Ormat Evaluating Geothermal Potential In Surprise Valley, Says Project Is In Early Stages

Ormat Technologies Inc., a Reno, Nevada-based geothermal company, has begun early-stage work to evaluate whether Surprise Valley could support a future geothermal energy project.

The company said it is in the first phase of exploration, gathering data to determine whether a viable and sustainable geothermal resource exists. Ormat emphasized the work is preliminary and that any decision to move forward would require additional studies, a full environmental review and opportunities for public input.

The CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit, in collaboration with the Modoc Fire Safe Council and Alturas Elementary School, recently led a vital Fire Prevention Week program for local students. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” students received handson training inside the

“Geothermal development is a careful, multi-year process,” the company said in a statement, noting timelines from early exploration to a potential commercial facility often span five to 10 years depending on findings, permitting and environmental requirements.

Surprise Valley and Modoc County have a long history of geothermal activity, with exploration efforts dating back decades. Ormat, which says it has more than 60 years of experience exploring, building and operating

Ormat said its facilities use binary technology intended to minimize environmental impacts. The approach relies on a closed-loop process in which geothermal fluids are cycled through the system and returned underground.

The company said it understands water protection is a top concern for residents and ranching operations. Ormat said geothermal wells target deep hot zones far below domestic and agricultural aquifers and that state and federal regulations require protections for groundwater zones during drilling.

The company also said its facilities are air-cooled and do not rely on groundwater to generate power.

Alturas Road Repairs Limited During Winter Months

Veterans Day is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. This November, Modoc Record is preparing a special guide dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the nation’s armed forces.

“Road repairs during the winter months are limited by materials and weather conditions,” according to City of Alturas Public Works Director Warren Farnam.

The guide will feature profiles of local veterans, community events, support resources and ways for residents to get involved. It will be printed and distributed throughout Modoc and Lassen counties.

Submissions can be emailed to info@modocmedia.com.

According to Farnam, there have been recent pothole repairs.

Veterans Day is not only about honoring the past — it’s about recognizing the ongoing contributions of veterans in our neighborhoods, workplaces and families.

Alturas City Council members met last Tuesday to discuss several important issues, including dangerous potholes throughout the Alturas community.

Farnam said crews currently use a winter-mix asphalt that is softer and less durable, making repairs temporary. While potholes are still repaired as needed, large-scale paving projects are not scheduled until warmer months.

plan will be developed closer to spring, Farnam said, when weather conditions improve. Funding levels, crew availability and the supply of asphalt will determine how much work can be completed and when.

The primary paving season is expected to begin in the summer, when longerlasting asphalt can be used for permanent repairs.

The guide aims to provide both inspiration and practical resources, ensuring local stories of courage and commitment are remembered and celebrated.

Modoc Performing Arts Theater will be presenting their annual evening With MPAT: “Cornfield of Dreams or the villain was a laughing stalk!” on January 31” at the Veteran’s Hall. This dinner theater melodrama is MPAT’s annual fundraiser. “Cornfield of Dreams” by Rachel Davidson is produced with special arrangements with Pioneer Services, Inc.

Get ready for the corniest play this side of the Mississippi. Pop and Ma Cornwell, along with their adopted daughter Little Sweet Pea, are beside themselves with worry. Colonel Kernal’s cornfields are inexplicably drying up, so they have no corn for their recipes at the Corn Cafe. To make matters worse, the new banker in town, Ira Fuse, is demanding payment on their late mortgage! Lucky for them, Major Major comes to town scouting a new location for a military fort. Building the fort in Corelle would be a huge boon for the Corn Cafe and General General’s General Store (and especially the lovestruck Little ‘Sweet Pea}, but it won’t happen unless they can solve the problem with the water shortage.

Let me tell you a true story from my childhood on the Monterey Peninsula. At age 10 just after my family moved back to Monterey from Lake Tahoe where we lived for two years while my dad helped develop Squaw Valley for the 1960 Winter Olympics, a family from New York moved in down the street from us. They moved to California because they thought the gold rush was still going on. Yep, I kid you not, that’s how ignorant they were of California history.

Modoc County Offers Financial Incentives to Reduce Wood Smoke Pollution

Modoc County residents may qualify for financial assistance to replace or permanently retire older wood-burning stoves and fireplaces through a statefunded air quality program designed to reduce wood smoke pollution.

The program is administered locally by the Modoc County Air Pollution Control District as part of the AB 617 Wood Smoke Reduction Program. It offers incentives for residents to replace older wood- or pelletburning devices with cleaner heating options, including electric stoves and heat pumps.

According to the California Air Resources Board, air pollution affects millions of Californians daily, harming public health, agriculture, property and the environment. Residential wood burning has become an increasing source of air pollution statewide, particularly during winter months when heating use rises and cold, calm conditions cause smoke and other pollutants to linger near ground level.

The California Air Pollution Control Officers Association reports that smoke from wood burning contains a complex mixture of gases and fine and coarse particulate matter, as well as harmful pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, acrolein and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Health effects range from eye and respiratory irritation to more serious outcomes, including reduced lung function, bronchitis, asthma complications, adverse birth outcomes, cardiovascular impacts and premature death.

The program is open to

Modoc County residents who currently use a wood or pellet stove, insert or fireplace.

Low-income households, residents of disadvantaged communities and those living on tribal lands may be eligible for higher incentive amounts.

Standard-income households may receive up to $2,500 to replace a wood, pellet, gas or propane stove or insert, covering up to 85% of eligible costs. Electric stoves or inserts are eligible for up to $2,500, and electric heat pumps may qualify for up to $2,000, with both options covering 100% of eligible costs.

Residents who qualify as low-income or who live in disadvantaged communities or on tribal land may receive up to $7,000 toward the replacement of a wood, pellet, gas or propane stove or insert, an electric stove or insert, or an electric heat pump.

Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis until exhausted. An IRS W-9 form is required.

For more information, contact the Modoc County Air Pollution Control District at 202 W. Fourth St. in Alturas or call 530-233-6401. The program is funded through California Climate Investments and administered in coordination with the California Air Resources Board and the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association.

Incentives are also available for residents who choose to permanently retire their existing devices without replacement. Eligible participants may receive up to $500 for retiring a wood or pellet stove or insert, or up to $1,000 for retiring a fireplace. Applicants must submit photographs of their existing heating devices and use an authorized contractor with the required city or county permits. Old devices must be permanently disabled and disposed of, and replacement devices must be maintained for up to 10 years. If a heat pump is installed and the original device is retained, the old device may be used only during emergency power

June Gwendolyn Perry

June Gwendolyn Perry passed away peacefully in Cedarville, CA on January 12, 2026, at the age of 99. June lived a full, adventurous life. A native of Michigan, June was born on May 31, 1926, as one of four children. Her journey took a transformative turn in January of 1949 when at 22 years of age the family relocated to California.

June found work in San Francisco at the Anglo London Paris Bank as a key punch operator for the General Ledger. June always loved art and drawing, and in 1956, after hearing about a draftsman training program at Mare Island Naval Shipyard she signed up and completed the 18-month program for skills in naval architecture. Upon graduating, she took a month off and went to Europe on a tour of 6 countries.

After working at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, she went on to work at the Naval Air Station. While there, a recruiting officer from the Radiation Lab in Livermore, CA came looking for experienced draftsman, so she signed up. It was a different form of drafting in the Propulsion Department. She found it very interesting, and saw where things were deployed and tested, and stood where atomic bombs were sent off. Her assignment was working on the nuclear power ram jet engine, involving trips to the Nevada Test Site and other facilities.

After this hitch of work, she went back to where her training began as she was now qualified for a higher position as a GS-9 Engineering Technician. She was promoted twice after that. Her work was now on submarines, and when new updated equipment needed to be installed her assignment was to travel to the various shipyards, go aboard and find a location for installation. As a newspaper article from 1971 notes: “Most female employees of the Shipyard work behind a desk, but June Perry of Design is one of a growing number of women in a job predominately male. A GS-10 engineering

technician…June gets away from her drafting board to visit ships and submarines… in the course of her duties.”

Her last assignment was on the USS Nautilus, the first U.S. Nuclear Submarine, in Groton, Connecticut, where she had lunch with the officers in their quarter.

While working days, June attended the College of Marin at night for a course in architectural drafting. In her free time, she was an avid hiker and went on backpacking trips, hikes and kayak trips with the Sierra Club. This was a whole new experience for her. As an intermediate rated kayaker, she paddled down the Sacramento River for three days, carrying all her provisions. She also built a home on Cobb Mt, CA for weekend getaways that she enjoyed for 7 years.

In 1972, she took some time off and went to Boise, ID for a month, and on her way back she took a detour into Cedarville to visit her friend Arlene Reynolds. She fell in love with the area, decided to retire and stay. She stayed at the Bonner House while she drew up plans for her home. A local contractor framed it, and June finished the rest, sheetrock, brickwork, cupboards and all.

Word got around June was a draftsman and her talents were soon recognized, and she was invited to prepare plans for the city of Alturas, Modoc County and for individuals in need of house plans, including plans for the Surprise Valley Medical Clinic and the Modoc County Museum.

June was a creative spirit, indulging in her hobby of building things. She cherished the simplicity of

small-town life, at times sharing it with a beloved cat. In her leisure time, she continued to enjoy her outdoor activities along with being an avid fisherwoman and playing cards with friends. She was known to have hiked into Patterson to fish with her friend Pat Ash, and in 1993 her homemade “Basque Red” wine made from Gerlach grapes won Best of Show at the Modoc County Fair.

A community-minded individual, June was a member of The Eastern Star, Garden Club Sierra, and Valley 50. She was also a dedicated associate member of the Community Church of Cedarville.

June was preceded in death by her mother, Allie Winter Perry; father, Arthur Perry; brothers, William Perry of Stockton, CA and Dwaine Perry of Troy, Michigan; and sister, Clarabel Grist of Eustis, FL.

June’s legacy is one of kindness, creativity and a deep love for the simple joys of life. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral Services will occur Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Cedarville Community Church, immediately followed by graveside services and then a catered luncheon gathering at the Community Church Hall. Memorial donations may be made in June’s honor to Surprise Valley Community Church, P.O. Box 187, Cedarville, CA 96104, High Plateau Humane Society (HPHS) at P.O. Box 1383, Alturas, CA 96101 (or on their website at https:// highplateauhumanesociety. blogspot.com/) or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Attorney names victim services facility dog Solari

The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office has named its new victim services facility dog Solari, a young Labrador retriever that will work alongside staff to provide comfort to people navigating the court process.

The office announced the name this week in a public introduction of the dog, which is expected to begin appearing at

the district attorney’s office this spring as she continues training. Solari is Latin for “solace,” meaning to comfort, console, soothe and ease, according to the announcement. The office said the name also evokes “the sun” and a “bright place.”

The District Attorney’s office thanks all community members who submitted name suggestions.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
