Common sense may be common ...
But Action Isn’t!
Would you be surprised if I told you that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health? Of course not; it is common knowledge. Even so, as recently as 2020, more than 30 million adults in the US smoked regularly. Here’s another example: Doctors know better than the average person that being overweight has significant negative impacts on a person’s health, yet over 40 percent of physicians in the US are
overweight. Common sense is not enough. Knowledge is not enough. Knowledge without purposeful action is meaningless.
Self-Improvement. No one improves themselves by accident. Once we are done with our formal schooling and education, our own growth and development is completely our own responsibility. You are the only one who can work on you; nobody else is going to take care of changing your bad habits or granting you better habits. If you want your career, your business, or your life to improve, you have to improve yourself— and that takes action.
Comfort Zone. Once you become aware there is something you want to change about yourself, it creates a tension between where you are currently and where you want to be. You must be
By Mickie Quinn
willing to face that tension and work on yourself to stretch and grow to your full potential. Change is hard, but the process of stretching, learning and growing can help you take your current situation and improve it.
Taking Action. The key is to start small. If you try to make big, dramatic changes, you are much more likely to quit soon after you start. Start by identifying one action you can start, or stop, doing. Make it small and achievable. Once you have consistently made that new action part of your regular routine, identify one additional action to start or stop doing. Big results do not happen overnight. Big results are achieved by taking small steps, consistently, over time.
Get a Coach. Self-improvement is a journey that you must decide for yourself to take. But you don’t have to take the journey alone. If you want to improve your chances of success, consider hiring a coach. Having a coach dramatically improves the speed and consistency of the changes you are trying to achieve. There are many different types of coaches in our greater Sandpoint community: There are health and fitness coaches, nutrition coaches, business coaches, transformation coaches, financial coaches, and many more. Coaches have the tips, tools, resources and experience to help you on your journey to improve.
When you are ready to work on the greatest project you will ever work on, which is YOU, know that common sense may be common, but it is action that will get you to where you want to be.

Local’s Summer
Experience a summer day in Sandpoint through the eyes of a local
It’s a sunny Saturday in Sandpoint, and the perfect day for me starts off with a Vinyasa flow class at We Yoga. It is possibly one of the best ways to start any day! I then head over to City Beach Organics for coffee or juice to complement a delicious breakfast. Di Luna’s Restaurant in Downtown Sandpoint is another one of my favorite breakfast spots, especially if you want to enjoy a mimosa!
Just around the corner, the Farmers’ Market is in full swing. Here I can purchase fresh produce and goods from local vendors. I love having fresh ingredients on hand to start the week.
From there, it’s off to the lake to board the boat for a day on Lake Pend Oreille, where I swim, surf, and meet up with friends at the sand bar. A boat ride out to Beyond Hope to Pearl’s on the Lake is the sweetest spot to enjoy a bite to eat and a delicious cocktail— all while taking in the beautiful sunset. On Sunday, you can enjoy live music while you relax and take in the expansive lake and mountain views.
There are too many favorites to hit in one day, but as a local Realtor, I think it’s important to shop within the community and support small businesses. I love our charming little town and the endless outdoor recreation it offers!

Bonner General Health Foundation Hosts Second Annual Find Your Strength 5k/1K Fun Run
Running for a Cause
By Patty Hutchens Bonner General Health Foundation
While many may view Bonner General Health as a small rural hospital, it is on the verge of becoming one of the leading resources in the state of Idaho for those who have lost the ability to walk due to stroke, injury and more.
“The Bonner General Health Foundation continues its mission to raise funds to purchase an Exoskeleton, a device used in physical therapy to assist those who have lost the ability to
“The little bit I was able to use the suit made a definite difference. I was able to get muscle response started in my lower abdomen and hips. That may not sound like a lot, but just being able to sit and lean over with more stability has made life easier,” says Owens.
This year’s proceeds from the Find Your Strength 5K/1K Fun Run will go far to bring the Exoskeleton to Sandpoint. The Foundation is
walk,” says Bonner General Health’s Community Development and Foundation Specialist, Molly Behrens. “Last year we held the first annual Find Your Strength 5K/1K Fun Run, and this year promises to be even more successful in our efforts to raise money for the Exoskeleton.”
Once purchased, Bonner General Health will be the only hospital in Idaho to offer this therapy. Sandpoint resident Chris Owens knows the value this will bring to the community. Owens was injured in a logging accident approximately 13 years ago, rendering him paralyzed.
For several years following his accident, Owens experienced fatigue and muscle atrophy. However, that all changed when he learned of the Exoskeleton, a state-of-the-art wearable robotic that assists in gait training and mobility. With the assistance of wrist canes and the Exoskeleton, Owens was able to walk for the first time in over a decade.
Unfortunately for Owens, and many like him, the closest facility with an Exoskeleton is in Wenatchee, Washington–a four-hour drive one way.
inching significantly closer to reaching its goal and is hopeful this event will put them over the top.
Registration for the event opened on May 1 and is open to all ages and abilities. The 1K Fun Run will again be a “Superhero” theme, and organizers encourage kids to sign up and dress as their favorite superhero.
This family fun run will include an after-party complete with music, food, drinks, magicians, face painting and more. Both races begin and end at Sandpoint City Beac,h with the after party taking place on the lawn at Trinity at City Beach. Children 9 and younger can participate for free, and registration is at the reduced price of $20 for ages 9 to 17. Adults are $45 if one registers in advance and will be $50 the day of the event.
“We also have several sponsorship levels available for businesses and individuals,” reminds Behrens.

Whether it’s branding, advertising materials or ensuring your team has the sharpest uniforms, Turner Promotions can help you.
Ron and Lisa Turner launched Turner Promotions three years ago with more than 30 years of small business branding, marketing and advertising experience.
They provide car decals, die-cut stickers, yard signs, embroidered apparel, T-shirts and team fan gear apparel, among other things.
“We also do a lot of logo designs, branding, and most every type of marketing and promotional items you can think of,” says Lisa.
As the parents of two sons, Ron and Lisa have been involved in local sports for many years.
“We pride ourselves on promoting our local athletic teams with fan gear and team stores,” Lisa shares, adding they offer the lowest prices possible.
“If you don’t see what you want, we can always print you a personal item at our store. We encourage people to stop in to feel things and try them on. Our Team Stores are all set up for pickup at our location or can be shipped direct to your home,” she adds.
They recently added team uniforms to their product line. And if you are on one of the local adult softball leagues, they offer sublimated jersey shirts with a five-day turnaround.
“We are also offering a new technology called DTF (Direct to Film), which is far superior to vinyldecorated apparel. It lasts longer, is vibrant and stretches with fabrics to avoid cracking. We are loving the results we get from it, and we are sure our clients will too,” affirms Lisa.
Please visit TurnerPromotions.com or visit their store at 46900 Highway 95 in Sagle.

Establishing balance and happiness
The Art of Grounding
By Brietta Leader Photos by Woods Wheatcroft Photography
The art of grounding is one of the most valuable tools one can establish for daily balance and happiness. A deep breath can be enough at times or a short walk to calm the nerves, yet the grounding I am talking about asks you to go deeper—to connect viscerally to your energetic roots that extend into Mother Earth and feel the inner chaos or contentment that rocks or revitalizes your inner core. The grounding I emphasize in life is the physical kind, the connection to inner stability that is resourced from the Earth, strengthened in movement and meditation practices with pursuits of steadiness of thought.
Pema Chodron, a famous Buddhist author, talks about the art of being ungrounded. I don’t remember her exact words, but the essence I received was all about embracing uncertainty, being OK with the moments that don’t feel as stable or peaceful, and letting your awareness grow as the sensations of being grounded and ungrounded differ greatly. We each get to choose how we want to live. Pema’s words
simply felt like permission to flail at times, which usually leads to breakthroughs and growth.
I can usually last a few days without meditation, yoga or a WildCore Movement practice before I feel off-balance and ungrounded. There are many ways this could be expressed. One might be a craving for certain heavy foods or drinks, easily frustrated with people or with myself, and unable to focus on anything with no real direction. When this happens, I know it is time to take a few breaths and engage in one of my “go-to” grounding practices like hiking, breathwork, yoga or dance. Re-centering does not have to take too long, it can be restored within five to 10 minutes once you have established your relationship to what “feeling grounded” is for you.
Our roots and ability to ground are in our connection to our first chakra—or the spinning wheel of energy located at the base of our spine. This root chakra relates to the animal side of our humanity, given our biological needs to survive and to feel safe and secure. These needs are water, food, shelter, family, community and belonging. Once these are met in a balanced fashion, we can feel relaxed and grounded.
This chakra devotes itself to the survival of the physical body and connects to our sense of smell, which links to our primal or limbic brain. Our sense of smell is a major key to survival. The olfactory receptors are located in the nasal cavity and immediately send messages to our limbic brain before we have even become conscious of what we are smelling. You may have sensed this when you smell a rose, which reminds
you of your grandmother’s garden, or a mix of smells that remind you of certain places. This is true for trauma and other emotions triggered by smell. That is why it is so powerful to use essential oils and other olfactory enticers like baking, or cooking with garlic, that give a deep sense of safety and grounding.
In Ayurvedic wisdom, the summer season brings an increase in the fire element. For those of us who already live with a lot of internal heat and energy to play, garden, work and stay up late to enjoy the outdoors, we can become ungrounded and burned out. That is why it’s important to maintain our strategies of cooling down with swims in the lake, adding mint to our water, practicing mindful breathing, and learning new creative pathways to feel grounded and balanced this summer.

Refined Aesthetics
Bri Williams is passionate about her work and the clients she serves. As the owner of Refined Aesthetics in downtown Sandpoint, Bri interacts with many women who rely upon her and her staff for their aesthetic needs. Over the years, those clients have confided in her about their health concerns. As a registered nurse for the past 15 years, Bri was motivated to do more to help her clients on their journey.
For the past two-and-a-half years, Bri has continued her work at Refined Aesthetics while also attending school. She recently earned her Master’s of Science in Nursing, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner degree to provide additional services for her clients.
“I knew I wanted to be able to help my clients in a way that I couldn’t as an RN. My Nurse Practitioner degree will allow me to expand the services we offer at Refined Aesthetics to include treatments targeted at vaginal rejuvenation to address vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and laxity, as well as urinary incontinence,” says Bri.
She explains that during the menopause transition, most women struggle with at least one of these issues—if not all. As a Nurse Practitioner, she can utilize technology that uses radiofrequency and electromagnetic stimulation that is extremely effective at targeting these concerns.
To be able to provide her clients with aesthetic treatments and address their health concerns is extremely rewarding.

A New Way Of Doing Dentistry.
By Patty Hutchens
Northern Peaks Dental
Since purchasing the Loftus Family Dental practice in February 2021, Dr. Emerson Godbolt has established a significant client base and the respect of many in the community.
Originally from Whitehall, Montana, Dr. Godbolt enjoys living in a small town and all the outdoor opportunities Sandpoint offers. He attended undergraduate school at Carroll College in Helena, fighting wildland fires to help fund his education. He later attended dental school at Oregon Health and Sciences in Portland, Oregon. But his education did not stop there. It is important to him to stay current with the latest in dentistry, so he has his Fellowship through the Academy of General Dentistry and will graduate with his Mastership in July of this year; a distinction held by less than 2 percent of dentists.
At Northern Peaks Dental, Dr. Godbolt employs three dental hygienists, four dental assistants and two front-office team members.
His practice is unique in that he offers many services that some dentists do not. He performs oral surgery for patients including wisdom teeth, tooth extractions and implants. For those who are anxious when it comes to dental visits, Dr. Godbolt can offer IV sedation and general anesthesia.

How to Live a Beautiful Life
By Tara Rapoport Celebrity Trainer + Movement Specialist Natural Fitness & WE Yoga
We all get the same 24 hours, and you want to be sure and make the most of it! A beautiful day starts the night before. Get to bed early and plan the day ahead. Set yourself up for success. Set out your workout clothes the night before, especially when you have early morning workouts. You’ll have more brain power for more important tasks. Set out everything including clothes, socks, shoes, and even a pre-filled water bottle. Set everything out for breakfast including bowls, spoons and any dry ingredients. Get up early, right when the alarm goes off. No snoozing. And never leave the house without making the bed. It sets the tone for the rest of your day.
Routine is everything. Keep it simple, both morning and evening. By having a structured routine, you will notice less stress.
Work out, preferably early, so there’s less that will come up during your day to get in the way. It is important to move daily, as it will boost your mood. Sweat once a day. It’s the fountain of youth! You will earn bonus points if you do your workout outside among Mother Nature.
Set aside some time for mindful meditation; whether it’s journaling, breath work or reading—or all of the above. Take time daily to practice gratitude and to read something inspiring. Never stop learning.
Eliminate what is unnecessary. Take time to figure out what’s important to you and say no to things that don’t support that life. Make the changes you need to make.
Slow down. Savor food. Eat more plants. Get the rainbow. It is always important to stay hydrated. Industry standards for drinking water are to drink a minimum of half your body weight in ounces every day.
Prioritize your sleep. Sleep is a fat burner. You should aim for seven to nine hours each night. It is the key to success.
Get those steps in, aiming for 10,000 steps each day. Less than that is not enough. Walk as much as you can!

IV vitamin drips are a powerful way to give your immune system a muchneeded boost. By delivering a high dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants directly into your bloodstream, an IV drip can help your body fight off infection and disease.
Many women turn to expensive skin-care products and treatments to improve the appearance of their skin. However, the secret to glowing, healthy skin may lie in an IV vitamin drip. IV drips deliver vitamin C, collagen, and other essential nutrients that help to boost skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone.
Feeling tired and sluggish is a common complaint among women in their 30s. But, by delivering a high dose of B vitamins, magnesium, and other energy-boosting nutrients, an IV drip can help you feel more alert, focused and energized. The benefits of an IV drip can last for several days.
IV vitamin drips are a safe and effective way to boost your health and beauty. If you’re interested in trying an IV vitamin drip, be sure to choose a reputable provider and consult with your health care provider to ensure that it’s safe for your needs. With regular IV vitamin drips, you’ll be able to achieve a healthy and vibrant lifestyle that will keep you feeling your best for years to come.

Drink Your Greens
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best things you can do for your health. Not only do they provide essential vitamins, minerals and fiber, they can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. However, many people struggle to incorporate enough fruits and vegetables into their daily diet. One easy solution? Smoothies.
Smoothies are a great way to pack many fruits and vegetables into one tasty drink. By blending them together, you can create a beverage that is not only delicious but also nutrient-dense. Plus, it’s an easy way to sneak in some vegetables that you may not enjoy eating on their own.
For example, leafy greens like spinach and kale are loaded with vitamins, but their bitter taste can be off-putting. By blending them up with some sweeter fruits like berries or pineapple, you can create a balanced and tasty smoothie that still provides all the benefits of those leafy greens.
Additionally, smoothies are a great option for those on the go. Instead of grabbing a quick, unhealthy snack, you can whip up a smoothie and take it with you to work or school. This can help you stay on track with your health goals while also providing a quick and convenient option.
Incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet is crucial for optimal health. Smoothies are just one easy way to do it. So, the next time you’re struggling to meet your daily recommended intake, grab a blender and start blending!
