Traci Park Declares Victory in CD-11 Race Over Erin Darling

Traci Park has declared victory in the Los Angeles City Council District 11 race over Erin Darling in the election to replace Mike Bonin.

Following a November 17 vote count, Park held a 5,010 vote lead over Darling and issued a statement Thursday afternoon declaring victory.

“We feel confident our lead will stand and declare victory. It is gratifying that we received more votes thus far than any other L.A. city council candidate in the 2022 general election,” Park said. “I am humbled and honored that the constituents of CD11 have placed their trust and confidence in me to usher in a new era. Voters spoke convincingly that they want a different kind of leader and CD11 has sent a message that the Westside is done with ‘business as usual’ at City Hall.”

“From the beginning of our campaign, constituent services and an open-door policy have been a priority and my commitment has always been to represent the neighbors and stakeholders across the District. Whether you voted for me or not, I will work hard to represent you and be your voice on matters big and small at City Hall. We intend to bring about desperately needed change to make our schools, parks, and neighborhoods safer, and I will attack the homelessness crisis with the compassionate urgency required. We have a lot of work ahead,” Park added.

Darling also issued a statement conceding

the race to Park.

“While the margin’s been tightening, as we’ve been monitoring the votes, my team and I no longer see a path to victory. I couldn’t be prouder of the campaign we ran, or more heartened by the way the Westside showed up to support us - a last-minute, totally grassroots, at times shoestringbudget affair. This campaign brought together groups and neighbors across the district, who will continue to work together for compassionate and effective solutions to homelessness, stability for renters, and clean air and water,” Darling said. “I’d like to congratulate Traci Park - she ran recordsetting campaigns in both the primary and this general election. In the wake of the

rancor and divisiveness of the last two years and the shocking, damaging attitudes on the leaked tapes, the Westside, and LA in general, are in deep need of healing and unity that transcends race and economic status. I wish Councilmember-elect Park the very best in that crucial work.”

Park’s victory came the day after Karen Bass was declared winner in the Los Angeles Mayoral race over Rick Caruso. Also this week Robert Luna declared victory over incumbent Alex Villanueva in the LA County Sheriff Race. Voters also seem on course to approve County Measure A, which would give the LA County Board of Supervisors the power to remove the Sheriff for cause, with the measure currently picking up over 71 percent

of the vote. In the LA County Board of Supervisors race to replace the seat being left vacant by Sheila Kuehl for District 3 – which includes much of the Westside –West Hollywood Council Member Lindsey Horvath leads State Senator Bob Hertzberg by 4.48 percentage points.

At the statewide level, Governor Gavin Newsom holds a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Brian Dahle while at the federal level both Senator Alex Padilla and Congressman Ted Lieu each seem likely to hold onto their seats.

According to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, following Thursday’s vote tally 331,429 ballots are left to be counted.

Dr. Mitesh Popat Named Chief Executive

Officer of Venice Family Clinic

Dr. Popat will assume the CEO role on December 12. He succeeds Elizabeth Benson Forer, who has led the organization for 28 years and will continue to serve in an advisory role through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition.

Dr. Popat has been a practicing physician and senior leader at community health centers throughout his career. He has led Marin Community Clinics as CEO for the past five years and previously served as its chief medical officer.

Venice Family Clinic this month announced that Dr. Mitesh Popat will be its new chief executive officer, leading the nonprofit community health center that provides comprehensive care to more than 45,000 people in need from the Santa Monica Mountains through the South Bay.

Dr. Popat, who is currently the chief executive officer of Marin Community Clinics in Marin County, CA, has extensive experience as a community health executive, board certified family physician, public health expert and health care technology advisor.

The announcement of his appointment was made on behalf of the Venice Family Clinic Board of Directors by Joan Herman, Board Chair, and Bill Flumenbaum, Chair of the CEO Search Committee.

Venice Family Clinic’s Board of Directors selected Dr. Popat following a nationwide candidate search that began in March 2022 following Forer’s retirement announcement. The executive search firm, WittKieffer, vetted a diverse and extremely strong pool of candidates for the CEO search committee’s consideration.

“The board was impressed by Mitesh’s deep commitment to compassionate and equitable care, and his track record in designing that care around the needs of patients,” said Herman.

“In an ever-changing health care landscape, we are confident that he will bring vision and new ideas that will continue to build on the comprehensive and integrated model of care built under Liz Forer’s leadership. Mitesh has a keen understanding of the physical, social and

environmental factors that must be addressed as part of keeping our community healthy.”

“I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead Venice Family Clinic, which I have viewed as a gold standard in community health,” Dr. Popat said. “The health challenges that our patients at community health centers face have only become more complex, and

we must continue to find innovative ways to deliver care for people who are traditionally underserved. I look forward to working with the Venice Family Clinic team to build on the strong foundation that has been established over the past 52 years.”

Prior to his tenure at Marin Community Clinics, Dr. Popat served as the associate medical director of La Clinica De La Raza in Vallejo, CA. Dr. Popat holds a Doctor of Medicine and Masters in Public Health from Tufts University Medical School in Boston, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine. He served in the O’Connor Hospital/ Stanford Family Medicine Residency Program in San Jose. He also completed a two-year Health Care Leadership fellowship with the California Health Care Foundation and University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Popat has been a commissioner with Partnership HealthPlan of California, a managed MediCal plan which covers 550,000 people in 14 Northern California counties. He has a passion for how technology can help break down barriers to care and reach people in novel ways, and has served as an advisor to several health tech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Popat’s experience in community health extends globally and includes stints in India and South Africa, where he worked with local medical professionals to improve preventive care for diabetes patients and to describe the psychosocial factors surrounding HIV infection.

Column: Erin Darling Concedes Race to Traci Park to Succeed Mike Bonin in LA’s CD-11

In the most competitive and spirited race for Los Angeles City Council, newcomer Traci Park defied the odds and defeated fellow Venetian and attorney Erin Darling after finishing second in the June 8th Primary to reset her campaign and capture 52.94% of the vote in a race where as of Thursday evening some 85,000 residents casted votes.

As of 11/17, Park received 45,171 votes to Darling’s 40,101, a lead of 5,070 which seemed to be the trend for over week.

In a race with direct donations, city matching funds and independent expenditures totaling roughly $5 million dollars between the two, Park proved her ability as a first-time candidate to raise the lion’s share of the dollars in this open seat contest a clear advantage for her campaign.

Just a year ago both of these candidates were relative unknowns who defeated more experienced politico’s in a 8-person primary contest to reach the general election.

Park, a self-described moderate and former Republican was clearly the outsider with strong support from the law enforcement community as well as apartment owners, trade unions and several marquee endorsements from former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and California Treasurer Fiona Ma. Darling, the former Green Party member and progressive in the race leaned on his life-long residency here in Venice and former service on the Venice Neighborhood Council along with support from a multitude of Democratic clubs, public employee unions and elected officials such as Assembly member Tina McKinnor and California Senator Ben Allen of Santa Monica to make his case to voters.

But the 800lb gorilla in the room was the long shadow of the outgoing, twice-recalled incumbent Mike Bonin who endorsed Darling and many voters viewed the tenant right’s attorney in many cases as his clone. While Darling was running against Park, he was also forced to defend the record of an unpopular incumbent, especially on the core issues of homeless encampments and rising crime.

While Darling finished first in the 8-candidate primary garnering 22,939, his total in the general grew to just 40,101 or 17,162 additional votes. In contrast Park, the second place finisher received 19,168 in June, but saw her numbers swell to 45,171,

or 26,003 votes and nearly 10,000 more votes than her opponent.

Clearly, most of that Primary voted shifted significantly to Park with former candidates Mike Newhouse, Mat Smith and James Murez all endorsing her while Darling was unable to secure a single primary opponent endorsement with third and fourth place finishers Greg Good and Allison Holdorff-Polhill making no endorsement at all.

But the central issue of the campaign was homelessness, and Park pounded away at Darling’s support of many of the Bonin proposals that just didn’t work.

In many ways the Darling campaign was perceived as an extension of the Bonin agenda and it haunted him throughout the contest, Organizationally, the Park campaign outhustled the Darling effort as they plastered Venice with hundreds of signs where her support seemed the strongest. The 2021 Bonin Recall campaign was centered in Venice and many of the financial supporters of that effort naturally moved to the Park campaign.

At the end of the day, Darling was running against Park, but found himself defending the Bonin agenda which was just too much to overcome.

A strong public speaker, Park was well versed on the issues and spoke confidently and articulately on homelessness.

She was first in the race and her drive and determination was obvious and evident. Her personal style was contagious and defining Darling as Bonin 2.0 proved to be a winning formula.

Her drive and confidence was impressive for someone who never ran for public office.

This council race was the closest of those on the ballot and the last to be called. Ironically, the political landscape at City Hall has shifted to the left, and with Karen Bass as the new Mayor, Park has the unique opportunity to carve out a more moderate and solutions based agenda when it comes to the encampments and high crime.

Nick Antonicello is a longtime Venetian who has covered the race in CD-11 since 2020. A member of the Outreach and Oceanfront Committee’s of the VNC, He can be contacted via e-mail at nantoni@mindspring.com

Rose Avenue storefront planned for popular gluten-free bakery

The gluten-free French bakery Breadblok continues to open new locations this year and this time the new location will be in Venice as reported by What Now Los Angeles. The new site is at 512 Rose Ave and will be the fifth Breadblok storefront all told after the first location in Santa Monica and the other stores in Silverlake and Studio City. What Now Los Angeles has reported that another Breadblok location is in the works in Beverly Hills, but has not yet opened.

According to What Now Los Angeles, the new Breadblok in Venice will be a bakery location only similar to the Studio City store. Breadblok’s website states the philosophy of the bakery and says, “Breadblok is a gluten-free bakery for everyone. We use only the finest, purest ingredients to make artisan breads and pastries that satisfy the needs of every healthconscious lifestyle. Most importantly, we do it without sacrificing taste. Everything we make is gluten-free, but you wouldn’t know it. The

majority of our ingredients are 100 percent organic, and everything that comes out of our ovens is made with only the necessities, free of gums, soy, and refined sugars. As a bakery with generations of French Provencal influence, we’re dedicated to bringing you healthful indulgence of the utmost quality. People with dietary preferences love us, from gluten-free and paleo to vegan and beyond. But so does everybody else. Just the way it should be.”

The sisters who run the Breadblok brand, the Charliers, come from a French family that has eaten gluten-free for generations and first started baking gluten-free bread and pastries on their farm in Provence, France.

Maintain Natural Results With the SkinTight Experience

City Council Extends A Bridge Home Venice Lease

Lease extended to July 2023 following vote this week

Los Angeles City Council has approved a lease extension for Venice’s A Bridge Home homeless shelter.

This month, City Council approved a lease extension on the property until next July. The extension passed unanimously, though five council members were absent.

In the anti-aging world of aesthetics, it can be easy to overdo procedures that treat conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, collagen loss or stubborn fat.

Having a trusted provider can supersede those tendencies, especially when that provider offers new patient discounts, monthly specials and an experience unmatched on the Westside.

SkinTight offers injectables, laser resurfacing, skin rejuvenation and vitamin therapy among many other top-tier treatment services such as micro-needling and chemical peels. The “SkinTight” experience begins the moment you walk into the spa.

“Our commitment to educating our patients, exceptional patient care and producing ‘WOW’ results have contributed to our practice’s longlasting success,” said Leigh Godfrey, RN; SkinTight’s founder and owner. “We hold our work to the highest of standards, practice with integrity and truly stand by our work.”

Integrating years of experience into the practice, SkinTight believes in the active pursuit of a healthy and vibrant appearance by using cutting-edge technology to regenerate, rejuvenate and repair you own natural appearance.

“Our top-of-the-line lasers are used to address a wide range of skin conditions and skin types. For those who want to feel as great as they look, we also perform vitamin injections and IV drips,” Godfrey said.

Each visit starts with an individual consultation and a holistic assessment of your skin condition and personal goals with one of SkinTight’s medical professionals. Lifestyle choices are the basis for finding a beauty treatment developed to enhance the natural you.

If a patient is requesting unnecessary changes, SkinTight medical professionals tell it how it is.

“That’s what sets us apart from the industry,” Godfrey said. “Our experts specialize in performing full facial rejuvenation with injectables while not ‘overdoing’ it and maintaining natural results,” Godfrey added.

“Our providers never recommend more than their patients need.”

Godfrey began her nursing career in 1993 at Santa Monica Hospital as a telemetry nurse. While working in the emergency department, she realized the need for personal and dedicated care and moved to work with internationally known plastic surgeons doing post-surgery recovery care.

In 1999, Godfrey moved to private practice, recognizing a need to educate patients on their skin and skincare options. As a result of her conservative approach to enhance individual beauty, she has built her practice into what it is today: SkinTight Aesthetics.

“Our loyal patients have developed trust in our providers and know they will leave feeling better than when they walked in after taking our providers’ expert advice,” Godfrey said.

SkinTight is known for being client-focused through its industry education, as well. Inside of SkinTight’s state-of-the-art training room, the next generation of aesthetic providers learn from the best.

Over the last 20 years, Godfrey has mastered the artistry of facial injectables, safety, laser and skincare technology to share with her clients and new professionals in the field.

“We offer monthly informative events for clients focusing on specific treatments and continuing education training classes and seminars for new and established injectors. Our expert injectors – with decades of experience – are dedicated to passing along their skilled techniques to other professionals,” Godfrey said.

New patients receive a 10% discount on services and special change month per month that can include discounts on fillers, lasers and skincare products.

“Sometimes you have to see it to believe it,” Godfrey said.

Find the most up-to-date specials and a gallery of before and after photos at skintightaesthetics.com. SkinTight is open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m and with Saturday limited hours. The office is located at 11740 San Vicente Blvd. Suite 208, Los Angeles, Calif. 90049.

The 154-bed shelter opened in February 2020 on the 3.15-acre lot that takes up an entire block between Pacific Avenue and Main Street south of Sunset Avenue. The shelter sits on a former Metropolitan Transit Authority bus lot. MTA closed the lot in 2015 after receiving multiple offers from developers interested in the site.

Initially, the shelter was supposed to be open for only three years. Over the summer, however, Councilmember Mike Bonin introduced a motion calling for a lease extension with MTA and a sublease agreement with People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) to operate the shelter.

The lease extension has been met with opposition from many nearby residents.

“I live directly across the street from the Venice ABH - and while I admire their work and the home it has unhoused people, I am troubled by the lack of management from CD11 regarding the many safety issues that have arisen in our neighborhood. It seems fair to me that before the City extends a

lease for a gigantic public housing project, input from neighbors would be at least fair,” reads a letter to City Council from a Venice resident. “Councilmember Bonin and CD11 have refused to acknowledge the concerns of the public as to safety and sanitation, whilst ignoring the fact that these concerns directly affect the guests of the Venice Bridge House. The neighborhood has seen a gigantic spike in crime, and Councilmember Bonin has continually refused to sanitize the streets surrounding the ABH Venice that now contain close to 100 encampment tents.”

Another resident wrote to City Council over the summer asking to hold off on voting until a new City Council is elected. Last week Traci Park – who is more of a moderate compared to Bonin – won the election over Erin Darling.

“I’m begging you to reconsider the extension. This should not be voted on or decided by the current council - let’s wait until the new Councilperson for CD 11 is sworn in, and we can have a real conversation about how to address this incredibly important issue,” reads the letter.

14 Veterans Sue VA for Failing to Build Housing on West Los Angeles VA Campus

Lawsuit contends the agency not meeting legal obligation to house veterans at West Los Angeles VA campus

14 veterans are suing the Department of Veterans Affairs, alleging the agency has not lived up to its promise to build affordable housing on the West Los Angeles VA campus. The case is essentially a redo of a 2011 case that centered on how the federal government obtained the property West Los Angeles VA sits on. The land was donated to the government in 1887 by Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker, a wealthy widow, under the stipulation that it would serve as a home for veterans. The 2011 case alleged that the VA failed to meet its obligations, and a few years later the agency agreed to build 1,200 apartments for veterans.

Los Angeles veterans are now suing the VA again, saying the agency is not building the housing it promised. The lawsuit contends that this harms disabled veterans since the West Los Angeles VA sits in one of the priciest neighborhoods in Los Angeles County. Plaintiffs argue that if disabled veterans can’t afford rent in the vicinity of the VA’s West Los Angeles Medical Center, the government’s lack of affordable housing on the campus

Plans to Expand LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal Move Forward

Project will include eight passenger gates

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has more expansion plans in the works for the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at LAX as reported by Urbanize Los Angeles. LAWA’s plan for the Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSCS) project at LAX went before the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) on November 9 for a design review. This project is part of the West Gates Complex which opened last year.

LAX is undergoing a $14.5 billion capital improvement project which will include an automated people mover, the renovations of terminals and the construction of new passenger transportation centers.

The designer of this new project is Woods Bagot, and part of the statement to the CAC says, as quoted by Urbanize Los Angeles, “The design was developed to coexist sympathetically with both TBIT and MSC, both of which feature expressive repeating roof motifs. Given the much smaller scale of MSC South, particularly compared to MSC, expressing the modular nature of the building with repeating brise-soleil, inflected to respond the adjoining buildings, ensures a harmonious result that draws attention away

Having a natural flow from indoor living spaces to this incredible entertainer’s backyard is perfect for just that. The rooftop deck is huge—around 500 square feet, or around the size of a New York apartment, which isn’t saying much for an apartment but for a deck is tremendous. from the industrial bulk of the hangar beyond.”

The MSCS project is planned as an L-shaped structure with two stories and a total of eight gates that would be able to accommodate aircraft with narrow bodies only. The project will replace the eight-gate terminal to the east of Terminal 8 according to the LAWA website.

The project’s design has a “more modest look”, according to Urbanize Los Angeles, and connects to the concourse of the West Gates on its second floor. It will be made of pre-engineered pieces with exteriors made of glass, masonry, metal screens, and steel with aluminum sunshades dominating the design.

The projected completion of the project is 2025. Other planned passenger gate improvements are an expansion of Terminal

1 and a new Terminal 9

Boulevard.

$40 Million Loan Secured for Del Rey Apartment Development

Project will bring 49 units to 4339 and 4367 Berryman Avenue

Del Rey will have two new multifamily developments soon since Six Peak Capital and Grandview Partners acquired the necessary $40 million of construction financing to build the project as reported by Urbanize Los Angeles. They will be located at 4339 and 4367 Berryman and are estimated to be completed in 2024.

The site is at 4339 and 4367 Berryman Avenue and would consist of 49 apartments that would be further divided into 282 suite living units. Way Capital founder and managing director Malcolm Davies said via a press release, “The suite living projects are a modern solution to the ongoing housing shortage and availability crisis. year, a VA Office of Inspector General report found that several of these leases were out of compliance with the agency’s legal obligation to “principally benefit veterans and their families.” The inspector general called out the VA for completing only one building containing 55 units, out of the 480 projected in a four-year target. The inspector general found that “reasons for VA’s limited progress include required environmental impact studies, needed infrastructure upgrades, the need to establish a principal developer enhanced-use lease, and challenges faced by the developers in raising needed funds from public and private sources,”

The VA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
