Support-A-Child drive has many takers

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURGH, IL -- The Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA) of Chicago Chapter and Manav Seva Mandir on September 10 organized a fund-raiser in the form of a ‘Support-A-Child ‘Krishna Priya’ dinner and live performances at the Mandir in Bensenville, IL. More than 300 people, including community leaders, from Chicagoland area participated in the program which was inaugurated by Nimesh Jani (Village Trustee of Schaumburg Township) by lighting of the traditional lamp. He was joined by Hetal Patel (VHPA Child Support Coordinator), Raju Chauhan ( president of Manav Seva Mandir), Jitendra Digwarker (Supporter of Child Cause), Sanjay Shah ( VHPA Child Supporter Coordinators), Harendra Mangrola ( president, Gayatri Mandir), Dr. Sham Sheth ( VHPA Chicago Chapter president) and Hari Patel (president of Bhartiya Senior Citizens Of Chicago). VHPA’s Nirav Patel spoke about the Parishad’s activities in America after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message

Chicago Chapter, appealed to people to back the ‘Support-A-Child’ which, he said, provides quality education, food, shelter and healthcare to homeless boy and girls. “Donation of just $250 a year can make a difference in the life of an underprivileged child as he will be provided with boarding, lodging, education and moral values. In 3 hours, some 130 donors came forward to support the noble cause. VHPA’s Sanjay Shah thanked donors, supporters and volunteers for the success of the program for which Master of Ceremony was Yashasvani Desai.

Durga puja, Navaratri at Bharat Sevashram BY A STAFF WRITER URORA, IL -- Swami Mukundananda is the resident monk of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS), Aurora in Chicago. For the past 25 years, the monastery invites everyone to attend all celebrations for free, including the five-day-long Sharodiya Durga Puja and Navaratri at its Aurora monastery. During Durga puja, the temple is filled with devotees praying, chanting of Sri Sri Chandi path, and sharing offerings together to meditate on the glory of the ultimate mother goddess Durga. In keeping with its motto “In Service to Humanity” of the international order of monks, the monastery, a non-profit organization registered with the State of Illinois, welcomes everybody of any faith, race and nationality.

BY A STAFF WRITER EMONT, IL -- On September 17, delightful and captivating Bharatanatyam dancers graced the stage at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in Lemont to present a new body of work in honor of the 20th anniversary of the award-winning Nrithyanjali School of Dance based in Bolingbrook. Through powerful, deeply moving and visually stunning numbers, the program called “Natya Nayaki” captured the emotional and physical journey of an artist and her dynamic relationship with her dance teacher. Beautifully choreographed by dancers Anagha Sundararajan, Sindhura Pisipati, and Veena Priya Vellookunnel, the program honored two decades of magnificent work in this celebrated dance form by renowned artistic director and educator, Sushmita Arunkumar. The dancers, all of whom had received years of training under Arunkumar as well as garnering accolades for performances and competitions throughout the Midwest, included: Anagha Sundararajan, Sindhura Pisipati, Veena Priya Vellookunnel, Regina Thomas, Seona Abraham, Sherin Ellickal, Ammu Jacob, Jasmine Jacob, Hemani Nagam, Kavya Vedurmudi, Mahati Avineni, Anupama Udayakumar, Samhitha Rai, Apsara Attavane, Kavya Ramasharma, Simron Sahoo, Lajvanthi Sudhakar, Sharon Thomas, Sherin Thomas, Divya Chirayil, Jenitha Jomi, Shana Abraham and Adithi Arunkumar.

Obama names Indian to serve on federal court BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- President Barack Obama on September 13 nominated Diane Gujarati to serve on the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York. “I am pleased to nominate Diane Gujarati to serve on the United States District Court bench,” said Obama. “I am confident she will serve the American people with distinction.” Gujarati must now be confirmed by the US Senate. The Indian American is Obama’s second nomination of a South Asian American to a federal bench this month. Last week, the White House announced Obama’s nomination of Latham and Watkins attorney Abid Qureshi to serve on the US District Court for the District of Columbia. If Qureshi is confirmed by the US Senate, he would be the first Muslim American and the first Pakistani American to serve on a federal court. The White House announcement notes that Gujarati has been deputy chief of the criminal division of the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York since 2012, and she has served as an assistant US attorney in the Criminal Division since 1999. Prior to joining the US Attorney’s Office, Gujarati was an associate in the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP from 1996 to 1999. She began her legal career as a law clerk to the John M. Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1995 to 1996. Gujarati is the daughter of Damodar M. Gujarati, a professor of economics at the US Military Academy at West Point. Her father received his M.Com degree from the University of Bombay in 1960, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1965. Her mother is Ruth Pincus Gujarati. Gujarati also serves on the Board of Directors for the Asian American Bar Association of New York. She has been a member of AABANY since 2013 and has volunteered on its women and judiciary committees. Her profile on the AABANY site notes that the attorney has extensive federal investigative, trial, and appellate experience, and significant experience in the area of government ethics. The South Asian Bar Association (SABA) lauded the White House announcement.
