Suzuki String Academy
Engaging families in the gift of music
What started in Sandpoint in the spring of 2019 as a small, two-room studio with just eight students, Suzuki String Academy has blossomed into an immense blessing for families enthusiastic about music, particularly the Suzuki Method.
Founders of Sandpoint’s Suzuki String Academy, Ruth Klinginsmith, who has lived in Sandpoint for 17 years, and Marianne Wall, who moved here in 2012, share that they are honored to witness families in the community embrace the Suzuki Philosophy.
“Seeing the powerful transformation and positive impact in their lives has made our
dream come true,” said Klinginsmith.
In just four years, the Suzuki String Academy has quickly expanded and moved into its own building and is now serving over 65 families.
For those unfamiliar with the Suzuki method, it is an international method used by trained Suzuki teachers worldwide.
“The Suzuki method is referred to as the Mother Tongue method and is learned just as a child would learn his or her language; first by listening, then by imitation and repetition,” explains Wall. “At Suzuki String Academy, music theory and note reading
all begin in the first lesson through fun games and engaging activities. When the child is developmentally ready, note reading from a page is introduced.”
Unlike many different music programs, the Suzuki Method specializes in early childhood music education that actively involves the family.
“We begin students on an instrument as early as three years old. All parents attend their child’s lessons and learn the instrument along with their child at the beginning so they can practice at home with their child,” said Klinginsmith. “All students participate in private lessons and a group class every week. The group classes foster mentorship and camaraderie among the students.”
However, Suzuki String Academy is not limited to young students, their current enrollment ranges from ages 3 to 73.
“We believe that you are rarely too young and never too old to begin your musical journey,” said Wall, adding that their goal is not only to cultivate life skills and character through music but also to provide their students with a lifelong companion in their instrument and music.
Enrollment is now open. Please visit SuzukiStringAcademy.com for more information.
The public is invited to attend two free string concerts put on by the students of Suzuki String Academy; the first on Friday, October 27 at 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church and Friday, December 8 at 6 p.m. at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Tapping Into Calm
How EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Can Help Alleviate Anxiety
In the quest for effective anxiety management, many are turning to a technique known as Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, colloquially referred to as "tapping." EFT is gaining popularity for its remarkable ability to alleviate anxiety and stress.
At its core, EFT combines elements of traditional Chinese medicine, psychology, and acupressure. It involves gently tapping specific meridian points on the body while focusing on the source of anxiety or stress. This practice aims to release blocked energy and reduce negative emotions.
One of the key benefits of EFT is its accessibility. You can perform it virtually anywhere, at any time, making it an excellent tool for managing anxiety on the go. It's non-invasive, involves no medication, and carries no side effects.
EFT has been shown to reduce the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in the body. Regular practice can lead to a significant decrease in anxiety symptoms, such as racing thoughts and restlessness. It offers a sense of control over one's emotional state, empowering individuals to tackle anxiety head-on.
Additionally, EFT is versatile and can be tailored to address specific anxiety triggers, such as public speaking or social interactions. By tapping into the power of EFT, individuals gain a valuable tool for achieving emotional balance and finding relief from the burdens of anxiety.
In a world where anxiety is increasingly prevalent, EFT stands as an accessible and effective technique to help individuals regain control over their mental wellbeing and find moments of calm amidst the chaos of daily life.

The Passing of the Torch
After serving our community for 37 years in various roles at Bonner General Health, CEO Sheryl Rickard will retire in December. It was a decision Rickard said was very difficult.
“To be honest, deciding to retire was one of the hardest decisions that I have made. I love my job and the people that I get the pleasure of working with every day,” said Rickard. “I truly believe that we have the best hospital. The talent and skill of our healthcare team is remarkable, and I am so proud to be a part of that.”
Rickard first began her work at Bonner General in 1986 as the Accounting Supervisor, a position she held for two years. She was then promoted to Chief Financial Officer and served in that role from 1988 until 2004 when she was promoted to Chief Executive Officer, a position she has held for 19 years.
Looking back on her tenure, there are many accomplishments that Rickard can be proud of.
“In 2007, we revived the Bonner General Health Foundation, which is one of the best things we could have done,” reflected Rickard. “The Foundation Board has always been an amazing group of people who give so much of their time and energy for the hospital, our staff, and our community. They have raised an amazing amount of money through the years which allowed us to purchase equipment and/or start or improve services that we provide to our community. Their support and guidance have been phenomenal.”
Rickard also said that becoming a Critical Access Hospital, which took place in 2010, was something that has had a huge impact on the healthcare in our community.
"It increased our cash flow without negative consequences. This change in Medicare status allowed us to upgrade our facilities, improve

services, and keep up with changing technology,” said Rickard.
In 2015 the Health Services Building was opened, allowing Bonner General Health to increase its footprint and combine services. “It also allowed us to have a different, more modern look and demonstrated our commitment to staying in the community," said Rickard. "Recognizing Jack Parker (the longtime President of the Board who passed away in September) by naming the sky bridge after him was a highlight."
As difficult as it was to decide to retire, Rickard is thrilled to pass the torch to current CFO, John Hennessey.
“John is intelligent, kind, and funny,” said Rickard. “He has the unique ability to balance the needs of the hospital and community with the financial stability of the hospital, which is not always easy.”
Hennessey has been with Bonner General Health for a total of seven years.
“He was our CFO for five years and then went to a much larger hospital on the east coast for two years and decided to return to BGH,” said Rickard of her successor. “I love that part because he was able to have that experience but chose to return. John is well-liked by all who meet him. He is highly respected by the entire healthcare team. He is a proven leader and will be a great CEO.”
As for Rickard, her life is not about to slow down. With a new granddaughter who lives locally with Sheryl’s youngest daughter and her husband and her two other children getting married this summer, she looks forward to spending more time with friends and family, traveling with her husband, and of course the possibility of even more grandchildren.
“I will be busy in a whole new way,” said Rickard.

Wild Edges
Each person has physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual edges. Whether we choose to come close to an edge and begin to understand it or consistently run away from it is unique to each of us. If we want to grow in soul, we need to confront our edges. Most of the time, we discover that an edge is simply unknown territory. If

Grrraarrr went my stomach, which made my eyes pop open further and realize it was time to tend to the inner dragon. My stomach was simply hungry, as I participated in a fasting ceremony, and it had only been a day and a half since it started. The hunger made me turn inward even more to listen to what my physical being needed to stay present and available to the ceremony I was a part of.
I came to dance, pray, and find my spiritual edge within a sacred container, and the fasting option now ended for me. I hadn’t prepared my body to fast and I didn’t feel like dealing with the mental struggle that reared its ugly head around whether or not to eat. My friend, Yvette, and I traveled to England to participate in the Summer Long Dance—a six-day ceremony led by the Movement Medicine community and founders Ya’Akov and Susannah Darling Khan. We slept four hours a night, danced for hours and hours, consumed small amounts of nourishment or fasted, and went through the movement journey of Movement Medicine’s 21 Gratitudes.
which creates just enough stress to keep me alert and aware.
So many health practitioners including myself talk about chronic stress levels being dangerous in a variety of ways. I think it is time to remind ourselves that acute stress in a safe environment can push us into an optimal level of cognitive and behavioral performance. I sensed that it was time to be in a sacred space that stimulated a stress response without fear, so I could explore deeper parts of myself that get lost within daily responsibilities.
we go outside to a cliff edge, we instantly feel the updraft of wind that may stir and activate our adrenaline to pulse through our veins. We peer over the ledge, seeing the danger with our eyes and feeling the need to flee. It is not too different when confronting a spiritual edge or an emotional edge.
“What a blessing to dance with any issue that arises. Staying active in the discovery,” is what I wrote in my journal at the beginning of the ceremony. My intention was dancing for clarity and a deeper connection to Source, so I could share it with others. I am never short of creative ideas or entrepreneurial visions that may support my business. The struggle takes place when I am not clear about which to pursue and nurture. Over time, I witnessed my energy being diluted as I followed too many ideas at once. I craved a deeper connection to my inner potency and wanted to strip all of my normal comforts,
This story shares insights into an experience where I chose to discover a spiritual edge. Each edge that shows up in our lives holds a story of potential growth, resilience, and power. Each edge helps to amplify our aliveness as we progress along our evolutionary path. What amazes me is that it will be different for each of us. We can celebrate each bridge we create, each balancing act we learn from, and each edge that teaches us to rise.
Our mission is to provide a variety of classes and events that encourage full body and mind wellness.

Relax • Renew • Revive
By Tara Rapoport Celebrity Trainer + Movement Specialist Natural Fitness & WE Yoga
Every new season brings change. Which season are you currently in? Are you thriving, harvesting and loving life? Going through a more challenging period of growth? Coming out of the growth and settling in, getting grounded? Physical change so? Hormonal changes? Whatever season you’re in, it’s best to do life the way that works best for you and that keeps you feeling healthy both inside and out.
How do you reconnect to yourself? How do you renew your sense of purpose?
Here are a few of the things that I am taking time for with the change of season:
Relax
I’m slowing down, pausing and reflecting. Taking more time to journal, meditate, read and just breathe. Looking back on what’s most important in my life and letting go of what’s not. Recognizing what’s working and what’s not. Redesigning my future, deciding what’s missing and identifying the steps to take to get there.
Renew
Shedding physical and mental clutter. Going through everything! Kitchen cabinets, paperwork, closets, relationships. Organization brings clarity and peace. Releasing self-limiting thoughts, and all negative thoughts. Letting go of past failures, anxiety, and shame isn’t always easy, but working on ourselves allows us to evolve more into the person we are meant to be.✨
Revive
I’m planning things I love to do, with people I love. What are the things that make you feel most alive or bring you the most joy? Do more of them. Do cool things with cool people. Life is short. Put the events on the calendar. Now!✨

Balancing Well Being
By Noelle Joy
This article focuses on how we can learn to shift our attention to the support available for us in every moment, even the challenging ones, not through toxic positivity, but through a trained heart, body, mind, and spirit capable of navigating life's ups and downs.
Let me share a personal story. Recently, I felt sadness and powerlessness due to choices my child was making. I allowed those intense emotions to flow through me. It's important to note that feeling your emotions doesn't mean acting on them without restraint. We often misuse the notion of "doing whatever you feel." I encourage you to watch the inbody sensations that arise as emotions move through your body-mind; practice noticing them without opinion. As Alan Watts humorously puts it, "feeling your feelings is a redundant thing to say," but we humans excel at avoidance, turning to habits, addictions, or distractions to avoid facing our emotions.
Returning to my story, that day, I chose to get on my yoga mat to move, breathe, pray, and meditate because I knew it would help me. Despite my reluctance, I visited my neighbor
because I recognized the value of social connection at that moment. Did I still feel anxious and sad? Yes, at times. But I also felt content and loved during the day. This is an example of embracing the both/and: turning to practice tools for stability and allowing sadness without fixation. A healthy nervous system has the capacity to handle a day's ups and downs.
Consider the analogy of rot and fermentation. We must eliminate rot when necessary, but some aspects of life require time to become digestible. We need fermentation – not fixation – to allow for the unknown, to receive, to surrender, and let divine forces work. Some days, the best I have to offer is repeating, "I don't know, thank you," as a reminder of surrender and gratitude, simple but not easy.
Work with me in different capacities privately or small groups, or find my group classes and monthly workshop at Sandpoint Hot Yoga. Retreat coming in 2024.

Parent Mental Health
Prioritize and develop a support system
As a mental health therapist specializing in parent mental health, I've worked with many parents facing the challenge of balancing their well-being with caregiving. While prioritizing your loved ones is natural, it's equally crucial to prioritize your emotional health. Here are some practical tips for parents:
Self-Care: Dedicate moments each day to yourself. Whether it's reading a book or taking a nature walk, find activities that recharge you.
Build a Support System: Lean on loved ones and friends for emotional support. Connecting with other parents or seeking professional counseling can help you navigate challenging emotions and avoid burnout.
Practice Self-Compassion: Parenting can be overwhelming and trigger selfdoubt. Be kind to yourself, acknowledge mistakes, and remember that each day is a fresh start.
Set Boundaries: Manage stress by setting
limits on your time and energy. Learn to say no to additional demands on your plate.
Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. It keeps you present and lessens overwhelm. Small mindfulness practices can help you stay centered.
Remember, prioritizing your mental health isn't selfish—it benefits everyone in the household. By implementing these tips, you'll be better equipped to support your loved ones, cultivate healthier relationships, and create a nurturing environment for your children. If you continue to struggle, don't hesitate to seek professional help. I can assist you in finding a suitable provider to support you on your journey to better mental health.

Visionary. Creative. Quality. Timely. Respectful. These are just some of the words that Satterberg Design | Build clients have used in describing their exceptional experiences with owners John and Brandy Satterberg.
A full-concept, full-service, designbuild firm with 17 years of experience, Satterberg Design | Build offers custom building, renovation, and interior design services throughout Northern Idaho. But their commitment to their clients does not stop there.
In addition to custom-built homes and remodels, the experts at Satterberg Design can assist their clients with everything from furniture and home decor selection and placement; fixtures, finishes, and trims; custom drapery and window treatments as well as paint and wallpaper selections, just to name a few.
The team at Satterberg begins and ends with their client’s family in mind. They get to know their client, the client's unique needs and lifestyle, to build and design a place that reflects their client's best life while ensuring a consistent, cohesive design that flows seamlessly through the home.
For anyone who has dealt with a remodel or new construction, they are aware that coordinating with subcontractors can be
stressful, often leading to unexpected costs. That is where Satterberg can not only relieve stress but can also save their clients money. With over 17 years of construction management experience and over 100 homes built John makes sure his jobs are scheduled in advance, in proper order and with sub contractors that understand the importance of operating on a schedule ensuring the project is done on time and on budget.
When it comes to completing the look of your home, Satterberg has everything you need.
In June of this year, the couple opened Layered Fine Homewares, a beautifully curated showroom and storefront located in Downtown Sandpoint. There you will find a vast selection of high-end furnishings and décor.
With the desire to take their clients from vision to completion, John and Brandy will accompany you on your journey to make your dream become a reality.

Fall Bliss
A Local's Season
Begin your day in Sandpoint with a refreshing run along the Bay Trail, which traces the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. As you jog, you'll be surrounded by the soothing rustling of fallen leaves and the invigorating crispness of the autumn air. It's the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the lake and revel in the vibrant tapestry of fall foliage.
For a delightful lunchtime experience, make your way to Spuds Waterfront Grill, a local gem renowned for its delicious lunches. My all time favorite is the butternut squash soup—a hearty, seasonal delight that embodies the flavors of fall.
Following your meal, take a stroll through the heart of downtown Sandpoint. The essence of fall fills the air as you wander the charming streets. Here, you'll encounter a treasure trove of local shops, each offering a unique piece of Sandpoint's distinct charm. Supporting these local businesses isn't just a shopping excursion; it's a chance to connect with the community's heartbeat.
As the day progresses, consider embarking on a short drive to Roman Nose, a breathtaking natural area that encapsulates the essence of fall in Sandpoint. Here, you can hike around the tranquil lake while witnessing the mountains around you aglow with the rich, fiery hues of autumn. It's a simple yet profoundly enjoyable experience that shows off the vast amount of outdoor recreation our small town has to offer.

"Super" Breakfast
Prioritize Your Health
Starting your day with a healthy breakfast is a cornerstone of good nutrition and overall well-being. It sets the stage for a productive and energized day ahead. When you incorporate superfood smoothies into your morning routine, you take the benefits of breakfast to the next level, and here's why:
Coffee - Lattes - Espresso
Deluxe Toasts
Breakfast Sandwiches
Açaí Bowls Smoothies
Gluten Free + Dairy Free Baked
1. Increased Energy: Superfood smoothies are like a natural energy shot. Packed with nutrient-rich ingredients, they provide a sustained energy boost that helps you stay alert and focused throughout the day. Unlike sugary cereals or pastries, which can lead to energy crashes, these smoothies keep you powered up.
2. Nutrient-Packed: What makes superfood smoothies stand out is their exceptional nutritional profile. They're loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall well-being. Ingredients like kale, berries, and chia seeds offer a powerhouse of nutrients in every sip.
3. Weight Management: If you're looking to manage your weight, superfood smoothies are your allies. A nutritious breakfast can curb your appetite and reduce the temptation to snack on unhealthy options later in the day. The fiber content in these smoothies keeps you feeling full and satisfied.
4. Digestive Health: Good digestion is vital for nutrient absorption and overall health. Superfood smoothies often include fiberrich ingredients like berries and chia seeds, which promote healthy digestion
and ensure your body can efficiently absorb the nutrients it needs.
5. Stronger Immunity: Immunity is a hot topic, and superfood smoothies play a role here too. The ingredients in these blends, such as berries and leafy greens, are known for their immune-boosting properties. Regular consumption can help fortify your body's defenses and reduce the risk of illness.

If you have not been inside the Cedar Street Bridge to experience Sugar Tooth, you are missing out on what has become known as Sandpoint’s favorite chocolate shop.
Since opening in May of 2020, Sugar Tooth has become a favorite for those wanting to satisfy a craving with melt-in-yourmouth delectable delights.
Owner Payton shares that they source fair trade chocolate, and all their over 80 different sweets are made in-house where the customer can witness the candymaking process. While there are dozens of choices, Payton said that their caramel is among the most popular.
“Our classic caramel apple is a huge hit with locals and is available all year round,” said Payton.
Sugar Tooth is also popular for its peanut butter ball and traditional pecan turtles. With a desire to always expand on Sugar Tooth’s delectable delights, Payton takes pride in listening to his customers’ wishes and creating additional items.
“We are busy working on a special homemade fudge recipe that will be coming very soon to our eager following,” said Payton.
Other specialty items include unique soda flavors such as an enchilada-flavored soda as well as freeze-dried candy, and international candy. And if you are feeling a bit nostalgic, come find that sweet treat that will take you back to your childhood.
Sugar Tooth is open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and 10 am to 5 pm on Sundays.
If you are hosting a large party, an event, or a wedding, Sugar Tooth is happy to take large orders.
With Christmas approaching, be sure to shop local and make sure that for all your gift-giving needs you put Sugar Tooth, Sandpoint's Chocolate Shop, at the top of your list! They have gift boxes, gift baskets, and platters for your holiday parties.

Q & A with Brooke Heather, Restorative Naturopathy
Q: Your diverse background uniquely accompanies Live Blood Analysis (LBA). Who Can Benefit from this assessment?
A: LBA is valuable for those with mystery symptoms and health-conscious individuals wanting to be sure they are doing what they can to maintain health. LBA reveals hidden issues, such as dehydration, cellular health, and Zeta Potential (ZP). The latter affects nutrient and oxygen distribution if ZP is poor, which is when cells clump together.
With 15 years in Naturopathy and Functional Medicine, I bring a distinct set of lenses used to filter what I am finding in the blood. An example of this is the degree of gut-related problems - critical for immunity. I specialize in balancing chemistry and hormones with nutrition, emphasizing natural detoxification and chemical equilibrium. Biochemical balance ensures the body sustains health.
LBA is just one of a few cost-effective inhouse tests to track progress.
Q: This sounds trailblazing in terms of Preventive Medicine!
A: Indeed, LBA certainly is investigative. With this tool, it is as if peering into a window of the body offering insights into the health of the terrain.
Q: You are now right across the hall from 7BIV, how complementary.
A: Absolutely, this proximity allows me to focus on Live Blood Analysis and therapeutic collaboration potential for better community health outcomes.

Breathwork breathwork
Q. How did you discover breathwork?
A. I had experience with pranayama in my yoga practice and training, but it wasn't until I was listening to a podcast in February of 2020 that I heard about trauma-informed breathwork and tried an online meditative experience. It was then that I knew I was meant to pursue teaching breathwork as part of my life's purpose. I am now in the process of creating a breathwork academy training to help others learn how to facilitate breath using appropriate body anatomy and leadsafe containers.
Q. Describe breathwork
A. Breathwork is an umbrella term for various controlled and conscious breathing patterns that can improve our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual/energetic well-
being. The technique I use is conscious connected breathing with a blend of breath activation patterns. Every breath pattern unlocks a certain emotion, and we can work with this to heal and release stuck emotions and energy in the physical body.
Q. Is breathwork hyperventilation?
A. If it is not facilitated correctly, it can be. When we are using deep breathing and diaphragmatic breaths, we are oxygenating the body which leads to changes in carbon dioxide levels in the bloodstream. This has a variety of physiological effects. What separates breathwork from hyperventilation is the rate at which we are inhaling and exhaling. We want our breath to be as symmetrical as possible. In breathwork, we practice training the mind to focus solely on the breath.
Q. What is the difference between meditative and integrative breathwork?
A. Every journey has an intention. Meditative journeys are usually 30 to 45 minutes long but can be shorter depending on the experience of the breather.
I follow a titration model that allows the person's capacity to build up a greater CO2 tolerance with consistent sessions. These sessions are designed to release emotion and energy in the body and incorporate breath, sound, and movement to create homeostasis or balance in the nervous system.
Integrative breathwork is designed to help support us in our day-to-day life and should be practiced for five to 10 minutes each day, preferably throughout your day. A variety of techniques can be used - box breathing, four, six, eight, ten-count breaths, voo breath, etc. A great practice is setting up a pause alarm on your phone three times a day to stop what you're doing, get present wherever you are, and breathe deep belly breaths for four counts each. Focus on five things you are grateful for and create that moment of peace and stillness for yourself. You won’t regret it.
Q. Why is breathwork so powerful?
A. Your breath gives you control over your state of mind and your body's chemistry. Breathing gives you access to parts of yourself and your physiology that most people never realize is possible. Breathwork is a transformational experience that leads you home to who you truly are. Every journey is different and allows us to get curious about ourselves and others. It has truly changed my relationship with myself, my emotions, and most importantly, God.

The Hidden Benefits of Houseplants: Beyond Decor
Houseplants – you either love them or you hate them. There's generally very little in between, though the reasoning tends to fluctuate, it's almost always the same couple of stories. They're loved because you can keep them alive or loathed because you can't.
It says very little about you if you can't keep a plant alive, but it tends to reveal quite a bit about a person if they can. Chances are you're a nurturer and a lover if you've got greenery thriving in your home. That, or you're just really good at remembering to water on a somewhat regular basis. No matter the reasons why your plants are flourishing in your home, the science is clear – you're benefiting in multiple ways from having them there.
We all know that our air is cleaner, fresher, and more oxygenated with the presence of houseplants, but did
you know that they may also assist in boosting your immunity? Plants increase indoor humidity through a process called transpiration. A study from the Agricultural University of Norway shows that through this process, indoor plants can reduce your chances of developing some of the common illnesses that Idaho winters often bring. And we all know we can use all the help we can get in these parts.
Furthermore, science shows that houseplants are a natural stress reliever. Undoubtedly, some study somewhere demonstrates that houseplants can be a much more cost-effective form of therapy than standard talk therapy. I've personally never met anyone who has expressed regret for taking up the hobby of caring for houseplants. And for a good reason. The benefits are numerous, and the beauty they bring is endless.
A rejuvenating escape for your body, mind, and spirit. From head to toe, our professional massage therapists, skin and nail technicians will pamper you with a full range of spa and beauty treatments, including massage, hot stones, facials, body treatments, manicures and pedicures, and spray tanning.
