Marijuana - Heroin Connection The Debate Continues
By Josh Heath
Bob Wadsmith, a member of the Sheriff ’s Juvenile Intervention Team, claims he has seen a strong pattern of past-use of high-grade marijuana in the youth heroin cases he has handled. According to Wadsmith, the high-grade marijuana is making its way into kids’ hands due to California’s current medical marijuana system, which he claims allows people access to the drug, for sometimes bogus medical reasons. The easy availability of the pot makes it simpler for it to get to young people, Wadsmith said. “These kids, they get their hands on this new generation of marijuana, many times stronger stuff than what your dad had, and they want something more, so they move to heroin,’’ Wadsmith said. Neill Franklin, executive director of law enforcement against prohibition, vehemently disagreed with Wadsmith’s claims that high-grade marijuana can serve as a gateway drug to heroin, saying such views constituted fear mongering. As far as California’s medical marijuana laws, Franklin agreed that the system needs better regulation and oversight, but sees no issue with the higher potencies of the drug itself. ”Potent marijuana just means a quicker high,’’ Franklin said. Academia has not reached a verdict on the “marijuana as gateway drug’’ issue, with such prestigious institutions as Emory University and Yale coming out with individual studies that draw conclusions favoring both sides of the debate. A growing consensus, however, appears to be that use of marijuana, gateway drug or not, is not a favorable choice for young people. A panel of psychologists at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention this month presented several findings in support of getting marijuana out of the hands of youths.

Habitat For Humanity Partners With Home Depot To Build Homes For SCV Veterans
Sep 5 - Sep 11, 2014
Santa Clarita Teen Gets 45 Days, Serves 3 For Theft Charges by Perry Smith A Santa Clarita teen received a 45-day jail sentence for petty theft Friday, after requesting a trial on two charges for a Walmart burglary and losing the case.
By Melissa Lampert
Early construction of six homes being built for Santa Clarita Valley veterans and their families is set to begin Tuesday, officials announced. Team Depot, the Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer team, is partnering with Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley to build the homes as part of an 87-home veteran community near Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita, according to a Habitat news release.
Joseph Munoz, 19, of Canyon Country, was accused of going into the Walmart on Carl Boyer Drive with the intent to steal. “He was found guilty on two counts -petty theft and second degree commercial burglary,” said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. “Both (charges) are misdemeanors, and in both, the victim is Walmart.”
“The program is part of Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/ Santa Clarita Valley’s Enriched Neighborhood model,” said Sarah Steffen, a Habitat spokeswoman. “It gives them the chance to own a home, which gives them economic advantages… We give them skills and information so that they can also excel and become successful homeowners in Santa Clarita.”
Munoz was released Monday from the municipal court’s lockup after serving three days in the court’s jail.
Approximately 120 Team Depot volunteers will build frames, work on underground plumbing and establish foundations for the homes throughout the day.
Munoz was cited and released shortly after the theft, according to Sheriff ’s Department officials, who caught Munoz with about $100 worth of candy, and
He was immediately remanded into custody after the verdict.
One future home recipient, veteran and mother of seven, Veronica Lemus, plans to help volunteers with construction efforts.
$133 worth of men’s socks and underwear. He was also ordered to complete 10 days of Caltrans labor, a $150 penalty and to pay a public defender fee of $1,250. He was also given three years of summary probation, during which he is ordered to stay away from Walmart. The case was investigated by the COBRA unit of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station, which handles most juvenile- and gang-related crime at the station. The deputy district attorney in charge of the case’s prosecution declined to comment on the terms offered to the teen before trial. The maximum statutory penalty for petty theft is a fine not exceeding $1,000, or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or both.

The homes are expected to be completed in early 2015, Steffen said. Habitat officials created the 87-home Enriched Neighborhood in Santa Clarita in collaboration with the California Department of Veterans Affairs to provide safe housing for low-income Santa Clarita Valley veterans. To date, they have built 271 homes in both valleys, and are in the top five percent of Habitat affiliates nationwide to reach the goal of building more than 100 homes. Tuesday’s build is part of the Home Depot’s fourth annual Celebration of Service, when Team Depot groups across the nation plan to transform 500 veteran homes and facilities in a single day, according to the news release. This year’s Celebration of Service, in partnership with hundreds of nonprofit organizations, is set to transform more than 1,000 homes for veterans nationwide from September 11 through Veterans Day.

DOUG’S RANT !!!!!! I Rant, You Decide Not to confuse you, but I’m writing this first paragraph the day after I wrote the following rant. My daughterin-law just texted a photo of our oldest son asleep next to our two-month-old sleeping grandson. It’s a great picture, but all of sudden it hit home as to what’s really important in this life and how fragile it can be. It should be our top priority to make sure this world is a safe and prosperous place, free of fear, for them to live in the years to come. It gets one thinking about what life will be like for him and his two-year-old sister. I’m struck with sort of a sense of dread for them, if we don’t solve the myriad of problems that face us today. What bothers me the most is, a lot of these issues could be lessened or resolved with the right kind of leaders. I hope, as you read my sometimes blabbering rants, you keep in mind where I’m coming from! Scorched Earth Needed? As I sit down to write this rant, news just broke regarding the beheading of another kidnapped American reporter. It makes me sick to my stomach to watch what appears to be the same coward who murdered the reporter two weeks ago. I’ve ranted about this for three straight weeks now, but ISIS needs to be stopped dead in their tracks! Someone mentioned that I was a fear monger regarding this group, but come on, how can anyone not see the horrible consequences that will result if they are not stopped? There are now reports of ISIS training American members (remember, two Americans were killed recently while fighting for them) on how to build suicide bomb vests. It doesn’t take a lot to imagine these lunatics getting on a subway in New York, a train in Chicago, or even walking through LAX and blowing themselves up along with hundreds of others! And when you hear our President say he doesn’t have a strategy yet, it makes me just cringe. Sir, the strategy is quite simple. Do whatever it freaking takes to wipe these deranged coward idiots off the face of the earth! If it takes a “scorched earth” attack to
accomplish this, then so be it! As Lt. Col. Ralph Peters said, “We need to kill them and keep killing them until you kill the last one; then you kill his goat.” If I had my way, we would declare war on these worthless pieces of crap and be done with them! Oh, you say it will cost too much money? Well, then cut a bunch of spending on the stupidest crap imaginable to have the money to pay for this war, so we can provide the number one thing this country and its leader are supposed to, that is to provide safety and protection for all of its citizens!

• Sir, You Wear Me Out! I’ve got to quit getting in pissing matches with these lefty opinion writers of ours. It’s making me a bitter, angry human! Not really, but I have got to address Chris Ball’s contribution to The Gazette this week (see page 8). I actually agree with him on President Johnson and don’t have enough emotional energy to argue each of his points on the Bush Administration. I will say this: If Bush was in office today this ISIS crisis wouldn’t be going on, and if it was, there wouldn’t be any indecision about how, when or why they should be dealt with. Mr. Ball, war is a horrible, tragic and sad thing, but at times it is very necessary to preserve the safety and freedom of America, no matter the cost. You seem to forget that the majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle agreed with Mr. Bush about starting the war. We won that war and then your guy screwed it all up enabling this ISIS group to flourish—now putting all of us at risk!

And another thing---if this President of ours isn’t the worst ever, then he is tied for worst with whoever is! • Let’s review: • Has overseen an economy for six and a half years that has floundered and choked without giving any regard to maybe changing things to help it. • Has fostered an incredible increase in spending on domestic programs without a care in the world of the ramifications. • Food stamps, welfare, unemployment benefits and

similar programs have a huge and unprecedented number of Americans relying on the Federal Government for support as we veer towards bankruptcy. Unemployment has improved, but remains rather high. The biggest drag on the economy is the lowest labor participation rate in many years, which the President refuses to acknowledge. Lied to us regarding keeping our doctors, keeping our health plan and having our premiums go down as much as $2,500 per year. Has refused to have a special investigation—let alone asking his Attorney General—to investigate Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS scandal, despite overwhelming evidence that demands special investigations. Has encouraged a war on the coal industry, despite the fact it is an economic foundation for many communities and an affordable energy source for millions. -Has refused to authorize the Keystone pipeline, as well as other oil opportunities, even though study after study has shown the huge energy benefits for us, while protecting the environment. Mr. Obama makes public statements regarding local issues, while refusing to comment on issues such has gun violence among young people in major cities, a two-star general being killed in Afghanistan, or even the decorated Marine held unjustly in a Mexican jail. He has shown a complete ineptness in being able to sit with leaders from this country and leaders from all over the world to bring anyone together for meaningful compromise. He released five terrorist prisoners (who could have joined up with ISIS by now) for a soldier who deserted. By the way, why is it taking so long for the Army to conclude the investigation into this soldier, as to the desertion allegations? You don’t think Obama has anything to do with it, do you? I don’t think I need to dwell on his handling of foreign policy; it’s well documented, and all you have

to do is turn on the news! In other words, he just sucks at being President! Chris, you wrote this piece just to get me going and not because you really think he isn’t the worst president ever, right? Recent Headlines Catching My Attention: Obama Condemns Killing of Reporter: It’s scary and sad that these types of statements from him don’t mean a damn thing to these idiots. The Most Brilliant Man on Earth Doesn’t Have a Strategy Yet -- But He Doesn’t Believe We Can Defeat ISIS or Putin: Not much to add to this one … Why Sam is Out of Work: He is out of work because he isn’t a good enough football player to play in the NFL, regardless of his publically stated sexual preference! Quotes of the Week: “That’s right, ISIS, look at us; we’re living your dream. We’re the most powerful state in history, we influence the whole world, and all we talk about is how everything sucks now!” (Jon Stewart) “I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State, because of your insistence on continuing your bombings and ... on Mosul Dam, despite our serious warnings. So, just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.” (Man in video showing the beheading of Steven Sotloff) “Terrorism at this point is an evil force that must be fought with wisdom and speed. And if neglected, I’m sure after a month it will arrive in Europe and a month after that in America.” (Saudi King Abdullah) “This is a pitiful foreign policy and Barney Fife is in charge!” (Rep. Who is the Worst President, Really? We were sitting in Rotary this week, and during our social time we were discussing “world peace.” Well, sort of. I asked my friends who they thought was the worst ever American President. While they were too eager to answer, and still choking on their lunch, I offered my own opinions. I said, “Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re going to say.” It’s a good thing Doug wasn’t there. He doesn’t eat much, and he would have cut me off. What follows here are my digested opinions, written as the day cools down and lightly washed with grain alcohol. I can’t decide which was worse in my lifetime: George W. Bush or Lyndon Johnson. They both waged undeclared wars that drained our strength and killed lots of Americans. “What about Kennedy? He started Vietnam.” Yes, but Johnson escalated it. If Kennedy hadn’t died, then maybe somebody would have read the Pentagon Papers that foretold the futility of a war in Southeast Asia. McNamara kept that a secret from Johnson. When Daniel Ellsberg leaked it to the “NY Times,” it was too late. No, it was Johnson and McNamara who escalated Vietnam, an undeclared war that we lost. “What about Nixon? He also escalated Vietnam.” Yes, but Johnson started the escalation and made the bigger mess. Nixon may have bombed more civilians and wrecked the presidency, but Johnson killed more Americans and cleavered the country. Nixon just poured salt on it. Now we come to George W. Bush. While it’s true
that high-tech war tools, improved medivac, and open terrain lessened the American casualties, Iraq was still an unnecessary disaster. Dick Cheney led a conspiracy of lies, much like McNamara didn’t disclose the truth. I can say “Tonkin Gulf Resolution” and “yellow cake” in the same sentence. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and their friends bankrupted our country with their WMD lies and industrial-scale warmongering, which is why I place him near the top of worst American Presidents. In the aftermath, we find that Vietnam is now a peaceful, unified country and not an ally of China. Our military presence was a disaster. Our military absence has helped heal that country. Johnson was a failure, but Vietnam has healed, and we have healed. With scars. In the aftermath of Iraq, we find a civil war and a new government allied with Iran. Our military presence killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and bankrupted our own country. Bush was a failure, Iraq is still bleeding, and we are all still wounded. So, how to rate Bush over Johnson? If you count American casualties, Johnson was the worst President in our lifetime. If you measure overall damage, W. Bush was the worst. Yes, I know. Johnson and Bush had good intentions. They both said they were protecting American interests and promoting democracy. American prestige was at stake. But, war is hell, and the road to it is paved with good intentions. How does that mitigate the grief of families? Lies were told. War was waged. Patriots were killed and mutilated. America lost. Measure the results and not the intentions.
my friends who all drink their information from the same polluted well: “Obama is the worst President ever.” As I understand it, you blame Obama by Chris Ball for the huge national debt that keeps getting worse after the real estate and economic collapse of 2008. You also blame him for furthering socialism. But, even if I concede those points, how many Americans did Obama kill or maim in undeclared wars he initiated? Did Obama cause the Bush-era real estate bubble that was made possible by Wall Street thieves? Did Obama start spending trillions on an unfunded war? Was it Obama who spent American blood and treasure in a crusade to change the 5,000-year-old history of Mesopotamia? Didn’t Bush evacuate his office, leaving a big stinking pile of merde? (Pardonnez mon français.) If you really think that Obama measures up as the worst President ever, what kind of yardstick are you using? Thinking only from purified well water (mixed with distilled whole grains and only a trace of arsenic), LBJ and W. Bush top my list for general mayhem and damage to the body of America. PS: Nothing here should be misconstrued as any disrespect for our valorous servicemen and women or to diminish the appreciation of their service.
Now, I know that you have opinions about our current President. There is a constant bellyache among **The Views expressed in this column are those of the writer, not necessarily those of Valley Publications.
Convicted Sex Offender from Valencia Sentenced to 12 Years After more than a year since the arrest of Yale Yurman, 71, of Valencia, he was sentenced to 12 years in state prison for one count of annoying a child under the age of 18, with a prior sex crime conviction, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Yurman was accused of following Santa Clarita Valley children and taking their pictures without permission, according to a news release by the DA’s office. Some accusations said he was following girls as young as six years old, then taking pictures of their legs and back side. Yurman later admitted to using the pictures for sexual gratification, according to the news release. “Twelve years (in prison) was appropriate for the conduct,” said Emily Cole, deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County. Yurman had 19 previous strikes on his record, all of which he received from a 1987 case, when the laws for sex crimes were more lenient, Cole added. He received a 30-year sentence for those crimes, serving 15 years before being released.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station detectives were alerted to Yurman’s activities last June by Target loss-prevention officers, who received a report from customers and contacted deputies with their information. Deputies were told a man was following a young girl and videotaping her while she was walking around inside Target located on Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia. Through proactive work by Target’s loss prevention, detectives were able to identify a suspect, said Deputy Josh Dubin, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station. Detectives served a search warrant in the 23700 block of Hickory Court in Valencia. Residents of the Belcaro housing community in that neighborhood contacted KHTS over concerns with Yurman’s alleged behavior. Yurman has several known aliases, according to the Megan’s Law website, which include Steve Simonian, Dale Orin Pettit and Joseph Abendana. He has several convictions listed on the Megan’s Law site, including annoying/molesting a child under the age of 18, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age by force or fear, and
oral copulation with a minor under 14 years of age by use of force or fear. Evidence was recovered which showed the suspect had been following young girls and videotaping them in Santa Clarita areas including Target, Walmart and Real Life Church in Valencia. California’s Megan’s Law provides the public with certain information on the whereabouts of sex offenders so that members of our local communities may protect themselves and their children. The law is not intended to punish the registrant and specifically prohibits using the information to harass or commit any crime against a registrant. Shakespeare Festival Gets Validation with County Grant The Los Angeles Arts Commission has awarded a grant to the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival. Called an OGP (Organizational Grant Program), the award has a twoyear cycle and is designed to assist in the growth of arts organizations. The Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival is inviting the public to support the cause by speaking up and by sipping wine. The City of Santa Clarita is conducting a survey on a number of topics, including the top three amenities its residents would like to have locally. The theatre staff is requesting that supporters speak up and answer that question with a request for the construction of the Rivendale Park and Amphitheater. The survey can be located at www.santa-clarita.com. If you like wine with your art, you may be interested in the 7th Annual Art & Wine Gala on Saturday, September 27 at TPC in Valencia. It is the largest and most exclusive arts fundraising event in the Santa Clarita community. Tickets are $250 per person and proceeds will help fund educational programming in local schools and help with administrative costs at Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival. Youth Grove Evening of Remembrance Honors the Lost Local young people who have lost their lives on the road are at the heart of the City of Santa Clarita’s “9th Annual Youth Grove Evening of Remembrance.” Organizers plan to honor youth and young adults ages 24 and under who were victims of traffic accidents to emphasize safe driving. The event will be held on Wednesday, September 10 at Central Park, located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road and will begin with the inaugural “Walk of Remembrance” at 6:45 p.m., followed by the Evening of Remembrance at 7:15 p.m. “Motor vehicle collisions remain the number one cause of death for teens, with texting and driving accounting for more than 3,000 teen fatalities
each year,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste. “The City of Santa Clarita and the Blue Ribbon Task Force host the annual Youth Grove Evening of Remembrance to honor the young Santa Clarita lives lost due to traffic-related incidents, and remind the entire community about the importance of being safe, sober and focused behind the wheel.” For the first time, the event will begin with the Walk of Remembrance. The entire community is invited to take part in the walk to show support and walk alongside friends and neighbors who lost loved ones behind the wheel.
of Santa Clarita and the Blue Ribbon Task Force. The halfacre memorial is home to 91 individual pillars, each with a plaque bearing the name of a young life lost in a traffic-related incident. The pillars surround a central monument urging the community to “Know More” about safe driving habits and to pledge that “No More” young lives will be lost behind the wheel. Sports Highlights High School Football The high school football season started with a thud for three teams from the Foothill League. It started with a bang for the two newest teams in the Foothill League. Hart, the reigning CIF Southern Section Northern Division champion, lost on the road to Chino Hills, 63-48. The Indians lost in a painful way too, blowing a 21-point lead. Hart moved into the newly formed West Valley Division and was ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section preseason poll. Chino Hills is also in the West Valley Division. This could be a playoff preview. On the plus side, Hart quarterback Brady White had a record-setting night in the opener. He threw for a school record 537 yards in the loss. Another positive note is that receiver Trent Irwin had 238 receiving yards. But it doesn’t get any easier for Hart in its next game. The Indians take on Chaminade, the reigning CIF Division II state champions. West Ranch opened the season with an impressive 42-17 win over San Marcos. West Ranch quarterback Chase Killingsworth had a nice night passing. He threw five touchdown passes, three to Brendan Moskal. More importantly, Killingsworth had no interceptions. Golden Valley opened the season with a 45-17 blowout win over Granada Hills. Golden Valley doesn’t get to boast a winning record very often. The team and its fans better enjoy it while it lasts. The Golden Valley ground game was running in full force. Three Golden Valley running backs combined for five touchdowns on the ground. Shane Tamura had three touchdowns and 104 rushing yards on 11 carries. Saugus, the early season favorite behind Hart and Valencia to earn automatic playoff bids in the Foothill League, lost to Simi Valley in a heartbreaker. The
Centurions lost to Simi, 48-44, at College of the Canyons. Canyon stumbled out of the gate big time against Westlake, 44-17. Canyon was down, 37-3, at one point and never challenged the Marmonte League powerhouse. The Valencia High football team did not play in the first week of high school football. But they are ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division preseason poll. The first week of high school football in the Santa Clarita Valley unveiled plenty of surprises. Here’s a look at how the rest of the season might play out. Hart is still the top dog in the Foothill League. The Indians have a tough schedule before the Foothill League season starts. Hart might be 0-2 after playing Chaminade on Friday night. But the Indians could rattle off their next eight games in a row. Hart is still the favorite to win the Foothill League championship. Valencia is the odds on favorite to finish behind Hart in the Foothill League. Heck, they are talented enough to beat Hart for the Foothill League title. The real battle in the Foothill League will be for third place. Saugus looked like the early favorite, after making an unlikely run to the CIF Southern Section Northern Division semifinals last season. But, Saugus is off to a bad start. All of a sudden West Ranch looks like it’s a team to be reckoned with. If West Ranch is as explosive as it was in the first week, the rest of the Foothill League will be in for a surprise. Canyon has plenty of talent, but looks like it lacks experience. The Westlake coaches said Canyon’s defense presented some match-up problems. Westlake wasn’t able to run all the offensive plays it wanted to. In that regard, there is hope for Canyon. The defense might be good enough to keep the team in games. The offense needs to score some touchdowns though.
Golden Valley has a nice win against Granada Hills. The team is still in search of its first Foothill League win. Baby steps for these Grizzlies. One win in league would make their season, but they are far from being a playoff team. … The Santa Clarita Christian football team is off to a hot start, especially quarterback Jonathan Saavedra. He accounted for nine touchdowns in Santa Clarita Christian’s 68-20 win over Lutheran from Chula Vista in their season opener. Saavedra set school records with 529 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns. He rushed for two touchdowns and 28 yards. He accounted for 557 yards of total offense all on his own. Cameron Lewis caught four touchdown passes. Freshman Michael Uribe caught two passes, both for touchdowns, and had 107 receiving yards. …
High School Volleyball The Valencia Girls Volleyball team is ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A preseason poll. Valencia opens its season against Notre Dame Academy from Los Angeles on Sept. 8. Aliso Niguel is the No. 1 ranked team in the Southern Section Division 1A preseason poll. The Santa Clarita Christian Girls team is ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division 5AA preseason poll. Santa Clarita Christian opens against Vasquez High on Thursday. Santa Clarita Man Takes Stand Against Bullying With Yeti Costume Tako said. “I really believed it. Why would I think I could start a business and be successful?” Tako then decided it was his mission to spread awareness about bullying, eventually coming up with his imposing, furry character to teach children about the effects of bullying and how to overcome being bullied. The character’s name is Junga, a dancing yeti. “I was in a short film called ‘Abominable.’ I played the father Yeti. It was a cute film, only five minutes long,” Tako said. A Santa Clarita man proved he will go to great lengths to further his fight against bullying. To Stephen Tako, 48, dressing up as a Yeti is an act worth taking, if it makes the message clear. “So many talented people are beaten down and feel that they are not worthy of things and they’re not capable,” Tako said. “They don't rock the boat, they don't go out and don’t do anything extraordinary.” Tako has lived in and around the Santa Clarita Valley for nearly two decades. He has experienced bullying and endured the long-lasting effects that bullying has. “’A Damaged Child’ is the first chapter I wrote in my book, ‘Motivated To Act.’ The chapter is about the bullying I endured as a kid and the terrible relationship I had with my own father; how it really did beat me down, how it made me settle for less than I deserved in life because I didn’t think I could get anywhere,”
“I asked the crew if they would film me dancing to the song ‘Hungry Like A Wolf,’ and I did a whole big dance number for the crew and everyone was busting up laughing watching me dance,” Tako said. “I’m 6-feet, 7-inches tall and the yeti costume was made specially to fit me, so I asked for it. He developed a character (named Junga) with an antibullying message who is judged by his scary, monsterlike looks, but he is just a nice, friendly character who wants to dance, enjoy life and doesn't want to be hunted. “He is the mascot for anyone who feels they're judged because of color of their skin or because they have different choices,” said Tako.
Do-it-yourself websites cost less, but they require that you or your staff expend time to set it up and maintain it. Hiring a professional web designer is the other option. Beware—just because someone advertises that he/she is a web designer does not guarantee that the person has the proper credentials and work experience. Before speaking to anyone, know what you want your website to achieve. Ask yourself: • How will you use the website? • Will it be your customer’s main connection to your company? • Will it be a teaser to get people to find out more about your company? • How many pages will it include? • What will it say? • What will the pages look like? When speaking with web designers, ask to see samples of their other work, such as pages / websites they have created. Make sure their style matches what you have in mind. Then be very specific about what you want. Don’t assume that the web designer can read your mind.

“I could picture myself going out to elementary schools as Junga and reading that story to kids,” Tako said. “I really want to go to all the middle schools and high schools and give talks as myself.” He is also writing another book, this time for children. The book’s title is "Junga, the Dancing Yeti" and Tako hopes to have the book published for the upcoming Literacy and Arts Festival put on by the SCV Education Foundation. He attended the event last year. “As an actor, I worked on the film “Oz the Great and Powerful” as a witch’s guard,” he said. “When I was on set, I thought about Dorothy’s adventure on the yellow brick road, and then thought about my own adventure. “Here I am in Hollywood, on this beautiful set, standing next to James Franco,” Tako continued. “I look down and I'm standing on the yellow brick road, where so many things are possible. You have to rock the boat, go out and explore and do the things you want to do.”
When Tako is not in character or making videos with Junga, he makes Youtube videos, where he interviews
Hiring a Website Designer A website is your business portal to your customers. It has to appear professional, function well and be easy to navigate. professionals and everyday people who deal with bullying. Tako plans on hosting his Youtube show, “Tako Talk,” and making videos with Junga in the future, but his goal is to speak to kids and teens about bullying at schools across Southern California.

Here are some other tips: Ask for references. If someone you know recommends a web designer, find out what it was that individual liked about the designer and determine if it meets your needs. And don’t let the fact that the designer isn’t local be a stumbling block. The internet and telephone are wonderful inventions. Check out a web designer’s site.I s it attractive? Easy to navigate? Organized logically? Are there any broken links? How quickly does the site load? Look at the portfolio (examples of other web sites for previous clients). Do you like what you see? What can the web designer do? Does he or she only design websites, or can the artist do dynamic development and database design? The best developers know how to create a site, maintain it, market it and promote it. Does this person do it all? Look for customer testimonials. Get the company’s contact information. Lines of Communication. How easy is it to communicate directly with the web designer? The contact information page should make it clear. When you communicate with him or her, make sure it’s not just through emails. You’ll want to talk to the person directly to gauge his or her personality and see if you can bounce ideas off of each other. Ask as many questions as possible and see if you like the answers. Some questions you should ask are: Who will own the website? Who will maintain it, and at what cost? Find the best price. Many web designers don’t post their prices online—don’t let that stop you. Contact them directly, give them a few parameters or specifications, and they’ll usually give you an

estimate, which you can either accept or refuse, or propose a counteroffer. Find out if the designer requires a percentage up front and what the project payment terms are. Read the fine print. Insist on a contract. It protects you and the web designer. Make sure the contract includes deadline guarantees, the designer’s availability, how much more you’ll pay for changes to the project, and whether the web designer will take care of programming bugs that you discover once the work is done. Also find out who will own the website once it is complete. It should belong to you, not the designer. Ask for the source code—it is written in all related files. Finally, if you’re in a regulated industry, make sure all legal and compliance issues are included. Web designers come in all shapes and sizes, depending on your project, budget and timeline. Larger web firms offer a staff with varied skills and an enhanced body of work, but often charge more and can be more bureaucratic. Smaller firms or a freelance web designer often charge less for work and offer better one-on-one communication. Warren Schultz is the owner of Tap Solutions. Restaurant Review Salt Creek Grille Saturday evening in the City of Santa Clarita was just beautiful—clear skies, lots of people out and about, lots to do and see and warm temperatures. That being said, early that afternoon I telephoned some old buddies (longtime buddies, not so old) from work, Tony and Elaine, Andrea, Ellie and Patty, and asked if they would like to get together. Everyone agreed to meet at the Salt Creek Grille in Valencia for drinks, great food and fellowship. We all gathered at Salt Creek Grille at 6:00 p.m. There the six of us began a fine evening. The restaurant is upscale with comfortable booths in the dining room and the front bar. The booths in the front bar are along the wall and windows. Those booths offer a nice perch for “people watching.” The Patio offered fine tables for dining and a bar as well. We decided to eat in the dining room. The room was clean and fresh with many patrons. Our booth and table were roomy and met the needs of six adults. Once we were graciously seated by the hostess, we were promptly attended to by our server, Caitlin. She was attentive throughout the evening and had a very nice sense of humor. Caitlin soon asked about our drink preferences. There were almost as many preferences as there were people in our party. One member of the group ordered white wine, another member chose a martini with two olives stuffed with bleu cheese, another a dirty martini, another a “dry” martini—shaken not stirred—and another a “house” specialty, a Christini martini. The lady’s martini was made with raspberry vodka, Chambord, and champagne. The rim of the glass was coated with sugar and a fresh raspberry perched on it for garnish. In addition, she requested extra berries.
To quote her, “I would like an obscene number of extra berries.” Caitlin accommodated her. There may have been a pint of berries on the table. I chose a Moscow Mule from Grandpa’s Medicine Cabinet. As we visited and enjoyed our libations we also enjoyed watching the staff addressing the needs of the patrons in a very busy restaurant. They appeared to have a smooth system in place. As our drinks became half empty, Caitlin asked if we wanted another round. Responsibly, we declined. However, we were ready to order our meals and Caitlin happily took our orders. We had many questions about meal preparation and so on. Caitlin answered them all quite well until we asked how many shrimp were presented in the Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp appetizer. The answer was five but there were six of us. Somehow six were nicely presented. By the way, the shrimp wrapped in bacon was scrumptious! Ordering dinner was a challenge, as we had much to choose from, we were all hungry, and each menu item’s description was very appealing. Our salads consisted of five wedge salads and one house salad. The wedge salads were wedges of iceberg lettuce with Pancetta bacon, peppercorns, tomatoes and bleu cheese dressing. The House salad included greens, Granny Smith apple slices, Gorgonzola cheese, and glazed walnuts with Balsamic vinaigrette. Each salad was beautifully presented, flavorful and refreshing. The main courses consisted of one Ahi Tuna Stack, sashimi style, stacked with avocado and cucumber with wasabi and ginger soy. There were two orders of Porterhouse Stroganoff, sliced filet and New York steak, caramelized onions, shiitake mushrooms, Pappandella pasta with cabernet
By Ben Oakley demi-glace and sour cream. The final three orders were Salt Creek Grille Meat Loaf; filet mignon and New York Steak mushroom demi-glace, garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli. Each meal was top quality, expertly prepared, presented artfully, full of flavor, filling and satisfying. I believe all of the items on the menu were reasonably priced. One mishap occurred during the meal. Our dinners came out of the kitchen sooner than we were ready for them. Caitlin realized the problem and graciously and quickly remedied the situation. Dessert presented another challenge for Caitlin— we all wanted “Ultimate Carrot Cake.” However, we wanted one slice split between the six of us. Puzzled, Caitlin told us she was doubtful she could fill our request. She checked with the dessert chef and one slice was suddenly presented and served as six. A roaring round of applause and cheer was given to Caitlin and the dessert chef. Tony and Elaine, Andrea, Ellie, Patty and I all enjoyed our evening and meal at the Salt Creek Grille. Caitlin and the entire staff went out of their way to accommodate and ensure we had a great dining experience!!! I will return to the Salt Creek Grille and maybe take Gavin and Isabella. Perhaps Brady will join us. We will have to ask his Mom. The Salt Creek Grille is located at 24415 Town Center Drive in Valencia. 5 out of 5 Acorns
Business of the Week DeZignThis.com It is a clever way to obtain the best graphic design or logo possible—hold a contest. That is what John and Paula de Vos do for their clients at DeZignThis.com—help customers connect with designers who “compete” to create the winning logos or other designs. New customers register for free on the website, and a contest for the job begins. Once a designer is declared the winner, the client will work directly with that designer for any revisions. The files come in various formats, ensuring designs can be applied to different media, from business cards to T-shirts and banners.
Paula has been in the accounting and business field for many years, so she handles customer contact and live chat on the website. “Customer service is our NUMBER 1 PRIORITY!” says Paula.
Opened earlier this year, DeZignThis.com operates entirely on the internet, from the Agua Dulce couple’s home office. “This is a fun and easy way to get exactly the right design for your company,” explains Paula de Vos. “We also do logo revisions and have partnered with a company that does website design so we could offer that as well.” John de Vos has been a professional graphic designer for many years from his native country of Holland, bringing an expertise in graphic design and client support, guiding customers in the process of finding the best design options.

Hate Crimes and California Law By Robin Sandoval On Monday, August 25 a man was assaulted upon leaving a restaurant on McBean Parkway in Santa Clarita. According to reports, the 24-year-old man was eating at the restaurant and, upon leaving, was followed outside by two males. The men followed the victim to his car, where they allegedly assaulted him, hitting the victim repeatedly in the face while shouting racial epithets. The two suspects are described as white males between the ages of 23 and 27, from 5’8” to 5’9” tall, with shaved heads and tattooed arms. The investigation is being described as a possible hate crime, and the Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s Station deputies are interested in anyone with information regarding the two suspects. According to California Hate Crimes Law, a person’s motivation for committing a crime can influence the sentence if he or she is convicted. Hate Crimes are stated under California Penal Codes -- 422.55, 422.6, 422.7 and 422.75 PC. What the laws describe is that it is illegal to commit a crime against someone based on their religion, race, sexual orientation, nationality, gender or disability and that the State is allowed to severely increase the defendant’s punishment if they are found guilty of doing so. A crime doesn’t necessarily have to be violent or destructive in nature in order to be classified as a hate crime. Additionally, one doesn’t necessarily have to violate any other California Law in order to be charged with a hate crime. As an example, let’s say it’s election day and someone is volunteering at a polling place in the city. Whenever people of one certain race show up to vote, the volunteer gives them incorrect information as to how and where to vote.
In this case, the volunteer isn’t physically harming these people or being rude in any way. However, their deliberate actions are interfering with a citizens’ right to vote, which is protected under the U.S. Constitution. As a result, the volunteer could be charged with a hate crime even though they didn’t actually break any laws. Hate crimes are typically charged as misdemeanors if they involve damaging a person’s property or infringing on their civil rights based upon one of the characteristics listed above. If convicted, a person can face possible sentences of: misdemeanor probation, a fine of up to $5,000, up to one year in county jail, and/or up to 400 hours of community service. If the hate crime is charged as a felony, the possible penalties can take a pretty big jump. They can include: felony probation, 16 months to 3 years in California State prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000. In both of the above cases, the penalties described are possible if the crime the defendant committed was a misdemeanor under California Law. If the crime an individual commits is a felony, and is deemed by a jury to also be a hate crime, then under California Penal Code 422.75 PC the sentence could be significantly increased. Depending on the circumstances of the crime, an additional 1-4 years in State Prison could be added to the sentence. Robin Sandoval is a California Licensed Bail Bondsman and owner of SCV Bail Bonds. Lean to the Left
By Sylvia Turner
End of the Whirled At the risk of drawing more attention to it, I just have to address the end-of-the-world scenario Doug outlined in his rant last week. I don’t know where to begin—there is so much to refute. For those who missed it, Doug’s Rant went like this: “I’m just suggesting you take a look at what the Bible says about the end times and keep in mind what is going on in the world today...” From there, he ticked off a list of 14 statements in the Bible’s book of Revelation about the last days, which Doug is linking to modern times. First of all, which generation did not predict the end times? In the 20th century we had Hal Lindsey, Oral Roberts, and numerous televangelists, all with a different end-of-the-world date and time.
How about all those groups growing their own wheat and building up a stockpile of staples in wait for the end times in the ‘70s? We had major power Rome, where Caesar’s coin— stamped, another word for “mark” (of the beast)— controlled more than just the bottom line on your taxes. And isn’t Adolph Hitler a good example of an anti-Christ? As for Noah and his ark, the argument only works on those who agree to a fundamental premise—that the Bible is a source worth reading. And out of those people, most are aware that stories such as those are allegories … and that the earth is not a mere 6,000 years old, by the way. As for the statement in Revelation, “There will be wars and rumors of wars,” Harvard psychologist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker researched the his-
tory of violence on earth, which led to his book, “The Better Angels of Our Nature.” Through factual examples he reveals that we live in the most peaceful time on earth. Haven’t you heard, Doug, about the cruelty of tribal peoples (sacrificing babies and virgins), slave owners (beatings and splitting up families), cavalier slayings in Medieval Europe—all part of the data in Pinker’s book. He says that tribal warfare was nine times as deadly as war and genocide in the 20th century. Okay, no spoiler alert necessary—just more evidence that history shows it is foolish for generation after generation to recycle the old alarmist, sky-is-falling mentality that “the world is going to hell in a hand basket.” The Views expressed in this column are those of the writer, not necessarily those of Valley Publications.

Staying Focused, Organized, and Disciplined In Your Business Connie Ragen Green Ralph wrote in to ask me if I have difficulty in staying focused and organized because I work from home. It’s an excellent question, and one that requires a discussion about the importance of organization, focus, and discipline in your life. This is especially true for entrepreneurs. It may appear at first glance that people like myself, who work from home or from wherever in the world we happen to be, have a completely unorganized life and business. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you do not have the discipline to run your life like a business, running a business from home will be a disaster. Furthermore, once you accept the notion of a “disciplined life” everything else in your life will fall into place more easily. When I first started my online business from my spare bedroom at my home in Saugus, I had not a clue as to how to spend my time each day. I had transitioned from working as an employee (I was a classroom teacher for 20 years) to having total and complete autonomy from rules, schedules, and deadlines. I thought this was the best thing in the world at the time, especially the part about not getting up in the morning until I felt like it. Within two months I realized I was floundering in my attempts to be a successful entrepreneur and decided to make a schedule for myself. It was a simple one that allowed me to begin working at my desk at eight each morning and to end at four. I took 30-minute breaks at 10:00 and 2:00 and had lunch from 12:00 until 1:00. This gave me six full hours to work each day. My results were excellent with this schedule and I also felt better about the discipline it was giving me. People in my life began respecting the idea that I was actually working at home and could not be interrupted during the day. Also, spending time each morning just thinking about my business gave me the focus and clarity to create the exact business and life I wanted. Here is what I am recommending: • Spend 10 minutes every day in quiet contemplation, focusing on what you want to achieve • Use a “To-Do” list to calendar out the tasks and activities you need to do • Stick to a schedule every day so you will have the time to work uninterrupted
I spend my ten minutes early each morning, before turning on my computer or doing anything else. It allows me to clear my head and to focus on the work I need to do, and to remember why I am grateful to be working from home. This grounds me in a way that has helped me to achieve results in many areas of my life over the past eight years. I use a mini legal pad, about five by eight inches, to write down everything that needs to get done each day. I refer to this as a “dynamic” to-do list, because new items are always being added and others completed. When something is finished I simply draw a line through it. If I delegate it to someone else (one of my favorite things to do!) I make an arrow across the page to the name of the person who will be getting it done. My schedule is not too flexible at this point. I now write from about 7 a.m. until 9 a.m., check email and make calls until 9:30 and work on my latest product or course until around 11:00. Then I am out in the community, volunteering and connecting with others and going to appointments and meetings. My afternoons are quiet because I tend to have lower energy at this time of day, and evenings are for family. Having clarity and focus in your life is crucial for business success. Organizing your work space and tasks will make everything much easier every day. Maintain a simple schedule and discipline yourself to accomplish everything you set out to do. Connie Ragen Green lives in Saugus and has been working exclusively on the Internet since 2006. Find out more by visiting http://HugeProfitsTinyList.com and download an audio recording for 2014 at http:// NewRulesforOnlineMarketing.com. Questions? Email Connie at crgreencrgreen@yahoo.com and be sure to put “Home Business Question” in the subject line. Your question and answer will be included in a future article.

Locals Hope to Alter High-Speed Rail Plans By Martha Michael A letter and email campaign from Canyon Country residents objecting to the high-speed rail project will continue for another week. While more than 70 individuals have already corresponded with California High-Speed Rail officials, a local group of citizens called the High-Speed Rail Task Force is requesting that all local citizens become a part of their campaign to limit the scope of the government project. The authorities receiving the written comments are printed below, and letters are encouraged to be sent by this Friday, September 12. The California High-Speed Rail Authority is responsible for planning, designing, building and the operation of the first high-speed rail system in the nation. California high-speed rail aims to connect the mega-regions of the state. By 2029, the system will run from San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin in under three hours at speeds capable of over 200 miles per hour, according to the government entity’s website, www.hsr.ca.gov. In an email communication sent from the Sand Canyon Homeowners Association, primary points suggested for a letter campaign to the High-Speed Rail officials with desired changes to the plan include: A. The preferred alignment is direct from Burbank to Palmdale, bypassing the Santa Clarita Valley altogether. B. Of the two alignments being considered through SCV, the tunnel extension alignment causes less environmental and community damage than the above ground alignment.
C. We definitely oppose the above ground alignment: • Too close to two schools, putting over 1,000 elementary school children in danger and the sound will negatively impact learning in the classroom. • Eliminates a community church. • Eliminates houses and negatively impacts neighborhoods. • Sound Impacts would be negative for all residents throughout the East end of Santa Clarita. • Visual impacts would be negative for all residents throughout the East end of Santa Clarita. • Eliminates a job center approved for our community. Those interested in joining their efforts are told to write: Mr. Mark A. McLoughlin Director of Environmental Services California High Speed Rail Authority Southern California Regional Office 700 N Alameda, Room, 3-532 Los Angeles, CA 90012 Emails can be sent to: Mr. Mark A. McLoughlin Subject Line: “Palmdale to Burbank Section EIR/EIS” palmdale_burbank@hsr.ca.gov SCHOA is requesting that residents also “blind CC” scvtaskforce@gmail.com, and are directed to contact Michael Hogan at the same email with any questions.
The website for all information relating to the Palmdale to Los Angeles project section is http://www.hsr.ca.gov/Programs/Statewide_Rail_ Modernization/Project_Sections/palmdale_losangeles.html.

“Highly Recommended”! *YELP review “I am an M.D. Radiologist and have severe degenerative disease of my neck. I have been under the care of Dr. Stan for over one year. My neck pain and limitations of movement have virtually disappeared through his therapy and my continued ued home therapy. I am very satisfied with my care and highly recommend Dr. Stan for chiropracticc needs.” “After being diagnosed with possible fusion andd having a neck that was rated by one specialist as one of the worst he’s ever seen, I went to Dr. r. Stan Henderson. I was suffering from scale 8 pain and nd could hardly lift my arm. Within a couple of weeks eks I started noticing more mobility and less pain. Within ithin a few months, I’m back to my regular regimen of weight training.” *YELP reviews
