Families

Does your family have New Year’s traditions?

Happy New Year! Time is flying by! Twenty years ago we were

concerned about computers and electronics changing from 1999 to 2000. Now we are 20 years older— hopefully healthier and wiser. New Year’s resolutions are often broken or forgotten by February, but editor Lisa Gipson suggests changing the focus and making resolutions a family affair. That might make them more effective and fun! Spending time together and building family memories is priceless. If this hasn’t been happening in your family, find information in Shannon Dean’s article on page 24. You can even bring in STEAM activities while having fun with your family. The kids can learn (and be entertained) without sitting in front of an iPad. Look on page 16 for ideas. You also need to take care of yourself. If Mom or Dad isn’t happy, the family isn’t happy! Check out page 18 to find ideas for personal time, such as walking, meditating and spending time with friends. Find time to do things you like to do. Make 2020 the healthiest, happiest and most memorable year for your family. Keep up the good work!

Tracy Real, “Full STEAM Ahead” contributor New Year’s Day involves relaxing and movies. Our tradition has always been to reflect upon the past highlights of the year and review pictures that captured those moments. Randy Hahn, marketing representative Every year we eat blackeyed peas on New Year’s Day (even if it’s just a spoonful). We usually also have collard greens and ham or tri-tip, but we look forward to the good luck the black-eyed peas bring each year!

What are you looking forward to in 2020? Althea Hutchinson, freelance writer In 2020 I am looking forward to some awesome travel adventures. My spirit has been craving travel lately so I plan to delve into that, taking my little family along for the ride. Jenny Burman, calendar editor I’m looking forward to reuniting with friends from high school (some I haven’t seen in 25 years), traveling to a country my son has wanted to visit ever since he got into Pokémon and Godzilla, and seeing my firstborn graduate from college.
