- IN THE LOOP FLY FISHING IN 78209. REALLY?

It may come as a surprise to some, but fly fishing is a very popular sport. And now, thanks to Brandon Simmons and Albert Shannon, South Texans can get all the fly fishing gear and instruction they want.

The two long-time friends joined forces to open Alamo Anglers on Broadway St. adjacent to The Hayden, the Jewish-style diner, and near the Witte Museum.

Citing Census Bureau statistics, Simmons told me, “Two percent of the population are fly fishers, so there should be 27,000 people in San Antonio who fly fish.” And he added, “There is a vibrant fly fishing community in Alamo Heights.”

He said he started fly fishing when he was just 6-years old.

He was born in east Texas and grew up in Mississippi and Georgia. He returned to Texas as a birding guide at the Valero property in Sisterdale.

On its website, Alamo Anglers writes, “South Texas’ premier fly shop. Come hang out, swap a fish story or two, and get the gear you need whether you are a seasoned fly veteran or a complete beginner.”

Simmons and Shannon told me, “We will do fly fishing classes. We’re happy to show anyone what and how to fly fish. We carry beginner combo kits. You can walk out our back door and catch a fish in the San Antonio River, And that’s where we can teach fly fishing.”

By Ron Aaron Eisenberg In the past few years, the stretch of Broadway St. from Loop 410 south to E. Lawndale has been reinventing itself with new businesses and restaurants such as La Panadería, Dutch Brothers Coffee, and Thai Curry Restaurant.

Now, a little over a half-acre is available at 8210 Broadway St, previously the home of Boss Auto. The property is assessed at over $950,000 by Bexar County Tax Assessor. Thai Curry sits in a corner of the site.

Boss Automotive moved in March 2023 to 3400 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78217. The Broadway St. property is owned by the Sledge family in Boerne, Texas. They told me they are open to leasing the site again or selling it. As of this writing, there’s no word on the disposition of the land.

70-YEAR-OLD CLOCK FINDS NEW HOME IN ‘09

By Ron Aaron Eisenberg There’s a wonderful new addition to the front of The Jewelry Store at 5603 Broadway St. in 78209. It’s a 70-year-old clock that store owner Oscar Villarreal restored.

He told me he found the clock on the south side of San Antonio.

Working in his garage workshop at home, Villarreal said he spent weeks updating the clock and getting it to function again.

He had to rebuild the entire mechanism. It’s gorgeous. And it is especially striking at night.

The Jewelry Store is located in the heart of Alamo Heights. Its website notes it is a full-service repair and custom fabrication shop specializing in fine jewelry. From one-of-a-kind estate jewelry to popular lines, such as Kurtulan, Bassali, Jolie, and many more. Additionally, they offer a variety of jewelry-related services: custom designs in all precious metals, estate jewelry restoration and repair, watch services, stone replacement, inhouse engraving, and appraisals.

SIDEWALK NEAR ALAMO HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL UPGR ADED

By Ron Aaron Eisenberg Students walking to and from The Alamo Heights High School along Broadway St. are having an easier time now that new and upgraded sidewalks are in place.

The H-E-B Foundation recently completed construction of its new San Antonio home at 140 W. Sunset, in 78209.

The one-story, 10,000 sq. ft. building reportedly cost $8.5 million to build. It sits on a little over 1.5 acres. The Bexar County Tax Assessor values the property at nearly $5.5 million. The site was home to the Horse of a Different Color antique market.

Some nine buildings sat on the property, which was nearly demolished by the time the foundation acquired it in August 2017.

The foundation was previously headquartered in Kerrville, where H-E-B grocery began. It maintains that office, too. Among other things, The foundation offers camps and retreats in the Hill Country. Recently, in San Antonio, it has targeted programming for children and families, as well as training for other nonprofits. The foundation had been renting space near Alamo Heights to build the new offices.

On its website, The Foundation writes that it maintains six campgrounds and retreat centers at its 1,900-acre ranch outside of Leakey, Texas: Echo Valley, Singing Hills, Laity Lodge, Linnet’s Wings, Windsong, and Headwaters. The Foundation welcomes opportunities to work with local nonprofit organizations.

The work from Claywell Dr. to Castano Ave. was long overdue. Until the project was completed, many students and other pedestrians were forced to walk in the street. But that was particularly perilous due to heavy traffic on Broadway and water puddling in the street when it rained. As area residents know, it doesn’t take much rain to cause water to gather on that road.

Interestingly, Broadway belongs to the City of San Antonio, but the walkways adjacent to the road are governed by the City of Alamo Heights.

Sidewalks pose unique challenges to municipalities.

It turns out not every homeowner wants a sidewalk in front of their residence. Despite the city having right-of-way jurisdiction over the land adjacent to the street, some homeowners have landscaped those areas. Others want to avoid the responsibility of maintaining the sidewalks.

Now, at least for one stretch of land, sidewalks are upgraded and in place.

Belles & Beaux Belles & Beaux attracts customers nationwide with a charming collection of premium children’s clothing and accessories

Whether it’s a special occasion or everyday attire, many of the best-dressed kids shop at Belles & Beaux. Located at Sunset Ridge shopping center since 2011, the boutique specializes in a distinctive collection of upscale children’s items. The store’s specialty is girls’ and boys’ clothing, with sizes from newborn to 14. It also sells shoes, accessories, and toys. Here, it’s ok for kids to touch.

The store is tightly filled. To make room for strollers and more items, Belles & Beaux is expanding. Work is scheduled for early 2024 to basically double their store space.

“We needed to grow but didn’t want to leave Sunset Ridge. I feel this type of old-school, walkable shopping center is right for us. We’re excited to get the space next door,” said Christen Wommack, Belles & Beaux owner. “In addition to spreading things out, we’ll also add a line of boy’s athletic wear and have additional room for displays.”

Upscale children’s boutiques aren’t common in clothing retail.

It wasn’t Christen’s intention to get into this line of business.

Christen learned that the original Belles & Beaux owner was interested in selling through some friends.

But, If the kids need me or there’s something at school, I can leave, so it’s very flexible.”

Belles & Beaux’s focus on premium brand children’s clothing makes the store a favorite with customers around the country.

The store grew its base from local, mostly 78209 clientele. Social media and online shopping helped the store reach new shoppers.

Word spread through the internet, and soon, the store was selling items throughout Texas and beyond.

“We ship coast to coast from Hawaii to New York and many other states. Once they buy from us, many become repeat buyers,” Christen said.

This nationwide customer base helps Belles and Beaux generate sales throughout the year. Spring and Fall are the busiest periods.

Baby shower registration helps the store stay steady in the traditional slow retail months of summer.

Belles and Beaux’s distinct selection of toys is a growing part of their business. Christen seeks out items not normally found at department stores that inspire the imagination.

“It was kind of the perfect opportunity at the perfectly wrong timing,” Christen recalled.

“We want unique kind of whimsical or special toys. One of my biggest surprises was the singing animals. We sold several of them and never thought that toy would be such a hit.”

She was conflicted about operating a retail business as the mother of three young kids, with plans to have another child. After discussing with her husband, George, Christen took a leap of faith and purchased the business.

Surrounded by toys, cute clothes, and adorable kids, there’s a noticeable positive energy in Belles & Beaux. You sense the excitement and see the smiles from children and adults when they walk through the door.

“My husband was really encouraging and reminded me opportunities like this don’t happen often, and I should do it,” Christen added. “So, we did, and it’s the best thing ever. I’ve loved every minute.”

“It’s definitely a happy, joyful place. The children are so cute, funny, and very honest if they don’t like something,” Christen laughed.

Christen employs nine part-time employees. Many have been with the store longer than she’s owned it. The experienced staff makes it possible for Christen to balance life as a mom and an entrepreneur.

“I’m very happy being a business owner and being a mom,” Christen added. “I love to go into the store and have that outlet.

Christen says she’s been approached about opening more locations in San Antonio and other cities. She feels Belles & Beaux is in the ideal location at Sunset Ridge. And, with the store expansion happening soon, there’s plenty to keep her in the moment.

“I’m going to focus on doing what I can do well and still have enough time to be a mom and be part of my kid’s life,” Christen said. .

The Stedmans Family of four gets a kick out of living in 78209

Matt and Michelle Stedman and their children, Miles and Maeve, are well known in 78209’s soccer community. Their children have been playing on soccer teams since they were old enough to join a team. Miles plays on the Alamo Heights Junior School eighth-grade boys’ team. Maeve is a sixth grader and looking forward to trying out for the girls’ team in seventh grade.

Miles and Maeve each play on Classic Elite Club soccer teams.

With two working parents, it can be hectic getting the kids to weekly practices and games. The Stedmans rely on the help and friendships they’ve formed with other 78209 parents involved with the same club soccer team.

“They’re really our other family,” Michelle said. “They help take our kids to practice, pick up, drop off. When we can’t make a game, they send us pictures. We love those people.”

The Stedmans moved to 78209 in 2006, first in Terrell Hills and then to the Northridge area. Matt is an administrative executive for UT Health Science Center San Antonio for the Department of OB-GYN and the Primary Care Center. Matt was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare after supporting his mother through early-onset Alzheimer’s. She was diagnosed at age 52 and passed away at 59 years old.

“As part of my mom’s healthcare journey, I saw the best and the worst of healthcare. I wanted to try to make a difference, which is why I got into healthcare,” Matt said. “I earned my master’s from Trinity University, which has a fantastic health care administration program. I worked for two hospital systems before joining UT Health more than five years ago.”

Michelle is a 20-year career architect and operates a woman, minority-owned firm called Studio Plearn located just north of Downtown.

“We mainly focus on civic and institutional work with occasional residential assignments for clients.”

Prior to starting Studio Plearn, Michelle worked for a large San Antonio firm where she was able to make a unique contribution to the city of Alamo Heights.

“I worked on the design of the new Alamo Heights City Hall,”

said Michelle. “I would drop my kids off at daycare at the Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church and walk across the street to monitor the construction of the project.”

Matt and Michelle are strong supporters of public schools.

They attended the same high school in Killeen and were active in the band. When they moved to San Antonio, living in an area with a top-rated school system was an important priority.

“We grew up on public school education and value that as a local resource,” Michelle added. “We formed many relationships through our close-knit community and felt Alamo Heights I.S.D. schools would offer that same experience for our children.”

The Stedman children take advantage of the education, arts, and sports opportunities A.H.I.S.D. offers. Miles and Maeve got an early start with music, participating in the elementary strings program. Miles is a member of honors band playing the baritone, also known as the euphonium. Meanwhile, Maeve selected a surprising instrument to begin her band career.

“Maeve threw us a curveball by picking the bassoon,” said Matt. “We thought it would be the clarinet or French horn, but she chose perhaps one of the most unique instruments.”

The Stedmans place a strong emphasis on volunteerism.

Through the National Junior Honor Society, Miles gets opportunities to help at local nursing homes and other organized service activities. The Stedmans regularly help at the San Antonio Food Bank as a family.

“We feel it’s important for our children to understand the importance of giving back to the community,” Michelle said.

From schools, volunteerism, soccer pals, and more, 78209 offers everything the Stedmans want from a vibrant community.

The excellent nearby food options are a nice perk, too.

“We like to eat. A lot of great restaurant options here,” said Matt.

“Everything is so close by. It’s like a big, small town for us,” Michelle added. “It’s just really nice to be part of this community.”

- SCHOOL NEWS EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL COMING TO AHISD

Beginning in the fall of 2024, Alamo Heights High School will launch the Early College High School and P-TECH (Pathway in Technology Early College High School) at Alamo Heights.

An Early College High School (ECHS) provides students with up to 60 college credit hours free of charge and substantial support to guide them into an Associate of Arts degree. It is an opportunity for students to blend high school and college in a coherent, personalized, and rigorous education program provided in partnership with St. Philip’s College.

Students accepted into the program will begin taking college level courses as ninth graders.

Through the P-TECH program with a pathway in teaching, students will earn an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree and engage in valuable work-based learning experiences in order to earn an industry certification in teaching (paraprofessional) along with opportunities for paid internships.

College credits earned during high school are designed to be transferred to a four-year institution.

“These programs will provide a transformative educational experience where students seamlessly bridge high school and college and embark on a path to lifelong learning and success,” said Cory Smith, AHHS Principal.

Theft, Evading Arrest, Hit & Run Officers investigating the theft of building materials located the suspect vehicle and trailer in the 4900 blk. Broadway in a parking lot; as an officer approached, the truck suddenly accelerated striking the police vehicle and continued out of the parking lot and into the neighborhood where it could not be found; further investigation discovered the truck was reported stolen out of San Antonio.

11/24/2023 - 600 blk. Tuxedo Emergency Detention Officers investigating the reported strange behaviors of a female subject determined she was in mental crisis; the subject was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

11/25/2023 - 5200 blk. Broadway Motor Vehicle Theft, Recovered Stolen Vehicle A vehicle was reported stolen during overnight hours; a vehicle parked next to the stolen vehicle’s parking place was found to be reported stolen from San Antonio.

DWI / Accident A vehicle stopped for a red light was rearended by another vehicle that proceeded east on Primrose stopping in the front yard of a residence in the 200 block; investigation determined the driver of the striking vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and impaired.

Primrose DWI / Hit & Run Officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle found the vehicle badly damaged by an obvious crash; the driver of the vehicle attempted to evade officers but was captured near-by; the driver was uncooperative with officers who did locate any damage to vehicles or property near-by; during the course of the investigation it was determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol and impaired.

11/26/2023 - 100 blk. Canyon Theft / Shoplifting Female subject stole two cases of alcoholic beverages.

11/28/2023 - 500 blk. Austin Hwy Alcohol Violations Officers investigating a loud music complaint located ten minors playing football on the elementary school playground; further investigation determined several minors had consumed alcoholic beverages provided by one of the minors; several citations were issued and all called parents to pick them up.

12/01/2023 - 1000 blk. Townsend Wanted Person, Weapons Violation, Narcotics Violation Officer investigating a vehicle parked in the right-of-way discovered the driver was wanted out of Copperas Cove PD for narcotics violations and unlawfully carry a handgun during the commission of an offense; a pre-impoundment inventory of the vehicle discovered 12 gram of methamphetamine in various locations along with associated paraphernalia; multiple laptop computers, cell phones and SIMS card were seized for further investigation.
