Twenty years is a long time. It’s evident in the way Susan Obert recounts memories throughout her career, much of which was spent at a local museum where she now serves as CEO. Her stories mirror the victories, challenges, and fond memories that a relationship of any dynamic would experience over such an extended period. “The list of experiences at the Haggin feels endless for me,” she says. THE LEGACY OF FABULOUS FADJUR

While retirement marks the end of one chapter, it can also create exciting new beginnings, reveal new passions, and in some cases, inspire people to embark on an entirely new career. San Joaquin Magazine spoke to four incredible seniors in our community who are expanding their horizons in their golden years, from doing vital work with nonprofits to starting their own businesses. Through their dedication to pursue their passions and tirelessly serve the community, these seniors continue to shine in their “second acts.” BY JENNIFER MORROW

A home museum littered in ribbons, stables filled with award-winning stallions and mares, a prestigious lineage dating back nearly a century— these attributes are what set Jack Tone Ranch apart from other horse breeders in the country. A long line of aristocratic horses carrying the highest national distinctions (including U.S. National and International Champion and Top 10 Mares and Stallions) takes up residence on a family ranch on the outskirts of Stockton. It didn’t take long for High Water Brewing Taproom & Restaurant to become a local’s favorite spot for sipping brews after work or into the weekend. However, the extravagant and flavorful menu seems to be the eatery’s best-kept secret. If you weren’t aware that your favorite brewery also serves lunch and dinner—well, we just let the cat out of the bag. And if you were expecting a line-up of chicken strips and chips and dip, you’ll be surprised to see what’s actually lurking on this menu. BY NORA HESTON TARTE

NEXT YEAR SUSAN OBERT WILL CELEBRATE ANOTHER LANDMARK ANNIVERSARY WITH THE HAGGIN MUSEUM—BUT THIS TIME—AS CEO.  BY

Susan continues. That’s why her favorite projects and exhibitions over the years are those that allow the staff to interact with the artists, historians, or talent. From witnessing Dolores Huerta’s charisma as she spoke to visitors about the importance of getting involved in their personal interests, to escorting one of the museum’s Albert Bierstadt paintings to the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, experiences rich in personal connection stand out most in her mind. It makes sense, having dedicated her entire career to nonprofit organizations. “I knew that working at the museum would allow me to focus on supporting educational experiences that help build quality of life for the people within our community and beyond.” It’s also brought quite a few laughs, too. A very popular exhibition, Driven to Dream: Stockton & Car Culture, was part of the museum’s San Joaquin Roots Series made possible by the Tuleburg Endowment, a permanently restricted fund established to underwrite exhibitions that highlight the unique history of our region. “So, there we were with a great idea from board member Dick McClure… We had partnerships with local car owners and all the funding in place,” she says. Then came the true challenge: transporting nine cars to the main floor of the museum, which happens to be the second floor. “With a forklift and a can-do attitude, the exhibition became a reality,” says Susan with a smile. This type of creative problem solving and grit are just a few characteristics that make Susan an ideal leader. Some may see taking the helm at this time as a major risk. But Susan is

NOVEMBER 18, 2021 – JANUARY 9, 2022 FRIDA KAHLO’S GARDEN Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is considered one of the most significant artists of the 20th century and this exhibit transports visitors to her garden to experience her world as she did. The museum has already benefited greatly from her proven track record of success in fund development. Her role in securing two threeyear James Irvine Foundation grants served as the catalyst for reimaging the core art galleries in 2017: a huge project that allowed the museum to expand its vision in the process. Haggin Museum turned 90 in June, marking nearly a century spent nestled in Victory Park. The nonprofit art and history museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums is a Stockton staple that has stood the test of time through the city’s many ebbs and flows. This last year, however, has been unlike any other. The museum closed its doors for 13 months due to COVID-19 guidelines and is now open with modified business hours. That, however, is not putting a wrench in Susan’s plans to continue propelling the Haggin. “I like to remind people that the Haggin Museum and Port

of Stockton both opened during the Great Depression,” she notes. “Over the last year we have increased our digital content resources. So, even during this difficult time we have grown. And this enhancement is here to stay.” The Haggin is hosting an array of temporary exhibitions that offer something for everyone. Vietnam: The Real War Photographs from the Associated Press, a collection of powerfully moving images captured by AP photojournalists, will run through the end of October. The museum also has plans throughout the year to celebrate its 90th-anniversary with exciting tributes, dedications, and opportunities for community participation. “We are hopeful that we will once again be able to host our many traditional programs, events, and services,” says Susan. We have all the necessary pieces to accomplish this, and I am certain it will happen.”

OUR COLORFUL PAST: DICK BELCHER INTERPRETS SELECTIONS FROM THE BANK OF STOCKTON’S HISTORICAL ARCHIVES Bank of Stockton’s extraordinary photo collection consists of more than 20,000 rare, historical images of Stockton, San Joaquin County, and the Mother Lode dating from 1859 to 1987. The collection includes original photos from 19th and early 20th century Stockton-based photographers. Many of the original black and white photographs have been custom “colorized” by Dick Belcher for the Bank of Stockton.

DEEP WATER with COMMUNITY ROOTS NEW PORT OF STOCKTON DIRECTOR KIRK DEJESUS’ GLOBAL PLANS HAVE A LOCAL IMPACT  BY LINDSEY RODRIAN / D DAN HOOD The Port of Stockton is more than a physical feature, it’s a philanthropic pillar of our community. But, dedication to community connection spans beyond the support of many local non-profits, with an aim to create more jobs for our tight-knit community, serve as a steward for the environment, and act as a catalyst for positive change. As Stockton native Kirk DeJesus steps into his new role as director, his focus is set on bolstering infrastructure in order to encourage additional international trade while keeping core characteristics predecessor Richard Aschieris honored for more than 20 years. “As a member of the Stockton community for the past 22 years, I know that it is imperative to support local programs and we will continue to do so,” says Kirk. “As we

28

SEPTEMBER 2021 | SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

grow, we will encourage and incentivize our tenants to support local jobs which will generate additional local tax revenue.” Kirk’s big picture plans are locally focused, as the Port finalizes a strategic plan that outlines a forward path in regard to operational efficiency and financial responsibility. With planned growth and a desire to become a net export facility, Kirk notes the importance of improving infrastructure in order to meet customer’s needs while maintaining fiscal and environmental responsibility. There are a number of projects in process and on the horizon that will represent a significant investment in the community while helping to grow the local economy. Along with these growth and expansion initiatives, the Port of

Stockton remains dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint through the purchase of zero-emission equipment and the implementation of programs designed to identify and reduce air pollution and emissions. Though Kirk now oversees the transport of nearly five million tons of cargo every year for over 50 different countries, he says that the best part, and his most favorite aspect, of the Port is the people. “I feel truly honored to have the opportunity to be a member of such a dedicated and conscientious team.”

COMING up COSPLAY STOCKTONCON IS BACK SEPT. 11-12  BY NORA HESTON TARTE Local residents in elaborate costumes, fans ogling over comic book news, science fiction fanatics gathering to discuss their favorite shows, movies, and games—that’s what StocktonCon is all about, and after a COVID-19-induced hiatus, it’s back for a summer event. The city-wide celebration is focused on comics, card games, video games, cards, anime, manga, science fiction, toys, television, and movies, while also raising awareness of local San Joaquin County artists. And to add to the fanfare, the event brings in celebrity guests and artists as well as panels, exhibitors, vendors, and more. One of the best parts of StocktonCon, however, is dressing up— and we’re not talking store-bought Halloween costumers here. From professional make-up to cosplay that look as good as the movies, Stockton residents and others in attendance at the annual

30

SEPTEMBER 2021 | SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

event dress to impress. Some are looking to win the cosplay costume contest, while others are upholding a reputation. “I only pick character I identify with or absolutely adore, but whomever I choose I make sure I have fun,” says Jacqueline Goehner who has a reputation for dressing up as Princess Zelda as well as Witchblade, Red Sonja, and Dejah Thoris. Tim Hurles is known around town as NorCal Cap, for his Captain American costume complete with a matching sidekick (his son). Perhaps most impressive is the work that goes into making the outfits. “Some of it is scratch building and some is taking existing costumes and modifying,” Tim says. “I do all of my own painting and detailing.” Jacqueline does the same. “I make all of my costumes with the exception of two…and props.” In addition to outfitting his son with a

complementary Captain America costume, Tim's wife and daughter have gotten in on the fun in their own Avengers attire. “Part of the reason I enjoy the hobby of costume creation and portrayal is because I can include my entire ATTEND THE family,” EVENT: “I'm more of a Sept 11-12 lone wolf,” Stockton Arena, Jacqueline 248 W. Fremont St., says. “But I Stockton do go with a friend or two StocktonCon.com occasionally.” Cost: $17-20 This year attendees can expect more than 200 exhibitors and artists. Guests can also participate in gaming tournaments. As information is confirmed, it will be posted on VisitStockton.org/Events/ Stockton-Con and on the StocktonCon Facebook page.

TAKE A HIKE 5 BAY AREA TRAILS YOU CAN DRIVE TO  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Mount Diablo

Looking to take a hike before summer ends? As fall brings cooler weather, it’s the best time of year to get outside. We’ve rounded up some of the most notable hikes in the Bay Area (a quick drive away) to keep you busy and active throughout the month of September—four of which offer peaks with phenomenal views. Take the challenge and complete them all or pick a favorite for your next adventure. MISSION PEAK SUMMIT. A long hike

is worth it when the payoff is big. In addition to scenic views of the Bay Area with several mountains in eyesight at once— Mt. Tamalpais, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Diablo, and the Sierra Nevadas. The towering pole at the summit often shows hikers who have finished the trek climbing all over it; a rite of passage for those who have completed the 3-mile trek to the top. The trail is accessible from Ohlone College and Stanford.

32

SYCAMORE GROVE PARK.

BRUSHY PEAK. Also in

This Livermore staple offers up an easier, family-friendly trek. The 847-acre park features a paved, flat trail that meanders three miles (each way) through the towering trees (offering much-needed shade) sneaking glimpses of active wildlife. It costs $5 to park at either entrance, which is open 7 a.m.sunset daily.

Livermore, this hike is at a nearly 2,000-acre nature preserve with a pretty challenging trail. The area is rich in Native American culture, which is worth reading up on before a visit. The loop trail is 4.5 miles in total and features a lake. With several steep sections that take you almost to the top of Brushy Peak, it offers a moderate climb and 754 feet in elevation gain.

SEPTEMBER 2021 | SANJOAQUINMAGAZINE.COM

MOUNT DIABLO. Serious hikers only need apply. The summit trail to the top stretches 6.8 miles and ends at 3,848 feet in the sky. From the top, those who make it will enjoy sweeping views of Farallon Islands, the Sierra Nevadas, and Yosemite’s Half Dome. It is possible to drive to the top, but if you can stomach the climb, hiking is a better way to take in the views.

MONUMENT PEAK. Summiting a mountain is a bucket list item for many, and you don’t have to travel far to find one. Located in Milpitas, this trail is not for beginners. At 9.8 miles, the loop trail ascends 2,290 feet on challenging terrain. Along the trail you will see a lake and sometimes hang gliders. After you’ve summited Monument Peak, return using the Agua Caliente and Calera Creek trails to complete the loop.

MEET YOUR BABY

3D, 4D AND HD LIVE IMAGING MAKES SEEING BABY BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE  DEIRDRE CARLSON From the moment that extra line appears on the pregnancy test, you will want to see your little one to make it all real. An ultrasound allows you to do this fairly early on, and with advanced technology of 3D and 4D ultrasounds, you can now see baby upclose-and-personal like never before. Like regular ultrasounds, 3D and 4D ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image of baby in the womb. What's different is that 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional image of your baby, while 4D ultrasounds create a live video effect, like a movie, so you can watch your baby smile or yawn in real-time. Nothing can prepare you for the overwhelming joy you will feel actually witnessing this incredible moment. And it is available locally in Stockton, Manteca, and Modesto through Valley MRI & Radiology. With

SECOND

ACTS

FOUR LOCALS REFLECT ON THEIR LIFE IN THE GOLDEN YEARS  BY JENNIFER MORROW / D DAN HOOD

Through their dedication to pursue their passions and tirelessly serve the community, these seniors continue to shine in their “second acts.” Dennis Smallie knew he wanted to be a police officer since he was a kid, when he would watch Officers Malloy and Reed ride in their patrol car and protect the streets of LA in the 60s-70s TV show, “Adam-12.” “I was like, ‘Okay, I want to do that.’ And then I went on my first ride along, and I knew this is what I wanted to do,” Dennis shares. After volunteering as a reserve officer in San Diego, Dennis came back to his hometown and joined the Stockton Police Department when he was 21. He served as a police officer for 30 years, working through the ranks to become Lieutenant. Dennis says some of his best years were as a district commander. “You got to know the neighbors and the problems they dealt with, and help them resolve things,” Dennis shares. While he loved his job, Dennis re-

tired from the force for health reasons, realizing he needed to take a step back after having surgeries for cancer. But while he knew he needed to give up active police work, he soon found another avenue to pursue his passion for public safety: security. After working for a local security corporation in Stockton for 10 years, Dennis opened up a side business, Calidad Services Inc., which specializes in advanced security technology, like video surveillance with analytics and artificial intelligence. “Calidad means quality. Our model is quality security with a concierge touch,” Dennis says. Through the business, Dennis says he enjoys collaborating with the police and District Attorney’s office to help stop crime before it happens. He also appreciates the opportunity to work

with his son, who assists the business with his entrepreneurship and marketing skills. “It’s so fulfilling to be in partnership with your son,” says Dennis. “I’m able to teach him, and it helps further our relationship.” When he’s not working two post-retirement security jobs, Dennis stays busy volunteering in the community through organizations like the Animal Protection League and Showered With Love, a nonprofit that provides showers to unhoused people. Dennis credits his mother, who lost everything as a young Jewish girl in Germany during the Holocaust, as his inspiration to serve the community. “She learned, and taught me, how to treat people. And that [adversity] could happen to any of us,” Dennis reflects. “We all have to help each other.”

RAY

CALL When Ray Call began his career as a firefighter with the Stockton Fire Department, he knew he had discovered a passion for helping others. “It was such a great job, serving the community and helping people. Why would anybody want to do anything else?” Ray shares. The fire department is also where Ray first got involved with local nonprofits at the recommendation of his boss and mentor, Fire Chief Gary Gillis. “What got me started really was that Gary had coached me,” Ray explains. “One of his philosophies was that, if you’re in the upper ranks of the fire department, you have to give back. He wanted

all of his officers to be involved in a nonprofit of some kind.” For his service commitment, Ray decided to join the Child Abuse Prevention Council, where Gary also served on the board. Within a month, Ray was appointed the fundraising chair. “I knew very little about it,” Ray admits. “But I did it with gusto, and I ended up becoming the president of the board of CAPC.” Since Ray volunteered at the CAPC, the organization has grown from providing $1 million in services to $18 million. “They were close to closing their doors because they were so far behind. So, it was a very big success there, to turn that around

with strategic planning and hiring a new CEO,” Ray says. After retiring from the fire department, Ray started working toward his master’s degree in organizational leadership, with the goal of running a nonprofit. He hadn’t even been retired for a week when we found the opportunity he’d been looking for: a CEO appointment at United Cerebral Palsy. After five successful years there, Ray retired again, this time hoping to start his own leadership coaching business. Then the YMCA called. “Once again, it was my boss from the fire department, Gary Gillis. He called me and said, ‘Hey, our CEO is leaving. Could you come and run the place while we hire a new CEO?” Ray recalls. Ray served as interim director for the YMCA for five months. Then, the Emergency Food Bank called. Then, the YMCA again. Then, the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. “I was with each of these non-profits from anywhere to four to seven months to help them hire the next individual. And now they’ve all got really good CEOs and they’re doing really well,” Ray shares. Through working with so many local nonprofits, including the North Stockton Rotary—which he's been president of twice—Ray says his experiences have broadened his horizons to all the different types of needs in the community: “My personal motto is to be the best I can be and to help others do the same.”

MARY

PENNINI

Born and raised in San Joaquin County on a dairy farm in Roberts Island, Mary Pennini fondly remembers attending Pixie Woods Amusement Park as a child in the 1950s. “I’ve always been partial to Pixie Woods because my mom brought us here when it first opened in 1954. It’s like our own little Disneyland,” Mary smiles. “That’s what I like to refer to it as, or the ‘Jewel of Stockton.’” Before becoming president of the Pixie Woods Board of Directors, Mary worked for the Stockton Chamber of Commerce for 23 and a half years, starting as a secretary and working her way up to membership director and office manager. She says her favorite part of the job was being so connected with her community. “The chamber was the perfect conduit to that because we were involved with all the businesses and all the political people. It opened a lot of doors,” Mary explains. Mary first became involved with Pixie Woods when she was still working for the chamber. She was invited to a Pixie Woods board meeting, where she convinced the board that joining the chamber would be profitable. But she didn’t join the board herself until a conversation with her close friend— and now vice president—Gae Stewart. “I’ve always had a place in my heart for Pixie Woods. So Gae asks me, ‘Why don’t you come on the board? Since you love it?’ So I started coming to meetings, and sure enough, I’ve been involved for 10 years now,” Mary shares. Mary says her passion for the park comes from a desire to create more opportunities for children in the Stockton community. “There’s not a whole lot for children to do in Stockton,” she explains. “This is a safe place where they can come and be kids.” In addition to Pixie Woods’ merrygo-round, train, and other rides and attractions, the park also hosts events for families, like the annual “Christmas in July” celebration, where kids can take their photo with Santa Claus, and October’s “Monster Mash,” which provides Stockton children a safe place to celebrate Halloween. board also host annual wine and beer tasting fundraisers, although they’ve had to cancel for the last two years due to COVID-19. Despite setbacks, Mary remains optimistic and grateful for the support she’s seen from the Stockton community. “We have some great donors. There’s a lot of great people in the community that really want to help,” says Mary. “The young kids are our future. We just want to see them continue to get a healthy environment.”

When Roger Coover graduated with a degree in business, he was thinking about law school. Instead, a passion for photography led him to pursue journalism, where he ultimately found his niche in advertising and publishing. “Once I got started in the newspaper business, I enjoyed it so much,” Roger shares. “I loved being able to produce a new product every day. From there, I spent my entire career in newspapers, working my way up through the business side.” In his last 20 years in the newspaper industry, Roger and his wife relocated to Stockton, where he became publisher of The Record. “My wife and I really liked the fact that it’s a very diverse area,” Roger says. “It’s a goodsized community where you can make a real difference.” After leaving The Record in 2017, Roger took

some time away from work to destress and enjoy his retirement, as well as reflect on his next steps. A religious man, Roger spent time in prayer, hoping for a sign of what he should do next. But the message he kept receiving was simply to be patient. Then, he got a call from Marty Weybret, a fellow local newspaper publisher Roger knew from his time at The Record. “He came to me and said, ‘The Lodi Boys & Girls Club needs somebody who can help straighten out finances and organization and pull it back together,'” recalls Roger. Roger was originally set to help the Boys & Girls Club for just 90 days. He’s been Executive Director for two years now, and says he hopes to continue for many years to come. Much of Roger’s work centers around networking, raising funds, and providing services that are central to the Boys & Girls Club’s mission. “People have been a great support for this club for over 60 years, and we will need to continue to receive support from the community for the next 60 years,” says Roger. In addition to providing a safe place for kids to socialize after school, the organization provides access to structured programming that allows students to develop skills in community service, computers, art, and other areas. “The most rewarding aspect for me is when I hear kids say that this club not only changed their life, but saved their life,” says Roger. “Every child deserves a chance to be their best.”

A

home museum littered in ribbons, stables filled with award-winning stallions and mares, a prestigious lineage dating back nearly a century—these attributes are what set Jack Tone Ranch apart from other horse breeders in the country. A

long line of aristocratic horses carrying the highest national distinctions (including U.S. National and International Champion and Top 10 Mares and Stallions) takes up residence on a family ranch on the outskirts of Stockton. Over the years it has transformed from a family farm home with a few well-bred horses to today, a fully active ranch offering boarding, sales, riding lessons, training, and more. The breeding practices, however, are what set Jack Tone apart—and it all started with a horse named Fadjur. Marjory F. Tone—the mother of Kathleen Hammer, 79, the family’s living matriarch who runs the ranch with her family today—always loved horses. Marjory’s father used to tell her stories of gorgeous Arabian horses and said he hoped one day she would see one in person. When Kathleen was five, Marjory bought her and her siblings a pony and began breeding. A trainer she worked with took in a half-Arabian and Marjory immediately saw a difference in temperament. She started renting out her barn space in trade for an Arabian horse and saved up money from selling chicken eggs to buy the horses’ sister, who became one of the world’s most accomplished Arabian mares. “Her record still stands,” Kathleen says. The mare, named Fer-Natta, had three daughters that each produced five champions. “My mother had an eye for a horse.” While Marjory’s mares were bringing in plenty of championships, it was her first stallion that put Jack Tone Ranch on the map. Fadjur was just a six-monthold colt when Marjory found him in Bell, California. She begged her husband, Jack, to purchase him as a match for her mares. Finally, for her birthday, Fadjur was brought home for Marjory. With Marjory’s gentle hand and unique training intuition, Fadjur became a one-of-a-kind horse and was eventually inducted into the Arabian Horse Hall of Fame. A leading sire of champions, Fadjur graced the covers of many horse magazines, heralded for his distinct look. His sons, grandsons, and granddaughters all followed in Fadjur’s footsteps. “A dynasty in the Arabian horse breed,” Kathleen says. Some of the top breeding and performing horses in the breed today are descendants of the late Fadjur. “His look is recognizable.”

Breeding Champions

Marjory deserves much of the credit for Jack Tone Ranch’s success. Kathleen, her husband, Jerry, and her sons and daughters inherited the ranch and its operations, but Marjory’s influence remains as the family uses her breeding program to continue turning out champion horses. The family stays true to her original mission—breeding the most beautiful Arabian horses possible without sacrificing intelligence, heart, strength, athletic ability, or hereditary disposition. “Our breeding goal at the Jack Tone Ranch is to produce horses with the incredible Arabian type, beauty, and power of our ideal horse: The fabulous Fadjur,” Kathleen says. “We’re using some of the techniques that were used to create and develop new breeds,” Margie says of the program her

grandmother developed. In the case of Fadjur, the family wanted to pass on the attributes that made him a champion. Although his high, arched neck, beauty, and conformation made him a star, his presence is perhaps what won judges over. “He was so loving that never once in his life did he fail to say hello to a visitor, no matter how many had come before them,” according to a Jack Tone Ranch pamphlet. He was known for having an “almost-human intelligence and understanding.” To keep Fadjur’s influence prominent, sisters, half-sisters, and granddaughters of Fadjur were bred to him. When looking for mares to breed with Fadjur, Marjory specifically chose those that bore the strongest resemblance to him. Direct descendants of Fadjur are given their own name but Fadjur’s or Fadjurz comes before their given name to indicate their connection to his legacy. In all of his years of breeding—up until the age of 30— Fadjur was only bred naturally;

artificial insemination was never used. In all, he was responsible for siring over 800 purebreds and many more Half-Arabians. His descendants have found their way across the world with kin landing in Argentina, Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, England, West Germany, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, Spain, Wales, and the state of Hawaii. While Fadjur has since passed on, his descendants continue to be part of the breeding process to keep the line as pure as possible. One of the most successful descendants of Fadjur is Khemosabi, who descended from Fadjur crossed with a halfsister. Khemosabi inherited the title of Leading Sire of Champions after Fadjur passed. Fadjur produced National Champions with a full sister as well. In 1970, when America’s 10 Living Legends of the Arabian Breed were named, five were related to Fadjur. Fadjur himself is a consistent name on every top ten national list paying tribute to Arabian horses. The dedication to lineage is one of the reasons people trust the Tone family with breeding. two to five foals (babies) are born on the ranch, and they board 30-40 horses for other nearby residents, caring for them on a daily basis. The family has a herd of 43 of their own. Horses can run in the thousands of dollars, a far cry from the $600 Marjory’s husband paid for Fadjur, but also much less than the hundreds of thousands one could expect at the height of horse breeding in the 1970-80s.

A Family Tradition

As important as the good work with horses is and the ability to breed champion horses right here in Stockton, something stronger bonds the family to this work. “We were all raised here, and we all were taught to respect the history,” Marjory Pope, the daughter of Kathleen, says. The ranch is still in the Tone family, headed by Jerry, 80, and Kathleen Hammer, their family: Marjory, Peggy Morrissey, Robert Hammer, and Gerard Hammer, and their seven grandchildren—the sixth generation of Tones loving horses on the Jack Tone Ranch. Peggy and Steve Morrissey and their family still live on property, in the family’s original house, while Jerry and Kathleen built a second home onsite. Shaded by giant oak trees along the Calaveras River, the 40acre farm offers more than horses. In fact, Jack Tone, who first founded the ranch after traveling west from New York with the Audubon Party, made his first money in farming, starting with potatoes sold to the gold miners in 1849 when the ranch was

46

established. The family farm is still operational, and the original fruit orchard counts as some of the first crops ever grown in San Joaquin County—now a bustling center of California agriculture. Today, Jack Tone’s family grows cherries, grapes, walnuts, and oat hay (of which they go through quite a lot of for the resident horses). Coined as the oldest continuously operating horse ranch in California, Jack Tone Ranch was designated a California historical landmark and many of the original buildings still exist on the property, creating a living, breathing museum in the family home. And while the family owns the land, they aren’t set on keeping it to themselves. California history buffs and equestrians are welcome to make an appointment to tour the facilities regarding lessons, boarding, and/or sales. “We like to share it with people,” Kathleen says.

“The love of horses is just born in you,” Marjory F. Pope

DENISTRY PROFILES

Maywell L. Inong, DDS General & Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. Maywell Inong is a Stockton native and graduate of the University of the Pacific. She opened her dental practice in 1999. Over the years she has become known as a leading dentist within the Stockton area. Dr. Inong went into dentistry with an earnest desire to partner with her patients to help them pursue a lifetime of optimal dental health. Towards this goal, she has been a leader in the field of dentistry by always endeavoring to become certified in the latest medical technology breakthroughs and surgical techniques that she feels can ensure better treatment success for her patients. As an example, Dr. Inong is the only dentist within 100 miles of the Stockton area that is an experienced practitioner in the use of Pinhole Surgery Technique (PST) to treat gum recession by eliminating the need for painful gum grafts and long months of healing times that were seen in the past. Treatment recovery times for this new procedure have been reduced to just days with minor to no pain at all. Though she has been given many opportunities over the years to expand her practice to multiple offices, she has decided that by having just one location with her as the sole dentist on staff, it is the best way to maintain a personal relationship with her patients to attend properly to treating their individual health needs. Kacy Lane, DDS |

Pediatric Dentistry

For Dr. Lane, dentistry is about showing her patients and their caregivers that the dentist is an integral part of their childhood experience, and that is a great thing! Making the idea of going to the dentist more appealing and approachable, and less stress and fear-inducing, is a challenge she welcomes. Her favorite part of being a dental provider is the relationship she has with her community. “I enjoy meeting families and getting to know my patients. Many become friends for life,” Dr. Lane says. Dr. Lane did her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Paris, la Sorbonne, then graduated from Dental School in 2010 from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Ann Arbor. Instead of completing her residency, she worked in federally funded community health centers for two years on the island of Oahu, in Waianae and in Kahuku, where she treated the local children. “My fondest memories are definitely the years in Hawaii. I learned so much about community, children, and love,” says Dr. Lane. 1002 W. Robinhood Dr., Stockton (209) 645-3200 MyChildrensChoice.com

The Skunk Train

When the temperatures begin to rage in San Joaquin County, many of us are sweating to seek refuge in a cooler climate. The coastal town of Mendocino, settled at the end of a winding road that makes its way through the Northern California terrain, offers sanctuary from the booming sun, with cloud-covered skies and a chilly ocean breeze settling over the sleepy town year-round. You won’t need to escape inside to avoid the booming sun, instead, embrace the outdoors with an itinerary ripe with outdoor exploration, patio wine tasting, and more.

escape The Digs Mendocino, Little River, Fort Bragg—they are all names of small communities dotting the cliffside coast. Each one offers its own charms, but mostly a lot of similarities. Drive in for delicious, fresh seafood; quality, cool-temperature wines; and heavy forests brimming with Redwood trees that offer additional shade on a rare hot day. Many of the inns and hotels here are wellappointed, boasting big amenities and spacious rooms, or quaint bed-and-breakfast style escapes. Everyone has heard of Brewery Gulch Inn, with its long list of accolades including a recent Travel + Leisure 2021 nod as one of the best 500 hotels in the world. The sprawling rooms encapsulated inside the arts-and-crafts style abode offer a luxurious escape from the noise outside. Feast on organic, local cuisine prepared by a top chef in between treks on the expansive estate. Onsite, guides set up epic adventures including horseback riding on the beach and kayaking voyages through sea caves along the coast. If hiking is on your agenda, ask about the backpacking picnic for two, or enjoy all three adventurous outings by booking a North Coast Adventure Package through the hotel. 9401 CA-1, Mendocino A quick jaunt from Brewery Gulch (approximately five minutes), Liver River Inn stands like a stately manor, beckoning guests to seek refuge in its oceanview rooms, complete with fireplaces, jacuzzis, steam showers, and more. At Little River, you feel like part of the family, whether you’re dining on-site or traipsing across the grounds, enjoying the panoramic views. A special stargazing package offers the perfect blend or romance and adventure. Take off across the property with a backpack full of supplies in hand (provided by staff), including a carafe of hot chocolate to share as you navigate the skies and identify constellations (or make up your own) on a plush blanket in the grass. 7751 CA-1, Little River

Adventure One of the best upsides to the perpetually cool weather on the coast is you don’t have to avoid the great outdoors, especially during a time of year when outdoor temperatures can be sweltering at home. Amongst Mendocino’s towering bluffs and seaside cliffs is a lot of adventure to be had—and we dare you to make the most of your impressive surroundings. Start your morning with a round of golf at Little River Inn. Located onsite, the nine-hole course is different than most you’ve played on—in large part because it’s an Audubon-certified sanctuary. Between putts don’t forget to look up and enjoy the ocean views, as you make your way through the challenging course, or look for deer peeking between the trees. For something a bit out of the ordinary, consider taking a ride on the rails. The Skunk Train is infamous—a train ride through the forest offers stunning views of gigantic redwood trees aboard

an old school choo-choo (dating back to 1885). Riders make their way to the Glen Blair Junction and get a moment to stretch their legs and explore before popping back on the train to head to home base. If you want an excursion that’s a bit more outside of the box, consider railbikes. This emerging trend takes riders along the railroad tracks, in front of the skunk train—a safe distance, we promise—as they pedal railcar bikes (complete with a handbrake on one side but no steering required) on the rails, two riders per bike in a follow-the-leader style. On the way back, riders can choose to ride

their bikes back to the depot or jump off and take the train, getting two experiences in one. Fort Bragg We don’t recommend leaving Mendocino without making your way to at least one hiking trail. Much of the terrain remains untouched, providing picturesque views at every turn, whether you’re up for a long hike or a short one. To score waterfall views, trek the Russian Gulch Fern Canyon (6.2 miles). For something easier, the Mendocino Headlands Trail proffers views of the coastline (4 miles). Perhaps the quickest trail to conquer is the Mendocino Cliffs Trail (.9 miles). Also

within Mendocino Headlands State Park, Big River Trail gives moderate hikers 16 miles of potential terrain as well as access to paddle boarding and kayaking hotspots.

Wine & Food Either on your way into town, or your way out of town, we suggest a stop at Bee Hunter Wine in Anderson Valley. The owner and winemaker Ali has a vivacious personality as she serves guests along with a small staff—and occasionally a gaggle of puppies (birthed by the winery pooch JJ, whom the JJ Cuvee is named for). The diet-friendly ratatouille (gluten-free and vegan) is made with mouthwatering and tender squash, eggplant, olives, and sofrito. Nearby, Noyo Harbor Inn sits between sweeping views of forests and a river, gifting unmatched views to diners. Come before sunset to see it at its best and dine outside when the weather is right. Occasional case discounts offer the best bang for your buck. 14251 CA-128, Boonville Along Mendocino’s Main Street, small shops and charming eateries abound. There are also some tasting rooms worth a visit. Meyer Family Cellars serves wines by the glass as well as tasting flights both inside its small storefront and on a back patio. Wines are created from a mix of vinos from both Yorkville Highlands and Mendocino, turning out an impressive crop of cabernet sauvignons, as well as other varietals. We recommend teasing your palate with one of many syrahs, or diving into a glass of chocolatey port. 45156 Main St., Mendocino Whether you opted for a room at the Little River Inn, or not, dinner is a must. Open to guests of the hotel as well as visitors, the outdoor patio shines beneath a sheet of twinkling lights—a truly magical experience that offers seamless transport to a forest wonderland. While near the coast it’s hard to pass up seafood, so starting with appetizers of calamari, beau soleil oysters, and fresh steamed clam chowder certainly will not disappoint. For dinner, don’t overlook

escape Healing on the Coast Perhaps you’re looking for a different experience on the coast. If you’ve ever been intrigued by Eastern medicine or healing on a deeper level, Mendocino offers a lineup of alternative experiences for those with an open mind or simply a when-in-Rome attitude. Derived from Shinrin-Yoku, a Japanese preventative medicine that translates to “forest bathing,” Mendocino offers many similar excursions. The idea is to ignite all five senses while spending time beneath a canopy of towering trees—in this case Mendocino’s infamous redwoods. Even Western doctors have begun to herald the practice, linking forest bathing to reduced blood pressure, lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), and a more robust immune system. In Japan, it is said that forest bathing can counter cancer, strokes, depression, and anxiety. The group began prepping food in July for the September event. She says volunteer numbers aren’t what they used to be, so freezing goods for a couple of months helps the small team prepare. Her favorites are the melokarona, an oval cookie baked with orange juice and honey and dipped in syrup before it’s sprinkled with nuts. People go crazy for the goods not just because St. Basil’s has a reputation for producing the best around, but also because they can be hard to come by. It’s easier than it once was with prepackaged goods available at Costco and places like Papapavlo’s making their

For three days, people drive from all over to visit Stockton’s storied event that offers an explosion of Greek culture, from music and dancing to food and more. own here and there, but there is still nothing like stepping foot into the church and hand-picking treats to take home with you. While many newcomers sign up to assist with one pastry or another, some of the women make a lot of sacrifices to meet demands. Nikki Tsirelas, who is in her 80s, gets her son to drive her from Manteca to Stockton just to make tsoureki (sweet bread). “She’s from Greece and she makes the best bread ever,” Gayle laments. Another friend of Gayle’s works with her to make around 600 pounds of syrup to be used on different goodies, including a booth of loukoumades (fried donut holes). In August, the team made 22 double batches of koulourakia for a total of 3,700 twisty cookies. In all, Gayle estimates she spends 50-60 hours just baking before the event to turn out about six to seven different types of pastries, and that’s not including the hours put in during the festival and after (for cleanup). “We don’t cut any corners at all,” she says.

ALL INCLUSIVE LODI WINE INDUSTRY OPENS THE DOOR TO INCLUSIVITY

David Phillips, Michael David Winery David and Heather Lucas, The Lucas Winery

 BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER Rodney Tipton, co-owner of Acquiesce Winery, felt helpless when he watched the nation struggling with the George Floyd incident. And he wasn’t about to stand idly by. He and his wife, Sue, immediately began to research how to make a difference within the Lodi wine industry. “I found data indicating the great diversity gap in the global wine industry and I began to think about how Acquiesce and others in the Lodi industry might help close that gap,” Tipton says. “After speaking with several fellow winery owners, it was clear that with the great breadth of wine related disciplines here in Lodi, plenty could be done.” Tipton quickly realized the most effective way to actualize his goal of inclusivity was to open doors to under-represented communities through hands-on immersion and networking. Before long, the Lodi Appellation Inclusion Collective was born, and Tipton had recruited some of the most wellrespected players in the region to donate funds. LAIC is comprised of grape growers, winery owners, marketing professionals, and financial pros.

The progressive LAIC members mobilized quickly to create an enrichment program and teamed up with the Roots Fund (a non-profit organization with a mission to invest in communities of color to provide those seeking a career in all aspects of wine). The goal was to bring in scholars and interested individuals from under-represented communities to Lodi wine country, immerse them in every aspect of the industry, and expose them to career opportunities in the region. In June, the LAIC hosted

five participants in a three-and-a-half-day program where they experienced all aspects of the Lodi wine industry from vineyard operations to winemaking, marketing, and sales. Winery owner and growers hosted the participants with jubilance for dinners, vineyard tours, winemaking seminars, and round table discussions. The group plans to host at least two Enrichment Camps each year, aiming to increase the racial and cultural diversity in the Lodi wine industry and the industry at large. The goal is simple—be the change you wish to see in the world. The LAIC is a qualified 501 (c) (3) taxexempt organization. To join or make a donation, visit LAIC-Collective.com

HIGH END TAPROOM CUISINE

HIGH WATER BREWING SERVES UNEXPECTED MENU ALONGSIDE LOCAL BREWS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D DAN HOOD It didn’t take long for High Water Brewing Taproom & Restaurant to become a local’s favorite spot for sipping brews after work or into the weekend. A baked wheel of brie dripping with fig and bacon compote and topped with

roasted garlic and toasted walnuts; ovenblistered shishito peppers sprinkled with lime salt and Parmesan cheese; Moroccan spiced roasted carrot Hummus; a lamb meatball pizza sizzling with pomegranate molasses and caramelized onion sauce, covered in a collection of sweet peppers, fresh tomatoes, purple onions, and cucumber dill Tzatziki sauce, and melting under a pile of feta and mozzarella cheese— these are not the items typically found on a brewery’s menu. At High Water Brewing, however, it’s become par for the course. One of the positives to come out of COVID-19 was the purchase of a BBQ and smoker. Originally, the plan was to prepare meats for events and catering jobs, but when the menu made a swift change to takeout only, Owners Steve and Barri wanted some heartier family-style dinner additions to their eclectic meals. As a result, High Water Brewing began cooking all of their own barbecue—tri-tip, chicken, and pulled pork, the last of which is the decadent topping gracing the now infamous South Western Mac and Cheese (elbow macaroni coasted in extra sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, and house-made beer cheese fondue before it’s

DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT DESSERT

Beer & Dessert? What a perfect pairing! HOT FUDGE BROWNIE SUNDAE Served in a souvenir campfire stout mug, the brownie is topped with vanilla bean ice cream, Campfire Stout (the brewery’s flagship beer) hot chocolate sauce, whipped cream, peanuts, and a cherry. CAMPFIRE STOUT S’MORE A fresh-baked dark Campfire Stout infused chocolate ganache served with a gooey toasted marshmallow atop graham cracker cookies (and baked inside the pizza oven that is pulling double duty). SUGAREE MAPLE BOURBON BREAD PUDDING Warm bread pudding draped with a Sugaree and Bourbon Caramel Sauce (using the seasonal brew), candied bacon, and toasted pecans.

topped with crispy bacon and 16-hour housesmoked pulled pork, chili Verde sauce, lime crema, and cilantro) and also appears in the panini pressed Cubano Sandwich. When it comes to pairing menu items with beers on tap, Steve has a few suggestions. The Goat Cheese Spread, a creamy mixture of goat, mascarpone, and cream cheese blended with dried apricots, peaches, nectarines, cranberries, raisins, and more, before it’s drizzled with orangemaple infused honey, apricot preserves, and served with a loaf of warm, sliced demi-bread, is complimented best by a dark beer like a stout or Porter. Or, for those who want to skip the darker brews, the Boom Boom Out Gose the Lights will do it justice. The chicken wings are the most

popular dish of all, coming in many styles and flavors including Korean, Caribbean-style, NY Buffalo-style, and bourbon and maple-glazed. For any of these, a lighter beer does well. Try the Central Valley White Ale or the Cucumber Kolsch. “They are dry enough they actually combat the oils a little bit,” Steve says. If you’d rather add some heat on your wings, reach for the Hop Riot IPA—the taproom’s most popular brew—to take it up a level. That South Western Mac and Cheese mentioned above is enjoyed best with the Central Valley Red Ale or the Tranquilize Scotch Ale, both with smoky qualities that bring out the smoke on the meats. “It’s a pretty diverse menu,” Steve says, with something for everyone, including the kids.

CAMPFIRE STOUT ICE CREAM FLOAT For the 21 and over crowd, this boozy take on a root beer float features a mug of Campfire Stout beer and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

DAVID’S NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA

A TASTE OF THE EAST COAST IN SAN JOAQUIN It’s one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever make. Staring down that list of specialty pizzas is a trip onto a game show. You know you’re going to win, but what will you be walking away with? A Taste of Gilroy, in all its pepperoni, garlic, and tomato splendor? Or perhaps a Chicken Fajita, garnished with chicken, bell peppers, red onions, and colby jack cheese? Or you could, you know, spice things up and build your own, too. And when there are so many appetizers, salads, and sandwiches to choose from, you’ll be straight back in that hot seat. Not that it’s a bad thing.

DON LUIS MEXICAN RESTAURANT AUTHENTIC MEXICAN COMFORT FOOD

At Don Luis Mexican Restaurant, the spotlight is on the authentic Mexican cuisine crafted from favorite family recipes. The menu is bursting with delightful combinations from the popular torta Cubana to the sizzling three amigos fajitas, plus a range of flavorful soups boasting homemade stocks and fresh tortillas served warm. Perhaps most impressive is the vast bar menu, featuring a host of rotating seasonal cocktails. “We welcome everyone,” Owner Alex Cuate says of the family-friendly atmosphere. EL CHILANGO CHIDO

MEXICO CITY INSPIRED TACO SHOP Cuahtemoc (Cuate) Rivera—the mastermind behind Don Luis Mexican Restaurant—is bringing a new venture to Stockton with a very special kind of taco shop. Inspired by his roots in Mexico City and a unique dish dubbed tacos de guisado (home-cooked meals served streetside in tortillas), El Chilango Chido is the newest Mexican eatery on the infamous Miracle Mile. Stop in for a fusion of Mexican- and American-style breakfast dishes or the signature tacos plus rice and beans for lunch.

FAT CITY BREW & BBQ SAVOR THE FLAVOR

Nestled away on the edge of the Miracle Mile sits a haven for those who have the heartiest of appetites. Whether you decide to split an appetizer among friends, go all in with a meat plate (plus two sides and a corn muffin), or hunker down with a two-handed sandwich, you are guaranteed to leave with a full stomach, and maybe just a bit of one of the delicious BBQ sauces still slathered on your face. Settle in for a long lunch or dinner and get ready for a flavor explosion. INSPIRED BY: California Style BBQ AVAILABLE NOW: Curbside pick-up and take-out, plus options to order through DoorDash and GrubHub.

INSPIRED BY: Cuate’s Mexico City roots and urban lifestyle COMING SOON: Late night hours for those that crave post-dinner tacos.

MAY WE SUGGEST: Fat City Wine Collection partnered with E2 Family Winery to produce a 2020 Rosé Wine from Lodi. The sweet, fruity nose gives way to distinct flavors of melon and strawberries. Crisp, refreshing, and slightly sweet, it’s the ideal wine to pair with BBQ.

MAY WE SUGGEST: The tacos de guisado take center stage. One of the chef’s favorites is the taco de costilla—ribs served in a morita and tomatillo sauce atop a fresh tortilla. Dishes come with a variety of accompaniments so diners can make each bite their own. El Chilango Chido 2535A Pacific Ave., Stockton (209) 808-5075

LOCAL RECIPES THAT BRING ON FALL FEELS  BY LINDSEY RODRIAN / D DAN HOOD Carol Isenberg is as sweet as baked goods—maybe that’s why her grandfather lovingly called her Cookie. From a young age

she found interest in the kitchen and with her mother’s support, a lifelong passion developed. A few years ago Carol created space in her busy schedule to apply for a cottage permit through Lodi’s health department that allows people to sell food baked at home. Create 2x butter pie crusts, fold together and place in

each addition until dough keeps form when pressed in hand. Transfer dough to a floured work surface, press and fold dough together to form a disk. Wrap disk in plastic wrap, chill for minimum of 30 minutes. When ready to bake, roll dough onto floured surface, transfer to pie plate, and return to fridge. TASTY TIPS If the dough feels too wet, sprinkle in a tablespoon of flour at a time until you have a play dough consistency and vice versa if it feels too dry. The dough can also be stored in the freezer and saved for later.

DON LUIS’ GUACAMOLE RECIPE

4 ripe avocados 1 jalapeno, diced Pro Tip: use just half of a jalapeno in wintertime but a whole jalapeno in summer months 1 Roma tomato, diced 10 cilantro, finely chopped Lemon juice, to taste Lime juice, to taste Salt, to taste Pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS: Mix all ingredients together until blended fully. Eat with corn chips or shovel onto other dishes as a topping.

FUN FACT

In September it’s okay to stick with a full jalapeno in your guac recipe—however we warn drought years sometimes produce more potent peppers—if you’re whipping up a batch in the winter months, however, it’s best to halve the jalapeno. That’s because peppers are stronger in winter, meaning dicing up a full pepper for your guacamole may leave your mouth on fire and drown out some of the other flavors of the dish.

THE INCREDIBLE, EDIBLE EGG— 10 WAYS  BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

Eggstra! Eggstra! Read all about them! Eggs are versatile, packed with protein, and can be consumed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. And while most folks can scramble an egg with ease, there are so many ways to enjoy this diet-friendly protein. Do us a favor and check out the simplest ways to prepare eggs and these ten tasty ways to up your egg game. DEVILED EGGS Place eggs in large stockpot of cold water and bring to a boil. Once water is rolling, cover pot and turn off heat. Let cook for 10 minutes. Run cold water over eggs and peel the shell. Slice in half vertically and remove yolk. In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, a dash of yellow mustard, sea salt, and pepper. Spoon mixture into the empty egg halves. Want to kick up the spice? Top the eggs with

102

chopped Calabrian peppers. Want to make them bougie? Top with caviar and smoked salmon.

Pro tip: always crack your eggs into a small bowl first in case you get shells and to prevent breaking the yolk.

POACHED EGG

SCRAMBLED EGGS

A poached egg makes the perfect addition to dishes like a decadent, creamy, pasta carbonara with pancetta. Or even better yet, add a runny, poached egg to a breakfast sandwich loaded with peppered bacon, aged cheddar cheese, and arugula, all piled high on a fluffy biscuit. Or, go classic with eggs benedict.

Simply beat eggs with salt and pepper before pouring into a medium-hot pan. Fold gently a couple of times for fluffy eggs. Pro-tip: if you want extra creamy eggs, add heavy cream, sour cream, or ranch dressing.

FRIED EGG Add a tablespoon of butter to the bottom of your sauté pan. Let melt before cracking eggs into pan over medium-high heat. Cook for a minute or two before adding an ounce or two of water. Cover and cook for one to two minutes until yolk reaches desired temperature.

HUEVOS RANCHEROS Top tortillas with beans, salsa, avocado, cilantro, cojita, and a fried egg for a hearty breakfast packed with flavor.

PORK BELLY WITH A QUAIL EGG Slow cook pork belly and place it atop a dollop of white bean hummus. Garnish with pickled purple onion, a fried quail egg, and micro greens for a fancy appetizer that will make you look like a gourmand.

SWEET POTATO EGG HASH Layer crispy sweet potatoes, French fries, onions, garlic, and bacon lardons in a cast iron skillet. Top with poached eggs, chopped chives, and a creamy hollandaise for a decadent brunch with friends.

DRESSED UP DEVILED EGGS Take your basic deviled egg recipe, and dress it up. Put a thin layer of creamy horseradish in the bottom of the hard-boiled egg yolk and top with egg mixture. Add crispy pancetta, thinly sliced green onion, and plate on a bed of lightly dressed arugula and spinach.

CAULIFLOWER FRIED RICE WITH EGGS We love adding a fried egg to a cauliflower fried rice for a savory and healthy dinner option that comes together in a flash. Add bell pepper, onion, and peas to your cauliflower fried rice, top with a fried egg, and garnish with sriracha.

AVOCADO TOAST Life doesn’t get much simpler or tasty than this. Mash fresh avocado with lemon juice, sea salt, and pepper, before piling it upon your favorite crusty bread. Top it with a poached egg and spicy red pepper flakes.

SUMMER BOUNTY PASTA WITH A POACHED EGG Boil up your favorite fettuccine pasta and add sautéed asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and a poached egg. Garnish with sea salt, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan for a delicious dinner.

OMELET The sky is the limit for this preparation. Fold sausage, mushrooms, and Gruyere cheese into omelet for an umami filled savory meal.

EGG-TOPPED PIZZA Take your favorite pizza and top it with a poached or fried egg. One of our go-to recipes is a pizza with an olive oil base, topped with fresh Parmesan, arugula, pancetta, and a fried egg.

FRITTATA Whisk eggs, cream, fresh herbs, and seasonal vegetables together with a healthy dose of salt and pepper. Bake in a greased cast iron skillet for a simple, savory dish that comes together with ease.
