History OF SARATOGA Bacon Hill – Not Forgotten
by James Richmond | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com
“Why not Bacon Hill?” Within days of the Saratoga County History Center’s release of our first video in a new series, entitled “Forgotten Crossroads – Rock City Falls” in April 2022 two board members approached me with a suggestion for our next video. We had envisioned this multi- film project as a way for the History Center at Brookside Museum to bring attention to the many small hamlets within Saratoga County with a long history, but now largely by-passed by the economic and transportation revolution of the last 100 years. In a county dissected by the Adirondack Northway 60 years ago, and today mostly known for the shining resort of Saratoga Springs, and the sprouting housing developments of Clifton Park, Wilton and other growing towns, this series was meant to highlight those small communities long since forgotten.
Our first indication that these assumptions did not tell the whole story was during the filming of Rock City Falls. Yes, it had a long history, yes it no longer was the home of many large paper mills powered by the Kayaderosseras Creek gurgling through its center. No longer was there an electric railway to transport workers and the goods they produced to Ballston Spa and its connection to the larger outside world. But we soon realized that the hamlet was still a living, breathing crossroads. Residents still took pride in their community, its two churches and its volunteer firehouse. Local men and women still worked in the remaining mill, Cottrell Paper Company. The Manson Inn still attracted visitors for social events. Surprised by this vitality, we closed the film with a segment entitled “The Community Still Lives.”
But Bacon Hill? What was there about Bacon Hill that could possibly result in a similar uplifting ending? How could we produce a 20-minute video about these fields dotted with a few farms, one church and a blueberry patch? Well, my first impression was correct in one regard. It was indeed impossible to create a 20-minute video on Bacon Hill.
I should have suspected as much at our first meeting with a few residents in July 2022. Pat Peck, not even a resident of Bacon Hill but heir to the Peck family legacy, sent me a
list of Bacon Hill folks who might be interested in working on the project. She provided me with background on each one and who was related to whom. That was my first clue that this film would be different. We assembled in the King Brothers Dairy, the only retail establishment in Bacon Hill, a convenience store well known for its milk and ice cream. In walked several people, all of an age, but seemly excited to be part of this project. They brought scrapbooks, photo albums, pamphlets and brochures. That was my second clue.
The stories were my third clue. They had lots of stories. Unprompted by myself they excitedly related their stories to me, a total stranger. As one of our interviewees later stated about another Bacon Hill icon since passed, “They knew everything about everybody.” And the stories, for the most part, were not gossipy tales of their neighbors. They were positive snapshots of the people and families of Bacon Hill, drawing from their memories to recall events in their own lives and those of their relatives and friends, sometimes going back generations.
I was elated by that first visit, but something told me not to get “over my skis.” Oral narratives by people long enjoying the retirement life are great, but was there more to the community? Would the next generation, many in their 50’s immersed in their work, want to share their own stories with this amateur film director and our videographer, Dave Waite? Would they be willing to carve out some time from their busy schedule to contribute to this small locally- produced video? After all, time is money, you know.
When we discovered that the answer to these questions was a resounding yes, we knew we had something. They were gracious and outgoing, eager to talk of their success and challenges, but also proud of their heritage and their families. As one might imagine if you know anything about Bacon Hill, we interviewed several Pecks and Kings. The Peck family first arrived in Bacon Hill in 1836 and two of the largest farms – Welcome Stock and Clear Echo - are owned by 6th generation descendants of the original settler. One of the co-owners of Welcome Stock is Willard “Billy”
Peck, the current Northumberland Town Supervisor.
The Kings are relative newcomers, having only been in Bacon Hill for 120 years or so. They are well known for their commercial dairy operation and the aforesaid Kings Dairy store. Edgar King, recently deceased, was also a town supervisor and led the communities’ farms first movement in the 1990s. His sons Jeff and Jan currently own both the dairy and Kings-Ransom farm.
Of course, there are people in Bacon Hill not named Peck or King. Jen Thomas of Thomas Poultry and Brian Carmer of StoneBridge Iron and Steel each had a story to tell. All of our interviews were unique but common themes emerged. Proud of their accomplishments, all were quick to give credit to the hard work and innovation of past generations. And all were genuinely excited about the future.
We also interviewed Byron Winney, owner of the Winney Blueberry Farm who sadly passed away soon after we had the good fortune to talk with him. The Bacon Hill Reformed Church is the center of the community, both literally and figuratively. Pastor Jan Vincent and church member Nancy Purinton related their 200 yearlong history and spoke of their vision for the future.
One final surprise awaited us. Impressed by the response of leaders of the middle generation, what could we expect from their sons and daughters? One hint came from one of our earliest interviews with Jeff King and his son Johnathan. A young man just graduated from Cornell, the college of choice for generations of Bacon Hill farmers, he was “all in” to embark on the career path of his parents and grandparents. In our last session we talked with Jan King, joined by his wife Pandora Davis, and teenagers Hannah and Nate. You may surmise the results but the best way to confirm your suspicions would be to attend one of the film’s premiere events.

TUSKEGEE AIRMAN: LOCAL VETERAN POSTHUMOUSLY HONORED
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
BALLSTON SPA — This week, The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors and the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency held its monthly Honor Deceased Veterans Program by honoring longtime Saratoga Springs resident and Tuskegee Airman Clarence Dart.
Dart flew 95 missions overseas during World War II. Twice, he survived being shot down by the enemy. He grew up during the Great Depression. As a child, his clothing came from the Salvation Army. Much of his food was grown in the family garden in Elmira. He built model airplanes as a child and had a yearning to fly.
The day after his 21st birthday, on Dec. 7, 1941, Dart was singing in his church choir when he heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor. The young man knew what he wanted to do. The following year, he was accepted into flight training at the Tuskegee Army Air Field, joining other young men who had enlisted to become America’s first black military airmen.
Dart served as a member of the 332nd Fighter Group and was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron in the 12th Air Force in North Africa. He was one of about 1,000 fighter pilots who painted the tails of their airplanes red, earning the nickname, “Red Tails.” They were trained as a segregated unit and forbidden to practice alongside their white counterparts.
Dart later flew P-51s escorting 15th Air Force bombers and was discharged from active duty at the rank of Captain in 1947. He went on to serve in the NY Air National Guard and retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
For his service Dart received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained during air combat, the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the WWII Victory Medal, and the American Defense Medal, the NYS Conspicuous Service Cross, and the NYS Conspicuous Service Star.
While he fought for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four freedoms, when Dart returned home from the war there was no heroic welcome, and no job that was available to him to fulfill his dream of being a commercial airplane pilot.
The accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen are credited with influencing President Harry Truman to officially desegregate the U.S. military in 1948. It was the same year Dart relocated to Saratoga Springs. He married his wife, Mildred, in June 1950 and the couple raised their family of seven daughters and two sons in
the Spa City.
After the war, Dart worked for General Electric Co. until his retirement in 1987, after which he began visiting schools and talking to students about his experiences in the war, explaining to them the importance of getting an education as a way of bettering themselves and creating opportunities. It was only after Dart began to speak about his wartime experiences at the request of neighborhood schools that his own children began to truly understand some of their father’s experiences.
It took more than 60 years for recognition to come for the
humble man from Elmira. In 2007, Dart was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, alongside other Tuskegee Airmen in the Capitol Rotunda, and in 2011 was honored locally at the Wesley Community senior housing facility where he resided at the time. Dart died in 2012. He was 91 and was buried with military honors at the family plot at Greenridge Cemetery on Lincoln Avenue.
Established in 1999 by the Saratoga County Board of
Supervisors, the Honor Deceased Veterans Program provides a way for county leadership and residents to show gratitude for the service of veterans past and present. The ceremony is dedicated to a different Saratoga County veteran each month. To date, more than 300 Saratoga County Veterans have been honored.

BALLSTON SPA — Hop City Maple is an up-and-coming sugarhouse that has transformed from a backyard hobby into a fully-fledged maple business. Located in Ballston Spa, Hop City Maple is owned and operated by John and Emilia Medick. The business began ten years ago when John and Emilia decided to tap some trees on their property.
That first winter, they tapped 19 trees and made a few gallons of syrup boiling over an open pan. From then they tapped more trees each winter using buckets for several years and sold their sap to a neighbor. As Emilia put it, “When my husband gets into something, it grows.”
Eventually they began making their own syrup and installed a mainline tubing and vacuum system to collect sap. Last year, they had 520 taps and now offer a variety of products like maple syrup available in three grades, bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, maple candies, maple cream, maple sugar, and honey.
Selling their products through a farmstand at the bottom of their road, online, and at a few local businesses, their products have been well received, as Emilia said that the business has “blown our expectations so far.”
This year the Medicks plan to tap 600-700 trees and they have set up some “DIY” pumps for
more efficiency in collection. Hop City Maple participated in NYS Maple Weekends for the first time last year welcoming many groups of people to the sugarhouse for tree tapping and boiling demonstrations, as well as treats like maple milk.
Hop City will be participating on both weekends again this year on March 18 & 19 and 25 & 26. At this year’s weekends Hop City Maple is teaming up with Dickinson’s Delight, a local food truck, to offer maple crepes and other maple goodies.
Their property was gifted to them after John’s mother passed away. As a way to honor her, they donate some of the proceeds of their business to the charities WellSpring and Mr. Mo Project.
Emilia and John are also grateful to the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association for welcoming them into the group and for their help in learning more about the science of maple syrup making.
To learn more about Hop City Maple, visit www.hopcitymaple.com or check out the Hop City Facebook page.
This year’s NYS Maple Weekends will be March 18-19 and 25-26. To find a producer near you to visit this maple season, check out the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association website at www.upperhudsonmaple.com/.

The Giving Circle
Honors Founders March 30; Raises Money To
Support Charity Work
Annual Yellow Ribbon Day Donation Drive Underway
BALLSTON SPA —
The sixth annual Yellow Ribbon Day Donation Drive to support the efforts of the Blue Star Mothers of America local chapter is underway.
SARATOGA SPRINGS —
The Giving Circle, a small, local charity that does big work in Saratoga Springs while also operating schools and medical clinics in rural Uganda, will honor founders Mark and Kelly Bertrand at a special gala at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 at Canfield Casino in Congress Park.
The Giving Circle’s annual Compassion Awards, chaired by Business for Good leaders Lisa and Ed Mitzen, will formally honor and recognize the Bertrands, who founded The Giving Circle after Hurricane Katrina and led the charity’s response to numerous
natural disasters in the United States before expanding its work to Uganda.
The Giving Circle’s current projects include aiding three families of Ukrainian refugees. In the past year, volunteers also performed yard cleanups and led holiday caroling through its partnership with the Saratoga Senior Center; served regular meals to the homeless near Congress Park; and sent skilled tradesmen to perform home repairs for the economically disadvantaged.
For more information about the March 30 “Celebrating Compassion” event, go to: thegivingcircle.org.
The collection of personal care and food items will run through April 6 and will be donated to the local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America, which will use the goods to put together “Freedom Boxes” and ship them to deployed military members who call the Capital Region home. The donation drive is held in conjunction with the annual celebration of New York State’s Yellow Ribbon Day, which takes place April 9 and is designated as a day to honor activeduty troops and their families.
Donations can include items like cookie and cracker snack packages, microwavable soup cups, fruit snacks, granola bars, and beef jerky, as well as personal care items such as insect repellent wipes, toothbrushes, body wash
(small), deodorant, lip balm, puzzle books, and more.
Donated goods can be dropped off at the following locations during regular business hours: Saratoga, Albany and Rensselaer County Clerk’s Offices; DMV locations in Saratoga and Rensselaer counties; Saratoga County Hannaford stores, and various town and village offices in Saratoga County (call to see if your local municipality has a collection box.)
Monetary donations are also accepted. As a reference, it costs $18 postage to send each “Freedom Box.” The cost to fill one box is about $32, so a $50 donation covers the cost of filling
and sending one box. Checks can be made payable to Blue Star Mothers of America-NY 2 and sent to PO Box 243, Delmar, NY 12054. Please write “In honor of Yellow Ribbon Day” in the memo section. To donate through PayPal, go to www.paypal.com/ fundraiser/hub and search “Blue Star Mothers of America-NY2”. All items collected will be presented to the Blue Star Mothers during a Yellow Ribbon Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, April 10, at the Veterans Memorial, 162 Route 236, Halfmoon. The public is welcome to attend, and donations also can be brought to this event.

St. Baldrick’s: Ballston Spa Mayor Leads by Example
March 2023 Notebook: Saratoga County Board of Supervisors
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
BALLSTON SPA —
The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, during its monthly meeting on March 21, proclaimed April as “Donate Life Month” in Saratoga County.
by Thomas Dimopoulos
Saratoga TODAY
BALLSTON SPA —
Cropped.
Trimmed. Sheared. Exposed.
Ballston Spa Mayor Frank Rossi kept his head up while sticking his neck out and after all was said and done raised about $15,000 to supporting research in finding cures for childhood cancers.
It was the first time the mayor took part in the event, an annual fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Rossi vowed to shave his head if 20 or more Ballston Spa Scotties athletes and coaches joined the drive. And so, they did.
“I was a little scared about it at first because it was the first time I ever shaved my head,” the mayor said, following the event held at the Saratoga City Tavern Saturday. The next day, the chill carrying wind made its presence felt upon
his exposed scalp. “I was feeling it on Sunday, but thankfully someone gave me a Scotties Lacrosse hat, so I was able to stay somewhat warm,” Rossi said with a laugh.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor-powered charity supporting research to find cures for childhood cancers and to help provide survivors long and healthy lives. Last year, the organization raised more than $20 million. Thus far, in the early months of 2023, nearly $11.5 million has been raised.
Rossi said he set an initial fundraising goal of $1,000 for his Mayor’s Team. About $15,000 was raised, Rossi said.
Would he return to the scene of the shears next year?
“I absolutely would do this again, and I’d like to see if we can get a little rivalry going with other schools to see who can raise the most,” Rossi said.
According to documents cited by the Board, 100,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants and 17 people die each day because the organ they need is not donated in time.
County employees are encouraged to wear blue and green, the official colors of Donate Life New York State, on the organization’s “Blue and Green Day”April 14, 2023.
In New York State, 3,396 transplants were performed in 2022. Approximately 8,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant in N.Y., with more than 1,100 waiting longer than five years. An estimated 500 New Yorkers die every year while waiting for an organ transplant, according to the county Board.

-The Board authorized the execution of an agreement with W.M. Schultz Construction, Inc. of Ballston Spa, for work relating to the upgrade of the Saratoga Springs pump station. That includes new piping, roof, pump rebuilds, and wet well and influent manhole rehabilitation at a cost of up to $4.148 million. The Board further resolved a services agreement with Dynamic Electrical Systems LLC of Glenville, for electrical work relating to the upgrade of the pump station at a cost of up to $619,000. Funding for the agreements will require an appropriation of $3.067 million from the Sewer Fund Balance.
Establishing An Updated Official Saratoga County Seal
-In 1968, the County established an Official Saratoga County Seal to depict the creation of the County in 1791. Last year, the County began developing a brand strategy to include the standardization of its visual identity across all departments and authorized an agreement with Trampoline Design to do so.
This week, the Board adopted a resolution regarding
the new seal. It will be filed with the County Clerk and with the Secretary of State of the State of New York.
The official seal of Saratoga County portrays the surrender of the Battle of Saratoga, depicting a three-quarter view of a field piece (trail end); Gen. Burgoyne surrendering his sword to General Gates in the presence of color-guard flying the American flag (13 bars and 13 stars-in-a circle) taking place under a tree. Background is composed of a squad of unarmed solders marching, and backdrop shows the mountain ranges to the east. A complete circle of tiny cannon balls rings the picture, and the words “Saratoga County 1791” appear outside the cannon balls and inside an endless rope circle completing the seal.

Saratoga Springs City Council: March 21
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS —
The city on March 21 awarded a $150,000 Mayor’s NonProfit grant to Pitney Meadows Community Farm for their investment in a solar infrastructure project.
The mayor’s non-profit grant committee received four proposals in all vying the grant, Pitney Meadows Farm, Cady Hill Cemetery, RISE, and the YMCA Senior Center, among them.
“They were all great proposals, very community minded,” city Mayor Ron Kim said.
Pitney Meadows Community Farm was founded in 2016 with a mission is to celebrate and explore agricultural education, healthy food production, and recreation. It is located on 166 acres on the west side of Saratoga Springs and is preserved in perpetuity as a working farm. Since 2016, it has successfully transitioned from a volunteer-led endeavor to professional non-profit operation, led by expert full-time staff collaborating with the Saratoga community, according to documents presented to the city by the organization.
In 2022 PMCF welcomed over 6,000 visitors and community members; donated 8,743 pounds of produce; supported more than 100 community gardeners; hosted 162 educational programs; added a full-time staff member to lead a food sovereignty program; and collaborated with more than 20 organizations. However, the parcel is divided into three separate sections, leaving agricultural fields without access to power.
The organization says to sustain itself as a regenerative agriculture, public health, and ecological asset for future decades it is addressing the significant irrigation and power needs with climate-smart approaches, identifying solar infrastructure as a natural solution to provide the electricity required for the irrigation, propagation, and gathering facilities for the farm’s extensive community-driven operations.
The total project budget is $336,500. Thus far, $49,000 in grant funding has been received for the solar initiative, and the organization sought the one-time investment by the city of Saratoga of $150,000 in PMCF’s transition to solar energy.
Phillips Appointed
New Assistant City Attorney
Michael Phillips was appointed Assistant City Attorney of Saratoga Springs, during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.
Phillips, who was admitted to the NYS Bar in June of 1991, recently ran as Democrat challenger in the county District Attorney race, an election in which incumbent Republican District Attorney Karen Heggen ultimately emerged victorious.
Compensation stipulated is $2,019 per week for a standard 40-hour work week.
Human Rights Protection Amendment Tabled for Two Weeks
The council seemingly was set to approve the addition of a “Human Rights Protection” chapter to City Code, but a conflict over the clarity of specific language inspired council debate and resulted in the matter being
tabled until the city’s next meeting, on April 4.
The first designation under the Human Rights Protection chapter is scheduled to be the protection of reproductive rights. In doing so, the city says it is recognizing the importance of reproductive healthcare as a matter of health, privacy, and equality and to ensure that those rights are upheld for all city residents.
While N.Y. State has protections for reproductive rights in place, city Mayor Ron Kim noted that other cities in the state of N.Y. have adopted similar city protective ordinances in light of more restrictive policies being implemented recently in other states.
New Project Proposal Cycle is Open for Participatory Budgeting

SIX MONTHS IN, SPECKLED PIG BREWING COMPANY IS THRIVING IN BALLSTON SPA
by Dylan McGlynn Saratoga TODAY
BALLSTON SPA — The Speckled Pig Brewing Company opened its doors just under six months ago, and business has been strong for the local brewers.
Located at 11 Washington Street in the Village of Ballston Spa, Speckled Pig offers a variety of beers, seltzers, and pizzas, all of which are produced in-house.
Larry Heid, a partner at Speckled Pig, said the first six months have gone “better than we had expected,” noting the strong response from local community members.
“The Village of Ballston Spa, the residents here have been so warm,” said Heid. “They were super receptive to having a brewery. It’s become kind of like a home base for the village. We’re very happy with how it’s progressing.”
That progression has gone quickly, as Speckled Pig has already ventured into the
distribution market, partnering with Saratoga Eagle to offer kegs of their beers at local bars.
“To be six months in and doing that is insane,” said R.J. Elliott, a partner at Speckled Pig. “So it’s been hectic, brewing as fast as humanly possible to keep up.”
The brewery is registered as a New York Farm Brewery, meaning that 60% of grains and hops used in the making of their beers must be sourced from within New York State. All of their beers and pizza are made on-site, with Elliott saying, “Local is kind of the name of our game.”
“Everything we do, we tie back to the people around here, supporting local businesses,” Elliott said, noting the Speckled Pig has a partnership with Coffee Planet, and has hosted a variety of fundraisers for booster clubs from Ballston Spa High School.
Elliott, a graduate of Ballston Spa High School, said it is meaningful to be able to establish a business in the village.
“It’s all anyone talks to me about now, ‘How’s the Pig?’,” Elliott said. “It’s the first thing that’s on everyone’s mind.”
Heid said the brewery is seeing “a lot of repeat customers.”
“On any given day, I will know, like, at least half the people that are here from just coming back,” said Heid.
The local support can be easily observed inside the brewery, as a wall across from the bar is covered with the names of members of the Speckled Pig’s ‘Founders Club.’ The Founders Club hosts private events and offers tastings of new beers, among other perks. Elliott said over 300 people signed up for the club within the brewery’s first two weeks of opening.
“And we capped it at that,” said Elliott. “We had a lot of people still asking us to join, but we stopped it because we want to be able to, on the Wednesdays that we do open for Founders, have them all get a seat when they come in.”
It has been a drastic turnaround for the property, which sat vacant for many years before Elliott’s family purchased it. However, they initially did not have any plans for a brewery.
“We just wanted to clean it up for the village,” Elliott said. “That was the only goal. For years, it had sat here. You’re talking 15 to 20 years without anything in it.”
Then Larry and Mary-Jo Heid came into the picture. Looking for a brewery in the
area, they connected with Kelly Delaney-Elliott, R.J.’s mother and a real estate broker.
“We had no brewery intention in mind until we met the Heids,” said Elliott. “A year later, we were open. So it happened fast. It still feels like it was yesterday.”
The brewery came flying out of the gate, offering 11 beers and a seltzer on their first day of business, which Elliott said was “crazy.”
“Nobody told us we weren’t supposed to do that, we just kind of went for it,” said Heid.
“To do that right off the bat meant literally as fast as you could possibly turn the tank, we’re brewing the next cycle,” added Elliott. “For the first couple weeks, you’d look at the menu and you’d see a line through like three of them, because we just kicked the seven kegs we had, and we had three more days until we got the tank.
Now, it’s a pretty huge achievement that we’ve got all our beers on tap and we’re ahead of it.”
The brewery also has big plans as the weather gets warmer, with Elliott saying the Speckled Pig is looking to open a rooftop deck in the summer. Currently, the brewery operates solely on the top floor of the building (roughly 4,500 square feet). Looking further into the future, Speckled Pig also plans to deepen their roots in distribution. Heid said the company hopes to start selling cans of their beer “within a year.”
Ultimately, Elliott said being able to share the brewery with the people of Ballston Spa is “one of the coolest feelings.”
“I just get a ton of pride being able to do it in Ballston Spa,” said Elliott. “It’s my hometown, and it’s nice to be able to create a business that can manufacture right here.”

GATEWAY HOUSE OF PEACE NEW THRIFT STORE OPENS DOORS
by Dylan McGlynn Saratoga TODAY
MILTON — The Gateway House of Peace Thrift Store officially opened its doors this month, helping to raise funds for end-of-life services provided by the Gateway House of Peace.
Located at 408 Geyser Road, proceeds from all of the thrift store’s sales go toward the Gateway House of Peace’s services. Elaine Pearson, director of the Gateway House Thrift Store, said they began renting the space in December before officially opening on March 1.
“It’s been wonderful,” said Pearson of the experience since opening. “We’ve been blessed with a lot of donations from the community. Our sales have been great. The community has been very supportive.”
The Gateway House of Peace offers end-of-life care at no cost to its residents or their families. Typically, the Gateway House has raised money through a variety
of fundraisers. Pearson said the thrift store will allow Gateway to see a year-round revenue stream.
“We’re hoping the thrift store is going to help alleviate all the fundraising that we have to do,” Pearson said. “That was our ultimate goal. We’ve talked about it for five to ten years now, doing this, and we just never did it. Finally, we said, ‘We’re just going to do it.’”
After searching for a location for roughly two years, Pearson said the Geyser Road location became available “out of the blue.” She said having the space available is “a wonderful feeling.”
“It’s an accomplishment,” said Pearson. “We’ve been planning for so long, and for our dream to come true, it’s an absolutely wonderful experience and wonderful feeling.”
The Gateway House of Peace runs an annual yard sale to help raise funds, with Pearson saying the thrift store began as an extension of the yard sale.
“We have hundreds and hundreds of people that come through,” said Pearson of the yard sale. “That’s
really why we wanted the thrift store, because the yard sales were such a big hit, and great fundraiser.”
Pearson said the funds raised at the thrift store will go toward day-to-day operations at the Gateway House, including paid nursing staff, utilities and bills, and more. The thrift store has just one paid employee, manager Cassandra Roner, who is assisted by a variety of volunteers.
Roner said it has been “amazing” to see how many volunteers have offered their time to the store.
“I’m involved in a lot of organizations, from sports to my church, and sometimes it’s hard to get volunteers,” said Roner. “So to see people come in here and want to volunteer their time, it shows you what the mission of Gateway House means to people.”
Pearson also mentioned the community has been very supportive, noting that many local businesses helped provide various donations when the store was being prepared for opening.
“So many of the businesses,
there’s so many of them that have donated to us with paint, and jewelry counters, and shelving,” Pearson said. “They’ve been absolutely wonderful, donating items to us to get started.”
The store’s location on Geyser Road is also an advantage, just over a mile from the Gateway House of Peace. Pearson said that while the thrift store’s current location is “a little bit too small,” it provides strong connectivity between the two locations.
“I really wanted to stay close
to Gateway House,” Pearson said. “I didn’t want to leave the area for a bigger space. It’s connected. People know, just go around the corner and there’s Gateway House.”
The store will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony “once the weather gets nicer,” said Pearson. She said they hope to eventually raise $100,000 yearly for the Gateway House of Peace.
“What I’d like to see is $100,000 a year,” said Pearson. “That’s my ultimate goal. If we make that, I’d be very happy.”

New York State Should Deliver Newspapers: A Front-Page Rescue
Content Provided by: amNY Member Carrie Woerner, the primary sponsors of this legislation, for bringing it forward for consideration. It’s believed that legislators are considering rolling the Local Journalism Sustainability Act into the final, negotiated state budget this spring, but we need you, our readers, to reach out to your state elected officials to communicate how important local news is to you and how this bill would help your local news coverage.
NEW YORK — Albany lawmakers have the chance this month to do something their colleagues in Washington, DC couldn’t: Give a major shot in the arm to local journalism.
The New York version of the “Local Journalism Sustainability Act” is being considered as being enacted as part of the state budget due to be adopted on or about April 1. If passed, the act would provide more tax credits over the next five years to newspaper publishers across the state for the purpose of employing full-time reporters and editors.
We thank state Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assembly
The federal version was part of the failed Build Back Better bill, but we hope that both New York Democrats and Republicans recognize the value of good journalism in their communities — New York’s version ought to be overwhelmingly adopted.
The costs of supporting free and independent journalism through tax breaks, similar to those offered to the entertainment industry, are small — but the return on the investment is exponentially larger.
Without question, the Local Journalism Sustainability Act will do wonders for a New York journalism industry hard hit by years of economic difficulty — from soaring prices of newsprint
in recent months to massive reductions in print advertising over the past two decades. Newsrooms across the Empire State have decreased in size; some have shuttered altogether.
According to the New York News Publishers Association, New York state saw its number of daily newspapers drop from 62 to 54 between 2004 and 2019. The loss was even more staggering for weekly
newspapers across the Empire State, as the number plunged during those same 15 years, from 439 in 2004 to 249 in 2019.
The free press acts as an unofficial check on the three branches of government — serving the readers with independence, obligated to accurately, fairly and truthfully report what’s happening while holding powerful people and agencies accountable. Companies like ours are also able to offer our content in large part for free making news accessible and available to all.
From an economic standpoint, the tax credits provided through this act will help employ reporters and editors, keeping an important sector of our economy sustainable.
According to the Economic Policy Institute, every 100 jobs in newspapers and related media sustains 268 additional jobs.
The Local Journalism Sustainability Act will strengthen and reinvigorate journalism in New York at a critical time. It will ensure that your local newspapers and websites will always be there to tell you what’s going on, what you need to know, and what you ought to know.
We urge the state legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul to make this act part of the state budget both now, and in the years to come. Let’s deliver a front-page rescue for all of New York! Please call your State Senators and Assemblymembers.

“Thanks to the support of the community, we are able to add Fort Edward and Shenendehowa High Schools to the scholarship program,” said Mark Mulholland, founder and president of Kelly’s Angels. “The scholarships, which honor the memory of my late wife, Kelly, who was a schoolteacher, are meant to support students who have persevered through adversity and encourage them
to keep moving forward and reaching higher.”
The application requires the student’s transcript, college essay, letter(s) of recommendation written to colleges on their behalf, information related to extracurriculars and/or service, and a short essay that speaks to the aforementioned criteria for the Kelly’s Angels scholarship. Applications can be found at KellysAngelsInc.org/ application-ka. The deadline for submitting an application is April 28. Questions about the scholarships can be emailed to KellysAngelsInc@gmail.com.
The tournament raises roughly $10,000 each year, Stevens said. He said the Fairways of Halfmoon have “been a great partner” for the tournament.
Stevens also added that it is meaningful to see the strong response from participants and
“It makes me so proud and humbled that they feel we are a worthy cause to come out and support,” Stevens said. “We’re extremely happy, and we’re extremely grateful. Personally, as a 4-H leader, I couldn’t be happier to have such a great fundraiser that is established year after year, still continues to grow today, and provides opportunities for my kids.”
For more information or to register for the tournament, visit ccesaratoga.org. Registration is due by May 26.

GREENFIELD Summer Camp
Greenfield Summer Day Camp Simply Focuses on Kids Just Being Kids in the Great Outdoors
In today’s over-structured world where kids spend a big part of their days looking at electronics, the one thing most grade school parents agree on is when school is out, they want their kids out… in the great outdoors. When summer comes, the pressure is on for parents to adequately entertain them without overscheduling or breaking the bank. The Town of Greenfield’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional activities that promise to leave children exhausted and happy.
Campers spend 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Middle School, at 515 Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as obstacle courses, hiking, Taekwondo, arts and crafts, as well as many organized games and sports like soccer, flag football, kickball and more. Campers participate in themed days like “Super Hero” and “Hat” Day and painting, tie-dying and rock climbing. They receive weekly visits from Uncharted Wild LLC to encounter live wild animals, regularly scheduled “Water Days” for splashing around and even the chance to pal around with some local llamas. Rainy day activities bring the children inside to the school’s gymnasium
and cafeteria. Fridays end each week on a sweet note with treats from ice cream trucks and Stewart’s Shops.
“Our ever-changing schedule will send kids home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at camp with friends,” said Town of Greenfield Recreation Director Rebecca Sewell.
Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 25 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves. Parents can choose early drop off for an additional cost and all students are eligible for the town’s Free Lunch Program, daily on-site and during camp. Signups open in March to Town of Greenfield residents, and in April open to the public. More information can be found by calling Rebecca Sewell at 518-428-2267 or visiting www.greenfieldny.org. Scholarships are available.

Food
World Flavors: INDIA
by Andrea Grom
Preparing and sharing delicious, wholesome vegetarian Indian food is a labor of love for Sneha Narayanan and Sathya Raghavan of Daily Fresh.
Sneha and Sathya came from Chennai, South India, and began their cooking journey while living in Atlanta, Georgia, where Sathya studied. Because Sneha couldn’t work or study then, she developed her passion for cooking, inspired by her parents, brother, books, blogs, and travels. Eventually, Sneha compiled over 150 tasty, tried-and-true recipes on her cooking blog, Cook with Sneha (www.cookwithsneha.com).
The vibrant international student community at Georgia Tech was the first to fall in love with Sneha’s cooking. During festive weekends, the couple held informal gatherings at their home and cooked for as many as 50 people, with home-style Indian dishes frequently taking center stage. These events fostered community and connection.
In 2014, they moved to the Albany area, and in 2018 Sneha and Sathya began their cooking and catering business, Daily Fresh. They joined the Saratoga Farmers’ Market in 2019. Sathya also works full-time as an engineer, and they are raising three young children. Sneha prepares all her dishes from scratch, using fresh, preservative-free ingredients. Her sauces are homemade, and she grinds her spices by hand.
Daily Fresh offers specialties from both North and South India. North Indian food has dynamic flavors, including onions, tomatoes, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. South Indian dishes stand out in different ways, highlighting vegetable stews, lentils, rice, and flavors like coconut, fenugreek, curry
leaves, and tamarind. For example, dosas, flat savory flourless/eggless crepes made of rice and black lentils (urad daal), are 100% South Indian. This summer, Daily Fresh will again offer their fresh dosas and rotis (whole wheat flatbreads) at the market.
Recently, Sneha and Sathya moved to a new commercial kitchen, which has inspired them to expand their business. They will attend four markets this year! Sneha and Sathya are excited to share more of their food with the community and are grateful for everyone’s encouragement and support. Find Daily Fresh online at www.dailyfreshfood.online/.
Let’s connect to our history, traditions, and community with flavorful food! On Saturday, March 25, from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, celebrate world foods at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s International Flavor Fest at the Wilton Mall food court. Our friends at the World Awareness Children’s Museum invite children to make paper fortune cookies, and families and market-goers may pick up a passport for a “journey around the world,” earning a prize when filling it with stamps from vendors. Learn more at www.saratogafarmersmarket.org and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @SaratogaFarmersMarket.
INGREDIENTS:
*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market
• 3 cups of cabbage*,
finely chopped
• 5 shallots*, finely chopped
• 2 green chilies, chopped
• 3/4 cup of grated coconut, adjust to taste
• 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder
• A few curry leaves
• Salt to taste
• 2 tsp of coconut oil
• 1/2 tsp of black mustard seeds
• Asafoetida, a pinch
INSTRUCTIONS :
1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except salt, coconut oil, mustard seeds, and asafoetida.
2. In a wide pan, heat coconut oil on medium flame, add mustard seeds, and as they crackle, add asafoetida, and the cabbage mixture. Stir well. Add salt and mix.
3. Close the pan with a tight lid and let the cabbage cook in the steam, stirring occasionally. The cabbage lets out enough water to cook in its moisture, if the cabbage takes longer time to cook, sprinkle little water (a tbsp or two), cover and cook.
4. Check for salt and remove from heat. Serve with Parippu Curry, Theeyal, sambhar, or Rasam.
Recipe from Sneha Narayanan, www.cookwithsneha.com

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Trenton Doyle Hancock will deliver the sixth-annual Winter/ Miller Lecture at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, 6 p.m. Thursday, March 30. The in-person event is free and open to the public. Hancock, who lives and works in Houston, Texas, is widely praised for melding comic book aesthetics, religion, race, and storytelling in exuberant paintings, drawings, and installations. In a fantastical narrative he’s developed for almost two decades, the character Torpedo Boy functions
as the artists’ alter ego who protects the benevolent Mounds from the wrath of the Vegans of the underworld.
Previous Winter/Miller Lectures were delivered by Nicole Eisenman, 2018; Chris Ware, 2019; Wangechi Mutu, 2020; Nick Cave, 2021; and Juliana Huxtable, 2022.
Hancock, who was born in 1974 in Oklahoma City, first achieved national prominence when, in 2000, he was one of the youngest artists included in the Whitney Biennial Exhibition. Since then, he has had numerous solo exhibitions around the world.

Adirondack Thunder To Host Annual “Stick It To Cancer” Weekend
GLENS FALLS — The Adirondack Thunder will “Stick it to Cancer” with its annual fundraiser for the C.R. Wood Cancer Center on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25. The Capital Region’s professional hockey team will host a series of events supporting those impacted by the disease as they take on the Worcester Railers at the Cool Insuring Arena. The puck drops for both games at 7 p.m.
Since its inception in 2015, the Thunder’s “Stick it to Cancer” program has raised awareness and tens of thousands of dollars for local cancer programs. Through contributions from last year’s event alone, the team donated more than $31,000 to the Glens Falls Hospital’s cancer treatment facility.
“We’re proud to support the vital work of the C.R. Wood Cancer Center with these events,” said Adirondack Thunder President Jeff Mead. “Together with our incredible fans, we hope to top last year’s record fundraising total while honoring the lives and legacies of our neighbors and loved ones. The competition on the ice will be as fierce as ever, but this weekend
is about much more than hockey as we gather as a community to stand up to this disease.”
Following Friday’s game, the Thunder invites fans to Paint the Ice Night, presented by Colorize. With a $10 donation to the C.R. Wood Cancer Center, guests can write a personal message or the name of a loved one affected by cancer on the ice. The messages will be sealed into the surface for Saturday evening’s contest.
At Saturday’s game, the first 1,000 fans will receive an exclusive Adirondack Thunder “Stick it to Cancer” t-shirt.
The Thunder will wear special purple “Stick it to Cancer” awareness jerseys throughout the weekend. After Saturday’s match-up, fans will have the opportunity to bid on the jerseys during a live auction, with all proceeds benefiting the C.R. Wood Cancer Center. Thunder players will be accompanied on the ice by local cancer survivors during this event.
Cancer prevention, support and fundraising activities will take place throughout the weekend, beginning in the Cool Insuring Arena lobby prior to
both games as the New York State Dental Association offers free oral cancer screenings. Fans who participate in a screening will be automatically entered into a raffle to win special Adirondack Thunder merchandise.
Tickets for “Stick it to Cancer” weekend or future home games can be purchased at ECHLthunder.com.
BHBL Rotary Club, Camp Stomping Ground, & Immersion
PT
Host ‘4 Season 4K’ Fun Run Events
MIDDLE GROVE — The second installment of the new fun run series, the 4 Season 4K, will take place on Saturday, April 1, at 10:00 a.m. at Camp Stomping Ground (3430 Boyhaven Rd, Middle Grove).
Community members, families and pets of all ages and abilities are welcome to run, walk or dance through the trails of Camp Stomping Ground. Megan James, owner of Immersion PT & coach of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake cross country & track teams, designed the fun run series as a way to inspire new runners, and foster appreciation for our natural spaces in a fun, familyfriendly environment.
“It will be spring in upstate New York, so we are hoping for a muddy run to kick off the season!” says James.
Proceeds from the events will go to BH-BL Rotary Club, which supports many other local organizations and events, including Camp Stomping Ground, and Immersion PT’s “Team Teen” programming for young female athletes.
The new trail will tour through Camp Stomping Ground’s infrastructure, existing trails and the neighboring NYS Forest. Participants should note that trail runs in some areas are ungroomed so caution and surefootedness
are advised. The spring run will also highlight maple syrup-based creations for post-run snacking, local maple syrup for sale, and non-traditional prizes, including one for the muddiest runner & the person who brings the “biggest squad” to the run. There will be no time-based, age-group or overall placing awards at any of the events in this series.
Tickets to the event can be purchased through: campstompingground.org/4s4k
NOTE: In the event of extreme weather or extenuating circumstances, the race will be postponed to Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m.
