LA HARBOR HOLIDAY AFLOAT PARADE RETURNS FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF DECKED-OUT FUN by Nadia Nizetich

The LA Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade is back at the Port of Los Angeles and will set sail on December 2 for another year of holiday cheer. Sponsored by local yacht clubs and the Los Angeles Harbor Department, the parade will feature approximately 30 boats decked out for the season cruising down the main channel in the harbor. “The parade marks the beginning of the holiday season for local residents,” says organizer Robert McKoy, “and it really makes a difference when you come out and see the excitement on everyone’s faces.” Going on its 60th year, the parade started off as an informal sail put on by local boat owners until it was officially organized by the city of Los Angeles in 1963. That year, it drew a whopping 40,000 spectators and featured 57 boats, awarding trophies to vessels judged to be the most spectacularly decorated. Today, organizers of the parade still host a friendly competition to honor the winning boat — however, they now feature the “Children’s Choice Awards” with kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor as core judges of the event. In addition to coordinating with the club, the orga-

nizers of the parade also donate all of the registration proceeds to charitable causes. Though the parade has otherwise kept true to form throughout the years, the organizers pick a new theme each year, with this year’s being “Light Up the Holidays,” and they typically screen a different holiday movie for kids of all ages on the sail of a tall ship. This year, they’ve also moved their traditional brunch from the day immediately after the parade to the Wednesday after — but they’ve still kept the brunch open to the general public. Beyond that, they’re just hoping for a solid turnout at this year’s parade. “The joy of Christmas is the magic that we share and the energy that we get from each other,” says Robert, reflecting on the importance of the event. “This is a tradition that has been in San Pedro for many years — and I think it’s one we should all try to support.” The LA Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade will take place on Saturday, December 2, at 5 p.m. at the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (550 S. Harbor Blvd.). For tickets and more information, visit lamitopsail.org/events. spt

FRIENDSHIP PARK INVITES ALL TO EXPERIENCE NATURE The beloved park offers more than just spectacular views.

Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center. (photo: L.A. County)

by Jennifer Marquez

There is more going on at Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center than meets the eye. With over 123 acres, this Los Angeles County park has spectacular views, hiking, a nature center, picnic tables, a youth employment program, volunteer activities, an owl, a 100-yearold desert tortoise, and programs and classes for all ages. The park overlooks San Pedro and has an appreciation and respect for nature and Native Americans. A monthly Aztec Danza class for beginners is held on the last Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. A Native American volunteer wears traditional Aztec garments and teaches dance in a circle. Classes provide spiritual, physical, and mental selfcare through song, music, and dance. Healing Through Art in Nature offers a connection to native culture, art, and

nature. The class is held every other Saturday from 1–3 p.m. Both classes are provided at no cost. Children must be accompanied by a parent, and there are no classes in December. “The park is a home away from home for the community. We serve everyone from infants to elders and welcome people of all abilities to visit,” says Maria Chavez, park supervisor. “We have hiking paths that accommodate wheelchairs. Our bus takes seniors and others up the hill so they can have the same access as everyone else. Our playground is being redesigned to be ADA compliant so it can be used by all children.” According to Vern Ryan, a regular walker at the park, Friendship Park lives up to its name as a friendly place to be. He describes his time there, walking up the hill six times, as peaceful, like a fishing hole that is so good, you do not want to spoil it by telling too many people. However, now he encourages folks to visit and experience it as a get-away place. He says it will lift spirits, and you will always feel better after a walk there.

“You can see Catalina from one angle, and if you look the other way, there is Downtown Los Angeles,” says Ryan. “There are so many walks of life here: older people, walkers, bikes, skateboards, dog walkers, and I even saw a unicycle going up the hill one day. Everything is in harmony, sights, sound, and love. You will feel the positive energy if you walk here.” The park staff visits senior facilities and shares about nature and their animal ambassadors. Animals injured in the park are housed on-site, including a sketch owl named Hercules, two desert tortoises — one over 100 years old — plus snakes, scorpions, lizards, and a falcon. The park can be rented for children’s birthday parties and includes an ageappropriate nature activity and a ride on the bus for a guided hike. It is not uncommon to sing “The Wheels on the Bus (Go Round and Round)” while on the bus. Other park classes and activities for families and children include a parent-and-me multilingual nature class with animal meet and greets, a hike,

and an introduction to Spanish and sign language. The course focuses on making new friends, bonding, and appreciating nature. There is also a drop-off daycare in the mornings. Other activities include a women’s group that provides comradery, physical activity, and a connection with nature. Upcoming events include field trips to other county parks, a Mother’s Day fiesta with local vendors, a senior hiking group, and a holiday pet “paw-ty” held on December 9 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. The Youth Employment program is for ages 14-24 and teaches young adults work skills while employed and paid as a county employee. With so many opportunities, stopping in the nature center to get more details is best, as their website is not always current. Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center is located at 1805 W. 9th Street. DUDES ALIVE FOREVER! The author remembers his longtime friend, Ron Galosic. by Anthony Pirozzi, Jr.

The holidays are that special time of year when we make it a point to celebrate with loved ones. It’s a time to thank God for all he has provided, to reflect on the good in our lives, and to remember those who are no longer with us. As we enter into the holidays, I find myself reflecting on my 40-plus-year relationship with my late friend Ron Galosic, who passed away on October 9. His passing has left a void in many of us, but the memories of our time with him will never fade. We met in the early ‘80s during our Marie Callender’s days and immediately hit it off. Back then, the word of that time was “dude,” and it was how guys addressed each other. “Dude, what’s up?” or “Dude, how’s it goin’?” That’s how we referred to each other from then on. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I called him Ron. We even referred to his older brother Joe as “big dude,” younger brother Randy as “little dude,” and sister Annette as “dudette.” Even when we became fathers, our kids were “little dudes,” and they got a kick out of it. Ron loved sports, and in particular, baseball. He loved to play it, watch it, and coach it. So, when I signed my kids up to play at the Eastview Little League at the former DiCarlo Bakery site, I wasn’t surprised to see Ron involved. In fact, many of our high school friends were Eastview parents, which made Saturdays feel like a high school reunion. A few years after joining the league, I learned the site was sold to make way for Target. The league was now in desperate need of a place to relocate, so the “Save Eastview” campaign was born. As incoming 2008 Eastview president, Ron faced the uncertainty of the league’s future. The political environment to relocate the fields was intense, but eventually, the decision was made to relocate to Knoll Hill. I offered Ron my project management experience to create a detailed plan and schedule to build the fields. At his urging, the board 18 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I DECEMBER 2023 I sanpedrotoday.com

created a position for me as the new fields project manager. Not long after that, Ron said, “Dude, if we miss the start of the season, we will lose the league.” This was a rallying call like no other. Ron was relentless, ruffled some feathers along the way, knew when to drop the hammer to get people moving, and knew when to apologize – all signs of a great leader. He was all about the kids and ensuring they had a place to play the sport he loved, period. During the 2007 holiday season, Ron, Mario Amalfitano, and I spent countless hours on the fields’ design and schedule. By Christmas Eve, the build was in full swing, and it was time to install the fence posts. We tried to taper in the first base fence line to make watching a game from right field easier. If you ever wondered why the right field fence line appears crooked, now you know. After that, we made the rest of the fence lines straight. On Christmas Eve 2008, Ron called me from Knoll Hill. “Dude,” he said, “where were you on Christmas Eve in 2007?” I replied, “I was with you building the fields at Knoll Hill.” We made that call to each other for years. Today, the baseball fields at Knoll Hill are the result of Ron’s leadership, the overall collective effort of league volunteers, Councilwoman Janice Hahn, the Port of Los Angeles, and many others who helped along this rough journey. Ron leaves us a legacy: his family. A family that many of us respect because of the love Ron and his wife Linda had for each other raising their children, Michael, Ronnie, and Annette. May God bless them and Ron’s beautiful mom, Georgia, through this holiday season. This Christmas Eve, I will make it a point to go to Knoll Hill and remember Ron, our friendship, his passion for baseball, and his passion for the kids of San Pedro. I will look up to heaven and say, “Dude, I miss you.” spt Photo: Galosic (left) with Pirozzi at Knoll Hill in 2007. GIVE THANKS

The author highlights the many people and organizations that continue to improve San Pedro. by Lee Williams West Harbor under construction in October 2023. (photo: John Mattera Photography)

My best friend Otto Schutt grew up in San Pedro, and while he was alive, he was famous for looking for ways to give thanks. Accomplishments, small and large, hopes delivered and disasters avoided, minor miracles, and huge opportunities for celebration were often followed with a shout of “Give thanks!” Before I dive deep into my planning for 2024, I want to “give thanks” for the things I am grateful for in 2023. Give thanks to the local nonprofits I participate in on the board of directors. Harbor Connects is the successful transition from the Harbor Neighborhood Relief Fund. It helps connect people in need with the local service providers that do the work. Harbor Connects also fills in the gaps with resources to help our local nonprofits and first responders with unusual requests, such as fixing a tire so a recently housed single mother can drive to work or paying for a night at a hotel when the LAPD is helping a victim of domestic violence. I’m grateful for the newly founded San Pedro Education Foundation, where we are helping fund projects and

opportunities for San Pedro schools to do things to improve the quality of education outside the LAUSD annual budget. I’m grateful for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, where they fill the non-school hours for its young members with a real focus on their future, be it college or career opportunities. There is no other organization in the South Bay with a more significant impact or a higher return on investment than the Boys & Girls Club, serving over 8,500 kids annually. Give thanks to Elise Swanson of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, who is working with the L.A. City Council Office to improve small business opportunities and the hard work necessary to create an L.A. City Jobs and Economic Development Incentive (JEDI) Zone and an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD) that could transform Pacific Avenue and so many of our boarded-up businesses. Because of Elise’s tireless work, this is a chamber that cares about fighting poverty, ending homelessness, and improving the lives of all San Pedrans. Give thanks to Linda Grimes, Cindy and Patrick Bradley, Ken and Kathy Creighton, Lucrecia Jacobson, Liz Schindler-Johnson, Windy Barnes Farrell, Amy Eriksen, and the countless others who make San Pedro an

excellent place for all forms of the arts. San Pedro is one of California’s statedesignated Cultural Districts, highlighting our little town by the sea’s thriving cultural diversity and unique artistic identities. Give thanks to men like Major General Peter Gravett, Dr. Felton Williams, Councilman Robert Farrell, Senior Lead Officer Maligi “Junior” Nua, Sergio Carrillo, and Kenny Green for the doors they have opened for so many young kids of color in San Pedro who may never have had opportunities without them. Give thanks to women like Amber Sheikh, Diane Middleton, Connie McOsker, Lisa Williams, Caroline Brady, Shari Weaver, and Janice Hahn, who have had an extraordinary impact on our community and me personally. They get things done when no one else can, sometimes while wearing heels and often without taking credit. Give thanks for the progress we can see at West Harbor. It is quickly taking shape and remains active during the construction. The cynics have been silenced, and the excitement is growing. The same goes for AltaSea, where new industries around the Blue Economy are being created, and solutions for climate change, food insecurity, and clean energy generation are being researched and developed.

Give thanks to my team at REAL, Laura, Lisa, Anne, Debbie, and Amanda, for your commitment to making a difference in our community and to “work hard, be kind.” Give thanks to all the people I couldn’t thank within this short column for forgiving me for the omission and for all the work you do for San Pedro. Give thanks to San Pedro and all those who make it a great place to live, work, and play. Our best days are well on their way. Lastly, I give thanks to the woman who has put up with the challenges of my community involvement. My wife sacrifices daily at her job as a longshorewoman so I can serve on the Harbor Commission. It has cost her wages, hours, contributions to her pension, a lengthy commute, and time with many of the friends she has made in her 16 years on the waterfront. The losses we have suffered in recent years have brought us closer, and I can’t imagine a better life partner. I love you, Sara. spt Lee Williams leads The Lee Williams Real Estate Group at REAL Broker and is a Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner. He can be reached at lee@lamove.com.

WITH THE MARKETPLACE HOSTING THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SAN PEDRO VENDORS IN ITS HISTORY, THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO MEET YOUR MAKERS. by Nadia Nizetich

If you haven’t been to CRAFTED — or haven’t been in a while — you’re missing out on something special. “We have a great mix of vendors right now, and there’s something for everyone,” says Rachel Sindelar, director of the community-driven marketplace. She’s not exaggerating — from glassblowing classes to saddle makers, CRAFTED seems to have entered its renaissance. In addition to an array of activities, artists, and funky finds, the makers market has achieved a significant milestone: It’s now home to the highest number of San Pedro-based vendors in its history, with nearly 20 local artisans. “I don’t know if the pandemic influenced it or not,” says Rachel, referring

to the influx, “although I know there’s not anywhere nearby that is exactly like CRAFTED.” The vendors are a bit more certain about their motivations for coming to the market. “I came because I wanted to be a part of my community, and I always loved this place,” says Melissa Hay, who sells homemade candles and fragrances from her booth, Homemade by the Hays. She’s one of the San Pedro vendors who not only started her business during the pandemic but discovered her love for the trade as well. “My daughters bought me a bunch of candles as a joke for Christmas, and I burned through all of them pretty quickly,” she explains. She felt compelled to re-use the vessels to reduce

waste, figuring there was no better way to do that than to restore them to their original form, and the rest is history. She joined CRAFTED in March of this year, where she now hosts her own candle- and fragrance-making classes. For other local vendors, the pandemic didn’t necessarily ignite their passion, but rather gave them the opportunity to refine their craft. Jackie Popov of Twilight Delights Bakery is one such example. Specializing in custom cookies and cakes, her artful creations hardly betray the fact that she started making pastries a mere four years ago. “I baked my first cookie ever in November 2019,” she explains. “My dad was sick, and I was his caregiver, so I was just doing it to help my mind dursanpedrotoday.com

ing that time.” She started posting her cookies to Facebook in 2020 and quickly built a customer base, capitalizing on the fact that she could operate out of her home while other bakeries were shuttered. It was in 2021 that she realized she belonged at CRAFTED. “What attracted me here is all of the artists. As an artist and cookie maker, the creative minds are simply inspiring.” So, it turns out that Rachel’s hunch was correct — San Pedrans are indeed coming to CRAFTED for a myriad of reasons, not all related to the pandemic. When asked why she believes it’s important to support them, Rachel’s much more certain in her answer. “When you spend money at a local business, as

In addition to hosting the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce mixer on December 15, which is open to the general public with a canned good or toy donation, they’ll be hosting a booth at this year’s Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade to get the word out. Beyond that, they plan to continue relying on word of mouth and the strength of the local community. “A lot of people support vendors here because it makes you feel good to hire a local person,” says Rachel. “And I know there’s this whole ‘Pedro Pride’ thing — what better place to express it than with all your neighbors at CRAFTED.” spt CRAFTED at the Port of Los Angeles is located at 112 E. 22nd St. For more info, visit craftedportla.com.

LESSONS OF 'A CHRISTMAS CAROL'

A staged reading of Sir Patrick Stewart’s adaptation of the Dickens classic will be presented at the Warner Grand Theatre on Dec. 22. by Linda Grimes “Marley was dead, to begin with. There was no doubt whatever about that.” These words ushered in the greatest adventure of my life — meeting my soulmate, life partner, and future husband, Fred C. Allen. Little did I know that 29 years ago, seeing Patrick Stewart say these words in the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, from his adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel A Christmas Carol, would fundamentally change my entire life and lead me to

San Pedro. At the time, Fred had been A Christmas Carol’s lighting designer for six years, taking this very successful one-man play to Broadway and winning an Olivier Award in April 1994. He captured my heart in one light cue, where the whole stage became the size of Patrick’s face in an other-worldly yellow/green hue to depict Marley’s head on Scrooge’s door knocker and suddenly disappeared. We wanted to present this work, as it has informed our relationship for the past 29 years, and its messages are very relevant to today’s world situation. We are also concerned about the Warner Grand Theatre’s impending closure,

scheduled for January 2024, and the plight of theaters in general, which are facing mounting challenges. Although Fred is not Jewish, and I am, our families had the same core values. Throughout our relationship, we try to embody the principles of Tikkun, which means contributing toward the welfare of others. This has been a central and fulfilling part of our identity in this community. We feel we have a mandate to improve the world in which we live, starting with our local environment. Tikkun olam is a Hebrew phrase that translates to “repairing the world.” It embodies the idea that humans have a responsibility to actively contribute to making the world a better place. This ladder of charitable behavior encompasses acts of social justice, environmental stewardship, and compassion. By engaging in actions that promote healing, justice, and empathy, we can all participate in the ongoing process of repairing and improving the world. After much discussion and Sir Patrick’s permission to use his script, we organized a staged reading of his adaptation of A Christmas Carol, featuring local luminaries, such as Councilman Tim McOsker and actors from Little Fish Theatre/Shakespeare by the Sea, Encore Theatre Group South Bay, House of Bards Theatre Company, and Cornerstone Theater Company, represented by Bruce A. Lemon. This presentation is intended to be an Arts District Culture TALKS! fundraiser to benefit the four theater organizations performing in San Pedro. We are grateful to Renee O’Connor-Sura (House of Bards Theatre Company) and Jacob Nye (Encore Theatre Group), who readily agreed to direct this production. The Arts District’s Culture TALKS! series originally started in 2018 on Mexico’s Independence Day as an

expression of our commitment to community arts education. This program seeks common ground by engaging participants in conversations about culture and how the arts inspire empathy, understanding, and identity. The program embodies the Arts District’s mission statement — to support, advocate, and promote San Pedro arts and artists in all genres. We celebrate diversity and inspire appreciation of cultural and artistic expression. This series is conceived to further establish the Arts District as a thought leader, inform the public of cultural equity issues, and demonstrate the power of art to promulgate change. As we celebrate our diversity, we seek to enrich our collective sense of place to unite us as a community. Speakers are selected based on their art and activism and will discuss how Los Angeles residents are rising to challenges, affecting not only artists but the existence of healthy, sustainable, diverse communities. The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District will present this staged reading of Sir Patrick Stewart’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on Friday, December 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Warner Grand Theatre (478 W. 6th St.). Before the performance, Santa Claus is hosting a photo booth for holiday pictures. After the reading, VIP ticket holders will be treated to a dessert reception in the Warner Grand’s upstairs lobby. Tickets are available on our website — SanPedroWaterfrontArtsDistrict.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the four participating local theaters. spt Linda Grimes is the executive director of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District and can be reached at 55lindagrimes@gmail.com.

IMPACT

’TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING

When you spend locally, you support your neighbors. by Amber Sheikh The author's daughter goes shopping at a local thrift store. (photo: Amber Sheikh)

The frenzy of giftgiving is very real. At least I know it is for me, and I suspect it is for many of you. So, I want to take a beat and chat about how we can approach giving more meaningfully and intentionally. Let’s start with what we buy and from where. With two kids, a gaggle of cousins, nieces and nephews, friends, and colleagues, I know too well how much “stuff” we accumulate. Consider then regifting. Something you no longer use or need may have use for someone else. I know, regifting is often thought of as a faux pas, something we do for white elephant parties, not for real gifts. It’s “the thought that counts,” right? The genuine value of a gift is in what we give, not how much we spend on it. So, in that spirit, I urge you to reconsider your perspective on regifting. And if not regifting, there’s always thrifting, and we live in the perfect town for that! I’m an avid thrifter. My eight-year-old daughter is one, too. I have shared my finds with others and converted a few folks — those who

never would have thought about buying something used. (I even have a second Instagram account for my finds.) The idea that we get to enjoy something once loved by someone else is lovely. Where you spend is powerful. While Amazon sells us everything under the sun and brings it to our doorstep, the impact of those dollars isn’t as direct as it could be. From gift cards to other items on your lists, everything can be bought locally. And when you spend locally, you support your neighbors, some of whom have lived and served this community for generations. That spending has value. It is meaningful. It carries intention. My family and friends will be getting used books from Sunken City Books and gift cards from Distrito Coffee and Sirens Java & Tea, as well as to the amazing restaurants in town. I love giving candles from Homemade by the Hays. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has the best gift shop, and CRAFTED has something for everyone. For the kiddos, I’ll pop into any number of thrift stores in town to buy toys, clothes, and look for other interesting finds. FITNESS

ARE YOU READY FOR ANYTHING? Use these three steps to get in shape for the New Year. by Eddie McKenna How does your current fitness level affect your ability to participate in everyday life activities? How does it affect your options of expressing your fitness in part by participating in, say, a local 5K race, a triathlon, or even going on a hike with friends? I hear people talk about these things most when they come to see me to get back in shape. Simple things like keeping up with your kids in the park, walking up a flight of stairs, or having enough energy to get through the day

without feeling exhausted. Last month, three members of my gym and I signed up for a triathlon. Unbeknownst to them, when I asked, the event was two weeks out from my invitation. They all said, “Sure! When is it?” I told them, “It’s two weeks from today.” They laughed and said, “Sure, why not? If you think we can do it, we are game.” What I thought was great about their ease of agreeing to the feat was that they were so confident in their current state of fitness that they believed they could do it. None of them are exclusive endurance athletes, nor am I, but we all work out and train roughly five hours a week regularly. In the two weeks we

36 I SAN PEDRO TODAY I DECEMBER 2023 I sanpedrotoday.com

(photo: Li Sun / Pexels)

had to prepare for the race, we all got into the pool at least four times and went for two to three 10-mile bike rides. We all felt ready — kind of. Come race day, we were laughing about the fact that we had signed up for an Olympic triathlon. One of my members told another race participant how he hadn’t really trained for the event and how nervous he was. It gave me pause, and I thought, “No, you’ve been consistently training without stopping for the last ten years. You are in good enough shape to finish this.” When you get to a certain fitness level, the possibilities of things you can participate in are limitless. I am not suggesting you sign up to do a triathlon on a whim. But are you thinking about it now? I am a big fan of suffering, so much so that one of the first articles I wrote for this magazine was about it. Someone asked me before my last race, “Are you going to try and win it?” I laughed and replied, “No.” My reasoning for participating in these long, arduous events is not for the vanity of winning but just the act of completion. And the suffering I have to endure to complete is pure bliss for me. Does your heart drop a little when your kid asks you to take him to the park to throw the ball around and play? If you are reading this going, “Gosh dang it, he’s talking about me!” Don’t you worry, I got you. The following is a simple nine-week progression for you to get out of “dad bod” mode and into “weekend warrior” mode. Step one is pretty simple: Make a schedule blocking out three hours a week for you to exercise. You can’t

commit a whole hour? No problem — let’s do three 30-minute sessions. Everyone can squeeze in 30 minutes. Weeks one to three are going to be an easy cardio program: 10 minutes of stretching, then 20 minutes of running. Simple as that. It’s an easy start to get your sea legs about you and work on building up a good aerobic base. Step two: This one will cost you a bit of money, but not too much. Purchase a pair of adjustable dumbbells. Do this during week two of the running and stretching phase of the program so you are ready for the week four weightlifting series. During weeks four to six, you will focus on compound movements, such as dumbbell bench press, front squat, and Romanian deadlifts. Remember — three sessions a week, and they can still be 30 minutes: one day of upper body, one day of lower body, and one day of full body. Google videos on the compound movements and perform 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps. This should get you up to a good base level of strength. Step three: This is the most important one, and I say the one that will help keep you committed and working towards being ready for anything. Recruit one of your friends in the situation you just got yourself out of and show him “The Way.” Weeks seven to nine will be paramount for you, showing yourself how capable of a mover you have become over the last six weeks and allowing you to inspire a friend to do the same. spt Eddie McKenna is co-owner of Heyday Elite Fitness.
