Our Students

Principal’s Message 2021 began with a great sense of hope and anticipation. We were hopeful that we could gradually ease back to normalcy - albeit a new one - and resume activities that would provide meaningful learning experiences for Bartleyans. However, as the national Covid-19 situation evolved, so too did our responses, as we prioritised the safety and well-being of the school community. That said, while we had to make changes to the form of our activites, we kept to their intent and spirit so that we could continue to provide a fulfilling school experience that would develop Bartleyans to be ‘Leaders for Others, Learners for Life.’ Amongst others, we had our Sec 1 Orientation, CCA Open House, celebrated the arrival of the Year of the Ox through an online concert, held a modified Bartley Road Run, organised a food donation drive, and carried out our signature Experiential Learning Week to bring learning to life.

In teaching and learning, we implemented our Personal Digital Learning Programme, and were able to equip all Sec 1 to 3 students with personal learning devices. I am happy to note that students have been using the devices meaningfully in and out of classes to collaborate, learn new skills, deepen their understanding in the subject matter, and develop themselves into self-directed learners with the help of their teachers. Bartleyans also had other exciting learning opportunities planned and implemented by their teachers such as ELation and Humanities Week, the Mother Tongue Language Fortnight, as well as the Applied Learning Module @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Elective Module at ITE. Despite the many challenges posed by Covid-19, Bartleyans continued to be the best that they could be. This was evident in their preparation for the SYF Arts Presentations where our performing arts groups did very well. Bartleyans also excelled at national competitons such as Destination Imagination where we emerged first, and the Ignite Skills Challenge where we achieved 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes. To cap it off, our Sepak Takraw ‘B’ Boys kept the Bartley flag flying high when they achieved 2nd place in the national inter-school competiton.

A fundamental aspect of character is having the courage to try, to overcome challenges and to possess a deep sense of optimism, confidence and self-belief. Our beliefs affect the way we see ourselves; they affect the choices we make, the quality of our work and all our relationships. At the start of the school year, we chose a simple phrase to guide us in this quest for self-improvement.

‘Do Better, Be Better’ was the school’s theme for the year. This theme exhorted Bartleyans to be bold and ambitious, to learn and to grow, to have faith in themselves, and to strive and realise their fullest potential. It was also a rallying call for Bartleyans to take ownership of their lives and to realise that their destiny is in their own hands. I am heartened that Bartleyans have risen to this challenge. They have shown tremendous courage, strength of character and a strong belief that they can achieve what they have set out to do. I would like all Bartleyans to continue to stay positive and to challenge themselves to always Do Better and Be Better in all aspects of their lives.

In closing, I would like to share a quote by acclaimed American poet Maya Angelou: Do the best you can until you know better.

Dear Bartleyans, Many recollections of our encounters run through my mind as I pen down my thoughts. Some bitter, some sweet… More importantly, through the interactions we have had, both you and I have grown together in one big Bartley family. As we learn from our failures (which are as important as our successes), the experiences we have gained thus far are irreplaceable and will certainly guide us in our life’s journey to do better and be wiser each time.

Embarking on the next phase of life, we must continue to believe in ourselves, be determined to carry out our endeavours and persevere to accomplish what we have set out to do!
