PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

The 2021 Yearbook tells of how we boldly re-imagined and nimbly adapted school experiences in the new normal resulting from the COVID pandemic. Out of this we discovered a new capability, a new confidence and a new courage.

So, we welcome 2022 with the Year Theme: New Hopes, Unbounded.

This Year Theme is befitting as we move out of the COVID-19 pandemic into the endemic stage in the course of 2022. To be COVID-resilient, courage, nimbleness and positivity are what it takes for us to emerge strong and full of hopes. As we welcome 2022, we want to remain optimistic and hopeful about what the future holds for us, and we will help one another to adapt to the changes, always standing together as one. As the saying goes, “After the rain, comes the sunshine”.

Indeed so. In 2022, the Speech and Prize-giving Day was a triple celebration as we marked the event with the long-awaited School Official Opening Ceremony and the opening of the Tan Suat Hua-TKGS Heritage Gallery. It was a day of jubilation and thanksgiving! The new school vision, mission and values were officially launched. We were proud to take our special guests on a tour of the upgraded school campus.

Since the move back to 20 Dunman Lane in 2019, we have been re-imagining learning spaces beyond the classroom. This effort continued uninterrupted during the COVID-pandemic years. In fact, there was an even greater exploration of learning spaces to push possibilities for authentic learning beyond the classroom. By 2022, the many creative learning spaces include the Mindfulness Garden, Mindfulness Gym, Music Wall, Virtual Reality Lab, Performing Arts Studio, School Library, Art Gallery and the school heritage gallery. Look out for these in the yearbook!

Beyond the hardware, we have also been investing in the software. The efforts in the past 3 years to foster quality relationships at various levels (teacher-student, student-student and among staff) have borne fruit. The positive outcomes in the Quality of School Experience survey and Staff Engagement survey bear testimony to this. I hope that when you are browsing the section on academic learning and student development experiences, you will come to appreciate how we strengthen bonds, integrate learning as well as promote social-emotional and mental well-being to create a positive school tone and foster a strong sense of belonging among students. At the staff level, the narrative is equally encouraging as the staff culture shows transformational shift in 2022. The staff narrative is also about us riding new waves - courageous, imaginative, undeterred - to rebuild our professional craft as teachers. As you go through the pages, catch our teachers as active learners in our fortnightly professional development sessions, staff retreats and department retreat. Don’t miss out the learning journey and retreat for our Executive and Administrative staff.

The 2022 School Yearbook is therefore a celebration of us emerging stronger out of the COVID-pandemic. It is the story of us rediscovering ourselves as a school, of us growing stronger, wiser and more purposeful with the refreshed school vision and mission. It is the story of us becoming more adaptable and resilient - united as a collective, connected as a community with a clearer sense of identity and a deeper sense of purpose and mission. It is TKGS with New Hopes, Unbounded!

YEAR THEME 2022

4 TANJONG
New Hopes, Unbounded New Hopes, Unbounded SCHOOL

The Year Theme is jointly conceptualized by the Principal, Assistant Year Head Mr David Chung, and the Prefectorial Board (PB) EXCO.

In conceptualizing the 2022 Year Theme, the PB EXCO wanted a continuation from the past 3 years’ themes, much like a series of stories. In 2019, the theme was “Nova Initia”, which means “New Beginnings”, followed by the 2020 theme of “Ausa Volare” , which means “Dare to Soar” . In 2021, the theme was “Fortitudo.Exorior.Novum Folium” , which means “Fortitude. Arise. Anew”

Building on and building up, the Year Theme for 2022 is: New Hopes, Unbounded.

Through the Year Theme, we want to remind TKGians not to be worn out by unnecessary worries about what the future might bring. The COVID pandemic may have altered many things but it has never changed our TKGS Spirit. We want to remember fondly how as a school, we made the best of the new normal and continued to celebrate school events like Chinese New Year, Youth Day, Sports Carnival, Leaders’ Investiture, Teachers’ Day and TK Spirit Week. We continued to create many collective memories as TKGS Family.

This Year Theme serves to motivate TKGians to face any circumstances positively and be courageous in chasing their dreams, like the paper plane soaring upwards into the open sky. We not only have new hopes. Our new hopes are unbounded. “Unbounded’ describes a positive feeling that is very great and has no limits. This is represented by the infinity symbol. Three flowers – daffodil, gladiolus and sunflower – are chosen. Daffodil, being the earliest spring flower after winter, represents a new beginning while the gladiolus symbolizes strength of character and the sunflower conveys warmth.

So, in 2022, we encourage the TKGians to see the endless possibilities no matter what happens. May we collectively have boundless positivity, limitless resilience and abundant courage in the face of adversity. With the Year Theme “New Hopes, Unbounded”, our wish is that 2022 will be a year of abundant growth and limitless dreams for the TKGians.

TKGS School Official Opening Ceremony and 69th Speech & Prize-Giving Ceremony

TKGS School Official Opening Ceremony, as well as the opening of the TKGS-Tan Suat Hua Heritage Gallery and Speech & Prize-Giving Ceremony were held from 11th to 16th April 2022. This ceremony themed New Hopes, Unbounded marks the beginning of a new chapter in TKGS’s history. This encourages the spirit of boundless positivity, optimism, limitless resilience, abundant courage, possibility thinking and new ways of thinking amongst the TKGS family while taking cognizance of the rich heritage and legacy of TKGS. Anchored in service and leadership, timeless themes that permeate the TKGian identity, TKGS is now at the forefront of designing and enhancing programmes to meet the 21st century needs of the students, leveraging the improved physical facilities of the school to propagate the concept of the TKGS campus being

“To grow the Gracious Woman, Inquisitive Learner and Servant Leader, we therefore set ourselves the mission of nurturing lifelong learners and stewards who lead from within and have an impassioned spirit to serve common good. Many of our girls are high achieving and well-resourced. I see it as important that our girls remember that we do not seek knowledge and achievements solely for our personal gain, but that even as the TKGians enjoy many privileged opportunities in their schooling years here in TKGS, they will still keep an observant eye to see the needs of others, hold an attentive heart to care about community issues, and take courage to act on social causes. So, the charge before us is to raise our girls to be more than accomplished learners. Our mission is to grow the TKGians as gracious women, lifelong learners, and most importantly, leaders of character with the impassioned spirit to serve common good. Just as the school song calls upon the TKGians to “serve in honour and work for selfless fame, for credit of our country and glory of her name”.” – Principal’s Report

2022 STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Every TKCher is a purposeful, values driven and reflective practitioner who aspires to grow professionally and master his/ her craft with a clear conviction. In our journey as a reflective community, we learn and grow together through a myriad of carefully curated staff development programmes.

EXPLORING TKGS LANDSCAPES (MASTERCLASS 2022)

Learning beyond the confinements of a classroom environment, TKchers explore different learning spaces to enhance students’ learning experiences. TKchers find ways to innovate instructional activities while coordinating with students’ preference, interest and engagement, sense of challenge and competencies to foster joy for learning in students. This paved the way for the 2022 Masterclasses sharing. The sharing highlighted the impact of learning space on learning which is to increase student’s engagement, provide a safe learning environment and promote collaboration. The use of technology was seamlessly integrated in some of the lessons showcased such as use of online collaborative tools, online assessment tools, PLDs, Apple Classroom and Google Classroom.

JUNE KP RETREAT “TAKING FLIGHT”

One bright Monday morning, TKGS KPs went on a walk to discover the best version of themselves. Along the way, they referred to their Strengthfinder’s book and saw light at the end of the tunnel. To do well as a KP team, we must step into each other’s shoes and know the strengths and talents of team members. To fully appreciate each other’s talent and learn to how to manage each other’s weaknesses, only then, will we take flight and reach for the skies.

KPs bonding with one another and experiencing how team synergy look like, feel like and sound like as they practise strengths partnership and learn to leverage on the multiple strengths of the team members through walking down Singapore River.

STAFF RETREAT

June Staff Retreat fostered a greater appreciation of the strengths of TKChers to engender a stronger trust and collaboration amongst each other in the spirit of honouring the individual and valuing the collective. A myriad of experiences was planned to enrich team relationships and engender collective ownership as agents of change in living out the school vision and values. The retreat supported the larger intent of positive staff engagement and professional excellence and provided deeper insights into our individual top 5 talent themes in order for us to be at our best to fulfil our professional mission.

The tranquil spaces of Singapore Flyer created the perfect atmosphere for us to revisit our collective team strengths, connect with like-minded colleagues with common strengths and learn how to work with others using our common strengths. This heightened our consciousness in using our top strengths in everyday activities and provided deeper understanding to “honour the individual and value the collective”

NOVEMBER DEPARTMENT RETREAT “FUTURE READY TKCHERS FOR FUTURE READY TKGIANS”

Today, with change happening at a faster pace than ever before, it has become even more pressing for TKchers to build resilience into their educational programme and curricula. Preparation for the unknown demands of the future requires developing our capacities for lifelong learning, adaptability, and openness. In November 2022, different departments explored out of TKGS to be inspired to adopt and apply new ideas in their departments’ work in 2023. Each department created team experiences that enriched team relationships and engendered collective ownership as agents of change in living out the school vision and values. Within the departments, teachers shared and gained ideas on ways to develop innovative ideas and solutions appropriate for our departments / committees. Through these experiences, we have gained deeper insights into WPS 2022 message on ‘Forward-Looking Schools and Future-Ready Students’.

Staff Welfare & Recognition Committee

SWRC organized Staff Bonding activities such as candle making, acrylic painting, barista workshop, sports and games to cater to the different needs of our staff. This year SWRC gave staff the autonomy to decide on their bonding activities. These include ‘chill out’ sessions over food and drinks, sports activities and many others.

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION

Taking the precious opportunity to finally celebrate Teachers’ Day at an external venue together with all TKGS staff after 2 years, the Staff Well-being and Recognition Committee (SWRC) injected the Teachers’ Day Celebration 2022 with a healthy dose of creativity and humour. Held at Concorde Hotel with a scrumptious buffet spread and exciting activities, it was an unforgettable event filled with joy and gratitude that highlighted the strong camaraderie amongst TKGS staff. It was the 1st time we could celebrate outside of school, hence it was no surprise that the energy and good vibes way surpassed even the pre- COVID days.

Everyone loves winning! Indeed, the fresh and exciting lucky dip event that the SWRC introduced this year had element of surprise that everybody loved. At the reception booth, TKGS staff were asked to pick a random capsule that they opened up to redeem their special prize! There were 6 different types of exciting prizes, from useful thermal flasks to essential thumbdrives. Then, TKGS staff immortalized this special celebration at the photobooth which offered fun props that many of us happily posed with.

The theme of this year’s celebration was ‘Safari’ and we encouraged TKGS staff to listen to “the call of the wild” and dress up in their best Safari Outfits! During the ‘Best Dressed’ segment, the fun and exciting performances put on by each table were a great way to showcase their outfits.

The school also rejoiced with the recipients of The Caring Teacher Award 2022. We wrapped up the event with thoughtful and touching Staff Appreciation and Staff Bonding videos that captured the sparkling moments in 2022.

“One of the sparkling moments I had was during the TKGS campfire. The TKGS campfire was a good way to make new friends and to get to know my classmates and the OGLs, who took the initiative to ensure that we were having fun. I am very thankful for that as it made

the campfire even more memorable. I also remember the virtual campfire. It was raining heavily and so we had to carry out the campfire in the hall. That gave me a glimpse of one of the TKGS values, Resilience, in action!”.

“My sparkling moment was the orientation camp. The cohort camp for the sec 2s was very fun, especially the painting of posters. It allowed me to get to know my friends better and work together as a team/class with them. I enjoyed working with the class a lot:) I can create more sparkling moments by engaging and participating actively in the activities the school has planned for us”.

It was very nice to lead them and get to know them. One of the ways I can have more sparkling moments is by being more sociable.” – Natalie, 2E5

“I really enjoyed the cohort camp at the beginning of the year because it allowed me to meet new people and get to know my friends better. I also really liked the activities such as the outdoor cooking, where my group and I got to try making dumplings.”

“I enjoyed the first few days of school during the cohort camp when we had games and activities to do in our groups of 5. Even though we burnt some food during the outdoor cooking, it was still fun.”

TKGLOW!

To promote student mental well-being and student advocacy, the school introduced TKGLOW!. GLOW! stands for: Grow by sharing your interest and passion, Learn something new with an Open Mind and make it a Worthwhile experience!

TKGLOW! gives students the space to explore new passions as each class gets to decide on the type of activities, which range from sports to aesthetics, to participate in. Student Leaders gather input from the student population on their interest, and submit proposed ideas to teachers-in-charge. Students can then choose to take part in craft work like clay sculpting, marbling art, origami, bracelet making, learn to play musical instruments, and dabble in different sports. This structured platform is a form of Student-Initiated Learning and provides students an opportunity to learn new skills and develop 21CC

TK Spirit Week (May)

The TKGS Spirit Week in May was a week when students had the opportunity to take time off from their studies after the tireless preparation for the Mid-Year Examinations.

For the Secondary One students, they went on a learning journey to the National Art Gallery! They explored each level and were amazed to learn things they never knew about their own country, from sustainable living to Singapore’s history. Not only did they gain new knowledge about Singapore, they also enjoyed bonding with friends.

The Secondary Two students learnt basic moves to help protect themselves during the Self-Defense workshop and had fun at Labrador Park and Changi Boardwalk whilst helping to keep Singapore clean.

As for the Secondary Three students, they embarked on an exciting cycling expedition from East Coast Park all the way to Gardens By The Bay. They ended the day by having lunch at Satay By The Bay and reflecting on experiences with the instructors.

The TKGS Spirit Week also featured two concerts celebrating the Tamil New Year and Hari Raya Puasa. It was an eye-opening experience learning about the practices of the different communities through the engaging concerts. What really rounded up Spirit Week well was the last day of school with a “Class Sparkling Moments” segment. Students reflected on their life as a TKGian in the past 6 months and showed gratitude to friends and teachers.

A fun and fruitful TKGS Spirit Week, the activities succeeded in bringing students and staff closer together. Indeed, this year’s TKGS Spirit Week in May was undeniably a success. It was an event that will always be remembered, one that will be etched in everyone’s heart.

Youth Day

Youth Day, a day that celebrates youths!

It was a morning filled with excited buzz in the classrooms. Every student was given the opportunity to design their own pouch. Each class came up with their own theme and thought of designs that would be in line with their chosen theme! There was a variety of interesting and creative themes, from “Out of This World”, “Floral Fantasy” to “Under the Sea” ! Joycelyn from 1E1 even designed her own original bee character that she personalised for our Principal, Ms Chew!

However, the highlight was when everyone was given ice creams! The delicious, sweet treat helped to lift the spirits of the students who dug in with gusto.

Many TKGians were grateful that they had a break from the usual studying and that they got to spend some time with their friends and teachers! Celebrating Youth Day in TKGS was indeed a fun and lively experience.

RACIAL HARMONY DAY

The theme for Racial Harmony Day 2022 was Singapore, Our Multicultural Mosaic. In celebration of our unity in diversity, our students arrived in school dressed in their traditional ethnic costumes, exemplifying the theme for the day. Apart from the vibrant display of costumes, the Sec 4 HML students started the day with their sharing of the culture and traditions of our Chinese, Malay and Indian communities with the school. Their sharing covered areas of interest ranging from food, martial arts to various cultural art forms. The school benefitted much from their sharing as it enhanced our understanding of the culture and common practices of the three main ethnic groups in Singapore.

LEADERS’ INVESTITURE

The school came together to witness the Leaders’ Investiture, an annual event held in celebration of the student leaders from the Prefectorial Board, Class Committee, CCAs and House Committee, as they stepped up to assume new leadership positions and bid farewell, with appreciation, to their seniors who had led the way. The common theme across the speeches shared was the emphasis on servant leadership, and the importance of leading with an impassioned spirit, in service of the school, community and the common good.

SPORTS CARNIVAL

After the Leaders’ Investiture, student leaders led their respective houses and teams to compete in a fun-filled Sports Carnival. This year’s Sports Carnival did not disappoint as the activities catered to both students who are physically active as well as those who are not sports-inclined. Students from the four houses competed in games such as frisbee and football, sprint events as well as traditional games such as hopscotch.

This year, the Halimah House members fought their hearts out and emerged as the overall winning house in the Sports Carnival.

Let’s hope that with the easing of the COVID-19 SMM, we can look forward to a bigger event in 2023!

National Day

Shades of vibrant red and pearly white pleasantly greeted the students as they entered the school. Wherever they looked, there were shades of red and white. Cheerful chatter lightened the mood of the scene, making students excited and energetic for the day’s programme.

The teachers explained the rationale for celebrating National Day, where the main takeaway would be to commemorate the day Singapore permanently gained independence, which was a huge milestone in Singapore’s history.

For the next event, all classes were invited to head to the school hall. A vendor was invited to teach the student cohort how to relay the lyrics of the year’s National Day song, “Stronger Together”, using sign language. Everyone in the audience tried their best to learn the hand movements, including the teachers. Shortly after, some students were invited on stage to perform the song using sign language, causing everyone to erupt in thunderous applause.

The National Day experience was unique and enlightening as it was the first time everyone learnt basic sign language. This experience allowed all to better understand and empathise with individuals with hearing impairment, adding

Sec Four Graduation Day & Grad Nite

As the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end”. The Secondary Four graduation party indeed ended the Secondary Four students’ TKGS journey with a bang. The graduating batch had the time of their lives partying their souls out during the celebration.

In their captivating outfits, the students basked in the atmosphere of the breathtakingly gorgeous school hall, transformed beyond recognition into a posh banquet room decorated with balloons and fancy tableware. This could only happen with the innovative spirit, rethinking and thoughtfulness borne out of the school’s adaptations during the COVID -19 pandemic. The school hall was a spectacular setting for an unforgettable event!

Smiles and tears were the order of the evening as class video montages captured the sparkling moments of their four years in TKGS. The event culminated with the school song sung with sadness and pride, truly marking the end of this memorable journey.

TK Spirit Week (Oct)

The TK Spirit Week in October allowed every student to rest, recharge and have fun with their post-examination activities. This time, different levels were given the opportunity to go out of the school, and out of their comfort zones to try new and different activities with their peers!

For the Secondary One students, one of the key highlights was a learning journey to Little India, Chinatown or Kampong Glam. They learned more about Singapore’s intricate history such as the history of some buildings.

For the Secondary Two students, they went to MOE Labrador Outdoor Adventure Centre for a two-day camp! There were two segments where they could put their outdoor education skills to use – a navigation game and outdoor cooking of ondeh-ondeh! Many also stepped out of their comfort zone for activities like bouldering. At the end of the first night, there was a campfire organised for them! This was the very first physical campfire in two years, which made it very special and fun, especially with all the cheers and songs being played. Khadija Moiz, from class 2E6 who won the ‘Best Camper’ for her class, said that she truly enjoyed herself during the cohort camp at the Labrador campsite this year. Her favourite part of the camp was the cohort campfire as the atmosphere was very lively and energetic.

Secondary One Design Thinking

TKGS+ is an exciting programme for all students in TKGS that offers many opportunities for TKGians to develop skills and values that will better prepare them for the future. By giving Secondary One to Three students opportunities to engage with real-world issues and possible solutions, the programme takes learning outside of the classroom and encourages students to develop connections between what they learn in school and what happens in the world around them.

“As my peers conducted research on climate change and thought of ways to slow down the effects of global warming, they worked in groups to come up with possible solutions such as making solar panels more accessible and affordable for Singaporeans. One group decided to raise awareness and educate the school on how they could play their part through a story. Inspired by stories about villains and heroes, they worked on a storyboard bringing to life; non-energy efficient appliances as villains and energy efficient ones as heroes. It was a blast!”

The highlight of the ‘Code for Fun’ module in Semester Two was applying the basics of coding and using Lego and different types of sensors to build a prototype that could address a problem related to global warming. It was challenging to code accurately but with determination and resilience, us Secondary Ones were able to succeed!”

“These modules have allowed me to develop many invaluable skills such as collaborating with others and solving problems creatively. I’ve also learned how to communicate more confidently and be more open to different ideas and perspectives. I had such an enjoyable time working with my classmates and getting to know them better. All the classes had their delicious ‘reunion breakfast’ together followed by cultural activities. The students were divided into groups to explore different aspects of Chinese culture. One group made delightful Chinese Charms, while others folded origami or wrapped their gifts in elegant handmade paper! The reunion is all about spreading warmth and happiness to our loved ones and people around us. This year, TKGians students decided to create hand-made hampers filled with daily essentials which were sent to the home for the elderly to spread love and to stay connected with the community through the form of gifts. Humanities Day

SECONDARY ONE

Our Secondary One classes visited the popular trio of cultural precincts on the tourist circuit namely Little India, Chinatown and Kampong Glam. Through the learning journeys, the girls were able to learn and appreciate our national heritage and express gratitude for the effort and hard work of our forefathers that have allowed us to be where we are today.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of Thian Hock Teng Temple. So amazing that it is made entirely of wood and that not a single nail was used in the original construction! I am also awed by the determination of Samsui women who did not give up in the face of adversity –this truly resonates with our school value of resilience.

What stood out for me during my class’s visit to Kampong Glam was our site visit to Madrasah Alsagoff. The school was built using funds contributed by famous Arab philanthropists and I felt that it is a prime example of how immigrants who came expressed compassion and warmth with a desire to improve the well-being of the local community despite coming from different parts of the world.

SECONDARY TWO

Theme: Feed the Future- The journey from farm to fork, the Science of Feeding the World.

On 25 October, the Secondary Two cohort visited the Kok Fah Technology Farm. The aim of the learning journey was to enable our students to better appreciate the use of advanced technology to increase farming yields in land scarce Singapore, with a link to food security.

Here’s what some students had to say about the learning journey:

The seeding machine, vacuum cooler and hydroponics area were captivating as such advancements help to reduce wastage and ensure consistency throughout the farming process. From this, we were able to deepen our understanding, with an experience outside of class, of the methods used for sustainable farming in Singapore.

I really enjoyed the programme but I think the part where we get to touch the aloe vera and smell the different herbs was most enjoyable.

I enjoyed the tasting session and the seeding machine tour. I found this interesting as I got an opportunity to explore more about how advancements in technology can help us to be more efficient in the planting process, by saving time and manpower.

Overall, it was a unique eye-opening experience for all students as they now have a better appreciation of how Singapore can maximize land space to build up our country’s capacity to meet 30% of our nutritional needs by 2030.

The landmarks/ tours are important to allow the younger generation to understand and gain knowledge about Singapore’s culture and history. We will be able to feel a sense of belonging and identity of this country we call home.

Thankfully, the Singapore River has become a lot cleaner than before but it still remains part of our heritage as it contains memories from olden-day Singapore. For example, the sculptures show how coolies and traders used the Singapore River as a means of work such as trading and transportation.

This included visiting the Singapore River, a thriving hub of economic activity that enabled the nation’s development and places that marked our nation’s birth such as the Padang, City Hall and even Sir Stamford Raffles’s landing place

Applied Learning Modules (ApLMs) are elective courses in applied areas which are developed by the Polytechnics. These electives give students the opportunity to enjoy learning by seeing the relevance of what they learn and applying the learning to authentic learning contexts, helping them discover their strengths and interests in the process. Students are provided with opportunities to construct meaning for themselves through hands-on and practical learning activities.

ApLM also allow students to experience life in the Polytechnics and provide opportunities for Education and Career Guidance (ECG) by exposing them to possible post-secondary courses and careers.

In Semester 2, the Art Club members learnt Japanese Oshibana, the art of using pressed flowers and leaves in various art forms. We learnt how to create 3D works using the pressed flowers in different mediums such as UVresin and water-based resin We were taught how to incorporate different effects by choosing the type of pigments, colours and terrazzo We also learnt how to make our own dried pressed flowers using naturally heated wooden boards

What do our members love about Art Club?

Art Club gives me the chance to attend workshops and learn new techniques for drawing or printing techniques One of my favourite moments was sculpting the shape of the plastic bottles using a cast during SYF At first, it was hard as I realised I had cast something and I could not get it out So I spent the rest of the lesson trying to break the cast but to no avail However, after that, I managed to get a decent bottle cap cast and a Yakut bottle I had brought I had never done this before so it was a new and incredibly unique experience The casting only required one material, and our art mentor taught us how to do it so that we could do it at home any time when we were free

Achievement - NLB HSI Challenge Bronze Award

The Library Service Board is committed to promoting a strong reading culture in the school while supporting the Instructional Programme to meet the teaching and learning needs of the scho ol We forge bonds with one another by sharing our love for reading and writing.

We kicked off the year with the Secondary One Orientation followed by our thematic displays on Chinese New Year, Fantasy fiction, and Science fiction While creating these displays, our student librarians learnt more about Chinese culture and different genres, fostering teamwork and friendships amongst ourselves.

We also participated in virtual workshops conducted by the National Library Board (NLB), such as Mapping the World and Combating Fake News Following the workshops, we worked in groups to create cartoons to share with our schoolmates tips on the S U R E steps (Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate). Students found the Mapping the World workshop fascinating as they learned much about the art and histo ry of Cartography.

A team of secondary twos also took part in the NLB Historical Scene Investigation Challenge (H S I ) 2022, where they learnt and investigated the historical significance of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore (1942 to 1945) and created a video and write up about their findings.

We also created our very own newsletter. This newsletter would be our way of sharing what the Librar y Board does, and also promoting books, authors and genres. Through this, we hope to support a strong reading culture in our school

Something About Us

Badminton is a sport that demands good fitness and mental strength. A badminton player’s speed, stamina, agility, and strength as well mental strength is crucial and it is put to the test on court.

A lot of patience, determination as well as perseverance is needed in order to be able to master the sport. Training is often strenuous but enriching as it allows us to be able to perfect our current skills.

The strenuous training allowed us to bond as a team, help each other out to brush up on our individual skills and learn the importance of teamwork which we can use to achieve our goals as a team.

Floorball CCA Our Best Performance So Far

‘B’ Division - 2022 was a fantastic year for the floorball team. Before the Covid-19 measures were eased, we had to train in small groups of five in order to maintain social distancing. As we ventured into the new year, these measures were relaxed and intermingling was once again allowed. Our bond as a team was further strengthened because we were no longer confined to the same small groups as before. We could make full use of the floorball court, and for the first time in two years, the team could enjoy playing a proper 5 v 5 match.

In April, our highly anticipated National School Games (NSG) tournament commenced. Despite not having played competitively for two years, each and every one of us had put in our very best to make TKGS proud. Our experience in these NSG games not only strengthened our bond, but it also provided us the opportunity to learn to work well together and trust one another. Coming in amongst the top 8 ‘B’ Division teams in Singapore, we are proud of our team and we will strive to be stronger in 2023!

#DreamBigWorkHard

‘C’ Division - In January, the Sec 2s extended a warm welcome to our new Sec 1 teammates as we began training together. During training sessions, we continuously pushed one another to give our best during our preparations for the National School Games (NSG) tournament.

In 2022, the ‘C’ Division team almost secured a place in the semi-finals in the NSG. Although we had hoped to have gone further in the tournament, we were still proud of ourselves for going this far. We worked hard and overcame many setbacks during our tournament period.

In 2023, we hope to make TKGS proud and secure a top 4 placing!

our favourite moments :) june hols carnival!

about us

2022 was a pretty exciting year for all of us as we could finally play in the national school games (nsg) after a twoyear hiatus granted, we went through much success and failure, but most importantly, we ended up growing together as a team and forging irreplaceable memories with one another.

we are also tremendously proud of our c division's hard work, and hope the next batch will do just as well moreover, other tournaments have started once more, allowing us to spend more time on court with other players!

overall, we have managed to mature as one team and are excited for more matches to come; and also, of course, being super set on our future goals for nsg 2023

SAILING

Sailing fosters a wide range of physical and mental abilities such as physical fitness, self confidence, alertness and focus. Trainings and participation in regattas have helped us to also develop our agility, concentration and communication skills. A sailor faces challenges in every training and regatta, be it rigging up our boats into and out of the sea, or improving our sailing techniques under the scorching sun. However, these challenges enable us to constantly improve our physical and mental attributes.

Training sessions are often physically and mentally draining, but because we are doing it together as a group, it has allowed us to bond together as a team. We are always looking out for our team mates, giving constant encouragements and always lending a helping hand whenever a team mate is in need. This has created a strong team spirit between us in the CCA.

We spend a lot of time training together out at sea, guided by our coaches and constantly practicing new techniques. I love it that we are very bonded as a team, and every training session is enjoyable and fulfilling.

-Jazelle Lip (2E4)

Some of my most treasured memories during training include helping each other to pull the boats up, and getting to interact with each other as a team.

Won 4th place in 'B' Division Softball NSG as a team after a 2year hiatus due to the pandemic! During the process, everyone of us learnt to depend on one another and bonded deeply through the time spent together With the support from our coaches and teachers, we managed to bring glory to the school.

For 'C' Division, we started on a rough patch but through the competitions, we have learnt what we needed to improve on and got to experience our first competition together as a team Although we did not get our desired reuslt, we aim to improve and do better in the future!

Everyone was happy after a successful CCA Promotion Day that left us with a larger number of sign-ups than we initially expected

What did we enjoy about CCA in 2022?

There are too many favourable moments of ours throughout the year 2022. However if we were to narrow it down to some of the most enjoyable and unforgettable moments, these are some that we can state. Most of us enjoyed bonding with our teammates during water breaks, ice-breaker games, bus rides to Victoria Junior College, and of course, learning and improving our tennis skills during training.

We also got to chit-chat with one another, and get to know each other better during break times and bus rides

Throughout the year, we have learnt to be more resilient while working as a team. Moreover, improving ourselves each day that we had together.

My favourite moment during CCA was when I had the opportunity to bond with my seniors I have gotten much closer and comfortable with them after all the bonding sessions and trainings together! I also enjoyed the time we had during NSG as we got to strengthen our bonds through support for each other Hitaishi, 1E3

I definitely enjoyed improving in the sport itself and getting to train with several friends at training Although training sessions may be tough and tiring, it was definitely worth it as these tough moments were much more bearable and enjoyable with my friends and coaches. Clarissa, 3E2

Favourite moments and what we love most about CCA in 2022:

Most of our favourite moments were the B division and C division National School Games (NSG), where we got to play matches with other schools, gain more experience in match play, and most importantly learn from the experience and improve in our skills and team spirit.

Some of us also enjoyed sessions that the Captains have planned, such as the bonding session set out during the June holidays at East Coast Park. We went to the beach to have a potluck, where each of us had to bring a snack or a drink to share with the rest of the team, while eating and chatting with one another, being able to get to know each other better Another moment was when there was a huge downpour in the middle of training. Despite us being down on our luck that day, we turned this into a positive experience by playing captain's ball. We all had a memorable time playing the game, while working together to score each point with great determination!

Something that I treasure most about our CCA is that there is a close bond between the different levels and divisions. It was so wonderful to see the seniors and juniors bond comfortably with one another, talking to each other and further strengthening our team bonds. Sharleez, 3E3

I think my favourite moment would definitely be the NSG competitions

During NSG, I got to know my teammates better through bonding with each other through these tough times, especially with the seniors. Additionally, CCA trainings have allowed me to foster new friendships with my juniors :) Hence, CCA is something I am really grateful for. Jada, 3E3

What We do in our cca

Girl Guides provides opportunities for girls to strengthen our skills in a supportive environment. Additionally, our CCA allows us to hone our leadership abilities by allowing us to take the lead in Unit and Patrol activities, learning how to organise events, teaching each other new things and participating in worldwide or national events.

What did you enjoy about girl guides in 2022?

"I got to experience a lot of different activities like tentage, outdoor cooking, etc. I think my favourite moment was during the March Camp. I got to bond with my patrol members, learn new skills, and had a lot of fun "

- Megan Goh, 1E1

"March camp is one of the most enjoyable moments for me as it allows me to really bond with all the other guides in different levels and patrols! I also got to do so many activities that I usually wouldn't get to do in normal sessions such as water games! "

- Sophia Kwek, 3E4

Summary of NPCC's 2022:

We have grown in 2022 while achieving great accomplishments as a unit Not only did we forge a precious bond amongst our cadets but we also acquire new knowledge and skills from the NPCC module while earning proficiency badges along the way.

Many experiences were garnered through the events and courses throughout the year Acquiring skills such as teamwork and having opportunities to hone our leadership skills, were made possible with the easing of the Safe Management Measures Being part of the events such as the NPCC Founding Day celebration, National Day Parade and others in our own squad, allowed us to achieve sparkling moments where memories were made and our skills were improved. Furthermore, we were able to expand our learning and deepen the NPCC values of resilience, integrity, service and excellence by going to places outside of the school’s compound.

"No Pain No Gain, No Guts No Glory” Our NPCC motto was reflected by the hard work and participation of the cadets which enabled us to achieve a fulfilling, enriching and pleasurable CCA experience. The valuable life lessons and values we uphold are shaped through NPCC and we are honoured to be part of the unit.

In 2022, we finally resumed face-to-face CCA sessions in larger groups, as the safe management measures due to Covid-19 had eased immensely It was an exciting year as we were able to have more meaningul interactions, and dance alongside one another again. We are also grateful to have our new coach, Ms June, join Dance Club! Ms June has provided many opportunities for us to express ourselves through dance, and showcase our individuality through different dance styles during CCA sessions. This has allowed for us to learn from one another, as we gain more exposure to dance and its many forms.

This year, TKGS Dancers were also involved in the school's 69th Speech & Prize-Giving Ceremony, where our dancers were selected to perform for our School Leaders, Guests, and our Guest of Honour, Mr Lim Biow Chuan, Adviser to Mountbatten Grassroots Organisations Despite the limited and short period of time that the dancers were given to prepare for their performance, they were able to execute it perfectly, and it further elevated the celebratory mood of the school's opening ceremony We feel a sense of pride as we are able to represent our school and showcase our talents by doing what we enjoy; Dance

Being in TKGS Dance, we have all developed the love for dance and it is now a significant part of our lives. The constant support and guidance that we receive from our Teachers-in-Charge and our coach has helped us better ourselves as dancers, as they have given us the courage that we need to strive to improve and perform to the best of our abilities.

Drama Club

I appreciate our CCA a lot as it has taught me how to become a better actress and has instilled more confidence in me especially through the “We Tried Theatre!” where we were allowed to create/choose any script to act out. ~Harsha

Drama Club celebrates the achievements and contributions of fellow members through the 'Thespian of the Month Award (ToM). With the help of this award, club members will be inspired to take charge and become more accountable and disciplined.

With TOM, it encourages drama club to show appreciation for good values displayed by members which can also inspire others as well - Napat 3/6

Thespian Of The Month

Drama enables us to be spontaneous and express our emotions. It gives us a way to express our creativity and provides us with opportunities to explore and advance our abilities and interests. It is a way for us to broaden our creative horizons. Drama also encourages team building while enhancing our selfdiscipline and confidence.

TKGS Drama Club aims to be a platform for students to improve diction and confidence levels, empowering them to use these skills beyond their secondary school lives. Moreover, the warm and welcoming environment during CCA sessions ensure a safe and inclusive space for all members.
