Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Families

Fall is in the Air Halloween is right around the corner — it’s so fun for

kids to dress up in their favorite hero costumes or make their own creations. Family Magazine has spooktacular pumpkin patches and trick-or-treat spots in the calendar; just look for the friendly ghost icon . There are fun games, treats and door decorations in our Halloween Round-Up on page 24 & 25; go to www.sandiegofamily.com for instructions. Look on page 27 for Día de los Muertos activities. Don’t forget apple season this time of year! Page 42 will make your mouth water. I can’t wait to make that cake for our family and the Family Magazine staff. While having fun, keep essential life skills sharp. Most kids don’t learn to cook, sew or manage finances in school anymore. Now it’s a parent’s responsibility to do this — or find an afterschool program that does. Take the time and effort to help your kids learn life skills — give them ageappropriate instructions and tasks. Find help on page 16 with great ideas to get started. Fall is in the air. Go for a hike in San Clemente Canyon, south of Hwy 52 (between I-5 and I-805). Walk through fallen leaves and check out the colors. Look up — there may be leaves on the trees yet. Listen. The breeze makes music with the leaves. Have a great, safe Halloween and beautiful fall!

Tell us about your favorite fall pastime or family tradition. Crystal Grobner, marketing representative Our favorite tradition is setting up our Halloween tree! We put our artificial tree up in October and the first decorations to go on are scary eyes, sparkly bats, masks, spiders and skeletons! In November it becomes a Thanksgiving tree, and then Christmas. Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant One of my favorite fall traditions is taking a weekend drive to Julian. I love to see the trees change color and wait in line at Julian Pie Company for a fresh slice of Dutch apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Randy Hahn, marketing representative Fall is my favorite time of year. I love to watch sports and there is so much going on: college football, the World Series, NFL, NBA and hockey. The weather is great, crowds at the beach start to fade — and then Halloween! Lisa Gipson, managing editor Pumpkin chili, apple cider sangria, chocolate-chip pumpkin pancakes, fall festivals and arts & craft fairs (the Harvest Festival, RBCPC Preschool Craft Fair and Bernardo Winery Fall Arts Fair are favorites in October!). Seriously, what’s not to love?

Classic Life Skills that Foster Independence A generation or two ago, kids learned essential life skills at home — how to cook, manage money, sew, change car oil, etc. Some even had opportunities to learn these skills in home economics or vocational and automotive classes at school. Sadly, many of these skills are now a lost art that kids never learn or have to be figured out with assistance from a YouTube tutorial. One might question if these classic skills are still essential for kids to become independent adults. Consider this: Some colleges are now offering “adulting” classes to fill a gap for their students. More importantly, teaching children to be self-sufficient boosts confidence and self-esteem — and prevents them from relying on others to do these tasks later in life. Here are five classic life skills kids should know and tips to help your child master them. Cleaning “Kids are never too young to learn that each family member has responsibilities at home,” says Kelly Rupiper, who lives in Carmel Mountain Ranch with her husband and two children. Rupiper makes sure her kids help out around the house with age-appropriate jobs. Her 9-year-old son vacuums, unloads the dishwasher and helps with laundry, while her 6-yearold daughter dusts, makes her bed and feeds the dog. Teach kids to take pride in their surroundings. Little

ones can tidy up toys, change toilet paper rolls and sweep the floor with a small broom. As kids get older, teach them how to change light bulbs, clean the bathroom, empty trash and sort laundry. Tweens and teens should know how to wash, dry and iron their clothes.

Cooking Bowls of cereal and peanut butter sandwiches won’t cut it as a meal plan. That’s why it’s essential that kids learn basic cooking skills: how to scramble eggs, make pancakes and pasta, etc. “When teenagers graduate and go to college or move away, they need to know [how to] make a meal for themselves,” says Roqaia “Rocky” Alahmad, owner of Junior Chef San Diego. “Don’t be scared to let your kids cook,” advises Alahmad, who says it’s easy for young people to learn kitchen skills and safety at the same time. Teach them how to measure dry and wet ingredients, and teach knife skills so they can slice, dice and chop. Start small and keep cooking projects age-appropriate. For example, help your child make her own lunch until she can do it on her own. Encourage children to be involved in grocery shopping, weekly menu planning and making meals. Consider local cooking classes at www.juniorchefsandiego.com.

Money Management Finance expert Dave Ramsey advises parents to show kids how to save money, but suggests using a clear jar instead of a piggy bank so little eyes can watch the jar become filled with bills and coins. He encourages parents to have kids remove a few bills from the jar to buy a toy, so they quickly learn the value of their cash. Kids need to learn how to set (and stick to) a budget. There are a number of financial literacy apps designed just for families that can help. BusyKid allows kids to manage a weekly allowance and experience saving, investing, spending and donating real money. Learn more at www.BusyKid.com. Most modern kids may never have to write a check, but they should still learn how to fill one out and balance

a checkbook. They need to know the difference between debit and credit cards, and paying with cash or credit. Teach kids about loans by “financing” an item for them. They can make payments to you in installments and learn how much interest accrues when an item is not paid off immediately. Students in grades K–12 can learn about money with programs from Junior Achievement of San Diego County. For instance, their six-session afterschool program “More Than Money” teaches students (grades 3–5) to manage a bank account, identify jobs, smart saving and spending, and more. www.jasandiego.org/getinvolved/educators.html

Car Care Teach kids the value of car care. Start by inviting them to help pump gas, fill tires with air and get oil changed. Explain what the car’s sensors mean, including gas, tire pressure and check engine lights. They should learn how to replace windshield wipers and fix a flat tire. Encourage questions. If you’re not car savvy, consult auto tutorials online, ask your mechanic for tips or check with the local branch of American Automobile Association (AAA).

Parenting with Purpose

WARNING overparenting ! noun Being so worried about the safety or success of your children that you do too many things for them and prevent them from being independent. *As defined by macmillandictionary.com

How to Resist Overparenting and Set Kids Up for Success All parents dream of seeing their children grow up to be successful and happy. In today’s competitive, high-tech world, parents feel more pressure than ever to help kids make that happen. Is it any wonder that the temptation to control every aspect of a child’s life is also on the rise? Despite good intentions, helping kids too much leads to less long-term success and a host of other problems. They enter adulthood ill-prepared and without necessary life skills to overcome challenges on their own. Overcontrolling parents weaken the bond that can grow with well-differentiated adult children. Protecting that bond matters because loving relationships are the most significant indicator of future success and happiness, according to the longest running study on human happiness – the 79-year Harvard Grant Study. This adds up to one crucial parenting lesson: to set kids up for real success, loving parents must resist the urge to overcontrol and overparent.

A Healthier Way to Parent Julie Lythcott-Haims, former dean of freshmen at Stanford University and author of How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success cautions parents against getting it backward. “The point,” she says, “is to prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid.” This change of perspective is good news for exhausted parents frantically trying to manage every detail in a child’s life. Here’s how to resist overparenting and give your children more of what they need to succeed. cont. on p. 22

DRAWING AND PAINTING CLASSES FOR KIDS

Another driver for over-involved parents is the sense of personal pride and accomplishment they feel over a child’s success. Celebrating the achievements of children is one of the joys of parenting, but if your identity has become enmeshed with your child’s performance, it is time to take a step back.

Know what drives you. Parents hover and remove obstacles out of love. But love is often a cover for the underlying anxiety parents feel raising a child in a highly competitive culture. If fear and anxiety are fueling your parenting style, you’re not alone. Talk about your concerns with your partner, other parents, or a family counselor who can help you parent more confidently.

Honor healthy boundaries. The word “boundaries” may elicit thoughts of rules and regulations. But healthy relationship boundaries in parenting also means respecting children as separate and distinct individuals who must learn to navigate the world with confidence on their own. We can’t do that for them. Give kids a sense of agency and allow them to learn what experts call self-efficacy or the knowledge that one’s actions lead to outcomes. This knowledge inspires kids to take action toward a future fueled by their own hopes and dreams. Celebrate the struggle. When parents shield children from challenges, kids don’t learn the critical connection between struggling and accomplishment. Author and teacher Kyle Schwartz encourages parents to help kids see problems as a useful and natural part of life. In her book I Wish for Change: Unleashing the Power of Kids to Make a Difference, Schwartz describes how she uses the metaphor of ladder and slide with her students. “The ladder is when we have to climb. It’s when we must work hard and put in the effort. The slide is the joyful ride, the part of the day when the hard work paid off.” When family members share their daily ladder and slide, kids learn that everyone faces difficult situations

and that they are a good and necessary part of accomplishing goals. Let kids fail. Once kids discover that failing isn’t catastrophic, but can help redirect or redefine what to do next, they see failure differently. It makes them bolder and braver to try again. Understanding failure as a natural part of life is vital, and so lacking in first-year college students that universities across the country are offering classes and workshops that teach kids how to handle failure. Why not start now while kids are still at home? Step out of the way and let them try things on their own. Resist the urge to manage, handle or interfere. Cheer from the sidelines and let kids know that no matter the outcome, they are loved and remarkable human beings. Redefine success. Finally, there is a lot of noise swirling around about what it means for kids to succeed; parents should ask, “Succeed at what?” Success looks different for every family, so talk about what’s relevant to yours. Share goals and dreams and remain open to listening to your child’s interests and desires. Ask if priorities and time invested reflect these values. Look beyond assumptions and demands of others and keep the big picture in mind when planning your child’s schedule at school and personal time at home. Resist the pressure to add activities and classes to build a child’s resume for a future goal that may not even be on his radar. The best help parents can give children is not to help too much. Instead, give kids the room they need to grow into capable adults, ready to handle life’s challenges and pursue dreams of happiness and success with confidence and determination. v Jody Lee Cates is a local mom and blogger who writes about healthy relationships at www.jodyleecates.com.

Apple Cake Dulce de Leche Frosting with

Wondering what to do with all the delicious apples you picked in Julian or bought at the farmers market? Local food blogger, Jackie Bruchez, was kind enough to share her recipe for this mouthwatering cake, featured in her new cookbook Decadent Fruit Desserts. If the caramel apple on top doesn’t say “Hello fall,” we don’t know what does! Find the recipe and instructions at www.sandiegofamily .com/things-to-do/ dining-and-recipes.

Did you miss our round-up of local u-pick apple orchards last month? Find it at www.sandiegofamily.com/seasonal-happenings/apple-picking-san-diego. Plan your trip soon and check orchard websites and Facebook pages for updates — some farms run out of apples by mid-October.
