INSPIRED BY PERCH HILL
Bournville Orange Tulip Collection, see page 10

I’ve just come back from a fantastic trip to Holland where I and our horti team went to find lots of new dahlia varieties to trial at Perch Hill. We did just the same in spring for narcissus and tulips etc — which is what you’ll find in these pages, the best of the old and plenty that’s brand new. That’s our process with every plant and bulb you’ll find in our range — looking, selecting, trialling, refining — so we can offer our very best collections and favourite single varieties to fill your gardens with beauty, colour and abundance. That’s what we’ve been doing here now for 30 years at Perch Hill.
Have a look at our lovely things — not just for the garden. We’ve been thinking hard and creating lots of good home-things throughout 2024.
And finally, if you haven’t already got it, check out my new book, out this spring covering all sorts of autumn-relevant practicalities such as bulb lasagnes and inspiration for the most beautiful colour palettes and bulb combinations.
I hope you have fun choosing,

You can add a splash of one palette into another, but not mix colours willy-nilly from all 4 palettes. That gets too busy — and not beautiful. Try 2 colours from Sarah’s Dark and Rich Palette — as here crimson and vermilion— softened and brightened by apricot from Soft and Warm. That works well.

SARAH’S TULIP COMBINATION
COLOUR THEORY

Rich & Dark
Incredibly decadent and undeniably rich, this colour palette was one of my first true loves.
PAGES 8-12

Soft & Warm
This palette is so fashionable, with a vintage, 1970s air. I think of these as cashmere jersey colours.
PAGES 18-21

Boiled Sweet
Bold and brilliant – this is definitely one for the colour lovers amongst us.
PAGES 14-17

Soft & Cool

This is what I think of as the chicest palette. Crisp and smart, like well-pressed clothes or elegant stilettos.

A BULB LASAGNE IN A POT
To get dense and flowery spring pots, try layering bulbs, one group on top of the other, in a bulb lasagne. Creating a succession of colour has never been easier. Follow these simple steps to get started...

1
The largest and latest flowering bulbs go in deepest (20cm), moving up to the smallest and earliest on the top layer (5cm). If you have 3 layers, aim for 8cm of compost between each layer.

2
It’s good to have about 10-12cm of compost, mixed with grit (page 63) below the deepest layer. For February colour add Iris ‘Purple Hill’ (page 40) or similar, as the final top layer, just tucked under the soil surface.
3
Moisten the base of the bulb and dip into Bulb Starter (page 15). Then place the tulips, pointy end up, about 5cm apart and place your pots in full sun or dappled shade.

These photos show how our Brilliant Bulb Lasagne Collection transforms through the season, see page 42 for product details

Alliums are incredibly perennial and flower for ages. I love them for adding late spring and early summer pizzazz, as well as bringing strong colour and shape to the border. Plus, they are excellent for cutting as both flowers and seedheads, and brilliant for the bees. For more information on the contents of these collections visit our website.

Perfect Border Allium Collection
There are certain alliums which fit perfectly and hugely enhance a border — their foliage is finer and their scale and drama just right to mix in, but not take over other things. That’s just what these three have in common, planted here in our Farmhouse Garden. 3 allium varieties of varying quantities, see website for details. H.1.8m

NARCISSUS CLASSIFICATION
Narcissi are classified into 13 different groups, with each offering distinct qualities to elevate your garden. Not sure where to start? Here are Sarah’s top 5 divisions that signal the arrival of spring at Perch Hill.

Arranged here in our Pumpkin Vase with amelanchier just as they are planted in our Dutch Yard. 5 narcissi varieties, see website for details.

Triandrus
Usually, two or more hanging flowers to a stem with reflexed petals. We grow several from this group in pots, including ‘Hawera’, ‘Katie Heath’, ‘Thalia’ and ‘Lemon Drops’. They are often graceful and elegant, which makes them a standout choice for springtime glamour.
Cyclamineus
One flower to a stem with very reflexed petals. ‘Tête-à-tête’ is the most famous amongst this group.

Perfect Pot Narcissus Collection

Jonquilla and Apodanthus
Between one and five flowers to a stem, with a short trumpet that is often wider than it is long, with petals spreading or reflexed. The flowers are usually very fragrant. We love ‘Sailboat’ and the small-flowered ‘Kokopelli’. ‘Sailboat’

Poeticus
The narcissi in this division are commonly known as pheasant’s eye and have beautiful, pure white petals, very short or even disc-shaped trumpets, and incredible fragrance. This is one of the best groups for naturalising in grass, so we usually grow them in the lawn rather than in pots.
Wild (species) narcissi
The narcissi in this classification are distinguished solely by botanical name. These are the species or wild varieties that are often found naturalised in woodlands or beneath trees and shrubs. Narcissus ‘Lobularis’ is a beautiful and long-lasting example.
This stack of pots was in our Dutch Yard this spring and I could not more passionately recommend it. This greeted us with fragrance every time we opened our back door. 4 narcissi varieties, see website for details. a March-April. H.30cm
