Title - A camping shelter

Area - 100 sqm

Site - Hampi

As we were hiking in the landscape we received the news that the entire country is going into lockdown becuase of a deadly virus. We are now stranded there indefinitely! W must now find a place to stay for a longer time. we come across a ruined platform on a low, flat, rocky hill that must have held a building in ancient Vijayanagara. Now all that remain are the plinths. Scattered around are some building elements. I realise that i can make a basic shelter with these elements.

Title - Vertical streets

Area - 100 sqm

Site - Santhome,Chennai

During my site visit, I created a painting that reflects my experience and emotions on the site. The yellow strokes represent the piercing sunlight, while the blue is an existing well filled with water. The green sprinkles represent the excitement I felt while looking into it. The orange portrays the natural surveillance from the streets, and the brown conveys the negative feeling I had from nearby sites. This painting played a significant role in guiding my decision-making process about where to build and where not to, as well as how to orient the building’s circulation and ventilation. I used the ramp to make the building a vertical extension of the street. Overall, this artwork helped me to translate my observations and feelings about the site into a visual representation that could inform my design decisions.

The site is filled with tress in the center For easy acceblity from the primary road i left a setback of 6 m Fasade opensout to main courtyard with existing trees which opensout to the north east road To have a seameless movement of people throughout the building a ramp is used to connect all the levels To make the people welcomed inside the fasade is curved twords inside

Title -Reimagine existing urban neighbourhood

Area - 6000 sqm

Site - Periyamelaguparai,Trichy

After conducting a thorough site analysis and speaking with local residents, I discovered that many people in the surrounding neighborhood work traditional 9-5 jobs, and women in particular are struggling to earn secondary income and express themselves. Additionally, I noted a large, inaccessible 6m-tall rock mound on the site. Given these observations, I proposed that the rock mound could be repurposed as a public realm and women's empowerment center. By constructing a center around it, we could help the women in the neighborhood earn income and express themselves more freely. As I considered this idea, a painting inspired me to imagine the potential of the mound as a focal point for the community. The painting depicts a mother's love, her calmness, and her focus towards the sun. It also shows birds looking up to the sun, emphasizing the power of this celestial body. I realized that the mound could similarly command the attention of the community and provide a source of inspiration and empowerment.

The focal point of the women’s empowerment center is the main building, which faces the mountain. To create an asymmetrical balance on the site, circular learning-based workshops are situated opposite the main building. The hands-on workshops are arranged in a manner that encloses the mountain and directs the flow of people. A gallery located on the surface of the mound allows people to touch and experience the mound beneath the bustling bazaar street. The street serves as a pathway for people to ascend to the top of the mountain using broad and spacious steps, which also double as platforms for street shopping.

The workshops are categorized based on the type of instruction offered: learning-based and hands-on. The learning-based workshop has a circular design inspired by the concept of thinnai palli. On the other hand, the hands-on workshops have a more open floor plan, providing ample space to work freely. These workshops have access to outdoor courtyards, which are ideal for wet and muddy work.

The roof is skillfully designed to blend with the undulating curves of the mound and merge with the surrounding landscape. To support the roof, mushroom columns are utilized.

Documentation of heritage structures

Padithurai - Thanjavur

Subramanian temple - Kunnur

This temple is situated in close proximity to the northern border of Pandinadu. The vimana measures 15ft. 3.in. in width and features a Padabanda adhisthana. The wall is embellished with Brahmakantha pilasters, displaying archaic decorations. To the south, a false devakostha is adorned with an image of Dakshinamurti. A bhutamala with bhutas that have an archaic appearance is visible beneath the kapota, while the nasis are typical of the Pandya style, with broad A mukhapattis and narrow circular gadhas. The kantahi and prati above the kapota bear vyala figures in profile, as seen at Vijayanarayanam (Pemmal Temple) and Korkai. The griva, sikhara, and stupi are circular in shape.

Beneath the soffit of the sikhara, a bhutamala is visible. The grivakosthas contains devathas, some of which are old but have a nondescript character. As the temple is sacred to Siva’s son Subrahmanya, who is sometimes associated with elephants, elephant figures have been placed on the corners instead of the customary vrsa or bhuta figures of a Siva temple.

Although a donatory inscription from the time of Cola Aditya I exists, with the dated portion covered up by a later mandapa, the temple is older and built in the Pandya style. It was likely constructed before A.D. 880 when Aditya’s rule had spread over Konadu and the adjacent areas of Pandia nadu. The nasi and stupi forms are not Cola but rather Pandya, and the absence of pillars in the ardhamandapa is another Pandya feature. Additionally, the temple’s location within traditional Pandya territory suggests Pandya patronage.

Wood Joinery

Hands on workshop

Furniture Prototyping Using Advanced Wooden Joinery

The craft of wood joinery is a renowned technique that has sustained structures for generations by relying solely on tension and friction, well before the advent of screws and metal fastenings. Through this experiential workshop, I acquired fundamental knowledge about wood and joinery skills. As a prospective designer, I was challenged to comprehend the various attributes of wooden joints, including strength, flexibility, durability, and aesthetic appeal. I formulated my own design to be executed by the end of the workshop, utilizing my newfound knowledge of wood joinery techniques, calculations, and geometric measurements.

Contour workshop

Hands on workshop

We reconstructed a contour model to gain insight into the different elevations in a terrain, ranging from mountain peaks to valleys and rivers. The model was constructed using thermocol as the central mass, with multiple layers of plaster of paris coating. The thermocol was sliced according to previously generated contour drawings and assembled in corresponding shapes, forming a stack. Utilizing a red ribbon, we attempted to delineate a potential roadway based on the contours. This workshop enhanced my comprehension of approaching contour-based sites and informed me about their pros and cons.

Clothcrete

Hands on workshop

During the two-day workshop at the Zonal NASA Convention in Vagamon, Kerala, we were introduced to a new material and construction technique called clothcrete. We gained an understanding of the advantages and flexibility of this material, as well as its applications, such as small structures like plant pots and pavilions. Using cement, bamboo fiber cloth, plastic rope, and color pigments, we built a pavilion that took about a day and a half to complete.
