Our Cover Woman, Sarah Forgany, learned the hard way that every day is a gift, and she uses that lesson to ask herself, "Why am I here?" After spending a month in a hospital due to heart failure, Sarah is on a mission to teach young women the importance of prioritizing their health and reducing stress. I know you'll be inspired by Sarah's take-charge attitude and genuine interest in people, helping make her the successful KENS5 anchor she is today.

If you've ever wondered what "DreamWeek" is all about, our Feature story introduces three women who play an integral part in this annual summit created to foster civic engagement in our community. Also, in this issue, we introduce the founder of DreamWeek, Shokare "Sho" Nakpodia. Sho shares his journey, filled with hardships and successes, that led him to San Antonio and what inspired him to create an event where people can engage in meaningful conversations and celebrate diversity. I hope these stories inspire you to use your unique gifts and talents to take action and make our community a better place.

It doesn't need to be perfect, but it is.

Sarah Forgany

By Dawn Robinette, APR | Photography by Jennifer Denton

Delivering the news with professionalism, warmth, and authenticity for 15 years in San Antonio, KENS-5 anchor Sarah Forgany is a trusted voice, and a familiar face viewers welcome into their home at noon, 4 and 5 p.m.

But being a reporter is not what she had in mind as a career. It’s not even what she planned for in college.

“I think of it as fate now, but it was nothing I had planned for or ever saw myself doing. But looking back, I truly think I was meant to do this job. I was looking through all the majors and minors that I felt suited my personality. When I came across media production, it caught my attention. I told my dad I wanted to give it a try. He said, ‘Try whatever you want as long as you give it 100%. Whatever you do, if you give it your all and more, you will succeed.’”

She took that guidance to heart, diving into her classes, landing an internship, and even working for free to gain experience, but behind the scenes. Then as she was editing stories for reporters, she sometimes wanted to retell the story her own way.

She asked her manager for permission to go out in the field to see what reporting was like – for free and on her own time. “I would do my own interviews and come back and write my own stories. But I still lacked confidence in myself. I didn't know if I was on-air ready.”

The photographers who worked with her knew better and urged her to try. “Having people like that around you that support you is so important because sometimes the people around you can see in you what you can't see in yourself because you are holding yourself back.”

That experience fuels the advice she gives to others. “Be open to honest criticism. Don't ask the people who will tell you that you're great all the time – ask the ones who will say you're doing this well, but here's something else you can work on that will propel you even further and help you grow. When you are honest with yourself and push yourself to improve, it will help you flourish and bring out your best.”

She began reporting in Lafayette, Louisiana and was then offered the opportunity to anchor the weekend news. She wasn’t sure if it was the right fit but said yes. “When God puts something in your way, and it's meant for you, it's amazing what you can find out about yourself when you push yourself to do something out of your comfort zone.”

And that skill set she learned during her years working in production? “It makes me a stronger reporter and news anchor. I can pick up a camera and shoot my own story. I can edit my own video.”

Born in Cairo, Egypt, the Houston-raised Forgany has been part of the KENS-5 team first as a reporter, then as an anchor, for 15 years. “San Antonio is a very different market. The people here feel like they are family. It's a large city but a tight-knit community, and it feels like that. I feel like everybody knows everybody. Everybody is a part of you. And that truly amazes me because you don't have that in other markets. It's a very special thing to have, and I’m grateful for it.

"I often ask myself that question. Why am I here on this earth? What talents has God given me? What blessings do I have, and how can I utilize these gifts to help someone?"

“Being a people person is what I think has made me successful. It comes from the bottom of my heart. I love people. I love to be around people. I love to get to know people. I think people feel it when you're genuine. They know I'm genuine. They know I care.”

That inspires her work. “When I meet someone and tell their story, it's not just a story. I put all my effort into trying to make sure this is something that really connects with people. I always try to reach for the heart. To me, that's so incredibly important because you can give all the facts in the world – but if you don't show that human element, that human side, and connect with someone, reach in, and make them feel what you felt… that’s my goal after I interview someone. Whatever I felt when I was talking to these people, how can I portray that and put it

down on paper and relay that story in a way that the viewer can feel what I felt when I met these people?”

Whether it’s moderating high-profile political debates like the 2018 debate between Beto O’Rourke and Senator Ted Cruz, traveling to Haiti to report on the devasting earthquake, or sharing stories of San Antonians working to help others – or those who need help themselves –she puts her heart into her work. “My favorite stories are ones that inspire viewers to join together to help someone. When someone gets help after a story airs, it's incredibly rewarding to see those people happy again.”

After 13 years anchoring the KENS-5 morning newscast, Forgany was named co-anchor of the 12 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts last fall.

“The switch allows me to take better care of my health and family,” she explains. “My health is now the most important because I need to be here for my 3-year-old daughter and my family. If you don't have health, you have nothing. I learned that lesson sitting in a hospital bed for a month straight.”

That hospital stay came on after she suffered heart failure, diagnosed as broken heart syndrome, following a minor surgical procedure. She was placed on a ventilator, and doctors weren’t sure she’d survive. “It was shocking and transformative. I have no history of heart disease, and to this day, doctors say they can't find a problem with my heart.”

She wants others to realize it can happen to anyone and is working with the American Heart Association to help raise awareness. “If I could just guide one person and have them switch their mindset to look at their lifestyle and truly look at, are they at peace? Are they happy? Are they healthy? What do they need to do to change? Your mental health, your physical health, all of it. And the younger girls, especially, because I'm not old, and I've never had heart problems. I never thought I would have a sudden heart problem from stress. When the doctor said stress, I was confused. What do you mean? But I'm not that stressed.

“I was doing so much, my personal life, my work life, my hours, extracurriculars, things that I enjoyed and loved, and I put on myself but didn't realize that that plus dealing with some other small health issues, combined, it all adds up. It can happen so quickly.

“It has changed how I look at the world every day. As I'm doing things, the thought will cross my mind that today might be my last day. It makes me appreciate everything that is around me. I can't believe that I'm here. I can't believe that I'm holding my daughter. I can't believe that I'm with my family. My perception of the things around me has changed because I never know when that might happen again. And not just that, but anything. None of us know what might happen.”

Forgany loves spending time with her family and prefers quiet time together. “We're not high maintenance at all. Home and Netflix! To me, that's the best weekend ever.”

But don’t think she’s always a homebody. A passionate traveler, she’s been to more than 40 countries and plans 2-3 extensive trips a year. She lived in Cairo until she was 10, and she’s also fluent in Arabic.

Her health scare reaffirmed her strong love of her family and her faith. “Put God first, family second, and find your purpose. I often ask myself that question. Why am I here on this earth? What talents has God given me? What blessings do I have, and how can I utilize these gifts to help someone? We are all connected in one way: that community is truly better when people join together. And what goes around comes around.

“Today, you help. Tomorrow, you will need help, and someone will be there to lend you a hand when you do.”

DreamWeek: Inspiring Change Through History, Art, and Music

From preserving African American history to capturing global stories through photography and championing equality through music, the stories of Deborah Omowale Jarmon, Sarah Brooke Lyons, and Golazin (Gola) Memar Ardestani reveal the power of passion and making a difference in our community by actively teaching others to look at things differently and challenging conventions. While their journeys are unique, they have one thing in common: They are intended to motivate people to take action to make our community a better place.

Photography by David Teran

DEBORAH OMOWALE JARMON

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Deborah reflects on a childhood filled with cultural exploration, thanks to her parents. “My dad worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and my mom, though trained as a teacher in Alabama, faced limitations from Jim Crow laws and became a domestic worker. Together, they exposed me to diverse experiences through travel, museums, and history.”

Her journey to San Antonio followed a storied career as an air traffic controller. “After 27 years with the federal government, retiring allowed me to pursue my passion for building community,” she says. “I moved to San Antonio 12 years ago to be with my youngest son and five grandchildren.” That passion led her to open a bed and breakfast in San Antonio’s King William neighborhood, a place she describes as central to her immersion in the local community. “We hosted Thanksgiving dinners for neighbors and even service members—people who might not have had a place to go.”

Her commitment to community also extended to DreamWeek, a citywide summit fostering civic engagement. “My first experience with DreamWeek was in 2013, hosting an event at the bed and breakfast,” she recalls. “Since then, I’ve been involved every year in some way. It’s an incredible platform for learning about and connecting with the community.”

Today, as Chief Executive Officer of the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM), she channels that commitment into preserving and sharing African American history. “Our

mission is to collect, preserve, and share the cultural heritage of African descendants in San Antonio and the Southwest,” she explains. “Our team is young, diverse, and deeply dedicated to uncovering and sharing these often-buried stories.”

The work at SAAACAM involves collaboration across cultural boundaries. “We work with American Indian and Mexican American historians to tell a complete story of San Antonio’s history,” she notes. “When people think of the Canary Islanders, for example, they often don’t realize their African and indigenous connections. We aim to tell these full, interconnected histories.”

The organization is focused on opening its new space in the Kress Building in 2026. “We’re designing thematic and immersive exhibits, focusing on transformation, persistence, and healing,” she shares. "We want visitors to leave inspired—to return and make a difference in their communities.”

For her, the work is deeply personal. “I think about my ten grandchildren and their future. They must see themselves in history as resilient, creative, and essential to the fabric of this country.” DreamWeek launches with a gala for SAAACAM this year.

In all her endeavors, she remains a community builder at heart. “Whether as an air traffic controller, a DreamWeek organizer, or at SAAACAM, the goal has always been the same: to leave a space better than I found it,” she reflects.

SARAH BROOKE LYONS

For Sarah Brooke Lyons, life has been a dynamic journey of adaptability, creativity, and service. Over the past two decades, she has transitioned from a single mother pursuing a teaching degree to a successful photographer who captures moments and tells stories worldwide. Her motivation has always been to be a great mother.

“I was a single mom raising my daughter alone for the last 20 years,” Sarah recalls. “When she was about three, I went back to school to get a degree in education, hoping for a career that would align with her schedule.” Armed with an associate degree in photography, Sarah started a small photography business while completing her studies. By the time she graduated, her photography work had taken off, offering her financial stability and the flexibility to be present in her daughter’s life. “Photography sustained me through raising her,” Sarah explains. “It allowed me to be at her events, take her to school, and pick her up. That flexibility was incredibly important to me.”

While Sarah began her photography to support her family, it evolved into a platform for global outreach and storytelling. She has documented mission trips to West Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Alaska, and Guatemala. “My role is twofold: participating in the missionary work and capturing the stories through my camera,” she says.

Her photography has raised awareness for medical missions, water well projects, and community-building efforts. “Through my photos, I hope to inspire others to embrace

different cultures and, maybe, embark on their own journeys,” she says. "Good photography requires observing human nature and having the patience to capture authentic moments."

Closer to home, Sarah has been a dedicated collaborator with DreamWeek, an annual summit celebrating diversity and inclusion. Since its inception, she has documented the event, which features panels, art exhibitions, and cultural celebrations. “DreamWeek showcases how unique and diverse San Antonio is,” she says. "I love capturing the stories of different groups and preserving those moments as part of our community’s history.”

Despite her busy schedule, Sarah maintains balance through gratitude and intentionality. “I’ve learned to focus on one thing at a time,” she says. “Staying present and being grateful for the opportunities I’ve had helps me manage everything—whether it’s being a mom, a photographer, or a volunteer.”

Sarah’s photography business, Lyons Photo Company, continues to thrive. It specializes in headshots, marketing, and advertising. Yet her most fulfilling work remains in the moments she captures—whether on a quiet snow walk with her daughter in Boerne or during an impromptu photo shoot in rural West Africa.

“I feel so blessed to share these stories,” Sarah says. “They’re a reflection of the beauty and diversity of humanity. Photography isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about showing the world through a lens of understanding and hope.”

GOLAZIN MEMAR ARDESTANI

While Deborah and Sarah have found unique ways to make a difference, so has Gola, a dynamic artist whose story spans continents and cultures and an enduring commitment to freedom and equality.

"Music is a powerful medium; it can move hearts, change behavior, and unite people," says Golazin, known internationally as Gola. Born in Iran, Gola's love for singing, dancing, and performing was nurtured despite cultural barriers. In her motherland, women face severe restrictions on public performances, prohibiting solo singing or recording music.

These obstacles only fueled her determination. "I was always told I couldn’t do it, that I couldn’t sing or perform," Gola explains. "That only strengthened my drive to pursue it. If something is so powerful that they forbid us from doing it, then it’s certainly worth fighting for."

Determined to pursue her dreams, Gola studied music performance and acting in Iran. But as her aspirations grew, so did her need for freedom. Eventually, she left her home country.

Her pursuit of artistic and personal freedom first took her to London, where she studied music psychology. This study revealed the subtle but profound ways music influences human behavior. "I discovered how music can subtly yet powerfully influence people's decisions," she says.

Seeking even greater liberty and opportunities, she left London for the U.S. to live the American dream—a land of freedom and love where no dream is left unfulfilled. She moved to San Antonio, drawn by its unique blend of Texan and Mexican culture, which she has always admired, particularly in music.

The transition was initially challenging, marked by loneliness and the uncertainties of immigration.

But San Antonio’s natural beauty and welcoming spirit soon helped her find a sense of belonging.

"San Antonio became my creative hub," she shares. "It gave me the freedom to complete my first album, a protest album called Change, and to connect with a community that shares my values, a community I call family now.”

For Gola, music is more than a passion; it is a mission. Her songs, written in Farsi and English, champion equality, freedom, and unity. Drawing from her experiences in Iran and her life abroad, Gola uses her voice to advocate for change. "Music can unite us, help us understand that no matter our differences—religion, race, or background—we are all human," she says. "It’s a way to start conversations, break down barriers, and remind people that we have more in common than we think."

This philosophy resonates deeply in her performances, such as her moving rendition of the U.S. National Anthem at San Antonio’s Mayor’s Ball, accompanied by an all-women mariachi band. "That moment was so powerful," she recalls. "It reflected the unity and cultural diversity that San Antonio represents."

Speaking about DreamWeek this year, Gola says, “In a world that feels increasingly divided, it’s crucial to remember that we are neighbors— bound by our shared humanity, regardless of borders, beliefs, or background—and it’s through connection and collaboration that we can navigate these challenging times together.”

Whether telling the story of the African Diaspora, communicating humanity through imagery, or inspiring people through song, there is no single way to influence a community to action. Each woman does so uniquely, perpetuating the idea that one person can make a difference.

Abby Colbath

The Ministry of Retail

By Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran

Being your authentic self and sharing personal stories with transparency is rare. Abby Colbath, a San Antonio native, is the exception. She never dreamed of her future journey as a business owner or as someone who would struggle so much with infertility and loss. Her story is about living authentically, embracing vulnerability, and finding purpose in the intersection of grief and joy.

After graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in communications, Abby found herself uncertain about her future until she realized that opening a boutique would combine her passions for creativity, fashion, and ministry. Abby points out that as a service provider, people naturally share their lives with them. "As someone who worked retail, I observed that people shop because they're happy or sad or shopping for a funeral or other pivotal occasion," she says. This astute observation led her to look at the experience of service in her boutique as a ministry.

In 2019, she launched her online shop from her home with a small investment and a lot of grit. She juggled part-time jobs, pop-up shops, and online sales. She developed a community of loyal and engaged customers, but her life wasn't just about building a business but a legacy bigger than herself. Around the same time, she and her husband began their infertility journey.

Abby shared her experience of infertility openly on her boutique's social media account. This act of authenticity resonated deeply with others. It unexpectedly sparked the beginnings of a community of merchants and consumers who loved her clothing assortment and could relate to and empathize with her struggles.

Customers began to see her boutique as more than just a store; it became a place of connection where human stories of struggle, loss, and hope were freely shared. By allowing herself to be vulnerable, she inspired others to open up, creating a cycle of support that nurtured her

through some of her darkest times amidst her social media and store community.

In 2020, Abby faced unimaginable losses. After enduring multiple miscarriages, she lost her youngest brother to fentanyl poisoning. Amid this grief, her boutique became her lifeline. "The business saved me and kept me going," she recalls. "If I didn't have that to focus on, I don't think I would have survived." The community she cultivated through her openness was pivotal, offering comfort and strength when needed.

That resilience was tested again when she lost her full-term daughter, Lane, in late 2020 and 2021. This loss coincided with her business moving to a brick-and-mortar location. She had ordered inventory to fill the new space and did not feel that she could adequately grieve and manage the store opening, so again, she turned to her community online. Her customers and fellow business owners rallied to sell out her inventory in a remarkable show of solidarity, providing her with financial and emotional relief. "It felt like a warm hug from the community," she says. "People showed up in ways I could never have imagined."

After recovering, Abby opened the retail location with fiery determination and support from friends, shoppers, and family. She renamed it July and June in honor of her brother Braden, who passed in July of 2020, and her first pregnancy loss, which occurred in June of 2020. "Grief and joy can coexist," she explains. Beautiful things can grow from the most challenging seasons of life." The shop's name is a reminder of that observation, life lesson, and her faith.

Abby is most certainly a role model we can all turn to and be inspired by grace, grit, determination, and values. Through her journey of infertility, miscarriages, and grief, she has turned personal trials into a ministry of service within her store, where women come together to shop and support one another. Abby and her husband have one son and are now pregnant with a girl.

Shokare Nakpodia

Inspiration Through Hardship

Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran

Shokare (Sho) Nakpodia has lived a life filled with exploring the world, from Lagos to London to New York City and now San Antonio. His life reflects a deep commitment to fostering understanding and collaboration through his brainchild, DreamWeek San Antonio.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Sho had an interesting middleclass upbringing, including attending boarding school at 9 in his home country, finishing high school, and studying civil engineering in England. Civil unrest in Nigeria, due to a downturn in the local economy, presented hardship during a national election campaign, which led to the tragic assassination of his father, a corporate executive.

This loss left a lasting impression on Sho. It instilled a deep understanding of injustice and the need for meaningful dialogue in resolving conflict. "The violence that caused his death, and the apathy that followed, made me realize that we had to do better collectively and individually to realize our kinship in humanity fully," Sho reflects.

Sho eventually moved to the United States, beginning his journey in New York City, and sought more of life's meaning through writing and graphic design. "I drove a cab in New York to make ends meet, day traded options, did some modeling, and took courses at the Arts School to support my goal of becoming a writer." These early years were marked by determination and resourcefulness, setting the groundwork for his creativity.

Sho's talent and hard work led to his first compensated creative project: "My first creative project was a couple of illustrations for The New York Times," he says. He moved to San Antonio to be near his sister, who had moved here some years earlier. A downturn in his trading portfolio, where “he lost practically everything,” forced him to reevaluate his motivation and passion. This turning point launched a thriving career, culminating in his own advertising and marketing business, The MightyGroup, and taking on the role of its first creative director.

The initiative that would define his legacy was sown during these years. "While at the MightyGroup,

I founded DreamWeek to develop a brand that would assist in explaining the world from different perspectives and where I could direct my experiences and talent in creating its unique identity," Sho explains.

DreamWeek was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s ideals and began as a platform to foster open dialogue and celebrate unity. The event series includes workshops, panel discussions, cultural celebrations, and community-building activities, all aimed at creating spaces where people can engage in meaningful conversations and celebrate diversity.

Over the years, the summit has grown to feature hundreds of events. DreamWeek's essence lies in its ability to bring people together unexpectedly. Past events have included Palestinian cultural celebrations, Jewish panel discussions, immigrant storytelling sessions, and LGBTQ+ advocacy events.

Sho explains, "DreamWeek is about the awe of humanity, its creativity, resilience, and potential." The summit is a place for exploring the challenges we face as a community. He indicates that beauty and strength emerge when we come together. "Too often, we remain in our bubbles, unaware of the richness and complexity around us," Sho observes. DreamWeek invites us to step outside our comfort zones and foster understanding between cultures while exploring issues like gun control, abortion rights, civic engagements, and immigration.

Though Sho was instrumental in its programming in the early years, today, the content of the events "is community-driven and organized by individuals and organizations alike."

Sho has made a difference in the lives of others, personally and professionally, through his willingness to engage in conversations that may seem uncomfortable. For Sho, these conversations are about exploring, learning, and relating to each other to “discuss our shared humanity.” DreamWeek is not just about the events. Sho says, “It's about the connections we build and the conversations we start."

Wendy Black of the Footbridge Foundation

On one side of the bridge lies the San Antonio stray population—hundreds of cats and dogs wandering the streets looking for a warm spot to rest or their next meal. The path to a forever home is on the other side of the bridge. Wendy Black, Founder and President of Footbridge Foundation, is trying to make that bridge accessible to more animals each year.

Wendy created Footbridge Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, in 2017 after realizing she could help more animals find forever homes if she recruited more animal lovers like herself. Over the last seven years, Footbridge Foundation, along with the dedicated help of donors, fosters, and volunteers, has saved the lives of thousands of dogs and cats.

“We are on track to rescue and adopt out at least 600 animals this year alone thanks to the much-needed donations of our generous supporters,” Black said.

Wendy’s “supporters” come in many forms. Footbridge Foundation is not a typical shelter that houses animals until adoption. They consist of a network of fosters and like-minded San Antonians who take in strays and work tirelessly to rehome animals who have been turned

over to city shelters and are just days away from being euthanized. Wendy and her team sweep in and rescue these animals, then work furiously to find a foster, medical care, and forever families.

Black spends hours each day drumming up support for Footbridge Foundation. On a typical day, she is on the phone, sending emails, talking to friends, and telling anyone who will listen about the need for sponsorship.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself to get things right. It takes a lot of dedication, but it is our lifeblood,” Black said.

Under Black's direction, Footbridge Foundation has made significant strides. Last year, it moved into a bigger facility and added a spay and neuter clinic. Black says this has allowed the foundation to spend more time rescuing animals and bridging the gap to a future with fewer strays.

The Heart of Red

Finding Your Shade and Wearing It with Confidence

WHAT? YOU SAY YOU CAN’T WEAR RED?

The idea that not everyone can wear red is a long-standing fashion myth that has discouraged many people from trying this bold, empowering color. Some shy away because they believe it clashes with their skin tone, feels too intense, or doesn’t suit their personal style. The truth is that anyone can wear red—the key is finding the right shade and tone for your unique coloring and determining how you’ll rock it!

When determining what color red works for you, consider the following factors: You need to understand your skin tone and the color red.

Warm Reds

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TONE

Warm, cool, or neutral undertones determine your skin tone. To find yours, check your wrist veins—if they appear green, that means warm; blue means cool, and both suggest neutral. Warm skin tones tan easily, while cool tones burn—another quick test-gold jewelry suits warm tones, and silver flatters cool tones. Identifying your undertone helps you choose the perfect red for your complexion.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT RED FOR YOUR SKIN TONE

There’s a red for everyone! Warm undertones shine in reds with yellow or orange bases, like tomato or poppy. Cool undertones look stunning in blue-based reds, such as cherry or ruby. Neutral undertones can experiment with both warm and cool shades to find what works best. The right red will enhance your natural coloring and give you an instant glow— so don’t be afraid to play with different shades!

Cool Reds

So, how can you rock your red this heart health season…

It doesn’t have to take center stage for you to embrace it. If wearing red near your face feels too bold, try incorporating it in unexpected ways. A pair of red heels, a stylish handbag, or a red skirt can make just as strong a statement while keeping you in your comfort zone. Accessories like scarves or jewelry with hints of red can also add a pop of color without overwhelming your look.

For an even softer approach, opt for prints that include red alongside colors you love and feel confident in. A floral blouse, plaid coat, or patterned scarf featuring red can subtly celebrate the hue while maintaining a balanced palette.

Patricia Muzquiz Cantor

Executive Director of the Convention & Sports Facilities Department

Berkus | Photography by David Teran

Readers, I have so much to share with you about the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, the Alamodome, and the remarkable woman behind these two iconic venues. In the mix, I will also shine a light on the ever-popular and versatile Tote Bag!

Let’s begin with some background. Our convention center, which covers 1.6 million square feet, is the central component of the city’s successful tourism industry. In 2025, the facility will host close to 300 events with nearly 770,000 attendees.

The Alamodome opened its doors in 1993. Envisioned as a community gathering place for SA and visitors, the facility has hosted local, regional, and international events that entertain patrons and bolster the area’s economy. Since opening day, the Alamodome has welcomed more than 35 million attendees, and in the past 32 years, it has generated more than $4 billion for the city’s economy.

The Alamodome is projected to host 117 event days in 2025, including the Men’s Final Four from April 5 to 7. Attendance at the Dome is expected to be nearly 1.4 million for the year. The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee oversees the Final Four and forecasts it will generate more than $250 million in direct economic impact for SA.

Now, let me introduce you to the leading lady who oversees these two major venues (and more) in Alamo City. Meet the delightful, upbeat, and always calm Patricia Muzquiz Cantor. Patricia has been the Executive Director of the Convention & Sports Facilities Department for five years, overseeing the Convention Center, Alamodome, Lila Cockrell Theater, and Carver Community Cultural Center. She is unique in this role —no other woman in the country oversees a multi-venue complex of this size.

During her tenure, Patricia has overseen the impressive transformation of the convention center into one of the country’s most celebrated and popular meeting complexes, thanks to its innovative, column-free design, flexible space, and advanced technology throughout. She helped manage a major expansion in 2016 that almost doubled the facility's size. The result is a public space that accommodates the whole family and includes impressive architecture and hundreds of local and regional art pieces, including paintings, sculptures, site-specific installations, and murals.

Patricia has also overseen powerful events at the Alamodome, including several NCAA Men's Final Fours, with the next one in the building this April 2025. The Alamodome has also hosted the NCAA Women's Final Four over the years and is scheduled to do so again in 2029. Patricia and her team have accommodated appearances by global superstar acts such as Elton John, Bad Bunny, Sting, Pink, and Guns and Roses in

the past three years. International superstar Shakira is in the Dome in June.

As part of the countdown to the 2025 Men’s Final Four, the Alamodome is currently adding 18 more suites, elevators and escalators have been replaced, and new finishes are being worked for the upper-concourse concession and eating areas.

Hosting major events in all these facilities is an enormous task and Patricia oversees all of it. From the nearly 400 staffers who work in the department to the hundreds of workers employed by vendors and partners, her focus is always on excellence. Patricia never misses a chance to praise her team, who works endless hours with her in advance of events to plan for clients' needs, including security, audio/visual, sales, and cleaning. She is definitely a female superpower in our community. She is to be admired for her extraordinary attention to detail, nonstop happy energy, organizational skills, and her winning smile. This dynamo is ready to welcome everyone to The Alamo City.

Patricia tells me that the one common denominator within all the conventions is the Tote Bag. Picture this —thousands of attendees roaming the convention center, looking for new and exciting ways to grow their businesses and connect with potential buyers and various target audiences. Providers often give away handy branded tote bags to carry the free swag offered during trade shows. If it's a really cool bag, the attendees become a walking advertisement for a company in the moment and months after. The keepers are often waterproof, durable, stylized backpacks and computer cases with pockets, sturdy handles, and straps. Collector totes are usually fashionable and have memorable slogans and creative designs. The most popular show bags come in all sizes, colors, shapes, languages, and materials. Some totes offer zippers, insulation, loops for keys, and tags. All showcase their brand with logos and various images that attract the eye.

Patricia enjoys collecting tote bags, too. She has 2000 stored away in city storage. These bags are repurposed and used to hand out gifts, like turkeys, to her staff during the holiday season. She keeps a smaller vintage collection at home. Her private keepsakes are bags from the Association for Professionals in Infection and Epidemiology, the Breast Cancer Symposium, the NCAA Men’s Final Four, Ulta Beauty, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Patricia’s Repurposing Tote Tips:

• Totes are great for holding books, groceries, and gym clothes.

• Totes are perfect for heading to the beach or packing up for a picnic.

• Totes are a fun way to pass out materials at team-building meetings.

A NEW PATH TO BETTER HEALTH & VITALITY

Frustration with the medical system is a recurring theme I hear from my patients daily. General complaints are offered about insurance verification issues, scheduling office appointment delays, and phone calls answered by voicemail recorders instead of a “real person.” The feeling of being rushed

through an office visit after waiting weeks or months to see the doctor is exasperating. Medical care in the US is the best in the world if you are seriously ill or close to death. There is very little time spent discussing the prevention of illness or chronic debilitating symptoms related to diet, exercise, and sleep. The system has become more and more of a complete mess to navigate……or, should I say, to tolerate.

Much of the blame goes to the way we pay for care. In partnership with hospital systems, insurance companies now control how medical care is provided. Governmental regulation continues to squeeze the ability of doctors to survive as primary medical care providers. This financial squeeze has required doctors to merge with larger and larger groups funded by venture capitalists. These new mega groups cut expenses to increase market value and then sell to hospital systems or insurance companies for a profit. Therefore, the control of how patients receive care gets more and more centralized. The result is care given by doctors and nurses who are given a quota of how many patients they are to see per hour in an 8-hour day. These doctors must practice in offices with too few employees to answer the phone, return calls, or send prescriptions in a timely manner to your pharmacy.

Another issue with our medical care system is the primary focus on “fixing” problems after they happen rather than preventing illness before it happens. We

are an obese, sedentary, chronically tired, and achy society. A strong immune system goes a long way toward preventing many problems before they happen and before we need advanced technology or expensive medications to save our lives. Our immune systems are depleted, weak, and overworked by environmental toxins, stress, and fatigue. More effort should be spent strengthening our body’s natural defenses, with less dependence on expensive technology, medications, and vaccines.

One answer to this dilemma, which started at least 10 years ago by many primary care doctors, has been Concierge Medicine. These doctors leave the insurance system and contract directly with their patients. The old-fashioned Doctor-Patient relationship is restored without a middleman bureaucrat. As a specialist, I have been interested in preventing disease by preventing issues causing illness for 35 years. In my medical spa, I have created a Concierge Specialty membership for my patients, allowing me to spend more time with each patient, provide more detailed care, customize care, and spend more time on disease prevention. Outside of the insurance system, my patients pay a fixed monthly amount for this service. I can see them within hours or days instead of weeks or months. They receive the expert care of a specialist to oversee their care without giving up the benefit of their usual primary care doctor. I work seamlessly with their primary care doctor to ensure they receive the best care possible. If medical tests, physical therapy, surgery, or even hospitalization are required, it is usually covered under the patient’s medical insurance in the usual manner. If the care of a specific specialist is needed, I will refer for that service and arrange for a much earlier appointment than would otherwise be possible.

Wellness techniques, improved nutrition, exercise, nonpharmaceutical supplements, vitamins, minerals, and botanicals can prevent chronic illness. My unique experience and training in pharmacy, internal medicine, anesthesiology, pain management, surgery training, and a fellowship in Aesthetics have influenced the formation of this unique Concierge Specialty membership plan within the Turquoise Springs Medical Spa framework.

I am incredibly excited about this new Concierge Specialty membership program concept. I am using my 40 years of experience practicing medicine, a lifetime of exercise and sports training, and years of managing obesity and nutritional issues, hormones, supplements, medications, and Aesthetics to care for the patients in this program.

This membership is for people who wish to take control of their health and appearance and benefit from an experienced physician on their team. I can customize a program to make your life the best it can be physically, mentally, and aesthetically.

If you need help organizing yourself and planning for your health, vitality, and appearance, call for an appointment to discuss. Ask Stephanie or Emily to help you get started at 210-253-3313 and schedule your consultation.

The Perfect Lash Look

As a lash artist, the key to stunning lash application lies in understanding each client's unique features. When customizing your lashes, I always consider eye shape, spacing, and your desired look. These are essential in achieving a beautiful effect that enhances your natural beauty. By customizing the lash style using these tips, we can create a truly personalized look that highlights your eyes and face features.

The perfect lash look can enhance your raw beauty, especially when styles are tailored to your eye shape. Here’s a refined guide:

Round Eyes: To create an elongated appearance, select longer lashes on the outer corner and opt for a more natural curl. This style enhances the natural curvature and provides balance. Most people will refer to this look as a cat eye, but you can modify it so it’s not too heavy on the outer corners and taper it a little shorter at the very end.

Almond Eyes: Almost any lash style works, but winged or cat-eye lashes enhance your natural shape. Opt for long, fluttery lashes with a gradual increase in length towards the outer corners. If you want a more open eye, select longer lashes towards the middle to give that beautiful illusion of a doll’s eye.

Hooded Eyes: Wispy, feathered lashes that add volume without too much length work best. Avoid overly dramatic styles that can overwhelm the eyes. I recommend length in the eye's middle to create a gorgeous look.

Monolid Eyes: Dramatic, full lashes that add height can beautifully enhance monolids. Consider volume or layered styles to create depth. Pairing these details with longer lashes in the middle and a more dramatic curl will help prevent the lashes from hiding under the lid.

Downturned Eyes: Opt for longer lashes in the center and slightly shorter ones towards the outer corners. This lifts the eye and creates a more open look. To help with droopiness, use multiple curls, D or DD, where the eye shifts down.

Upturned Eyes: Soft, fluttery lashes that are fuller towards the outer edges. This will complement the natural lift of upturned eyes. C curls would pair nicely with this eye shape.

Selecting the right lash style highlights your unique eye shape and elevates your overall beauty.

With 8 years of experience as a lash artist, I'm passionate about helping the beautiful women of San Antonio feel their best. At Jeweled Lash & Wax, we specialize in creating and customizing stunning lash looks that enhance your natural beauty. I’d love for you to come in and experience the luxury and care we provide.

Virtuoso Builders

Accepting the Challenge and Finding Solutions

Creating a new space from an existing one can present some challenges. At Virtuoso Builders, we kind of think of ourselves as problem solvers and are used to the hurdles.

Before

Boerne Addition

After

Challenge:

Our clients built this home over 40 years ago, and rather than build new, they decided to add on to gain a much larger French Country kitchen they had always dreamed of.

Solution:

The kitchen was expanded over 400 square feet to accommodate a 14-foot island. The extra room allowed for new windows, which increased natural light, customized storage, ample seating, and better flow for working and congregating.

Alamo Heights Kitchen

Challenge:

The homeowners purchased this 1990s home with the intent of updating it to their style of black-and-white elegance with gold accents. The home had a poor layout, and multiple cooks would soon be in the kitchen. There is a second story above, so the engineering of this endeavor was critical.

Solution:

The result is a wide-open kitchen with two islands and plenty of room to work and move around. This required demolishing and relocating an existing pantry. The larger island has an integrated dining table with waterfall panels. The second island has an added sink so two cooks can work simultaneously. The two-toned theme of black and white was achieved with gold accents on the fixtures and cabinet hardware. The original wood flooring was completely refinished with a lighter stain to soften the space.

Loo and Improved

Challenge:

Creating a wet room in a bathroom involves turning the entire space into a waterproof and functional bathing area. Our client wanted to transform their standard bathroom into a modern, minimalist wet space with limited square footage for a full-size tub and walk-in shower for two.

Solution:

The toilet room was demolished to create more space for an enlarged bathroom. We also borrowed space from the adjacent master closet, which allowed us to add a new window inside the wet area. The wet room includes a frameless glass enclosure, curbless entry, soaking tub, two shower heads with separate controls, and floorto-ceiling tile.

AT HOME

Challenge:

Leon Valley Kitchen Expansion

Our task was to lift our client’s childhood home out of the 1960s. She cooks and entertains, so prep and seating space were priorities. The current kitchen was limiting and closed off. Incorporating Spanish design elements, along with her favorite two colors, blue and white, was also important to her.

Solution:

Borrowing space from the adjacent Laundry Room and removing the dividing wall between the old kitchen and breakfast area added more room. A tray ceiling gives the space some depth. A new movable island allowed for prep space and seating to slide underneath. Blue and white patterned Spanish tile ties together the white cabinetry with the dark, leathered countertops. The original Saltillo tile was salvaged, and new Saltillo tied into the expansion.

Living with Purpose: Building a Life Around Your Goals and Dreams

What does it mean to live life to the fullest?

For me, the answer became crystal clear this year celebrating my 50th trip around the sun. Turning 50 wasn’t just about reaching a milestone; it was about embracing the adventure, joy, and purpose that define a life well-lived. It was a year where I dared to dream big and live even bigger.

This past year, I pushed boundaries, explored new horizons, and celebrated the life I’ve built. I went whitewater rafting in Costa Rica with my family, feeling the thrill of conquering the rapids while surrounded by breathtaking beauty. I cruised to Mexico with my best friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And now, I’m training for a 50k trail run (31 miles!)—a challenge that demands grit, perseverance, and belief in myself. Each experience has reminded me of the power of intentional living and how financial planning can be a foundation to help make these dreams possible.

Here are three lessons I’ve learned about living with purpose and designing a life that fuels your dreams:

1. Dream Big and Define Your Vision

Each of my adventures started with a dream. Whitewater rafting wasn’t just a thrilling experience—it was a symbol of stepping out of my comfort zone. The cruise wasn’t just a trip; it was a celebration of friendship and connection. Training for a 50k trail run isn’t just about fitness; it’s about proving to myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.

What’s your vision for your life? Purpose gives direction, whether it’s exploring the world, building deeper relationships, or conquering new challenges. When you dream big, you give yourself permission to live fully and intentionally.

2. Turn Dreams into Action with Habits

None of these adventures happened by accident. They required planning, commitment, and the ability to turn dreams into action. Just like I’ve committed to training for my 31-mile trail run, achieving any goal requires consistent habits that move you closer to your vision.

Financial planning works the same way. Start small: save each month, determine the finances you need to achieve your dreams and invest in your future. These simple habits can build momentum and help turn distant goals into lifechanging realities. Whether funding a dream vacation,

securing your retirement, or preparing for life’s unexpected moments, mapping the course can be key.

3. Protect What Matters and Invest in Your Future

Life’s greatest adventures come with risks, but they can be worth taking when you’re prepared. Whitewater rafting taught me the importance of a solid plan (and a sturdy life vest!). Financially, this means protecting and preparing for what matters most—your family, your dreams, and your future.

Protection planning with insurance coverage—minimizing your risk when ‘life happens’—is an essential safeguard that can provide peace of mind and allow you to focus on the journey ahead. At the same time, a financial plan that includes investing for your financial objectives can help you confidently build the resources to pursue your next adventure.

Your Journey Matters

Reflecting on my 50th year, I’m filled with gratitude for the life I’ve built and the experiences I’ve embraced. These adventures weren’t just about the moment's thrill but about celebrating the freedom and joy that intentional living brings. Financial planning isn’t just about numbers—it’s about creating a roadmap to a life filled with meaning, purpose, and unforgettable moments.

You deserve a life that excites and inspires you. What’s your next adventure? What dream is waiting for you to say yes? A solid financial plan can help you reach your goals.

I encourage you to take the next steps to help make your vision a reality. It’s a new year with new possibilities. Your future is waiting— make it extraordinary!

EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION:

NAWBO-SA’s High School Mentorship Program

The National Association of Women Business Owners San Antonio chapter was established in 1997. Since its formation, it has been recognized as one of the leading chapters in the nation. Central to NAWBO-SA’s mission is the focus on helping advance women in their quest to own their own businesses, regardless of what career stage they may be in.

The NAWBO-SA Foundation is a volunteer organization within the NAWBO-SA Chapter, with members who dedicate their passion, time, and resources to support this program. Through a collaborative effort among NAWBO-SA members, school representatives and administrators, and university and corporate sponsors, the High School Mentorship Program (HSMP) reaches hundreds of high school girls across San Antonio. Today, 12 NAWBO-SA members mentor 100 girls in 10 participating schools.

The NAWBO-SA Foundation’s current President, Nancy Hernandez-Johnson, has been involved with the organization since 2018. She is the co-founding owner and CEO of AV Calibrations, LLC. “As soon as I learned about the Foundation, I wanted to get involved,” Hernandez-Johnson said. “I knew I wanted to give back to these young women because the support we give them is so important and appreciated.

“Our High School Mentorship Program is such a wonderful resource for these young women,” Hernandez-Johnson continued. “They get oneon-one mentoring with our members and are encouraged and given the tools to develop an entrepreneurial business idea and plan. The students are also invited to attend four of our sponsored events – three university conferences held at local universities and a fourth event in which they present their business plan to our members for a final review and additional pointers on the plan. The five students whose business plans are selected as the best are each awarded a college scholarship ranging from $2,500 to $10,000.”

Carrie Gray is the owner of Cielo Strategy Group, a consulting firm specializing in working with nonprofit organizations on organizational development and strategic planning. She joined NAWBO-SA in 2021 and is currently President-Elect of the NAWBO-SA Foundation.

“When I first became involved as a NAWBO mentor, I had a real ‘ah-ha’ moment when I attended the event where we awarded the scholarship checks,” Gray said. “I realized we are developing the next generation of women entrepreneurs. With the mentoring program, we get to see all these young women have to offer and be a part of this.”

Gray noted she gets much more out of the mentoring experience than the mentees do. “It is so rewarding to work with these girls to help them develop and refine their business plans. I never had an opportunity like this when I was

younger, and I love being involved with creating these opportunities for them. We’ll know we’ve succeeded in our mentoring efforts when we see our mentees become mentors themselves to the next generation of young women.”

Yvette Allen is the Past President of the NAWBOSA Foundation. She has worked as a REALTOR since 2006 and is the owner of Real Estate 210, a brokerage and property management company. She quickly became involved in the group’s HSMP. “A week after I joined NAWBO-SA, I was asked to be a mentor at Lee High School. I immediately thought, ‘Wow, I wish I’d been exposed to something like this in high school.’ What’s more, this program is such a great way for women business owners to give back to our community.”

Allen noted that the mentees get so many benefits from the mentorship program. “At our university conferences, we ensure these girls get to meet other NAWBO members and girls from other high schools. We give them a little push to get out of their comfort zone.”

Allen emphasized that one of the mentors’ most important impact is the encouragement they give the mentees. “Many of these girls have never been told they can go to college or own a business. We encourage the mentees that, ‘Yes, you CAN do something hard and achieve success – and you will get a lot of support from us and others.’ This realization is so powerful for them.”

Hernandez-Johnson noted that all of the mentors are passionate about the roles they play in the HSMP. “We try to instill in these young women what we wished we’d heard when we were their age. We share our experiences and skills with them. She concluded that we get so much satisfaction from helping the next generation of businesswomen succeed by giving them a head start,” she concluded.

By Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran

Although Bank of Texas is relatively new to San Antonio, it has a long history. Its roots date back to 1910 when the original Bank of Oklahoma was founded on Tulsa's oil fields. Today, the bank operates in eight states and does business as Bank of Texas in Texas.

Eventually, leadership saw that to truly be "Bank of Texas," they needed a presence in Central Texas— specifically San Antonio. They built that presence by hiring a local team of seasoned bankers who understand the city and its people, organically growing the business one client at a time.

According to Leah Schoenfeld, SVP of Private Wealth Banking, personal relationships and community roots guide this approach. "We are a relationshipbased bank, and many of our bankers are from San Antonio originally or moved here for school,” she says. “The passion for our great city runs deep.”

Schoenfeld believes this familiarity allows the bank to combine the capabilities of a large institution with a personalized, boutique feel. Bank of Texas meets complex financial needs—from corporate banking to private wealth management—offering innovative resources and approachability.

Corporate banker Addyson Brooks, who focuses on companies with annual revenues over $20 million, sees a perfect fit between the bank's growth and the city's momentum. "We came to San Antonio in 2023, and it was the perfect time for a bank that's not too big and not too small," says Brooks. "Because of our financial strength, we compete with big banks, but we have the agility of a regional bank to craft specific solutions."

For Schoenfeld and Brooks, Bank of Texas's unique ability to serve personal and business banking needs under one umbrella is what sets it apart. "When we're talking about what makes our bank different, it all comes back to the people," Brooks says. “Everyone here cares so much about the city and our customers. We value relationships over just returns and are passionate about making San Antonio a better place."

Brooks finds tangible satisfaction in seeing the bank's impact. "When I drive through San Antonio, I see projects and businesses we helped finance," she says. "You realize you have your fingerprints

all over the city—it's cool." She believes this involvement generates economic benefits—from jobs and opportunities to housing and nonprofit support—while preserving San Antonio's unique culture.

Beyond serving clients, Bank of Texas invests in the community through volunteerism, philanthropy, and partnerships. "Our bankers are involved in the community," Brooks says. The bank's "Dollars for Doers" program donates to organizations where employees volunteer, encouraging engagement. Team members work with the San Antonio Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity and maintain ties with the San Antonio Zoo and Opera San Antonio, among many others.

Schoenfeld highlights these partnerships: "Our key partnerships are with the San Antonio Zoo and Opera San Antonio. We have a yearlong sponsorship with the Zoo, and they'll be part of the grand opening of our new branch location. And, of course, we can’t wait for Fiesta.” As a subsidiary of BOK Financial, the bank also taps into a strong philanthropic engine, focusing on Education, Basic Needs, Economic Development, and United Way.

Schoenfeld, who assists high-net-worth clients, emphasizes that the bank's blend of technology and personal connection makes it stand out. "Smaller banks might lack capabilities. Larger banks might be hard to reach. I like that we have the best of both worlds." In a city where personal connections matter, she aims to be a trusted advisor: "I hope clients think of me first whenever there's a need. If it's outside my expertise, I'll bring in a partner who can help."

By delivering a full range of financial solutions— from business acquisitions and treasury operations to wealth management—Bank of Texas strives to be a committed partner in San Antonio's continued success. The bank's leadership believes this fusion of local knowledge, relationship-driven service, and comprehensive capabilities will shape a prosperous future for the institution and the community it serves.

HEART HEALTH

The Importance of Prevention and Screenings

Your heart is the most vital organ in your body, working to distribute blood, oxygen, and nutrients to cells and tissues, which is why it is so important to keep it healthy.

February is American Heart Month, recognized for raising awareness about heart disease and highlighting ways people can reduce their risk.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., killing about 630,000 Americans each year.

Taking action to care for your heart can help prevent future complications and improve quality of life by minimizing shortness of breath, chest pain, heart attack, or stroke.

Heart disease is a term used to encompass a variety of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels: coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart rhythm problems, endocarditis, and congenital heart disease.

Prevention is key to avoiding heart disease. It is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Screenings for hypertension can start at age 18, though cholesterol screenings are recommended at age 30.

Prevention can be as simple as engaging in some level of activity. Exercise is important in keeping your heart healthy. It is recommended to do some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week. It could be walking, weightlifting, bicycle riding, isometric exercises, or swimming.

It is also crucial to eat healthy foods and create healthy habits. This is especially important for those who have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

The Mediterranean and DASH diets are proven to help reduce the risk of heart disease. They both promote the importance of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The DASH diet focuses on reducing sodium intake to help lower blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes healthy fats and overall dietary balance that can help with

blood pressure, glucose, and cognitive function, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Those with high blood pressure can follow the DASH diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy, lean protein, and nuts. It has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart failure.

Heart disease can present itself differently among men and women.

For some women, symptoms of heart disease are heart attack, fluttering feelings in the chest, shortness of breath, sudden fatigue, or swelling in the lower extremities like feet, ankles, or legs.

Heart attack symptoms can also differ between men and women. While both may experience chest pain, women have described also experiencing other symptoms like nausea, pain in the neck or back, and chest pain described as pressure or tightness.

Women can also experience pain in their neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or upper stomach; sweating; unusual fatigue; heartburn or indigestion; pain in one or both arms; shortness of breath; or lightheadedness or dizziness.

Having a primary care physician is beneficial. It helps to have a healthcare professional who knows your family history and habits looking out for you and can make recommendations as needed.

If additional heart care is needed, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System has cardiovascular experts available, offering a wide range of interventions.

Our patients can rest assured that if they, unfortunately, do need treatment for any heart disease, we can care for them right here in San Antonio.

Care can range from simple screenings and minimally invasive procedures to more complex invasive treatments.

The Head-Heart Connection

Recent scientific advances have revealed the remarkable interplay between the heart and brain. This concept showcases the heart's intrinsic nervous system, often called its "little brain." It challenges the traditional understanding of the heart as a mere pump and opens doors to a deeper understanding of how cardiac and neural health are intertwined.

The Heart's Intrinsic Nervous System

The human heart contains an intricate network of neurons called the cardiac nervous system. This "little brain" comprises sensory neurons, motor neurons, and interneurons that can process information, make decisions, and control heart function independently of the brain. The cardiac nervous system is a localized command center regulating critical cardiac activities such as rhythm and blood pressure.

Groundbreaking 3D Mapping

In a groundbreaking study, researchers recently developed the first 3D map of the heart’s nervous system. This map highlights the extensive neural pathways that connect the heart to the brain and other organs. By visually capturing this network's structural and functional complexities, scientists aim to decode the mechanisms of heart-brain communication.

Heart-Brain Communication: The Role of Brain Waves

The heart and brain maintain constant communication through the autonomic nervous

system, which consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Brain wave activity plays a pivotal role in this connection:

• Alpha waves (8-13 Hz): Often associated with relaxation, alpha waves can help modulate heart rate variability (HRV), a marker of cardiovascular health.

• Theta waves (4-7 Hz): Linked to deep relaxation and meditation, theta waves are thought to improve heart coherence and foster efficient cardiac function.

• Gamma waves (30-100 Hz): Associated with heightened mental states, gamma waves can influence cardiovascular responses, particularly during stress or high emotional states.

The Heart’s Autonomic Regulation

The Vagus nerve, a major component of the parasympathetic system, is a key player in heart-brain communication. It relays signals from the brain to the heart and sends feedback from the heart to the brain. This bidirectional communication underscores how emotions, stress, and mental states can directly influence cardiac function.

Implications for Heart Health

Understanding the heart's "little brain" has profound implications for health and medicine:

1. Stress and Heart Disease: Chronic stress disrupts the delicate balance of heart-brain communication, leading to conditions like hypertension and arrhythmias.

2. Neurocardiology Therapies: Targeting

heart-brain pathways with biofeedback, vagus nerve stimulation, or mindfulness practices may provide new avenues for treating cardiovascular conditions.

3. Personalized Medicine: The 3D map of the heart's nervous system could help tailor treatments based on individual neural patterns, offering precision in managing cardiac diseases.

Conclusion

The heart’s "little brain" is not merely an anatomical curiosity but a key player in maintaining health and resilience. Researchers are paving the way for innovative therapies that bridge neurology and cardiology by decoding its relationship with the brain. As we deepen our understanding, it becomes increasingly clear that the heart and brain are not separate entities but partners in a complex, dynamic interplay that shapes our health and well-being.

This research reminds us that heart health extends beyond physiology; it is deeply interconnected with our mental and emotional states, challenging us to approach heart health holistically.

HAPPY NEW "HEAR "!

As we welcome a new year, many of us make resolutions to improve our health and well-being. One area often overlooked in these resolutions is hearing health. Untreated hearing loss can significantly impact both physical and mental well-being, but the good news is that treating it can bring a host of health benefits—helping you truly embrace a "new you."

Hearing loss is not just about missing out on conversations; it’s linked to a variety of health risks. Studies show that untreated hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia. By addressing hearing loss with hearing aids or other treatments, you can reduce unnecessary mental strain, maintain cognitive function, and continue living an independent life.

Social isolation is another common consequence of untreated hearing loss. People with hearing difficulties often withdraw from social interactions because they

find it hard to follow conversations. This isolation can contribute to depression and anxiety. By treating your hearing loss, you can reconnect with friends, family, and the world around you—improving your emotional health and overall quality of life.

Physically, hearing loss is linked to an increased risk of falls. When we can’t hear well, staying aware of our surroundings is harder, which can lead to accidents. Addressing hearing loss with the appropriate solutions can enhance balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

As we enter 2025, I challenge you to prioritize hearing health. Call an audiologist you trust to schedule a hearing test today. Treating your hearing loss will improve your auditory experience and boost cognitive function, emotional well-being, and physical health, helping you live a fuller, more connected life.

The School Search: Navigating Your Child's Educational Journey

In the complex landscape of education, selecting the right school is more than a logistical choice— it's a decision that can illuminate their path, spark their potential, and set the stage for lifelong learning. Modern education is not a one-size-fitsall proposition. Each child brings a unique blend of strengths, challenges, and personal learning styles that demand a carefully curated educational approach. The quest for the right school requires a holistic examination of multiple critical factors.

At the heart of this search is understanding educational philosophy. Schools are not mere academic institutions but learning ecosystems that nurture young minds. Some institutions prioritize rigorous academic standards, while others champion creative exploration,

social-emotional development, or hands-on experiential learning. The key is finding an environment that resonates with your child's individual spark.

Emotional well-being stands shoulder-to-shoulder with academic achievement. A school's social landscape can profoundly impact a child's self-esteem and overall happiness. Pay attention to subtle signals—does your child approach school excitedly or anxious? A supportive environment that fosters genuine connections can transform education from a mandatory task to an inspiring journey of discovery.

Class size and teacher interaction play pivotal roles in this equation. Smaller classrooms often translate to more personalized attention, allowing educators to recognize and nurture each student's unique potential. A low teacher-to-student ratio means individual learning differences aren't just acknowledged but actively supported.

Schools that provide comprehensive resources for students with diverse learning needs create inclusive environments where every child can thrive. These institutions understand that educational excellence means recognizing and celebrating individual differences. Look for an environment that celebrates diversity, encourages critical thinking, and builds a genuine sense of community. The right school should feel like a second home—a place where you and your child feel secure, valued, and motivated to explore their capabilities.

Parent involvement represents another crucial dimension. The most dynamic educational experiences emerge from strong partnerships between families and educational institutions. Seek schools that welcome parental engagement, offering transparent communication and opportunities for collaborative growth.

Fife & Farro A Pearl Gem for Pizza and Pasta Lovers

We got tired of eating boxed delivery pizza in front of the television and wondered whatever happened to attractive little pizzerias where we could slide into a booth and share a slice of a hand-made pizza.

So, when strolling through the bustling Pullman Market at Pearl for the first time this fall, we came upon Fife & Farro, San Antonio’s new wood-fired pizza kitchen with an enticing Italian menu and a fun, full bar with counter space overlooking a big traditional pizza oven, and we decided we had to try it. Fife & Farrow offers a serene escape to a familyfriendly, no-reservations-required eatery specializing in wood-fired sourdough pizza and handmade heritage grain pasta. That sure beats the cardboardlike crust of our usual pizza delivery place, and we

liked the non-fussy yet still classy vibe there, too. Fife & Farrow feels like a casual, fun first-date place: the perfect setting for a relaxed lunch or dinner, offering a delightful culinary journey through Italy.

A Flavorful Feast

The menu at Fife & Farro celebrates Italian cuisine, featuring a delectable array of antipasti, pizzas, and pastas. Start your meal with a plate of garlic butter, hot focaccia bread, or a Caesar salad topped with generous heaps of freshly shaved Parmesan cheese. The butternut squash salad offers a refreshing blend of flavors for a savory winter option.

The show's real star, however, is Fife & Faro's woodfired pizza. Crafted with care using high-quality ingredients, these thin-crust pies fired up in an

authentic Italian style Forno Bravo, 2.5-ton, domed, commercial wood-fired pizza oven are a true delight. The Smokey’s Berkshire Sausage pizza, topped with mozzarella, smoked onions, and thyme, is a classic favorite. For a spicier option, try Matty’s Peppy pizza, featuring pepperoni rustico, mozzarella, and red sauce. Vegetarians will love the Not Your Momma’s Veggie pizza, combining summer squash, Texas chèvre cheese, market herbs, mozzarella, and a creamy white sauce.

Pasta lovers will also find plenty to enjoy, including the popular Wagyu beef ragu, featuring tender shredded beef over tagliatelle pasta in a rich tomato and red wine sauce. Another must-try is the pork and beef ravioli,

A Modern Italian Oasis

The atmosphere at Fife & Farro is both casual and sophisticated. The spacious dining room features modern and industrial elements, creating a stylish and inviting ambiance. The inviting space features tall, exposed brick walls, industrialized light fixtures, hanging green plants, and mid-century-modern style booths with classic yellow and white striped Amalfi-Esq touches. Unlike food hall stalls, this is a sit-down restaurant far from the Pullman Market Crowds. Whether you prefer to dine at the bar, get cozy in a booth, or gather with friends back in the private dining room, you will surely enjoy the space. One of four restaurant concepts opening last April in Pullman Market, Fife & Farro, is an asset to Pearl. Can’t get enough? Pick up some of Fife & Farro’s signature house-made pastas to take home from the market there, too.

Led by partners Kevin Fink, Tavel Bristol-Joseph, Alicynn Fink, Berty Richter, and Rand Egbert, Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group is the force behind Fife & Farro. At each of their restaurants, chefs bake their bread and bring in the best ingredients – all rooted in a commitment to quality, sustainability, and supporting local farmers and producers.

A Drink for Every Taste

The impressive bar program at Fife & Farro caters to a wide range of preferences. Classic cocktail enthusiasts will appreciate Bellini’s Brother (a sparkling peach treat), the Negroni on Top (gin,

di Torino), or the Caffè Errato (espresso-fernet, nocino, pandon, and coconut). Beer lovers can choose from a selection of IPA favorites along with other pilsners, ales, and ciders. Wine connoisseurs can explore a diverse wine list, featuring everything from a bold chianti to Tuscan cabernet sauvignon blends and sparkling prosecco. The bar offers a variety of zero-proof (non-alcoholic) cocktails as well as soft drinks, iced tea, lemonade, and Italian sodas. Happy hour specials include 25 percent off house cocktails, wines by the glass, wine flights, and draft beer. Enjoy $2 off antipasti and pizzas, too. It's the perfect opportunity to unwind and savor the flavors of Italy without breaking the bank.

The Perfect Pizza Night

So, when you’re ready for pizza night to be fun again—and not just have a pizza chain’s cold old box delivered to your door—head to Pullman Market at Pearl and experience the magic, festive, fired-up pizza and pastas of Fife & Farro.
