A Legacy in the Making: Jaselyn's Unstoppable Vision for the Arts
By Shauna Forkenbrock | Photography by Jeanann Wilkinson
of J Wilkinson Co
Jaselyn Blanchard has always believed in the power of the arts. Whether through a soaring Broadway ballad, the preservation of historic theaters, or mentoring young performers, she understands that art is more than entertainment—it is history, community, and an enduring legacy.
As the Executive Director of the Majestic Empire Foundation, Jaselyn holds a role seemingly tailormade for her—one that merges her deep-rooted connection to San Antonio's arts scene with her extensive experience in performance, production, and leadership. But like any great performance, her journey to this stage required hard work, determination, and an unshakable belief in the transformative power of the arts.
A Legacy in the Making: Jaselyn's Unstoppable Vision for the Arts
Growing up in San Antonio, Jaselyn's passion for the arts ignited early. Her father, Jeffrey Paul Blanchard, played a key role as an investor in the construction company that renovated the Majestic Theatre in 1988. This landmark project, led by Joci Straus, saved the Majestic and Empire Theatres from demolition, preserving them as cultural treasures. Witnessing the impact of these theaters— not just as entertainment venues but as living pieces of San Antonio's artistic soul—Jaselyn had a frontrow seat to the Majestic's grand stage performances and was forever transformed by the magic of live theater.
Immersed in dance, music, and storytelling from a young age, she studied and performed musical theater at the Josephine Theatre while attending Keystone School, performed and choreographed as a high schooler with the Lyric Opera of San Antonio at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, trained in ballet at the University of the Incarnate Word, and studied vocal performance at UTSA. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music from NYU and an MFA from Brown University. In New York City, she built a diverse career as a producer, actress,
singer, playwright, BBC audiobook narrator, and choreographer. As founder of Blanchard Creative Group, she became a sought-after brand strategist, helping artists, nonprofits, and corporations craft compelling narratives. A proud member of Actor's Equity Association, she later chaired the Austin/ San Antonio Liaison Committee, advocating for performers' rights, resources, and opportunities.
Her experience as a performer gives her a unique perspective. "I know the feeling of standing in the wings, heart pounding, waiting for that cue—that moment to shine," she says. "I've been the performer, playwright, director, producer, and stage manager. The arts—and arts education—have shaped every part of who I am."
The Next Act: Leading the Joci Awards and The Majestic Empire Foundation (formerly Las Casas)
Returning to San Antonio to Executive-Produce the Joci Awards—the nation's largest performing arts education and scholarship program—was more than a career move for Jaselyn; it was a homecoming. Since its launch in 2009, the Joci Awards has evolved into a Broadway-caliber event, awarding over $1.7 million in scholarships and propelling young artists toward higher education and professional careers. Every participant receives a minimum $3,000 scholarship, with top performers advancing to New York City for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards®—also known as The Jimmy Awards®
In 2024, Joci Awards alum Nicholas Barrón was named Best Overall Actor, while finalist Anna Zavelson starred in Broadway's The Notebook. Another 2024 finalist, Kruz Maldonado, recently took the iconic lead role in the National Tour of Peter Pan: The Hit Broadway Musical, highlighting the program's profound impact.
In the past year alone, under Jaselyn's leadership, student participation has tripled to 3,000 students across 33 Texas counties. Moving the program to the Majestic Theatre in 2025 will expand opportunities further. A new category now recognizes entire high school theater programs, with the top school receiving a $10,000 grant. Scholarships exceed $200,000 annually, and students gain access to 500+ hours of free workshops with industry
professionals. Partnerships with Texas State University and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) offer exclusive scholarships and recruitment opportunities, ensuring accessibility to arts education. But for Jaselyn, the impact extends beyond the stage. "The skills these students develop—creativity, confidence, discipline—shape future leaders, problem-solvers, and innovators," she emphasizes.
Expanding Access to the Arts for All Students
Jaselyn's core memories of Keystone school trips to the SA Symphony make equitable access to the arts a deeply personal cause for her. She believes every student, regardless of background, deserves the opportunity to experience live performance. Through MEF, in partnership with ATG Entertainment, she helped launch Broadway Bridges @ Majestic Theatre, a program offering free Broadway show tickets to high school students and teachers. "It's more than just
a day at the theater," she says. "It's about broadening horizons, sparking imagination, and fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts. I want every student to have that experience, and what better way than through the magic of attending a live Broadway show on the Majestic stage?" Complementing this initiative is the MEF Broadway Masterclass Series, which provides free interactive workshops with the touring cast members.
MEF Arts Spark: A Bold Vision for Arts Education and The Josephine Theatre
Spearheaded by Jaselyn, and launching in 2025, MEF Arts Spark is set to transform arts education in San Antonio and South Texas. "In many communities, access to arts education is disappearing," Jaselyn explains. "At MEF, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to ignite creativity, build confidence, and develop skills for success. We want to prevent students from losing vital opportunities for selfexpression, teamwork, and growth. As our
programs expand, the historic Josephine Theatre is the perfect space to add new opportunities and further our mission."
Committed to removing financial barriers, MEF Arts Spark ensures equal access to high-quality arts education. This dynamic initiative provides training in theater production—from performance and stage management to technical design. Through classes, workshops, mentorship, and hands-on experience, students develop real-world skills, culminating in student-led, professional-level productions. The initiative also revitalizes the beloved Josephine Theatre, preserving its rich history while transforming it into a vibrant hub for arts, education, and community.
Challenges and Triumphs: Fueling the Future of the Arts
Leading a nonprofit dedicated to the arts presents unique challenges—funding is never guaranteed, and balancing historic preservation with modern arts education demands both strategy and resilience. Jaselyn meets these challenges head-on, driving fundraising initiatives that expand arts access and deepen community engagement. With scholarship donations surpassing $200,000 and unwavering local support, the foundation's impact continues to grow. However, sustained funding remains critical to
ensuring these transformative opportunities endure. "Our growth is only limited by funding—and that directly impacts our ability to serve more students," she emphasizes. "With donor support, every individual can play a role in our mission to preserve, inspire, uplift, and educate. Together, we can build a brighter future."
Preserving History, Creating the Future
Jaselyn isn't just preserving history—she's making it. With a bold vision for the performing arts, she is ensuring San Antonio's cultural legacy thrives, one student at a time.
"The arts have the power to change lives," she says. "As long as I have a stage—literal or metaphorical—I will use it to ensure the next generation has a place to shine and the skills, confidence, and creativity they need to make a meaningful impact on the world."
As MEF prepares for 2025, spreading its mission remains a priority with innovative community fundraisers with local partners. Visit MEF's website at www.themajesticempirefdn.org and sign up for the newsletter to be in-the-know for special programs and events—including an exclusive pre-party at the newly renovated Gunter Hotel, and premium tickets to "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" next November.
Words of Wisdom:
Advice for the Next Generation
For young artists looking to follow in her footsteps, Jaselyn offers this advice:
1. Never stop learning. "The best performers, leaders, and creators are always evolving. Stay curious. Every experience— on stage and off—is an opportunity to learn."
2. Build relationships. "Success in the arts isn't just about talent—it's about collaboration. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. The best projects come from building something greater together."
3. Be fearless. "Art thrives on bold choices. Whether stepping onto a stage, writing a script, or leading an organization, take risks with confidence. The greatest rewards come from daring to dream big."
4. Give back and lift others. "The true measure of an artist is not just what they create but how they uplift others. Whether mentoring younger performers or preserving the spaces where art happens, always think about how you can contribute and make a difference."
The of SPORTS in San Antonio POWER
Meet three San Antonio women who work behind the scenes to demonstrate the impact of athletics beyond the playing field in developing athletes, leaders, and community builders.

JENNY CARNES: Empowering Youth Through Sports
Sports in San Antonio are more than games—they are a force for community growth, youth empowerment, and economic impact. Women are pivotal in shaping the city's sports landscape, forging partnerships that elevate San Antonio as a premier sports destination while expanding opportunities for young athletes. At the heart of this movement is Jenny Carnes, President and CEO of San Antonio Sports, a passionate advocate for using sports to transform lives.
Carnes' journey began with a basketball scholarship at the University of the Incarnate Word in 1995 which was an experience that instilled in her the leadership and discipline to pursue a career in sports management. She landed an unpaid internship at San Antonio Sports in 1999, just as the city prepared for its first NCAA Women's Final Four. "I literally started as an unpaid intern and had the great opportunity to come on full-time staff," she recalls. That moment marked the start of her rise to CEO.
Women have historically faced challenges in sports leadership, but Carnes and her peers have changed the game. "There was a time when everybody I was working with—between the city, Visit San Antonio, and UTSA—was being run by women. It was an incredible time." While sports remains a tough industry for women to break into, San Antonio is ahead of the curve.
Beyond hosting major events, Carnes is committed to providing underserved youth with sports opportunities—a mission shaped by her own experiences. "Our mission is to transform
San Antonio through the power of sport. That means creating a healthier community, healthier families, healthier kids."
Under Carnes' leadership, San Antonio Sports champions initiatives providing free sports access for underserved children and Title I school students. Programs like i play! afterschool, launched in 2008, introduces young athletes to sports fundamentals while fostering confidence, teamwork, and wellness. Research shows that i play! participants have better school attendance, fewer disciplinary issues, and stronger academic outcomes than their peers.
"Reinvesting in the community to fuel long-term investments in San Antonio's youth and the health and wellness programs will improve our overall quality of life," Carnes emphasizes.
Looking ahead, Carnes is expanding wellness initiatives and encouraging more community participation in sports. She believes in the power of sports to influence life trajectories. "You never know when someone says, 'Oh, I walked my first 5K,' and that could change their whole wellness journey." San Antonio offers many free fitness opportunities, walks, and runs.
At its core, San Antonio Sports isn't just about big games—it's about transforming lives. Carnes remains committed to making sports an engine for empowerment. "At the end of the day, I just want to make sure we're doing everything we possibly can for the betterment of San Antonio and doing it the right way—with passion and integrity."
ELENA WELLS: Sports Partnerships Shaping San Antonio
Elena's ability to build strong partnerships has made San Antonio a top destination for major sporting events. By uniting city leaders, universities, and national organizations, she drives tourism, boosts economic growth, and elevates the city's presence on the global stage. For her, every event is more than just a game—it's a chance to shape San Antonio's future by promoting top-notch attributes of the city and all of the excitement that sports brings to the table.
Now, as executive director for the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC), Elena ensures the city remains a premier host for major events. SALOC collaborates with the City of San Antonio, UTSA, and Visit San Antonio to attract high-profile competitions, generating significant economic benefits.
Hosting events like the NCAA Final Four is expected to contribute to economic prosperity for four days and attract 100,000 visitors. "Beyond direct spending in hotels and restaurants, San Antonio benefits from global media exposure, with ESPN and CBS broadcasting live from the city," says Wells. "Through this exposure, more people can learn about our city, perpetuating further reasons to visit San Antonio."
But sports tourism in San Antonio extends beyond the Final Four. From national swim meets to collegiate tournaments, these events fuel the city's economy year-round. "In 2021," says Wells, "hosting the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament was a highlight to the city's capabilities and jumpstarted the tourism industry post-pandemic, bringing much-needed business back to hotels and restaurants."
Executing large-scale events requires seamless collaboration. SALOC meets regularly with partners to ensure every detail is accounted for. Visit San Antonio manages lodging, UTSA and UIW oversee game operations, the City of San Antonio provides public safety, and San Antonio Sports leads volunteer efforts.
For this year's Final Four, 2,500 volunteers will be needed. Volunteer engagement brings the best of our city straight to visitors. Volunteers put a face on the city of San Antonio that is welcoming and knowledgeable. "San Antonio's walkable downtown and well-developed infrastructure make it one of only ten U.S. cities capable of hosting the tournament successfully and help elevate the experience for tourists and locals alike," says Wells.
Sports in San Antonio go beyond competition— they bring the community together. This year's Final Four will include a three-day music festival, a Tip-Off Tailgate watch party at Civic Park, and, for the first time, live broadcasts of the Women's Final Four alongside the men's games. Additionally, the Final Four Dribble will see 3,000 kids dribbling basketballs through downtown, leading to a festival at the Convention Center. These events create opportunities for everyone to experience the excitement and fun of major sporting events firsthand.
With each successful tournament, the city strengthens its reputation as a premier destination for sports tourism and economic development. "Every event is a stepping stone," Elena says. "It's about showing the world what San Antonio can do and making sure we're ready for the next big opportunity."
LISA CAMPOS: Blazing Trails in College Athletics
Lisa Campos, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Athletic Director at UTSA, has championed student-athletes in competitions and in the classroom. From a first-generation college student in Colorado to a driving force behind UTSA Athletics, Campos is committed to ensuring student-athletes graduate ready to lead in their communities.
Campos' journey began in southeast Colorado, where limited opportunities underscored the role of athletics in providing structure, opportunity, and a sense of belonging. At Colorado State University, she discovered her passion for student success through a master's program in Student Affairs, setting her on a path to advocate for student-athletes.
Her career in higher education began at UTEP, where she served as Assistant Dean of Students, overseeing student success initiatives. Mentors encouraged her to consider athletics. "Lisa, athletics needs people like you—people who think studentfirst," she recalls. That push led to a 20-year tenure in athletics administration, including 13 years as an athletic director prior to leading UTSA's efforts.
Campos is one of only 12 female Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors in the country. "It's humbling to be part of this small but mighty group of women," says Campos. "But it also comes with responsibility to be role models and bring other women into these roles." She hopes her leadership inspires women to pursue careers in athletics administration.
For Campos, success is measured not only in championships but in graduation day. "That's the peak moment," she says. "That's what we promised their parents, what our coaches and academic staff work toward. Watching them walk across that stage is what it's all about."
Consider Hailey Atwood, a standout UTSA women's basketball player who became a leader on and off the court. Initially hesitant about playing at UTSA, Atwood's journey transformed when Coach Karen Aston recruited her to help build a new culture for the Roadrunners.
More than just a competitor, Atwood exemplifies Campos' vision of student-athletes thriving beyond the game. A dedicated scholar and community leader, she graduated summa cum laude in criminology and criminal justice, was named Conference USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and is now pursuing her MBA. She aspires to attend law school, driven by her passion for justice and advocacy.
Campos and leaders like her are shaping the future of San Antonio in sports, ensuring that studentathletes not only compete at the highest levels but also graduate as leaders ready to serve their communities.
Atwood's journey—from doubting her abilities to becoming a scholar-athlete and mentor—perfectly illustrates Campos' belief in the power of athletics to transform lives far beyond the game. As Atwood says, "Basketball will come to an end. I don't want to be remembered just as an athlete. I want to be remembered for the example I set."
Campos couldn't agree more. "When women step up in sports, they don't just change the game, they change lives."
San Antonio's sports leaders are proving the impact of athletics extends beyond the field. Through their dedication, Jenny Carnes, Elena Wells, and Lisa Campos are not only shaping the city's reputation as a premier sports destination but also investing in the next generation of athletes, leaders, and community builders.
Jen and Paige Hardy
A Sisters' Journey

Role Models
Sisterhood is deeply rooted in love, resilience, and mutual understanding. For Jen and Paige Hardy, navigating their relationship wasn't always easy, with childhood friction and sibling rivalry extending well into adulthood. However, through dedicated personal growth and a commitment to healing, they've developed a strong bond built on trust. This bond has provided the foundation to extend their relationship interpersonally and professionally and, in so doing, inspire others to do the same.
The Hardy sisters immersed themselves in health and fitness from an early age. Their father, a wellness professional for over 50 years, taught them that sports and fitness were not just about physical health but also gateways to building community and learning self-discipline. In short, wellness is about your relationship with yourself and others.
Despite these positive influences, Jen and Paige's relationship struggled under the weight of labels and expectations. "She was the athletic one, and I was the pretty one," Jen recalls, explaining how these roles fueled years of resentment and misunderstandings that strained their relationships.
A significant turning point in their relationship came when Jen joined their father's business. After a situation where Jen blamed Paige for what would end up being a misunderstanding, she realized her mistake and sought forgiveness. This moment of accountability was a turning point for Jen. It taught her the importance of taking responsibility for her actions, a lesson that would become the basis of their renewed relationship. For Paige, it was about acknowledging what had happened and choosing to forgive.
Jen's experience with Landmark Education significantly influenced the sisters' journey toward better communication. What began as a personal exploration became a deeper understanding of their family dynamics. This insight was transformative, helping the Hardy sisters to see each other as allies rather than competitors.
"Learning to communicate intentionally has drastically transformed how we resolve conflict, support each other, and build trust," says Jen.
Studying tools like Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) helped them recognize destructive patterns in their communication, while other techniques like conversational preframes ensured they approached tough conversations with clarity and understanding.
"Asking 'How do you want to be heard?' before we start talking has removed so many barriers," Paige notes. This method has cleared up misunderstandings and strengthened their trust and support for each other.
Paige's personal trials also influenced the trajectory of their relationship, including recovering from a serious hiking accident and facing a cancer diagnosis. This pivotal experience reinforced her and Jen's bond. Paige realized that she needed to be her own advocate in her healthcare journey and trust her instincts as she navigated speaking with health professionals." Fighting to be heard during my health battles taught us both about the strength of our voices," Paige reflects.
Inspired by their own experiences of growth and healing, the sisters are now channeling their relationship-based insights into a new wellness business that embodies their belief in holistic health. Their business aims to offer a blend of physical care, mental resilience, and emotional growth, reflecting the comprehensive approach they've found so valuable in their own lives. They use the strength of their transparency and mutual support of communication skills to advance their personal and professional relationships.
Jen and Paige want their story to motivate others, especially women, to embrace their paths to wellness. "We hope that our journey inspires others to take charge of their health and well-being, to acknowledge and find their strengths, and to engage in the beautiful, sometimes challenging journey of personal growth," they share.
The Hardy sisters' story is more than a tale of two sisters overcoming their past; it's a guide for anyone eager to foster deeper relationships and personal well-being through commitment, discipline, personal accountability, and communication. It's about listening, empathizing, and using tools like NLP to understand one another and move forward together, one step at a time.
Devin Brown
An NBA Champion for the Community
By
Michelle Vasquez | Photography by David Teran
Guy to Know
From shooting hoops on San Antonio's southwest side to sharing a locker room with NBA legends, Devin Brown embodies what it means to focus on the end goal. He inspires others with his athletic talent, humility, intelligence, and unwavering commitment to his community. Despite his achievements, Brown remains grounded, channeling his discipline and love for the game into mentoring young athletes and giving back to the community he calls home.
Growing up in San Antonio, Brown had a strong family support system. He credits his father, who worked for the Sports & Recreation Department, for introducing him to the world of sports and emphasizing teamwork, personal competitiveness, and discipline. "When you're on a team, it helps you out," Brown says. "You know how to interact with different people because, guess what, not everybody's the same." His diligence and love for basketball led him to play college basketball at UTSA.
Knowing the odds were stacked against him in becoming a professional player, Brown prepared for a practical future. He was ready to interview for a job at H-E-B as an overnight stocker when a life-changing call invited him to join a three-month league where he became MVP. This unexpected success opened doors to the Washington Wizards' summer league. After his final game, Spurs coach Mike Budenholzer recognized him as "that kid from UTSA" and invited him to work out with the Spurs.
As a devoted Spurs fan, Brown was elated. He showed up for practice in his modest Toyota Camry, parking far from the luxury cars. One day, as he walked to his car, Coach Gregg Popovich called out, praising his performance and casually offering him a spot on the Spurs team. "Pop just said that?" Brown recalls, still marveling at the moment. "That one moment changed my life and gave me a 10-year championship career." Brown's contributions to the team were cemented with two NBA championship titles in 2003 and 2005.
After retiring from the Spurs, Brown transitioned into a second career as an AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) coach, mentoring kids who come through his program. He views this work as his legacy. "I want everyone to know that I was the coach and the player that never backed down," he says. "Others may be bigger, faster, and stronger, but nothing gets in the way of determination and preparation."
In support of that goal, Brown's program unites kids into one league to foster stronger competition and in so doing, stretching their capabilities.
Players learn essential skills like proper nutrition, practicing drills, and staying focused—all while keeping their academics strong. "Don't ever let anybody tell you that you can't do something," he advises young athletes. "Grades first. Make sure your grades are there, and you'll be able to do anything." His program helps young athletes gain exposure, playing in front of college coaches and setting the stage for future success.
Brown's dedication and sportsmanship have been recognized by the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, which he considers a crowning moment alongside his championships. "It was a tremendous honor. It meant the world to me to have the Spurs in attendance watching me go in," he says. "Being part of the Hall of Fame is a reflection of the journey, from high school basketball to playing with legends like Tim Duncan and David Robinson."
Despite accolades, Brown remains humble— signing autographs, sharing his story, and coaching his players and kids in sports and life. "When you're around guys like that every day, wedged between Tim Duncan and David Robinson in the locker room, you're exposed to conversations and perspectives that shape you," he reflects. "You learn how to see the game and life differently. It makes you better as a person." Today, Devin Brown inspires others to dream big, work hard, and give back, cementing his place as the best guy to know.
Diana Barrios-Treviño of Viola's Ventanas
By Shelly Miles
Born out of tragedy and fueled by an innate directive to forgive and help others, Viola's Huge Heart Foundation continues to help transform the lives of local San Antonians in need.
The non-profit, started by family members Louie Barrios, Teresa Barrios-Ogden, and Diana Barrios-Treviño just one day after their mother, Viola, was brutally murdered in her home, has helped hundreds of people over the years with scholarships and grants to pursue higher education and to find success in the workforce.
"Our mother, Viola, had a lot of empathy for those who were suffering. She always had a personal call to action. Whether it was a pot of her homemade chicken soup, a lemon bundt cake, a loan to cover expenses for necessities, or a simple prayer. She would more than likely say, 'These people are so desperate, I am glad that we are able to help!" said Barrios-Treviño.
Growing up, Diana and her siblings would often see their mother giving money and goods
to anyone who needed a hand-up. It was the culture of generosity that led them to create the foundation.
Viola's Huge Heart Foundation awarded its first scholarship in 2009 to a young eighth grader who showed huge promise and modeled the values that Viola held so dear: a willingness to help others, kindness, and generosity. Abigail Issarraras was awarded a four-year scholarship to Incarnate Word High School, went on to attend Northwestern University, and then earned a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Louisiana State University. To say Viola would be proud is an understatement. It was almost as if Viola herself put Abigail in the path of the foundation as she was the perfect "Little Viola" to receive the inaugural scholarship.
"Our mother helped so many people. She helped family, friends, customers, and employees. Many of these were loans that were never repaid. She helped people that were desperate because, at the end of the day, she would say that we had enough," said Barrios-Treviño.
Viola's Huge Heart Foundation continues to do the work of Viola Barrios 17 years after the death of the foundation's namesake. After awarding numerous scholarships, the foundation has pivoted to help improve the lives of youth who have aged out of the foster care system.
"It is the biggest problem in our community that nobody knows about. We are using the foundation as a platform to raise awareness," said Barrios-Treviño.

Donna Tuttle
A Bag Lady with a Purpose
By Lainey Berkus |
Photography by David Teran
Over seven decades ago, an ambitious visionary named Harmon Dobson created the iconic Whataburger brand—a burger so big and delicious, you had to hold it with two hands, and it could only be described with one phrase: "What a burger!" Since opening the first Corpus Christi location in 1950, Whataburger has grown to over 1,080 locations across 17 states, generating $4 billion in annual revenue and employing 51,000 family members. Known for its orange-andwhite A-frame design, Whataburger continues to expand its menu and community efforts, helping to shape the future of education and support local neighborhoods.
Meet Donna Tuttle, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Whataburger. She plays a pivotal role in shaping the brand's identity. Based in San Antonio, Donna oversees the company's marketing initiatives, including advertising, consumer insights, social media, public relations, internal communications, marketing menu strategy and community engagement. This year, she is helping the brand celebrate its 75th anniversary.
Burgers With Purpose:
Her passion for Whataburger's impact extends far beyond burgers. The Whataburger Feeding Student Success Scholarship Program is one of the company's proudest projects, offering $600,000 in scholarships for eligible students across the Whataburger footprint in the 2024-2025 academic year. To date, the brand has given nearly $2 million in scholarships. The 20252026 scholarship application process was open from January 1st through February 14th, 2025.
When I asked Donna to share a peek inside her Whataburger "bag," she had plenty of delicious answers. With more than 45 menu items to choose from, it's no surprise Donna's taste buds have been on quite the adventure since joining Whataburger in 2017.
Donna's breakfast favorite is the Breakfast on a Bun (BOB). "The BOB Ranchero is something of a Whataburger insider's menu item with jalapeño slices fried right into a fresh egg, paired with sausage and
melted cheese and topped with our picante sauce, all nestled into our fresh bun. We have regular BOBs without the jalapeño and picante, but I like a little spice to the start of my day."
When the day shifts into lunch or dinner, Donna typically goes for the #8 Whataburger double meat Jr. with cheese, fries, spicy ketchup and an unsweetened tea, which she recommends to anyone looking for a truly authentic Whataburger experience. "Our beef and melty cheese pairs perfectly with the fresh, crisp vegetables so you get that perfect combination of hot and steamy with a crunch. Our grill masters only start cooking once you order."
Dessert is in her bag too. Donna has a soft spot for the creamy shakes and flavored iced coffees.
Simply put, morning, noon or night, Donna's bag is absolutely delicious!
I now find myself very hungry. Guess where I'm headed!
Donnas Tips for First-Timers
Donna suggests starting with the Patty Melt, two 5-inch beef patties, two slices of Monterey Jack Cheese, grilled onions and Whataburger's creamy pepper sauce on golden Texas toast. "It is true comfort food, an indulgence that truly fills your belly and your heart.
"Don't be afraid to be creative. We have Day Dot stickers for your burger that say 'jalapeño,' 'avocado,' 'no onion,' and more. That is how our customers know the burger is uniquely their order. You can add extra bacon or avocado or replace the mustard with one of the signature sauces, toast the buns on both sides and even have it cut in half.
You can order ahead and pick up your meal to go or order your favorites delivered to your front door.
Download the Whataburger app to earn rewards and loyalty points, which you can redeem for free food, fun experiences, and special swag."
THREE COMMON MEDICAL FACTS THAT ARE….IN FACT, NO LONGER ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!
By Bill Murphy, MD, Medical Director, Turquoise Springs Medical Spa
It is very difficult to know what to believe as we are inundated everyday with medical information. It flows from social and broadcast media, books, podcasts, and even from our Aunt Maria. The Covid pandemic made us question the FDA, the CDC, the NIH and even our doctors and health personnel in some cases. RFK Jr. is a controversial figure who is picked to run the HHS department. You may like him or not, but he is known for questioning what is considered common knowledge. Questions like, are our vaccines safe for children and adults? Does our food contain toxic chemicals which increase profits for producers, but cause harm to our health? Why is 42% of the American population now considered obese compared to only 13% in 1960? What has changed if it is not our genetics? What has caused this difference over the last 65 years since 1960 when RFK Jr’s uncle was president? These seem to be questions worth asking.
Over the last 40 years, I have seen many changes in medical knowledge. I have changed my views on a myriad of supposed absolutes. I wonder now how I could have possibly believed some to be true. I forgive myself when I remember everyone once thought the world to be flat. So, let’s go over some common certainties which are no longer so absolute.
High cholesterol is said to be absolutely bad for your health and body. In truth, your body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and to heal and restore brain cells. Cholesterol is vital to insure normal function for your body. We now know if cholesterol gets too low, bad things happen to brain and body function. We also hear there is good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL), but in fact the cholesterol molecule is the same. The difference is how it is packaged with a carrier protein and transported to your cells. Indeed, the main problem is, in fact, inflammation of your blood vessels. When we eat poorly, fail to exercise, and flood our body with toxic food additives, heavy metals, and plant based seed oils (canola, sunflower, corn, grape seed) we cause inflammation and damage to the lining of our small blood vessels. This increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and organ damage. As the LDL (low density or fluffy cholesterol molecules) cross this damaged lining, they get stuck, form plaque, and eventually block the blood vessel. If you eat “clean”, exercise, and use healthy oils (olive, coconut, avocado), you have less LDL and more HDL (high density particles). HDL crosses the membrane easily and does not congregate on the vessel wall. So it’s not so much, how high is your blood level of cholesterol, but what is
the ratio of high density particles to “fluffy” LDL particles and how much body inflammation you have?
Fluoride in our drinking water is a good thing. Right? Not necessarily. Fluoride was first added to our drinking water back in the 1940’s to prevent tooth decay. Two out of three homes in America have fluoride placed in their drinking water. Some newer research has raised concerns about the effect of fluoride on gut health, neural health in babies and long term effects on IQ. It may also contribute to body inflammation noted in #1 above. An analysis by the Cochrane group, an international non-profit that reviews medical research, has found “very little contemporary evidence” water fluoridation successfully prevents cavities. If someone tells you fluoridation of the water supply is entirely safe and essential for public health, that is an opinion, not a fact.
The use of estrogen and progesterone was considered something of a miracle for women in menopause, helping with symptoms such as hot flashes and depression, while also lowering the risk of heart attacks and Alzheimer’s for decades before the late 1990’s. However, in 2002, the NIH declared based on a poorly sourced study, HRT (hormone replacement therapy) results in a “26% higher incidence of breast cancer”. The study used synthetic hormones or pills made from hormones found in horse urine. When human based or Bio-identical hormones are used and compared to placebo, there is no statistically significant difference in rates of breast cancer compared with placebo. Tragically, it seems, a generation of women have been denied this life changing treatment and the benefits of same.

Refreshing Your Makeup Kit: Tips for Embracing Timeless Beauty
By Dora Vera, Owner, The Look Beauty Studio
As a makeup artist, I've witnessed how transformative makeup can be—not just for appearance, but also for boosting self-esteem and empowering women. Makeup is not about hiding your natural beauty; it's about embracing it and enhancing your individuality. Whether you're in midlife or simply looking for a fresh approach, makeup can be a powerful tool to uplift and celebrate who you are.
For many of us, a morning routine sets the tone for the day. How we feel in the morning often carries over into the rest of the day—whether we're heading to work, meeting friends, or tackling personal goals. One of the most effective ways to boost confidence is through makeup—specifically, using techniques that enhance our natural features and give us an instant lift.
Here are eight tips for refreshing your makeup kit and updating your morning routine:
1. Start with Skincare
Before applying makeup, remember that skincare is the foundation of any great look. A solid skincare routine keeps your skin hydrated and glowing, making makeup easier and more flattering. Use products that address your concerns, such as hydration or fine lines. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, or ceramides to help plump and lock in moisture.
2. Choose a Lighter Foundation or Tinted Moisturizer
Heavy, full-coverage foundations can settle into fine lines, emphasizing them instead of concealing them. Instead, opt for a lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer with hydrating properties, like ones with hyaluronic acid. These products provide just enough coverage to even out the complexion without feeling heavy or cakey.
Make sure the shade blends seamlessly with your natural skin tone. Test it in natural light to ensure a perfect match.
3. Consider Your Undereye Area
The undereye area is one of the first to show signs of aging. A good, hydrating concealer can brighten and disguise concerns like dark circles or puffiness without settling into wrinkles. Choose a lightweight, creamy concealer with light-reflecting properties and apply gently with your ring finger or a small brush.
4. Embrace Cream Products
Cream blushes, bronzers, and highlighters blend beautifully into the skin, creating a natural, dewy finish. These products are more flattering than powders. Apply cream blush on the apples of your cheeks, blending upwards for a lifted effect, and use cream bronzer along the cheekbones for a sun-kissed glow.
5. Soft, Defined Eyebrows
As we age, eyebrows lose fullness. Instead of harsh, dark pencil liners, choose a brow gel or pencil in a shade slightly lighter than your natural color. Focus on filling in sparse areas and defining the shape, rather than creating a bold look. A tinted brow gel can add volume and hold brows in place throughout the day.
6. Focus on Lush Lashes
A volumizing mascara is essential to open up the eyes and make them appear more awake. Use a mascara with a curved brush to lift and separate lashes. For an extra boost, consider a lash primer to condition and add volume before applying mascara.
7. Warm Up Your Lip Color
Instead of bold, bright lip colors, embrace softer, neutral tones that complement your natural lip color. Hydrating formulas with a satin or glossy finish will enhance your lips and their shape.
8. Update Your Tools
Don't forget to refresh your makeup tools. Over time, brushes and sponges can harbor bacteria, leading to breakouts and irritation. High-quality tools make a huge difference in how your makeup applies, ensuring a natural, polished look.
Refreshing your makeup kit isn't about following trends but about choosing products that enhance your natural beauty. By focusing on lightweight, hydrating formulas, you can create a timeless, radiant look that boosts your confidence every day.

A Nature-Inspired Transformation: The Castle Hills Project
By Diana Deitrick, Owner of Craft House Interiors
Nestled in the picturesque neighborhood of Castle Hills, this once-dark and compartmentalized ranch home has undergone a breathtaking transformation. Originally featuring low ceilings, awkward angles, and a disjointed floor plan, the home has now been reimagined into an elegant yet inviting gardeninspired retreat.
When the client approached us to design her house, she presented a unique challenge: preserving elements of the original home while elevating it into a sophisticated, high-ceiling sanctuary that seamlessly blends classic elegance with modern comfort. The result? A stunning fusion of nature's beauty, refined textures, and architectural grandeur.
Photography by Jonathan at Maverick Studio Photography
A Vision Rooted in Nature
The design concept focused on bringing the richness of the outdoors inside. To achieve this, we curated a palette of warm yet neutral tones, accented with elegant moldings and paneling, all unified under a single color to highlight the intricate trim and crown details. Ceilings were elevated to a grand 12 feet, creating a sense of openness and sophistication. Rich textures— expressed through flooring, cabinetry, wallpaper, and statement lighting—were carefully selected to enhance the home's organic charm.
A Kitchen Reimagined
At the heart of this transformation lies the kitchen—now a striking focal point that effortlessly balances beauty and functionality. Originally the living room, this newly reconfigured space enjoys picturesque views of the sprawling one-acre yard framed by mature oak trees. A cozy fireplace enhances the warmth and intimacy of the kitchen, making it the true heart of the home.
Custom-designed in a serene green, the kitchen features striking quartzite countertops in deep green, black, and white, complemented by brushed brass fixtures and appliances. A grand kitchen island provides ample space for family gatherings and entertaining, while 3D-textured porcelain tiles add an extra layer of depth and refinement. Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining room exudes timeless charm with a custom walnut slab table, a hand-painted mural of trees and birds, and a breathtaking branchand-crystal-leaf chandelier.
A Sunroom That Embraces the Outdoors
Originally the dining room, the sunroom was redesigned to feel like an extension of the backyard. Vaulted ceilings, wood-paneled walls in a custom wash finish, and expansive picture windows framed by classic French doors create an airy, light-filled oasis. Simple furnishings allow lush greenery to take center stage, with a statement lighting fixture adding a touch of understated elegance.
Bringing the Outdoors In
Throughout the home, natural elements play a starring role. Textured bamboo-like tiles, 3D-patterned surfaces, floral-inspired lighting fixtures, and luxurious fabrics like velvet and silk blend seamlessly with contrasting wood finishes. Oversized indoor trees and custom floral arrangements further enhance the home's organic aesthetic, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living.
A Master Retreat of Timeless Elegance
The primary suite was designed as a luxurious sanctuary, blending classic paneling with a rich blue-green hue that contrasts beautifully with soft furnishings and ambient lighting. The master bathroom exudes sophistication with marble mosaic flooring in a delicate leaf pattern, bespoke walnut cabinetry, and polished nickel accents that add a touch of glamour. A stunning walk-in shower features oversized brown-gray marble tiles paired with a sculptural 3D-leaf accent wall, echoing the home's nature-inspired motif. A freestanding 72inch soaking tub sits against a dreamy nature-scene wallpaper, illuminated by warm, elegant lighting for a spa-like ambiance.
A Harmonious Exterior
The exterior design was carefully crafted to complement the serene landscape while standing in harmony with the towering oak trees that surround the home. A fusion of modern living, classic design, and rustic mountain-cabin allure, the façade captures the essence of refined country living.
The Castle Hills Project is a stunning example of thoughtful design, where nature and luxury seamlessly come together to create a home that is both timeless and welcoming. A heartfelt appreciation goes to the talented team at MaiVu Plumbing & Construction for bringing our vision to life with exceptional craftsmanship.

A new report from the International Door Association ranks Hollywood-Crawford as the fifth largest residential garage door company in the nation and the twelfth largest garage door company overall nationwide for both residential and commercial service, based on 2023 business results.
Positive feedback from customers led to Hollywood-Crawford earning its eighteenth consecutive Angi Super Service Award in Nov. 2024. The award recognizes home service professionals who provide exceptional customer service.
Yelp also honored Hollywood-Crawford with a 2024 People Love Us On Yelp Award as one of the highest-rated and best-reviewed businesses on the platform, as determined by customer reviews.

"After nearly eight decades in business, we know that the only way to create happy customers is with happy employees who put customer service first," said Randy Oliver, president of Hollywood-Crawford Garage Door Company.
Positive customer and employee reviews reflect HollywoodCrawford's ongoing success, which has allowed the company to donate more than $100,000 to several nonprofit organizations serving San Antonio and the Hill Country in 2024.
"We were blessed with another good year, so we are thrilled to give back by supporting organizations that help people in need," Oliver said.
The company donated to nonprofit organizations including:
1. Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries, which serves as a regional resource center for church outreach programs and nonprofit agencies that serve those in poverty and crisis in an eight-county area in the Texas Hill Country.
2. Daily Bread Ministries, a nonprofit that supports food pantries in the area with fresh, healthy food. In addition to weekly food distribution, Daily Bread equips its partners with resources and training to address the root cause of poverty.

KM Interior Design
Kelly McKeand, Owner
At KM Interior Design, Kelly McKeand helps San Antonio homeowners transform their spaces through both fullroom redesigns and targeted refresh projects. "I work with clients across the spectrum - from helping select the perfect paint colors and furniture placement to complete kitchen and bathroom remodels.
Many of my projects focus on creating functional, beautiful spaces that reflect how families actually live and entertain."
When asked about the benefits of hiring a designer versus DIY, Kelly emphasizes both practical and emotional advantages: "While design shows make it look easy, an experienced designer brings deep knowledge of space planning, materials, and trusted contractors.
We help clients avoid costly mistakes and actually save money by getting things right the first time. Plus, we manage all the details and coordination, turning what could be an overwhelming process into an exciting journey." Kelly's approach to understanding clients' needs is highly collaborative. "I start by having clients share photos of spaces they love and asking detailed questions about how they use their rooms.
Sometimes, clients know exactly what they want but need help executing the vision. Other times, they're uncertain, and we work together to discover their style through conversation and carefully curated options. My job is to listen carefully and translate their wishes into beautiful, livable spaces."
For Kelly, the most rewarding part of interior design is seeing the joy on clients' faces when they see their transformed spaces. "There's nothing better than watching someone walk into their newly designed room and seeing their eyes light up.
Whether it's a busy mom finally getting her dream kitchen or a couple creating their perfect entertaining space, helping people fall in love with their homes again is incredibly fulfilling."

Courtney Balsam, Owner & Principal Designer
What are the benefits of hiring an interior designer vs. doing it alone?
By hiring a licensed interior designer, you gain first-hand expertise in best practices, not only for what will look best but also for what will be the most functional. We've been through the building/remodeling process on a multitude of homes and designed countless rooms, so chances are we've encountered the same questions, limitations or specialty needs on your project in the past and have a solution or vendor that can answer your specific needs.
In addition to years of knowledge and experience, you also gain access to a vast array of trade vendors that can assist your designer in creating the home of your dreams. We want our client's homes to reflect their personality. We source furnishings, fabrics, tile, and materials from a broad range of global vendors to create the perfect customized space for each of our clients.
What mistakes can you help clients avoid when designing their homes?
An Interior Designer can help save you time, money, and stress. Our team selects all materials and details ahead of time to make sure that the design is not only pretty to look at but also functional and well-planned. We want to address all questions and work through any potential issues before they even arise. We have a process that we follow to avoid any unnecessary mistakes and delays. Our team looks at the big picture, keeping you on track to make timely decisions that are cohesive and intentional with your end design goal in mind.
What's new in design that you are excited about for 2025?
We love that people are getting back to color! For a while, it seemed like people leaned toward white kitchens with white walls and white countertops. Currently, we are seeing a lot more interesting materials and deeper color tones. I think people are tired of having the same home that everyone else has, and they want their homes to be unique and interesting.

What design trends excite you in 2025?
Design today goes beyond aesthetics—it's about creating homes that enhance well-being and balance. Wellnesscentered design is leading this transformation. Through biophilic elements like natural materials, soothing colors, and organic features such as light and greenery, we connect homeowners to nature. Another exciting aspect of this trend is incorporating wellness-promoting areas into the home. This could include a drink station in the kitchen or an aromatic steam shower in the bathroom. These thoughtful choices restore energy, reduce stress, and promote genuine happiness. I love helping clients thrive in spaces that make them feel alive and inspired every day.
How do you stay inspired?
Inspiration comes from many places—nature, architecture, and my clients' stories—but staying ahead in design requires continuous growth. I stay current by attending top industry events like KBIS, where I spoke on the importance of contractor collaboration. These partnerships are essential for executing complex designs seamlessly and ensuring success. Ongoing education through CEUs also helps me stay ahead of new codes, materials, and innovations, enabling me to offer clients designs that are both cutting-edge and reliable. In addition, one of my favorite magazines is Atomic Ranch, which focuses on mid-century modern design and continually sparks new ideas.
Why hire a designer?
Turning dreams into reality takes expertise. Designers blend creativity and technical mastery, handling space planning, safety, and compliance with ease. Hiring an interior designer for your largest investment—your home—is like having assurance that it will retain and even grow in value once the last elements are installed. At Industrious Interiors, our Dream Process guides clients from concept to completion, helping them avoid costly mistakes. Whether you're embarking on a full renovation or a thoughtful refresh, hiring a designer to help steward your biggest investment is key to achieving your dream home.

What are the benefits of hiring an interior designer vs. doing it alone?
Designing a home is more than selecting furniture and colors—it's about creating a space that reflects your lifestyle, enhances functionality, and exudes luxury. While DIY design can be tempting, partnering with a professional interior designer ensures an effortless, high-end transformation. This includes elevated expertise and vision, exclusive access to luxury resources, a stress-free, time-saving experience, smart investment and cost savings, bespoke luxury designed specifically for you and how you live, enhanced property value, full-service project management, and a cohesive, sophisticated look to your home that's intentional down to the smallest detail.
What type of clients do you work with? Do you have a minimum budget? They value good design and the service we provide them. They typically contact us for a whole-home remodel, multi-room project, or when they're building a custom home. To ensure we can provide a high level of service, dedicate the time, attention, and resources required for exceptional results, our furnishings projects typically start at a $30,000 investment per space. This allows us to deliver the quality and attention to detail our clients expect. For high-end home remodels, the level of investment depends on the scope, size, and location of the project and can start at $75,000 - $100,000 and up.
Where do you find inspiration? How do you stay current with trends, technology, and codes?
I find inspiration everywhere! It can be something I see during a morning walk or the design of a chic boutique hotel when I travel to different countries. Beauty is all around us. To stay current with trends and learn about new products, each year we attend some of the largest trade shows in the country such as the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and High Point Market. I'm always looking for new experiences and industry events to participate in to make valuable connections and improve my craft.

San Antonio’s SHORT-TERM RENTAL MARKET Key Insights for Investors
By Bruce X. Forey, REALTOR®, Portfolio KW
San Antonio’s real estate market has always been fueled by its rich history, booming tourism, and strong job growth. But in recent years, shortterm rentals (STRs) have become one of the most talked-about investment opportunities in the city. Whether you’re an investor looking to capitalize on the trend or a homeowner considering listing your property, it’s important to understand how the STR market is evolving, the challenges that come with it, and how to make your rental stand out.
Tourism and Demand: Why STRs Are Thriving
San Antonio is a top travel destination—and it’s not just for the River Walk and the Alamo. Fiesta,
Spurs games, major conventions, and a year-round warm climate make the city a go-to for visitors. This steady demand has shifted the way people look for lodging, with more travelers choosing Airbnb and Vrbo over traditional hotels.
STRs aren’t just booming downtown. Southtown, the Pearl District, Alamo Heights, and even the suburbs are seeing an influx of short-term rental activity, as guests seek out more authentic, homelike stays while visiting the city.
The Rules: What Investors Need to Know
With growth comes regulation, and San Antonio has several rules short-term rentals must follow. The city classifies STRs into two categories: Type 1 (Owner-Occupied): These are homes where the owner lives on-site and rents out a portion of their residence. Type 2 (Non-Owner-Occupied): These are full-time investment properties used exclusively for short-term stays.
If you’re considering an STR investment, check zoning laws, secure permits, and be aware of HOA restrictions. Some neighborhoods limit the number of STRs allowed or prohibit them entirely. Violating these rules can result in hefty fines, so compliance is crucial. Go to SA.gov and search Short Term Rentals to learn more.
Taxes
Beginning March 10, 2025, platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway will automatically collect
San Antonio
and remit the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) to the city on behalf of STR operators. If you rent through other means, you’ll need to handle tax payments yourself. Staying informed on tax obligations is just as important as keeping your listing booked.
ROI Potential
San Antonio’s real estate market is more affordable than Austin or Dallas, making it a great place to buy an investment property. Before diving in, run the numbers. What’s the nightly rate in your area? STRs in prime locations can demand higher rates. What’s the occupancy rate? Seasonality affects bookings, so consider pricing adjustments.
What’s your budget? Aside from buying the property, furnishings, cleaning, management fees, and maintenance add up. Some investors choose to self-manage their rentals, while others hire STR management companies to handle bookings, guest interactions, and maintenance. Either way, attention to detail and great hospitality make all the difference in maximizing profitability.
Standing Out in a Crowded Market
With more STRs hitting the market, first impressions matter more than ever. High-quality photos are essential. A professional real estate photographer can showcase your space in the best light. Write a compelling listing description by highlighting unique features—proximity to nightlife, a chef’s kitchen, pet-friendly accommodations, or a private pool. Guests love extras like luxury bedding, high-end coffee makers, and spa-like toiletries. Be responsive and provide top-tier service. Fast communication and thoughtful touches (like a local guidebook) help earn those five-star reviews.
Community Impact
While STRs can be profitable for investors, not everyone is thrilled about having them in their neighborhood. Some San Antonio residents argue that short-term rentals drive up housing costs and
reducing long-term rental availability. Others worry about noise, parties, and transient guests disrupting quiet neighborhoods. At the same time, local businesses benefit from increased foot traffic, as STR guests often explore surrounding restaurants, shops, and attractions. The key to sustainable STR growth is balancing community interests with responsible investment practices.
What’s Next for STRs in San Antonio?
San Antonio’s STR market isn’t slowing down. As the city grows, more investors are entering the game. With business travel picking up and the rise of the mobile population seeking furnished, short-term housing, STR’s offer exciting investment potential. Tech-driven pricing strategies are improving profitability. Smart investors are using data-driven tools to maximize earnings.
If you’re considering an STR investment in San Antonio, now is the time to do your research, ensure compliance, and create a guest experience that stands out.

1. What sets your accounting firm apart from other firms?
At Badger, we focus on more than just numbers—we build relationships. Our relational approach, high-touch boutique environment, and world-class team set us apart. We hire people who not only deliver results but genuinely care for others. Serving clients with humility and excellence is at the core of everything we do. In an industry where transactional relationships are becoming automated, we believe human connection is more important than ever.
2. Why did you decide to go into the field of accounting?
I’ve always loved math and solving problems with numbers, so accounting was a natural path. I’ve long been fascinated by entrepreneurship, and advising business owners has become my true passion. Helping clients understand their finances and make confident decisions is incredibly rewarding. The field is evolving quickly with advancements in technology and AI, but what will always matter most is the ability to provide thoughtful advice and build meaningful client relationships.
3. What do you enjoy most about your work?
The most fulfilling part of my work is seeing the tangible difference we make in clients' lives and businesses. Recently, we helped an organization uncover financial inconsistencies, build better reporting processes, and restore trust within their team after a difficult transition. Business owners often feel overwhelmed by accounting, and it's gratifying to bring clarity and peace of mind. When companies have solid financial systems, they can better serve their teams and customers.
4. Who has influenced you the most in your life or career?
My family has been my greatest influence. Growing up, my parents emphasized kindness towards others, hard work, and humor, values I carry into my leadership today. My husband and four children keep me grounded and remind me of what truly matters. Being a mother has given me more empathy for working parents and a strong desire to create a culture where our team can do great work while prioritizing their families.
5. What’s your favorite thing to do for fun in San Antonio?
San Antonio holds so many special memories for me. Growing up, we frequented Luby’s off Bitters and 281 (best mac and cheese ever!) and attended plays at the Majestic Theatre—a tradition I now continue with my family. We love visiting local favorites like Rosario’s and Alamo Café. Outside the city, our family enjoys skiing (though my kids now outpace me on the slopes!) and trips to the beach where we can unwind and spend quality time together.
6. What leadership lessons have you learned along the way?
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that it's okay to not have all the answers. Vulnerability and transparency as a leader build trust and strengthen the team. Leading is a privilege—I get to work with incredibly talented people who could work anywhere but choose to be here. That’s not something I take for granted. When you care for your team, they, in turn, take great care of your clients.
Shape Your Destiny:
Turning Today’s Decisions into Tomorrow’s Success
By Melinda Adams, Financial Advisor, CEPA
Have you ever paused to imagine your life 10, 20, or even 30 years from now? What kind of life will you be living? The choices you make today are shaping your future self—so why not start aligning those choices with the person you want to become?
Emma and her husband, Bill, faced this very question. In their late 40s, with children in college, they had built a successful life. Yet, they felt stuck—living reactively instead of intentionally. They craved more than financial security; they wanted financial freedom. I introduced them to holistic financial planning and the book Be Your Future Self Now by Dr. Benjamin Hardy. That’s when everything changed.
Who Is Your Future Self?
Dr. Hardy’s concept is simple yet life-changing: envision your future self and let that vision guide your decisions. Imagine your ideal life 15 years from now. Where do you live? What are you doing? Who are you spending your time with?
For Emma and Bill, the picture became clear. They saw themselves living in a vacation home, surrounded by family, with the freedom to travel without hesitation. Once they embraced this vision, they realized it wasn’t just a dream—it was a roadmap.
Now, think about your future self. What would they tell you to start—or stop—doing today? Are your current financial decisions moving you closer to the life you envision, or further away?
Are You Aligning Your Choices with Your Vision?
With their vision in place, Emma and Bill shifted their mindset. Every financial decision was filtered through one question: Will this bring us closer to the life we want? For their situation and goals, they chose to maximize their tax savings, diversify their investments, and helped secure their future with life insurance and retirement strategies.
What about you? Are you making decisions today that your future self will thank you for?
Can You Balance Today’s Joy with Tomorrow’s Dreams?
Emma and Bill didn’t want to put their life on hold for the future. They wanted to enjoy the present without compromising tomorrow. Together, we worked on balancing these priorities.
I worked with them to create an investment strategy based on their unique situation while they also chose to cut back on impulsive spending.
This required intentionality—and sometimes sacrifices—but it also meant they could enjoy today while staying on track for their future.
What about your life? Are you finding the balance between living well now and building for the future you desire?
Are You Ready to Step into the Life You’ve Always Dreamed Of?
As Emma and Bill took deliberate steps, their financial landscape transformed. Their savings grew and their future came into focus. They were no longer just dreaming of financial freedom—they were living it.
Now, it’s your turn. Close your eyes and picture your life in 15 years. What does it look like? More importantly, what actions can you take today to make that vision your reality?
The life you’ve always dreamed may be within your reach, but to work toward it, action is required. Are you ready to take that first step?
Your Future Self Is Waiting—Will You Answer the Call?
Your future self is out there, urging you to act. Will you take the steps to help you live the life you deserve? By making intentional decisions, aligning your financial strategies with your goals, and balancing present enjoyment with future security, you can work toward shaping a destiny filled with purpose and abundance.
What will you choose today to help you wake up tomorrow as the person you’ve always wanted to be?

Ashley Sacriste of Laurel Ridge Treatment Center is Committed to its
Mission of "Saving Lives, Healing Families, and Creating Hope"
Since taking the helm as CEO of Laurel Ridge Treatment Center in June 2024, Ashley Sacriste has wasted no time in fulfilling one of her key responsibilities, which is to engage with the San Antonio community to raise awareness about mental health – and let them know that Laurel Ridge is here to help.
"I have a mission and a servant's heart to reach the San Antonio market as a whole," Sacriste said. "Even though Laurel Ridge has been here for 40 years, there is still a large population that doesn't know about the services we provide. We want to let the community know there are services for a variety of mental health needs one might experience."
With more than 20 years of experience in the behavioral health industry and a doctorate degree in healthcare administration from Oklahoma State University, Sacriste is well-equipped with the knowledge and capability to carry out the center's mission of "Saving Lives, Healing Families, and Creating Hope" along with the staff and providers at Laurel Ridge.
"Our mission encompasses a variety of opportunities," Sacriste explained. "For instance, how do you accomplish those three aspects and bring that message to people in San Antonio? There's help and options behind every situation that may arise, and when you have someone supporting you, it goes a long way in helping you overcome your challenges."
The CEO and her staff have been creative in their outreach efforts and outside-the-box thinking to educate people about mental health issues and the stigma surrounding it. Recently, Sacriste met with members from the boxing community to do just that. "We have a large boxing community, and we went to several boxing gyms to bring mental health awareness to the sports industry," she said. "In any physical activity, it all starts with a strong mental perspective, so we developed the slogan, 'The Fight Starts From Within.' "
The campaign's success has led Laurel Ridge to partner with the North East Independent School District as the lead sponsor for its North East Educational Foundation to take that message to the schools. "We're helping bring awareness to students, but also to teachers, administrators and counselors throughout the district," Sacriste said.
Chief Operating Officer Deborah Toscano, LCSW, said that as a female leader in mental health, one has the power to change lives—not just by what you do, but by how you lead. "Compassion, strength, and resilience are not just qualities; they are the foundation of the future we are building," Toscano said. "Leading in an inpatient psychiatric facility requires more than expertise—it demands heart, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to healing. True leadership is about creating safety, inspiring hope, and guiding both patients and staff toward transformation. Laurel Ridge leadership is dedicated to instilling trust and accountability not only to our staff but in the community that trusts us to serve them in their time of need."
Since opening its doors in 1987 on a 29-acre campus, Laurel Ridge has evolved immensely to offer a broad range of mental health and substance abuse recovery services tailored to meet individuals in need of help, Sacriste notes.
"Laurel Ridge has expanded its treatment services to make sure we can meet every need," she said. "We've expanded our second campus to serve our military and active service members, and we are now partners with the City of San Antonio and Bexar County to serve our first responders, including the San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department. We've also seen an 80 percent growth of veterans seeking behavioral and out-patient services."
Jeanette Quiroga, MD, Medical Director, Department of ECT and Neurostimulation, said Laurel Ridge leads the way in mental health treatment, using advanced technology to enhance their patients'
recovery and restore well-being. "As one of the largest providers of ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) in the state, our Neurostimulation Department is home to highly experienced physicians, nurses, and staff, delivering compassionate, expert care with an unwavering commitment to patient well-being," Quiroga said.
Mary R. Unzueta-Hernandez, MD, Medical Director, Mission Resiliency Program, believes Laurel Ridge offers the most comprehensive psychiatric care in the area, with programs tailored to fit the needs of people with substance use disorders, trauma, and mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, as well as other psychiatric illnesses. "We serve a wide variety of populations, including active duty service members, first responders, and veterans," she said.
Deborah Toscano, LCSW
Chief Operating Officer
Melody Muñoz, PsyD, LPC, LMFT Director of Business Development
Meanwhile, Sacriste's passion for improving lives and advocating for mental health makes her a respected voice among industry peers and an asset to the community. "When you're able to stand side by side with someone and help them recover, it's a beautiful thing, knowing you can impact a person's life," she said. "That's what has kept me in the behavioral health industry for so long."
Sacriste encourages anyone seeking services to call Laurel Ridge, which offers 24/7 free assessments, at (210) 491-3591 to get connected to a live person and guidance on treatment options. For more information, visit www.laurelridgetc.com.

IVF 101
By Dr. Courtney Failor
Starting a family is an exciting journey, but for the one in six couples facing infertility, it can be a challenging, overwhelming experience. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), provide hope and help to individuals and couples who are struggling to conceive.
IVF is the most effective form of assisted reproduction and one of the most widely used fertility treatments today, with over 8 million babies born in the U.S. through IVF. Since its introduction more than 40 years ago, the technologies used in IVF have evolved. Innovations like preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) are improving success rates.
Although infertility can be caused by a number of different factors and include female infertility, male factor infertility, or unexplained infertility, IVF can be very successful. It’s important to incorporate personalized recommendations for care from a fertility specialist in order to maximize your chances of success.
The IVF Process
IVF might sound complicated, but it’s actually done through a few simple steps. First, hormones are injected to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The eggs are retrieved via a minor surgical procedure while the patient is under light sedation, and the sperm sample is collected. Next, the egg and sperm are combined in a lab and monitored as they divide. Finally, the embryos are inserted into the uterus. If PGT-A is being performed, embryos are biopsied at the blastocyst stage, frozen, and transferred in another cycle.
Who Can Benefit from IVF?
IVF is a valuable option for both single individuals and couples facing various fertility challenges, including blocked or absent fallopian tubes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, male-factor infertility, unexplained fertility, and age-related fertility decline.
For LGBTQIA+ couples, IVF can open the doors to parenthood through the use of donor sperm, donor eggs, gestational carrier, and reciprocal IVF. Here, both female partners can participate in the process with one person providing the egg and the other carrying the pregnancy.
Why Are Multiple Embryos Created?
A common misunderstanding about IVF is why additional embryos are created. The reason for this lies in the odds of success.
Studies show that a single chromosomally normal embryo has about a 65% chance of resulting in a live birth. However, not all fertilized eggs develop into viable embryos—on average, nearly half do not reach the blastocyst stage.
As we age, the likelihood of an embryo being chromosomally normal decreases. Women under 35 can expect that about 5065% of their blastocysts will be euploid, but this percentage drops to around 25% for women aged 40-42 and 10% or lower for those over 43. Even if everything goes perfectly, a woman who has 20 eggs at the time of retrieval could conceivably end up with only a few embryos for transfer.
Does IVF Lead to Multiple Pregnancies?
In the early days of IVF, transferring multiple embryos was common to improve the chances of pregnancy. However, advancements such as PGT-A have significantly increased the success rate of single embryo transfers, reducing the risk of multiples and making IVF safer for mother and baby.
In contrast, intrauterine insemination (IUI) often involves ovulation-inducing medications that can lead to the fertilization of multiple eggs, making IVF a more controlled option focused on embryo quality rather than quantity.
The Importance of Fertility Education
Understanding the IVF process is key to making informed decisions about your fertility journey. With knowledge comes empowerment, allowing individuals and couples to navigate their options confidently and choose the best path for their family.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Learn about colorectal cancer and when to start screenings
By Gloria Madera, CHRISTUS Health
CHRISTUS Health recognizes March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month by providing crucial information about the second-deadliest cancer in the U.S., which can be detected with screenings.
"Colorectal cancer is located in the colon or rectum," said Dr. German Almonte, general surgeon with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. "It can start as a noncancerous tumor, or polyp, but it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of the cancer."
He said those symptoms could include changes in bowel movements, such as diarrhea or constipation; the consistency, color, and even shape of the stool; and abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating. He said you should seek medical attention and speak with your primary care physician if symptoms last for one to two weeks. But, if you experience bleeding in the rectum area, then an expedited evaluation is recommended.
"A colonoscopy is needed to evaluate for colorectal cancer," Almonte said. "During the procedure, we inspect the lining of the colon and rectum, and the sooner a polyp is found, the better."
A patient is sedated during a colonoscopy. A colonoscope, which is a small, lighted camera attached to the end of a long, thin, flexible tube with multiple channels, is inserted through the anus and advanced through the colon to the end. The colonoscope pumps air into the colon to inflate it, and the camera transmits video so the physician can see the inside of the colon on a monitor.
"Treatment will depend on the stage of colorectal cancer when it's found," Almonte said. "If it's isolated in the colon, then surgery is our first option. If it's advanced and has traveled to the lymph nodes, on occasion, chemotherapy and/or radiation is used to shrink the tumor before it's surgically removed."
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force now recommends adults start getting screened for colorectal cancer at age 45, five years earlier than the previous guidelines. The change in 2021 was based on the trend of growing cases among younger adults.
Experts aren't sure why there's an increase in younger adults getting colon cancer but point to poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise, tobacco and alcohol use, as well as environmental impacts such as exposure to chemicals as possible factors. Family history also plays a role.
"Early detection increases the chance of a cure," Almonte said. "That is why it's important to highlight National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so people can learn what it is and when screenings should start."
Noninvasive at-home colon cancer screening tests are available for adults 45 and older at average risk.

ORAL CANCER
Early Detection and Prevention
By Dirk P. DeKoch, DDS, Alamo Heights Dental
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that begins inside the mouth. Approximately 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, and about 10,000 will die from oral cancer this year. As with all cancers, early diagnosis is critically important, so it is important for you and your loved ones to know the early warning signs and ways to prevent it from occurring in the first place!
Where Does It Occur?
Oral cancer can occur anywhere inside the mouth, including:
• the lips
• inner linings of the lips and cheeks
• gums
• tongue
• roof and floor of the mouth
• tonsils
• throat
What are the Risk Factors?
The most common risk factors include:
• Tobacco in ALL forms
• Excessive and frequent drinking -- Drinkers are five times as likely as non-drinkers to develop oral cancer, even more so if combined with tobacco use
• Exposure to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) -- A specific type of HPV is responsible for 2/3 of cancers in the back of the tongue, throat, and tonsils. Oral cancer is increasingly more common in young people, especially those who have had multiple sex partners
• Excessive sun exposure, especially at a young age
• Gender – Men are twice as likely as women to have oral, head and neck cancers
• Family history of cancer
• Age – Oral cancer is usually found after age 55 but is becoming increasingly more common in young people with HPV
• Chronic physical trauma, such as sharp teeth or chronic biting habits
• Weakened immune system
• Poor diet and hygiene
What are the Symptoms?
One of the challenging aspects of noticing the early symptoms of oral cancer is that they present as common occurrences that are not typically a concern. The difference is that with cancer, the symptoms last more than a couple of weeks. Be concerned if any of these common early warning signs persist for over a month:
• Mouth and lip sores that don't heal
• Numbness, pain, or tenderness on the face, neck, or mouth that occurs without apparent cause
• Tender, swollen lymph nodes below your lower jaw or neck are a common sign
• Rough or crusty spots on the lips, gums, or inside the mouth
• Red, white, or speckled red/white patches in the mouth or throat
• Chronic sore throat, often with an unproductive cough
• Trouble swallowing or breathing - this presents as if something is caught in the back of the throat
• Raspy voice
• Jaw or ear pain
• Chronic bad breath
• Change in the way your teeth fit together
• Unintentional weight loss
How Do We Prevent Oral Cancer?
• Don't use tobacco
• Limit alcohol intake to two or less drinks per day

Tips To Improve Your Dining Experience
It’s no secret that restaurants are loud! The noise level of most restaurants makes for a less-than-enjoyable experience, especially for people with hearing loss. A study conducted in 2023 revealed that 63% of restaurants had an average noise level of 75 dB, which is about 15 dB louder than the normal conversation level. All of this is to say that you are not alone if you have trouble understanding your family and friends when dining out. Consider implementing the following tips to improve your dining experience.
1. Do your research. Information regarding San Antonio restaurant noise levels is not readily available. However, there are some things you might notice in pictures found on Google or Yelp that can provide you with helpful insight. Carpet is one of the most effective tools for reducing reverberation. As such, a carpeted restaurant will be significantly quieter than one with tile flooring. Multiple plants and widely spaced tables are also a good sign that noise levels will be more controlled. Studies indicate that Chinese, Indian, and Japanese restaurants are the most likely to be quiet.
2. Choose the right table. Opt for a booth or table in a corner by a wall to minimize background noise. The kitchen is the loudest part of the restaurant, so try to sit as far away from it as possible. When available, choose to sit at a round table. Round tables allow you to see everyone's face easily, which can improve your conversation experience.
3. Advocate for yourself. Don’t be embarrassed to tell the restaurant staff about your hearing needs. Your experience is important to them; they know the restaurant better than you do. Assuming there is a quieter restaurant area, they will gladly sit you there.
4. Communicate assertively. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace, ensuring your words are easy to understand. Avoid chewing gum while speaking to make lip reading easier. In a larger group, make a point to get the individual's attention before you begin speaking to ensure they are fully engaged. The easiest way to do this is to say their name, wait for acknowledgment, and then move forward with your conversation.
5. Wear your hearing aids! Hearing aids have the technology to reduce background noise. If you continue to experience consistent difficulty when wearing your hearing aids, tell your audiologist. They can likely adjust the amplification settings to manage background noise better.
One of the most detrimental side effects of untreated hearing loss is social isolation. I hope these tips help you and your loved ones stay connected. If you find yourself worried about your next social gathering, call an audiologist you trust. We have tools to help!
My personal recommendation is El Dorado Mexican Restaurant at 14602 Huebner. The birria tacos and margaritas are delicious, the ambiance is refined, and the sound level is ideal.
Unlock the Power of Your Gut
The Key to Improved Wellness
By Chelcee Porter, PharmD, IFMCP
One of the most powerful ways to improve your overall health and wellbeing is to focus on your gut health. There is a reason why gut health is such a popular topic in the health and wellness space. Your gut plays a role in almost every single aspect of your health. Your gut is influencing how you think, feel, and respond to different things. Let’s dive into how your gut could be the key to finding wellness!
You can’t talk about gut health without understanding what it does in the first place. Your gut is the powerhouse behind digestion and nutrient absorption. It is in charge of breaking down the food you eat so that the nutrients can be absorbed. If your body can’t break down and absorb nutrients, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies. This can cause symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or hormone dysfunction.
Problems digesting can lead to an imbalance in your microbiome, the good and bad bacteria in your gut. The microbiome even helps break down our food to be able to absorb nutrients that our gut wouldn’t be able to on
its own. It affects so many other processes in the body that when there are changes in the microbiome you start having symptoms. It's easy to think of symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, and constipation but symptoms outside of the gut can happen too! Like I always say, “When your microbiome is thriving, you are thriving!”
Your gut is a first line of defense when it comes to protecting your body. Imagine your gut like a fence. We don’t want toxins, bacteria, or anything that could cause harm to get absorbed into the blood stream. Your gut acts as a fence to keep the bad guys out but lets the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients be absorbed.
When our gut health is struggling, we usually see what is called a “leaky gut”. This is like if our gut fence had pieces missing, allowing things that we wouldn’t normally absorb to be absorbed. When the bad guys get into the blood stream it can lead to a response from the immune system and inflammation.
Speaking of the immune system, 70% of your immune system is actually found in the gut. A strong gut supports a strong immune system. This is why it is important to take a look at gut health if you are dealing with symptoms like joint pain, skin problems, frequent infections or autoimmune conditions.
This is just a slight glimpse into the power your gut has when it comes to your overall health!

Brain Science and Female Hormones
How They Shape Mood, Cognition, and Well-Being
By Sunita Punjabi, PhD
Hormones are mighty chemical messengers that influence nearly every system in the body, including the brain. In women, fluctuating hormone levels—particularly estrogen and progesterone—play a critical role in cognitive function, mood regulation, and overall mental well-being. Understanding the relationship between female hormones and brain function offers valuable insights into emotional resilience and neurological health.
The Role of Estrogen in Brain Function
Estrogen is one of the most influential hormones affecting the female brain. Beyond its role in reproductive health, estrogen has profound effects on: Neuroprotection: Estrogen acts as a protective agent in the brain, helping to prevent neurodegeneration by reducing oxidative stress and promoting the survival of neurons. This is why estrogen decline during menopause has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Neurotransmitter Regulation: Estrogen enhances the production and activity of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, influencing mood, motivation, and cognitive flexibility. This is one reason why women may experience mood swings during menstrual cycles or menopause. Memory and Cognition: Research suggests that estrogen improves verbal memory, learning, and overall cognitive function by increasing synaptic connections in the hippocampus, a brain region associated with memory formation.
Progesterone: The Calming Hormone
While estrogen gets much attention, progesterone plays an equally crucial role in female brain function. Often referred to as the "calming hormone," progesterone is known for its: GABA
Modulation: Progesterone interacts with gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. This is why progesterone levels affect sleep quality and emotional stability. Neuroinflammation Control: Some studies suggest that progesterone helps regulate neuroinflammation, which may have implications for preventing neurodegenerative diseases. Emotional Balance: Low progesterone levels have been associated with increased anxiety, irritability, and mood disturbances, particularly in premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and perimenopause.
Neurofeedback for addressing hormone balance and brain optimization
In 2018, I was told that my brain was atrophying. I remembered a graduate course I had taken at UTSA that dealt with the science of neuroplasticity and the treatment called neurofeedback. This means that I learned the brain was plastic, and all I had to do was exercise it to grow it back. I realized that neurofeedback can be a powerful tool for balancing my hormones by optimizing my brain function and regulating the autonomic nervous system. Here are some key benefits of neurofeedback for women's hormonal health:
1.
Regulating
the
HPA Axis (HypothalamicPituitary-Adrenal) The HPA axis plays a central role in stress response and hormone regulation. Chronic stress can lead to cortisol imbalances, negatively affecting estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones. Neurofeedback helps calm the nervous system, reducing chronic stress and cortisol dysregulation allowing the body to restore hormonal balance naturally.
2. Reducing PMS and Menstrual Irregularities
Many women experience mood swings, fatigue, and pain due to fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels. Neurofeedback promotes better autonomic nervous system regulation, improving emotional stability, pain perception, and menstrual cycle regularity.
3. Enhancing Sleep and Melatonin Production
Sleep disturbances are common in women with hormonal imbalances, often due to low progesterone, high cortisol, or disrupted melatonin cycles. Neurofeedback improves sleep by training the brain to enter relaxation, leading to better melatonin production and deep sleep cycles.
4. Supporting Thyroid Function
The thyroid plays a crucial role in metabolism, energy, and mood. Stress and brain dysregulation can contribute to hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s disease. Neurofeedback helps balance brainwave activity, which can positively influence the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, improving thyroid function.
5. Managing Perimenopause and Menopause Symptoms
Women in perimenopause and menopause often experience hot flashes, anxiety, brain fog, and mood instability due to declining estrogen and progesterone. Neurofeedback can help stabilize brain chemistry and neurotransmitter function, reducing symptoms and improving cognitive clarity.
6. Improving Mood and Emotional Regulation
Hormonal fluctuations can lead to anxiety, depression, and irritability. By optimizing brainwave patterns, neurofeedback supports emotional regulation, enhances serotonin and dopamine levels, and promotes a sense of wellbeing.
7. Reducing Insulin Resistance and Supporting Metabolism
Hormonal imbalances, particularly PCOS and estrogen dominance, are linked to insulin resistance. Neurofeedback enhances autonomic nervous system function, reducing stress-related insulin resistance and promoting metabolic stability.
8. Supporting Fertility and Reproductive Health
Stress and brain dysregulation can interfere with ovulation, hormone production, and reproductive health. Neurofeedback helps regulate the brain’s communication with the reproductive system, optimizing fertility.
Last Thoughts:
The more we know about the relationship between the brain and the body the more we can address the causation of our pain. With the growing demands on women, it is tempting to just “pop a pill” for our headaches. Remember, our body doesn’t crave Tylenol. Before you put the pill in your mouth, question the “why” of your pain. Pain is a gift from God, telling your brain that something is not right with your body.
CDMX, Mi Corazón
A Solo Female Traveler’s Guide to Mexico City
By Taylor Lane
As the bird flies, Mexico City appears to be so far out of reach. Yet, for San Antonians, we can be in the heart of the city within two hours on a direct flight! As a solo-female traveler, touching down in CDMX (Ciudad de México) for the first time felt quite daunting, despite my experience traveling abroad alone. With a phone running on empty and international cell service that hadn’t kicked in yet, I found a taxi and said a quick prayer as I embarked on what would become the trip to discover the city that stole my heart.
Knowing the majority of my time would be spent flying solo following the wedding of my friends Katelyn and Christian, I was extra diligent with my pre-trip planning. The first item on my list was finding the perfect place to stay. Somewhere safe, in an area with walkable attractions, accommodations within the hotel for unwinding after dark, and, of course, aesthetically elevated.
Lodging Fit For a Queen
What I found was something truly spectacular that checked all my boxes, and more! Hotel Dama is nestled in beautiful (and safe) Condesa. Although it’s rather easy to miss from the unassuming exterior design, what awaits
inside is anything but! With a front door that can only be opened via room key or the front desk attendant, I knew immediately that this would be safe, at the very least. I was greeted by the friendliest staff and a quaint lobby reminiscent of a sunken living room lounge, complete with incredible artwork and tequila tasting. Warm colors and textures, modern furniture, and a touch of green to bring the life of Mexico City inside, I was inspired to completely update my personal living space once I returned home. I was shown to my room, which did not disappoint. Large checkered tiles extended to the floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass door, opening to an intimate patio overlooking a vine-covered white & rust courtyard below. The most comfortable and luxurious bedding and a light and clean bathroom featuring a huge walk-in shower with a window that opened to the outside.
Promenade
As tempting as it was to cozy up at Dama for the rest of the day, I was determined to explore. First up was Amsterdam Avenue - with an Uber set for Qūentin Café. After enjoying people-watching with a matcha latte at a bistro table along the tree-lined street, I set out on a stroll. This 1.2-mile loop encircling Parque México was a gem full of cafes, unique shops, and bars. Next up, as a thrifting enthusiast, I ventured to a nearby part of town to visit Erre Vintage. From there, I couldn’t pass the surrounding shops without going inside! The record stores, art galleries, clothiers, and eateries here could have been a destination all on their own.
Coincidentally, my visit fell on Mexican Independence Day, and the breathtaking spectacle of the celebration extended for miles around Palacio Nacional. As the streets leading to Palacio Nacional opened to the massive square, I found the most spectacular display of lights adorning every building face with past presidents and national insignia. The heart of the central plaza was pulsing with energy, and people were singing along to music from the stage.
While I was fortunate enough to experience the magic of El Grito de Dolores in El Zócalo, many places I wanted to visit were closed for the holiday. Marking the Frida Kahlo museum, Xochimilco boats, and Bosque de Chapultepec on my list for “next time,” I found Museo Soumaya open to the public (and free)! Museums are a fantastic way to spend time in a new city when traveling sin amigas. The building alone was a magnificent sight, but winding through the inside, I enjoyed breathtaking paintings and fellow art enthusiasts, culminating at the top floor filled with sculptures illuminated by sunlight spilling through the overhead skylights.
A Girl’s Gotta Eat!
In my personal opinion, the best pairing for a meal is great ambience and al fresco seating. Seeking just that, I discovered Toledo Rooftop, a lounge-style bar and eatery perfect for enjoying the sunshine or watching a storm roll in under the covered section of the rooftop. In the mornings, I lavished at Dama’s own lounge-style rooftop, complete with freshly squeezed juices, sliced fruit, overnight oats, and chilaquiles verdes (one of my all-time favorite dishes). A short walk from the hotel, I found Lardo to satisfy my craving for a good espresso and sparkling water. The walk was quiet and peaceful, but as I neared my destination, the corner was bustling with some of the best-dressed patrons I’ve ever seen, who were all there to experience Lardo’s open-air brunch, as well. I am positive the list of great dining options in CDMX is endless, but consider these my contributions! Along with Maque Cafe for their spicy aguachiles, Panaderia Rosetta, and the live vinyl spinning experiences offered at Orbita and Coppola Pizza Bar.
Whether you find yourself in the city for a quick trip or an extended stay, you might fall in love and be tempted to remain indefinitely, like myself. Salud!
