Art Gallery Opens Owner Comes out of Retirement for More Opportunity to Shop Local

FPPC ID# 1370783

By Martha Michael

As residents spend more time creating atmosphere in their homes than at any other time of year, the scene is perfectly set for Dave Joseph’s new store. Gallery Josephs Fine Art & Custom Framing just opened in Canyon Country, at the start of the holiday shopping season. “We have a huge collection, if people are seeking a work of art or sculpture, something to create laughter or happiness, or to make a dramatic impact, whatever they’re looking for,” said Dave Joseph, the store’s owner. And for those who already have a work of art, Gallery Josephs does custom framing. “We have composite mouldings, all types of mouldings fitting all types of budgets,” said Joseph. “We outdo the prices of a lot of competitors.” When Joseph describes the business, he emphasizes the lower price tag and quality of service. “People are on budgets. They can save 50 percent using laminate mouldings that look like real wood … and we do layaway,” he said. “We can do inexpensive or exquisite.” continued on page 3

Tongs, Bigfoot, Hoboes & Our Greatest Crime Hard to believe, but the SCV is one of the most significant historical spots in all of America. Here’s a look at what happened locally from the annals of yesteryear… IN EONS GONE BY … • One of the most famous bird naturalists, John Woodhouse Audubon, camped out in Castaic the week of November 18, 1848. A much smaller Castaic Lake and swamplands were favored stopping grounds for a wide variety of migrating birds and Audubon spent much time here sketching them. • The railroad linked up here in 1876, and by 1898, the last of the Chinese workers left Newhall. Hop Lee and his wife, who had owned the local laundry shop, left to return to their homeland of China. • In the early 1890s, we had a Tong (Chinese mafia) presence here. The Earl Packing Co. was in downtown Newhall and run by the white manager, Lou Ledger. Labor at the meat processing plant were Chinese ex-railroad laborers. An interesting phenomenon occurred about three times a year. The entire work force quit, then was hired back the next day. Why? The Tong representative got a $1 bonus for every man he hired. Ledger, by the way, ended up being killed by a beautiful señorita. She stabbed him to death on the dance floor. • In 1912, Walter and Gertrude Baugher left Los Angeles in a wagon filled with all their earthly possessions, leading a flock of poultry. They homesteaded in Mint Canyon, building, at first, a little canvas and lean-to shack, then constructing a rock house. Life in pre-Canyon Country could be hard. A trip to the store meant Gertrude would drive down to Solemint Junction and leave a list of requests. The grocer would send a deliveryman to Los Angeles to pick up the goodies. The Baughers did all right with their 1,700tree apricot orchard. Within two years, they bought a new car — a Stoddard Dayton. It could go 25 mph, uphill. Gertrude had several jobs, including county librarian. She set up shop in her house and pioneers would drop by her home, day or night, to peruse the newest titles.

90 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, 1924 … • Oil millionaire W.W. Orcutt bought 29 acres from Henry Clay Needham’s ranch on present-day Sierra Highway. It’s just south of Eternal Valley and you can still see that rock entrance from the road. The two were rather famous. Orcutt ended up with a big cattle ranch that lasted until the 1960s. It’s the Rice Canyon nature preserve today. Needham? He’s the only SCVian to run for president. And, he became a senator and governor. Needham was head of the Prohibitionist Party and ran three times for the Oval Office. • Bouquet Canyon’s Jim Biddison was named constable for the SCV. Biddison replaced Ed Brown, who was murdered earlier in that infamous shoot-out with Gus LeBrun. Biddison was a former Denver lawman and forest ranger, locally. His very first day behind the badge, he cracked a burglary ring and discovered an unidentifiable corpse up Mint Canyon. 85 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1929 … • Can’t forget THE biggest crime in SCV history. Buffalo Tom Vernon derailed a train by the presentday Saugus Speedway. He was putting together cash to pay for an abortion for a prostitute girlfriend in Los Angeles. It wasn’t hard to figure out it was Tom. While crouching in the shrubbery, a letter with his name on it AND his travel itinerary to Wyoming fell from his pocket. Tom served 40 years for the robbery. 80 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1934 ... • Another tough sentence: R.W. Mitskell drew two

consecutive life-in-prison terms for hijacking an egg truck. • Not a month after Halloween, ghouls scoured the fresh wreckage of a crashed airplane by Beale’s Cut. They carted off body parts. • One of the signatures of the Great Depression was the migrations of lost souls via the rails. It was often painted as a melancholy, albeit romantic, pastime. There was the more horrific side to it. William Myers lost an arm hopping off a freight pulling into the Saugus Station. It got caught in one of the wheels. With so many transients passing through the valley on trains, we had many accidents where men lost legs, arms and were even bisected trying to either hop on or off a fast-moving freight.

BIGFOOT vs. MARLOW —TV’s Channel 4 anchorman Jess Marlow ventured out to the back canyons of our valley with video crews to search for the alleged giant hairy ape man many call Bigfoot. Neither Channel 4, a host of newspaper reporter crews or the teams of Sasquatch hunters crawling through our valley were able to capture the beast. By the way, none of the above are Jeff Marlow.

70 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1944 ... • Famed actor and real-life cowboy Lash Larue entertained folks at the world-famous Newhall-Saugus Rodeo by riding a bucking Brahma bull — while smoking a huge stogie. • The 1944 Rodeo was postponed due to a rare November lightning storm. For the first time in our history, The Los Angeles Humane Society sent a representative to make sure none of the rodeo stock was injured. Too bad the humans didn’t have an SPCA rep handy. The critters sent three cowboys to the hospital. • We were farm country then. Sheep dipping was a regular feature of rural life — especially if you owned sheep. Newhall Pharmacy doubled as a vet supply shop, selling sheep dip, cattle bacterins and serums. • A week-long storm — the wettest since 1900 — wiped out roads and created waterfalls throughout the valley. • For the war effort, the Newhall Hills military oil tanker rolled off the assembly lines at the Marinship Corporation’s shipyards in Sausalito. It was the 11th in a series of 32 tankers in the “Hills” class. Newhall Hills was named to honor the oil producing area in Santa Clarita. 60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1954 ... • At Hart, the Junior High Girls League voted Kathleen Scannell and Sharon Hall as having the Best Hair in school. • Leaded gas and a lack of will to live was the cause of death of two out-of-towners. In separate suicides, one forlorn man and one lost woman ended their lives by extending hoses from the exhaust pipes into

their car interiors. The woman took her pet dog into the hereafter with her. It was the second time in local history where a woman committed suicide in such a fashion, with her dog dying in the back seat. • Hoboes trying to beat the unseasonably cold November broke into the original and abandoned Newhall Train Depot by starting a campfire. Locals saw smoke and called the fire department. The local flame fighters broke into the place (which was then a potato warehouse) to douse the tiny blaze. Damages amounted to $20. A HALF CENTURY AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1964 ... • Edwin Allen Smith, Newhall’s first honorary mayor and captain of the local CHP, died this week in 1965. • San Francisquito Canyon and old 99 were briefly closed. The culprit? Snow. We had a frigid week in town, with the mercury hitting from the low 20s to mid-30s. Necessity is the mother of capitalism. Paint store owner Ted Berquist started displaying snow shovels. 40 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1974 ... • Locals who were trying to create a brand new California county used a little PR and marketing. Calling the greater SCV “Canyon County,” a local government formation committee put a measure on the 1976 ballot on this date — the 200th anniversary of American independence. Alas, when 1976 did arrive, Canyon County fell as a county-wide measure, at about a 65-35 percent thrashing. Interestingly, that was the same ratio the Canyon County measure passed here locally. There hadn’t been a new county formed since 1911, when Imperial came into being. • Pigeons have been killed by the hundreds of millions and some locals understood why. The new benches at the Valencia Civic Center were littered with pigeon poop and there wasn’t a single place to sit for humans. 30 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IN 1984 ... • The county Regional Planning Commission actually said no to a housing project here in Santa Clarita. Developers for Ben Johnson’s Farms wanted to build 6.6 homes per acre on 861 acres at the corner of Bouquet and Vasquez Canyon. That’s almost 5,700 homes. The RPC noted the developer turned in an inadequate Environmental Impact Report and that also, the narrow ribbons of Bouquet and Vasquez could not absorb that much extra traffic. • Newhall woman Lynn Ranstrom became romantically involved with a New York man. She and her lover returned to murder Lynn’s husband in the driveway of his Wayman Avenue home. Ranstrom and her lover, ex-New York City cop Dan Bianco, were arrested. Bianco had flown from the East Coast, rented a car, drove to Newhall, used a silenced .22 caliber pistol to kill Justin Ranstrom, then flew back to New York.

Expectations Create Holiday Stress ex·pec·ta·tion (ek-spek-tā-shən, ik-) The act of expecting, eager anticipation, the state of being expected. Something expected: a result that did not live up to expectations. Expectations prospects, especially gain. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many of you will sigh, a sigh of relief, after your brother or sister leave the holiday dinner, exclaiming, “Glad that’s over. We don’t have to endure this relationship one more minute until next year.” Not to mention, you are chomping at the bit and ready to race out the door for that perfect shopping experience. No wonder the holidays are stressful. We expect great bargains, but the truth is that in just a few hours of shopping, many of us will have overspent our budgets, hurling us into massive credit card debt come January 2015.

Movies like Miracle on 24th Street, White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and The Christmas Story, about Ralphie who longed for that very special Red Rider BB gun, often set us up with the expectation that our lives should be perfect and we should get what we want and get it when we want it. These movies may telegraph the feeling that life is perfect if we only believe. Often unrealistic expectations set us up for failure, holiday sadness and, for some, a dark, deep depression. So, just how should we handle the holidays? • Don’t cling to visions of a Norman Rockwell family moment. That happens only in paintings. • Do consider family problems when planning celebratory gatherings. If your brother drinks too much, avoid a dinner party and throw a dry holiday brunch instead. • Don’t travel out of guilt. Have an honest conversation with your family about how difficult

Lean to the Left

Bow to Boxer

By Sylvia Turner Uh-oh, the right-leaning SCV is going to have to bow down to the very left-leaning Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). She may end up being the area’s hero, especially for the east side of town. Sen. Boxer has reintroduced the Soledad Canyon Settlement Act to finally put to rest the threatening Cemex Mine matter. Cemex USA’s sand and gravel mining lease at Soledad Canyon has caused concern for Santa Clarita for a decade and a half, and in 2007 the City entered into an agreement with the business, a costly compromise to attempt to make the corporation go away. Sen. Boxer’s bill calls for the Bureau of Land Management to sell lands near Victorville, California, and

money would go to Cemex for the canceled contracts. The local mining project would be cancelled, in addition to any future mining in in Soledad. Not only that, part of Sen. Boxer’s bill calls for no cost to taxpayers in the resolution. Now she’s speaking the Right’s language! Of course, she’s not exactly “keeping the Government out of it.” Get your knees ready to bow down—to leftwing hero Boxer and the big bad Government. Can local Republicans humble themselves that much? I doubt it.

By Cary Quashen it is for you to make a trip during the holidays. Suggest visiting, say, in February, when you’ll have more time to really see one another. If they don’t understand, consider there may be something wrong on their end. • Do be flexible with your partner. Some traditions are definitely worth fighting for—but you may be able to let others go. • Don’t isolate yourself. Seek out kindred souls and spend time with them. If you’re newly divorced, join a support group, volunteer at a homeless shelter, or shop for elderly neighbors so you have some human contact. Cary Quashen is the founder of the Action Family Foundation, Action Parent & Teen Support Group Programs and Action Family Counseling.

The Friends of the Library Seeking Book Donations The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library is an active group of Santa Clarita Valley citizens who value libraries by volunteering, advocating and fundraising to meet the many needs of a thriving public library. The libraries need donations of books—hardback and paperback—to carry in its used book store at the Jo Anne Darcy Canyon Country branch library. The Friends organization also operates the stores in libraries out of the Valencia branch and the Old Town Newhall branch. Residents are asked to pass along their used books to the Canyon Country branch, and donations may be picked up. One hundred percent of the proceeds of all fundraising efforts support the Santa Clarita Public libraries. A tax receipt is available upon request. Leave a message for Vicky at 661-9934766.

Are You Paying Attention? By Robert Patrick Lewis

As our country shifts back into another lame duck Congress after the mid-term elections, I see quite a few things surfacing and going on in the world that make me worried about what is in store and wonder if Americans are paying attention. As I discussed with Doug and John on KHTS last week, Obamacare “architect” Jonathan Gruber was caught on camera essentially calling the American people stupid for buying the story they were sold on the Affordable Care Act. It seems the only thing stupid to me is that the Obama administration and mainstream media are trying to downplay and distance themselves from Gruber, with even Pelosi coming out and saying she had no idea who he was, and Obama saying he was “just some adviser who was never on staff.” But, anyone who has had any media coaching or spent time in the public eye knows that once it goes out in the media, it’s impossible to take back. Thankfully, while the media tried to sweep the story under the rug, people across the country found videos of other instances where Gruber bragged about the lack of transparency and outright falsities used to pass the ACA, as well as video of Pelosi talking about and praising Gruber, the same man she claimed not to know anything about when this story surfaced.

While the man who the American people naively believed was the better choice to run the country was making jokes, mother Russia has been getting pretty frisky and outright defiant. We all know about their provocation and lack of care for the UN, and NATO crying foul when Russia started taunting the Ukraine, but have you been paying attention to what the country which Romney accurately called “our greatest threat” has been doing to the U.S.? This is part of the premise of my new book, “The Pact,” and it’s downright scary that the chess pieces I’ve been seeing put into place over the past few years are being set up for what I see as a terrifying outcome. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, there are several instances of Russian provocations towards the United States in recent months. First, a few weeks ago Russian officials announced that they would be not only increasing the frequency of their bomber flights near the U.S., but also that they would be decreasing the proximity. The Washington Times even reported back in August that Russian bombers had actually penetrated U.S. airspace 16 times over the previous 10 days. And just last week, a U.S. warship, the USS Donald Cook, was reportedly buzzed a dozen times by a Russian fighter in the Black Sea. Accounts differ widely on what exactly transpired in that instance, with some saying the fighter was equipped with technology which rendered all defensive and offensive technology useless on the U.S. warship, while the Navy made an official claim that it was a harmless incursion. There are strange things going on in the world, ladies and gentlemen, and while the U.S. has been caught up in reality TV and news about celebrities, our old enemy seems to have been moving the chess pieces around the board while we weren’t looking. If our own Commander-in-Chief had no idea of who our greatest threats are, I have to ask: are you paying attention?

Obama used to openly mock Mitt Romney in the 2012 electoral debates, saying, “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because … the Cold War’s Robert Patrick Lewis is a former Green Beret combat veteran of Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa turned been over for 20 years.” Recent news has been proving just how little attention author. His book "Love Me When I'm Gone: the true story of life, love and loss for a Green Beret Obama paid during his global intelligence briefs.

in post-9/11 war" is currently available, with his next book scheduled to hit the shelves in January 2015. He currently lives in Santa Clarita and works as an Investment Advisor Representative for TransAmerica Financial Advisors.

DOUG’S RANT !!!!!! I Rant, You Decide Early Visit From Santa Claus Would Be Nice About Now! Someone asked what I want for Christmas. I said something stupid, but then later started thinking about it—what would I really like? You probably know where I’m going with this, but here it is: -CUT ALL TAXES, from top to bottom. -CUT THE LIVING HECK OUT of REGULATIONS, from top to bottom. -RE-VAMP WORKERS’ COMPENSATION INSURANCE.

And, of course, they have don’t have the money to buy advertising (the part that really affects us), so like us, they are unable to hire new people, expand or develop new products. They don’t take their families out to dinner, get that needed car repair, buy a new stereo system, dream of buying a new car or even a house, so round and round it goes, affecting all of us! We’ve all heard the economy is improving, well it isn’t for many around here. I’m hoping, somehow, some way, Santa will get taxes lowered for all companies and workers, free up that money, enabling spending, investing, expanding, creating, getting the wheels of free enterprise rolling again. It would raise spirits and optimism, resulting in an offensive attitude instead of a defensive one. More money in all pockets and bank accounts will jump start this slow moving ox of an economy so it can become a fast moving racehorse.

-ELIMINATE the MINIMUM WAGE LAW. You ask, what will that do for you, Doug? You really want to know? You want me to get down and personal about this? Okay, I will. Valley Publications, the company I own and operate that publishes The Gazette newspaper along with Canyon Country Magazine, continues to see wild swings, up and then way down in revenue generated from advertising. There is not a consistent rhyme or reason for this, which causes me to use one of my favorite lines: “It drives me bat crap crazy!” As you can imagine, this unforeseen fluctuation of cash flow makes it very difficult to plan, expand and confidently plan for the future. Some will say, “Oh Doug, you shouldn’t put your dirty laundry out there for all to see--it will make you look bad.” Well, so be it, it is what it is and I am what I am. It’s just not me, folks, I can’t tell you how many times recently I have seen the look of despair in a business owner’s eyes as he or she shares with me the utterly painful frustration as he or she experiences the same crap we go through here. Last week I stopped by to see a former advertiser to chat and see if we could get his ad going again to help with his business. He looked at me as his eyes welled up with tears and said, “Doug, I don’t even know how I’m going to pay for gas to put in my truck, let alone pay rent and pay my guys.” He then shared with me how his workers’ comp premium was arbitrarily increased by several thousand dollars. That, along with a drop off of customers in a business that used to thrive, has brought this good, hardworking and decent man to his knees. Another issue businesses face is cash flow. In other words, I can’t pay you until I get paid. There are many more out there who put up a good front, but are struggling and hanging on by a thread.

"Loving God... Loving Others"

My goodness, talk with virtually any type of company as to what licenses and permits they have to buy, what type of regulations and procedures they have to follow, that cost them dollars and hold down productivity. Sure, there needs to be some structure and direction, but what is happening now is unreasonable, ludicrous and even sickening. Ask any employer what he/she thinks of workman’s comp insurance and how it has affected the bottom line. Even with the few employees we have here, it costs an arm and a leg; imagine what companies with a decent number of workers must pay. So, what do we do, not do? Think long and hard about hiring new people, consider lay-offs to offset added expense and look for other cost-cutting measures, that can affect the quality of product or service. The same can be said about the dreaded minimum wage, but I won’t get into that now. I know, I know, this is basic, maybe even boring stuff, but it’s driving many of us, you guessed it, BAT CRAP CRAZY! (There is another word usually used in this expression, instead of crap, but you get the gist of it.) Set us free, Santa, free us from the shackles of this government-imposed bull crap. Let us keep more of our own money, stop justifying government jobs by adding layers of regulations that choke the life out of us. Santa, please get these blithering, stupid idiots to see what they’re doing to the fabric of business and families and set us free, free at last!

To-Do List: Give the man a pen and a phone and he becomes downright dangerous! Senator Complains About “Dumb Ass Liberals”: How dare he, I would never say something like that! Quotes of the Week: “Have you heard about the Tea Party conspiracy? Really? The only leaders flexing their muscles are the leaders of Russia, China and Iran.” (Washington Post Op Ed, in response to New York Times) “I don’t think the president has the authority to amend, repeal or suspend the law or fail to refuse a law based solely on policy.” (Roberto Gonzales, former Attorney General of The United States, commenting on the President’s threat to issue an executive order on immigration) “He said in January that Obamacare was never meant to save money, don’t worry about that. But, before it was passed, he said it was a deficit reducer, it was a cost effective step towards healthcare problems … now he comes out and says, all that stuff we said about taxes, that was B.S. And this other stuff, it’s all B.S. We had to do it, because we had to get this law passed, and sorry.” (Megyn Kelly, Fox News) “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Restaurant Review

Nov 21 - Nov 27, 2014

By Ben Oakley

Cuvee Bistro and Raw Bar Cuvee Bistro and Raw Bar (Cuvee) in Valencia seems to be the current rage for locals. So, last week, late one evening, I met Isabella and our friend, Mike, at Cuvee for drinks to see what all the talk was about. I arrived before the others at about 9:00 p.m., as the business day/dinner rush was winding down. I was pleasantly greeted by an engaging woman named Elizabeth, who would ultimately be our server. I chose to sit in the patio near the fire pit. When I asked to have a look around Cuvee, Elizabeth very nicely encouraged me to do so. I found Cuvee to be clean and had an upscale appearance. The dining room was furnished with booths and tables with tablecloths for dining. The bar, too, had an inviting appearance. I returned to the patio to wait for Isabella and Mike. Soon they arrived and we ordered drinks. Mike decided upon a Moscow Mule, which is a favorite of his. He enjoyed the drink, but was a bit disappointed that it was not served in a copper mug and that it was not garnished with a lemon slice to accompany the traditional lime slice. Isabella selected a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (Cab) from the Napa Valley. She said the varietal was pleasing and that she enjoyed the depth of flavor of the grape. I asked for and received a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. My wine was light and a bit fruity in flavor with a crisp aftertaste.

While we were visiting, the owner of Cuvee, Johnny, graciously came to our table and introduced himself. He was very engaging and proud of his restaurant. Johnny shared his goal of providing a “high end” dinner house to the residents of Santa Clarita and his intent to be a good member of the community. We all agreed that we look forward to going back to Cuvee for lunch or dinner. The various menu items, $2 Epicurean tacos, Oysters Du Jour, various “Chowdas,” seafood and steak seemed enticing. We found the atmosphere, warm fire, and fine wines of Cuvee to provide a comfortable and relaxing setting to go to for a late evening adult beverage. Additionally, we liked Elizabeth’s sense of humor and fine service. Johnny’s graciousness, too, was much appreciated. The Cuvee Bistro and Raw Bar is located in the 24000 block of Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia, just east of California Pizza Kitchen. 4 out of 5 acorns

Saugus Union Names Chris Trunkey to Board By Perry Smith

Trunkey and Bruce Fox, a member of the Glendale Police Department, were the final two choices after each of the four candidates were interviewed by the board for 20 minutes. Trunkey is on the site council for West Creek Academy, a Saugus Union elementary school in Valencia. “I feel very comfortable working with (Trunkey),” said board member Judy Umeck, after the selection. “He has a constituency here and I look forward to the new and fresh ideas he has shared.” He was chosen over Fox, Julie Coate and Mathew Ferguson. Trunkey lost to Bryce by 49 votes last November. Bryce stepped down at the end of September in order to pursue a job opportunity in San Diego. He left his job at Crane Aerospace for a job at Honeywell, where he’ll be working with “process improvement activities and quality improvement activities.” Saugus Union School District officials named Chris Trunkey as the newest member to their governing board Tuesday, filling a seat left vacant by Doug Bryce’s departure in September. Trunkey, a film executive who was narrowly defeated by Bryce in last November’s school board election, was sworn in at 7:30 p.m. during the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Trunkey is the board’s second appointment. David Powell was chosen by the board to replace Stephen Winkler in July. Trunkey is CFO for Phoenix Pictures, a production company “led by Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer, two of the industry’s most respected senior executives,” according to the company’s website. “Phoenix has established a reputation for consistently developing first-rate projects with some of Hollywood’s top creative talent.”

“I’m grateful for the trust and support the Saugus board gave me with their selection,” Trunkey said. “I look forward to working with them and Dr. Joan Lucid and the rest of the cabinet.”

Non-Profit of the Week The Compassionate Friends of Santa Clarita The death of a child is devastating and it is important to the family that the child always be remembered. The Compassionate Friends of Santa Clarita is a self-help organization made up of parents who provide highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. Founded more than 40 years ago in England, The Compassionate Friends quickly jumped across the ocean and was established in the United States and incorporated in 1978 in Illinois. Today they have over 660 chapters serving all 50 states. The Compassionate Friends has a presence in at least 30 countries and is the world’s largest self-help bereavement organization. The Santa Clarita branch will participate in an annual worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died. On Sunday, December 14, the local chapter is joining hundreds of organized memorial services around the world for The Compassionate Friends

18th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, an event now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world. The local candle lighting will be part of a special service held at 6:30 p.m. at Canyon Country Park, located at l7615 W. Soledad Canyon Road, and will feature poems, selected readings, music, a slide show and performances with featured singers. Annually tens of thousands of families, united in loss, light candles for one hour during the Worldwide Candle Lighting. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are lit in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light, which continues the observance around the world. With the theme “that their light may always shine,” the Worldwide Candle Lighting has grown larger every year, with formal services last year in all 50 United States and Washington D.C., as well as at least 19 countries around the world. To contact The Compassionate Friends of Santa Clarita, call Diane Briones at 252-4654 or Alice Renolds at 252-4374, or visit www.compassionatefriends-scv. org.

Heroes of the Week Diane Briones and Alice Renolds Seventeen years ago, Diane Briones’ 20-yearold daughter, Michelle, was killed in a horrific car crash. Following the accident, Diane attended support groups wherever she could find one. A small group called The Loss of A Child was folding and members didn’t have a leader, so Diane jumped in to take over, forming a new chapter of The Compassionate Friends. She knew the importance of having a support group for parents who had lost a child, sibling, or grandchild and that she needed to have one here in Santa Clarita. People regularly ask Diane, “Why are you still running this group?” Her answer is always the same. “If I can help one person get through this awful time in their life, it is worth it to me. It has helped me to believe that my daughter did not die in vain.” Alice Renolds joined the support group after the tragic death of her two sons, Tim and Danny, Canyon High School students in a horrific car crash in 2000. She began helping the group as the newsletter editor and then became the co-leader a short time after. The

group now has an electronic version of the newsletter, as well as a website and Facebook page developed by Alice, so more parents can reach out for support in their journeys of grief. She too continues to help with the support group to show the newly bereaved that there is hope, and although you never get over the loss, you can get through it and smile again! Diane and Alice have helped hundreds of grieving parents and siblings through their years of service with the Santa Clarita Valley Chapter of The Compassionate Friends. They know that if you attend a meeting that you will find love, support and, most of all, understanding! The local chapter will participate in the annual Worldwide Candle Lighting at Canyon Country Park on Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

FBI Says City Shows Decrease in Violent Crime While population increased, violent crime decreased, according to the FBI, as reported by the City of Santa Clarita. Despite a 14.4 percent increase in population in 2013, Santa Clarita saw an overall drop in violent crimes of 19.3 percent. This includes a 37 percent drop in rapes; a 26.5 percent drop in aggravated assault and an 18 percent drop in motor vehicle theft. There were some category increases in 2013: two murders in 2013 compared with one in 2012; an uptick in burglaries, going from 616 in 2012 to 704 in 2013. But, overall, the City of Santa Clarita is one of Los Angeles County’s safest cities. “The decline in serious crimes is absolutely attributable to our commitment to crime prevention and enforcement, and the partnerships we’ve successfully forged with the City, school districts, our residents and businesses. Keeping Santa Clarita safe is a community-

wide effort,” explains Captain Roosevelt Johnson of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station. Captain Johnson assumed command of the local Station earlier this year and has continued aggressive efforts to prevent crime and apprehend criminals, working through the successful zone program and special teams. “Public safety is an important quality of life work effort for the City of Santa Clarita. Making sure our residents feel safe, that crime remains low and that we are continually assessing trends, staffing levels and needs is a top priority for the City Council,” explains Ken Striplin, City Manager.

Hop on Bus Holiday Fundraiser for Hart For parents and other community members who have wished for more resources and a better education at local schools, there is a non-profit group helping to make it a reality. The WiSH Education Foundation is helping the William S. Hart Union High School District bridge the gap between the real and the ideal. The organization works with the Hart District to raise money through community partners and events for specific funding requests (“WiSHlists”) by district educators. The foundation recently launched its “Hop Aboard the WiSH Bus” campaign to rally financial support from the community. “The educators and schools in the Hart School District do a fantastic job, but the honest truth is that there is only so much that can be accomplished with tax dollars alone,” Executive Director Amy Daniels said. “By surveying teachers and educators, we’re able to pinpoint specific needs and raise money for those purchases.”

education, performing arts, special education, athletics and Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM). Comprising 16 schools, the Hart District serves approximately 23,000 students in the Santa Clarita Valley. Hart District parent Cristine Butler has observed distinct differences in the experiences her two sons have had before and after the WiSH Education Foundation’s fundraising efforts to support the Hart district. She said her younger son currently attends Placerita Junior High School and has benefited from improvements such as more physical copies in the school library of research resources frequently needed for assignments. When her older son was a student there, she said, the family would sometimes need to search Amazon.com or the public library for those same reading materials.

With the holiday appeal campaign, Daniels said she is hoping to increase the organization’s exposure and recognition and raise increased financial support. The campaign was underwritten by California Credit Union, which works closely with those in the education community and provides office space for the WiSH Education Foundation.

“A lot of people just don’t realize what the WiSH Education Foundation does,” Butler said. “They are making materials more accessible.”

California Credit Union has also taken an extra step for the appeal. The fullservice credit union is offering to anyone who opens a new account by Jan. 31, 2015 a $10 bonus plus a $10 donation to the WiSH Education Foundation. Please visit the Valencia branch for more information.

“With all the things that faculty and staff at the Hart District campuses do, fundraising to meet the needs for equipment and resources is deep on a long list,” she said. “The WiSH Education Foundation is doing the legwork in the community … and our students are the ones who truly benefit.”

The WiSH Education Foundation was formed in 2011, and in its first two academic years as a non-profit raised nearly $90,000 for district needs. Among those needs supported have been much-needed microscopes, science equipment on every Hart district school’s WiSHlist, textbooks and literacy software for school libraries. WiSH has helped fund needs in areas including literacy, career tech

For information about the WiSH Education Foundation or to make a donation, visit www.hoponthewishbus.org or call (661) 799-9474. The foundation office is located in the California Credit Union branch at 24343 Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia.

Botton said that WiSH is also helping educators remain focused on their primary role: teaching.

Will the Passing of Proposition 47 Make for Higher Crime?

By Robin Sandoval

The problem of California’s prison overcrowding has been difficult to solve. One of the more controversial, and moderately effective, steps that were taken was to shift non-violent offenders from California State prisons into county jails. While that alleviated some of the overcrowding in the prisons, it also shifted the problem from state prisons to county jails. With nowhere else to house the massive influx of non-violent offenders, debate began as to whether it would be possible to just release them into the community. That debate culminated in proposition 47 ending up on the ballot. Prop 47 essentially reduces the sentencing requirements for non-violent crimes like theft, narcotics possession, shoplifting and forgery. The way the proposition did this was to reduce the severity of these crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. Suffice it to say, the proposition passed, and now there are thousands of inmates all over the state who are eligible for re-sentencing, and for immediate release. At the Sacramento County Jail alone, officials have stated that they expect over 400 inmates to be eligible for immediate release under the new proposition. Proponents of the law claim that it will benefit the state in two ways. The first is that it will assist in alleviating the overcrowding problem and make the jails safer for inmates. The second says the state will eventually save millions of dollars a year because there will be fewer inmates in custody. Fewer inmates to house means less tax dollars spent on housing them.

bus stop. Luckily, a witness noticed an altercation between him and the young girl and called the Sheriff ’s Department. He was arrested at the scene. The man is now being charged with felony attempt of kidnapping to commit rape, felony attempt of kidnapping for child molesting, lewd acts upon a child and two counts of attempted aggravated assault of a child. He is currently being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station in lieu of $3 million bail. But now that the bill has become law, some law enforcement agencies in the state have already begun changing their practices in regards to the newly downgraded crimes. In some Northern California areas, sheriff ’s deputies and city police are being told to “cite out” low-level offenders who would normally be held in custody to await their trials. This means that, last month, if an individual was found with a small amount of a very dangerous drug—such as cocaine, methamphetamine or heroin—he or she would have been arrested and booked on felony possession charges. Now, though, that same individual will be released from custody and given a ticket indicating when to appear in court. And any theft which equals $950 or less is now a misdemeanor charge.

Detractors, however, cite the fact that the state won’t begin seeing any decrease in the cost of housing inmates any time soon. Also, reducing the penalties for these crimes may have the unintended effect of weakening the deterrent of punishment, effectively creating more crime as a result.

Another unintended side-effect of the bill has city attorneys scrambling to hire more staff. It’s the city attorney’s office who typically prosecutes misdemeanors, while the district attorney’s office handles felony cases. With so many new misdemeanors on the books, city attorneys across the state will now have their hands full handling all of these new petitions from inmates, as well as prosecuting what stands to be a far greater number of misdemeanor cases for years to come.

Case in point, in Santa Clarita last week, a man who was arrested for commercial burglary was released from custody on a misdemeanor charge just two hours later. Before proposition 47, he would have been held on a felony theft charge and would have needed to await arraignment or be bailed out. Unfortunately, the man was caught the very next day, attempting to kidnap a minor at a

Buildings at The Greens to be Razed By Jessica Boyer

Santa Clarita city officials and owners of The Greens property in Valencia are planning to demolish buildings on the property, which have been sitting empty since 2009, officials said Tuesday.

“We’re starting an administrative nuisance abatement proceeding,” said Brian Hamblet of Burke Williams & Sorensen, who was working on behalf of the City to address concerns. “First, we need to make sure (the property owner) has been served with a notice that the property has been identified as a public nuisance,” he said. “We need to give the owners a reasonable period of time to take care of the problem on their own.”

“We’re exploring the demolition plan produced by the owners of the property,” said Tom Cole, director of community development for the City. “We anticipate the owners pulling the permit to start the demolition process by the end of the month.”

If issues on the property aren’t addressed, further action could be taken to prompt code enforcement,

Since the closure, buildings on the property have been burned and sheriff ’s deputies have had to monitor the location after reports of illicit drug activity and trespassing, officials said.

officials said.

“The first order of business is to have the buildings removed, because they are a public nuisance. Once the buildings are removed, the property owner in the future will not have to deal (with) it,” Cole said. “The current owner will sell the property or start (the) application process for a new development proposal. We have been dealing with (the) issue and we have concerns about that critical area in our town center. We’re hoping (new development) will be a project in the future.” The property near the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway, in an otherwise well-to-do part of town, reportedly has been frequented by transients, runaways and drug activity, according to Sheriff ’s Station officials. The City red-tagged the property at 25601 McBean Parkway for the second time last month, said Joe Montes, city attorney for Santa Clarita. That effort was part of the procedure intended to declare the property a public nuisance, officials said.

The Greens in Valencia opened in the early 1990s as an upscale golf putting course, restaurant and pro golf shop. It was purchased in 2006 by Brisam Valencia LLC in New York. In November 2011, a fire on the property prompted firefighters to put holes in the ceiling as part of their standard procedure. However, after the fire was extinguished, residents repeatedly trespassed on the property near the Westfield Valencia Town Center by using the holes in the ceiling of the bar as an access point. As a result of past reports and City concern, regular patrols are posted in the area to try and curtail any illicit activity on the property, said Deputy Regina Yost, zone leader for the area. “It became known to deputies that the building had become a location used for illicit drug activity, and runaways and transients would frequent the area,” Yost said. “We would get calls from concerned citizens saying they had seen people trespassing on the property. That’s a concern for us because officials had already deemed the building uninhabitable.” Article courtesy of www.hometownstation.com

Yetti is a 10 month old Great Pyrenees puppy, who has a lot of growing to do to grow into his huge paws! He’s as sweet as the day is long, and stunningly gorgeous, too. Yetti is simply super with other dogs, and gentle with people. Blue is a gorgeous blue pit bull with beautiful green eyes. He’s great with other dogs, and very sweet and gentle with people. We estimate Blue’s age to be one year of age. 1. Blue and Yetti

2. Helena

Blue and Yetti are very bonded and rely on each other for companionship and safety. They will be placed together, and we will not consider placing them separately. 2. Helena - Sweet Helena is an Akita mixed with yellow Labrador Retriever. She’s gentle and sweet, and walks well on a leash. A very calm dog who is a little on the shy side. She warms up to new people very quickly. Helena came from a shelter in Napa, CA after being found wandering as a stray. Helena is deaf, and gets along with other dogs so well that during her time in the shelter she helped temperament test other dogs.

AngelDogs Foundation Deaf Dog Ranch is the first all-breed deaf dog ranch in the country. 3. Bernie - Bernie is glad to meet you! His gorgeous amber eyes attracted our attention at the shelter. He’s a handsome big boy that is way past puppy shenanigans, but plenty lively and playful at six years old. He’s also really handsome! He’s a beautiful mix of White German Shepherd and deadgrass Chesapeake Bay Retriever. He gets along very well with other dogs, and is a happy guy. Bernie is not deaf- he is hearing. 4.Sassy - Sassy is a deaf purebred boxer who was surrendered by her owner when life circumstances hit bottom. Sassy is about a year old, very playful and friendly with other dogs, and fully trained. She’s a stunning boxer with a sweet face and personality! 5. Bryan - Who is this handsome devil? It’s Bryan, a purebred deaf American Staffie. Just two years old, Bryan charms everyone he meets with his good looks and happy personality. He’s a very intelligent dog that knows hand signal commands such as sit, come, stay, down, no and good. Bryan loves going for walks and being cuddled. He likes other dogs, and has a very active play style.

Coat Drive at Swap Meet nate, you can help provide a warmer winter by texting “WARM” to 80100 to donate $10 to One Warm Coat.

The Santa Clarita Swap Meet and the nonprofit group Help the Children have an opportunity for the public to share with others in need this winter. One Warm Coat® is a program offering free outerwear to those in the community unable to afford outerwear to help them stay warm as the temperatures drop. For the 5th consecutive year, the Santa Clarita Swap Meet will be collecting clean, gently used warm coats and jackets to be donated throughout the community until the end of January. One Warm Coat is dedicated to collecting and distributing the coats, free of charge, directly to children and adults in the local area. The coat drive program provides an easy way for individuals and families to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors by simply passing along coats and jackets that are no longer needed. The Santa Clarita Swap Meet invites you to bring your clean, gently used coats and jackets to the Saugus Speedway between Fridays and Tuesdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The process is simple: you drop off your extra coat, receive a FREE Sunday Shopper Coupon, and the Santa Clarita Swap Meet takes care of the rest. All donated coats will be given to Help the Children for distribution to people in need. If you do not have a coat to do-

“So many of our neighbors need help these days. We are proud to work with and support each one of our coat drive organizers and donors. The time, resources and energy they give to help their neighbors proves that we can warm communities one coat at a time,” said Jennifer Stockard, president and chief executive officer of One Warm Coat. One Warm Coat is a national non-profit organization that supports and encourages coat drives. It helps individuals, groups, companies and organizations across the country collect coats and deliver them to local agencies that distribute the coats free to people in need. More than four million coats have been provided to those in need at no cost since its inception in 1992. Help the Children (“HTC”) is a non-profit humanitarian relief organization dedicated to help alleviate the suffering of children and their families throughout the United States and around the world.

Kevin Browning Shifts Gears G&M Changes Hands

By Martha Michael

The couple has two sons: Kyle, who is an engineer at St. Jude’s Medical Research Center in Sylmar; and Ryan, who graduated from the Fire Academy at Antelope Valley College and whose passion is to become a firefighter. Ryan currently works at Bergie’s Restaurant in Canyon Country. Kathy Browning works for the Sulphur Springs School District and has over 30 years as a resource specialist and special education instructor, currently at Pinetree Elementary School. The family owns two Siberian Huskies, Neko & Brandy, who keep Kevin fit by accompanying him on runs and exploring the trails here in the SCV. The Brownings have noticed the changes in the SCV since the ‘80s, but have enjoyed the country feel of Sand Canyon. “The quaintness, friendliness and openness, we felt it was worth moving to Santa Clarita and have been most satisfied with our choice,” he said. But, Kevin Browning’s engineering job took him away from his passion: cars.

A

recruitment ad for a university engineering program shows a picture of a young boy playing with Legos™ and a caption that reads, “You always knew.”

Kevin Browning’s parents must’ve known, too, that he was destined to work on the mechanical side of things for his entire life. Growing up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan in the ‘60s meant, of course, Browning’s mechanical know-how would involve automobiles. “I grew up in a neighborhood where many of the fathers worked for the ‘Big 3’ (GM, Ford & Chrysler), and my best friend’s dad and his older brothers fixed cars. That’s where I got into working on cars,” said Browning. “I enjoyed building models, messed around with mini-bikes and go-karts and then I could drive. My friend bought a Camaro, and I, a Mustang.” Browning enrolled in college just as the Vietnam War was coming to an end. “I went for engineering, struggled, dropped out a couple of times, and attained my state certified mechanic credential while working at a transportation mini-bus garage,” Browning explained. “One day the owner took me aside; he saw something in me and convinced me to go back to college and get my degree.” He was a retired GM engineer who set up a meeting for the young mechanic with the dean of engineering at the college where Browning had attended. It motivated Browning to begin taking night classes, while continuing to work. But, when he found he had reached his potential at the garage, Browning returned to school fulltime. “It was a struggle, but having worked one summer at a GM forging plant, another doing piece work, I knew I had to get my degree,” he said. “The writing was on the wall—the automated factory was coming.” He met a fellow student whose father was an engineer, who then hired Browning to intern at Ford. He worked in the crash barrier lab, where they were testing car frames, evaluating alternative crash methods, performing air bag testing. “This was in 1979 and 1980 in which lighter vehicles were being designed and air bags were going to be mandatory in 1991 vehicles,” said Browning. “That experience was the incentive to get my degree.” He graduated in 1981 from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. “The reality was the automotive market and economy was heading downward in Michigan and nearby states that supported the industry. I don’t know how many resumes I had sent out, but nothing automotive was panning out,” he said. “Being young, feeling Michigan’s future was not bouncing back any time soon, I had several out-of-state job opportunities. The one I selected was Lockheed in Burbank, California. It was a bit of a shock to my family and friends I was going to uproot, but I thought I would return to the automotive industry one day.” Browning’s girlfriend, Kathy, who he later married, completed a master’s degree in education, and also found few public school teaching positions in Michigan. The couple decided to look for a house in an area that resembled the rural suburbia where they spent their childhoods. They settled in Santa Clarita more than 30 years ago. “We have lived in North Valencia, Saugus and currently Canyon Country, all of which were great neighborhoods at the time in our lives. Like most, we moved into larger homes as our family grew. Our current residence is in a spacious rural setting, especially by today’s standards. It, too, is close to work and shopping for our needs. We probably have one more move in us, especially since our boys are where we were 35 years ago and we will want to downsize. Where to? We have not decided,” he said.

“Lockheed was a great company to work for,” he explained. “I worked for them from 1981 to 1991. I had hit a lull period in the aircraft industry and thought about getting back into the automotive industry. I starting looking at franchises-it wasn’t for me; I began looking at independent automotive facilities. Through that process, I met Greg & Shelia Mouradian, who were looking to retire. They established G&M Auto Repair in 1981 in the Canyon Center and in 1991, I took over ownership.” To leave a stable job to follow a passion is a leap of faith normally left to movie scripts. But it was also a role meant for this engineer. “Turning 35 at the time, I felt it was an adventure, an opportunity to get back into the automotive industry,” said Browning. “It didn’t feel as big of a risk as starting up a new business. The fact that G&M was a well-established business in the community gave me the confidence I could do this. During the transition, there were times when I had moments of doubt, but within the first couple of years in business, I found it was about relationship and trust building, and the servicing cars followed. I still adhere to that philosophy.” Then the recession hit. Many locally-owned businesses struggled or closed their doors. “This industry has always been cyclic. I always struggled with marketing ... marketing technology has advanced; I feel it’s lost a personable touch,” said Browning. “Also, vehicle maintenance schedules have evolved into longer intervals from the manufacturer, as well as increased reliability standards. As a result, the automotive service facility does not see their customers for major service as frequently as in the past, reducing the cost of the repair order.” That’s right--the improvements in the industry actually worked against Browning. “With reliability at record highs, improved consumer warranties, free scheduled maintenance, low cost lease programs--these factors have impacted the industry, resulting in a significant reduction of vehicle failures and breakdowns. Most consumers do not anticipate a major breakdown of their vehicles prior to 100,000 miles or more. This is good for the consumer, but when a breakdown occurs with today’s vehicle technology, the repair costs can get expensive. When the economy struggles, consumers put off maintenance and mighat attempt to repair their vehicles themselves. The internet is a great informational tool, but also has plenty of misinformation by do-it-yourselfers. It can be a double-edged sword, especially without the proper tools and equipment. I have seen it many times.” And, to add insult to injury, there is currently a growing trend of consumers purchasing or leasing new vehicles, according to Browning. These factors, and the fact that over the years he has had colleagues suggest that Browning return to the aircraft industry, contributed to the idea he may need to make a change. “At the time, I was content operating G&M, ownership, self-employed. I still had that excitement,” said Browning. “The opportunity came around again last year, so I decided to pursue it and see where it would go. An offer was presented and I had to evaluate both options seriously. After servicing the community for 24 years, I felt I had one more career move in me and accepted the opportunity to go work in the aircraft industry again, this time for Northrop-Grumman. Do I miss G&M? Yes. I met a lot of people--my customers, vendors, business associates, community and business advocates ... I have a lot of great memories with no regret. I, too, was fortunate to find a buyer to carry on the tradition of G&M: John Write, a local resident, who is very excited, much like I was, to take over a business for another 25-plus years of servicing our community.” Don’t worry, Browning still has plenty of excitement. He is working on the F-35 Fighter Jet program in Palmdale. “I am busy learning the aircraft, the protocols of their business model at Northrop and fixing things, just like I’ve done since I can remember.” I guess one could safely say about Kevin Browning, “He always knew.”

Local Pharmacist Improves Health of Small Business Staff Every flu season we hear about free or low-cost shots at health fairs or other non-profit events. This year there is a man in Santa Clarita who is paying out thousands to make the shots available, and to an unusual niche market: small businesses. Moazzem H. Chowdhury, R.Ph. of Desert Drug Pharmacy is putting $10,000 toward flu vaccinations, offering all small business owners and employees the chance to receive the shots free of charge. “As a healthcare professional, that is the way I want to help other small business owners because they are the backbone of this City’s economy,” says Chowdhury. “I know what a struggle it can be for employees when they get the flu. I have always given free flu shots to my own employees, and recognize the benefits to keeping my support team healthy. It saves time, money, and is beneficial to people’s health to get the flu shot. I believe in giving back to the community that I love, and am blessed to live in with my family.” The first 250 Santa Clarita merchants and workers will receive flu shots for free, and those that follow will cost $10. According to Chowdhury, influenza annually costs the United States approximately $10.4 billion in direct costs for hospitalizations and outpatient visits for adults. He adds that the Center for Disease Control advises everyone six months of age and older to get a flu vaccine every season. “Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from influenza. Flu shots are approved for use in pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions,” says Chowdhury. “There is a small percentage of the population that should not get a flu shot, in particular people with allergies to eggs, people with a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, or people who have had a severe, life threatening reaction to a flu shot in the past. If someone is not sure if they should get a flu shot, I recommend that they consult with their doctor.” Those interested are asked to register in advance by filling out an information form and sending it in by fax or e-mail with the title “Attention: Flu Shot.” You will then be contacted by a Desert Drug Pharmacy representative with further details. Some restrictions may apply and vaccinations can be obtained by individuals 18 years and older. The 250 free shots are on a first-come, first-served basis. The email address is Desertdrugs@aol.com and the fax number is (661) 298-3116. For more information call Desert Drug Pharmacy at (661) 2983135.
