Tragic Accident on Hwy 139 Claims Life of 9-YearOld, Injures Two Others

In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday morning the 16th, a collision on Highway 139, south of County Road 91, claimed the life of a 9-yearold Addilynne Sheila Mae Marie Schibbelhut and left two others with moderate to severe injuries. The accident occurred as the vehicle was heading north towards Klamath Falls.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene. Adam Lafferty, who was driving the vehicle suffered from moderate to severe injuries, and was airlifted by an air ambulance to receive critical care. Another juvenile who is 14, who also sustained moderate to severe injuries, was transported by vehicle to

a nearby hospital. Both individuals are expected to recover, according to initial reports.

Details of the collision are still under investigation. The tragic loss of Addi has sent waves of grief through the community. There is a meal train and gofundme that can be found through Modoc Records Facebook to help with raising funds and helping support the family.

Officials urge drivers to exercise caution, especially as traffic investigators work to determine the factors contributing to this accident.

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

So for two weeks in a row the Record printed letters regarding two opposing views about “climate change”, both views devoid of any real science. One letter spewed the typical anti-science, pseudo-science common to the leftist propaganda, and the other letter invoked “God” as to what controls climate.

You will notice that I always put the phrase “climate change” in quotation marks, and that’s because climate has always changed, and will always change independent of human activities. There is no such thing as steady-state climate, no such thing as climate homeostasis, period, no debate!! It’s been my experience that all those who keep spewing the leftist “climate change” nonsense have never actually done any indepth real science studies of climate dynamics. These people have no idea about the history of paleoclimates, they just ape the nonsense they’ve been spoon fed by the likes of Al “The Fraud” Gore, AOC, John Kerry, Greta Thunberg, and others of that ilk.

I have real climate scientist friends at NASA, CU Boulder, the Naval Postgraduate School, NOAA, MIT, and Oxford. Their combined research has shown that at best human activities (as in the use of fossil fuels) is maybe responsible for 18% of climate “forcing”, which means that 82%-plus are natural factors like solar activity, oceanic cycles (PDO, ENSO, etc,), the jet stream, Earth’s magnetic field, the Earth-Sun axial relationship, the “precession of the equinoxes”, and other factors that act over decades, centuries, and millennia. Climate is exceedingly complex, not conducive to sophomoric conclusions.

I will debate this topic with anyone, but when I throw down the proverbial gauntlet to the ill-informed tools of the leftist propaganda they never take me up on the challenge. So typical, so predictable.

Avoid Drinking Too Much Alcohol This Holiday Season

During the holidays, overindulging in alcohol and food is widely accepted. Throughout history, for as long as the holiday season has been celebrated in the United States, we are encouraged to have that extra drink or plate of food. Alcohol, for instance, is widely used in excess, and this has never changed.

Christmas Bazaar Bazaar

While our knowledge about moderation and the short and long-term health impacts of alcohol have changed for the better, most Americans face the obstacle of overindulgence during the holidays, deciding whether to avoid the temptation or go with the flow. There are countless reasons why alcohol is consumed in excess this time of year, and in many instances, people are encouraged to take part. Alcohol suppliers, liquor stores, bars, taverns, and restaurants tend to see an increase in alcohol

We, the Board of Directors of the Modoc Feline Humane Society are excited to announce our newly created 501(c)(3) non-profit organization! You may wonder - why start another humane society? The short answer is we have different priorities than the existing one.

We recognized the need to prioritize the sterilization and vaccination of free-roaming unowned community cats, (commonly called feral or stray) to reduce the cat overpopulation. We created this humane society to have the ability to pursue opportunities and policies toward this end. We exist to augment the hard work of the existing local humane society. Another difference is we don’t operate a shelter facility, which greatly reduces our overhead.

To reduce the cat overpopulation, we follow a proven strategy used worldwide to sterilize ALL of the cats living together in what is called a colony. Should a new cat show up, he or she should also be fixed right away. This way the colony is stabilized and no more kittens are born. This is

a key area where YOU can help our small group of volunteers. If you have read this far, you must have some interest in the cats in Modoc County. If you notice a cat or cats outside with no ear tip, that cat is most likely not fixed and is contributing to the population growth. Contact us at modocspayandneuter@ gmail.com or 760 8984373 and we can help you to get that cat altered.

Of course, there are indoor/outdoor pet cats without ear tips. We have several ways to determine if a friendly cat is indeed someone’s pet. If you have your cat microchipped (and registered!), this is the quickest and easiest way to ascertain ownership.

Inevitably, during the course of stabilizing a colony, kittens will be found that are then fostered in volunteer’s homes until adopted.

The services we offer are a Trap/Neuter/Return Program, low cost pet cat spay/neuter/vaccination vouchers, barn cat placement, fostering and adoptions.

Of course, even the most dedicated of volunteers cannot do this work alone. We need the community’s involvement. Here are

some ways you can help:

* Become a cat trapper! With some training, you will soon be on the cutting edge of helping to curb the outdoor cat overpopulation.

* Foster kittens or stray cats prior to adoption.

* Adopt a cat or kitten from us!

* Adopt sterilized, vaccinated and ear tipped barn cats for rodent control.

* Support our work by making a donation! Our first fundraiser is on Giving Tuesday, December 3rd. A generous supporter has pledged to match your gift 100% up to $5,000! Your tax deductible donation will go twice as far! Your gift can be made by mailing a check to Modoc Feline Humane Society (MFHS), c/o Karen Haines, P. O. Box 1503, Alturas, CA 96101. Thank you for caring! And join us soon on Facebook!

Modoc National Forest Begins Fall Prescribed Burning

The Modoc National Forest began fall prescribed burning last week and will continue into the coming weeks. Prescribed burns will take place on both the West and East sides of the forest, enhancing its overall health and safety. Communities nearby and those traveling on the nearest roadways may notice visible smoke during these burning events. We will keep you informed by sharing specific locations, dates, and times on our social media pages as they are confirmed. Remember, prescribed burning is a vital practice that helps maintain a healthy ecosystem and protects our environment. Your understanding and support are greatly appreciated.

Prescribed burns are most effective in the fall, winter and spring, when weather and fuel conditions are best to support

successful prescribed fire implementation. These critical fire management programs are designed to significantly reduce the risk of wildfires, protecting both communities and firefighters. Moreover, they help us achieve our resource management objectives. The timing and scope of each burn are carefully calibrated based on current weather conditions. While prescribed burns produce some smoke, our skilled fire managers carefully monitor weather patterns and smoke dispersion to mitigate

community impact. We prioritize public health by consistently assessing air quality to ensure it meets federal and state standards. Each burn adheres to a meticulously crafted burn plan that considers essential factors such as temperature, humidity, wind, and vegetation moisture. Only trained personnel are authorized to ignite the fire, either manually or using specialized equipment. Ultimately, the precise timing of each burn reflects various critical factors, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

Shop Local to Find Unique Gifts, Support Local Economy

Gift giving is in

Some start with a list of their loved ones and think about what they would uniquely love to be gifted. Others shop around until the perfect gift on the shelf, or the virtual cart, tugs on your heart.

However easy or hard the gift-giving process is for you, shopping locally has many rewarding benefits and could turn into a more impressive and special gift for your loved one. Handcrafted items, items distinct the shops and stores in Modoc County and surrounding areas, not only uplift the local economy, but they speak on the generosity of the gift giver. Uniquely sold items, not easily found online or manufactured cheaper through ecommerce stores, are more thoughtful, and often unreplaceable in the heart of the receiver. As gift giving season nears

and thoughts of holiday celebrations make way, consider shopping locally for these reasons:

UPLIFTING LOCAL

ECONOMY

Saving on shipping fees is a plus, but one reason to shop local is for the greater good of the community. By spending money in your local community, you are boosting the local economy. The entrepreneurs and business owners in and surrounding Modoc County benefit from each transaction. On top of building relationships in your community, you are supporting the advancements of families that depend on that business for income.

SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS

It’s almost mindless to open a cart on Amazon, or Temu, or the TikTok shop, and pick a number of gifts for your loved ones, already packaged awaiting a layer or two

or your favorite wrapping paper.

Shopping in stores, however, you may find items that are unique to local artists or businesses that have spent time and years honing their crafts to deliver specialty goods. In a sense, shopping locally is a way to show gratitude and support the locality of these goods — found at a boutique gift shop or local goods store near you. Another perk of shopping locally is the quality of the items. Often, products on shelves in local stores are made with higher quality than those found online.

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Shopping locally can positively impact the environment. Buying goods locally reduces your carbon footprint as you forfeit transmission emissions needed to reach your doorstep. Local producers and business

owners are more likely to prioritize sustainable practices, therefore supporting local efforts to protect the environment.

CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS WITH LOCAL FOOD

Producers in northern California delight in

knowing that locally produced food is prepared for the thousands of people who are planning holiday celebrations. Local food and grocery shopping can ensure a tasteful celebration while your loved ones enjoy the company of each other.

This holiday season, remember the local food entrepreneurs, producers and stores that are preparing to make your upcoming holiday celebrations one to remember.

Born on March 11, 1943, in Sacramento. Timothy was the son of Thomas J. McMahon and Teresa Hardesty.

Timothy’s life was defined by service — to his country, his family, his patients, and his faith. He graduated from Alturas High School in 1960, then went on to Santa Clara University, followed by St. Louis University School of Medicine. After completing his education, Timothy served as a battalion surgeon in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, providing care to soldiers in difficult and dangerous conditions.

In 1968, Timothy married the love of his life, Susan Antoinette Tansey, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. They went on to raise four children — Timothy, Rebecca, Christian, and Daniel — and shared a life full of love and adventure. Timothy was later blessed with nine grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy and pride throughout his life.

After his military service, Timothy completed a dermatology residency at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco. He went on to a long and distinguished career as a dermatologist at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento, where he practiced for 32 years.

From 1981 to 2006, he served as Chief of Dermatology, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and excellence in patient care. For 42 years, Timothy was also a member of the UC Davis Department of Dermatology Volunteer Faculty, mentoring and shaping the careers of countless future dermatologists.

Beyond his medical career, Timothy was deeply passionate about the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and skiing, and he passed along this love of nature to all of his children. Whether he was on a family camping trip or enjoying a quiet day on the water, the outdoors brought him peace and fulfillment.

Timothy was also a devoted parishioner of St. Mel Church in Sacramento, where he was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His faith was an essential part of his life, and he found great joy in serving others through his church community.

Timothy’s family, friends, and colleagues will remember him for his unwavering kindness, his sense of humor, and

his integrity with which he lived his life. He was a man of quiet strength, dedicated to making the world a better place for those around him. His legacy of love, service, and commitment to family will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Timothy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan; his children, Timothy, Rebecca, Christian, and Daniel; his nine grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Timothy’s life will be held on November 15, 2024, at 10:30 AM at St. Mel Church in Fair Oaks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Timothy’s memory to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mel Conference.

Modoc Braves Fall to Bulldogs in Playoff Battle, Ending Season on a High Note

The Modoc Braves’ playoff dreams came to an end Friday night as they faced the Los Molinos Bulldogs in a high-scoring battle. Despite the Braves’ determined effort, Los Molinos’ powerhouse offense proved too strong, handing Modoc a 68-37 defeat. This loss marks Modoc’s biggest point deficit since midSeptember and concludes their season with a 6-5 record. Modoc’s offense showcased its signature grit, with running

backs Sutton Cockrell and Lewis Crumwell consistently pushing through Los Molinos’ defense. Quarterback Landon Malcolm connected with receivers for crucial touchdowns, but the Braves were unable to keep pace with the Bulldogs’ relentless scoring.

“We played tough against a very strong team. I’m proud of how our athletes handled themselves this season and in this game. They’ve left it all on the field.”

While the season ended earlier than hoped, several Modoc players earned league honors for their outstanding contributions.

sales. Alcohol advertising during the holidays is undoubtedly geared to play off our emotions.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), nine in ten Americans say that concerns such as not having enough money, missing loved ones, and family conflict cause them to stress this time of year. Financial concerns were the most common reason for stress, as 58% of U.S. adults say they spend too much money or do not have enough money to spend.

Unfortunately, close to two in five adults who experience stress during the holiday season said they use harmful coping mechanisms, such as alcohol or drugs. According to a Modoc County Community Health Needs Assessment, the

percentage of adults who report excessive drinking, including binge drinking or heavy drinking is significantly higher in Modoc County than for the state overall, 22% compared to 18%.

The average person will admit that the holiday season is a pleasant and joyous time of year. However, many people struggle with addiction and mental health issues, and this becomes exacerbated because of the constant pressure to overindulge in holiday cheer.

There are strategies and resources to help. For example, Modoc County Health Services offers a support line at 1-800-6994880 or 1-530-233-6312. Alternatively, you can text or call 988, the crisis lifeline, to talk to someone.

During the holidays, pay attention to your feelings and develop a plan for when you are feeling stressed, sad, or lonely. Avoid alcohol and drugs; while this is easier said than done for some people, the holiday season presents challenges that can trigger the use of alcohol, for example. It’s wise to recognize these triggers and avoid alcohol. If you are struggling, focus on practicing selfcare and remaining connected with your friends, family, or local community. Feelings can amplify for some people this time of year, making it necessary to support others. Attend your local faith community, support group, community centers, or local meetups. Most importantly, know when to seek help. This can be especially important for

anyone already struggling with a substance use disorder or mental health issues.

Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. While society tells us to indulge in certain things and throw care and caution to the wind, we can choose not to listen. Focus on the more authentic meanings of the holiday season and encourage others to do the same.

community impact.

Remember, prescribed burning is a vital practice that helps maintain a healthy ecosystem and protects our environment. Your understanding and support are greatly appreciated. Prescribed burns are most effective in the fall, winter and spring, when weather and fuel conditions are best to support successful prescribed fire implementation. These critical fire management programs are designed to significantly reduce the risk of wildfires, protecting both communities and firefighters. Moreover, they help us achieve our resource management objectives. The timing and scope of each burn are carefully calibrated based on current weather conditions.
