Good Financial Advice is for More People Than You Think

we’re too busy or we feel that since it’s long-term planning, it can wait. The saying “time waits for no one” comes to mind with this thought process. It’s never too early nor too late to address this.

“I don’t have enough money to use a financial advisor.” We hear it all the time, but financial planning advice is not just for the wealthy. In fact, everyone can benefit from a solid financial plan, regardless of their income level or the amount saved. You don’t need to be a millionaire to seek out financial planning advice, and there are many options available to help you get started.

The basic premise of financial planning is to create a roadmap for your financial future, which includes setting goals, identifying risks and opportunities, and creating a plan of action to help you achieve your objectives. It’s about making the most of your income, managing your expenses, and building wealth over time. These are all tasks that sound easy, but many times it’s these priorities that we push to the side because

While some people may assume that financial planning advice is only for the wealthy, the truth is that there are many financial planners and advisors who work with clients of all income levels. Some financial planners offer services on a feefor-service basis, which means you pay for their time and expertise on an hourly or project basis. Others may work on a commission-based model, opting to earn revenue based on products or services purchased. Another option planners offer is to work on an advisory fee schedule, meaning they charge you based on the investment assets they manage. Typically, this type of advisor has a fiduciary relationship with their clients, meaning that they are legally obligated to act in their clients’ best interests. There’s never a one-size-fits-all approach, so you need to find an advisor that, first and foremost, you feel comfortable with, then one with whom you understand how they are compensated.

There are also many free resources available to help you get started with financial planning. For example, there are online calculators and budgeting tools that can help you get a better

understanding of your finances and create a budget that works for you. Online resources are readily accessible, but they do not take the place of talking with someone who looks to understand who you are and what’s important to you. While many of these resources can give you a broader idea of the financial planning process, a computer doesn’t prompt discussion nor offer advice.

Beginning the search process for a financial advisor can feel overwhelming. A good starting point is to read or listen to anything that the advisor is putting out there on social media or other channels. This allows you to get a sense of their communication style to see if it jives with your personality. Next, you want to have a conversation to see if there is a mutual fit. Ask them about the types of clients they typically deal with. If it doesn’t feel right, move on to the next. Not every client is a fit for our firm, and that’s ok! By working with a financial planner or using free resources available, you can take control of your finances and build a strong financial future. There’s no time like the present.

The Salvation Army of Saratoga Celebrates the 85th Anniversary of National Donut Day

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

This year marks the 85th anniversary and celebration of National Donut Day. Established in 1938 by The Salvation Army, National Donut Day is a reminder of the bravery of The “Donut Lassies” who joined soldiers’ on the front lines during World War I.

In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and fresh baked donuts. The sweet treat did more than raise spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives.

Today, The Salvation Army continues serving on the front lines of our local communities by providing a wide range of programs and services to vulnerable individuals and families in need.

On Friday, June 2, in honor of National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of Saratoga Springs has partnered with Dunkin Donuts and will be handing out free donuts at corner of Broadway and Church, right outside Adirondack Trust. For more information about National Donut Day or to download the Donut Lassies’ original recipe, visit easternusa.salvationarmy.org/ eastern-territory/donut-day.

The Village of Ballston Spa will be hosting the Fifth Annual Ballston Spa Birdhouse Festival in Wiswall Park and on Front Street from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11.

More than 1,000 birdhouses have been decorated by community members and from as far away as Albany and Vermont. These fantastic creations will hang throughout the retail district all summer, along with a 16-foot tall sculptural birdhouse in the center of Wiswall Park.

The Birdhouse Festival is the kick-off of Ballston Spa’s summer arts and entertainment season. The Birdhouse Festival is family-friendly with free crafts and games for children, music, entertainment, food and vendors. Miller’s BBQ will serve their delicious BBQ chicken and pulled pork meals to eat in or take out.

In addition, the Ballston Spa Fire Department will show off their new Heavy Rescue Fire Truck, and the Village Department of Public Works (DPW) will show off their recently purchased equipment.

A favorite activity at the yearly festival is selecting favorite birdhouses and artists searching for

their own works of art. Participants range in age from 4 to 94 years old and no two are alike.

“The Birdhouse Program is an incredible community-oriented program that’s unique to the Village of Ballston Spa”, says Mayor Frank Rossi, II. “It’s what makes Ballston Spa so special, to see people work together to make our Village come alive with color, artwork and community spirit”.

Mayor Rossi had the honor to select the 60 ‘Mayor’s Awards’ with Deputy Mayor/Trustee Bernadette VanDeinse and the Birdhouse Festival Chair, Mary Price-Bush. The Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. at the Birdhouse Festival.

“Working with the Mayor and Trustee VanDeinse to select 60 birdhouses for the ‘Mayor’s Award’ was wonderful. Everyone put their heart and soul into creating such amazing artwork,” said Mary Price-Bush. “We’d like to thank everyone for participating in this year’s program. I’m so proud to be a part of this community; everyone cares so much about making our Village a great place to live.” The Festival has a rain date of June 18. Drug Bust, Deputies Shot

BALLSTON

SPA

— Six minutes after sunrise Tuesday morning, members of the county Sheriff’s Office Special Operation and Narcotics Unit assisted the DEA in executing a federal search warrant at 312 Foxwood Drive. The warrant relating to a six-month long narcotics investigation.

“The Special Operations

team announced their purpose and authority and entered the residence,” explained Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo. “A person inside the home began shooting at deputies.”

The person inside, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Zaremski, was the subject of the investigation leading to the search warrant.

“He struck two deputies with gunfire, at which time deputies returned fire,” Zurlo said. “Mr.

Zaremski was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m. at Albany Medical Center.”

The two injured deputies, who Sheriff Zurlo declined to name, have served with the department for five years, and two years, respectively. One was struck in the chest with a round that was deflected by life-saving body armor; the other suffered a shattered femur as a result of a serious gunshot wound to his thigh, Zurlo said.

The prognosis for both is excellent, he added. “The quick thinking and instinctive actions be the members of the Special Operations Team in rendering aid to the deputies – including applying two tourniquets to the deputy shot in the thigh - was nothing short of heroic.”

A DEA officer, who is also a medic, applied first aid to Zaremski until he was transported to Albany Medical Center.

Zaremski had a lengthy criminal history record, Zurlo said, including attempted murder, and criminal drug and loaded firearm possession charges. “We encountered a dangerous subject this morning when we entered that residence.”

Tuesday’s actions were part of an ongoing criminal investigation dating back six months and involve four search warrants in the Saratoga/Albany region.

“The seizures that resulted from today’s operation resulted in hundreds of thousands of

fentanyl pills and ecstasy pills, multiple kilograms of cocaine and nearly 50 rifles and handguns,” said Frank Tarentino III, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division covering the State of New York. “The amount of Fentanyl pills we seized today is equivalent to roughly 60,000 lethal doses removed from the streets of this community.”

The tally of seized items is from the first three warrant searches. Any items seized from the fourth location – where the

shooting occurred Tuesday –are not included in that tally, Tarentino said.

Sheriff Zurlo said he would not comment whether anyone else was present inside the home, other than that no children were present.

“This is the first time I think, in the history of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, that we had two members shot,” Zurlo said, at a presser held in Ballston Spa Tuesday afternoon. “There are no words to sufficiently describe how grateful I am that this is only a press conference and not a eulogy.”

Memorial Day Ceremony at Saratoga Commemorates Those Who Have Served

continued from front page...

Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery is New York State’s sixth national veteran’s cemetery and the 116th in the National Cemetery Administration. There are currently over 26,000 interments, which began in July 1999, over its 350 acres, 90 acres of which have been developed.

Saturday’s ceremony will include Master Sgt. John Leavitt, U.S. Army retired Vietnam Veteran as Keynote Speaker. Special guests also include WWII Veteran Ken Bailey, and Korean War Veteran Paul O’Keefe.

The ceremony is open to the public.

“It starts at 11 and we ask you give yourself a little extra time to get here a bit early,” Lamb says. “It is a well-attended ceremony and usually 1,500-plus attend. It’s a beautiful ceremony and we’re supposed to have beautiful weather. If you’re looking for a very relaxing ceremony, to sit in a chair, listen to some songs and hear a few people speak and commemorate and remember our men and women who have faithfully served, it’s a great place to do it.”

The cemetery was renamed after the late Congressman Gerald Brooks Hunt Solomon, who advocated for the cemetery to be in Saratoga.

“It was originally going to be in the Utica-Rome area. Congressman Solomon advocated for it to be here, close to the Saratoga battlefield,” says Lamb, a Navy Veteran who served from 1990 to 1998. Solomon was buried at the cemetery Oct. 31, 2001. Three months later, President George W.

Bush signed legislation renaming Saratoga National Cemetery as the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

The ship’s bell from the USS Saratoga, CV-3, was installed as a memorial at the cemetery in 1999. The USS Saratoga was launched in 1925 and spent 20 years at sea, including action during World War II. An American gray granite memorial was erected in 2001 to honor veterans from Saratoga County. The American Veterans (AMVETS) donated a carillon in 1999, and a granite and bronze memorial was erected in honor of U.S. submariner veterans in 2002. The cemetery also has a walkway that features a variety of memorials erected by veterans and fraternal organizations in honor of events and fallen comrades.

More than 1.4 million veterans live in New York and more than 225,000 reside in the Albany/Saratoga area. Many of the questions the national cemetery in Saratoga is asked comes from veterans inquiring whether they are eligible for burial there.

“A lot of veterans don’t realize that they are eligible, along with their spouse, if married, and any dependent children. You don’t need to have served in war – you just have to have been honorably discharged and most folks don’t know that,” Lamb says. “There is some paperwork involved, and we encourage folks to look at that. I’m a veteran myself, and I did it to see how long it took. It was a very easy process, and I got an official letter back that basically says I’m deemed eligible for burial when the time comes.”

When a Veteran, service

member, or family member qualifies for burial in a VA national cemetery, they receive certain burial benefits at no cost to their family. “After you come through the cemetery everything is paid for by the governmentthat’s the opening and closing of the gravesite, the placing of the headstone or marker, the perpetual care, the maintenance – all paid for, for you and your spouse,” Lamb says.

The cemetery in Saratoga conducts approximately 1,300 interments a year and has space available to accommodate casketed

and cremated remains. Since 1999, the cemetery counts a total of about 26,000 interments and has ample space for expansion. Eligibility information for veterans may be found at: www.va.gov/ burials-memorials/eligibility.

Board of Ethics Advises Social Media Awareness for City Office Candidates

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

In February 2023, Mike Brandi, Chairman of the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee, filed a complaint with the Saratoga Springs Board of Ethics regarding posts to the official City Facebook page which he said promoted campaign pages of Mayor Ron Kim and Commissioner of Finance Minita Sanghvi.

The complaint alleged that the posts violated Section 13-3(k) of the Code of Ethics which states, among other things, that officers

or employees not use the City “workplace” to influence any person to participate in an election campaign or political event or to contribute to a political party, committee, campaign or candidate.

The City Board of Ethics returned a two-page response to Brandi’s inquiry on May 17 regarding the matter.

The Board, in a 4-0 ruling, said that as the City’s Ethics policy does apply to the City’s social media practices, and in finding a social media site officially created

by and maintained by the city as a “workplace,” that ”the Board must find that the postings did not comply with Section 13-3 (k).”

Additionally, the Board added: “In reaching its conclusions it finds no intent on the part of either Council member to act contrary to the Code. It will advise, however, that in the future all candidates for office have a responsibility to be aware of, and to instruct their campaign staff on, the requirements of Section 13-3(k).”

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Sixteen formal charges of misconduct have been filed against Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Joseph Dolan, according to city Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino.

With the filing of the charges, Chief Dolan’s employment status goes from paid administrative leave to suspension without pay, Montagnino said in a statement.

The 16 charges, the details of which were released May 23, include multiple allegations of Dolan’s attending training at the State Academy of Fire Sciences in Montour Falls, as well as providing training at the Saratoga County Fire Training Center Center, and at the Troy Fire Department for which he was paid by the state, while not charging “leave time,” and so also being paid full salary as city fire chief.

The charges also allege an intent to obtain personal benefit by using a city-owned vehicle for personal use.

“I don’t believe there’s anything here that would warrant the termination of the Chief’s employment,” said Dolan’s attorney, Brian Culnan. “Based on the facts as I understand them, it’s obvious to me that the city is really not aware of a lot of the facts here and has charged him with a lot of stuff in which there’s really no wrongdoing.”

Dolan’s response to the commissioner’s allegations is anticipated in early June.

B&B Plumbing & Heating Celebrates 25 Years of Business, May 18 Declared ‘B&B Plumbing Day’

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

B&B Plumbing and Heating celebrated a major milestone on Thursday, marking 25 years of business with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

B&B is a locally-owned plumbing, heating, and cooling company based in Saratoga Springs. Co-owner B.J. Kozlowski emphasized the company’s local roots, saying it is meaningful to be recognized by the community.

“The whole start of B&B was that a local company could serve a local town,” said Kozlowski. “I think we’re doing that, and it’s

being reflected in the people that showed up today.”

Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Finance Minita Sangvhi was in attendance, along with Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce vice president of communications Richard Snyder, and representatives from the offices of Senator Jim Tedisco and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner.

Members of the Bill Benton Foundation were also on hand. Benton was one of the founders of B&B, and passed away in 2021. The Bill Benton Foundation is a non-profit group founded in his memory to help individuals in the

trades with things such as tuition, tools, certifications, and licenses, according to their website.

Sangvhi spoke, introducing a proclamation from the city declaring May 18 to be ‘B&B Plumbing Day.’

“You’ve got a phenomenal crew, and you guys have been doing incredible work,” said Sanghvi. “This is really the key of our community, the small businesses, quality service that keeps our city and our community running and humming along. So we appreciate all

that you guys do here.”

B&B was founded in 1998 by Sonny Bonacio and Benton. Kozlowski joined the company in 2012, and today is a co-owner with Bonacio.

“This means a lot to me, a lot to Sonny, a lot to all of our employees,” said Kozlowski. “We’ve strived really hard to get here. … We’ve gone through some heartbreak in the past few years, but our goal is to hang in strong, and I think we’re doing that pretty well. This is a big milestone for us.”

Kozlowski said he began working in the industry at age 16, and his experience since has “gone beyond what I could ever imagine.”

“Joining a partnership with Sonny and Billy was just an incredible opportunity,” said Kozlowski. “This is all I’ve ever done, this is all I ever want to do. I love what I do everyday. That’s what’s going to help keep us here, I think.”

ADNET Technologies Accelerates Regional Growth Through Acquisition of Tech II

ALBANY — ADNET Technologies (ADNET), a managed IT services, cloud, and cybersecurity provider with offices in Rocky Hill, Connecticut and Albany, New York, announced it has acquired Tech II Business Services (Tech II), a Saratoga Springs-based managed IT firm. This strategic partnership brings together two teams of IT professionals to create a premier regional technology services company that combines national capabilities with a human-centered approach.

By joining forces, ADNET and Tech II will accelerate the combined company’s growth in New York’s Capital Region and across the Northeast, while also creating opportunities for their employees and clients.

“Our decision to bring Tech II into ADNET Technologies was inspired by the strength of Tech II’s talented team of technologists, technical staff and administrative support members,” said Christopher Luise, CEO of ADNET Technologies. “Attracting, developing and retaining technology talent is the lifeblood of managed IT services providers — enabling innovation, accelerating our growth and ensuring outstanding customer service. With this acquisition, we gain access to new talent and resources that will enable us to serve our current and future clients even better in the Capital Region and beyond.”

ADNET will retain all Tech II employees and will continue to actively recruit additional technology professionals, as it ramps up local growth efforts. Tech II CEO Daniel Bardin will join ADNET as General Manager, allowing him to bring expanded solutions to clients and grow the firm’s regional operations alongside current ADNET General Managers Ronald Gibson and Erin Peterson, Vice President Lynette Maffei and CEO Christopher Luise.

“We’re excited to unite the ADNET and Tech II teams. Together, we’ll bring national capabilities and local market understanding to help our clients implement technology solutions

that drive business outcomes,” Bardin said. “Tech II’s clients will continue to be served by the same outstanding IT professionals while securing access to ADNET’s extensive network of resources and partners. Joining ADNET also provides our team with access to new pathways to opportunities for professional development and growth. The potential is immense for us as we bridge together our two firms.”

“This acquisition deepens ADNET’s investment into the Capital Region, a market we see as full of opportunity and talent,” Luise said. “We’re confident that doublingdown on our investment here will continue to drive our growth locally and across the northeast.”

GREENFIELD Summer Camp

Greenfield Summer Day Camp Simply Focuses on Kids Just Being Kids in the Great Outdoors

In today’s over-structured world where kids spend a big part of their days looking at electronics, the one thing most grade school parents agree on is when school is out, they want their kids out… in the great outdoors. When summer comes, the pressure is on for parents to adequately entertain them without overscheduling or breaking the bank. The Town of Greenfield’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional activities that promise to leave children exhausted and happy.

Campers spend 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Middle School, at 515 Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as obstacle courses, hiking, Taekwondo, arts and crafts, as well as many organized games and sports like soccer, flag football, kickball and more. Campers participate in themed days like “Super Hero” and “Hat” Day and painting, tie-dying and rock climbing. They receive weekly visits from Uncharted Wild LLC to encounter live wild animals, regularly scheduled “Water Days” for splashing around and even the chance to pal around with some local llamas. Rainy day activities bring the children inside to the school’s gymnasium

and cafeteria. Fridays end each week on a sweet note with treats from ice cream trucks and Stewart’s Shops.

“Our ever-changing schedule will send kids home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at camp with friends,” said Town of Greenfield Recreation Director Rebecca Sewell.

Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 25 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves. Parents can choose early drop off for an additional cost and all students are eligible for the town’s Free Lunch Program, daily on-site and during camp. Signups open in March to Town of Greenfield residents, and in April open to the public. More information can be found by calling Rebecca Sewell at 518-428-2267 or visiting www.greenfieldny.org. Knowledge Matters Campaign Visits SSCSD

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Springs City School District hosted the Knowledge Matters Campaign on May 16 and 17, allowing members of the campaign to view the district’s literacy work with the American Reading Company.

Members of the Knowledge Matters campaign sat in on classes, and held roundtable discussions with both teachers and students about the impacts of the district’s new ELA curriculum, ARC Core.

The district adopted the ARC Core curriculum at the K-2 level prior to the 2021-22 school year, and has begun to see the impacts.

Dr. Michele Whitley, the district’s Director of K-12 Humanities and Elementary Instruction, said a committee of roughly 50 people chose the curriculum after reviewing elementary literacy programs under their curriculum renewal cycle.

“They selected American Reading Company because it is a program that builds knowledge

in students, along with engaging them in learning reading and writing,” said Whitley. “Our teachers are very focused on skillbuilding, and teaching children how to read. But this particular program also came with a plethora of resources to help engage children as readers.”

Barbara Davidson, executive director of the Knowledge Matters Campaign, said that the idea of the campaign is to advocate for “restoring content into the elementary curriculum in particular.” Campaign members travel to school districts across the country to showcase schools that embrace “strong, knowledgebuilding criteria.”

Davidson said in past years, curriculums have focused on reading comprehension skills, such as comparing and contrasting, and inference. However, she said these skills “can’t really be taught in isolation.”

“What we know now is that it’s really so much more important the knowledge students bring

to the reading,” said Davidson. “So if they encounter a word that’s unfamiliar to them, they may be able to learn to sound it out, and that’s important. You need good curriculum that’s teaching them how to do that. But also, they need to be able to make meaning out of those words. That takes them knowing about the natural and social world.”

Whitley said that the district is seeing reader engagement and students’ writing skills increase, saying, “We’re really proud of the work teachers have been doing.”

“As we’re in the second year of the implementation of it, we’re seeing our students’ love of reading, and reader engagement, soar,” Whitley said. “Their writing skills have really blossomed, and their stamina has increased greatly.”

Dr. Lisa Cutting, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, said the curriculum provides consistency across the district’s six elementary schools.

“You want to be able to provide a consistent curriculum, so students know what to expect, and also so that the middle school knows what kids are coming in with, and what they have been exposed to,” said Cutting.

She also said that the program helps teachers better track the progress of their students.

“If you asked any one of those teachers, they could tell you the same thing about their

students,” Cutting added. “I can’t reinforce enough the availability of resources at their fingertips.”

Davidson said the amount of student engagement stood out when observing classrooms, as well as the instruction from teachers.

“I’ve seen some pretty amazing instruction,” said Davidson. “There’s not a classroom that we’ve walked in, whether we’ve stayed for an hour and watched a whole lesson, or whether we popped in for 15 minutes, where the kids haven’t been so on fire with what they’re learning. … You saw 100 percent of these kids involved in the lesson.”

She said allowing the teachers to simply focus on delivering

the curriculum, rather than also having to develop it, allows teachers to deliver higher-quality lessons and instruction.

“Back in the day, we asked teachers to write these lessons themselves,” Davidson said. “Come up with this curriculum, figure out the texts, figure out the topics, figure out how it is you’re going to go about delivering it. Now, we’re saying, ‘No, let people whose job it is to do that develop that curriculum.’ You become a master at delivering it. That’s what we’ve seen here. They’ve just mastered it.”

Whitley noted it was great to hear the teachers’ feedback, saying they “have worked so hard to adjust to the new normal in school.”

“They’ve collectively worked hard to embrace this curriculum, and the change that they see in their students,” said Whitley. “That is hard work, so it’s so awesome to sit here and listen to their perspective.”

Cutting said that while a new curriculum was “a very, very big lift on top of the pandemic,” it has provided valuable support for students.

“I think it worked out very well to provide that support that they needed, and that push and that rekindling of the love of reading, and writing, expressing yourself, after the pandemic,” Cutting said.

“We want our children to be readers, learn how to read, love reading, but also build knowledge along the way,” said Whitley. “We know that there’s a knowledge gap in the nation, and we want to be addressing it through the work that we’re doing in our schools today.”

Saratoga Farmers’ Market Expands Compost Collection

Areyou a Saratoga Farmers’ Market regular who arrives each week with shopping bags as well as a can of kitchen scraps for our compost collection bin? If so, thank you! Thanks in part to you, we’re expanding our compost collection efforts.

SATURDAYS

9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

WEDNESDAYS 3 - 6 p.m.

The market has partnered with a Saratoga-based small business Loving Earth Compost, to create a “Scraps to Soil” project at its Wednesday market. Loving Earth owner Hope LaBonty provides a bin for collecting food scraps and other compostable items each week. This material will be taken to Loving Earth’s composting facility to be turned into soil. That soil will be bagged and returned to the market in late fall. The market will then make it available to all of you on a donation basis.

HOW DO I COMPOST?

Such soil is a perfect addition to backyard or container gardens, says LaBonty.

LaBonty grew up in western Massachusetts and is a member of the Wampanoag Tribe and has various ancestral European roots. Everyone in her family had gardens and believed in fostering connections between people, plants, and the earth. A desire to pursue those connections led LaBonty to the University of Maine to study ecology and environmental science and eventually to Upstate New York, where she has lived for about a decade with her family. She took over ownership of Loving Earth in March 2022. The compost collection business currently services more than 100

households in Saratoga.

LaBonty describes the exchange of scraps for soil as an act of reciprocity.

“A lot of people don’t have access to a lawn or backyard they feel comfortable composting in, but they still want to be part of this movement toward being more environmentally conscious,” she explains. “They want to be contributing to soil health and toward mitigating climate change, all of which can be done through composting.”

Compost is a valuable aspect of the regenerative agricultural methods used by many Saratoga Farmers Market vendors. I am one such vendor. My farm’s co-owner Jim Carlson has been transporting

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

compost brought to the market to our farm to generate topsoil. This year, the market’s pilot project with Loving Earth is part of my activities as SUNY Empire State University’s Turben Chair in Mentoring. As part of this work, Loving Earth will offer an informational table and one-hour workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on June 7 and an activity during the Wednesday market’s summer Power of Produce Club for children on July 17 to teach children and families about the benefits of composting.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open on Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga. Find us online at www.saratogafarmersmarket. org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ SaratogaFarmersMarket.

Composting is an activity you can do at home. It’s great for engaging kids and helping them understand the food and soil cycle. You don’t need a lot of space and when done right, there will be no offensive odors.

Composting is a lot like cooking. The 4 magic ingredients for successful compost are: “greens,” “browns,” air and water. One popular method is called “lasagna composting” where you create alternating layers of “greens’’ (food scraps, green plant trimmings) and at least twice as many “browns” (carbonrich material like wood-chips, dried- leaves, and straw) in a confined space like a 3 foot x 3 foot bin. Add air by stirring it occasionally with a stick or turning it with a pitchfork. Add some water to keep the pile moist. Keep it covered to retain moisture and heat from microbe activity. Mother Nature does the rest - your compost should be ready in 3-6 months, depending on the season.

WHOSE TURN IS IT TO WASH THE DISHES?

Hello my Foodie Friends!

GINA MAE’S BAKED BEANS

INGREDIENTS

• 3 bacon slices

• 1 pound 85% lean ground beef

This is Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate so we can have our outdoor picnics to celebrate the holiday. I am so happy to see the sun and the warmer temperatures. The season between Memorial Day and Labor Day brings the opportunity to host many outside events. Having a picnic with family and friends on a beautiful day can be a time that creates those unforgettable moments and memories that last a lifetime.

Each week we write about the fun of creating and cooking fabulous dishes. However, with making these dishes comes the mess and dreaded task of cleaning up which becomes someone’s responsibility. Many conflicts occur within a household on whose turn it is to wash the dishes. I remember in my childhood, years fighting with my four other siblings on who would be assigned the chore of doing the dishes. Having grown up in a household with five children, my mother ran a tight ship and made sure all of us were assigned cleaning duties. Fighting over who was going to wash the dishes was a common occurrence even after my mother made it clear whose job it was that evening. Through the years we learned that washing the dishes did not take that long when each of us helped out. When we shared and helped each other in our household chores, we then had plenty of time to go and do what we wanted afterwards. While doing chores and playing together, we became good friends; a friendship that still holds today.

“You know you’re an adult when you get excited when there is a new sponge in the sink.” Author

Unknown. To this day, believe it or not, I enjoy washing dishes. I love bringing home new types of items to help me with this chore. One of our favorite items we carry is the Jetz-Scrubz cleaning sponge. This sponge will not scratch even the finest surfaces. They can last for several months and can be cleaned in the top tray of your dishwasher. The sponge has a foam side that holds suds longer and has a scratch-free scrubber side for pots and pans. Jetz-Scrubz is also made in the USA.

This Memorial Day weekend, whose ever job it is to wash the dishes and clean up, try out this really cool sponge! Come visit Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery Store located on 33 Railroad Place in Saratoga where we have Tools for Cooks! Have fun cooking and cleaning up. Remember my Foodie Friends, “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Spa Fine Art Announce Launch of the 2023 Travers Poster by Greg Montgomery

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Spa Fine Art this week announced the launch of the 2023 Travers poster by Greg Montgomery, “Glory Road.” The poster is available at Sopa Fine Art, located at 376 Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

“One of the most distinctive aspects of the historic Saratoga Race Course is its marvelous trees,” said Montgomery, in a statement. “Everywhere you look, beautiful trees shade the barns, the paddock and picnic areas. During the hot summer days of the meet the trees are a godsend for horses and race fans alike.”

This year’s poster leads to “Glory Road,” the tree-lined path that the horses take from the stables to the paddock - the perfect place to get up close to the magnificent thoroughbreds walking slowly through the dappled sunlight.

Annual Father’s Day Kids’

Fishing Derby to be held June 18

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The annual Father’s Day Kids’ Fishing Derby returns to Lake Lonely this year, offering a chance for fathers and their children to bond while competing for prizes.

Held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Father’s Day, June 18, the derby is free to attend, and is for children aged 14 and under, to be accompanied by an adult guardian. Free hot dogs, chips, and beverages will be served, and prizes will be awarded.

The derby is sponsored by a variety of local organizations and businesses, including the Saratoga Basspointers Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2586, Saratoga Springs Professional Firefighters Union No. 343, Saratoga Springs Recreation Department, SaratogaWilton Elks Lodge No. 161, D&D Marine Services, Saratoga Tackle, Wiggly Worm, and more.

It takes place rain or shine.”

The derby offers prizes for several categories: pike, sunfish, bass, and pickerel. Mintzer said prizes are given out by age group, with the three largest catches in each age group receiving a prize.

“It’s all catch and release, and we give prizes out for age groups for the first, second, and third-biggest fish,” Mintzer said. “We try to make sure as many kids walk away with something (as possible).”

Fathers and guardians are not allowed to fish, instead assisting their children. Mintzer said a majority of children who participate are between the ages of five and ten, saying, “They just get a thrill out of it.”

COLONIE — The Saratoga Springs varsity softball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday, falling 4-2 to top-seeded Colonie in the Section 2 Class AA semifinals.

The Blue Streaks, who were the defending Section 2 Class AA champions, earned the #5-seed in the sectional tournament after finishing 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the Suburban Council. Saratoga beat #4-seed Ballston Spa 1-0 in the Class AA quarterfinals on May 18, setting up a matchup with #1-seed Colonie.

The Raiders struck quickly on Tuesday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single by Gabby Baumann scored Jenny Shafer, with a sacrifice fly from Adrianna Laraway extending the lead to two runs.

Colonie added another run in the third, with Taylor Quinn leading off the inning with a double before stealing third and scoring on an error, making it 3-0.

The Blue Streaks wouldn’t go down easily, however. With two outs in the fourth, back-toback singles by Sarah Decker and Natalie Conroy put two runners on, and Nia Law drove home both

with a double to left field, cutting Colonie’s lead to 3-2.

Saratoga was unable to scratch another run across, however, and the Raiders responded with an RBI single by Katie Parisi in the sixth, scoring Shafer to extend the lead to 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Blue Streaks put the first two runners on base via an error and a walk, but Laraway, Colonie’s pitcher, retired the next three batters to seal a 4-2 victory for the Raiders.

Laraway threw a complete game, earning the win while allowing two earned runs on six hits. She struck out six batters and walked two. Offensively, Quinn was 1-3 with a double, while Parisi and Baumann had RBI singles. Shafer and Kora Juliano each added base hits, while Laraway also had an RBI.

For Saratoga, Jackie Cutting threw six innings, allowing four runs, all unearned. Cutting allowed five hits, striking out two batters with no walks allowed. At the plate, Law was 1-3 with a tworun double, while Decker, Conroy, Cutting, Olivia Tetreault, and Ava Goodman all recorded singles.

Stuart Mintzer, a co-founder of the Saratoga Basspointers Club, said the club began assisting the Fraternal Order of Eagles with running the derby, and currently helps with marketing, advertising, promotion, and running the event. Bruce Jones and John Huppuch are also co-founders of the Basspointers Club.

Mintzer said the derby seems to get “bigger and bigger” each year.

“I think the last year, we had over 100 people between parents and kids in attendance,” said Mintzer. “Maybe more (this year), but certainly close to that for sure.

Members of the Basspointers Club volunteer to help run the derby on Father’s Day. The derby also features appearances from the Saratoga Springs Fire Department, who bring a firetruck, and the Saratoga Springs Police Department, who bring their horseback team for photos and interaction with the children.

Mintzer also mentioned that the New York State Office of Environmental Conservation has been involved in recent years, promoting the philosophy of “fishing as a sport with conservation in mind.”

“Which is why we want to do catch and release and promote catch and release. Artificial bait rather than live bait,” Mintzer said. “We just love spreading the word about fishing and

conservation, and just how nice our local waters are.”

The derby offers a chance for a unique experience on Father’s Day, with Mintzer saying, “People are really looking for something different to do.”

“I mean, what better thing for a father to do than to take his kid fishing?” said Mintzer. “It kind of panned out that there’s more people than we thought that are looking for something like this. More and more came as we helped promote the event. It’s just become this event that we’re really proud to be a part of.”

The Father’s Day Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held June 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Lake Lonely, at 373 Crescent Ave in Saratoga Springs. For more information, call 518-587-3421.

Saratoga Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Section 2 Class A Title

SCHUYLERVILLE —

Carly Wise opened the scoring just seconds into the game, and the Saratoga Springs varsity girls’ lacrosse team never looked back en route to a 8-5 victory over Shaker in the Section 2 Class A Championship on Wednesday.

Wise scored three goals to lead the Blue Streaks, with Faith Britton scoring twice. Allie Shamberger had a goal and two assists, with Janie Baringer adding a goal and an assist. Emery Judge also scored a goal for Saratoga, while goaltender Jenna Amodio made 10 saves.

Shaker hung with Saratoga early on, tying the game at 2-2

with 16:41 left in the first half on a goal by Ava Scattareggia, but back-to-back Blue Streak goals by Britton gave Saratoga a 4-2 lead entering halftime.

Wise scored early in the second half to extend the lead to 5-2 before Emery Judge quickly followed with a goal of her own, giving Saratoga a 6-2 advantage.

Shaker was able to get within two goals, with tallies by Sarah Bette and Kacie Pilla cutting the lead to 6-4 with 14 minutes left, but the Blue Streaks held strong defensively before pulling away in the final minutes.

Wise scored her third goal with 6:11 left to extend the lead

to 7-4, and Shamberger followed with a goal to make it 8-4 with four minutes remaining. Lauren O’Hagan scored for Shaker with 1:03 left, but the Bison were unable to mount a rally further, with Saratoga sealing an 8-5 victory.

It is the first Section 2 title for Blue Streaks’ head coach Jennifer Furze, in her first season leading the varsity team, and the first for the Saratoga girls’ team since 2018.

Saratoga (14-5) will play the Section 1 Class A Champion in the NYSPHSAA Sub-Regionals at 7:30 p.m. on May 30 at Schuylerville High School.

22nd Annual 4-H Scholarship Golf Classic to be held June 3

BALLSTON SPA — On June 3, the 4-H Scholarship Golf Classic returns for a 22nd year, helping raise money for the Saratoga County 4-H Leaders Association to provide college scholarships and other opportunities to local students. The Association is seeking corporate sponsorship as well as foursomes to come out and play in the tournament.

Money raised at the tournament goes to the Saratoga County 4-H Leaders Association, which has granted 59 scholarships of $1,000 each to students within the county since the tournament began. The tournament raises roughly $10,000 each year, said Greg Stevens, the program leader at the 4-H Program

Fun And Games

of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County. Stevens also said the tournament helps raise money for things such as leadership trips and volunteer training. This year, the tournament hopes to double its goal.

These are integral parts of the 4-H program of 44 clubs within 4-H, 160 volunteers and over 600 youth. The Saratoga 4-H program is very active all across Saratoga County, not just in one community.

The 22nd annual tournament will be held at the Fairways of Halfmoon in Mechanicville. The Fairways of Halfmoon have “been a great partner” for the tournament. Stevens said the tournament

has enjoyed a strong community response, noting the generous support of the Golf Club.

Stevens also added that it is meaningful to see the strong response from participants and sponsors in the tournament each year.

“It makes me so proud and humbled that they feel we are a worthy cause to come out and support,” Stevens said. “We’re extremely happy, and we’re extremely grateful. Personally, as a 4-H Program Leader, I couldn’t be happier to have such a great fundraiser that is established year after year, still continues to grow today, and provides opportunities for our kids.”

In the second half, the Tigers stormed back. Cohoes opened the half with an 8-1 run, with three goals by Carli O’Hara and two by Quincy Hytko helping the Tigers take a 10-8 lead with 7:34 remaining. Schuylerville’s lone goal in the stretch was scored by Peyton Delisle.

Delisle scored her third goal of the game with just over two minutes left, cutting Cohoes’ lead to one. With 1:51 remaining, Koval forced a turnover in front and scored her fourth goal to tie the game, 10-10, sending the Class D title matchup into overtime.

With 20 seconds remaining in overtime, Koval spun around a defender and beat goaltender Hannah Bullock to win the game, giving the Black Horses their third consecutive Section 2 Class D Championship.

Koval had five goals and an assist to lead Schuylerville, while Delisle scored three goals. Star Pflieger scored twice, with Tavares adding a goal and an assist. Keegan Long made nine saves in goal for the Black Horses.

Schuylerville (13-6) will host the Section 1 Class D Champion in the NYSPHSAA Sub-Regionals on May 30 at 5:30 p.m. at Schuylerville High School.

A safe space to laugh, play and connect: SRYMCA Kicks-Off Intergenerational Wellness Capital Campaign

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Regional YMCA (SRYMCA) launched the public phase of their Capital Campaign on Friday, May 5, at their Saratoga Springs branch located on West Avenue. YMCA staff, members, major donors, volunteers and community partners gathered for a morning kick-off celebration, followed by a tour of the project’s construction site.

This project officially broke ground last June, and attendees of Friday’s public kickoff event were able to tour the construction site to envision a renewed, vibrant and connected intergenerational wellness hub. The Y’s expanded facilities will include a new Wellness Center, housing several spaces for weight training, group exercise classes, athletic training and chronic disease prevention programming.

A new Gymnasium will help accommodate the growing demand for pickleball leagues, summer day camp, youth sports and before and after school programming. The new space will also include a new Youth Adventure Center; an indoor play space with a Saratoga/horse racing theme. Parents may use this space for supervised play for children 6 weeks to 10 years, enabling more families to take advantage of the Y.

The idea to expand its services through a capital campaign developed last year when the Saratoga Regional Y and the

Saratoga Senior Center partnered up for the project’s first phase. The Senior Center, in need of a larger space to provide for its ever-growing senior population, will move onto the Saratoga Springs YMCA’s West Avenue campus into a new 14,500 squarefoot home. The campus’ new Shared Intergenerational Lobby will connect the Y and the Senior Center, creating a central meeting space for active older adults to easily access the valuable resources that both nonprofits offer.

To begin development on this capital project, a generous lead gift of $3M was donated last year by Bill and Susan Dake and Stewart’s Shops. The Charles R. Wood Foundation has also challenged the community and made a matching grant of $300,000 to support this endeavor. This grant’s purpose is to encourage local community

members to join their support of this capital project and uplift the YMCA’s mission to be a community space for all ages to build healthy minds, bodies and spirits. These private dollars have made a significant impact on the campaign; to date, the Saratoga Regional Y has raised 76% towards its $8.9M goal. Now, the Y is asking its community for support, and to consider donating towards the remaining $2M. Gifts of any amount make an impact and will help ensure that the YMCA will have the space and resources to answer the needs of the Saratoga and surrounding community for another 150 years.

To be a part of the Y’s transformation, please contact Scott Clark, CEO, at 518-583-9622, ext. 106 or at scott.clark@srymca.org, or visit srymca.org/main/capitalcampaign to learn more.

SCHUYLERVILLE GIRLS’ LACROSSE BEATS COHOES IN OT FOR SECTION 2 CLASS D TITLE

SCHUYLERVILLE

The Schuylerville varsity girls’ lacrosse team delivered on its home turf, capturing the Section 2 Class D Championship with an 11-10 overtime win over Cohoes on Wednesday.

It is the third consecutive Section 2 Class D title for the Black Horses. The game was a rematch of last season’s championship game, which Schuylerville won 18-4.

Schuylerville senior Macey Koval scored five goals in the game, tying the score with 1:51 remaining before netting the overtime winner.

Koval scored three goals in the first half, including the game’s first two goals, as the Black Horses jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Cohoes fought back, eventually cutting the lead to 5-2, but Schuylerville used Koval’s third goal, and a goal by Emily Tavares, to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.
