Ms. Sarah Grover a “Books for Nepal, which is Rooms to Read now” returning volunteer captured attention of all with her moving slide show of her recent trip.

Following that was a delicious food served right. This was followed by a sensational Cultural Program dance and so on… What a day fun, work, and friendship for all!.

E ditorial With great pleasure we present this special issue of Sanskritik Sangalo in Nepali as well as English. We also welcome you to NCNC, Inc (Nepal Center of North Carolina) community. Sanskriti Sangalo is NCNC’s annual newsletter.

We had wonderful responses from all of you on previous years’ issues of this Newsletter. In view of our growing population here, we have added Nepali section in our newsletter. We hope all of our members will enjoy this and we also hope that we will see more news and articles in coming years.

3. Special Events: On May 22nd, 2005, we were pleased to present very popular Neplali drama Malati Mangale, in Morrisville, NC. This gave us an opportunity to work with various organizations in the Triangle. This was a thundering success for all of us Nepalis and our American friends. NC is now in the history books as the State where the first showing EVER of Malati Mangale (or Nepali Musical Play) took place.

This pioneering philosophy is very consistent with our Motto of First in Height, First in flight and now first in Malati Mangale. NCNC is a 501 c(3) registered non-profit organization. NCNC has various activities throughout the year that are of interest to Nepali and our American friends in NC. Newsletter is just one of the regular activities of NCNC. Other activities are typically as follows: 1. Fund raising for victims of Natural Disaster. NCNC raised more than $1700.00 for TSUNAMI victims.

NCNC also raised $260 for a economically distressed blood marrow transplant Nepali patient in Washington, D.C. 2. New Year Convention: A huge oneday convention was organized during New Year 2062, in NC State University in cooperation with Everest Club. In the morning we screened famous movie “Himalaya” in the University Theater , see more information in this Newsletter.

Narayan Rajbhandari, NC was highly welcome by all. Mrs. Annapurna Deo, NC updated all the activities of "Nepali Woman's Global Network (NWGN).

4. Participation in Nepali Conventions: NCNC had very memorable participation at 2005 Joint Convention of Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA) and Nepalese Association in Midwest America (ANMA) during Labor Day Weekend, 2005,inAtlanta,GA.

Another highlight of the program was concern of former President Jimmy Carter about the recent political development of Nepal, the message was read by Mr. Brian McQuinn, from Carter Center, Atlanta.

Our presence was in Basketball Tournament, Homeless Feeding Program, Human Rights Issues Discussion in Nepal, Eastern Philosophy and Religion Program, Poetry Competition/Literary Session, Women's forum, Antykshari, Deepak Bajracharya's concert and DJ Dance Party, and Cultural Program.

The program "Community Services and Immigration Issues Forum " presented by Singor Rana and Priyanka was very informative and lots of Nepali from NC, participated in questions and answer program.

Miss. Masum Dhakal, Mr. Madhav Dhakal, Mrs. Shanti Rajlawt all from NC, participated in Cultural Program.

All in all, NCNC had meaningful participation in the joint convention.

We are pleased to report that our NCNC Life member Dr. Narayan Rajbjhandari was elected president of the NASeA for the new term.

Congratulations to him Fellow friends from NCNC won the first (Nagendra Neupane, Shari Gharo Bhayo), second (Sailendra Devkota, Ma hansi Raheko Thiye) and third prize (Madhukar Devkota, Malai merai shanty priya desh pharkai deo) in Poetry Competition. Bal Kabi Saurya Neupane, and only female participant Bhagabati Neupane also recited poems and received warm applause.

5.Celebration of Dasain: Special thanks to all who participated in our Dashin Festival this year. We had 132 adults and 30 children present at Dashin Party. Also thanks to all who made this event a successful one. Many thanks to following individuals who provided rides to our bahiniharu at Salem College to come and attend Dasain function in Raleigh: Mr. Steven Berkowitz, Ishwar Devkota, Nagendra Neupane to go get them and Mr. Madhukar Devkota, Yagya Acharya, Shiva Mishra, Roshan Shrestha to go drop them in Winston-Salem. Children’s Game in Burlington: Srijana Guilford

We had MOMO, achar, rice, and chicken.

We made $800 profit from food stall. We only made $25.00 profit from International Bazaar. But overall it was wonderful opportunity for us to work together. Lots of our NCNC friends had fun, native food and enjoyed International Festival. Our heartfelt thanks to following individuals who made International Festival a grad success. This year Pragya Luintel and I, Srijana Guilford, organized an hour of children's games for some outdoor fun. Each game had prizes that included nerf football rockets, whistles, wind whirlers and more. It was a great time for kids to get together and participate in some directed activities that were made especially for them.

The games got under way with a water relay for ages 6 - 13. Two teams of 6 lined up behind their own bucket of water with a ladle. Each child had to take a ladle of water as fast as they could to another bucket a few yards away. The team to fill the second bucket the fastest won.

Of course we had a few fun spills and splashes!

The second game we played was a lollipop pull that was for all ages. Each child dipped their hands in a bag of lollipops and pulled out one to keep. A fun twist to the game was that if the lollipop they pulled out had a special marking on it, they also got a prize!

After 30 minutes of playing, we had to take a break because the children were off playing with their prizes. But they soon returned asking if we had more games....and we did! Next the children sat in a circle, listened to some top 40 hits and played 2 games of hot potato. Each stop in the game either revealed a prize or an elimination. Then we played a round of BahiraBhitra. The children walked around a circle of rope and had to jump in the circle when Pragya called out bhitra, and jump out of the circle when she called bahida. If a child did the wrong thing, they were eliminated. This game was

very popular and also attracted the adults. We played a second round to include them which brought the number of players to 20 people!

Pragya and I enjoyed planning these games and we hope we can provide some more fun at the next event. We also enjoyed meeting the children and hope that they will continue to participate in NCNC festivities.

The Nepal Center of North Carolina is an organization that includes North Carolinians of Nepali origin, as well as people interested in Nepali cultural development. We attempt to bring about positive change, and to help build responsible citizenship through educational and cultural means, but primarily - we are about friendship. As our traditional culture begins to interweave with contemporary American culture, we recognize the necessity to preserve parts of our Nepali culture and cultural values in a meaningful way.

Senior Nepalis in Birthday Celebration:

Our annual activities include but are not limited to the following.

1) Hosting two semi-Annual Conventions (one logistic and the other cultural) normally attended by about 200 people.

2) Participation in festivals such as Raleigh International Festival, where we present a Nepali cultural booth and program.

3) Donate money for relief works and charities.

4) Creating new, and continuing current, partnerships with area institutions (such as universities) by providing information about Nepal.

5) Helping non-Nepalese going to Nepal by orientation, information and guidance.

6) Helping Nepalese move into North Carolina.

7) Publishing an annual newsletter with extensive educational information.

8) Greet and host dignitaries related to Nepal visiting North Carolina.

9) Maintaining an active relationship with other Nepalese Associations in North America.

10) Organizing Nepalese cultural programs.

11) Administering Nepali learning classes.

12) Teaching of English as second language is available upon request.

Well, I can pick many. Since you asked me to pick one I might mention 2001-Joint Labor Day Convention hosted by NCNC here in Raleigh for two days. As you know there were more than 500 attendees both Nepali and Americans from all over the County including Nepalese Ambassdor to the US. Activities included Nepali Poetry Competition, Concert by senior singer form Nepal Mr. Deep Shrestha, Development Forums relating to Nepal moderated by distinguished Nepali like Dr. Uttam Lal Shrestha, Women’s Forum, Youth Forum where our Youths discussed issues relating to growing in America, Volunteerism activities exemplified by Blood Donation during the Convention, Homeless Feeding, Sports for youths (Indoor Soccer tournament), ever captivating Cultural Program with huge attendance, and more, and and all inside one roof for two days were most demonstrating moments that captured all sentiments of NCNC’s purpose. As founding President, could you please highlight the purpose of NCNC? As its name stands, it is a center for our own Nepali brothers and sisters and our American friends to meet and build a bond of friendship, develop better citizenship through exchange of ideas and knowledge while maintaining our original roots which is imbedded deep inside our hearts. Each one of us who came here have a desire to do something meaningful to the homeland we left behind. And others who have their yet another generation here also want to see that their children continue the 13

How do you evaluate your last term as President?

Well this is for our members to evaluate and not me.

You are modest, could you please then describe other NCNC activities than the Labor Day convention?

Well, each year we do three major functions, In April we celebrate New Year through a convention like manner, and in October we meet for Dasain in a celebratory manner, and in November, we participate in International Festival in Raleigh and represent Nepal. In addition, we continuously raise funds for charity, and this term we raised approximately $4500 for needy patients, Tsunami victims, and other organizations. I might mention that we were also able to bring the Nepali Drama “Malati Mangale”from Royal Nepal Academy in Raleigh as a special event this year.

How do you think this money will be raised?

We have provided lots of great activities this past year which you have outlined in your editorial. I hope we have established enough credibility form this and our past activities as I outlined some and that our friends, and members, and others now will help us generate $15,000 for this coming year. Which will be a big back-bone for NCNC. How do you plan to help on projects in Nepal in this manner?

Did you forget Newsletter ?

Please understand this is basic requirement for NCNC’s annual function. Any other events and/or projects have to initiated in case by case basis which complement NCNC’s objectives.

No, Newsletter is very important for us and it provides people to be involved in a different way and also keeps us informed. By the way, I like to commend the time you have spent on it and excellent publication you are planning.

Can you explain?

What are your thought for NCNC’s future ?

For example, you yourself want to fund salary of one teacher for ever through a fund created by you in the village school you attended as child. NCNC can help you raise more funds in this case. I have known many other friends have similar ideas either in cooperation with NCNC or completely on their own.

We will always continue to motivate our folks to get involved in NCNC activities and do what they can do for NCNC. For NCNC in particular and Nepali community in general we need to develop good leadership.

How are NCNC activities funded, What is NCNC’s financial status?

Do you have any concept project yourself?

NCNC’s activities are funded through the dues collected from Members. We ideally,

I am not sure if they are only concept, but I do have two project desires that I like to see 14

happen. First I like to build as an Engineer myself a self-sustaining distilled water tap in “Khamari” in Gorkha district or similar location. Next I like to get a “educationextension” program started through a library in Gorkha district. Basically, every month library will draw teachers from the district in rotating basis and update them in current skills. Please understand that this situations can be repeated all over Nepal and I want to be personally involved on these two so that they are copied in other places as well. I hope to be able to work in cooperation with organizations likes NCNC, “Rooms to Read” and others.

It tells the story of a young couple Malati and Mangale, who are bonded slaves and suffer in the hands of their buyers. The event takes place in the year between 1770 A.D. and 1775 A.D. At the time when it was a common practice in Nepal to buy slaves for the services.

The play opens with Malati and Mangale scattering seeds in the vegetable garden. They both were in their prime of their youth and are deeply in love. Gosain, owner of the couple was attracted by the beauty of Malati and wants to make her his kept. The owner was also suspicious of his wife; he thought that she might be attracted by handsome Mangale.

So he decided to sell Mangale. And one day Mangale gets sold separating the two in immense love. Malati cries her heart out and laments that they will never see each other again. Mangale hands over a flower to Malati and says that as long as this flower does not wither, no harm will come to them.
