School was challenging. She was having trouble socially with friends, having trouble focusing at school, just generally seemed unhappy. We noticed so many different things as soon as we started Brain Balance... and it kept getting better, and better, and better. – Allison C., Brain Balance Parent

This is what

Outstanding Dads look like

In honor of Father’s Day (June 20), we recently asked San Diego County residents to nominate men who are outstanding dads and to tell us why they feel that way. The only requirement was that the dads be local residents and have at least one child from newborn to age 17. This month we’re highlighting seven fathers—six nominated by their wives and one by a family friend. Here is what they had to say. Jose Montiel, Escondido Dad to Mateo (3) and Alyssa (5) Jose is an amazing father! He works full-time, is a fulltime student at CSU San Marcos, serves on the PTA at our daughter’s school and is a volunteer youth sports coach. Jose was in his last semester at Mira Costa College when the pandemic hit in spring 2020. We were working from home with two children and he still managed to graduate with his associate’s degree, with high honors. Jose is a hands-on father and always the first to volunteer at school, help the youth basketball and soccer teams that need coaches, and support our neighbors. He is an incredible man who strives to be the best for his family and friends. – Jessica Montiel (wife)

Chris Holman, San Marcos Dad to Bella (6) and Bradley (8) Chris has always been an active member of the community and volunteers to coach our kids’ sports teams. During COVID, when sports were put on hold, we were discussing with other families how much our kids missed playing baseball. Chris decided to get our son and a small group of boys together to practice on a weekly basis. As word spread about their regular baseball practices and restrictions were lifted, it turned into Chris coaching an entire team (even with his busy career). When San Marcos finally announced that baseball could resume, he advocated to keep this group of boys together and created a travel team just for them. The amount of time and effort he has dedicated—and the impact he’s had on this group of kids—is incomparable. – Lauren Holman (wife)

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2021

Yee and his dad, Dr. Da Fei Feng, who passed away in October

Nick Diede, Encinitas Dad to Holden (8) and Avett (4) My husband Nick had to close his business last year because of COVID. He owned an indoor soccer facility in San Marcos, where he trained young athletes in a positive environment. If you ask anyone who knows him, they will rave about his kindness, sense of humor, and ability to help youth on and off the field. He took some time to recover from the devastating loss of his business and then started a new business called New Day Soccer Training— teaching soccer to local athletes of all ages. He is the most incredible dad and an amazing role model for our sweet boys. – Lynnie Diede (wife)

Yee Feng, Rancho Peñasquitos Dad to Ellie (10) and Jediah (12) I am nominating long-time family friend, Yee Feng. My husband’s mother and Yee’s mother have been friends for over four decades—the boys grew up together. Yee is outstanding because he led quarantine singalongs for 100 days in a row (and in two different cities), he uprooted his family to care for his widowed mother, he is a role model to his children, and is devoted to his wife Carolyn. He also works full time, does photography (Feng Images), and is an amateur (but avid) bike racer who traversed nearly 12,000 miles last year. During the pandemic, Yee’s family took their voices and instruments outdoors to lead an impromptu neighborhood singalong, which attracted the support of many community members, who started joining them each evening at dusk. They sang a different song each day to bring smiles and cheer to neighbors, then posted the music on social media to delight a wider viewing audience. In the middle of quarantine (after living in Seattle for many years), Yee and Carolyn shared the conviction to move their family back to Rancho Peñasquitos (where Yee was born and raised) because Yee’s father was going through treatment for late-stage cancer. They uprooted their two kids so that Yee could take care of his mother who needed emotional and health care support. Yee’s father, Dr. Da Fei Feng, a UCSD chemistry professor and devoted father, passed away in October. The whole family and hundreds of church friends grieved the passing of this quiet and noble grandfather through a Zoom memorial service, where Yee once again led everyone in song and celebration for his beloved father. – Jenny Ho (family friend) June 2021 • SanDiegofamily.com •

Adrian Ruble Rancho Peñasquitos Dad to Charlie (6) and Cecilia (2) Although my husband is currently deployed, he is an incredible dad. Without being physically present, he ensures that both kids feel loved by reading stories to them, leaving video messages and writing emails when communication is limited. Going above and beyond comes naturally and we are grateful that he is able to serve our country while still being present in their lives. The kids look forward to being reunited with Daddy and describe their dream “homecoming day” daily. We are definitely blessed. – Mariska Ruble (wife)

Ryan Fulton, Clairemont Dad to Jamison (6), Presley (3) and Jocelyn (10 mos.) Ryan and his family own Dan Diego’s Pub in Bay Park. When COVID hit, he used the pub’s deliveries of food, milk, toilet paper, and other necessities that were sold out in stores to deliver them to community members. He dropped items at doorsteps for people unable to leave their houses. Ryan kept his staff as busy as possible and tried to keep everything running smoothly during all the county ups and downs. Day in and day out, he has spent the last year serving his restaurant community with whatever they need and going above and beyond for our neighborhood, all while taking the helm of our son’s kindergarten virtual learning. He is our outstanding dad! - Julia Fulton (wife)

Jason Hsu, Oceanside Dad to Emerson (5), Griffyn (3), and 5-month-old twins Dempsey and Monroe Finding out you are having twins in the middle of a pandemic seems like more surprise than anyone could handle, but not my husband Jason. He cleaned up lots of “morning sickness”, loved on two little girls who were missing every aspect of normal, and fulfilled his responsibilities at work while growing his own company. He does all of this while making everyone he interacts with feel seen and safe. – Kelyn Hsu (wife) v

Now that it’s becoming safer to travel, families are hittin’ the road with restored gratitude and a newfound enthusiasm to discover their surroundings. Desperate to make up for “lost time” and missed opportunities, many people have the same idea as campground reservations fill and RV sales skyrocket. If you’re one of the families chomping at the bit to explore the great outdoors, you’ll want to tap into what we’re doing this month and next—sharing camping tips, helpful resources and some of our favorite SoCal spots to camp. According to Visit California, our state is home to nine national parks and 280 state parks, so there’s no need to go far—adventure awaits in our own backyard! San Diego Metro KOA Resort Chula Vista In addition to RV and tent sites, our local KOA offers camping cabins, deluxe cabins (with bathrooms), glamping tents, and plenty of amenities for families, including an onsite pool, jumping pillows, grass field, playground and more. www .koa.com/campgrounds/san-diego Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay Chula Vista Have you heard? There’s a new RV resort in town that also features fully equipped luxury cottages, pool, splash pad, arcade, sports courts (pickleball, bocce ball and basketball), and themed activities (bike parades, arts & crafts, movie

nights, competitions and more). Onsite café opens this summer. Bonus: The property is right next to Living Coast Discovery Center! www.sunrvresorts.com/sunoutdoors-san-diego-bay Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground Buellton, CA Flying Flags, located about five hours north of San Diego, offers fun camping accommodations such as cabins, vintage trailers, airstreams and luxury safari tents, in addition to RV sites. They have two pools, onsite dining, bocce ball courts (and more) on property—and are located adjacent to wine country, Solvang and an ostrich farm! Read about it in our article “Take the Family Glamping in Buellton, California” at www.sandiegofamily.com/thingsto-do/travel/a-glamping-adventurein-buellton-ca. Campland on the Bay Mission Bay (San Diego) San Diego’s favorite waterfront RV resort sits on the shores of Mission Bay. Campland has provided family-friendly fun for over 50 years, attracting repeat campers for decades. The property features a new giant inflatable water slide, skateboard park, cantina, scheduled activities (bubble soccer, dodgeball, outdoor movie nights, etc.), bike and watersport rentals (kayaks, pontoon boats, SUPs, etc.) and more.

TIPS FOR NEW FAMILY CAMPERS Jeremy and Stephanie Puglisi are the cohosts of “The RV Atlas” podcast and have authored several books, including Where Should We Camp Next? Here are their tips for beginning campers. 1. For your first trip, camp close to home in a familiar environment. 2. Consider Sunday–Thursday trips to avoid weekend crowds and have a bit more space to yourself (prices also tend to be lower). 3. Don’t spend a ton of money on gear when starting out (rent or borrow gear, if possible). Invest in better equipment later if you fall in love with camping. 4. Before departure, practice using equipment at home so you are familiar with how everything works and can address any issues in advance of your trip. 5. If you rent an RV, reserve a pull-through site instead of a back-in site. It’s less stressful and easier to navigate. 6. Consider reserving a site at a private or family-owned campground for your first trip, so an owner or manager is there to help if needed. State and National Park campgrounds are beautiful, but often understaffed (better for second or third trip).

RVshare is a peer-to-peer online platform for RV owners and people who want to rent them (think Airbnb, but for RVs). If you’re interested in renting an RV (a great way to test one out before purchasing) or you own one and want to rent it out, check out www.RVshare.com. Did you know? It’s possible to experience RV camping without driving one! When you rent your RV, ask if they offer campsite delivery and set-up. Harvest Hosts is an affordable membership program that offers RVers free overnight stays at unique locations such as wineries, farms, museums and botanical gardens. www.harvesthosts.com

7. Arrive at the campground during daylight hours. Set-up is challenging and can be stressful when it’s dark, especially when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings. And late-night arrivals may be disruptive to campers in neighboring sites.

Learn about the California Responsible Travel Code at www.visitcalifornia.com/thingsto-do/travel-california-respectcalifornia.

8. Keep food simple. Maybe don’t try Dutch oven peach cobbler on your first trip. But do try easy foil packet dinners.

County of San Diego Camping 858-565-3600; www.sdparks.org

9. Involve kids in set-up, breakdown, and camp chores—it’s a great opportunity to teach them stewardship and responsibility. Everyone should pitch in and earn the fun! 10. Always leave a campsite better than you found it.

Mission Bay RV Resort Mission Bay (San Diego) Overlooking the shores of De Anza Cove and adjacent to sister property Campland on the Bay is Mission Bay RV Resort. It’s typically more low-key than Campland, but includes complimentary access to their amenities and activities, so it’s the best of both worlds! www.MissionBayRVResort.com

Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground (near the border) The newest addition to San Diego County’s camping options, Tijuana River Valley Campground features dozens of tent and RV sites, and yurts that sleep 6–10 people! Search for Tijuana River Valley under “Which Park” at https://reservations.sdparks.org/ reservation/camping.

San Diego Parks with

Natural

Playgrounds

All photos credited to Sandra Page

Sandra Page

Parks with natural playgrounds are gaining popularity throughout San Diego County. They feature environmentally friendly structures using mostly natural or recycled materials, which creates beautiful, exciting playgrounds that are fun and safe for kids of all ages.

Junior Quail Trail 230 Quail Gardens Dr., Encinitas Located within San Diego Botanic Garden is a garden designed for preschool-age kids (and their families) to connect with nature. The area is located at the far end of the garden, in the former Eucalyptus Grove. It features upcycled and natural materials, with a focus on movement and learning from one’s surroundings. Logs on the ground become balance beams; tree stumps become jumping platforms; and strategically placed pine cones, twigs, and rocks offer a spot for imaginative play and games. Insider Tips: • Junior Quail Trail is located inside SD Botanic Garden, which requires paid admission. Daily rates are $10/kids (ages 3–17), $18/adults. • Bring a stroller. The area is located opposite of the parking lot. You don’t want those little legs tired before arriving.

24 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2021

Nature Exploration Area 2221 Morley Field Dr., Balboa Park One of the first designated natural playgrounds in San Diego County was when the Nature Exploration Area at Morley Field was built in 2015. At first glance, you might walk right past, as it blends in beautifully with natural elements of the park. Give your kids time to explore and soon you’ll be building forts with branches and other natural materials left behind. Enjoy a boulder climbing area and a table and chairs made of tree stumps. Insider Tips: • The area can be a tricky to find—it’s directly south of the Balboa Tennis Club. • It’s also directly adjacent to Florida Canyon Trail, a perfect starting point for a day of nature exploration. • Park in front of the tennis club or in the lot off Morley Field Dr.

Estrella County Park 9813 Estrella Dr., Spring Valley The newest natural playground to hit the area is Estrella County Park in Spring Valley. The park features natural play elements such as tree stumps and logs, perfect for children to climb on and jump to. You’ll also find a slide built into the hill, a swing and a kid-friendly suspension bridge. Native plants and trees line the walking path to and from the play area. There’s also an amphitheater and plenty of picnic tables for a group. Insider Tips: • Parking is limited to a small section of the street. • There is no shade; lather up that sunscreen!

Gershwin Park 3549 Conrad Ave., Clairemont Mesa Within Gershwin Park in Clairemont is the Jennifer Jones Memorial Nature Exploration Area. This section includes 6,000 sq. ft. of natural play space that inspires imaginative play with tree stumps, big logs, boulders and small trails. Like all natural playgrounds, it was designed to be inviting and educational. It’s the perfect place to have a tree stump tea party! Insider Tips: • There’s a large grassy area to have a picnic. Stop by Clairemont Square to grab lunch— Arely French Bakery (4961 Clairemont Dr. #A) is delicious. • There are no restrooms at this park. v
