a loss to Briarcliff in the sub-regionals, Phillips will remember the fun time’s he’s had with his team as he continues to the college of Saint Rose.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Sunday, June 2 Congress Park was occupied for a day filled with activities for The Cantina Kids Fun Run. The Cantina Kids Fun Run, which began in 2008, is an athletic event for kids up to age 12. The funds raised make a difference for every pediatric patient treated at the Hospital. The Twelfth Annual Cantina Kids Fun Run raised $72,077 (net), bringing the lifetime event proceeds to $561,705! Additionally, there were 1,008 participants, surpassing last year’s record of 980.

• Meet At the Net: Develop your volleyball skills and learn rules and strategy at our summer clinic. This clinic will be held July 1-July 5 (no July 4) from 5:308:30 p.m. Everyone age 8-14 is welcome to attend.

• Drive For the Net: Join the Saratoga Springs Recreation Department’s Summer Basketball League.

The league will be held Mondays and Wednesdays July 8-August 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. Everyone in grades 4-8 is welcome to attend.

• Saratoga Miss Softball: The Saratoga Springs Recreation Department is teaming up Miss Softball this summer for it’s annual clinic. The clinic will be held July 8-12 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Everyone age 5-14 is welcome.

• Soccer Programs: Little Kickers, Big Kickers, and Soccer Leagues will run through June 22. NEW! The Adult Soccer League will be held Saturdays through June 22. Little Kickers is a parent/child activity that teaches soccer basics. Big Kickers reinforces skills and introduces participants to games. League play is separated into grade appropriate divisions. The Adult Soccer League is informal but will follow FIFA laws.

• Department Intro to Ice Skating Program: Learn ice skating basics or improve your skills with the Saratoga Springs Recreation Department. Everyone age 3-Adult is welcome.

BALLSTON SPA VARSITY BASEBALL PLAYERS RECOGNIZED AT DIVISION I AND II ATHLETE RECOGNITION CEREMONY BALLSTON SPA — Two of Ballston Spa Senior High School’s graduating athletes who were honored for their acceptance into Division I and II level college athletics were members of the Scotties varsity baseball team. Luke Gold will be attending Boston College and Jake Manderson will be attending George Mason University where both will continue to play baseball.
