Portfolio. Yu An Lin 2019-2020

I am a Taiwanese student who has the great passion toward architecture. I have traveled the world since my childhood, and from the majestic towers of Europe's castles to the ancient shrines of Cambodia's temples, I grew to recognize how architecture defined a culture. Through observing architectural differences in more detail, I realized that each building contained a story and the creator’s ideas, which, in essence, means that architecture is a standing artwork.

As I have discover more in the field of architecture, I begin to be more obesses with the relationship between architecture and nature. Nature, to me, is one of the most compelling creations we see, and I hope to integrate concepts, such as natural light and landscape terrains, into my designs. I regard buildings as a medium for expressing the my artistic voice. In effect, I aspiered myself to create design embedding dialogue between humans and the creator because it is an undeniable interaction between civilization and nature.

I believe our life is often inspired by our surrounding environment, and I am constantly looking for innovativeways to stimulate people’s senses and instill emotions. I also hope to conduct further research into geological patterns and greener building materials to create sustainable environments for generations to come.

Project Statement_:

The purpose of the survey center project is to build a survey center providing university students to study in.

To help students better understanding concept of surveying, the project required to intergrated information of the site and generate the design concept.

Personal Objective_:

In the survey center project, I am trying to discover the relationship between nature and architecture. In this phase, I am specific looking at how the light and shadow create connection with the building. As well as how the architecture itself interacting with the land.

Survey Center_Phase One_Plan

The concept model of survey center is built base on the specific area in Nevada. Combing both mine location and commodties informations of the site and transform those data into the design language to further develop into the phase one conceptual model.

Survey Center_Phase One_Language

The design of the langauage is base on the number of commodities within each mine location. The amount of the commodities will be devides into levels and defined as primary, secondary or tertiary. Each commodities will have their own way of representation. The upper language will be growing upward and lower will grow downward.

Base on the data, precious materials have an intention of rising price so the language goes up and the industrial material have a decrease market price so the language grows below.

Create a set of form language which represent the amount of each commodity. They are defined into Primary(P), Secondary (S) and Tertiary (T)

The survey center is design to be located at the latitude: N35°51'10.8'' longtitude:W 115°26'56.03'' The considering factors of choosing the site is base on the sun direction, the topography of the area and the accessibility.

Extend the pathway for 100 unit which represent the concept unit of survey also utilize the site topography to create a half hollow halfway.

Let the edge of the room under the ground cut into the site.

Museum of Atom

Second Semester

Project Statement_:

The University of California Department of Chemistry is requesting a small museum dedicated to the explanation of the structure of the atom and the periodic table of elements.

The museum will be used for permanent and temporary displays and exhibits.

Personal_:

In the Museum of Atom project, I am trying to achieve for the modern style of the design. Connecting the concpet atom to the Museum’s design is my center focus.

I am aiming to create spaces which is relatively conceptual and interesting in this particular project.

Trying to play with the variation of the spatial design.

Mota_Phase One_Atom_Registration Plan

The conceptual model of atom project is designed base on the concept of compound: Carbide-Silicon(SiC). The major idea of the design is to interact pieces extend from carbon with the pieces extend from silicon to visualize the idea of compound.

Use the griding system of the priodic table as the guide line for the registration points. Define square each with different electrons in base on variety of orbitals.

Define the square base on ther atomic number, also can be understood as their position in the periodic table.

Carbon Grid System

Duplicate four panels for both. Organize the panels with different order. Carbon

Silicon Grid System

Silicon Base Plan

Generate cuts base on those points to create the base plan for both.

Intersect both silicon and carbon panel. Then apply silicon’s grid system on carbon’s panel and apply carbon’s grid system on silicon’s panel to imply the interaction of two atoms.

Mota_Phase One_Atom_Form Language

Design each set of form language with diffrent hierarchy base on their orbital number and the spin of the eletrons. Electrons in the first period are given the singular form, and second are given twice. Create pieces base on the rule.

The overall concept of Language Design is to create connection between two points on each plan, and base on the number generated by the set

Length:12” Width12” Height:6”

Medium: Bass Wood

When connecting 1S1 on silicon panel 1 to 1S1 on carbon panel 1, the thickness of the height will be one unit. When connecting 1S2 on silicon panel 1 to 1S2 on carbon panel one the thickness of the height will be two units and also apply the same rule for otherpieces.

When connecting 1S1 on silicon panel 2 to 1S1 on carbon panel 1, the thickness of the weight will be two unit.

All the pieces are designed base on the similar rule, the higher number they are, the thicker the pieces will be. Sample valteration of other pieces language form

Cut

When the pieces connect to larger number of the panel, the pieces will be longer or thicker

Utilize the developed language to futher cut the plan to indicate the concentration of the atom elements. the pieces when they are overlapping in order to create more interacting spaces.

Atom_Mota_Phase three_Transform and Site

Base on the given project statement and program size to adjust the model to fit the building regulations.

The “Museum of Atom” is located at the latitude: N 37°43'48.19'' longtitude: W 121°44'28.66''

Positioning the conceptual model on the site

Rotate the model 180 Degree Vertically

Extend the form of the base plan and project the thickness of the plan to the site to create small slots subtracting the volume of the site.

Rotate the model 180 Degree Horizontally

Generate the surface by connection between three major rail sets near the ground. Use the surface to cut into the ground and create basement of the museum.

_Project Statement:

The Human Health Center Project is seperated into three part including Field project, emergent structure project and Human Health Center. The purpose of the project is to visualize the relationship of how exercising affects human’s life by comparing the exercising rate with several index which are important to human over fifty states with in the United State.

_Personal:

In this project, I am pursuing the relationship between human and architecture. I believes that the the architecture is built to interact with the human which is the reason why I choose to utilize human related indexs to generate the design concept.

Study of Gustav Klimt’s Water serpents.

The reason why I study my favorite artist Klimt is because I personally amazed by the strong emotion and the visual impression forwarded through Klimt’s artwork and skills.

I consider myself an elephant, representing a mixture of power and elegance. I tend to be gentle and respective to my peers and the society. However, I would also tough up and defend my belief whenever it is necessary. My goal is to be a true “elephat person,” which I could embrace the world with my kindness, and defend my passion with my steadfast will.

“Three Dimensional Study”

The idea of this project is from two points that I consider critical while designing the three dimensional objects. To better practice those proposal, I design two models which each of them is focusing on demonstrating their own characteristics. Also, among those sub-project, I use trinagular shape as the fundation of my creation, because I always believed triangle as an powerful shape which has an unlimited potential for designing different forms of perspective.

“Series of Moment”

Medium: Water, Fresh Flower, Fishing Line, colored rope

The “Series of Moment” project is inspired by the limited time in our life. I want to convey the idea that we only life once and it is significant for us to treasure and appreciate every moment we are experiencing. Thus, I utilize the flower as the metaphor of my life in this project, I record the flower’s gesture while they are blooming. Even though those flowers have a short blooming period yet their beauty of blooming captured by the camera lives permamnent.

For this series, I record the flower from bloom to withered.
