Session Descriptions

Session 1 • 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.

Amplifying Voices: SF Students Tell Us What Helps Them Succeed • Lyceum

Learn how your “See Something, Say Something” reports are processed through our Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and how it has facilitated interventions such as threat aversion, a culture of care, and student support for success. Highlighted is the incorrect text from another session. Here’s what it should be: Learning from and collaborating with students to promote their success embodies what we do here at Santa Fe. Listen as students, through survey data and in their own voices, tell us of their challenges, their experiences, and what helps them to succeed. We amplify student voices to help guide and shape our teaching practices and institutional processes, thus creating a more responsive, inclusive, and effective learning environment for everyone.

Bridging the Gaps in Student Wellness • L-35

This session will discuss the challenges of college students, the development and adoption of practical strategies for supporting them, and ways to strengthen collaboration across campus resources. It will equip attendees with tools to effectively and compassionately communicate with students, work together with campus resources, and recognize the importance of personal wellness.

We will consider how to break down silos and cultivate a culture of collaboration. Tangible suggestions for garnering support and connection across different groups and departments will be discussed.

Bridges to Communication • L-36

Augmentative Interspecies Communication (AIC) utilizes pre-recorded speech buttons which enable animals to communicate with humans. Unlike natural animal communication, AIC offers animals a new way to interact with humans. Through a modeling process, animals are taught the meanings of specific words, allowing them to use those words to make requests or describe situations. While AIC has been successfully used with domestic pets like dogs and cats, it has not yet been widely implemented in zoos. In this session, zookeepers will introduce a soundboard with buttons that align with safety protocols. The aim is to teach animals useful concepts that enhance the interactions and well-being of animals and their caretakers.

Canvas “Hacks” – Rubrics, New Quizzes, etc. • C-119

Creating rubrics is one way to assist with clear instructions for assignments. Our instructions should help students demonstrate what they have learned rather than how well they can interpret your instructions. Additionally, New Quizzes can save you time on creating questions. This gives you more time to analyze questions that a large percentage of the class answered incorrectly. Why did so many students give an incorrect response? What might I do differently? Writing straightforward rubrics, coupled with using New Quizzes to inform your teaching will help students master your course content.
