Fall is in the Air Halloween is right around the corner — it’s so fun for
kids to dress up in their favorite hero costumes or make their own creations. Family Magazine has spooktacular pumpkin patches and trick-or-treat spots in the calendar; just look for the friendly ghost icon . There are fun games, treats and door decorations in our Halloween Round-Up on page 24 & 25; go to www.sandiegofamily.com for instructions. Look on page 27 for Día de los Muertos activities. Don’t forget apple season this time of year! Page 42 will make your mouth water. I can’t wait to make that cake for our family and the Family Magazine staff. While having fun, keep essential life skills sharp. Most kids don’t learn to cook, sew or manage finances in school anymore. Now it’s a parent’s responsibility to do this — or find an afterschool program that does. Take the time and effort to help your kids learn life skills — give them ageappropriate instructions and tasks. Find help on page 16 with great ideas to get started. Fall is in the air. Go for a hike in San Clemente Canyon, south of Hwy 52 (between I-5 and I-805). Walk through fallen leaves and check out the colors. Look up — there may be leaves on the trees yet. Listen. The breeze makes music with the leaves. Have a great, safe Halloween and beautiful fall!

Tell us about your favorite fall pastime or family tradition. Crystal Grobner, marketing representative Our favorite tradition is setting up our Halloween tree! We put our artificial tree up in October and the first decorations to go on are scary eyes, sparkly bats, masks, spiders and skeletons! In November it becomes a Thanksgiving tree, and then Christmas. Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant One of my favorite fall traditions is taking a weekend drive to Julian. I love to see the trees change color and wait in line at Julian Pie Company for a fresh slice of Dutch apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Randy Hahn, marketing representative Fall is my favorite time of year. I love to watch sports and there is so much going on: college football, the World Series, NFL, NBA and hockey. The weather is great, crowds at the beach start to fade — and then Halloween! Lisa Gipson, managing editor Pumpkin chili, apple cider sangria, chocolate-chip pumpkin pancakes, fall festivals and arts & craft fairs (the Harvest Festival, RBCPC Preschool Craft Fair and Bernardo Winery Fall Arts Fair are favorites in October!). Seriously, what’s not to love?
