SARATOGA SPRINGS —
After poor weather postponed the original event date, the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s Spring Auto Show is all set for its new date: Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saratoga Spa State Park.
Over 1,000 cars, trucks, and motorcycles are expected on the show field. As a special incentive, the 1,000th registrant will receive a PLUS Museum Membership valued at $150, offering unlimited admission to museum exhibits and programs for a full year.
“Along with the membership, we’re going to reserve a display space right next to me in the award area for the 1,000th entrant’s car, truck, or motorcycle,” said show MC Ron Hedger. “I’m looking forward to interviewing him or her, along with our trophy winners selected by the judges.”
With the Muscle Car Show now taking place on the same date, the museum is creating
a dedicated display area for all pre-registered Muscle Car entries—giving these American powerhouses the attention they deserve.
Another exciting addition to this year’s event is the EV Ride and Drive — brought to you by ENYCAR. Guests will have the opportunity to test drive participating electric and hybrid vehicles throughout the day. Whether you’re curious about EV technology or ready to make the switch, this hands-on experience is a must for forward-thinking drivers.
While the Spring Auto Show was rescheduled, the 2025 Corvette Sweepstakes drawing was held on the original date of May 10. The Museum is pleased to announce that the winner of the brand-new Corvette and $20,000 in cash is Philip Ting, entry #126936. Congratulations to Philip and thank you to all who supported the museum by entering!
To accommodate the
expanded field, new judging classes have been added for 2025, ensuring all types of vehicles are recognized. The awards ceremony begins at 1 p.m., with Hedger interviewing winners across nine judged categories, culminating in the prestigious Best in Show.
Advance registration is available now at www. saratogaautomuseum.org for
just $20, a $5 savings off the day-of rate. All registrants receive two museum admissions, including access to the featured exhibit Speed – Style – Legacy: The Corvette Story in the newly opened Golub Gallery.
The show remains free to spectators and includes a full lineup of vendors, food trucks, and sponsor displays from Alfa Romeo of Albany, Northeast
Acura, Saratoga Honda, Porsche of Clifton Park, and Mohawk Collision Center. On-field registration and parking open at 8 a.m. on the museum’s spacious event field along the Avenue of the Pines.

The Wesley Community is celebrating one of its own after LeadingAge New York bestowed its highest honor on Wesley CEO
J. Brian Nealon at a conference on Tuesday, May 20 at the Saratoga Springs City Center.
Nealon’s four-decade-long career at The Wesley Community began in 1985 when he assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer.
In 2003, he was appointed to Chief Executive Officer and has continued at the helm of the continuum-of-care campus since that time. Nealon was enthusiastically nominated by staff and peers for the prestigious 2025 LeadingAge New York award.
The Lawrence E. Larson Memorial Award of Honor is a tribute to the late Lawrence E. Larson, the association’s first chairman, for his distinguished service, dedication and foresight in aging services. The annual award is given to a member who has made outstanding contributions to the field and is a recognized leader at the state and
national level, with a reputation for humanitarian achievement and professional vision.
“I am absolutely humbled to be the recipient of this deeply meaningful award. To be recognized this way by colleagues, friends, staff and family members of Wesley residents is truly a highlight of my career,” Nealon said. “Lawrence Larson’s enduring legacy has been an inspiration to all of us who are privileged to do this work. I will be forever grateful for this special honor.”
Nealon, a native of Latham, NY, received an accounting degree from UAlbany in 1977. He initially worked as a Medicaid auditor examining the books of nursing homes. His career path led him to Teresian House, a nursing home in Albany, where he worked for six years prior to his arrival at Wesley in 1985.
LeadingAge New York is a member of the eponymous national association comprising 5,600 non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing policies
and conducting research that supports, enables and empowers people to live fully as they age. It annually recognizes the extraordinary dedication and contributions of its members at different levels of leadership and service in the field of long-term health care.
“There is no one who more embodies personal leadership and commitment to the field of long- term care than Mr. Nealon. Not only has he successfully led The Wesley Community for over 40 years, he has done so through tumultuous times, times of uncertainty in the field, times of overwhelming challenges that would have defeated a lesser person,” said Christopher R. Lyons, Chief Executive Officer of Aim Services, Inc. “The Wesley Community would not be the leader in long-term care that it is in our community without Brian... Great Leaders are authentic, they walk with a clarity of purpose and character that is genuine; that’s Brian Nealon. I am honored to be his colleague and blessed to be his friend.”
“Brian speaks from the heart when speaking to the staff, and he means it. When talking, he makes it so we all understand what he is speaking about, and sometimes the conversations are not easy, but Brian does it with compassion and grace. It opens up the conversation so anyone feels they can ask a question. Not all CEOs can manage that. Brian does this every single time,” said Patricia Seber, Director of Independent Living, Woodlawn Commons at The Wesley Community.
“Brian’s leadership is characterized by a rare combination of vision, empathy and action. He is a tireless advocate for our residents, ensuring their wellbeing and dignity are always prioritized. He also fosters a positive and supportive work environment where every staff member feels valued and respected,” said Meghan Glowa, Director of Human Resources, The Wesley Community.

ALBANY — Greeting the governor. Suiting up to play for the Albany FireWolves. Winning the judges’ choice award at a fashion show in Saratoga Springs.
For the past year or so, it felt like everywhere you looked in the Capital Region, there was Intern Aaron (real name: Aaron Madej), a content producer and social media star who, until earlier this month, worked at Two Buttons Deep, a digital media company that has collaborated with Stewart’s Shops, the Saratoga Casino Hotel, and a host of other local institutions.
Then, with one swift social media post, he was gone.
“The rumors are true, Intern Aaron has left Two Buttons Deep; he quit,” announced the company’s co-founder Jack Carpenter in a May 8 video. “I speak for the team when I say that we’re bummed. We didn’t see this coming, and I felt he had a lot more potential here in our world, but alas, he’s got new opportunities coming his way and he’s doing what’s best for Intern Aaron, and really that’s all that matters.”
But the Aaron Madej story didn’t end there. Rather, it entered its sequel, “Empire
[State] Strikes Back” era.
“When my departure happened, it came to a certain point where I realized that I needed to prioritize myself and my mental health and go forward and take new opportunities that also align with my personal, career-driven mission,” Madej told Saratoga TODAY.
That mission? To become an on-air personality for QVC, the home shopping network that Madej said he’s been watching since he was four years old.
“I have always been amazed at the persuasive tone of reporters on QVC, and that sort of carried through my entire life,” Madej said. “No joke, I put QVC on in the background in my house. It’s literally on the TV muted right now.”
Madej’s long-time admiration of QVC has helped dictate where his career is headed next, now that he’s officially a free agent. He’ll be working with Lola Saratoga, the downtown boutique known for its designer handbags, selling their products live on TikTok. Madej is also looking to expand his presence from social media to TV screens. It’s all in pursuit of his QVC dream.
“If QVC called me today, the second call would be to my landlord to cancel my lease,” Madej quipped.
Although he’d skip town for such an opportunity, Madej
said he believes he’ll always end up back at home here in the Capital Region.
“I love it here,” said Madej, who grew up in Amsterdam. “It’s all I’ve ever known.”
While attending Amsterdam High School, the former intern fell in love with the world of marketing and knew he wanted to pursue it as a career. Fast forward a few years later and Madej, now a student at the University at Albany, saw an opening at Two Buttons Deep. Interested in a fun and flexible opportunity, it was a natural fit.
His tenure at the company began with an internship (hence his nickname) in fall 2023 before he was promoted to content producer. In that role, he appeared on the Buttonista Show podcast, met with clients, and curated social media content. His time at the company taught him not only how to be a success in the social media landscape, but it also provided a crash course in the businesses and power players of the Capital Region. But becoming a notable on-camera personality wasn’t something Madej initially expected.
“I got to learn, especially from Taylor Rao [aka the Buttonista], a lot of what it takes to be on camera and how we can shift our personalities to be best for the camera,” he said.
Despite the shift, Madej said his public persona is genuine, albeit a bit more
extroverted than his true self. And when his true self is out and about in the world, he said he’s often approached by fans.
“It’s very strange to be that hyper-local celebrity,” Madej said. “It’s really great to be able to connect with people and also remind myself every day that my small work that I do really makes a positive impact in people’s lives and makes them feel better not only about themselves but also about the area that they live in.”
Whether selling handbags, interviewing the governor,
dancing with the FireWolves, strutting his stuff at Panza’s, or ending up on QVC, the artist formerly known as Intern Aaron is, at heart, a Capital Region devotee.
“I love that every single city has a little bit of a different culture,” he said. “Every day I can wake up and I can choose what I want. If I want a big city life or if I want to go to the track or if I want to go to the Adirondacks and do some hiking, it’s all within arm’s reach. And that’s what I love about it.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Cardona’s Market recently concluded its 80th anniversary celebration by holding a special event at its newly renovated Saratoga location. The event featured various giveaways, new products, and food specials. Local officials including State Senator Jim Tedisco, Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford, and Saratoga County Supervisor Matt Veitch were in attendance.
Third and fifth graders from the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs had the opportunity to connect with history recently. While fifth graders participated in a pentathlon with neighboring Waldorf schools, the third graders learned how wool goes from sheep to garment.
The Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs hosted a Pentathlon—an honored Waldorf tradition celebrating the strength, beauty, and balance of the ancient Greek ideals.
The school was proud to host students from six neighboring Waldorf schools at Gavin Park as they competed in events such as javelin, discus, long jump, running and wrestling.
More than just a competition, the Pentathlon is a rite of passage that honors each child’s unique abilities and their spirit of sportsmanship. The annual event takes place as the culmination of the fifth grade’s in-depth studies about Greek history and culture.
Third Grade, meanwhile, recently enjoyed their second annual field trip to Brookside Museum to participate in its Sheep to Shawl program. This immersive experience includes both demonstrations and hands-on activities related to wool processing: shearing a sheep, washing and carding wool, spinning and making a shawl.
The four unique stations kept the students actively engaged as they observed and participated in the shawlmaking process. The day was both educational and a lot of fun!
The Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs serves children and their families from early preschool through Eighth grade. At the Waldorf School, we value the healthy development of the whole individual, in mind, body and spirit.

Saratoga Springs— Saratoga Independent School (SIS) is thrilled to announce the expansion of its award-winning Preschool (PreK) program for the upcoming 2025–2026 school year.
Designed for 3- and 4-yearold children, the program offers a warm, happy, and nurturing environment where young learners thrive through a balance of play and enriching educational experiences.
This expansion reflects increasing demand from
families seeking a high-quality, developmentally appropriate program that encourages intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth in a safe and supportive setting.
“At Saratoga Independent School, we believe children learn best through hands-on, meaningful experiences,” said Shauna Swinimer, Lower School Director. “Our PreK expansion will allow more families to access the type of early education that nurtures curiosity, confidence, and kindness.”
Academic scholarships totaling $30,000 were awarded to six Saratoga Springs High School students by the Saratoga Springs Lions Club.
The $10,000 Jack Berkowitz Memorial Scholarship for scholastic achievement and community service was presented to Carol Wang; two $5,000 scholarships were
awarded to Sarah Woytowich and Norah Hoke; and three $2,500 scholarships went to Rory Serritella, Katelyn Hogan and Liam D’Evelyn.
All five were cited for their scholastic achievements, their involvement in sports and music, and their ongoing participation in volunteer activities.
The SIS PreK program emphasizes small class sizes, with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio and two experienced educators in each classroom. Children enjoy hands-on, thematic learning that incorporates early literacy and math skills into everyday activities. Students also participate in Spanish and music classes each week, adding rich layers to their language and creative development.
Students will spend time outdoors on the school’s 60-acre campus, exploring wooded trails, learning in natural settings, and developing gross motor and social skills on the PreK playground. Daily beforeand after-care options as well as flexible enrollment options are available to meet the needs of different families.
The Half Day Morning program runs Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The Full-Time Full Day program runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Families looking for added flexibility can also take advantage of the Full Day
Flex option, allowing students to attend full-day sessions on a drop-in basis, depending on availability.
Saratoga Independent School accepts applications on a rolling basis, but families are encouraged to schedule a tour and apply early, as PreK classes fill quickly.

Frommargaritas to slow-cooker sweet chili jam, rhubarb showcases its versatility in the food world as well as its resilience as a hardy spring perennial, returning year after year.
At the farmers’ market, rhubarb accentuates displays with bright crimson and green stalks at the stands of Lovin’ Mama Farm, Kokinda Farm, and Owl Wood Farm. A rhubarb and asparagus pyramid was spotted at Gomez Veggie Ville, making a spectacle of spring’s abundance. For cooking and baking inspiration, we turned to the experts, the growers. Corinne Hansch of Lovin’ Mama Farm is thrilled with their very first rhubarb harvest. “I love a good strawberry rhubarb jam,” she remarked with a smile. At Kokinda Farm, Laurie Kokinda recalls an incredible orange-rhubarb custard, as well as another favorite, strawberry-rhubarb pie.
While exploring the farmers’ market, we met Diane Whitten, a Cornell Cooperative Extension Food & Nutrition Educator and Master Preserver, who shared her favorite way to prepare rhubarb –rhubarb raisins. Coat ½ inch pieces of rhubarb with sugar and refrigerate for 48 hours. The sugar draws water out of the rhubarb, creating a syrupy juice that can be used in various beverages. The rhubarb pieces are then dehydrated to create sweet-tart “raisins” that can be used in baking or as a snack. Whether you’re making chicken tagine or coffee cake, make a trip to the farmers’ market this Wednesday or Saturday while rhubarb is sweet, tender, and widely available. If you don’t have time to prepare rhubarb, we’ve got you covered. You can find Scandinavian baked goods featuring rhubarb at Parchment Baking Co. and strawberry, raspberry, and cherry-rhubarb jams at Kokinda Farm.
In other market news, the Clifton Park Farmers’ Market opens its Monday market, from 2 to 5 pm, on June 2, at Shenendehowa United Methodist Church on Route 146.
Before Belmont on Broadway, Wednesday, June 4, from 3 to 6 pm, SaratogaJockey.com will host a community demonstration at High Rock Park. Additionally, local author Patrice Mastianni will have copies of her new book, “Find Me in Saratoga.” We’ll have live music by the Bennett Brothers and over 20 vendors offering a variety of prepared food options so that you can enjoy dinner at the park!
Before the races take off on Saturday, June 7, beginning at 9 am at the farmers’ market, we’ll have a free horse-themed painting activity for children, a family activity table with Saratoga Springs Mobile Library, prepared food options to enjoy breakfast in the park, over 70 vendors, and live music throughout the park.
The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is open on Wednesdays from 3- 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs. Find us online at www.saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our FREE weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ SaratogaFarmersMarket.
YIELDS: 10 servings
PREP TIME: 15 min COOK TIME: 40 min
*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market
• 2 ½ cups thinly sliced rhubarb*
• 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus 1 tablespoon for sprinkling on rhubarb
• ½ teaspoon kosher salt
• ½ teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• ¼ cup white rice flour (or cornstarch)
• 9 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more to grease pan
• 1 cup sugar
• 3 eggs, room temperature*
• ⅔ cup plain whole milk yogurt*
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract*
• Whipped cream to serve
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch bundt pan (or a similar-sized round pan with a removable bottom). Alternatively, you could use a 9-inch square baking dish.
2. Put the rhubarb into a bowl and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of flour, and toss until the pieces are all covered. This coating will prevent the rhubarb from sinking to the bottom of the cake.
3. In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and white rice flour (or cornstarch. Set aside.
4 In a large mixing bowl, using a handheld electric mixer (or stand mixer), beat the butter until light and slightly fluffy, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the sugar and beat well to combine. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, adding in 1 tablespoon flour mixture after each addition and beating well before adding the next egg. Stir in the yogurt and vanilla. Using a spatula or wooden spoon, fold in the remaining flour and sliced rhubarb.
5. Turn the batter out into prepared pan, leveling the top with the back of a spoon and giving the pan a few taps on the counter to level the mix. Bake for 40 minutes, or until cake is golden brown and springs back when touched. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate or serving dish. Serve with whipped cream. Store leftover cake at room temperature for up to 3 days.

We are in the midst of so many reasons to celebrate. Among those reasons are individuals who are graduating from high school and college. I can recall the emotions of pride watching each of my children get their diploma from high school and college. For a parent, there are so many mixed emotions. During graduation day from high school, I knew my children would be fine –they would be great. Their high school graduation was just the beginning of some amazing times to come. For me, it was the start of a very different time in my life. As you watch your child cross the stage, you can feel your heart expand and surge. That moment was precious and overwhelming at the same time. During their college graduations, I cheered them and supported them as they navigated living away from home. They are out there living their own lives, and as a parent you can only sit back, hope and wish them the best. These feelings occur at all levels of watching individuals enter into new stages of their lives. That’s the thing about graduations, they bring out
“YOUR TIME HAS COME TO SHINE. ALL YOUR DREAMS
all the feelings. (And so many tears.).
Over the many years here at our store, many customers come in and tell us stories of the love of cooking that so many younger individuals have. The stories and pictures of favorite meals, menus, and creations are shared and now this person is graduating from school. Do you know someone who is graduating—what an excellent occasion. Or perhaps the person who is graduating is you, in which case, congratulations! Either way, graduation means presents are in order—and it also means it’s time to move out of that crappy college apartment. That’s why, if you’re wondering what to gift
your grad, outfitting their new adult kitchen is the way to go. It’s a new stage of life for your proud graduate, so treat them to some useful culinary tools.
At Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place; let us help you select that special culinary gift to congratulate the graduate. To all of our graduates: “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln. Remember my Foodie Friend; “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS —
When a band is named LaMP, it’s near impossible to not make an “Anchorman” reference. Thankfully, this trio of jam band veterans is in on the joke (their website is ilikelamp.com).
The curious name is a combination of the first letters of each band member’s surname. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski are both co-members of Phish frontman Trey Anastasio’s eponymous band, and Scott Metzger also shreds for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, which is widely regarded as either the best or one of the best Grateful Dead tribute acts.
Rather than repeat the same sounds they create elsewhere, this trio has used LaMP to keep things groovy, jazzy, and instrumental. To these ears, they sounded something akin to Circles Around the Sun meets 70s-era Herbie Hancock. To the ears of their audience at Putnam
Place on May 8, the sound inspired a whole lot of dancing.
According to their bio, LaMP played their first gig at a bar in Burlington, Vermont in December 2018 before entering a studio to create their debut EP, released in 2020. Five years later, a follow-up, One of Us, arrived on both vinyl and streaming platforms.
The group is one of those side projects created by talented musicians that flies a tad under the radar, but any fan should want it that way. There was no giant ticket conglomerate shelling expensive seats at LaMP’s recent gig in Saratoga Springs. Virtually anyone could afford the price of admission and find themselves an arm’s length away from the stage. From that vantage point, they could enjoy, in all its loud and live glory, the talents of three master musicians who are on stage simply because they want to be. Lest the joke be made one too many times, let it be said just once more, “I love LaMP.”

He grew up in Saratoga Springs, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team. He brought his passion for the sport to Charleston, where he is president for the Charleston Club Tennis team and an intern for the athletic department.
Coach Rich Johns, a former Saratoga Springs teacher and tennis coach for nearly four decades, asked Blaha about his accomplishments and future plans as part of the “Act With Respect Always” spotlight series.
Q: Tell us more about your position as player/coach and mentor.
A: Currently giving back day to day with my volunteer positions in tennis coaching and peer mentorship. I spend many hours working with and teaching less experienced players for our club team and I also work with current college freshmen, helping them with everything from schoolwork to social life advice. No matter what situation I am in, I try to emphasize the importance of respect both for yourself and others.
Q: What kind of modeling do you try to do to be a good leader and teammate?
A: I frequently preach the message of respect to my teammates as coach/teacher to my club team. The words respect and integrity are at the foundation of my coaching philosophy. It is also a great reminder in my personal life to treat others with respect even at difficult moments.
Q: What are your future career plans and goals?
A: I look forward to the next stage of life where I hope to pursue athletics management; the operations of athletic departments or teams, including budgets, facility management, and event planning.

SARATOGA SPRINGS
— Skidmore College’s baseball program has been growing in renown in recent years, racking up accolades and sending one of its players and one of its coaches to the majors. Although the 2025 season concluded without a championship, the Thoroughbreds are nonetheless garnering acclaim for their coaching staff, which was named the 2025 Liberty League Baseball Coaching Staff of the Year just one week prior to news that Head Coach Ron Plourde would be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
Plourde has spearheaded Skidmore’s baseball team since 1998, earning nearly 500 career wins, five Liberty League titles, and four NCAA Division III tournament appearances. He’s also received the Liberty League Coach of the Year honor five times (2005, 2010, 2022, 2023, 2025) and was named the
2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Plourde also mentored Jackson Hornung, who in 2023 became the first athlete in school history to be drafted by a professional team when he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB Draft. In 2024, another Plourde mentee, former Skidmore pitching coach Mike McFerran, joined the Oakland Athletics as the team’s pitching performance coach. He returned to the ballclub this year as its minor league pitching coordinator.
Prior to his tenure at Skidmore, Plourde played and coached collegiate baseball at St. Joseph’s College in Maine. He will be formally inducted into the state’s baseball hall of fame later this year. His coaching staff—which includes Matt Karpousis, John Barnes, and J.T. Tellstone—earned its 2025 accolade for the fifth time in Plourde’s career.
In 2025, the Thoroughbreds captured the East Division crown after finishing 9-3 in the division and advancing to the Liberty
League Tournament, where they were eliminated by Rensselaer on May 10. Overall, the squad finished 21-17-2 on the season, for a .667 winning percentage. At the plate, standout players included seniors Sam Kornet (1.097 OPS, team-leading 12 HRs and 45 RBI), Zachary Leiderman (1.022 OPS, team-high 14 doubles), Ewen Donald (.990 OPS), and junior Eddie Galvao (.981 OPS, team-high 3 triples).
On the mound, sophomore Charles Modlin garnered a 3.47 ERA across 23.1 innings, fellow sophomore Chase Siegel led the team in wins (9) and innings pitched (65.2), and junior Quinn Hocom led the Thoroughbreds in strikeouts with 71.
“Now that it’s come to an end, I can say that Skidmore baseball has been the most profound experience in my life,” said Ewen Donald in his senior testimonial, one of several that heaped high praise onto the program. “I will be forever grateful for my family, coaches, and teammates who showed me what excellence looks like. Skidmore baseball gifted me
a strong sense of meaning in life…I am proud to be a Skidmore ballplayer till I die.”
Meanwhile, Skidmore alum Jackson Hornung continues to impress with Toronto’s High-A affiliate, the Vancouver Canadians. His stats this season are the best of his pro career thus far, with a slash line of .284/.375/.407 for an OPS of .782. He’s also knocked out two dingers and smacked two doubles and a triple in only 23 games. This season is Hornung’s
second in Vancouver, after he was promoted from the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays following the 2023 season. In September 2024, Hornung was named to the Northwest League All-Star Team.
Skidmore College is also working on building a new turf baseball field on Daniels Road. The $3.4 million project was originally expected to be finished in time for the spring 2025 season but is still under construction.
