Short & Sweet

Does your family need help?

It may be “the most wonderful time of the year,” but let’s face it—not everyone is feeling warm and fuzzy right now. If your family needs help, call 2-1-1 to be connected to food, community, mental health and disaster resources. The confidential hotline is free to use and available 24/7. Visit www.211sandiego.org for more information.

Just a reminder that California state law says kids in TK through 12th grade attending public (including charter) schools can receive free breakfast and lunch every school day; meals must be consumed on campus. No sign-up is needed and there are no income requirements.

Looking for a unique way to “give back” this holiday season?

Take the kids to visit the Giving Machine in Old Town (4040 Twiggs St.) between now and Dec. 27 and let them pick a local or international nonprofit to support. There are dozens to choose from, and 100 percent of each donation (as little as five dollars) goes to the charities of your choice.

Frosty and Rudolph Cake Ball Truffles

Good things come to those who bake, especially when stirring up something as adorable and delicious as these holiday cake balls from local mom Jennifer Garcia. The kids will love rolling and decorating almost as much as their jingle bellies will enjoy making them disappear. Cake Ball Truffles make a festive holiday gift for friends, classmates, co-workers and neighbors, so be sure to make enough for everyone on your nice list. But be forewarned: Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Cake Balls may result in a complete loss of elf-control!

Oh, What Fun!

Make beautiful salt dough ornaments

Ingredients

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

1 cup warm water

Directions

1. Mix ingredients until thoroughly combined.

2. Roll out dough to ¼-inch thickness. (Note: The thicker the ornaments, the longer the drying time.)

3. Use cookie cutters or stamps to shape and cut the dough as desired.

4. Punch a hole in the top of each ornament with a straw.

5. Lay ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheet. Air dry ornaments until hard (2–5 days) or bake at 200 degrees for about an hour. Turn ornaments over halfway through drying or baking time.

6. Find inspiration in the “Optional Tools & Decorative Elements” list and decorate as desired.

7. Sign and date back of ornaments before sealing with protective coating.

8. Allow to dry before adding a string or bow for hanging.

decorate your own home or tree. I love the idea of having a small tree just for kids to decorate. Homemade ornaments are a resourceful and heartfelt way to decorate their own tree without spending a fortune.

Get the whole family involved in this festive activity! Gather supplies, turn on your favorite holiday tunes and start crafting. As an added benefit, letting kids get their hands dirty with flour and paint encourages creativity, enhances confidence and helps develop fine motor skills.

One of my favorite memories as a child was decorating my grandma’s tree because I got to see ornaments my father, aunt and uncle made as children. I hope my nostalgia for homemade ornaments is inherent in my own children—and that you find as much joy in this project as I do. v

Optional Tools & Decorative Elements

• Cookie cutters and cookie stamps: Create or emboss fun shapes and whimsical words on the ornaments.

• Precision knife for parents: To shape around handprints or footprints

• Reusable straw: Makes a great hole punch

• Non-toxic acrylic paint: If painting ornaments, let them dry or bake first, then paint.

• Mica powder: A fine powder made from natural minerals that provides a shimmery, metallic effect. Pour a small amount onto shaped ornaments (before drying or baking) and use your finger to gently rub it into the dough. Use a clean, dry paint brush to even out the powder and remove excess.

• High grit sandpaper: To smooth out rough edges after drying or baking

• Food coloring: Create additional colors by mixing food coloring into dough before shaping.

• Extra fine glitter: Dust onto ornaments immediately after applying topcoat for a lustrous effect.

• Protective coating: Modge Podge is a popular option, but I prefer to seal the ornaments with two coats of clear, semi-gloss spray paint for a smooth, even varnish.

• Ribbon, bows or string: To make a hanging bow, tie a bow around an anchor point (like a candle or jar), then gently lift the bow off. With the bow in front of the ornament, gently maneuver the back loop of the ribbon through the hole.

• Twine and wooden beads: A rustic hanging alternative to ribbons and bows

Green Christmas

How to have a sustainable holiday season

Holiday excess continues to be at an all-time high. According to the 2025 Holiday Outlook survey from PwC, shoppers will spend $1,552 on gifts, travel and entertainment this holiday season. While that might seem like a lot of money, even more surprising is how much goes into landfills. It is estimated that a whopping two-thirds of people will return at least one item during the holiday season. Due to high costs of processing those returns (shipping, examining, restocking), at least half of the items go into landfills. Optoro, a returns solution company for retailers, estimates that five billion pounds of return waste is added to landfills annually.

In addition, Waste Cost Solutions estimates that during the holiday season an additional one million tons of waste is produced each week in the United States. This includes shipping and packaging materials for delivered gifts and packing containers for holiday meals.

We might not be able to eliminate waste completely, but there are ways to make a positive impact on the environment as we celebrate the holidays.

Cut down a real tree. Go to a local Christmas tree farm and cut down a tree instead of buying a precut tree at a lot, which needs to be shipped in from a tree farm. Artificial trees are made from petroleum products, primarily PVC, and cannot be recycled; plus, purchasing an artificial tree incurs manufacturing and shipping resources.

Snail mail? Use recycled paper greeting cards if you’re mailing cards this year and recycle cards received when the season is over. If you’re crafty, turn holiday cards into decorations, gift tags and ornaments for next year—especially those that have foil and glitter embellishments, which can’t go into the recycle bin. Plantable cards made with seeded paper are another eco-friendly idea. Find them on Etsy or through companies like Botanical Paperworks.

Thrift your gifts. The stigma around thrifted gifts is not what it used to be. The 2024 OfferUp Recommerce Report: Holiday Special Release shows that 65 percent of parents are likely to purchase a secondhand item this year. Many people buy used books, baby

It’s the Little Things: 10 Easy Ways to Save Energy

1. Use a programmable thermostat; there’s no need to heat an empty house.

2. Conserve water by limiting shower time.

3. Unplug appliances and other electronics that are not used every day.

4. Combine errands instead of going out several times a week.

5. Walk instead of drive, whenever possible.

6. Only use the dishwasher and washing machine when full.

7. Seal cracks around doors and windows to keep cold air out and warm air in.

8. Replace HVAC air filters regularly to maximize efficiency.

9. Open curtains/blinds during the day to allow sun to help warm the house.

10. Use solar chargers to charge devices. Most only take a couple hours, so no need to charge overnight.

items, large toys, games, furniture and clothing for themselves throughout the year; there’s no reason why it can’t be done for gifting. Check out eBay, OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace to find treasured items for loved ones.

Wrap in reusable materials. You’re probably already using recycled gift bags and shirt boxes, which is great! To give older boxes new life, wrap box tops in holiday paper. Consider wrapping gifts in fabric and tying with a ribbon. Bonus if the fabric is something that can be reused as well, such as holiday tablecloths or a scarf. Repurpose the front of last year’s holiday cards as gift tags. Instead of using bows, attach candy canes or another consumable treat.

Buy less. As families get older, they need less “stuff.” Consider gifting experiences, memberships or tickets. Gift your family a trip that comes with priceless memories. If you want everyone to open something, do a Secret Santa gift exchange where each person only buys for one relative or member of the friend group. Gift cards (especially those that are digital) are nice, but consider cards for consumables, like restaurants or theaters to avoid post-holiday shipping.

Shop local. Nothing says “Hallmark Christmas Movie” like purchasing holiday foods at small, independently owned neighborhood shops. Find locally sourced meats, produce, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, jams, syrups and teas at one of San Diego County’s many farmers markets to complete holiday shopping. Supporting local farmers not only strengthens the local economy, it also reduces the carbon footprint by avoiding shipping.

Use greener lights. If you haven’t already, switch to LED lights which consume 80–90 percent less energy compared to incandescent lights. LED lights also last three times longer, so you won’t have to replace them as often. When it’s time to replace lights, look for recycling centers that take LEDs instead of adding them to landfills. Put outside lights on a timer instead of leaving them on overnight or use solar spotlights.

If you have a Christmas tree, be sure to recycle it when the holiday season ends. Many communities have recycling drop-offs where trees are mulched to add nutrients to soil. Some local groups even offer to pick up trees for a small fee as a fundraiser. They then recycle the trees; a win-win for everyone. v

Your Energy, Your Control.

California has ambitious energy goals, including greater adoption of electric technologies in homes and vehicles. A part of this journey is the Base Services Charge, which moves some fixed costs to serve customers out of electric prices and into a separate line item on your bill.

SDG&E offers plans with lower electricity prices for running larger appliances during off-peak hours when energy demand is low. We also have easy-to-use online tools to track your energy use and manage your bill, along with assistance programs that provide monthly bill discounts for qualifying households.

We’re committed to helping customers manage their bills while supporting California’s path toward cleaner, more sustainable energy for generations to come. Learn more at
