If you don’t know much about the Chamber, or what we do, get to know us. Recognize someone on our Board? Ask them about how to get more involved, the juice is definitely worth the squeeze. Our small but mighty staff takes great pride in the work we do and we are always welcoming new members. And for those already with us, thank you for your support.

Summertime is upon us and I am really looking forward to the change of season. It feels like many changes are upon us as I see businesses shifting into new gears, after breaking through barrier after barrier. These shifts are fueled by the many changes everyone is facing in the new world we live in. It seems hard to imagine a more rewarding time to be part of a thriving business community and those among it should feel proud.

We’ve learned so much in two years… for me, I’m still learning. I have been far from perfect on the road to recovery, but giving so much along the way. Like many chamber executives, (and business owners alike) we’ve had to establish a new BBB: Balance, Boundaries and Burnout. We were often pouring so much of ourselves into our work while not knowing the path ahead, we forgot to balance in other relationships, set boundaries for those around us, and avoid burnout along the way. I’m pleased to feel on the other side of these things and grateful for the help I’ve had throughout this journey.

HELLO SANTEE!

InErrata:our Spring 2022 issue on Page 29, we incorrectly listed the wrong times for the Board of Directors meetings for Padre Dam Municipal Water District. The regular meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 4pm in the boardroom inside the Customer Service Center at 9300 Fanita Parkway, Santee. We regret the error.

We have had such a powerful start to our year with bringing back some events we haven’t seen since 2019, we are back to publishing these magazines on a quarterly basis, and we are in full-prep mode for the 2022 Santee Street Fair. LIfe is good! The strength of our membership and Board of Directors is a true testimony to why I get to do what I do. When friends or family tell me I’m always on the go, that I have a great (and fun) job, and that I know so many people around our community, they aren’t wrong. But I am thankful regularly for what this town and job provide me.

This chamber is buzzing. Look for the highlights from our Santee’s Favorites Awards Celebration and Santee Heroes Celebration. These were two exceptional evenings recognizing local businesses and local citizens through community impact awards and honoring our Person of the Year. At one of these events, an individual spoke to my heart when she said to me, “This is an emotional night for me it just feels so good to be back in a room full of people, to see these faces that I have missed so dearly. I am thankful for this!” I couldn't have agreed more as I looked around the room full of smiles. I hope to see you at our next event.

CHAIR'S MESSAGE

My husband and I are local business owners, a second-generation Electrical Contractor. We joined the chamber back in 2016 for many reasons. Santee is where our business was established, it is also where we both grew up (go Santana!), where we are raising our kids, and where we are planning for our future. The chamber has given us many outlets to gain visibility, build trust, meet local leaders, and keep our finger on the pulse of what is happening in our town. At a recent roundtable with the Chamber’s Executive Committee, I enjoyed learning that each one of us had varying reasons why we choose to volunteer with this organization.

Thank you 2022 CircleChairman'sMembers

Let’s work together to foster success in our vibrant community.

Our board of directors is an assorted group of business owners and executives offering fresh perspectives and great discussions. The seats around the table are filled with reliable, hands-on, smart professionals. The leadership skills and reputable qualities of my fellow board members are ones to truly value.

If you are already a Santee Chamber of Commerce member, I formally invite you to take part in our events and other valuable opportunities the chamber provides. We can foster success together. Of all the motivations for membership, I am certain we can agree that crafting a vibrant community is the best part of the investment in the chamber.

Santee Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Board

This organization is full steam ahead. I am happy to be writing this just after we wrapped up our second large-scale and in-person event of the year. We could not be more thrilled about it. This chamber is no stranger to producing great events however, seeing our events back to the full-scale awesomeness they were a few years ago feels so good.

- Melissa Dombo

As the chair of the board, trust me when I say, we understand that our effectiveness is not about us telling you what you need, but instead local business owners and operators exchanging ideas with us. We encourage you to engage with the chamber. Let us know what is important to your business and how you think the chamber can help you achieve more. The chamber wants to partner with our local businesses because successful businesses are an essential part of this community.

Santee has an abundance of outdoor recreation spots in town. From local businesses, parks, fields, trails and more, we encourage you to get out there and safely enjoy all our town has to offer. Here are a few of our recommendations to get you started this season!

Sportsplex USA {9951 Riverwalk Drive}

Santee Lakes plays a vital role in the social, economic and physical well-being of our guests and Santee residents. We offer wide-ranging recreational opportunities, increased property values, and we spur local economies through tourism and TOT taxes. With over 2,000 trees in our urban forest, green spaces to help cool our environment, and solar on our 3 RV storage lots, Santee Lakes helps the city of Santee with their Sustainable Santee Plan climate goals.

Park Director Laura Koval offered, “I have always known Parks Make Life Better, but this motto was tested during the global pandemic. When some Parks (including ours) were able to reopen in May of 2020, the sense of relief from our guests the day our gates reopened was palpable. It was a challenging time for everyone, but ultimately Parks are now widely recognized as critical for health and wellness. I am so proud of our team. We never stopped working and were able to provide a resource for those looking to improve their physical and mental well-being—all the more necessary during this public health emergency. Perhaps the new motto should be Parks Make Life. In our little slice of heaven, they do.”

Their wide range of services keep me coming back for

Sportsplex USA offers adult and youth sports leagues, tournaments and corporate events all year long. Their sports pub offers ballpark favorite snacks and 8 draft beers on tap in their air conditioned space with a dozen TVs showing your favorite sports in season. For me, I see this well-oiled machine here for the long run. Why? Their core team is a home run. President, Bill Berghoff, General Manager, Eddie Vandiver and Director of Marketing & Sponsorships, Chris Vertrees make the dream team every business hopes for.

Pedego Santee is a locally-owned store where you'll be treated like family. They’re the region's foremost electric bike experts offering sales, rentals, accessories, and service. Pedego® stands for premium quality and local service. Here’s what they do for you: (1) Help you find the perfect electric bike for your needs, (2) Deliver your Pedego(s) ready to ride with no hassles, (3) Stand behind the product with parts and service in the future, and (4) Go above and beyond to make sure you’re delighted. You can stop by their shop and try a Pedego for free! These bikes will amaze you almost as much as their customer service and care for each client.

Some of the most prestigious awards this year were definitely among my favorite parts of the night as we awarded our Community Impact Award recipient, Jimmy’s Family Restaurant, the Business Legacy Recipient, Lloyd’s Collision & Paint Center, and of course, our Business of the Year recipient, Staump Music School. Please help support these local businesses as they continue to make our community an amazing place to eat, shop and play!

Santee Heroes

On April 26th the Santee Chamber hosted our Santee Heroes Celebration at Carlton Oaks Golf Club. This was an event we started back in 2019, just to have to hit the pause button on it over the past two years. Bringing this event back to life has meant a lot to our Chamber as it’s allowed for so much joy, placing these community heroes on a well-deserved pedestal. We honored 3 organizations (non-profit, community organization and place of worship) along with 9 special honorees ranging from teachers, first responders and volunteers and proudly announced the Santee Chamber’s 2021 Person of the Year, Dan Bickford. Check out the full list of honorees on Page 16.

17TSM |

We would like to formally thank Daniel Buksa, owner of Mission Realty Group. Daniel was asked to take this event and bring it back to life, and boy, did he deliver. He brought in partners like TDT Construction, Carlton Oaks and Jimmy’s Family Restaurant to host and cater, and once the date was set for the celebration, he never stopped working. He filled the room with honorees, sponsors, community leaders, friends, family, coworkers, you-name-it. His infectious positive energy made a good night into a great one and we are so glad to have him as part of our Chamber board. Thank you to all who came, contributed, were honored, and congratulations to all on a perfect Santee evening. For those who couldn’t join us, be sure to check out our Facebook page to see all the photos (shot by Lynda Marrokal).

is no stranger to public service. He grew up in a small town in Missouri and joined the Navy just after high school. He spent 6 years serving our country as a Sonar Supervisor on the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Barb (SSN-596) during the later years of the Cold War. After his career in the Navy, Mike joined the San Diego Police Department serving the public and retired after 28 years.

If you have known Mike for any period of time, it is hard to miss his genuine character. “Santee has always been a very special place to me and I enjoy contributing to the community I care so much about,” says Mike. During our interview, we talked about why he goes out of his way to support local businesses. “I believe supporting local Santee businesses is very important to our community’s overall success. Many of our local businesses are owned and operated by fellow Santee community residents who are deeply invested in Santee’s well-being and future.”, said Mike.

MY HOMETOWN

Today in his “retirement”, Mike is an avid golfer and has chosen to craft another career on the course. When I asked him why he chose to work at Carlton Oaks Country Club he explained, “Carlton Oaks has been a strong community partner for over 60 years and I’m proud to be involved in helping revitalize the course and property to ensure we remain a vital community hub well into the future. I’ve really enjoyed working with golf course architect Cary Bickler helping finalize the upgraded golf course layout, which will be fun and challenging to players of all ability levels.”

Thank you Mike for your service and for continuing to be involved in our community, supporting local businesses, and for your volunteer work in Santee!

AN INTERVIEW WITH LOCAL RESIDENT MIKE AIKEN

“ Working with police dogs was definitely one of the highlights of my career. ”

As part of our My Hometown article series, we caught up with Mike Aiken, Director at Carlton Oaks Country Club. You may have met Mike at a local community event, volunteering around town, at a Santee City Council Meeting, or on the golf course. Mike moved to Santee in the early 90’s as a young police officer and has been a contributor to our community ever since.

During our interview, he talked about some of the high points during his time on the police force. Mike shared, “The majority of my law enforcement career was spent as a Detective assigned to the Narcotic Task Force with the DEA, where I also had the privilege of working with and training narcotic detection K9s."

Miss Santee Program

SANTEESOCIALIZING

Networking Mixer at Carlton Oaks

The Santee Chamber hosts regular networking mixers to give members a chance to connect with other local companies for business-to-business opportunities. We’ve recently been hosted by Carlton Oaks Golf Club and Chick-Fil-A and we are looking forward to upcoming events at Lantern Crest and the Edgemoor Barn. Check our Facebook page for upcoming networking events.

Another year of service has come and (almost) gone for our Santee Royalty. Local resident, real estate agent and former Miss Santee, Lauren Gaines, has taken over this program previously held in a pageant style. The contestants, aged 10-22, now compete in an essay and speech competition. New titleholders will be crowned at the first summer concert on June 9th. Thank you for your reign, Althea Valdez, Ainsley Anderson and Maddie Vandiver.

Your résumé is the primary tool for communicating information about yourself to prospective employers. Résumés follow a fairly standard format, which include Header, Objective, Skills, Experience, and Education. The layout of your résumé will change depending on the amount of work experience you have, as well as your level of experience in the field for which you are applying. If you don’t have much experience in the specific career field you are applying for, it’s best to detail your past work experience and relate the skills required in your previous jobs to the new job.

Employment History or Work Experience:

Preparing Your Resume

Do not lie, and do not stretch the truth. Have quality copies made from a fresh master copy. Included below are explanations of each section of your résumé and a sample résumé outline.

The Objective or Qualifications Summary: Keep objective simple. Don’t write fluffy statements about your desire to change the world through this job. Try to convey why you should be hired—your desire, work ethic, etc. If you have solid qualifications for the job, list those instead.

The Header should contain full name and all necessary contact information. Provide at least one phone number. If you have a cell phone, give that number. Be wary of any e-mail address or website URL you provide as you may be judged on the content of your website or the name on your e-mail address.

Skills: If you have limited experience, list your basic job skills. For the more experienced, include as many of the skills that are required for the job as possible, including computer skills, knowledge of specific business software, even specific tasks that you know the job will require.

Education: Include full details on your education including degrees and awards received. Include any relevant training classes for previous jobs.

If you have experience, always include your most recent work experience at the top and include all relevant experience no matter how old. If you’ve had many job changes or short stints at jobs, be sure to explain why, but do not blame the job or previous employer.
