AMANDA BRICKER FIRST VISITED UOP AS A PATIENT, TODAY SHE’S A STUDENT ATHLETE
BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D BY CARISSA DUGONI
When Amanda Bricker was 18 months old, she received cochlear implants. Born deaf, she was a patient of the Pacific Speech, Hearing, and Language Center from a young age. Today, Bricker is a student at UOP, on track to become a Speech Language Pathologist and pursue an advanced degree in audiology in order to help other children born deaf, and their parents.
“I think being deaf and having a disability has given me a lens to see the world differently.”
“I've always cared for others on a deeper level,” Amanda says. “I think
being deaf and having a disability has given me a lens to see the world differently.”
It’s a full circle moment for the young athlete who made the decision to attend University of the Pacific largely based on her interest in playing softball. The infielder and Oakdale native hopes to instill in future patients the same lessons she’s learned throughout her lifetime. She considers herself “living proof that having a disability isn’t the end of the world and you can still achieve
whatever you want to if you put your mind to it.”
Being able to play softball while pursuing her SLP degree and being close to home were all factors that contributed to her desire to attend UOP. She’s also aware of the meaning of returning to a place she spent important moments as a child becoming a student in the same place she was once a patient.
“I truly believe God has led me to Pacific. Knowing what I want to make of myself, Pacific is the best place for me to start,” she says. “Coming back to the place I was once a patient, to now becoming a student and working under a professor who used to observe my clinicals, gives me goosebumps. I wouldn't have it any other way.”
That graduate student is associate professor and chair of Speech-Language Pathology Derek Isetti. When Amanda was a child, he was involved in her clinical treatments and today Amanda is a student in his college of expertise.
While becoming a champion for other families in the deaf community is a huge passion of Amanda, it is not her only calling. Amanda says she started playing softball simply because she loved it. “I wouldn't necessarily say being deaf has affected softball or extracurriculars drastically,” Amanda says. She admits to adjusting here and there and asking for small accommodations to improve her ability to communicate with her team, but most people don’t even notice she is deaf upon first meeting. It’s usually only after Amanda asks someone to face her when they speak so that she can read their lips that they learn about her disability.
Using physical gestures during games and practices and being sure to have conversations face to face are the majority of what those small accommodations look like.
While becoming an SLP was always the goal, Amanda has set her sights even higher. After learning more about the career path, she wants to get a second degree in audiology so she can better help families with disabilities both similar and different to hers.
“I have decided to further my education and pursue an AuD that way I would have a direct line to the deaf community and be an advocate for my patients and their families,” she says.
StocktonCon is Back!
THE SUMMER SERIES RETURNS JULY 12-13
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
The lineup for StocktonCon’s summer 2025 event has been unveiled, and the guest list is stacked with superhero stars, entertaining villains, and some nostalgic voice actors. The two-day festival taking over Adventist Health Arena is a pop culture convention like no other. Taking note from ComicCon, held annually in San Diego, this accessible event features comics, games, action figures, Funko Pops, toys, video games, collectible cards, anime, manga, and more. The categories span several genres from video and card games to movies, television shows, and pro-wrestling for an expanded experience that caters to a slew of interests.
The variety of attractions means there’s a little something for everyone at this year’s event, including a lineup of impressive special guests.
Cartoon lovers can enjoy meeting American voice actor Rob Paulsen, who knows a thing or two about nostalgia. He’s voiced more than 250 iconic characters including two ninja turtles, multiple characters from “Animaniacs” and “Pinky
and the Brain,” and P.J. from “Goof Troop.” He’s also been in over 1000 commercials and has credits in favorite television shows spanning generations, from “Dexter’s Laboratory” to “Ben 10” to “Doc McStuffins.”
Maurice LaMarche will also be in attendance. He got his start in stand-up comedy where he performed alongside some of the greats, including Rodney Dangerfield, Howie Mandel, and Jim Carrey.
In the 1980s he started his career as a voice actor and has credits in popular series including “Inspector Gadget” and “The Real Ghostbusters.” His longest running role is the voice of Toucan Sam, which he’s been doing since 1987.
Melissa Fahn counts Lilo in “Lilo & Stitch,” Betty Boop, and Hello Kitty amongst her expensive list of cartoon credits, lending voices to some of the most iconic female characters of yesterday and today.
Actors from the 1980s such as Lou Diamond Phillips will share space with today’s big names including JD Pardo from
“M.C. Mayans,” Stefan Kapicic from “Deadpool vs. Wolverine,” and Emilio Rivera from “Sons of Anarchy” fame. Wrestling fans will get the chance to get up close and personal with Nic Nemeth, Booker T, and Al Snow. The event Instagram page (@ stocktoncon) is constantly updating with new confirmed guests and other details. Purchase your tickets to attend on the website, StocktonCon.com/ summer-tickets.
OLGA’S Haven
OLGA RODRIQUEZ HAS SERVED HAVEN OF PEACE FOR MORE THAN A DECADE
Olga Rodriguez stepped into her role as executive director of Haven for Peace a decade ago, but what she inherited was a far cry from how the San Joaquin County women and children’s shelter operates today.
There were holes in the floors, a leaky roof, and bed bugs, according to Olga. “Everything was old,” she laughs. And giving tours of the property was an embarrassment. Fast forward ten years and the Haven is nearly unrecognizable. “Everything that you see today I prayed for,” Olga says. And she mentions the support of local churches and businesses were integral to the Haven’s unofficial rebrand.
“I realized after three years that God has a sense of humor,” Olga shares. The lord wanted her to remodel his house because she loves to decorate.
While creating a space that feels comfortable is extremely important for
BY NORA HESTON TARTE / D BY SOPHIA ELLE
women and children who find themselves at the Haven, comfort is only one piece of what the organization offers. At its core, the Haven is a safe space for women who don’t have anywhere else to turn and maybe have experienced domestic violence. In addition to protection, they receive an education on how to overcome their current circumstance and find hope.
Olga works tirelessly to provide residents with the information they need to change their lives. The Haven provides connection to community resources for job searches, social workers, and housing assistance. Pardon the cliché, but they are essentially teaching women how to fish instead of simply giving them the meal.
In addition to community support, there are also bible studies that bring the word of God to the Haven. These extracurriculars are always optional and not everyone participates, but for some, finding religion is an important part of their growth.
Olga originally hails from Central America but grew up here with parents that took her and her siblings to church starting at a young age. “We learned how to go out and work and serve others in need,” she says. “I have to give credit to my parents… teaching us [to care for others] at an early age.”
The Haven operates differently that other shelters because residents are not forced to leave each day and pack their bags. The Haven can support longer, ongoing stays.

CLASSIC DESIGN INTERIORS
HELPS WITH TRANSFORMATION, FUNCTIONALITY, AND STYLE
BY REBEKAH MOAN
How do you know when it’s time to do a kitchen or bathroom makeover? When items start breaking or showing wear, according to Tiffany Gomes, president and CEO of Classic Design Interiors. “Additionally, when design no longer functions for the current intended use, such as aging in place, additional family members, working from a home office, etc., a professional design company should be called in to update.”
Tiffany suggests creating a portfolio of photos highlighting your specific taste. Pinterest is great for this. “It’s also critical that you develop a budget for your project,” she says. “Sharing both your photos and budget with your designer greatly enhances the likelihood of the project hitting all of your goals.”
Too often, homeowners will hire a contractor based simply on low price, only to find they’ve wasted their time and money on a project that doesn’t meet their expectations. That’s why communication and creating a portfolio are critical.
In terms of the latest home makeover trends, grays are on the way out while gold and brass metals paired with earthtones and rich woodlooks are in. Classic Design Interiors recently finished a 7,000 sq. ft. new construction custom home in Monterey where it provided and installed flooring, tile, and solid surface slabs.
“The beautifully appointed twostory home in the Monterra community of Monterey is a breathtaking example of the warm pallets of nature combined to create harmonious design,” she says. “Featuring generous use of natural stone, hardwood floors, stair rails, and beams, and the magnificence of bookmatched stone slabs on the fireplace and in the bathroom, it showcases the splendor of nature and the true craftsmanship of the installation team.”
Classic Design Interiors is a family-
run business operating in the same Lodi location since 2006. “After 20 years in the home improvement industry, I saw the need for a store that offers not only beautiful and affordable products but also the amazing service you just don't find with the big box stores,” Tiffany says.
The company features a 6,000 sq. ft. showroom with numerous bathroom and kitchen vignettes. It also has onsite professional designers, licensed installation for all interior products, and full-time administration and warehouse staff.

Building Spirits
SHANNON ROCK PARTNERS WITH SJCOE TO SHOWCASE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
BY NORA HESTON
TARTE / PHOTOS SHANNON ROCK OF PRESERVE STUDIO
Shannon Rock unveiled her “Redefining Beauty” campaign on the pages of San Joaquin Magazine in 2021. It was a personal project she turned into a coffee table book and a few of her subjects were chosen for a spread of the same name in our January 2021 issue.
In the four years that have followed, Shannon’s efforts of redefining beauty have only grown. Discovered through her original campaign, she is now working with the San Joaquin County Office of Education to redefine beauty and build spirits for students with disabilities.
REDEFINING DISABILITIES
Shannon has completed two photo shoots with qualifying students. The first was in place of traditional graduation photos. Parents completed questionnaires and Shannon used the information to curate experiences specific to each student’s interests. This included a faux underwater scene for a “Spongebob Squarepants” fan and a complete candy store for a sweets aficionado.
“They truly received an immersive experience from Shannon. Everything from music and snacks to the colors and lighting used was tailored for each student,” shares Jen Pool, the executive assistant to Annie Cunial at SJCOE. “Watching each student smile, feel celebrated, and engage to take photos on their unique sets left a mark on each one of us.”
This year, a different approach was taken as Shannon photographed eighth grade girls promoting into high school. This time, Shannon and SJCOE partnered with West 12 Ranch and used horses in the photos.
“Watching our students come alive, smile, laugh, and lead these horses is like nothing I have ever seen before,” says Jen. “One parent watched their student light up around a horse this year and now plans to look into enrolling her in lessons. And many others were moved to tears when they saw the toss of a graduation cap and the joy of each student being surrounded by their favorite things. It is rare to get to see our
students shine like this.”
One participant, Ava, thrived on set. Her mother, Maria, was originally wary of her daughter’s participation in the shoot because Ava doesn’t particularly like to have her photo taken.
“Shannon and her team were incredibly engaging, and surprisingly, Ava felt comfortable and willing to try different poses,” Maria shares. “Ava even got to interact with the horses, which to my surprise, she absolutely loved.”
Another student, Madeline, participated in a wheelchair, and Jen hopes her images show the world that “you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
“These are students, children, just like mine and yours, who deserve love, equal opportunities, and to be seen for their strengths, and not just perceived weaknesses,” says Jen.
According to Shannon, the entire team welled up watching these horses communicate with students who are largely nonverbal. “One horse licked this little girl’s face and she was hugging his face and kissing it,” Shannon recounts. Barbara Butterworth, the owner of West 12, admitted she’d never seen anything like it before, despite a life dedicated to working with horses.
“I feel like the most important thing in our world… is to feel valid and seen,” Shannon says. “It started with my original project that way, it’s kept on as I’ve done things adjacent to it.”
“DURING THIS SHOOT, PARENTS WERE IN TEARS AND SHARED HOW GRATEFUL THEY WERE THAT SOMEONE TOOK THE TIME TO SEE THEIR STUDENTS AS THEY DO,” – JEN POOL
REDEFINING WORK
Shannon’s experience with Redefining Beauty and connected projects has helped her redefine the entirety of her business. Always known for going above and beyond with clients, every photoshoot now includes an even more personal touch.
“Because that’s what fills me,” she explains. “And it fills me to make sure someone else walks away feeling seen.”
While the most important part of the project was to establish a sense of worth in children that face daily difficulties, building their confidence by making them feel important just for being who they are, the larger mission is a love letter to the community at large that challenges the norms of what is beautiful.
“Our students are going to show our community just how capable they are, and I am confident they will shatter some preexisting expectations,” Jen shares.
REDEFINING ART EDUCATION
While Shannon is a photographer by trade, her work with the school district has many layers. She has served on the Board of Education where she spoke openly about the lack of art education in schools and how the arts are not treated as a viable career option within the county school system. In addition to the photo projects she has designed, Shannon has also taught photography classes within the district, helped the district establish a five-year plan for implementing more arts into the curriculum, and presented her ideas as a keynote speaker on an international stage.
She continues to expand the Redefining Beauty brand with individual photo shoots and larger projects that fall under the same umbrella.
REDEFINING THE WORLD
\“The SJCOE’s mission is to educate, innovate, and inspire,” says Jen. “We believe in the power of understanding every student’s unique story. It is our hope that by highlighting our students, we will help educate the community about what it means to be a student with a different ability.”
The photoshoots, in Jen’s eyes, not only champion students’ individuality but also serves a larger purpose, sending a message of inclusivity and individuality.
“By showing students in special education in a way that they have never seen before, I believe we are shattering boundaries and showing that they are capable, beautiful, and each brilliant in their own way,” Jen says. “These photos are pieces of art, focused centrally on each amazing student. They show them in their element, doing and trying new things. They show other students with disabilities that they CAN. Because they can.” Find out more at www.preservestudio.com

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
YOU’VE GOT QUESTIONS. WE’VE GOT ANSWERS.
HOW DOES SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE PICK THE BEST OF WINNERS?
From February to April 30 we collected our readers’ votes for more than 500 Best Of categories ranging from food to services, shopping to weddings. More than 4,000 local residents shared their knowledge of our community to help us come up with a list of the best of the best. Whoever got the most votes is highlighted in the category, with up to four winners per list (in case of a tie).
DO ADVERTISERS AUTOMATICALLY WIN?
Nope! Let's put this rumor to rest. A simple look through our pages proves this isn't true. We love our advertisers, but the Best Of list showcases the hot spots our readers chose as favorites—not the places our staff picks. And we can guarantee no special treatment is given to our advertisers in these sections. The only way to earn a spot on our best of list is to be the best, get the word out, and get the votes—you can’t buy your way in.

Best Fine Dining
Pietro’s Trattoria, a farm-to-fork Italian restaurant that boasts an old world flair, took home three first place awards from our annual Best Of competition this year. Readers voted the family friendly eatery the best San Joaquin County location for appetizers, fine dining, and Italian fare. Enjoy a social evening inside the bustling restaurant or sip languidly on the patio. Whether you’re gorging on arancini, calamari fritti, and burrata toast or ordering mains like chicken piccata and eggplant parmigiana, you’re sure to be impressed. Plus, don’t forget to taste Italian favorites off the extensive wine list that features both local and international sips.
BEST Chef & BEST Specialty Burger
Chef Jeff Stogsdill leads the kitchen at Brookside Country Club. For 15 years he honed his culinary skills in the kitchen of Delta Bistro before taking a position with Brookside. He quickly dedicated his time to perfecting a new menu for members and guests across the properties several food spots—1929 Room, the Terrace, the Terrace Lounge, and the on-site pub. As the Executive Chef, the awardwinning Stogsdill oversees every kitchen on property and what comes out of it.
Amongst his best dishes are his burgers, for which he was recognized in a separate category of Best Of. Chef Jeff won the Best Specialty Burger category for the patties he flips on the Brookside grill both at private events and the on-site restaurants.
Best MEXICAN FOOD
When it comes to San Joaquin County, we know Mexican food! So, it’s no surprise this category gets a lot of love. While there were several spots in the running, the following three edged out the competition: Don Luis Mexican Restaurant, Habanero Hots, and Miguel’s Mexican Dining. Don Luis Mexican Restaurant opened in 1994 and serves authentic Mexican dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The lengthy menu makes it hard to choose
just one plate to order, but the crispy tacos, menudo, and enchiladas dinner all deserve special mention. Habanero Hots, a festive Lodi cantina with an extensive list of home-made margaritas and hot sauces, has been serving locals since 1981. The sizzling fajita platters feel celebratory even on a random Tuesday while the tostadas clock in amongst the most popular fare. Last but not least, Miguel’s has been slanging its Mexican and Tex-Mex plates since 1977. Come in for the gravy and cheese or order a combination of tacos and enchiladas.
Best Pizza
David’s Pizza is so popular they had to expand! Now with two locations in Stockton, David’s—named for its owner—first won the Best Of designation from San Joaquin Magazine in 1993. Some of the components that make this family pizzeria a success are the dedication to sourcing local ingredients, providing a family friendly atmosphere to dine in, and using hand-tossed dough as the start of every pie that comes out of the kitchen. Pizza is sold by the slice or the pie, plus there’s a lot of other menu items worth their weight in dough. Winners: 1 David’s Pizza 2
Michael’s Pizza 3 Guantonios
Best Cake
If you’re looking for the best cake in town, look no further than Nothing Bundt Cakes. Bundt cakes are distinctly shaped desserts that have a fluted or ring patter, and Nothing Bundt Cakes (located in Lincoln Center) has made an entire business out of perfecting these concoctions in different sizes. Choose between traditional round cakes, tiered options, or mini bundtlets and bundtinis. Each is topped with decadent cream cheese icing and comes in a variety of flavors, including a specialty option unveiled each month. 1. Nothing Bundt Cakes 2. M&W Dutch American Bakery 3 Fizz Bakery

DELI
Picking a favorite deli in San Joaquin County is a near impossible task. There are so many great shops that are more than the buildyou-own sandwiches they make. Podesto’s Market & Deli is under new ownership but the brand has a storied history in Stockton offering a full deli experience to guests and championing that local butcher experience. Family owned and operated since 1982; it has a reputation for carrying an expert blend of domestic and imported
foods. Coming in second, Genova Bakery focuses their menu on Old-world Italian meals with made-toorder sandwiches, specialty subs, and breads all served at the adorable red-andgreen corner store. In third place, we have Gian’s Delicatessen
Also an Italian deli, the homemade focaccia is a standout here, and while sandwiches served on the soft, made-from-scratch bread are irresistible, the pasta is just as delicious. The brand offers up daily specials like homemade ravioli with Gian’s signature meat sauce, a pesto penne, spaghetti, and more.

Best WINERY
With more than 85 wineries in the Lodi region, narrowing it down to three bests is a tall order. Luckily our readers were up to the task and the results are in! Our first place winner is Macchia Wines, an Acampo-based, family-owned winery, which translates to “the spot” . in Italian. While the tongue-in-cheek wine names are part of the fun, they are equally as delicious to taste as they are to say. We recommend diving into the best of the region with an Adventurous Zinfandel on the extensive lawn during one of Macchia’s live music events. Up next is Oak Farm Vineyards. The winery has expanded its operations recently to include more food options, which makes dining in with a bottle of award-winning vino all the more pleasant. Much like Macchia, a picnic on the lawn while live music plays is perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy their stand-out wines offered in white, rosé, and red.
Last up is Michael David Winery, and third place is still quite the achievement! Stop in and have decadent French toast for breakfast, order pies from the bakery, or come in for a tasting experience. It’s easy to waste an afternoon at the gorgeous Highway 12 property sipping estate-grown wines and sampling some of the label’s more recognizable labels.

Best Coffee
Terra Coffee stole top prize for Best Coffee this year. The Yosemite Street coffee shop is more than a place to grab a quick drink; it’s a gathering spot for the community. Whether you’ve booked a coffee meeting, need a quick lunch, or plan to spend your evening perusing the artwork and sitting in on open mic night, the high-energy vibe of the chic space makes sense in the village. And while visiting the location is half of the experience, you can purchase the beans to brew at home when you don’t have time to grab a cup on the way.
Best GIFT SHOP
Every once-in-a-while a newbie comes along and blows us all away. Some of our categories experience the same winners year after year, so it’s exciting when a new name graces our entries, even if the business isn’t brand new itself.
The Nested Owl Gifts & Collectibles Shop is a small gift shop in Manteca selling new, used, and handmade items from a variety of vendors. The shelves are lined with adorable trinkets, hand-selected antiques, and one-of-a-kind gifts. And while the inventory is perhaps the shop’s biggest draw, fans are quick to mention the owner’s (Linda Thurman) caring spirit also keeps them coming back.
BEST ART GALLERY
1 The Haggin Museum
If you enjoy the finer things in life, then stop by The Haggin Museum. Part art gallery, part history museum, the Haggin Museum always has something worthy going on. From traveling exhibits to permanent collections representing the region, you can enjoy old favorites as well as new attractions. And there are special events including family craft nights and artists talks open to the community throughout each month.
