With Your KHTS Morning and Afternooon DJs KHTS AM 1220 has been Santa Clarita’s “Hometown Station” since 1989. After changing ownership a few times, today the station has become the vibrant voice of the community. As the only local radio station in town, its repertoire includes a mix of news, traffic, sports, adult contemporary hits and themed shows from local businesses, such as our own “The Gazette Radio Hour” every Friday from 1-2 p.m. KHTS also has a knack for hiring talented SCV residents as radio personalities. Two of the most colorful individuals are George Cummings and T-Katz. Tune to the station on weekday mornings and let George soothe you through the morning commute. Listen in with T-Katz for your drive home and let her eccentric persona help you wind down after a long day. You can also catch the lively duo every Friday at noon when they host “Friday Matinee.” During the weekly show they share with their listeners interesting happenings in town and deliver live interviews with a bevy of guests. Both George and T-Katz are fantastic in their own right, offering personal perspectives on local and national news in their respective time slots. Charismatic to the core, and quite different, personality-wise, they shine alone and as a team. So, read on, and get to know the morning and afternoon voices of the SCV a little better. photo courtesy of KHTS

DJs Wake Up with KHTS Morning DJ George Cummings Morning commutes can be the absolute worst; the traffic here in town alone is enough to drive someone crazy. This is why it is important to find a relatable morning DJ who will get you through to the afternoon. For many Santa Clarita residents, that DJ is George Cummings, radio personality for the Morning Show at KHTS. So, grab a cup of your favorite morning coffee and let’s take a moment to delve into George’s story. Aside from the music blaring from it, George never had much interest in radio in his youth. He stumbled upon a broadcasting program at the college where his girlfriend (now wife) attended, and before he knew it, he was going to school full-time. George soon became program director of his college radio station, as well as the morning DJ. After completing his courses, he needed to find a steady income that would support him and his new wife, and a full-time, unpaid intern position at a Los Angeles radio station wasn’t going to cut it. He was hired by a mobile DJ company after impressing them with his college radio bits and this ended up turning into an eight-year career. At the same time, he also worked at several odd jobs and eventually started his own web marketing company, which is still active today. There was a 20-year time gap from when George graduated college and his current gig at KHTS, but it all goes to show that if you’re good at something you will always find your way back … and for the past four years, he has been doing exactly that. “It was serendipity, actually, that drew me back into radio. My wife, Margie, and I were announcing the SCV 4th of July parade, when Robin Strickland walked by to say hello. Robin had worked for the station for several years, and she mentioned to me that there was an opening to fill the morning show DJ slot. I sent Jeri Seratti-Goldman a resume and hastily prepared aircheck (Sort of an audio resume, for lack of a better term), and scored an interview,” George explains. It wasn’t smooth sailing from there, though considering how long he had been away from the microphone, there was some rigorous interview activity to follow. George continues, “Jeri wasn't overly impressed with what she heard in my aircheck, but I somehow won her over during the interview ... at least enough to get a one-hour show from 9-10 a.m. to start. She thought I'd been away from radio too long and needed to get my "chops" back. I slowly continued to win her over, and within a few months took over the helm as the Hometown Morning Show host.”

Take an Afternoon Drive with KHTS DJ T-Katz For many of us with local commutes, we have often tuned into KHTS on our drives home and heard the voice of a quirky female DJ coming through the speakers. Broadcast radio is all about voice and personality, but this week The Gazette will be putting a face to a familiar voice and giving you a bit of insight into her life outside of the station. T-Katz is so much more than the host of your afternoon drive. She is a mother, an artist, an author, a philanthropist, and overall, just an outstanding female powerhouse. T-Katz has been the Afternoon Drive-Time personality for over a year now, but has also co-hosted the “Friday Matinee” for almost two. One Friday afternoon she was doing impersonations for the KHTS staff and the Station Manager offered her the Afternoon Drive position. She thought he was joking, but the next day she got a call from station owner Jeri SerratiGoldman with a serious offer. “As a long-time actress, singer, writer and someone who never met a microphone she didn’t like … I was officially intrigued,” says T-Katz. “So, I started training. Station Manager Kyle Jellings and 30-plus year veteran radio personality Verna McKay led me through my paces for weeks. For me, the talking isn’t the hard part of the job: timing the log, juggling the interviews, researching and updating traffic reports every 10 minutes (on RAINY days, especially) and taking traffic tip phone calls … holy motherof-pearl, it’s challenging! But, it’s also the most wonderful thing I’ve ever done.” She moved to Santa Clarita in 1995 after searching for the right place to raise a family. After extensive research (a binder three inches thick, to be exact), she chose the SCV. T-Katz explains, “The SCV deal was sealed the day I sat in a diner over breakfast and read some local information—every single day and night there were opportunities to serve the community here: academic, civic, spiritual, charitable … you name it! I’d never seen anything like it. There was definitely something in the Santa Clarita water and I wanted to be part of it. Right away, I became involved with a mom’s group (Mothers Unlimited, Inc.) and I’m still friends with women I met from the first Halloween events at the Sheriff ’s station and Lombardi Ranch. Over the years, I worked as a volunteer at my children’s schools, whether at the academic level, arts and/or sports, and loved every minute of it. I’ve been a music and performance coach to hundreds of kids over the years, and I’ve been grateful to have their families become a part of mine.”

George’s artistic inspiration goes back to his childhood, when he remembers his mother always playing the radio at home. He soon learned that he could not relate to any of the personalities, therefore the music was somewhat lost on him. It wasn’t until he was 15 that he discovered KROQ, which was back then a small, unknown, punk rock station.

So, what can KHTS listeners expect from T-Katz on the Afternoon DriveTime radio show? Local news, traffic, weather, sports, “Entertainment Tonight Radio Minute” with Mary Hart, interviews and, of course, your favorite music, but what makes the show unique is the charisma and soul she brings to the radio. She humbly sums it up in one word—heart.

“KROQ is a powerhouse in radio now, but back then, they were really the first radio station to have DJs who sounded like regular people,” says George. “They had a ‘relatability’ factor that was missing from other stations. I always think back to ‘Jed the Fish’ for my inspiration. He was off-beat without trying to be funny, and still very entertaining.”

“For me,” she explains, “every aspect of what I’m asked to give to our hometown (traffic, news stories, events) needs to have a human heartbeat attached. [My listeners] are going to hear my heartbreak, my sympathy and my feelings on a topic—no matter what it is.”

A typical weekday for George starts at 4 a.m., allowing him a solid hour for what he refers to as “Zen time.” Then, between 6 and 9 a.m., he is on the air bringing listeners updates on happenings in the Santa Clarita Valley. For new listeners, they can expect a mix of traffic, news, information, entertainment, interviews, and music from the Hometown Morning Show. George’s goal?

You can catch T-Katz Monday through Friday from 3-7 p.m. on KHTS AM 1220.

“To get you up, get you out, and get you to work while keeping you in a fairly good mood. I do my best to keep the show light, fun and informal, but still informational,” he says. Catch The Hometown Morning Show with George Cummings on KHTS 1220AM Monday – Friday from 6am-9pm.

My Chance to Gobble At this time of Thanksgiving and the approaching holidays, I hope you are enjoying time with family and friends. We are blessed as a nation and a people to live in a great country, state, and in the City of Santa Clarita. I was deeply honored several weeks ago when the publisher of the Santa Clarita Gazette, Doug Sutton, asked me to do occasional commentary for this newspaper. Until this year, I had largely admired the publication from afar. Whenever I passed a local news rack I picked up the Gazette because I enjoy reading Doug’s Rant. Doug’s “devil may care” style of commentary has a great appeal to me, and I like seeing the other features, and to learn about the goods and services provided by the local business owners in the Santa Clarita Valley. The reader of the Gazette gets a real feel for the pulse of the Santa Clarita Valley. This past spring I became involved in the effort to stop Measure S, the billboard development agreement between the City and Metro. After the first reading of the ordinance in February, I never thought that it

would go all the way to a November Ballot Measure. During the year I began to admire the news reporting of the issue by Gazette reporters Jessica Boyer and Josh Heath. I saw them in the front row at the City Council meetings, talked with them occasionally, and admired the accuracy of reporting the rather complex underlying issues of the deal. When the final weekend of the campaign rolled around in late October, the No on Measure S Committee had to decide where to spend the last dollars of our limited budget. I insisted that we take advantage of a nice package offered by the Gazette that gave us an ad in the upper right section of the front page and the entire second page to present the bullet points. I did so, because I sensed that a reader of the Gazette would have an independent mind and respond to our fact-based argument on Election Day. During the campaign it became apparent to me that it is of vital importance to have an independent news and opinion source like the Santa Clarita Gazette. The local daily newspaper’s reporters did an admirable

Lean to the Left

Executive Privilege

President Barack Obama announced an executive action regarding immigration last week, and the Right chose to skewer him for using his executive privilege. Illegal? Unconstitutional?

Not only was President Obama’s action legal, this is part of the job. And not only do I defend his decision, I thought his speech was eloquent, clear and convincing.

Take a look in the mirror, critics on the Right.

His directive seeks to defer deportation for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, parents of U.S. citizens who are themselves undocumented, and children who are permanent residents. He is offering innocent individuals the chance to gain work status—not inviting criminals to stay in our country.

President Obama has signed 191 executive orders during his presidency. George W. Bush signed 291 executive orders (that’s 100 more than Obama). Richard Nixon? He signed 346. How about everybody’s favorite, Ronald Reagan? He signed 381. Remember George H.W. Bush’s “Family Fairness” immigration plan? Do you also remember how ludicrous his idea of “voluntary departure” sounded? President Obama has signed the fewer executive orders per year (33 and a half, roughly) than every single president since Grover Cleveland, according to the American Presidency Project. You know how many Republicans that includes? (Hint: a lot)

From the opening, he put it out there—said things we can actually all agree with, for instance: “But today, our immigration system is broken—and everybody knows it.” There was sanity in what he was saying. It was like this: “These people—our neighbors, our classmates, our friends–-they did not come here in search of a free ride or an easy life. They came to work, and

job of reporting on Measure S; however, they have close ties to City Hall that seemed to cloud their judgment, so they endorsed a Yes vote. SCVTV is a local media outlet that receives subsidies from governmental agencies (city and school districts). To our shock and dismay, SCVTV took no interest in hosting a debate. The local radio station has a moratorium on political issues near the election and guards the airtime carefully. The No on S Committee could not afford to advertise on the air or on the radio station’s web site. At this time it appears that No on S will prevail when the official results are released on November 28 by the County Clerk. In future weeks I plan to comment on the underlying issues that were exposed over the year and should concern Santa Clarita residents. Steve Petzold is a local realtor and community commentator.

By Sylvia Turner study, and serve in our military, and above all, contribute to America’s success.” The most powerful statement in President Obama’s speech, I thought, was: “Are we a nation that tolerates the hypocrisy of a system where workers who pick our fruit and make our beds never have a chance to get right with the law?” And one comment should have resonated with Republicans: “Are we a nation that educates the world’s best and brightest in our universities, only to send them home to create businesses in countries that compete against us? Or are we a nation that encourages them to stay and create jobs here, create businesses here, create industries right here in America?” Let’s at least come together at square one: the system is broken and everybody knows it.

And to the Republic, For Which it Stands United States of America is done a certain way or operates in a certain way because we live in a democracy. This is not true, in that we actually live in a republic, and the very definition of a republic versus a democracy is what separates us from the rest of the world, although some would rather you not know or understand that basic fact.

It seems our society has misrepresented, and outright forgotten, some very basic principles of our history, and none is more apparent than the most basic one of all. As the greatest social experiment known to the history of man, the United States of America was created as a true beacon of freedom and certain inalienable rights for all the world to see, yet it seems like a misconception of that very purpose has been taught to the people through various media outlets, buzz words and disinformation. I have heard, time and time again, people claiming that something in the

So, what exactly is the difference between a republic and a democracy? There are multiple differences between the two, but a few which I see as the most important, and which are, not surprisingly, the most violated of late. As a conservative, the most fundamental key of a republic is the limit set on government by law. In a republic, those limits are set by a charter or constitution, which sets out certain inalienable rights that cannot be taken away, even by elected officials. Sound familiar?

politicians or majority. By swearing to uphold the Constitution we swear to uphold the very foundation and bedrock of this country: the inalienable rights of the individual, not the majority.

A democracy views the rights of the people as a group, meaning they impose the will of the majority over the rights of a minority or individual. The republic, on the other hand, views rights as granted to the individual, meaning the majority cannot take away certain inalienable rights.

And while there is a vocal minority and many politicians who would like to chip away at our foundation by doing away with the document which founded us and those principles which guide us, this is why the words to the Pledge of Allegiance speak to those very fundamentals:

While many people mistakenly believe that we live in a democracy and the government has power to create laws, take away and give rights as long as the majority of the electorate supports it, they are dreadfully wrong. When you hear the media and the left skewer “constitutionalists” and talk about repealing or changing that document, they are both misguided and ignorant of what this country was actually founded upon, or worse, diabolical individuals who know exactly what treasonous acts they are suggesting. This is why every one of our men and women entering the military swear an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, not the

DOUG’S RANT !!!!!! I Rant, You Decide I’m Thankful … but I’m all for being thankful this time of year, but with my “glass half empty” mentality, I just can’t let it go at that. -I’m thankful for Senator Barbara Boxer’s effort to stop the Cemex mine, but then she turns around and votes against the Keystone Pipeline, saying, “It’s not the pipeline I’m opposed to, it’s what is in the pipeline I don’t like; it’s dirty, filthy oil!” Barbara, have you happened to notice what oil means to our economy, let alone our survival? -I’m thankful to live in a country that is so wonderful that millions want to come here, but why in the world do we allow so many to just waltz across the border and then we are expected to support them with money we have to borrow in order to pay for them and thousands of other stupid things? -I’m thankful to live in such a nice city, with so many nice people that most everyone would want to raise their families here, but I’m not thankful as I hear story after story of start-up or expanding businesses and what they go through with city inspectors when they try to achieve the “American dream.” It really is a shame, just ask someone who has been through it. -I’m thankful for our three sons, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, but it scares the pee out of me as to what they will face after I’m long gone. If things keep progressing the way they have been, then who knows? The $18 trillion debt alone is going to catch up to Americans sooner or later. -I’m thankful our son had the willingness and courage to fight in the war in Afghanistan, but hate how that experience set him back as he struggles to find his way in civilian life. -I’m thankful for the freedom we have in this country, but get pessimistic when the “Personal Freedom Index” rates the United States 21st on the list of most free countries in the world. Hello! Shouldn’t we be NUMBER ONE? -I’m thankful for freedom of speech and press, which allows me to spew this nonsense each week, but I don’t appreciate that people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson use it to stir up race trouble, putting the notion into the minds of people of color that they can’t succeed in the world because of continued racism. They never mention the horrible problem of African Americans killing African Americans at an alarming rate. They don’t cite the proliferation of births to unwed mothers and the high rate of fatherless families in the black community, which many believe is the root of the problem leading to their circumstances.

"Loving God... Loving Others"

-I’m thankful for the right to assemble, but what happened in Ferguson this week is a clear violation of peaceful demonstration by a bunch of lazy, punk jerks who had no interest in the court ruling regarding Michael Brown, using the circumstance to loot and burn their own community for personal gain. If they are so concerned with justice and what happened to a teenager killed by a policeman, why did they ruin the business lives of so many good people with senseless and selfish destruction?

Democratic Senators Against Obama’s Immigration Order: Really? How many of ‘em? Two or three?

-I’m thankful that racism has decreased a great deal, even since I was a kid, but dislike that so many still cling to it as an excuse for underachieving, breaking the law or zeroing in on a single event, claiming it represents our society as a whole. What if the policeman was black and Mike Brown was white? Would we even have heard about it? How many white teenagers are killed by police in a given year?

Obama to Congress: It’s My Way or My Way: Had a couple of bosses like that, it made for lousy morale and a lack of productiveness!

I’m thankful for the comfort and convenience electricity provides, but am concerned about the elevating risk of terrorist hackers crippling power for millions of us for extended periods of time, causing mass mayhem, and the apparent lack of concern about the situation.

“What he did is a dangerous precedent, on his own; he decided not to delay prosecution, but affirmatively granted legal status to 5 million people. That should scare every American. If he has the power to do that, what could a Republican do regarding laws that they don’t like?” (Lindsey Graham)

-I’m thankful I have the capability, insight and passion to express my political views in this space, “The Gazette Radio Hour,” and in normal conversation. But, I really hate when I let my emotions get the best of me and I act like a jerk when a guest on the show has beliefs that are completely opposed to mine or I get in a conversation with a friend that turns into a shouting match—not good, Doug! -I’m really thankful for the enjoyment the Dodgers, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals and University of Arizona provides my family and me, but I hate that the Dodgers haven’t been to the World Series since 1988 and the freaking, hated Giants have won three World Series in five years! I don’t like that the Suns haven’t won the NBA title and the Cardinals haven’t won a Super Bowl. The one that hurts the most, though, is that UA is the only team in the Pac 12 to have never been to the Rose Bowl! Woe is me. -What I’m really thankful for is that God has blessed my family and me with so much, even when it doesn’t feel like it. We have it so much better than most of the people in the entire world! No “buts” about God! -I’m thankful to you regular readers of this rant and the support many of you have shown along the way (even if you don’t always agree with me). There ain’t no “buts” about this one!

They did an opening skit that was one of the best deconstructions, the best attacks, the best illustrations of Obama and his unconstitutional executive order on amnesty for the low-information crowd that you would ever want to see. Restaurant Review

By Ben Oakley

Las Delicias Hola! Last Friday evening, after attending and enjoying a fun and profitable poker tournament at the home of friends, Isabella, Gavin and I stopped in at Las Delicias Mexican Restaurant in Canyon Country for some authentic Mexican food. We had each been to Las Delicias on numerous occasions for breakfast, but not late in the evening. We entered Las Delicias and found the place, as usual, to be loud and full of patrons, enjoying their food and Spanish television. Also, there were two dining rooms that were clean and inviting, as well as ample in size to accommodate the patrons. We stood in line at the counter to order our food. We all wanted carne asada. Quickly we placed our orders and found a table. As we waited for our food to be served, we noticed how well the staff worked at keeping tables clean and available for additional patrons. We stopped to fill our soft drinks from the soda fountain enroute to our table, talking and joking about the poker game and my winnings!

Soon our carne asada arrived, served with rice, homemade refried beans and handmade tortillas. The food was really fresh and plentiful. Safe to say, having worked in the Hollenbeck area, the carne asada was the best this side of East Los Angeles. We found a late evening meal of carne asada to be every bit as good as an early morning breakfast of huevos machaca at Las Delicias. The restaurant provided a Mexican dining experience with an authentic ambiance and delicious, high quality and very reasonably priced Mexican food. Las Delicias Mexican Restaurant is located at 27125 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country. 4 out of 5 Acorns

Business of the Week Nancy’s Ranch There have been signs of Christmas all over town since October, but this weekend marks the official start of the holidays with the opening of most of the tree lots here in town. Nothing says “Christmas” more than a freshly cut tree in your home, brightly lit, beautifully decorated and filling the rooms with the scent of pine. And what better way to keep the family Christmas tree tradition alive than by getting your spruce from a local lot that prides itself on the same customs? Nancy’s Ranch, owned by the Roatcap family, has been in business in the SCV for 43 years, supplying local families with trees that have brightened up the holidays for decades.

them home, so no need to worry about how long they’ve been sitting in a lot without water. The tree experts at Nancy’s will take care of all the prep on your seasonal sapling by cutting the bottom of the trunk so it sits properly in the stand. They also have a special machine to shake all the loose needles off to minimize any mess. Afterwards, let them net it up and tie it up for the trip home. Now it’s up to you and the family to put the finishing touches on the tree to make it shine, bringing holiday joy to your home all month long.

Owner Nancy Roatcap grew up in a family of farmers. Her father grew tomatoes until 1968, when he decided to make the switch to Christmas trees. Nancy herself went to college to study agriculture, where she honed her skills in order to take over the business in the ‘80s.

“Aside from the farm experience and the freshest tree possible, you get the family experience when you come to the Ranch,” said Nancy. Nancy’s Ranch is open to the public the day after Thanksgiving and will remain so until December 24. They open at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends, closing at dusk every night for those who wish to cut their own trees. The pre-cut yard, however, will stay open until 9 p.m. Bring the family out to the Ranch for a true Christmas experience that will keep your holiday tradition going strong.

Patrons have the choice of cutting down their own Monterey Pines, which grow freely on acres of land at the Ranch. If you choose to leave the chopping to the experts, there is a large selection of beautiful pre-cut trees from which to choose. Take your pick from the various Grand Firs, Frasier Firs, Noble Firs, Nordmann Firs or Douglas Firs in all shapes and sizes. The price for a “Cut Your Own” tree is $54.95, regardless of size, and pre-cut firs range from $19.95 to $399.95. The Ranch prides itself on being “Tree Fresh” certified from the California Christmas Tree Association, meaning they go the extra mile to bring you the freshest trees. All pre-cuts are stored and displayed in water until you take

Against 3NT West leads his 4th-best Spade. East’s Jack is taken by Declarer’s Queen, then a Diamond to Dummy and the losing Club finesse. At this point West can count 9 or 10 tricks for Declarer, via 2 Spades, 4 Diamonds and 3 or 4 Clubs. West’s only hope for defeating 3NT is that the defense can cash 4 Hearts. Bingo! He shifts to a low Heart and it’s down one. Take Two! West leads a low Spade, as before, but this time Declarer wins East’s Jack with the Ace! Yes, really! Declarer doesn’t need a second Spade trick, but he does want to avoid a Heart shift and that extravagance in the Spade suit is just the way to do it. Later, when West wins his ♣K, he’s likely to be duped into assuming that East has the ♠Q and will lead another low Spade. 10 tricks!

The Antidote! Twenty or thirty years ago, this sneaky ruse worked every time, but nowadays there is a defensive antidote. It involves East telling partner whether or not he likes that opening Spade lead. When Declarer leads a Diamond at Trick 2, East can signal with the Nine (high means “I like your opening lead”), or with the Six (low means “I don’t”). On the actual deal, East plays the discouraging Six, alerting West to Declarer’s shenanigans. That signal is called a Smith Echo and is a common agreement among tournament players. For more on this, please Google “smith echo for dummies”. No offense, dear readers, it’s merely a search which takes you to a most helpful article.

Non-Profit of the Week Placerita Nature Center A Santa Clarita educational staple for decades, the Placerita Nature Center strives to inspire awareness, passion and respect for nature and the earth as well as preserve the surrounding environment for future generations. They also do their part in preserving the history and ecosystem of the surrounding canyon. With hundreds of wildlife and flora on the grounds, the team at the Nature Center has its hands full conserving this natural wild environment. Aside from their preservation efforts, staff members also host numerous classes and seminars to educate the public on the importance of their efforts, and to teach them to appreciate the wildlife around them. They lead weekly public education programs, animal presentations, nature hikes and self-guided educational trails. Every Saturday they offer a family nature walk and a native live animal presentation.

Every second Saturday a docent leads a bird walk for the public, beginners and advanced watchers are welcome as long as they bring their own binoculars. Every third Sunday of the month, the center hosts a Community Nature Education Series highlighting a different topic every session. In addition, the third Thursday of the month features a walking meditation program, and staffers round out the month by hosting a “Blooms of the Season” wildflower walk every fourth Saturday. These programs are all free and are a good way to spend quality time out in the open with the family. Aside from the calendar of programs, the Nature Center is brimming with historical relevancy. On site is the “Oak of the Golden Dream,” California’s original gold discovery site in the 1800s, as well as the historic Walker Cabin, which belonged to the original owners of the land, and was built by Frank Walker himself in 1920. The Nature Center houses various animal and plant specimens that can be found in the area. Guests can explore the different rooms full of interesting information and ask the friendly and knowledgeable volunteers questions. The area is also known for its numerous hiking trails, which range from novice to expert. The park is also a splendid place for an afternoon picnic. On Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7, the Placerita Nature Center will host its annual fundraising Holiday Craft Fair. SCV residents are invited to decorate their own holiday wreaths, centerpieces, candles and ornaments using fresh-cut greenery, pinecones and other natural finds. Crafts and wreaths range in price from $2 to $12. The Placerita Nature Center is located at 19152 Placerita Canyon Road in Newhall. For more information visit www.placerita.org.

Heroes of the Week South Valley Church Members of South Valley Church devote themselves to “helping people find and follow God.” Aside from their worship services, which include solid Biblical teachings with real-life lessons, they offer a number of educational classes where children can learn and grow. The Church deserves to be recognized for its everyday commitment to the families in Santa Clarita, but with Thanksgiving right around the corner, The Gazette wanted to highlight some of the charitable efforts that go above and beyond this time of year.

serve, others a place to get fed and clothed, and also just gives people a place to go and be in the company of others. We’ve had so many local college students attend who are unable to go home during this time and thank us for giving them a place to go,” he explains.

On November 27 South Valley Church will host Giving Thanks Giving, a free Thanksgiving dinner event open to everyone in the Santa Clarita Valley. Held at the Newhall Public Library from 9am to 2pm, the popular feast is now in its 10th year. Originally created by Roger and Shannon Hasper, former owners of Newhall Bicycle Company, the tradition was taken over by the church after the Haspers moved out of town. Since its inception, it has turned into a large community event with food, a large clothing drive and entertainment.

So join South Valley Church this Thanksgiving and celebrate the holiday with good food, great spirits, and new friends.

Due to many new regulations put on them by the City of Santa Clarita, the small church was left with the majority of the costs for the event. Staff members have been receiving generous donations from the community to help offset the costs, which have become very expensive over the years. With a mindset of “The Feast Must Go On,” they worked hard to make sure that this event continued its annual tradition, which has been such a comfort to residents of all walks of life. While Giving Thanks Giving benefits many needy families in our community, South Valley Church Pastor Kevin Pisano wants to stress the point that the event is open to everyone in Santa Clarita. “It’s a really great multi-faceted community event. It’s for people in need, and for others who just want to be with other people on the holiday. It gives people a place to

Sports Highlights By Tim Haddock

Local Champions A trio of teams from the Santa Clarita Valley celebrated championships over the weekend.

Zabilski completed the course in 14 minutes, 49 seconds, the fastest time of any runner from the Santa Clarita Valley in the Southern Section final. The previous mark was set by Kristian Martinez from Golden Valley in 14 minutes, 50 seconds in 2011.

The Santa Clarita Christian Girls Volleyball team won its first CIF championship. The Saugus Girls Cross Country team won its seventh CIF Southern Section championship. The College of the Canyons Mens Cross Country team won its first state title in 39 years. First, the Santa Clarita Christian Girls Volleyball team not only won its first CIF championship in school history, it’s the first in the Santa Clarita Valley. SCCS beat Upland Christian in five games in the Southern Section Division 5AA championship match. The Santa Clarita team won the first game before losing the next two. Down two games to one, Santa Clarita Christian won the pivotal Game 4, then won Game 5, 15-11. Kylie Brown was the star of the game for Santa Clarita Christian. She had 33 kills and 16 digs in the championship match. She had 12 kills in Game 4, a must-win point in the match for Santa Clarita Christian. Brown added seven more kills in the fifth and deciding game. Jessica McCarty had 10 kills and Samantha Villapando had 44 assists. Tiffany Shroyer had a team-high 21 digs. The Santa Clarita Christian Girls finished the season with an 18-7-1 record. The Cardinals reached the championship match of the Division 5AA playoffs in 2002 and lost. They also reached the semifinals of the CIF playoffs once and played in the quarterfinals the past two seasons. The team will move on to the CIF State Division 5 tournament. They are the No. 3 seed in the Southern California bracket and will play Buckley in the first round. The Saugus Girls Cross Country team won the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship at Mt. San Antonio College.

Both the Saugus Girls and Boys teams qualified for the CIF State meet at Woodward Park in Fresno this weekend. West Ranch’s Tucker Welker will compete in the CIF State meet as an individual. He completed the course in 13th place in 15 minutes, 15 seconds. He is the first male runner from West Ranch to advance to the CIF State final. The College of the Canyons Mens Cross Country team won the California Community College Athletic Association state championship at Woodward Park in Fresno. The top five runners for COC finished in the top 23 of the race. Grant Stromberg from Palisades High was the top finisher for COC. He was eighth in 20 minutes, 25.8 seconds. He earned a spot on the Junior College All America team. The top 14 runners were selected to the All America team. Rodrigo Ornelas from Saugus High School was 16th. Ethan Walker, also from Saugus High, was 17th. Canyon High School graduate Jason Hillquist was 20th. The COC women had their best showing in the California Community College state final with a second-place finish. Dominique Dowell and Canyon High graduate Shalyn Mabrito earned spots on the Junior College All America team. Dowell was 10th and Mabrito was 11th. The previous best finish for the COC Womens Cross Country was eighth in 2013.

End of High School Football Season The Hart High School football team lost to Upland, 52-21 in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division playoffs. However, Hart receiver Trent Irwin broke two state records in the game.

The Saugus Girls won their seventh Southern Section title in the past nine years. Samantha Ortega was the top finisher for Saugus. She was third in 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Teammate Ashley Heys was seventh in 17 minutes, 49 seconds. They were the only two runners from Saugus in the top 10. Mariah Castillo was 18th in 18 minutes, 8 seconds. Jessica Ruiz was 24th in 18 minutes, 13 seconds. The story of the race might be Sabrina Janes. She was the fifth scoring runner for Saugus, in 41st place in 18 minutes, 34 seconds. Janes missed a month of racing while recovering from a knee injury. Her return was instrumental for Saugus to capture the Southern Section Division 2 title. The Saugus Boys finished fifth in the Southern Section Division 2 race. Brian Zabilski had a record-setting race and finished second.

Irwin caught 15 passes for 161 yards and set the CIF state record for career receptions and receiving yards set by Canyon High School’s Drew Wolitarsky. Irwin ends his high school career with 285 receptions and 5,147 yards. He also broke the Hart school record for receptions in a single season with 106. He broke Ryan Wolfe’s record of 93 receptions set in 2004. Tim Haddock is the sports director at KHTS AM 1220. Holiday Driving Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe!

By Robin Sandoval

Thanksgiving is this week! There are events to get to, shoppers out in abundance, family and friend gatherings, vacation getaways, volunteer help for the needy, parades and so much more! Many of those who are going to be traveling this Thanksgiving holiday are very likely to encounter additional traffic on the road. Remember to take it easy and pay extra attention to what’s going on around you. As such, starting this Wednesday, November 26 through Sunday, November 30, a “maximum enforcement period” will be observed by the CHP. If you’re wondering what that is, it’s a heightened awareness by law enforcement of anyone behind the wheel. For the week of Thanksgiving, the CHP will be enforcing traffic safety laws to their full extent. This means that, if someone is caught speeding and they hope to get off with a warning—they should guess again. With so many additional travelers on the roads during the holiday season, the CHP won’t be showing any quarter. The CHP Southern Division has provided a few tips to help motorists stay safe on the roads: •

Stay off your phone! There’s been a lot of national attention over the past few years about collisions that were due to someone texting while driving. You only need to take your eyes off the road for a second or two for tragedy to occur. If you’re running late for a holiday party or dinner, contacting your host isn’t as urgent as you might think. They’d probably rather have you arrive late than not at all.

The legal blood alcohol content in the State of California is .08 percent, or about one drink. However, people react to alcohol in different ways. As such, it’s entirely possible to be stopped and

arrested even if your BAC is less than .08%. That being said, if you plan to consume alcohol, no matter how little, make sure you give yourself ample time to rest before getting behind the wheel. •

The weather can be unpredictable, and those who will be traveling to higher elevations where there could be snow, make sure to bring chains for your tires. It can be prudent to pack a few additional items like blankets, snacks, water, batteries and a flashlight in the event that your car gets stranded.

Don’t drive while tired! Most of us tend to eat our fill (and then some) on Thanksgiving, and eating large amounts of food (and turkey) tend to make us tired as energy is diverted to the process of digestion. That being the case, if you just don’t feel like you’ve got the energy to drive--don’t. Fatigue can impair your judgment and reaction times pretty significantly. If you find yourself in a situation like this, it’s often best to just wait it out until you feel alert enough to get behind the wheel. Remember that just because you do your very best at heeding the advice of the CHP, it doesn’t mean that those around you necessarily will be. Make sure not to follow the car ahead of you too closely in the event that you need to make a quick stop. Also, do your best to leave yourself an “out” to the right or left in case there’s any trouble up ahead. Whatever you choose to do and wherever you go, here’s wishing you and yours a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Robin Sandoval is a California Licensed Bail Bondsman and owner of SCV Bail Bonds. The 2015 class of inductees includes:

The evening’s main program will begin at 7 p.m. and feature a special presentation for each of this year’s inductees, highlighting their career achievements as student-athletes at College of the Canyons.

“I am honored and excited to introduce the college’s 2015 class of Athletic Hall of Fame inductees,” said Len Mohney, COC dean of athletics and physical education. “Each of this year’s honorees achieved a unique set of athletic accomplishments during their respective time at the college, while also representing the ideals of COC Athletics— hard work, determination, sportsmanship and a commitment to excellence. We are proud to honor them in this manner.”

School Superintendent from Oxnard When students in the Sulphur Springs School District return to class after the holidays, there will be a new authority figure at the helm. School Board members are expected to approve a contract for Catherine Kawaguchi in open session at the board’s next meeting on December 10. Kawaguchi currently holds the job of assistant superintendent of educational services for the Oxnard School District in Ventura County. She is eager to move into the local post and lead the district, she said. “The district is focused on student achievement and targeted on making sure that the children are learning in 21st century learning environments,” said a statement she released. Her first order of business will be to meet as many parents, children, staff members and community leaders as possible.

“It is important to listen to the school’s community and learn the culture of the District as soon as possible,” she stated. Kawaguchi earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from University of California Santa Barbara, masters in educational leadership from California Lutheran University, and just recently completed her doctorate in educational leadership from University of Southern California. She started her career as an elementary teacher for 15 years, where she spent most of her years teaching sixth grade. She also worked as an assistant principal in a middle school and was then promoted to principal of an elementary school. Kawaguchi was later promoted again to assistant superintendent, where she has served for five years.

By Perry Smith

Kawaguchi brings with her experience with the implementation of the common core state standards and the next generation science standards. She helped her district become the first in Ventura County to roll out over 17,000 iPads to children and staff. “I look forward to working closely with district teachers and staff to ensure that we are supporting children with new technology,” she said, “and making sure that our children are prepared to learn in a rigorous and supportive environment.” Kawaguchi said that Sulphur Springs Union School District is focused on strengthening families and bringing everyone together to support and increase academic success for their children. She looks forward to continuing to celebrate the great successes in the District and working with the Board of Trustees to ensure that all children have access to resources to further enhance their learning. He is great with kids and other friendly dogs, but has not yet been cat tested. Oliver was born deaf but that does impede his ability to love. He is one big love bug!

5.

Moose - Quirky, silly, affectionate, playful, Moose would make a great companion for any home. He is approximately 1 year old and good with other dogs, don’t know about cats.

6.

Mary - Mary is gentle, soulful, and sweet. Approximately two years old, she is an active girl who loves running, long walks and hikes and would make a great running/biking partner. Mary absolutely adores other dogs, a home with a canine pal would be ideal. She can be shy around strangers and has a tough time trusting men, but once she does, she is loving and loyal! She loves to cuddle and just be close to her human. Your time, patience, care and love will be rewarded tenfold! A home with just women would be most ideal for this sweet girl. Fitting with her somewhat shy demeanor, she is soft-spoken, and rarely barks. Mary is spayed, current on vaccinations, and microchipped.

MinPin Mix needs forever home 661-476-2742 Small dog mix needs loving home. Rescued from the pound. We cannot be home enough and he loves people. He is fine with other dogs, never been around cars, and a little nervous around small children. This is common in small dogs and would probably get over it with a little more exposure. Almost done with potty training. Getting used to dog door. He is about a year and half and 14 pounds. He has min pin coloring and loves to hangout with people as much as possible. He was a stray and has never had a real home so training is a little lax for his age but we have almost mastered sit and lay down. He is also pretty good at stay. Loves to play with toys. He is a blast and he needs someone who is ready to have a bff forever. Small minpin mix needs home 661-476-2742 year and half minpin mix needs home. rescue from pound. loves people. good with dogs. 13 pounds neutered and up to date.so much more..call for details and photos Very great condition 7 deep feeding bins very large, oblong shape, for feeding live stock or water for horses or cattles, live stock can not throw fee or hay out of them.
