SOLAR SHIELD ZINC OXIDE

What is the difference between UPF in clothing & SPF on sunscreen? The Ultraviolet Protection Factor or UPF on sun protective clothing is actually a very similar concept to the Sun Protection Factor or SPF rating for sunscreen but there are some differences. The major difference is that the UPF for sun protective clothing rates protection for both UVA and UVB whereas the SPF number on sunscreen only rates protection against UVB.

SOLARSHIELD ZINC OXIDE. Sun-protective clothing, with Zinc Oxide.

Does it still work on wet fabric? Yes, the protection is the same even when the fabric is wet. How long does it last for? For the lifetime of the garment (over 100 washes). Are there any other benefits of zinc oxide? Yes, it is anti-bacterial and also disperses heat making the fabric feel cooler.

Does this mean I don’t need sunscreen? Sunscreen is always recommended on areas not directly covered by our sun protective fabric, such as your chin, cheeks and hands - this will ensure maximum UV protection. Also, a person wearing a UPF 30 garment will, in practice, be protected against 29 of 30 units of UVA and UVB, whereas most people who use a SPF 30 sunscreen don’t apply enough sunscreen and, in practice, end up with significantly less protection, typically being protected against less than 15 of 30 units of UVB.

What is SolarShield ZnO? SolarShield ZnO is our new sun protection treatment. This process allows us to bring our renowned sun-protection to garments that traditionally have had little or no protection.

Is it a chemical? Yes it is a chemical called Zinc Oxide. ZnO is its chemical name. Is it safe? Yes, zinc oxide is non toxic / non irritant. It can be found in sunblock, nappy rash cream and even in temporary tooth fillings!

How does it work? Zinc Oxide absorbs UVB completely and absorbs about 70% of UVA, whilst effectively scattering the remainder.

SOLARSHIELD ZINC OXIDE fabric diagram

What is the UPF rating? The UPF will depend on the fabric it is applied to. We have fabrics rated at 20,30 & 40 UPF.

Introducing SolarShield Technology

SOLAR SHIELD

European Standard European standard BS EN 13758-2 for sun protective clothing raises the standard to 40+ UPF. The test method is the same but products that meet this level of protection will be allowed to use a new 40+ logo and state that they conform to the standard. Products that do not reach this level can say what protection they offer but cannot use the new European sun protective logo.

SOLARSHIELD. Minimum UPF40+ Sun-protective clothing, developed by Craghoppers.

A clothing protection factor (CPF) or ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is a measure of the amount of sunburning ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that penetrates through an item of clothing. It is similar to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) used for sunscreens. The higher the CPF value, the lower the UVR penetration and the better the protection against sunburn. For example, a garment with a CPF label of 20 will reduce the UVR reaching the covered skin to 1/20 of that reaching bare skin. It is assessed in the laboratory under controlled conditions using an optical instrument called a spectrophotometer, which provides a direct measurement of UVR penetration and hence the CPF value.

What is SolarShield? SolarShield clothing is Craghoppers name for its range of Sun Protective clothing. All SolarShield products have been tested for UV protection. How does it work? Sun protection is given by a combination of 3 things: the density of the fabric construction, the type of yarns used and its colour. Variations within similar looking fabrics can be large, hence why SolarShield fabrics are tested.

How long does it last? SolarShield fabrics do not depend on any wash in chemical treatments for their characteristics. Therefore the protection is permanent and can be depended upon at all times.

What is a good UPF rating? Below 15 Does not give effective sun protection 15-24 Good protection 25-39 Very good protection 40 + Excellent protection

What is the European Standard about? All garments can be measured to have a sun protection factor, even if it is low. To prevent misunderstanding, the new mark can only be used on clothing with over 40+ protection - i.e. excellent protection.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) The UPF of a garment is the level of protection it gives against harmful UVa and UVb radiation. UPF’s are calculated by measuring the amount of harmful UV Radiation that passes through the fabric.

Fabrics that reduce UVR penetration by less than 1/10 are considered to provide only minimal protection against sunburn and therefore are not assigned a CPF rating. For fabrics reducing penetration to between 1/10 and 1/19, CPF values between 10 and 19 are assigned a rating of 10+; those between 20 and 29 a rating of 20+ and those with values greater than 30, a 30+ rating. There are variations in the rating systems between countries and hence UK CPF’s may not be comparable with those of other nations. A British Standard (BS EN 13758-1:2000) describes the test method for fabrics used for clothing; another (BS EN 137582:2003) describes the classification and marking of clothing. Only clothing with a UPF of at least 40 can be labelled as UV-protective according to the standard described in the latter.

It’s a interesting thing, travel. It’s not work, but it’s not all play... Back in 1965, Craghoppers started like most epic adventures do. A couple of competitive outdoor enthusiasts, a few new ideas and a bit of ‘I bet you can’t’. Our founders challenged themselves to design the ultimate clothing for the harshest adventure - and then to test it by wearing it from the beautiful British Peak District to the heights of Everest. We’ve since made it our life’s work.

The Technology Everything produced under the Craghoppers or Bear Grylls by Craghoppers lines is meticulously planned. Innovative technologies, leading design-treatments and premier production processes are all employed to ensure the kind of attention to detail and real-world practicality that help Craghoppers stand out.

NosiLife NosiLife, the world’s most extensive collection of insect repellent clothing, has been rigorously and independently tested by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the leading test authority in Europe.

Malaria Risk Regions Non-malarial zones where protection is only necessary for comfort reasons. Strong repellents like deet are not necessary. This includes all temperate climates. Tropical areas where malaria is a real risk. Insect repellent is recommended with a minimum 30% Deet solution recommended for anywhere off the beaten track. Areas where malaria is present but there is a limited risk of infection. Precautions should be taken against biting but full anti-malaria drugs may be unnecessary, chack with a travel clinic for up to date & seasonal information. 9.5 million mosquito nets: Roughly 9.5 million mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide have been distributed throughout Africa since 2000. Although they provide effective protection, some mosquitoes have already developed an increased resistance to the insecticides used.

SmartDry

SmartDry Nano technology locks water repellant properties into fabric that ensures spills and water run right off. The technology is one of the first to offer repellency without the use of environmentally damaging flucorocarbons.

Warm

Insulation comes in many shapes and sizes to fit every adventure. Garments include incredibly lightweight microfleece for emergency layering, natural down for nighttime freezing and boucle fleece for a super-soft alternative to wool.

GORE TEX

GORE-TEX® Membrane is at the heart of all GORE-TEX® garments. It is completely wind and waterproof, but permeable for water vapor (perspiration). The GORE-TEX® Membrane contains more than 9 billion pores per square inch. An oleophobic (oil hating) substance is then targeted to prevent contamination from things like body oils and insect repellents.

Every new GORE-TEX® product prototype is put through a rigorous series of tests in the Gore testing labs before final certification.

Antibacterial

Fabric finished with an anti-bacterial treatment prevents odor from perspiration during extreme conditions

SolarDry

SolarDry fabric provides essential protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Fabrics are tested in every color to ensure that they meet a minimum UPF 40+, the international standard for clothing to be considered truly protective. The UPF of a garment is the level of protection it gives against harmful UVa and UVb radiation. UPF’s are calculated by measuring the amount of harmful UV Radiation that passes through the fabric.

Environmental Responsibility

All Craghoppers products are designed and manufactured with as little environmental impact as possible.

Fair Trade Cotton

All products are made from fair trade certified cotton products. The fair trade mark appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. Fair trade certification guarantees a fair and stable price for small-scale cotton farmers - whatever the state of the global market.

Organic Cotton

As part of Craghoppers commitment to the environment, production processes are being changed to use only organic cotton farmed without the use of potentially harmful pesticides and toxins.

Merino Wool

Many Craghoppers products use natural Merino Wool, which provides exceptional performance under many conditions, stays warm when wet and has natural anti-microbial properties.
