A Stunning Blufftop Home Kicks Off ArchitecTours 2025

On any given low-tide evening, you’ll find me strolling along the shore, lost in the expanse of ocean and sky, soaking in the sunset views. My toes are in the sand as often as I can get them there.

A recent invitation to visit a site featured in next month’s ArchitecTours immediately moved to the top of my list when I learned that one of the homes on the tour is an oceanfront property that’s been reimagined to frame the breathtaking sea views just beyond its beachfront backyard. Needless to say, my sand-loving toes couldn’t resist the opportunity.

In our temperate climate, it’s not uncommon to find homes designed to “bring the outdoors in.” But this one is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Every room has an uninterrupted ocean view endless sea and sky. From the front entrance, the living and dining rooms open to a sprawling patio. The further you move into the home, the more the beach comes into view below, and the more dazzling the experience.

The home itself is a masterpiece of modern elegance sleek lines, soaring ceilings, and impeccable finishes throughout. Its subdued palette allows nature to take center stage. With five bedrooms in total, the primary suite upstairs is a standout, featuring a fireplace, a spa-like bathroom, a private terrace, and a sitting room open to the level below. This design seamlessly integrates two-story glass windows that open dramatically at the touch of a button, flooding the space with the sultry sea breeze.

A gourmet kitchen and several bonus rooms, including

a media room and a wine grotto, add to the home’s allure. But truth be told, I barely noticed them; my gaze was constantly drawn back to the ocean.

My favorite spot on the property lies just beyond the back patio down a staircase and snuggled even closer to the coastline. A private guest cottage with its own deck sits perched high above the beach, offering a dreamy, selfcontained hideaway. The gentle, repetitive lull of the waves forms the soundtrack to this slice of serenity.

Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on my starry-eyed description of this home. You’ll have the chance to experience it firsthand on Saturday, October 4, during the 16th annual ArchitecTours, presented by the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara.

In addition to the Shoreline Drive residence, this year’s tour features four other private homes as well as an in-progress renovation of a historic downtown hotel, a behind-the-scenes look at one of the hottest new restaurants in town, plus a vibrant new office space that functions as both a workplace and design showcase. ArchitecTours offers a self-guided format, allowing you to explore at your own pace, with in-depth details about each project and the opportunity to mingle with architects and other design professionals.

And yes, you’ll have the chance to visit my dream home on the Mesa. In a unique twist for Architectours this year, this property is currently for sale. If you decide to make it yours, let me know I’ll happily become your house sitter. I promise I’ll even wash the sand off my toes before stepping inside.

ArchitecTours is Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with an after-party at Ospi restaurant from 4 to 6 p.m. included in each ticket. Tickets and more information are available at aiasb.com or (805) 966-4198.

THE BEATING HEART OF SANTA BARBARA

A rare blend of timeless architecture and modern sophistication, this estate captures the essence of California living with soaring 22-foot ceilings, walls of glass, and a seamless connection between indoors and out. Designed to frame panoramic views from every room, the home is alive with natural light and surrounded by expansive decks and patios that invite effortless entertaining.

At its heart lies a gourmet's dream kitchen, culinary showcase with appliances coveted by discerning culinary masters with a dramatic island, breakfast bar with a view, and direct flow to the outdoor dining terrace.

The Master Suite offers awakening views and a spa-like bath finished in cherry wood and granite with a generous walk-in closet. Complementing the home are a media room, private guest suite, and over 1,000 square feet of decks and patios, each designed for comfort and privacy.

Outdoors, the resort-inspired pool retreat becomes the centerpiece: a cabana with full kitchen, fireplace, and pizza oven creates the ultimate entertainment pavilion, while the diving board ensures fun-filled afternoons. All accessed by a private driveway or golf cart path. Beyond, 1.6 acres of landscaped grounds unfold into walking paths, a koi pond, fruit trees, and shaded seating areas that echo the serenity of a private park.

This architectural treasure — masterfully brought to life by Don G. Sharp — is both a statement of design and a sanctuary of natural beauty, offering the rare harmony of elegance, privacy, and timeless style.

Tails of Hope Event Raises Funds for Critical Medical Care for Shelter Animals

On September 21, the nonprofit S.B. County Animal Care Foundation hosted Tails of Hope at Elings Park to raise much-needed funds for S.B. County Animal Services, the government agency that, among other services, provides shelter for stray, neglected, and abused animals in the city and county of S.B. The bulk of foundation funding goes to medical care for shelter animals. The more donations received, the more shelter animals can receive the medical care necessary to get them to a state where they can be adopted.

Actors Bo Derek and John Corbett, shelter animals and their handlers, and a host of other volunteers greeted the more than 300 guests on the main soccer field. Many other nonprofits serving animals in the county had booths at the event, sharing with guests the good work of their organizations. A joyful spirit permeated the event, with guests united in their support for the highly regarded county agency, which has wildly successful foster and adoption programs.

As emcees for the program, Derek and Corbett entertained guests and endeared themselves to them with their passionate support for Animal Services’. Corbett noted that this was the first time he has ever emceed an event, which in itself was a testament to how much he values this agency.

Over the years, he and Derek have adopted three rescues from Animal Services Lompoc shelter, including the most recent, a German Shepherd whom they named Ringo because of his likeness to Ringo Starr. Corbett paid a huge tribute to Lee Heller, who tapped him for the role and organized the event.

Derek, a longtime advocate for the welfare of horses, shared her love for all animals and urged guests to support Animal Services, which she noted cares for not just dogs and cats, but other animals as well, in times of natural disasters and otherwise.

A live auction and ask raised critical funds for the foundation, which last year provided more than $80,000 for medical care and more than $25,000 for other support of Animal Services. The event sold out and overall netted

more than $200,000.

In an interview, Animal Services Director Sarah Aguilar explained that the county receives funding to carry out its mandated duties to pick up strays, ensure rabies vaccinations are registered, investigate animal cruelty and dangerous animals, and house and make strays comfortable. County funding, however, is insufficient to cover the diagnostics and treatment necessary to get all shelter animals to a state where they are adoptable. That is where the foundation comes in, funding care for the most serious and expensive cases.

Costs have been increasing faster than Animal Services budget, making foundation funding even more critical now. The more donations the foundation receives, Aguilar shared, the more abused, neglected, and stray animals coming into the shelter can be saved.

The numbers of animals coming into the shelter system are astounding. In 2024, it took in more than 2,800 dogs, of which 94 were euthanized. It took in more than 2,700 cats and euthanized 208. The vast majority of euthanasia cases are for medical, not behavioral, reasons. Of the 6,568 total animals that came into the shelters last year, Animal Services performed or arranged for nearly 4,500 medical exams and arranged for more than 1,300 surgeries. Animal intakes, and thus procedures, occur disproportionately in North County.

This year, Animal Services’ was able to hire a veterinarian for the first time, which has enabled it to rely less on outside providers. The foundation has funded an anesthesia machine, surgical tools, and other clinic supplies. The clinic still lacks an x-ray machine and hopes for funding for this and for other in-house equipment, which in the long run will make it operate more cost effectively than relying on outside providers.

The foundation funds other types of facility improve-

ments, such as a current $70,000 project replacing the play yards at the Goleta shelter. It previously funded a similar project in Santa Maria. It funds supplies, such as martingale collars, so each dog goes home with a good quality collar that it can’t slip out of. The foundation is funding a parttime coordinator to provide a volunteer-staffed enrichment program for shelter dogs. It will soon launch countywide DIY microchip scanning stations to quickly reunite lost pets with their families.

S.B. County Animal Services provides enforcement, licensing, and sheltering services to several cities in the county and to unincorporated parts of the county. It provides full shelter services for the City of Santa Barbara, but the city uses its own enforcement officers. The S.B. County Animal Care Foundation is its nonprofit partner.

The foundation runs very leanly it has no office and is all-volunteer, except for the recent hiring of a parttime marketing/development contractor to augment its fundraising efforts. It is seeking volunteers for fundraising. While big donations are of course welcome, Aguilar emphasized that for the shelter animals, every dollar donated is impactful.

TEACHER’S FUND SUPPLIES DRIVE RAISES OVER $140,000 FOR LOCAL CLASSROOMS

The 2025 Teacher’s Fund Supplies Drive has wrapped up with an A+ result: over $140,000 raised to provide local educators with essential classroom materials. In preparation for Back to School season, community members, local businesses, and Village Properties Realtors came together to support teachers across Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and the Santa Ynez Valley. With strong participation from Village Properties agents, plus generous backing from dozens of local businesses, the drive once again surpassed expectations.

“This fundraiser is about giving our teachers the tools they need to help students thrive,” said Brianna Johnson, Realtor at Village Properties and Committee Co-Chair. “It’s inspiring to see our community rally year after year to support educators - it really shows Santa Barbara’s heart for schools.”

Since its founding in 2002 by Village Properties Owner Renee Grubb, the Teacher’s Fund has donated more than $2.3 million to local classrooms. These funds have provided teachers with STEM supplies, art materials, organizational tools, electronics, and moreitems that school budgets often cannot cover.

Committee Members for the 2025 Supplies Drive included: Co-Chairs: Renee Grubb and Brianna Johnson

Committee Members: Angel Speier, Alyssa Jones, Sheela Hunt, Natalie Grubb, Dianne Johnson, Vince Caballero and Marcy Bazzani.

The need for classroom support continues to grow as budgets shrink, and the Teacher’s Fund remains dedicated to making sure teachers don’t have to dig into their own pockets for essentials.

While this year’s drive has come to a close, donations are welcome year-round. To support Santa Barbara educators, please visit teachersfund.org.

Creating Planted Corridors Is Helping Insects Thrive

Insect populations are in severe decline globally. The acuteness of this deterioration is hard to pinpoint because of insufficient research and monitoring of insect populations. Although some invertebrate populations have increased, the majority have fallen. The general view of scientists is that we are losing 1-2 percent of insect populations annually and that around 40 percent of species are threatened with extinction.

The drop in abundance, biomass, and diversity of insects has been almost totally driven by human activity. Habitat loss from urbanization and agricultural intensification, widespread pesticide use, light pollution, and climate change account for most of this decline. These in turn are creating serious threats to ecosystems, ecosystem services, food webs, and bird populations.

People around the world are mobilizing to counter this threat. The Pollinator

Pathway Project is helping create a network of independent organizations to build links between existing green spaces. They are establishing connected, pesticide-free zones where insects and pollinators can find food and shelter. Nectar-rich, native plants now fill alleys with color and fragrance when they were previously marked by neglect and litter. Cheerful murals are sometimes part of the mix. Local volunteers care for the spaces, water the plants, and enjoy the renewed abundance of bumblebees, butterflies, hoverflies, and ladybugs. Birds also love these corridors since they flourish where insects are abundant. Insects are a big part of their diet.

Similar to the habitat isolation many mammals are experiencing that are caused by crisscrossing highways, insects are being isolated in smaller and smaller wildflower-rich grasslands. Habitat fragmentation is a big issue. To counter this,

not only are alleys getting converted into insect-friendly corridors, but so are farm hedgerows, meridian road dividers, parks, home gardens, and road verges. Some of these transformations take only a week of volunteer work, while others take longer and involve public-private collaboration. More than 300 towns in 24 U.S. states have joined the movement.

Founded in 2011, the U.K. conservation charity Buglife has created a three-kilometer-wide “insect superhighway map” connecting wildflower-rich habitats the length and breadth of Britain. In addition, it has incentivized local groups to fill in the highway gaps. To date, more than 3,800 groups and projects have been added to

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SALES

connect and enhance biodiversity. Linking habitat can include bare ground for ground-nesting bees and leaf litter for overwintering insect nests. Some may perceive less-manicured landscapes as messy or unkempt, but they provide great benefits.

Once again, we are realizing that things that are good for nature are also good for people.
