Los Cabos is made up of two distinct cities: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. In Spanish, the name means “the capes” and refers to the complimentary areas that make up this region on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. And the theme of duality continues as the destination offers different experiences. BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Women’s Rugby Crashes into Lodi
THE BAY AREA TEAM PLAYS HOME GAMES
HESTON TARTE
When the Bay Area created the Bay Breakers, one of six foundational teams for a new women’s elite rugby league, they needed a place to play. Most of the team live in Oakland and surrounding cities but a field shortage left them without an appropriate arena for hosting games.
“It’s so cool to see so much representation out on the field,” she says, referencing women that are big, small, tall, short, and everything in between.
of business operations for Bay Breakers, Clare Grady, there is no higher level of women’s rugby being played in the United States outside of the Olympics and the World Cup.
Kelter, an American rugby union player and one of the standouts on the Bay Breakers, was the top scorer of the bronze medal team from the Olympics last summer.
“It is so much fun to watch a rugby game,” Clare says. For those unfamiliar with the popular European sport, Clare describes it as a combination of the full contact of football and the fast-paced nature of soccer. The pace of play is extremely fast and the sport doesn’t stop when players hit the ground. Instead the clock runs for a consecutive 80 minutes with very few interruptions. The players are also not known to wear much protective gear.
“The gameplay itself is incredibly exciting,” Clare shares. “If you know football or soccer, it’s not a leap to understand to what’s going on.”
The team’s first home game was on April 5 and since then they’ve been traveling to the other team’s home turfs in Boston, New York, Chicago, the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and Denver. They returned for a series of games in Lodi on May 25 with subsequent games scheduled for June 7 and 14.
The first home game saw a lot of Sacramento rugby fans, since the sport has a bit of a cult following in the city. But word has gotten out and Clare says there’s more interest from Lodi natives than ever before. While the first game saw 400 fans in the stands, ticket sales doubled between the first and second home games.
While Lodi is not in the Bay Area, the Grape Bowl made sense as an arena based on availability and it also offers a central location for fans from both the Bay Area and Sacramento to gather and watch a game.
One of the other aspects of the sport Clare loves as a proponent of women’s sports is the diversity on the field. In addition to women from different backgrounds, there are a variety of body types on the field, as well, proving rugby is a one-size-fits-most sport. “It’s so cool to see so much representation out on the field,” she says, referencing women that are big, small, tall, short, and everything in between.
This year’s beta season is only 12 weeks long with hopes of an expanded season in 2026. A full schedule and tickets are available on the website.
That’s where the Grape Bowl comes in, and why the Northern California professional rugby team plays home games in Lodi.
According to the general manager
“A lot of these women have played D1 rugby,” Clare shares. Almost all of the players were on the WPL Rugby team the Berkeley All Blues while five rostered players also compete with the USA Rugby Eagles, the team that will compete in the World Cup in England this fall. Alev

VIEW THE SUNSET FROM LODI LAKE
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Lodi Boathouse has always been a go-to spot for kayak rentals on Lodi Lake and the Mokelumne River. Rentals include single and tandem kayaks (including a premium version), paddleboards, and pedal boats.
But the brand doesn’t only rent out vessels and equipment to novice seamen.
While borrowing equipment and hitting the water at golden hour is the easiest way to sail off into the sunset, there are also guided tours available. Perhaps the most popular is the Sunset Paddle, which takes off along the Mokelumne River. This guided tour explores the magic of dusk on the water so kayakers can experience the changing summer skies as day gives way to night on a 90 minute excursion. Expert tip: bring glow sticks for ambiance (and additional safety).
Another sunset paddle is the annual summer solstice event that invites people to enjoy the longest day of the year with a late paddle time. Like other sunset paddles, the timing is just right to experience the changing skies and wade back in the dark.
LODI BOATHOUSE ALSO OFFERS OTHER THEMED PADDLE EXPERIENCES.
Every Thursday at noon the community is invited for a social paddle to meet new people with perhaps similar interests. The experience is free if you bring your own kayak and costs $20-45 for rental equipment.
Full Moon paddles happen when Mother Nature serves up a full moon. These guided experiences launch from the boathouse on Lodi Lake and traverse Mokelumne River as the bright moon lights up the night sky.
Early birds will enjoy calm waters on the same scenic route with sunrise paddle sessions while autumn brings a nature paddle to the calendar with an emphasis on fall colors.
The all skill level adventures also extend with a Father’s Day paddle perfect for both novices and seasoned pros. There’s always a discount for bringing your own kayak or SUP.
If you’re going it on your own, Lodi Lake is the best spot to launch. With sandy beaches easy to kick off from and low daily parking fees, getting on the water and enjoying a picnic on the beach is a breeze.

Stockton Civic Theatre Community Theater at its Core
THE JULY PRODUCTION WILL BE A COLLABORATION WITH TWO STOCKTON COLLEGES
BY REBEKAH MOAN
Stockton Civic Theatre (SCT) is not like other theater companies – for one, it’s been around for almost 75 years. When asked about its staying power, SCT Director of Marketing Sierra Fraser says, “I think it truly comes down to the community we have. We have so many people who have been a part of SCT for 50+ years in some cases, and it truly is a family.”
That family feeling is what keeps SCT going – it’s a place where people want to be whether that’s for a show or for summer camp. “We have a lot of people in the community who perform in the theater or work backstage and have been doing it for years and years,” she says.
The theater strives to create a diverse season every year with plays, musicals, and more risqué shows in its blackbox theater. There are eight productions every year with something nearly every month. “A lot of theater companies have maybe five shows a year,” Sierra says. In addition, SCT often obtains the rights to perform new shows on the early side because it’s an established, reputable institution. “We’re entrusted to take on these big projects and be leaders to do these big shows,” she adds.
Through June 8th, SCT is producing an evening of

10-minute plays. Then July 10-20th, SCT has a special production of “Ragtime,” which will be a collaborative effort with the University of the Pacific (UoP) Conservatory and the San Joaquin Delta College Drama Department. The show will be performed at the college, produced by SCT, and directed by a UoP professor.
“It’s really interesting because it’s the best of all worlds with SCT, Delta, and UoP putting on an amazing production,” Sierra says. “We’re a community theater and if you want to be more part of the community,
there’s no better way than partnering with the two big colleges in Stockton.”
Another unique feature of “Ragtime”? There will be a massive choir to sing all the musical numbers. “It will create a beautiful rich sound and won’t be your average show,” she says.

LEARN HOW TO REPEL MOSQUITOES AND PREVENT BITES
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Peak mosquito season is June to November in San Joaquin County since warmer weather attracts these pesky, blood-sucking bugs, and it takes as little as three days for them to develop in standing water. So, how do you protect yourself (and your family) from these sometimes harmless but potentially dangerous bites? Read on for suggestions.
PREP YOUR PROPERTY
Mosquitoes are likely to linger around standing water, so cleaning out your yard (and ridding it of even small pools of water) is one way to reduce activity at home. This extends to flower pots and saucers, rain water accumulated in BBQ and furniture covers, buckets, standing water in your garden, and honestly even a capful of water elsewhere. Keeping the water away will keep the mosquitoes at bay.
Other steps to take include using proper chemicals in your swimming pool, cleaning bird baths weekly, and fixing broken sprinklers and leaky faucets.
FAST FACTS
• Only female mosquitoes bite, using blood as nutrients for their eggs.
• Eggs in standing water develop into adult mosquitoes.
• A bottle cap of water is enough for mosquitoes to develop.
• Aedes aegypti, commonly known as the yellow fever mosquito, is now found in all incorporated cities and rural areas of San Joaquin County.
• Aedes aegypti can develop in five to ten days and live for two to three weeks. It tends to bite lower on the legs and ankles and is most active during the day.
• Aedes aegypti is currently a nuisance mosquito but can potentially carry yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The District's laboratory staff have not seen evidence of the aforementioned diseases in the local Aedes aegypti population of mosquitoes.
• The District highly recommends that people in San Joaquin County, cities, and rural areas request service through the SJ Mosquito website.
SHIELD YOURSELF
Wearing insect repellant when outdoors, especially during the most active times of day (dawn and dusk), is one of the best ways to prevent bites. Products including DEET tend to be very effective, but some people prefer to use chemical-free alternatives like oil of lemon eucalyptus. Mosquitoes not only hate that scent but can become disoriented from it.
DRESS FOR MOSQUITO SEASON
Mosquitoes often can’t bite through clothing, which means wearing long sleeves and pants will help deter them or at least block those bites, especially if you wear lighter colors as mosquitoes tend to be attracted to dark clothing. Use EPAregistered repellents to prevent mosquito bites. If you plan to sleep outdoors, you should also protect your sleeping quarters. Keep tents zipped up so mosquitoes can’t get in and use nets around common areas, outdoor sleeping quarters, and baby strollers and carriers. These nets will keep mosquitoes out.
GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT
While everyone should anticipate a few mosquitoes here and there, swarms of mosquitoes are less common. If you need to ask for help from San Joaquin County Mosquito & Vector Control District, file a request online at www. sjmosquito.org.

MUSIC IN THE VINEYARDS
The Groovin’ in the Grove series brings big names to Jessie’s Grove Winery. On June 21, fans can watch as two tribute bands battle it out in one epic showdown. There’s nothing like a sunset at Bokisch Vineyards, and every Friday the winery leans into the natural beauty that surrounds with the Sunset Sippin’ series. Wine and small bites
are available at the events and while they are dog and kid friendly, everyone over the age of 3 requires a ticket ($15 each).
Bokisch has also planned an elegant and themed Mediterranean night for June 28. The White Party is called a Night in Ibiza, featuring a lavish paella dinner paired with fine wines. And after dinner is finished, a DJ will transport guests to the southern shores of Spain where they can dance the night away.
On August 9, Bokisch will move the party to South America for a wine and dinner pairing in the vineyards focused on South American specials cooked over an open fire. After the al fresca dining comes to an end, the music will call you to the dance floor.

Alicia Villarreal will be showcasing her stellar voice on her Donde Todo Comenzó 2.0 U.S. Tour. The entire show is dedicated to nostalgia and recreating the magic that made her a household name. The show takes place at Bob Hope Theatre on July 12 at 8 PM.
Cody Johnson
A rotating line-up of both local and regional bands come into The Cellar Door (a tasting room that features both Michael David Winery and Van Ruiten Family Winery vinos) to showcase their talents. Guests can expect everything from smooth jazz to indie rock depending on the day. The next event is scheduled for June 7.

THE Events BEFORE THE Big Event
ALL THE LITTLE SHINDIGS LEADING UP TO THE BIG I DO’S
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Planning a wedding is a massive undertaking, and while we tend to focus on the final event, it’s important not to overlook those smaller celebrations leading up to the wedding. Take a look over all the can’t-skip parties before the big day, and get prepared for multiple celebrations.
ENGAGEMENT PARTY
EVENT: This is the first big event to celebrate your upcoming nuptials, and in many ways to announce your new status to the masses. Most couples will have one engagement party with family and friends while others choose to have a couple—perhaps to break up larger families (one for the bride’s side and one for the groom’s side?) or to host in more than one locale.
HOST: It’s perfectly acceptable to host this one as bride and groom, however, you may also have a parent or close
friend offer to throw the party for you. Etiquette says either will do. And if more than one person really wants to host, you can create co-hosts or have more than one party if it makes sense to do so.
THE PARTY: This event doesn’t have to be formal. Feel free to ditch the place cards and even the seated dinner and instead have small bites at a friend’s home with ‘gram-worthy décor, or do it happy hour style at a local restaurant. For something even more laid back, this event can be a midday BBQ or even a house party. The choice is really up to you!
WHO TO INVITE: You can invite just about anyone you plan to invite to the wedding, but engagement parties often have a more intimate guest list. So invite your closest friends, your immediate family, and coworkers.
BRIDAL SHOWER
EVENT: This is one of the more popular events leading up to the wedding. Typically it’s girls-only, however co-ed parties are becoming more popular. This event should be a little more formal than the engagement party. It can still be hosted at a friend’s home, but it can also be held at a local event space or a restaurant. Typically it will be a daytime event with some curated activities and structure.
HOST: Family members like sisters or moms may play host to this event. Or the maid or matron of honor, perhaps along with the other bridesmaids, can throw this event for the bride. Sometimes a group effort, especially if you have a tight-knit group of girlfriends, can take the pressure off of one person.
BRIDE GUIDE
wedding
THE PARTY: This event can be themed and often it includes pretty décor, plenty of photo ops, and some fun games to break the ice. Oh—and presents! Plus, don’t forget the cake and probably some sort of signature cocktail or bubbly bar.
WHO TO INVITE: Again, traditionally this is girl’s only, so make the guest list out of many of the female invitees to your wedding. Don’t skip the groom’s family either. Your future female inlaws should be invited, too!
BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE PARTIES
EVENT: This is the big night out to say farewell to the single life! Most brides and grooms have their own. It can be in town or out of town in a locale chosen by the bride or her maid of honor. Sometimes, however, brides and grooms decide to have a joint party or co-parties where they meet up part way through.
HOST: The best man and/or maid of honor plans these events, sometimes with help from the rest of the bridal party.
THE PARTY:
This is up to your discretion or the discretion of the host, but typically it’s a late night or over-night party. Or, it could be a day (or two!) of wine tasting.
WHO TO INVITE: This may be the smallest guest list of any of the events. Choose wisely but always include your wedding party. Other close friends, co-workers, and siblings/cousins may also make the cut.
REHEARSAL DINNER
EVENT: The night before the wedding you’ll dine with outof-town guests and members of your wedding party, likely after the wedding rehearsal.
HOST: Tradition says the groom’s family hosts this event, but really any close family member or friend of the bride or groom could pick up the duties.
THE PARTY: Hosted at a restaurant or a family home, this event is typically relaxed but not always casual. It always includes a full dinner and mostly just focuses on time to socialize.
WHO TO INVITE: This isn’t a time to invite the whole wedding to a second meal. Instead, keep this list to the wedding party, close family and friends, and out-of-town guests.
A Tale of Two Cabos
CABO SAN LUCAS AND SAN JOSE DEL CABO FORM THE POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION, LOS CABOS
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Los Cabos is made up of two distinct cities: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. In Spanish, the name means “the capes” and refers to the complimentary areas that make up this popular tourist region on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. And much like its name suggests, the theme of duality continues as the destination offers two very different experiences: a bustling city center with ample night life and adventurous marina and a quieter luxury rich in culture and art.
SAN JOSE DEL CABO
This resort city offers a slower pace for those who are truly there to vacation instead of travel. The city center, or centro, comes alive with vibrant artwork and authentic cultural experiences where The Main Square is home to art galleries, restaurants, and shopping. On Thursday nights much of the year, it transforms into a lively art walk where throngs of people meander around the cobblestone streets and restaurants bring in live musicians to punctuate the long evenings. The event takes place from 5-9 p.m. and usually includes late night shopping where galleries open their doors to the public.
Visiting outside of the art walk, you’ll still be able to enjoy the plaza and all it has to offer. The streets are easy to navigate with palateria (ice popsicle shops) and jewelry stores selling hand-made goods of the finest quality. You’ll also find some of the more typical souvenirs but our focus was on the specialty pieces including colorful and handcrafted wooden bowls, carved dia de los Muertos statues, and blown glassware. Expert Tip: Don’t forget to snap a photo with the San Jose Del Cabo sign set against the colonial buildings.
If you’re a golf enthusiast, Cabo Real Golf Club is a must. The public course boasts ocean views from all of the 18 holes, which is probably the only detail you need to book a tee time. However, the course itself is beautiful, as well. While you’re enjoying the bright pink florals that permeate the entire coastal area set against an azure sky, you will be sinking putts on manicured greens and challenging
yourself with sand traps and other obstacles.
Mall Plaza Del Pescador is a high-end, walkable shopping district with several clothing stores and restaurants. There is a wine bar selling vinos from regions throughout Mexico as well as plenty of places to get your taco and tequila fix. Whether you’ve found an ocean-front resort on this main stretch or have rented a car for a day of exploration, it’s worthy of a stop off.
If you’d prefer to trade ocean views for a sustainable and upbeat jungle vibe, Acre should be on the schedule. This resort and restaurant is open to the public and revels in open-air experiences. You’ll feel like you’ve landed in Costa Rica, navigating winding pathways flanked by giant palms. You can even book a private treehouse for your stay. If you don’t choose to call Acre home, come out for a meal of fish tacos and prosciutto pizza served with margaritas and palomas and take the time to pet the animals at the on-site sanctuary.
THE IN-BETWEEN
Situated in the middle of the two cities is Grand Velas, a sprawling luxury property with a family-friendly resort and a more intimate, adultsonly boutique hotel.
The resort gives in to complete relaxation. Rooms with large plunge pools on the balcony, fire pits that flick on with the flip of a switch, and a double lounger with an ocean view are the epitome of luxury and style. With an all-inclusive package, you can order breakfast spreads delivered to your room at your preferred wake up time and sip coffee overlooking the ocean. From mid-December to April, whales are active in the Sea of Cortez and it's not uncommon to spot dozens teaching the babies how to
flip just beyond the rocky shoreline. If you’re accustomed to the finer things in life, this is your destination. Check-in begins in the bar with a welcome cocktail and an ocean view instead of behind a stuffy desk. You can gorge on tacos and fruity salads at Roca where tables overlook the ocean and the mocktails leave nothing to be desired—there are regular cocktails, too—or enjoy the bounty
of 2-Michelin-star chef Sidney Schutte at the Japanese fine dining concept Loto Robata Grill
Breakfast gives off White Lotus vibes with a buffet meal and friendly staff while poolside service is available delivered right to your first come-first-serve canopy just steps from the swim up bar. The bright tiled infinity pool edges up to the beach where sea life makes its presence known. And when you’re ready to dry off for a few, a long walk along the beach—especially at golden hour—feels like living in a romcom.
While the boutique hotel has plenty to keep guests busy from tequila, wine, and
Grand Velas Boutique Hotel
chocolate tastings to yoga and cooking classes (all included), guests staying here also have access to the larger property next door, which happens to be family friendly. The 5 Diamond AAA property boasts seven restaurants— including the contemporary Mexican concept Frida and a languid tasting menu served at Lucca—and three infinity pools.
Private butlers and on-call golf cart rides between the properties are just the beginning of the little extras employed to make visitors feel like royalty during their stay. You can even ask the concierges to set you up with sailings to Lover’s Beach or horseback riding on the sand. At the end of it all our only complaint was that we simply didn’t have enough time to do nothing.

CABO SAN LUCAS
Different from the easy and laidback approach in other parts of Los Cabos, Cabo San
Lucas blends the same dreamy ocean views with for those with a perhaps more adventurous spirit.
To be in the middle of it all, book a resort minutes from nightlife and the bustling marina. We’re partial to Corazón (the Spanish word for heart) because it provides a high-end experience in a central location.
It’s worth the splurge for an ocean view with a balcony (and preferably a private hot tub, too) where you can watch pink-hued, golden hour sunsets. Some nights fireworks erupt in the night sky and the rooftop bar, Rooftop 360, plays music well into the night Thursday through Sunday.
The lights stay on a little later at Corazón where you can swim and order drinks at one of the property’s three pools. While there are two all-ages pools and two hot tubs open all day, the Rooftop 360 pool is the heart of Corazón. In fact, it’s so popular that anyone we ran into throughout Cabo and heard where we were staying immediately mentioned it (as well as the best views in Los Cabos).
During the day, order signature coconut cocktails— yes, served in giant coconuts—and swim to your heart’s desire. Then come back at night to watch the sunset with a margarita in hand or schedule a private tequila tasting with a local connoisseur.
Corazón also hosts its own beach club on one of Cabo’s only swimmable beaches, complete with day beds on the sand and a DJ. The blue umbrellas and

SAY SPAAAA
If you’re going to give in to utter bliss, you have to take advantage of the on-site spas. At Grand Velas Boutique Hotel, the cyclical, guided experience is a journey of healing and rejuvenation. A seemingly neverending rotation of cold plunges, saunas, pressure jets, and ice baths heal you from the inside out. Even without a booked appointment, the process helps to release every stressor from your body, ending with a cup of hot tea and a vibrating, zero-gravity experience that feels more high-tech than you’d expect in the otherwise natural environment. Although we certainly recommend a massage if you can find the time. The treatment rooms overlook the pool and offer ever amenity you could possibly imagine.
At Corazón, Sparitual provides a mini retreat to a secluded part of the resort. The white walls and blue-tinged touches give off a Mykonos feel both in and outside of the spa, setting the stage for a truly relaxing evening. A day pass gets you access to the sauna and hot tub, while private treatment rooms cater to sore muscles with aromatherapy and hot stone massages as well as full body scrubs and facials.

beer buckets offer a place to step into the water or lounge just by it with exceptional service so you never have to leave your little slice of heaven. And being part of the beach club means the ultimate in comfort—the area is actually roped off from the general public who often come in off cruise ships to enjoy jet ski and beach chair rentals.
If you look down the beach, you’ll notice a line of beach clubs during the day, each with its own flavor and vibe. If you don’t want to be directly on the beach, sip your cocktails overlooking the action at the beach club bar.
When the sun dips below the horizon, the party heats up in Cabo San Lucas, although admittedly it never truly stops. A quick five-minute Uber will get you to the heart of the action, with multi-
story nightclubs vibrating with music and frozen cocktails taking the edge off of warm nights. Classics like Senor Frogs and Squid Row draw a crowd, and there’s shopping between stops.
In the Marina you can set sail on a sunset catamaran cruise to view the famous Arch and enjoy an evening sipping champagne and margaritas on the water. It’s an elevated nighttime experience booked largely by couples or families. The trips last around 2.5-hours, circling the bay to gain different vantage points while at sea. Regardless of where you end up, take time to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. The twinkling lights, the lit-up party boats on the water, the turquoise glow of the ocean, it’s an unreal sight to see, unlike anything experienced in the United States.

COMMUNITY
A FARM for Everyone
JAMES CHINCHIOLO OPENS HIS CHERRY & WALNUT ORCHARDS TO THE COMMUNITY
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
There’s no place quite like the farm. And for James Chinchiolo, his cherry and walnut orchards in Linden and Lodi are a connection point between the larger community and modern agriculture.
Every spring, James opens his cherry orchard to visitors to pick and purchase cherries by the pound. The u-pick season typically lasts for three weekends in May and June with five cherry varieties ripening at their own pace.
Throughout the season, in
u-pick,” James compares. “The main criteria [for staff] is everyone is a customer service agent.”
The extra emphasis on education aligns with Chinchiolo Farming Co.’s mission to help people develop an intimate relationship with modern agriculture. And if picking cherries isn’t enough, James hosts guided orchard walks where he dives deeper into cherry harvesting and the overall industry.
James is developing a fall experience to debut this September and October with a corn maze and pumpkin patch in the walnut orchard for a real country experience.
The orchard also hosts an annual farm to table dinner. This year’s ticketed event took place on May 31 and offered a four-course wine pairing menu with all food prepared by The Kitchen @ Stonebrier and paired with a local Lodi winery. Guests were invited to roam the orchards for sunset cherry picking and enjoy the natural beauty of the farm.
Chinchiolo’s roots in traditional farming run deep. The farm was originally founded in 1918 by family members who had come through Ellis Island from Sicily and relocated to Boston.
order, you’ll be able to pick Coral Champagne, Brooks, Tulare, Bing and Lapins cherries on the farm.
The u-pick system is similar to other farms, but James insists the experience is elevated, and slightly more expensive. Not only does the farm sell high quality fruit, they also staff orchard educators throughout the farm so visitors can ask questions, and there’s a lot of emphasis keeping the orchard emaculate using walnut shells to line the roads and keep dust down.

Chinchiolo’s roots in traditional farming run deep.

The family started working in grapes and expanded their operation by sending some members out to California where they would grow and export the product. Legend has been passed down through generations of Chinchiolo farmers that one day an Italian man in a nice suit stepped out of a fancy car and told the patriarch that the Chinchiolos were done in the grape industry.
And so, the Chinchiolos became cherry farmers and at one point were responsible for 25% of cherry production in the U.S.
The controlling share of Chinchiolo Farming Co. was sold but several family members retain some of the business and kept part of the Linden land, James’ immediate family being one of them.
“We’re moving our operation more and more to direct to consumer,” James shares. However, the farm also sells their cherries to Nugget Markets
and their honey to Wine & Roses.
As to why James decided to open his plot of Chinchiolo to the public, he says the farm is too beautiful to keep to himself, and he wants to build connections between people and their food. “I for one have observed a lot of people that have become pretty disconnected with agriculture and what it takes to get their food onto their plate,” he says. Children especially he observes, aren’t having the experiences to learn even the basics.
The farm also seems to bring peace. When people are at the farm, James says they seem present, content, and peaceful. It’s exactly what he hopes to bring to the community year round.

Beautiful Bounty of Berries
WE COULDN’T CHOOSE, SO WHY SHOULD YOU?
BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
The adage, “April Showers bring May flowers,” doesn’t quite do the month of May justice. While flowers are certainly something to look forward to, there is so much more to get us hyped each spring here in SJ County, with one being spring’s bounty of fresh berries bursting onto the market scene. From sweet and ripe strawberries to the small but mighty blueberry and all the way to our reigning queen of crops cherries, one thing is certain; we can’t get enough of berry season. So, instead of making the other berries feel like we’ve chosen a favorite child, here at SJ Mag, we thought we’d share some of our favorite recipes utilizing an assortment of berries. Grab them at your local farmer’s market, at your neighborhood farm stand, or even your grocer.
HERBED CHERRY CHICKEN

6 chicken thighs
1 tbsp. kosher salt

Place butter in a heavy 10-inch skillet or cast-iron skillet. Once butter is melted, pour batter into pan, and return to the oven for 20 minutes until the pancake is puffy and golden. Warm Weather Wines
5 LOCAL VINOS TO REACH FOR WHEN TEMPS START TO CLIMB
BY NORA HESTON TARTE VINO
When summer hits, Paul Marsh, the Lodi Wine Visitor Center manager and wine club director, looks for wines with balanced acidity and a lighter body. That doesn’t always mean white wines. “During the summer I’m usually bouncing around between carignan, southern Rhone varietals and tempranillo,” he says. What follows is Marsh’s selection of warm weather wines available at the Visitor’s Center.
2024 TIZONA BY BOKISCH PICPOUL BLANC
This wine was a stand-out from the February wine club and has become a popular reorder for Marsh. He suggests pairing it with oysters and funky cheeses.
2024 LORENZA ROSE
This provincial-style rose is an expert blend of grenache, cinsault and carignan. It’s a popular pick each year, crafted by Melinda Kearney, the winemaker, made from fruit picked off of Turnip Road.
2023 GRADY FAMILY PINOT NOIR
2024 KLINKER BRICK GRENACHE BLANC
This new won is gaining monster ratings for its fun, tropical citrus notes and light, clean feel. “It makes you want to put sandals on and I don’t even wear sandals,” laughs Marsh.
This pinot noir offers balance and light acidity made from fruit grown along the Mokelumne River. It’s achieved an 89 from Wine Enthusiast, a high score for a Lodi pinot noir.
2022 MALEY BROTHERS CARIGNAN
This wine tastes well with a nice chill. Made from fruit grown in the Bishofberger Vineyard, it’s a powerful combination of earth and fruit.
