Small Changes, Big Impact
Sometimes as designers, we talk too much about the overhaul of an entire space: taking a room, or an entire house, down to the studs and putting it back together. But what if you don’t have the time or budget for a large-scale reno? It is possible to make a big design impact by focusing on small areas of your home:
Edit, Edit, Edit: This may be an unpopular opinion, but you must get rid of some stuff. We are all living with too much. Trust me, you don’t absolutely need all of the things taking up space in your home. Oftentimes, part of what we dislike about our spaces is that they feel cluttered and overwhelming. What we love about looking at photos in magazines and on Instagram is that they look spacious and unencumbered. This look is absolutely achievable in your home, but you must make a donation pile and let go of the things in your life that are merely taking up space. Think of it like letting your house open up and breathe.
Revamp Your Entryway: I am very opinionated about entryways. I believe they should absolutely be functional and beautiful at the same time. When I see an entryway that’s perfectly styled, but has no place to actually put the practical things, I immediately want to change it. The reality for so many of us is that we come into our homes with the evidence of our day in tow: work bags, jackets, keys, shoes, mail, and backpacks. The most impactful thing you can do in these spaces is to create organized solutions for the things you carry. Yes, adding a mirror, console table, and floral arrangement will always help with aesthetics but don’t forget about a basket for shoes, hooks for coats and backpacks, and a tray for those keys and mail. When everything has a spot to land, your home feels better.
Style Open Shelving with Intention: After you edit, the first rule to styling open shelving is to take everything off and be ruthless about what makes the cut when putting it back together. Play with height: Place objects on a stack of books, lean small art behind items for visual interest, and cluster like items such as candlesticks into groups of three. The rule of thumb for open shelving is to keep it sparse and keep it balanced.
Create a Lighting Story: Never underestimate the power of lighting. Simply changing your lightbulbs to a warmer hue can dramatically shift a room’s atmosphere. Try this quick trick: Replace cool, harsh bulbs with soft white or warm white bulbs. You’ll notice an immediate change everything feels cozier and more intentional. My favorite quote I see consistently pop up on Instagram is “Happy lamp o’clock to all who celebrate!” I love lamps, particularly those that allow for three-way bulbs. You can dramatically change the feel of a room by putting overhead lights on dimmers and switch-
ing over to three-way bulbs. It instantly creates a moody evening moment, perfect for relaxing and listening to music.
Create That Cozy Nook You’ve Always Wanted: I will always vividly remember a moment early in my career when I was helping a friend reimagine their lake house space. There was a wood-burning stove placed in an odd corner of the cabin. I suggested we put an occasional chair and basket of blankets next to it, orienting it toward the lake to enjoy the view. I was met with laughter and doubt: they didn’t think anyone would ever use it. I did it anyway, and it is one of the most frequented spots in the whole space. The owners and guests love curling up for a moment, or an afternoon, to enjoy a book or fall asleep looking at the view. Don’t be afraid to create a space for a specific purpose you might be surprised how often it gets used.
In Closing: Design isn’t just about grandeur or expense; it’s about creating spaces that support how you live and make you feel good in your surroundings. The next time you feel stuck or uninspired by your home, start small. And remember: Your home should evolve with you. Sometimes, the smallest changes can spark the biggest joy.

A Glamorous Granada Legends Gala
Glamour was on display at The Granada Theatre’s Ninth Annual Legends Gala, where upper-crust Santa Barbarans gathered to celebrate artists and art-supportive organizations. On the Granada stage, guests enjoyed a vibrant three-course meal by Seasons Catering with libations from Pence Vineyards, as Master of Ceremonies Andrew Firestone sang the praises of this year’s honorees: The John C. Mithun Foundation; the Lobero Theatre; and Nir Kabaretti, music and artistic director of the Santa Barbara Symphony.
The John C. Mithun Foundation focuses its philanthropic efforts on supporting the important marriage of arts and education, providing funding for youth-based performance initiatives, including the continuation of musical education in schools. The foundation was introduced by Dan Oh, board president of the Goleta Education Foundation. Oh described John C. Mithun governing trustees Mercedes Millington and Susan M. Torrey as “visionaries whose generosity and passion have illuminated the performing arts across our community,” praising their steadfast belief in the transformative powers of education and the arts. “This spirit is what makes Susan, Mercedes, and Jack legends,” said Oh. “Giving is not about programs; it’s about restoring joy and possibility for generations to come.”
In her remarks, Millington, whose career began as an elementary school educator, said that the performing arts are something everyone can participate in not only on the stage, but in the audience, as well. “It’s something we all need,” she said. “It’s not just food to eat and it’s not just going to school we need to feed our souls.”
Lobero Theatre Foundation boardmember Amy MacLeod introduced the award for the Lobero Theatre, specifically thanking recently retired executive director David Asbell for guiding the Lobero with vision and passion during his 29-year tenure. Firestone embraced the Lobero as a sister theater to the Granada, noting it as an important contributor in making downtown Santa Barbara a remarkable center for the arts.
The final honor of the evening went to Santa Barbara Symphony Director Nir Kabaretti, whom Firestone described as having all the necessary elements for a great conductor: “skill, pizzazz, presence, and a great head of hair.” Kabaretti was introduced by Montecito Bank & Trust chair and CEO Janet Garufis, who recalled Kabaretti
telling the Symphony board to consider raising compensation for musicians. “It’s not just the right thing to do,” he’d said, “it’s an investment in the artistic quality in everything we do.” Kabaretti accepted the honor, thanking the community for being supportive and appreciative, and declaring that the S.B. Symphony can dream bigger with the Granada as their musical home.
Interspersed amid the speeches, guests were treated to performances from local musicians and an excerpt from State Street Ballet’s production of The Little Mermaid. Dancers placed throughout the Granada’s various levels waved fabric like sea fronds, creating an underwater coral-scape illusion for their performance. Vocal powerhouse Miriam Dance, accompanied by local musicians (including Granada chair Palmer Jackson Jr. of the Doublewide Kings), brought Joni Mitchell’s “Coyote” to life in between courses. (They returned later in the pro-
gram to lead a sing-along of “I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends.”)
The Legends Gala spotlights purveyors of culture in Santa Barbara those providing funding, venues, direction, education, and participation in the performing arts. It also serves as an important reminder that if Santa Barbara wants to maintain its current breadth of cultural options, these organizations need real support profit from ticket sales alone cannot keep the lights on at the Symphony, the Opera, CAMA, or any of the smaller, more community-based artists’ offerings we enjoy.

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK
I recently came across an article in REALTOR® Magazine that really caught my eye. It was all about how showcasing energy efficiency is becoming a bigger priority when selling homes. That got me thinking about what that means here in Santa Barbara, where our climate and environment put a very local spin on “green living.”
For us, energy efficiency goes hand in hand with issues we face every day like drought, wildfire risk, and rising energy costs. Buyers in our market are often just as interested in things like drought-tolerant landscaping, efficient irrigation, and rainwater collection as they are in solar panels or new appliances. And given our history with wildfires, features like ember-resistant materials and defensible space aren’t just “nice to have”, they’re essential for peace of mind.
Water is always top of mind here. Low-flow fixtures, greywater systems, and smart irrigation aren’t just selling points; they’re part of how we live in balance with our environment. And of course, energy-smart upgrades like better insulation, dual-pane windows, and
solar power continue to be attractive to buyers who want comfort while keeping costs down.
As REALTORS®, we’re in a unique position to highlight these features for our clients. It’s not just about a checklist of upgrades; it’s about helping buyers and sellers see the bigger picture of living sustainably in Santa Barbara.
For those who would like to learn more about how energy efficiency and sustainability in real estate can impact how a home is marketed and sold, NAR offers the Green designation, which is designed to give REALTORS® the tools to understand, market, and communicate the value of these green features. Be sure to ask your REALTOR® if they’ve got the Green designation. Those members who have it are uniquely qualified to help you.
Thanks again to REALTOR® Magazine for sparking the conversation. Here in Santa Barbara, we know that green living isn’t just about saving money or selling a home, it’s about keeping our community resilient and beautiful for generations to come.
